Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAim: Previous research shows that the virtual environment poses challenges for the virtual leader and emphasizes the importance of leadership competencies to lead the virtual group. We see that there is a limited amount of research on project management in virtual project groups in relation to leadership competencies. The study therefore aims to increase the understanding of how project managers use their leadership competencies to handle the challenges that arise in virtual project teams. Method: The study adopts a qualitative research method, where semi-structured interviews have been conducted with project managers who have led or are leading virtual project groups. A thematic analysis has been applied where a connection has been made between significant themes in the results and previous research in the field. Result & Conclusions: The results show that virtual project managers experience challenges in the form of communication, group cohesion and digital tools. It also emerges from the results that the virtual project manager meets these challenges by being responsive, clear, and flexible, and adopts various solutions that can improve the work in the virtual environment. Contribution of the thesis: The study of virtual project management contributes to the business economics subject and leadership theory with increased knowledge of what the challenges for the virtual project manager can look like in relation to the virtual project manager's competencies. In the form of a practical contribution, the study can be useful for current or future project managers who wish to gain a deeper understanding of the subject. Suggestions for future research: For a deeper understanding of the subject, future research may examine whether different industries affect the experience of virtual project leadership, due to our limited selection. It would also have been interesting to look at whether the experience of the virtual environment differs in virtual project managers depending on experience.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe development of information technology during the recent decades has enabled a shift towards an increasingly global world. The market becomes international and the geographical distance is of less importance when a new partnership is to be established. As solutions for electronic communication becomes more widespread, accessible and cheap and the technology maturity in organizations and among its employees increase, not only the theoretical organizational image, but also the everyday life of many companies has started to be characterized by a new geographic spread. This study focuses on project teams operating in an environment where the physical meetings are few or non-existent. So-called virtual project teams. The study examines how a project manager for a virtual project works with team cohesiveness within his virtual project team. The study focuses on the practical tools and approaches that the project manager has and can use in the project to create team cohesiveness. The survey is conducted by qualitative interviews with eight project managers working with distributed teams in Sweden, representing various industries in both the public and private sectors. The material is analyzed based on seven themes identified in previous research and in responses. The result shows that the project leaders in the study all are working to strengthen the team cohesiveness. The project managers chose to focus on different aspects and tools in the process. Communication and clarity are common themes in the strategies that the project managers apply. Even though the projects are virtual the physical meeting is pointed out as important in shaping team cohesiveness. Well-functioning technical platforms that support synchronous communication are part of the foundation for the team cohesiveness in a virtual team.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThrough the technological progress of the recent decades, companies have had to adjust their operations and create new work methods. Working virtually is a growing phenomenon and today you can sit in different places and still work in the same project through digital solutions. This paper aims to create an understanding of how project managers in virtual teams work to assemble and motivate teams. Based on the purpose, we have developed two question formulations. These are the following: ”How do project managers work to strengthen motivation in virtual teams?” And “What advantages do project managers see in putting together virtual teams versus traditional ones?”In the chapter “Theoretical Framework” we will go through previous research and theories. Among other things, general research on virtual teams and theories about the composing of virtual teams will be descried as well as research about motivation in virtual teams. The study is based on a qualitative approach, where seven interviews with people who currently have, or have had, leading positions in virtual teams have been carried out The results of these interviews are reproduced with accompanying quotes in the chapter “Results and Analysis”. In this chapter we will also present the empirical data compared with the theoretical framework. The chapter “Conclusions” will answer the question formulations and conclusions drawn from them. A big advantage with composing virtual teams is the supply of competence available when employing people all over the country and sometimes all over the world. The study has also shown that there are several different ways to motivate employees. Finally, there is a discussion of the results and conclusions. Also, suggestions of future research will be given.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this study is to examine how project participants experience the transition to remote work that took place with the Covid-19 pandemic and whether they experience that it had an influence on the knowledge transfer within projects. Through a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 project participants, which were then thematically analyzed. The themes appeared were “A double-edged sword”, “Compass in the darkness” and “Kaleidoscope of the future”. The results show that remote work is greatly appreciated and that the motivation for knowledge transfer remained unchanged. The biggest challenges are that the social aspect disappears to some extent and it is more difficult to interpret body language and facial expressions. The conclusion is that regardless of digital tools, it is still the human beings who is at the center, and digital tools must be adapted to fit into their context and purpose so that the knowledge transfer can be maintained in remote work.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of the study has been to investigate project managers' experiences of communication in virtual projects in the IT industry. Data collection was conducted through qualitative semi-structured interviews with a total of nine project managers. The collected material has been analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that projects in the IT industry are largely virtual and that communication between the project members and also towards clients is largely virtual. This form of communication has both advantages and disadvantages, but in order to facilitate virtual communication, a physical first meeting is essential for an effective communication environment. A physical meeting has not only the benefit of the participants getting to know each other, and therefore makes it easier to communicate virtually, but it is also a good opportunity to ensure that all participants share a common goal and to create a sense of group belonging (socalled team building). While virtual meetings often have the advantage of being more efficient and consume less resources, they have the disadvantage of difficulties to read facial expressions and body language. The communication is often limited to text and speech. On the other hand, text and speech are the most important forms of communication, but with textual and oral language there is always a risk of misinterpretation. The study's main finding is that poor communication has its cause in misinterpretation of information. In order to counteract this, there are techniques to verify that the information has been obtained, which should be used to ensure effective communication.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this study was to examine whether, and if so how, project managers are affected by an imposed conversion to distributed project work during Covid-19. The study was conducted on the basis of a qualitative approach, with semi-structured interviews as the method for data collection. A total of ten project managers from ten different organizations were interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the collected data and the analysis resulted in three themes; Seize the day, No man is an island and The winds of change. The result of the study shows that the imposed distributed work is perceived to have a great impact. The shared experience is that the situation has a greater impact on a personal and social level than on the actual ability to deliver project results. Distributed work requires an increased amount of collaboration and increased digital presence to compensate for the absence of a shared workplace. The conclusion is that the benefits of the imposed distributed work are primarily the experience of flexibility and efficiency. The challenges with distributed work are increased demands for individual and situational leadership, the need for a clearer structure and more communication and a perceived lack of closeness to colleagues as well as the energy and commitment you share together. Der volle Inhalt der QuelleBackground: The current Covid-19 pandemic has led to increased distance work where project managers are faced with new challenges to ensure that knowledge sharing within project groups can be done effectively. Previous research has shown that social interaction is the most effective way to share knowledge, and that social exchange is an important factor in motivating project members to knowledge sharing. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate what effects the increased distance work has had on the sharing of knowledge within project groups when the social context changes.Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to examine the changes that project managers have made in order to ensure that knowledge is being communicated and shared within project groups during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Research questions: 1) How do project managers ensure that knowledge sharing is being done effectively during the Covid-19 pandemic? 2) How do project managers motivate the project members to share knowledge during the Covid-19 pandemic? Results: Social exchange has proven to be a crucial factor in motivating project members to share knowledge. The study shows that digital tools have been important to ensure that knowledge sharing can take place efficiently. However, digital tools are not a complete solution to becoming more effective. Knowledge contribution: The thesis develops previously published literature by identifying important factors for effective knowledge sharing during distance work, such as fast communication paths, follow-ups, clarity, availability, acknowledgement, and motivation.
