L’étude a caractérisé les différents segments de la filière porcine des villes de Pala et Moundou en zone des savanes au Tchad. Des enquêtes transversales et rétrospectives, associées à des observations directes, ont été menées auprès de producteurs, de transformateurs et de consommateurs répartis dans ces deux villes. Au total, 1318 porcs ont été dénombrés dont 354 femelles en âge de reproduction. Le nombre de mises bas moyen par an a été de 1,8 et la taille de la portée de 7,2 porcelets. La productivité numérique annuelle par femelle a été de 11 porcelets. Pour l’ensemble des carcasses transformées annuellement, plus de la moitié était traitée à Moundou, la seconde ville du Tchad. A Pala, les consommateurs ont préféré la viande grillée. A Moundou, les préférences ont été partagées entre la viande en friture, et la viande au four ou grillée. Les résultats ont aussi montré que l’élevage de porcs visait l’amélioration des revenus de la famille grâce à la vente d’animaux, et la production d’animaux autoconsommés. Par la diversité des produits transformés, les activités de transformation et de préparation alimentaire, les acteurs de la filière ont mis à la disposition des consommateurs des aliments carnés à un coût relativement modéré. Les innovations majeures observées dans la filière étaient une porcherie améliorée, un abattoir privé, une société d’élevage et de commercialisation des viandes, et une boucherie-charcuterie pour la transformation et la distribution. La production, la transformation et la commercialisation de la viande porcine ont généré des emplois et amélioré le revenu des différents acteurs de la filière.

De nos jours, les processus industriels d’élevage et de mise à mort des animaux de boucherie sont relégués vers des bâtiments anonymes, à l’abri des regards. Dans ces non-lieux aseptisés, mécanisés et invivables que sont les élevages et les abattoirs industriels, le rapport homme-animal est à jamais rompu, la vie et la mort animales ne font plus sens.
La mise en récit de ces non-sens pose un défi pour la création littéraire, mais quelques écrivains français contemporains s’engagent à « rendre visible ce qui a été conçu pour être invisible» (Anne Simon, « Animal: l’élevage industriel », [s. p.]). Notre analyse, qui se concentrera sur 180 jours d’Isabelle Sorente et Comme une bête de Joy Sorman, propose d’examiner comment ces ‘non-lieux’ de l’industrie de la viande deviennent, dans l’univers littéraire, des lieux symptomatiques de maux qui affligent notre société moderne. Ces huis clos cachés, que l’on analysera comme des hétérotopies foucaldiennes, nous confrontent au malaise de notre propre humanité qu’engendre le traitement des animaux sous la contrainte capitaliste de la rentabilité. En employant le topos littéraire du regard animal, les écrivains font apparaître notre « reflet dans l’œil d’une truie » (Sorente, 180 jours, 485) ; et suscitent un questionnement des non-sens de l’industrie de la viande.

Du point de vue de la société et de l’efficacité économique, les agriculteurs n’utilisent pas assez les surfaces en prairies en raison d’incitations inexistantes ou contradictoires. D’une part, les aides directes de la PAC les incitent à favoriser les surfaces en cultures au détriment des prairies. D’autre part, l’agriculteur, qui cherche à maximiser son profit, ne prend pas en compte les externalités des prairies (positives) et des cultures (négatives), en raison de l’absence d’incitations marchandes. Le marché pourrait pourtant contribuer à l’utilisation des surfaces en prairies que la société attend, car le lait et la viande produits à l’herbe ont des caractéristiques particulières qui peuvent être valorisées auprès des consommateurs. Par ailleurs, les prairies rendent de nombreux services collectifs à la société : lutte contre l’érosion, amélioration du régime et de la qualité des eaux, biodiversité… Ces caractéristiques de bien public des prairies font que des défaillances du marché demeurent et que des politiques publiques sont nécessaires. La conception de politiques de la multifonctionnalité des prairies nécessite l’étude des mécanismes de la production conjointe de produits animaux et de biens publics associés aux prairies, et celle des coûts de transaction. Ces coûts, qui sont relatifs aux transactions marchandes mais aussi à la mise en œuvre des politiques publiques, conditionnent largement l’efficacité du marché et des politiques. Les différentes formes de prime à l’herbe permettent probablement de générer des bénéfices environnementaux sans augmenter exagérément les coûts de transaction par rapport à des politiques de soutien des prix.

Le body artiste américain Ron Athey se présente, depuis 1980, comme le chaman de la génération “piercing”. Gay, séropositif, porte-parole des minorités, il propose un art corporel provocateur, agressif et violent, s’inspirant à la fois des pratiques sado-masochistes et des rites initiatiques des Indiens Mandans. Piercings, scarifications, brandings et autres “tortures” mettent en scène un corps “écœurant”, nouvelle version du corps-viande pornographique de Michel Joumiac. Faisant suite à la déferlante punk, il rejoint son compatriote Fakir Musafar dans une redéfinition esthétique du corps, avec des pratiques auto-mutilatoires et érotiques. Ce nouveau corps sanglant est aussi politique : par une suite de provocations, il dénonce la réalité d’un corps socialisé et conformiste, mettant en scène tabous et faiblesses de la société américaine. Son sang, porteur de mort, offert en martyr, propose un nouveau mode de communion.

Il faut remonter loin dans les archives de l’INRA, et plus précisément au numéro spécial du « Bulletin du CRZV de Theix » datant de l’année 1974 pour trouver un ouvrage entièrement dédié aux « vaches allaitantes »1. Quarante-trois ans plus tard, c’est avec plaisir que nous présentons ce nouveau dossier dans la revue INRA Productions Animales qui leur est entièrement consacré. Un tel regroupement d’articles sur cet animal et ce système d’élevage est donc assez rare et nous remercions chaleureusement les animateurs de la revue de l’avoir initié.
Le numéro de 1974 constatait le développement soutenu des troupeaux allaitants en France qui accompagnait la tendance à la spécialisation des systèmes de production tant vers le lait que vers la viande. Les travaux de recherches engagés mettaient en avant les spécificités de ce système peu étudié jusque-là : la productivité de la femelle, biologiquement limitée à un veau par an, impose une stratégie générale de réduction des charges et des coûts de production et par là une maximisation de l’utilisation de l’herbe dans le système fourrager. Ils se démarquaient alors des travaux réalisés sur les vaches laitières. Et pour produire efficacement de la viande, disposer d’animaux tardifs de grands formats est un atout important par la capacité qu’ils ont à déposer efficacement de la masse musculaire. Les objectifs de sélection proposés alors ont ciblé le potentiel de croissance des veaux tout en améliorant les facilités de vêlage des vaches et le format des carcasses des vaches de réforme.
Ces connaissances, développées par des chercheurs de renommée2, ont porté leurs fruits et accompagné la transformation constante du cheptel Français : le nombre de vaches allaitantes a presque été multiplié par deux (4,2 millions actuellement en France). Il est supérieur à celui des vaches laitières depuis l’année 2005 et la production de viande qui en est issue avoisine désormais 65% de la production nationale. Les vaches ont grandi et grossi (+ 5kg /an en moyenne), mais les troupeaux également. La productivité par travailleur a plus que doublé (Veysset et al 20153) sans que la productivité numérique des vaches n’en pâtisse trop.
Mais cette réussite quantitative flagrante marque le pas, et ne suffit plus pour aborder sereinement l’avenir de la production. Au niveau des exploitations de nombreux signaux défavorables se sont allumés. Les revenus des éleveurs stagnent et restent parmi les plus bas des professions agricoles. L’image de l’élevage se dégrade dans notre société urbanisée. Les bovins en général sont aussi interrogés sur leur bilan environnemental qui est sujet à controverses, et désormais c’est la finalité première de production de viande de ces troupeaux allaitants qui est en débat. Ces constats sont maintenant bien connus, et rappelés brièvement dans les introductions des articles de M. Lherm et al, et d’A. Cerles et al. Ils provoquent des inquiétudes grandissantes à tous les niveaux de la filière.
Que peuvent apporter aux débats en cours les recherches récentes ciblées vers les vaches allaitantes ? C’estce qui a motivé la réalisation de ce dossier qui vise à rassembler et synthétiser les connaissances récentes acquises, d’une part, à l’échelle de l’animal, et, d’autre part à celle du système de production.Pour introduire ce dossier, l’article de M. Lherm et al met en perspective les évolutions des « élevages allaitants » dans les quatre principaux pays européens producteurs : France, Royaume-Uni, Irlande et Espagne. L’analyse des trajectoires technico-économiques des élevages allaitants au cours des dernières décennies dans ces quatre pays montre que les choix d’investissements, de mécanisation, et d’agrandissement des structures n’ont pas été partout semblables.
Ensuite, ce dossier fait le point des avancées dans les disciplines et dans les onnaissances zootechniques de base pour la conduite des élevages bovins allaitants : l’amélioration génétique, la physiologie de lareproduction, les facteurs de variation de la production de lait des mères, la quantification de leurs besoins nutritionnels et de leur efficience alimentaire. L’article de L. Griffon et al discute de ce que l’on peut attendre des nouveaux outils génétique comme la génomique, et comment ils vont s’intégrer dans les nouveaux schémas d’amélioration. Les nouvelles connaissances physiologiques pour la maîtrise de la reproduction, pour la prévision de la courbe de lactation et pour la maîtrise de l’alimentation des vaches allaitantes sont détaillées successivement dans les articles de B. Grimard et al, de B. Sepchat et al et d’A. De La Torre et J. Agabriel. Ils fournissent de nouveaux indicateurs sur les aptitudes des animaux dont l’élevage du futur a besoin : robustesse, autonomie, efficience. Autant de propositions pour de nouvelles mesures de routine qui participeront à la détermination des nouveaux phénotypes.
L’article de M. Doreau et al éclaire le débat sur l’empreinte environnementale de l’élevage allaitant en synthétisant les connaissances actuelles permettant d’établir le bilan de ses impacts positifs et négatifs. Les controverses sur le besoin en eau, les rejets de gaz à effet de serre ou d’azote pour produire un kg de boeuf par exemple, sont encore très fortes et nécessitent des apports scientifiques de fond pour les apaiser. Même s’il est acquis qu’élevage allaitant et prairie sont liés, et que ce lien conforterait une image favorable auprès des citoyens comme auprès des consommateurs, les interrogations sociétales demandent des réponses. Les travaux en cours permettent de les affiner.
Enfin, l’article d’A. Cerles et al qui clôt ce dossier pose les fondements des futurs possibles pour l’élevage bovin allaitant à partir d’un travail de prospective pour les filières viandes réalisé sur le territoire du Massif central qui analyse les conséquences de cinq scénarios contrastés prenant en compte de puissants déterminants comme le changement climatique, l’évolution de la consommation de viande, les politiques agricoles et environnementales4. La bonne utilisation des surfaces herbagères, la maîtrise complète de la qualité des viandes sont de points incontournables à travailler dans les années à venir, et les acteurs devront faire émerger ensemble les opportunités de projets qui les aideront à avancer.
Nous sommes persuadés que ces divers sujets par la manière exhaustive et synthétique dont ils ont été traités dans ce dossier, aideront les lecteurs dans leurs recherches personnelles et à se forger leur propre expertise. Nous remercions encore tous les auteurs, les relecteurs et le secrétariat de la revue pour leurs investissements qui ont permis de mener ce travail à son terme.

Les évolutions récentes de l’approvisionnement en produits animaux au Maroc ont montré une nette diminution de la contribution des élevages extensifs. Dans un contexte de forte croissance démographique (de 15,3 à 32,9 millions d’habitants entre 1956 et 2013) associée à une urbanisation rapide (près de 60 % de la population vit dans des centres urbains), les habitudes alimentaires ont clairement évolué. La structure patriarcale de la société, où les repas étaient consommés collectivement à la maison, a été remplacée par des comportements plus individualistes. Par conséquent, la nature des produits animaux consommés par de grands pans de la population a changé. Les produits laitiers et à base de volaille apparaissent les mieux adaptés à ces changements car ils s’incorporent aisément aux repas rapides. D’un autre côté, la consommation de viande de boeuf et de mouton provenant des systèmes extensifs n’a pas évolué. Ces systèmes permettent cependant de valoriser de nombreux aliments riches en fibres, comme les ressources pastorales et les coproduits de la céréaliculture. Ceci leur a traditionnellement permis d’assurer des fonctions stratégiques comme le développement régional de zones marginales, la gestion des ressources naturelles, la valorisation efficace de l’eau à travers les produits d’élevage dans un pays affecté par des pénuries d’eau aiguës, et la création de richesses et d’opportunités d’emploi. Le fait que ces systèmes d’élevage extensifs aient été délaissés au profit de systèmes plus intensifs soulève de nombreuses questions. Ces derniers ajoutent une immense pression sur les ressources naturelles des zones où la production intensive est concentrée. Cela signifie aussi que l’approvisionnement en produits animaux s’est fortement fragilisé car il dépend d’intrants importés, comme des gènes animaux et des produits alimentaires (soja et maïs pour la volaille). Ces évolutions nécessitent que plus d’attention soit accordée aux systèmes d’élevage extensif car ils assurent un mode de production écologique tout en valorisant de grands espaces ruraux. Ces systèmes tiendront un rôle stratégique essentiel dans un avenir proche lorsque les questions de durabilité de l’approvisionnement en protéines animales et de préservation des ressources naturelles deviendront pressantes, et pour permettre le développement équilibré des différentes régions du pays.

Coronavirus had been in existence for many years, but its effects has not been so evident as the whole world experienced recently. It represents an unprecedented emergency and grave societal threat. The better way to cure the emergence disease is by protecting public health. However, governments, policy makers and the international community must quickly need to act, recognize and attempt to mitigate the negative impacts (current and potential) of the pandemic and related response efforts on key sectors that contribute to food security, nutrition and livelihoods. The livestock sector is a key contributor to these areas, especially for the world's most vulnerable populations. In the light of recent challenges in food supply chain, there is now considerable concern about the food production, processing, distribution, and demand. COVID-19 resulted in the movement restrictions of workers, changes in demand of consumers, closure of food production facilities, restricted food trade policies and financial pressures in food supply chain. The effects of COVID-19 on the livestock sector are still largely unquantified and yet to be fully felt. Formal assessments have not yet been possible, but current observations reveal disruptions to livestock value chains. Lessons from past epidemics indicate these disruptions are likely to grow, along with their dire, socio- economic consequences. Moreover, considering the doubt on how these factors will play out in various areas affected especially meat processing and distribution in the years to come from the bulk of discussion in this review.
Le coronavirus existait depuis de nombreuses années, mais ses effets n'ont pas été aussi évidents que le monde entier l'a récemment expérimenté. Cela représente une urgence sans précédent et une grave menace pour la société. La meilleure façon de guérir la maladie émergente est de protéger la santé publique. Cependant, les gouvernements, les décideurs et la communauté internationale doivent rapidement agir, reconnaître et tenter d'atténuer les impacts négatifs (actuels et potentiels) de la pandémie et des efforts de riposte connexes sur les secteurs clés qui contribuent à la sécurité alimentaire, à la nutrition et aux moyens de subsistance. Le secteur de l'élevage est un contributeur clé dans ces domaines, en particulier pour les populations les plus vulnérables du monde. À la lumière des défis récents de la chaîne d'approvisionnement alimentaire, la production, la transformation, la distribution et la demande des aliments suscitent désormais des i nquiétudes considérables. Le COVID-19 a entraîné des restrictions de mouvement des travailleurs, des changements dans la demande des consommateurs, la fermeture des installations de production alimentaire, des politiques commerciales restreintes et des pressions financières dans la chaîne d'approvisionnement alimentaire. Les effets du COVID-19 sur le secteur du bétail sont encore largement non quantifiés et ne sont pas encore pleinement ressentis. Les évaluations formelles n'ont pas encore été possibles, mais les observations actuelles révèlent des perturbations dans les chaînes de valeur de l'élevage. Les leçons des épidémies passées indiquent que ces perturbations sont susceptibles de se développer, ainsi que leurs conséquences socio- économiques désastreuses. De plus, la prise en compte du doute sur la manière dont ces facteurs joueront dans divers domaines touchés, en particulier la transformation et la distribution de la viande dans les années à venir, constitue l'essentiel de la discussion dans cette revue.

L'histoire du peuplement de l'argentine et la mise en place d'une identite culturelle s'est realisee tres tot, pratiquement des le debut de la colonisation espagnole par appropriation du sol et exploitation "de la carne" (viande de boeuf) a grande echelle. L'auteur tente de mettre en lumiere dans la premiere partie les facteurs humains, economiques et sociologiques a l'origine du developpement agro-pastoral primaire qui a debouche sur la periode de grande expansion. Les bases du developpement economique et social, aidees par les finances de l'angleterre se developpent a partir et autour du boeuf. Ce phenomene se traduit en quelques mots : la pampa, sa viande et ses gauchos ; buenos aires, son "asado" et son tango. La deuxieme periode s'etend sur le systeme traditionnel d'exploitation de proprietes concentrees et du fermage en rapport avec les industries de transformation et l'immigration de masse. Une nouvelle revolution s'engage a l'aube du troisieme millenaire, la rotation agriculture elevage avec l'emergence du nouveau consommateur. La derniere phase decrypte le systeme productif argentin, son originalite, son adaptabilite, son equilibre, sa technicite, et sa tradition de qualite dans la filiere du producteur au consommateur. A l'heure de la mondialisation ou la productivite s'essouffle, l'argentine demontre la viabilite d'un developpement traditionnel, moderne, et plein d'avenir, vers une appellation d'origine controlee. Ce travail de recherche a été réalisé à partir de l’étude de plus de 64 000 restes osseux provenant de 39 ensembles chrono-stratigraphiques issus de 7 sites répartis entre la ville et ses faubourgs. A l’aide de ce mobilier inédit, cette étude s’est attachée à appréhender, au travers des restes osseux, la ville dans ses dimensions économiques, culturelles et sociales entre les 14e et 17e siècles. Ainsi, au travers des études des proportions d’espèces, des âges et des sexes des animaux consommés, il a été possible de dresser les grandes tendances de l’approvisionnement de la ville durant ces quatre siècles tout en s’attachant à montrer la multiplicité des modes d’acquisition des animaux domestiques comme sauvages. Pour s’approvisionner en bétail, Tours met à contribution non seulement les élevages locaux consacrés à la production de viande mais aussi ceux qui produisent lait et laine. Ce travail a aussi mis en lumière aux portes de la ville le traitement industriel des carcasses de bœufs (traitement boucher et collecte de graisse). Cette étude a permis de caractériser le régime en viande des citadins et de différents contextes sociaux de la ville et notamment de mettre en évidence la grande différence dans le régime en viande qui existe à Tours entre les élites religieuses, qui se nourrissent de pièces de viande de qualité, et le reste de la population, plus particulièrement les commerçants et artisans urbains, dont l’alimentation est marquée par une forte consommation d’abatsThis research was conducted on the basis of over 64,000 bone remains from 39 chronostratigraphic units gathered from 7 sites located throughout the city of Tours and its immediate surroundings. The objective of this study was to use this unprecedented collection to size the economic, cultural and social dimensions of the city from the 14th to the 17th century through faunal remains. Thanks to the analysis of the proportions of species of animals eaten by age and gender, it is possible to define the main trends of meat supply in Tours over the period of time considered as well as to describe the many different ways of acquiring domestic and wild animals. In order to cater to its cattle need, Tours used local livestock bred for meat as well as milk and wool production. This research also sheds light on the industrial processing of beef carcasses (meat processing and fat collection). It is also possible to define the meat diet of city dwellers and of various social contexts of the city, highlighting for instance the difference in the meat diet of the religious elite, who ate prime cuts, and the rest of the population, more specifically city shopkeepers and craftsmen, whose diet mainly comprised of offal

La cité de Nîmes, territoire localisé en bordure de mer Méditerranée (Gard et partie est de l'Hérault), est créée au cours du Ier s. av. J.-C., avec à sa tête un chef-lieu (Nemausus) auquel sont rattachés de nombreux établissements répartis au sein de ce vaste territoire. La société nîmoise, tout en conservant son héritage protohistorique, est profondément influencée par le modèle socio-économique romain dans ce nouveau cadre administratif centralisé. Dans ce contexte de transition, il était intéressant d'aborder la thématique de l'alimentation carnée des habitants de cette cité entre le IIème s. av. J.-C. et le IIème s. ap. J.-C. L'étude réalisée à partir des restes fauniques des mammifères provenant du chef-lieu, d'agglomérations secondaires et d'établissements ruraux, permet d'éclairer l'exploitation des animaux dits " de bouche " dans cette cité. L'analyse propose d'aborder les questions des zones d'élevage et de la présence du bétail à l'intérieur des villes, la gestion des cheptels qui révèle des différences d'exploitation entre les troupeaux et une diversité des productions : lait, laine, force de travail et bien évidemment la viande. Les données archéozoologiques ont également permis d'observer des différences entre sites et des variations chronologiques dans le choix des espèces consommées, ainsi que dans les techniques de découpe des carcasses, les qualités de viande et la gestion des déchets d'origine animale. Les résultats font apparaître une organisation territoriale de l'économie animale nîmoise avec des lieux de production et de consommation, des activités que l'on retrouve souvent entremêlées au sein des établissements.

À partir des années 1920, un nouveau type d’alimentation florit dans les villes des États-Unis, avant de gagner le bord des grandes routes et les banlieues, puis de s’instaurer comme un symbole de la culture et du soft-power américain : le fast-food. Ces chaînes, avec McDonald’s en chef de file, séduisirent rapidement le pays. Si beaucoup d’études se sont penchées sur les États-Unis comme nation du fast-food, peu ont toutefois envisagé les liens historiques et actuels qui mêlent cette industrie à l’idéologie carniste, selon laquelle il est normal, naturel et nécessaire pour les êtres humains de manger d’autres animaux, ainsi que leurs sécrétions (œufs, produits laitiers). Cette thèse étudie la culture américaine au prisme des fast-foods et du carnisme. S’inscrivant dans la lignée des études animales critiques, elle tâche de rendre visibles les victimes exploitées et abattues au nom de l’alimentation américaine, au sein de laquelle les produits d’origine animale sont omniprésents. Many studies have considered the United States through its unique relationship to fast food, but few have explored the way in which this industry is intertwined with carnism, the ideology according to which it is normal, natural and necessary for human beings to eat other animals as well as products obtained through their exploitation (eggs, dairy). This thesis studies American culture through the prism of fast food and carnism. Following into the footsteps of critical animal studies, it endeavors to restore the visibility of the victims exploited and slaughtered for food on a massive scale. It deals with the impact that fast foods have had on American culture and American politics, and seeks to determine whether the ultra-carnism of these restaurants has spawned a specific, supersized American carnism, which, through globalization, has spread to many “McDonaldized” nations. As carnism is a diet which relies on massive animal slaughter, this work understands it as a violent phenomenon, although this violence is often unnoticeable, as it is associated with the systematic invisibilization of its victims

Face aux changements globaux et aux défis du développement soutenable, l'approvisionnement alimentaire urbain doit à la fois être analysé à travers les processus qui le sous-tendent et quantifié en termes de mobilisation des ressources naturelles et d'émission des polluants dans l'environnement. On s'est intéressé dans le cadre de cette thèse à comprendre le mécanisme d'approvisionnement en viande et en lait frais de l'agglomération parisienne sur une période longue de deux siècles et à déterminer, produit par produit, l'empreinte environnementale de l'approvisionnement en termes d'emprise spatiale, de mobilisation d'eau et de flux d'azote entre les agro-systèmes et l'environnement au début des XIXe, XXe et XXIe siècles. On a utilisé des données statistiques nationales et internationales de transport et de production agricole pour déterminer et suivre l'évolution de l'aire géographique d'approvisionnement, évaluer la fraction des subsistances régionales que réclame la capitale pour son approvisionnement, reconstituer à l'aide des modèles de rationnement et des tables d'alimentation les rations des animaux approvisionnant Paris, déterminer, en termes à la fois de biomasse, d'énergie et de protéines, le rendement en viande et en lait du fourrage aux différentes dates et enfin calculer, de manière spatialisée, l'étendue des terres agricoles (empreinte spatiale) - et les flux d'azote et d'eau impliqués dans la production. L'empreinte hydrique a pour objectif de mesurer le volume des prélèvements d'eau (pluviale et d'irrigation) et le taux moyen de mobilisation des apports d'origine pluviale. L'empreinte azotée brute désigne le tonnage total d'azote mis en jeu dans la production, dont le partage entre la production d'aliments et les pertes environnementales dépend de la manière dont fonctionnent les agro-systèmes et caractérise la profondeur de l'empreinte urbaine. On propose ainsi d'élargir la notion d'équivalent habitant (Equ/Hab) classiquement considéré comme représentatif des émissions individuelles d'azote dans les eaux usées urbaines et de définir un équivalent habitant amont qui englobe en quelque sorte tous les rejets individuels d'azote en amont de la ville, relatifs à la production de la nourriture d'un citadin. Depuis le début du XIXe siècle, l'étendue de production par habitant s'est réduite d'un facteur six (pour une consommation de viande et de lait égale à environ 2 kg N/hab/an au début du XIXe siècle comme actuellement) - la réduction étant pour 30 % environ relative au doublement du rendement en viande et en lait du fourrage - mais l'intensité d'utilisation de l'eau et la profondeur de l'empreinte par hectare ont respectivement doublé et quadruplé. On estime qu'actuellement, 45 % des pertes d'azote - soit 5,1 kg N/hab/an ou 60 kg N/ha - proviennent des fumures laissées à l'abandon, faute de n'être reconduites à l'agriculture végétale. Etant donné que la somme des importations de viande bovine, porcine et de lait représente 25 % de l'apport protéique total dans l'alimentation du Parisien et sachant que la fraction végétale de l'alimentation est à priori caractérisée par moins de pertes d'azote que la fraction animale, on estime l'équivalent habitant amont de l'ensemble de l'alimentation du Parisien, à environ 7 Equ/Hab

The study considers various attempts at Internet services market structuring in the time period between 1993 and 2004. The core assumption is that a socio-economic model of the Internet is based on the concept of the one-stop service-provider. The crucial function of the Internet, namely that of intermediator, is carried out either by "metamediators" operating in an integrated and proprietary environment based on access and guidance resources or by "inframediators" specializing in mediation resources. The prescriber function, aggregating content and service providers function, concentration of revenues function, access function, as well as trusted third-party function are developed individually by these two categories of market players. The thesis begins by describing the current problems in the fragmented world of music copyrights indicating musicians are not being paid accurately due to lack of transparency in the calculation of royalties and this lead to legal battle. Later we investigate how blockchain technology can alleviate much of the difficulties associated with this complexity. We further explore the legislative and institutional support for the technology necessary for a successful implementation, in form of legislations and governmental projects. We find out that numerous authorities have started voting favourable legislations and recognizing the technology as a valid public ledger. Eventually, we confirm our findings by analysing existing laws.

L'état viable mais non cultivable (VNC) a été étudiée en détail chez les bactéries. En revanche,l'état VNC chez d'autres micro-organismes, y compris en particulier les eucaryotes, a reçubeaucoup moins d'attention.Pour fournir des preuves concluantes de l'existence d'un état VNC chez la levure, en particulierchez S. cerevisiae, la capacité des différentes souches de S. cerevisiae à devenir viable et noncultivable après un stress sulfite avec différentes concentrations de SO2 a été étudiée parcytométrie de flux (CMF) en utilisant une sonde fluorescente comme un marqueur de viabilité(fluorescéine diacétate (FDA)) et par étalement sur milieu de culture. La capacité des cellules àrécupérer leur cultivabilité après l'élimination du stress en augmentant le pH du milieu a étéétudiée. Pour confirmer l'existence de l'état VNC, le temps de génération de cellules VNC aprèsl'élimination du stress a été comparé aux cellules cultivables et viables dans des conditions deculture identiques. En outre, la comparaison des différentes phases du cycle cellulaire descellules sortent de l'état VNC et les cellules en état VNC a été réalisée par CMF. Par ailleurs,l'implication du gène SSU1 codant pour la pompe SO2 dans l'état VBNC a été étudiée.Après l'application du stress, la comparaison entre la population cultivable déterminée sur milieude culture et la population viable évaluée par FCM met en évidence la présence de cellulesviables mais non cultivables. L'augmentation du pH du milieu permet aux cellules de S.cerevisiae viables mais non cultivables à redeviennent cultivables. Le temps de génération, decellules cultivées dans les mêmes conditions que celles rencontrées au moment de la sortie del'état VNC, est comparé au temps de sortie calculé au cours de la reprise de la cultivabilité. Ladifférence entre ces deux paramètres observés affirme que le temps mis par les cellules poursortir de l'état VNC n'était pas caractéristique d'une multiplication cellulaire.Finalement nous avons étudié l'implication du SSU1 dans l'état VNC. Les résultats montrent quele SSU1 n'est pas impliqué dans le maintien de l'état VNC chez S. cerevisiae

Artists claiming a ‘moral self’ in opposition to ‘immoral others’ are simplicating the situation with a unidimensional message, whereas frame-shifters, like Professa Jay, Mbembe or 50 Cent, turn the tables on themselves to temporarily impersonate the immoral. Their ironizing renders their comparison of frames viable instead of hegemonic.

The DARPA Aircrew Labor In-Cockpit Automation System (ALIAS) program aims to develop custom, tailorable kits that can be implemented into existing aircraft to provide autonomous and optionally piloted vehicle capabilities. In support of this program, Sikorsky Aircraft has developed kits for both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft. During the development of ALIAS kits, Sikorsky used Additive Manufacturing for prototyping and to meet critical program milestones. Additive Manufacturing was shown to be a viable solution for producing simulator and demonstrator parts required for various aspects of the program. Additively manufactured parts were used for integration demonstrations, cockpit controls evaluations, system simulation, and flight demonstrations. This paper summarizes how Sikorsky used Additive Manufacturing to support the completion of DARPA ALIAS Program milestones.

The airframe digital twin analysis framework developed at the National Research of Canada is being transposed to safe life applications for rotorcraft components. A probabilistic safe life prediction approach, consisting of uncertain material property data and uncertain load spectra is used to calculate risk assessment metrics, such as the cumulative probability of failure, the hazard rate, and the average hazard rate as a function of time. A demonstration of this approach is presented for a CH-146 Griffon component, for which the uncertain loads are estimated from a model developed through machine learning. This preliminary assessment shows the feasibility of using digital twin concepts as a viable alternative to traditional deterministic life predictions, with the potential to reduce maintenance costs and increase aircraft availability.

Aeronautical Design Standard ADS-33E-PRF is lacking in a viable hover/low-speed, short-term disturbance rejection criteria to design and analyze hold modes. The Disturbance Rejection Bandwidth and Peak criteria were developed to fill this gap, have been successfully used for design and analysis on many programs, and will be incorporated in the next revision of ADS-33 (revision F). This paper documents the development of these disturbance rejection criteria, from their theoretical background, to examples of their correlation with the rejection of physical disturbances, to the selection of the DRB boundaries for different hold modes. Simple, single-axis examples are used where appropriate to clearly demonstrate basic concepts. In addition, flight data, including assigned Handling Qualities Ratings, from a variety of sources are used to motivate the location of the DRB boundary values.

The use of continuous trailing-edge flaps (CTEFs) for primary flight control of a helicopter main rotor is studied. A practical, optimized bimorph design with Macro-Fiber Composite actuators is developed for CTEF control, and a coupled structures and computational fluid dynamics methodology is used to study the fundamental behavior of an airfoil with CTEFs. These results are used within a comprehensive rotorcraft analysis model to study the control authority requirements of the CTEFs when utilized for primary flight control of a utility class helicopter. A study of the effect of blade root pitch index (RPI) on CTEF control authority is conducted, and the impact of structural and aerodynamic model complexity on the comprehensive analysis results is presented. The results show that primary flight control using CTEFs is promising; however, a more viable option may include the control of blade RPI, as well.

Hybrid composite gear technology is being investigated to increase power density in rotorcraft drive systems. These gears differ from conventional steel gears in that the structural web material is replaced with a lightweight carbon fiber composite. Past studies have focused on performance of this technology under normal operating conditions, however, for this technology to be viable it must also withstand adverse conditions. The study presented here evaluates the performance of hybrid gears under loss-of-lubrication conditions in NASA Glenn Research Center’s Contact Fatigue Test Facility. Two experiments are presented using small-scale 3.5 inch (8.9 cm) pitch diameter hybrid gears and compared to a baseline steel gear pair. Results of these tests show that there are limitations to the use of a hexagonal interlock pattern between the steel and composite. There is also evidence that the presence of polymer in the gear during an oil out event has a potential to increase time to failure. Further studies are planned to expand on these initial findings.

Composite helicopter tailboom frames were manufactured by compression molding using a carbon fiber thermoset bulk molding compound. A mold was designed for compression molding and installed in a hydraulic press. The mold features two shear edges, guide pins and an integrated part ejection system. A material preforming method was developed to improve consistency in material distribution, which improved process robustness. A number of parts were produced and inspected for void content and dimensional stability. No significant porosity or voids were found in the samples examined. Part thickness uniformity was studied and improved, in order to meet the required tolerances. Dimensional inspection before and after a free standing post cure showed no significant part distortion. This work showed that compression molded tailboom frames are a viable alternative to current tailboom frames using continuous pre-impregnated fabric materials and cured by autoclave. This alternate processing method has the potential to reduce touch time and manufacturing costs.

A parallel evolutionary strategy is coupled to a comprehensive analysis tool, RCAS, for rotorcraft optimization and design. The evolutionary structure is based on the Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy, CMA-ES, which has proven to be a viable optimization method for rotorcraft problems. Computational efficiency tests show that for a 8 core optimization, the parallel implementation of CMA-ES, pCMA-ES, can result in a significant speedup over the serial counterpart. The pCMA-ES is applied to two active device optimizations problems. First, a previously conducted uniform inflow optimization of an active trailing-edge flap deployment schedule is revisited and optimized using freewake inflow. Next, the optimization of individual blade control, IBC, through an active pitch link is performed. Single harmonic and mixed harmonic inputs are optimized in amplitude and phase with fitness functions defined by rotor performance and hub vibrations. The optimization shows that mixed harmonic inputs can increase the performance gains compared to what single harmonics can accomplish. Furthermore, IBC is shown to be an effective method of controlling specific hub vibrations.

Fancraft™ configurations have been attempted with varying degrees of success with the Piasecki ducted fan 'AirGeeps' back in the 1960s the most notable. Technical challenges tabled these vehicles at the time in favor of open rotor (helicopter) aircraft designs. Urban Aeronautics Ltd (UA) was formed in 2000 to pursue the development of compact, internal rotor configurations that addressed the earlier challenges of Fancraft™. Tactical-Robotics Ltd (TRL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of UA focused primarily on the development of military and homeland security variants of Fancraft™ including unmanned platforms. The Cormorant is a multirole UAS platform capable of a wide range of missions into complex, obstacle ridden terrain. In flight testing since 2010, it has achieved a TRL of 5. These test results have confirmed that earlier 'AirGeep challenges' have been addressed and expected performance goals have been substantiated thus far. Fancraft™ have proven viable and future testing will focus on the cruise flight regime and more advanced levels of autonomy with the goal of attaining a TRL level 6 in the next phase of testing.

Articulating the pitch angle of a turbine blade can improve performance by maintaining optimum design incidence and thus reduce the probability of flow separation and thermal stresses developed due to aerothermal loads for variable speed gas turbine engine applications. Potential benefits to Army Aviation are highly efficient (aerodynamically) turbine blades, possible reduction of the need for active blade cooling and thermal barrier coatings, increased fuel efficiency, power density, and the ability to fly faster and longer. The goal of this effort is to assess the benefit and feasibility of an adaptable variable pitch turbine blade for maintaining attached flow and optimal thermal design for a gas turbine engine. A technology concept study has been conducted to enable a viable adaptable turbine rotor blade that can enhance the performance and efficiency of future aircraft gas turbine engines. A typical aircraft t turbine blade is used for this technology concept study. An adaptable turbine rotor blade, if made feasible, can lead to a leap ahead technology innovation in improving part-load efficiency of gas turbine engines.

Ecosystem restoration is crucial for reversing land degradation, with the global community aiming to restore 1 billion hectares by 2030. The People’s Republic of China, combating severe land degradation, has prioritized ecological restoration, achieving the United Nations’ land degradation neutrality target in 2020. This study examines the viability of investing in ecosystem restoration in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, focusing on projects at Ma’anshan Farm and Zhihui Farm, revitalized through the Asian Development Bank-supported initiatives. Findings suggest that ecological restoration can be economically viable, offering mutual benefits for the environment, economy, and society. The importance of careful design and implementation is emphasized as essential for success.

An economic and population boom in the 1890s created opportunities for architects to find work and fame in Western Australia. Architecture, therefore, became a viable profession for the first time, and the number of practicing architects in the colony (and then state) quickly grew. Associations such as the Western Australian Institute of Architects were established to organise the profession, but as the number of architects grew and Western Australian society matured, it became evident that a role for government was required to ensure practice standards and consumer protection. In 1921, therefore, the Architects Act was passed, and, in the following year, the Architects Board of Western Australia was launched. This report traces the evolution and transformation of professional architectural practice since then, and evaluates the role and impact of the Board in its first century.

To achieve the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 7 “Clean and Affordable Energy”, the most economically viable option for servicing the part of the population that is too remote or for which the national grid extension is too expensive are distributed renewable energy solutions (DREs), that is, standalone solar home systems (SHSs), mini grids, and swarm gridsi. By 2030, more than 290 million people could be connected to mini grids. Following a top-down approach to electricity access, countries of the Global South, with support of international aid and development funding, are accelerating their national grid expansion. As the national grid reaches their customers, the private sector (DRE companies) is put at danger of having to either relocate their assets or abandon them. At the same time, the DRE end-user, reached by the national grid, faces several challenges due to being exposed to a double infrastructure. These challenges can be of technical and financial nature and are caused by the assets becoming abundant or needing additional equipment to be suitable for national grid and DREs. In our new paper we investigate a technically and economically viable solution for the co-existence of the national grid−a centralized infrastructure−with mostly decentralized, renewable energy infrastructure in Global South countries. At the intersection of these two electrification pathways the question arises if the two approaches can be integrated to the benefit of society by maintaining existing assets. We assume the technical link to be a bidirectional inverter and a battery representing the point of common coupling (PCC) between national grid and currently off-grid systems. We then suggest to apply a cost recovery approach to calculate the economic value of a community power purchase agreement (C-PPA) that allows the community to enter into a trade agreement with the national grid to export at a specified rate.

The modern understanding of the state as a complex social system allows us to assert that its resilience is based on ensuring systemic homeostasis as a stabilizing dynamic mechanism for resolving contradictions arising in society associated with the threat of losing control over the processes of public administration and legal regulation. Public administration is a kind of social management that ensures the organization of social relations and processes, giving the social system the proper coordination of actions, the necessary orderliness, sustainability and stability. The problem of state resilience is directly related to the resilience of state (public) administration requires a «breakthrough in traditional approaches» and recognition of «the state administration system as an organic system, the constituent parts and elements of which are diverse and capable of continuous self-development». Within the framework of the «organizational point of view» on the control methodology, there are important patterns and features that determine the viability and resilience of public administration and regulation processes in the state and society. These include: W. Ashby's cybernetic law of required diversity: for effective control, the degree of diversity of the governing body must be no less than the degree of diversity of the controlled object; E. Sedov’s law of hierarchical compensations: in complex, hierarchically organized and networked systems, the growth of diversity at the top level in the structure of the system is ensured by a certain limitation of diversity at its lower levels; St. Beer’s principle of invariance of the structure of viable social systems. Racism and discrimination are the root causes of health disparities in our world. Most schools of public health fail to address these issues. Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a viable framework for exploring how racial bias is reinforced at various levels in our society and how privilege differs based on race. Health promotion pedagogy informed by CRT and social justice can be an opportunity to explore relationships, social cohesion, and promote health equity. This paper describes and explores how an undergraduate/graduate public health instructor and students at the University of North Carolina Greensboro presented materials and speakers that influenced how students perceived racism and discrimination as a public health problem. Students learned about perspective, privilege, and positionality during guest interviews throughout the class. Excerpts of student essays presented in this paper demonstrate how college health courses like this one can transform, change, heal, and connect students with a world that dismantles racism and promotes health equity and justice for all. Teaching public health and social justice requires a different teaching approach and unique content developed in an authentic way from individuals with lived experience of social justice issues. Elevating CRT as a framework and giving voice to the historically minoritized and marginalized must be the goal of transformative pedagogy in health promotion. Now is the time.

Key Enabled Technologies(KETs) have the potential to impact on many aspects of society, whilst transforming European industrial competitiveness at the local, national, and global scales. Studies funded by the European Commission have shown that European advances in six technology areas would not only enhance the leadership and competitiveness of European business, but also drive advances across Europe’s business sectors and society. Despite their applicability across sectors, KETs represent a change, and a new manner of moving forward. Business and society view change both positively, welcoming advances in technology and new tools and products to make life somewhat easier for citizens, and negatively, recognising that with change comes risk and a reticence to change. Like society, different industrial sectors will view innovation and new technology differently. As such, each sector requires a slightly different approach to energise KET uptake into their daily operations and lives. Recognition of this reality underpinned the development of this roadmap. Stakeholders have been engaged across the Atlantic Area, through the use of online surveying, face-to-face workshops, and one-to-one interviews conducted virtually. This has enabled the authors to develop an awareness of the maritime scene and community which offers such opportunities and potential for KETs. It also provided insights into the reality of energising this uptake when framed in the context of social, financial and governance realities. Over the course of the project, the team conducted an analysis of the maritime sector, to identify and map out any KET applications that were in development. In parallel, a diverse pool of academic and commercial stakeholders identified the opportunities they could see for KET applications in the maritime sector. They also identified factors which restrict uptake, and restrain viable trans- disciplinary innovations from effectively making it to market. Stakeholder perspectives were combined with the investigative findings to develop a vision for a KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. The barriers and challenges shaped a range of proposed actions, which target different facets of the innovation ecosystem to ease growth and shape development. These actors were iteratively reviewed by stakeholders, and amended accordingly. These actions form the basis of this roadmap, a proposed path towards realising a vibrant growing KET-maritime innovation ecosystem. It contains a suite of 60 inter-linked, systemic actions, framed within 35 action areas to achieve 9 core goals, spread across 5 thematic agendas (policy, funding, building a sustainable innovation ecosystem, capacity building, and awareness raising). This envisioned KET-maritime innovation ecosystem fosters application-led innovation, and advances societal and market benefits for all. Each of the 5 thematic agendas are summarised as a policy brief, provided in the Appendices. The actions applicable to each policy brief are detailed in this report, alongside a proposed timeframe for implementation. Each action is codified, and can be traced through the iterative review process using the provenance table supplied. The potential for KET applications across the Blue Economy is extensive, and all sectors offer at least some opportunities for KETs. Within this landscape, the following sectors are identified as having strong growth potential where KET’s can help to drive that growth: Fisheries and aquaculture; Blue biotechnology; Maritime surveillance; Marine renewable energy; Ship and boat building. Within these sectors, four specific KET-maritime applications research priorities are highlighted: Advanced materials application in marine renewable energy; Photonics application in maritime surveillance; Micro- and nano-electronics in maritime surveillance; Advanced manufacturing techniques in ship and boat building. Finally, the project team would like to take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders who participated in the workshops, interviews, and review activities which culminated in this roadmap.
