In recent years, to cope with the increasing uncertainty of load side, the adjustability of load side is constantly improved. However, the power deviation of user side hasn’t been well adjusted due to the lack of the channel. This not only makes users face higher risks, but also makes incomplete use of sufficient load side adjustable resources. One of the effective ways to solve the problems above is user-side contract power transfer transaction. In this paper, main forms of adjustable load in major fields are discussed at first, then the user-side contract power transfer transaction mechanism considering adjustable load is proposed, finally the validity of the proposed mechanism is verified by a study case.

As the number of wheelchair users increases, safety accidents related to wheelchairs are increasing. Wheelchair training has been emphasized as a way to deal with this problem. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a wheelchair training structure as an adjustable type and verify its usefulness. Methods: In order to develop the wheelchair training structure as an adjustable type, idea meetings were held by related experts. The structure reflecting the ideas generated by the expert meetings was drawn through 3D modeling and it was produced by a commissioned woodwork shop. Then the final products including the adjustable curb and stairs were evaluated to verify their effectiveness and user satisfaction. Ten physical or occupational therapists rated satisfaction using the Korean-Quebec User Evaluation of Satisfaction with Assistive Technology, and four manual wheelchair users rated effectiveness using the wheelchair Skill Test-Questionnaire 5.0. And the evaluations were conducted twice before and after the 10 wheelchair training sessions each with 30 min duration. Results the result of satisfaction evaluation of the adjustable curbs and stairs by the 10 therapists showed that effectiveness was the highest, and the size and weight were the lowest. As for the effectiveness evaluation by the four manual wheelchair users, both the capacity and confidence of all subjects improved. Conclusion: This study confirmed that training using this type of wheelchair training construct will help wheelchair users improve the confidence and skills of using wheelchair which are essential for their safety and independent mobility. Therefore, if the adjustable curbs and stairs are to be used in the rehabilitation process of early manual wheelchair users, it is expected to contribute to the advancing their successful social return.

This Master’s thesis is to delineate a luminaire design which has a flexible functional form, can be controlled by the user, and which creates multidirectional light distribution within an indoor space.  A lighting solution with varied light distributions can change a space’s different spatial experiences, granting a flexibility which is controlled by the user to direct light rays into walls, floors, ceilings or to create variations of these. A flexible luminaire in terms of light distribution allows, vertical and horizontal surfaces to be valued equally, because through a minimal intervention it is possible to shift the focus from one surface to another, providing a holistic interplay in space. The participants, who took part in the evaluation program of the final luminaire, freely introduced their possible activities in the predefined dining room, with different lighting proposals according to personal preferences of spatial experience. The designed luminaire was the only accessible tool to influence the space, and they managed to achieve their ideal atmospheres, and experiences, by the process of adjusting the luminaire with controlled light distribution. The varied results of the patterns of brightness and darkness on the vertical and horizontal surfaces in the predefined real space, prove the flexibility of the final design of the luminaire, MM Lamp. The luminaire fulfills the predefined design objectives of being user adjustable as well as creating varied light distribution.

Human-controlled robots are utilized in many situations and such use is becoming widespread. This thesis details research that allows a single human to interact with a team of robots performing tasks that require cooperation. The research provides insight into effective interaction design methods and appropriate interface techniques. The use of team-level autonomy is shown to decrease human workload while simultaneously improving individual robot efficiency and robot-team cooperation. An indoor human-robot interaction testbed was developed at the BYU MAGICC Lab to facilitate experimentation. The testbed consists of eight robots equipped with wireless modems, a field on which the robots move, an overhead camera and image processing software which tracks robot position and heading, a simulator which allows development and testing without hardware utilization and a graphical user interface which enables human control of either simulated or hardware robots. The image processing system was essential for effective robot hardware operation and is described in detail. The system produced accurate robot position and heading information 30 times per second for a maximum of 12 robots, was relatively insensitive to lighting conditions and was easily reconfigurable. The completed testbed was utilized to create a game for testing human-robot interaction schemes. The game required a human controlling three robots to find and tag three robot opponents in a maze. Finding an opponent could be accomplished by individual robots, but tagging an opponent required cooperation between at least two robots. The game was played by 11 subjects in five different autonomy modes ranging from limited robot autonomy to advanced individual autonomy with basic team-level autonomy. Participants were interrupted during the game by a secondary spatial reasoning task which prevented them from interacting with the robots for short periods of time. Robot performance during that interruption provided a measure of both individual and team neglect tolerance. Individual robot neglect tolerance and performance did not directly correspond to those quantities at the team level. The interaction mode with the highest levels of individual and team autonomy was most effective; it minimized game time and human workload and maximized team neglect tolerance.

Sustainable efficient lighting has become as one of the most important issues in the office environment In Sweden, energy demand for lighting corresponds to 20% of the total electricity used in office buildings (1), while It has been estimated that lighting accounts for about 20% of the total power generation of the world (2). This thesis investigates how to make lighting in offices more sustainable and focuses on energy efficiency, to save energy through creating guidelines related to light source technologies, lighting control systems and the user preferences. Then those guidelines are applied to an existing office through suggesting a new lighting design. The existing office in this case is the ÅF company 10th office floor located in Stockholm, Sweden. This investigation methodology consists of two main parts literature review and Project (case) study. In the first part, methods used are a combination of literature review related to saving energy through sustainability in lighting and how light source technology, lighting control systems and the effect of user behavior could help to create more energy efficient lighting systems. In the second part, the methods are qualitative such as surveys, quantitative methods and personal observations. The used methods helped to create guidelines for the new suggested lighting design for ÅF 10 th office floor part. The Results shows that the new suggested lighting design saves energy up to 31.96% more than the current lighting situation.

Image sharing addresses a fault-tolerant protection mechanism for important images. In a typical image sharing scheme, the generated shadow images usually have a noise-like appearance that conceals the secret image completely, but this makes them difficult to identify and manage. This paper proposes an adjustable user-friendly image sharing scheme in which each generated shadow image looks like a shrunken replica of the original image. It provides an easy-to-identify interface for managing the shadow images. In the proposed scheme, the original image is divided into an obvious component and a secret component. The obvious component contains the data that can be directly observed in the shadow images, and it determines the quality of the generated shadow images. The secret component is processed using the (t, n) threshold mechanism to conceal the details of the original image. Compare with previous user-friendly image sharing schemes, the proposed method can reconstruct the original image without any loss and still has the small-size shadow images. Notably, the qualities the generated shadow images are adjustable in the proposed scheme. It provides high flexibility for designing user-friendly image sharing scheme with satisfactory quality of shadow images in different applications.

Bag has become part of our everyday life. Instead of showing personal style or an accessory of dress, bag is a private space for carrying personal stuff. For some user it is more like a “portable home”. They keep us contact with our daily life. We use them every single day. Though the creation of bag has been centuries, we still find problems while using them. Therefore how to improve such well-developed product became my issue. The concepts of this project come from observation, interview and self-experience of using bag. The character and usage of bag are analyzed during the process of finding direction of concept development. The specification, which contains form, size, material, structure, and manufacture process of each concept model is arranged and revised for applicable result. Inspired by the process of design and form of project, the main theme of this project is “DNA”. This project shows the continued evolution as well as DNA of bag. Various faces of bag have been revealed through adjustable usage and structure. The appearance, interior and elements of bag reflect the changing interaction between user and bag. As the outcome of this project, five concepts were selected and made into nine prototypes.

One-dimensional photonic crystal structure, the main basis in this study, is calculated in numerical simulation theoryby the use of transfer matrix method (TMM) to design an electric wave filter making the changeof design wavelength and structure and increasing photonic band gap. Photonic band gap (PBG) signifies that photonic crystal is with the nature of band gap structure so thatelectromagnetic wavescannot penetrate through the photonic crystalsin a certain range of frequency. First, to achieve this effect, the electric wave filter, based on the same material, only needs to bechanged on the design wavelength. By the way of this mode, we combine the structure of different design wavelength which will filter out two different bands of wavelength.Next, we overlap the two PBGs for increasing the scopeof PBG. If the scope of PBG can be increased,we can apply this wayto block the frequencyof ultraviolet rays. As the structure of the cycle, two materials with different photonic crystalsare added a layer of metal which can reflectultraviolet wavelength. After that, based on the former structure, we only changethe thicknesses of two kinds of photonic crystals in this period and then design the second structure which can reflect the wavelength of visible light. Westack these two structures and apply thewavelength with the reflection from ultraviolet to visible light to blockthe band of ultraviolet to visible light.

The thesis is to research and implement an instrument-used switching-mode power supply (ISMPS) with output voltage and current adjustable. The ISMPS is composed of an EMI filter, a power factor corrector (PFC), and a DC/DC converter. The DC/DC converter is constructed by phase-shifted full-bridge (FB) converter with zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) technique. The control strategy is designed to be capable of constant voltage (CV) mode and constant current (CC) modes, which are built by voltage-adjust control (VAC) and current-limit control (CLC). A linear regulator (LR) is installed at the output end to achieve adjustable output voltage/current, and good regulation. A small-signal modeling for describing the system is conducted. A compensation work has been made to stabilize the system performance. And also, a gain/phase analyzer HP-4194A is used to tune to reach the theoretical estimation. Finally, a design example of a 500W ZVS-PWM ISMPS is examined to assess the system performance with the specification of an output voltage 0-50V and an output current 0-10A. The proposed ISMPS can actually provide an efficiency up to 90% and good load regulation within ±1% at the load condition of Vo=50V and Io=10A.

Annotation:
An issue of great concern for amputees continues to be lack of proper fit and comfort in their sockets. This lack can often be attributed to changes in the shape of the residual limb that cannot be compensated for by existing prosthetic socket technology. In regions where cost is a prohibitive factor in the replacement of ill-fitting prosthetic sockets, the need for a volume adjustable, and potentially longer lasting, socket design is abundant. This research focuses on designing a volume adjustable lower limb prosthetic socket that accommodates the needs of amputees in underdeveloped countries using collaborative design techniques. Though advocated as a means of accurately identifying and satisfying their needs, including end-users in the design process often adds an additional layer of complexity because of differences in culture, language, or geography among the participants. This research therefore includes a study in which product design techniques were applied to the same volume adjustable socket design problem with a variety of users – typical users, lead users, and new Empathic Lead Users - from different countries, one developed and one developing. To overcome differences among participants, this research includes an alternative strategy to create Empathic Lead Users (ELU) from non-user product design engineers through the use of simulated lead user experiences. As a result of this study, customer needs analysis with ELU helps to identify 95% of traditional and lead user customer needs and 100% more latent needs, and possibly more avenues for product innovations, than interviewing lead or traditional users alone. The concepts generated by all users were also compared. Based on the resulting concepts’ novelty, variety, quality, and quantity, all users were able to satisfactorily complete the concept generation exercises and produced competitive design solutions. Using the concepts generated during this co-design study, a volume adjustable socket was developed. The final socket design, based on the analogous rotational movement of a camera aperture, is pursued through mechanical and subject testing. Early users of the socket liked the design and it has been demonstrated to provide the necessary volume adjustments, but future design iterations to improve its comfort are necessary.

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) was first described by Rosch et al. in 1969, and in 1982, Colopinto et al. described its first clinical application in a patient with cirrhosis and variceal hemorrhage. It was not until 1988 that the first metal-lined shunt was created, and in 1997 the first polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-lined stent was used in humans for shunt revision after stenosis, created by pinning the Gore PTFE graft material between two metal stents. Introduced in 2000, the Viatorr stent graft is now the most commonly used device for TIPS. One of the major side effects of TIPS creation is hepatic encephalopathy (HE). This chapter discusses the adjustable small-diameter transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt.

This chapter describes the use of a standard mushroom-retained gastrostomy (MRG) tube for stenting benign esophageal strictures. For effective long-term management, an esophageal stent should be easily placed, repositioned, and retrieved and also resistant to migration. An MRG tube can be used as a replaceable stent to allow oral feeding in the setting of benign esophageal stricture. The tube is readily available, easily adjustable, and an easily removable option. Using standard interventional techniques, the strictured segment is first dilated with a balloon catheter. The gastrostomy tube is then deployed over a guidewire. The tube spans the stricture, allowing for oral feeding.

This chapter discusses the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for intractable OCD. In contrast to ablative procedures, DBS has the advantages of being reversible (explantable) and adjustable. In 2010, the FDA approved a Humanitarian Device Exemption (HDE) for ventral capsule/ventral striatum DBS in intractable OCD, based upon the device’s safety and its probable benefit, for up to 4,000 people a year in the US. DBS is only suitable for adult patients who remain severely ill despite multiple medication trials and adequate treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy. Further research is needed to further test the efficacy of DBS in OCD, compare targets, identify predictors of response, and optimize programming. Future DBS systems may take advantage of closed loop technology in which feedback from the brain is used to adjust stimulation automatically according to the patient’s changing needs.

An increasing number of approaches permit psychiatrists to directly stimulate the brain. Such therapies are sometimes referred to as neuromodulation, as psychiatrists can either excite or inhibit neuronal firing in the brain. This chapter reviews two such technologies—transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS). Both techniques have FDA approval and are moving into mainstream therapeutic use. Daily prefrontal TMS for 4–6 weeks is FDA approved for treating depression, with minimal side effects. It is now accepted in most treatment algorithms as an approach for patients who have not responded to medications or talking therapy. DBS has virtually replaced ablative neurosurgery for use in medication-refractory movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease (PD), where it has the advantages of being reversible (explantable) and adjustable. DBS is now being studied in severe psychiatric conditions, such as intractable obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and treatment resistant depression (TRD).

Designing a secure, resilient and user-friendly access control system is a challenging task. In this article, a threshold-based location-aware access control mechanism is proposed. This design uniquely combines the concepts of secret sharing and distance bounding protocols to tackle various security vulnerabilities. The proposed solution makes use of the fact that the user carries around various personal devices. This solution offers protection against any set of (t-1) or fewer compromised user’s devices, with t being an adjustable threshold number. It removes the single point of failure in the system, as access is granted when one carries any set of t user’s devices. Additionally it supports user-centered management, since users can alter the set of personal devices and can adjust the security parameters of the access control scheme towards their required level of security and reliability.

This study offers a new method for understanding the likelihood of acceptable fit for users of adjustable products and environments and is a useful tool for aiding the designer in making decisions about problems involving human variability. Accommodation, which describes the ability of a user to interact with a device or environment in a preferred way, is a key product performance metric. Methods that offer a better understanding of accommodation of broad user populations would allow for the design of products that are more cost-effective, safer, and/or lead to greater levels of customer satisfaction. This work uses parametric studies to explore the characteristics of a target user population and the probability of accommodating individuals of a given body size. Performance regions are identified in both the problem’s design space (the product dimensions under consideration) and the anthropometry space of the target population (the relevant body dimensions of product users). The existence of probability contours is a result of outcome uncertainty due to anthropometry-independent user preference, and the analysis is achieved by assessing binary accommodation of individuals using a “virtual fit” method with many iterations. Two case studies, one univariate and one bivariate in both performance and anthropometry spaces, are presented. An important outcome of the decision making framework described in this work is the ability to intuitively gauge who in the population of target users will be disaccommodated by a design and how to improve overall accommodation.
