We present eLAMP, a PERL script, with Tk graphical interface, that electronically simulates Loop-mediated AMPlification (LAMP) allowing users to efficiently test putative LAMP primers on a set of target sequences. eLAMP can match primers to templates using either exact (via builtin PERL regular expressions) or approximate matching (via the tre-agrep library). Performance was tested on 40 whole genome sequences of Staphylococcus. eLAMP correctly predicted that the two tested primer sets would amplify from S. aureus genomes and not amplify from other Staphylococcus species. Open source (GNU Public License) PERL scripts are available for download from the New York Botanical Garden's website.

This work compared two methods to augment fine motor skill training using haptic control, including techniques that guide (e.g., virtual fixtures) and challenge the trainee (e.g., error amplification). A prototype system capable of displaying virtual fixtures or error amplification during a writing task was evaluated to determine the extent to which performance in each condition transfers to an unassisted test condition. An experiment comparing training effects was executed in which participants were trained to draw a series of letters from a foreign alphabet with the non-dominant hand. The results showed that task accuracy when training with virtual fixtures did not transfer to an unassisted test condition. Training with error amplification, in contrast, increased accuracy in unaided test trials. These findings suggest that amplifying errors may be used to accelerate fine motor training for unimpaired individuals.

The influence of hyperpolarization-activated cation current (h-current; Ih) upon synaptic integration in paravertebral sympathetic neurons was studied together with expression of hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) subunit isoforms. All four HCN subunits were detected in homogenates of the rat superior cervical ganglion (SCG) using the PCR to amplify reverse-transcribed messenger RNAs (RT-PCR) and using quantitative PCR. Voltage clamp recordings from dissociated SCG neurons at 35°C detected Ih in all cells, with a maximum hyperpolarization-activated cation conductance of 1.2 ± 0.1 nS, half-maximal activation at −87.6 mV, and reversal potential of −31.6 mV. Interaction between Ih and synaptic potentials was tested with virtual fast nicotinic excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) created with dynamic clamp. The blocking of Ih with 15 μM ZD7288 hyperpolarized cells by 4.7 mV and increased the virtual synaptic conductance required to stimulate an action potential from 7.0 ± 0.9 nS to 12.1 ± 0.9 nS. In response to stimulation with 40 s long trains of virtual EPSPs, ZD7288 reduced postsynaptic firing from 2.2 to 1.7 Hz and the associated synaptic amplification from 2.2 ± 0.1 to 1.7 ± 0.2. Cyclic nucleotide binding to HCN channels was simulated by blocking native Ih with ZD7288, followed by reconstitution with virtual Ih using a dynamic clamp model of the voltage clamp data. Over a 30-mV range, shifting the half-activation voltage for Ih in 10 mV depolarizing increments always increased synaptic gain. These results indicate that Ih, in sympathetic neurons, can strengthen nicotinic EPSPs and increase synaptic amplification, while also working as a substrate for cyclic nucleotide-dependent modulation.

A designed method of portable virtual oscilloscope with USB interface is proposed in this paper. The programmable gain amplifier (attenuator) circuit is used to adjust the different range of inputting signal to the A/D converter's. The A/D convert is realized by using ADS830E, which is a chip with maxim 60MHz sample rate and 8-bit data width. CY7C68013A, one chip of EZ-USB FX2 series, is used to achieve the data transfer to computer in block mode. The FPGA is programmed as an external host controller to control the gain amplification and attenuation circuit, and provide the sample clock for high-speed A/D converter ADS830E, and send the data to the Slave-FIFO. Application software is designed with VC++ platform to calculate and display the received data graphically.

Annotation:
Strongyloidosis is an intestinal parasitism caused by the threadworm, Strongyloides stercoralis. The parasite, occurring in dogs, primates and man, is found throughout the moist tropics, as well as in temperate areas where poor sanitation or other factors facilitate the occurrence of faecally transmitted organisms. In some parts of the world, notably Africa and New Guinea, human infections caused by S. fülleborni have been reported. In Africa, the latter is primarily a parasite of primates, but in New Guinea, no animal host is known. S. stercoralis is unique among zoonotic nematodes, in that larvae passing in the faeces can give rise to a free-living generation of worms which, in turn, give rise to infective larvae. This life history alternative (i.e. heterogonic development) acts as an amplification mechanism, increasing the population of infective larvae in the external environment. The infective larvae are active skin penetrators; infection per os , while possible, is probably of limited importance. Because the parasitic female’s eggs hatch internally, a potential for autoinfection exists when precociously developing larvae attain infectivity while still in the host. This is another virtually unique feature of S. stercoralis infections in both its human and animal hosts. Autoinfection can occasionally escape control by the host, with massive re-penetration and larval migration. This can cause pulmonary or cerebro-spinal strongyloidosis as well as fulminant intestinal parasitism. Control of canine strongyloidosis has been achieved in kennels by strategic use of anthelmintics. Given the lack of epidemiological information community-based programs to control human strongyloidosis have not been attempted. The growing importance of human strongyloidosis depends upon the unique ability of S. stercoralis to replicate within its host and to behave as a potentially fatal opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised hosts, particularly in those receiving corticosteroids.

This chapter explores the rationalities of politicians' social media uses in Web-campaigning in a party-based democracy. This is done from an in-depth case study of a Swedish politician, Nina Larsson, who with the help of a PR agency utilized several social media platforms in her campaign to become re-elected to the parliament in 2010. By analyzing how and for what purposes Larsson used social media in her Web-campaign, this chapter concludes that even though discourses of instrumental rationality and of communicative rationality were common to make her practices relevant, Nina primarily used social media to amplify certain offline news media texts as well as to commend and support other liberal party members. Hence, from this case, the authors conclude that Web-campaigning on social media is used for expressive purposes, to negotiate and maintain an attractive political image within the party hierarchy.

An alternative theoretical framework for analyzing and designing computer-supported collaborative learning environments is introduced. Bateson’s theory (1973) is used as a starting point for considering in what sense the specific dialogical conditions and qualities of virtual environments may support learning. We need more stringent analytical approaches of research that relate communicative qualities of virtual contexts to qualities of the collaborative knowledge-building process. This approach suggests that new didactic and instructional methods, addressing the learner’s communicative awareness at a meta-level, need to be developed in order to fully utilize the interactive and reflective potential of online collaborative learning. A deeper understanding of the reflective nature of the online environment and its potential for enhancing intellectual amplification will give rise to the birth of new and more innovative designs of online collaborative learning.

The digital customer experience is a top priority and major challenge for luxury service companies, who have to connect with their target customers yet strive to remain exclusive and to innovate their core offers while preserving their heritage. After a brief review of the literature on customer experience and virtual environments in luxury service contexts, this chapter focuses on e-servicescapes as a means for innovation and improvement in delivering omnichannel experiences for luxury customers. Adopting Bitner's typology of servicescapes, this chapter is based on a three case vignettes analysis that highlights how luxury service providers can use e-servicescapes to enrich their physical service experiences. Three e-servicescape strategies are identified—integration, amplification, and substitution—that ultimately support companies in renewing and improving their overall luxury propositions.

<em>Abstract.</em>—In December 1991, the National Marine Fisheries Service listed Snake River sockeye salmon <em>Oncorhynchus nerka </em>as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Snake River sockeye salmon are a prime example of a species on the threshold of extinction, with the last known remnants of this stock returning to Redfish Lake, Idaho. On the basis of critically low population numbers and coincident with the listing, a captive broodstock project was implemented by federal, state, and tribal partners as an emergency measure to save Redfish Lake sockeye salmon. During the decade of the 1990s, a total of 16 wild fish returned to Redfish Lake (0–8 per year); all were captured for the broodstock program. Amplification of the population through captive broodstocking resulted in hundreds of thousands of progeny (prespawning adults, eyed eggs, presmolts, and smolts) replanted to habitats. Between 1999 and 2002, more than 300 adults returned from the ocean from captive broodstock releases—an amplification of almost 20 times the number of wild fish that returned in the 1990s. Important lineages of Redfish Lake sockeye salmon continue to be maintained in culture as preserves for genetic variability and for numerical and demographic amplification of releases to the habitat. It is virtually certain that the broodstock program has, at least for the short-term, prevented extinction of Redfish Lake sockeye salmon. Over the course of the program, operational issues included development of successful captive husbandry procedures, maintenance of genetic diversity, assessment/enhancement of habitat carrying capacity, and intensive evaluation of restocking efforts. In this paper, we discuss these issues as a model approach.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is a common cause of death in the developing world among older persons. HIV/AIDS pandemic has led to rise in TB cases, development of drug resistance, and higher incidence of extrapulmonary disease. TB in old age can result from acquisition of new infection or reactivation of latent infection and progression to disease due to immunosenescence. It is a multisystem infection affecting virtually every organ system in the body, though pulmonary TB is the commonest manifestation. TB presents atypically in old age. The gold standard for diagnosis is isolation of the infective organism in culture, which is often difficult to achieve. The diagnostic strategies have improved with newer techniques based on nucleic acid amplification. Older patients have a higher risk of adverse drug reaction and poor treatment outcome. Control of TB requires efficiency in early detection and completion of treatment.

Vengeance. Payback. Retribution. Just deserts. Evening up the score. Punishment. If there is an ever-replicating and recurring Internet meme, it is one of revenge. Intimate photos are shared online post-relationship and end up picked up by for-profit pornographic websites. Privy information is leaked into private (narrow-cast) or semi-public or public spaces (broadcast) with massive amplifications of messages into the public sphere. Violent attacks and beat-downs are videotaped and shared on video sharing sites. Flash or cyber mobs are brought together to clean-out stores and to exact vengeance on particular businesses. Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with its nexus of pseudo-anonymity, fast dissemination of information, long-term persistence of data, and mass reach, provides multiple affordances for the exacting of vengeance. The popular culture of anonymous hacktivism and cyber-vigilantism further contribute to the sense of the Internet as an ungoverned and extralegal place. Finally, a general imprudence has meant the easy activation of Internet mobs and individuals to harm-causing rumor-sharing and behavior against others—sparked by doubtful claims or loose storytelling. ICT has enabled the spillover of real-world antipathies and dark emotions into virtual spaces, which then slosh back into the real world. This chapter examines the research in the area of vengeance and how such very human impetuses manifest online. Further, this chapter examines the design features of various ICT platforms and socio-technical spaces that may support vengeance-based communications and actions and proposes ways to mitigate some of these dark affordances.
