The pursuit of quality through quality assurance/control programs has been augmented in the recent past by implementing an organization-wide Total Quality Leadership (TQL) program at the Repair Division, Marine Corps Logistics Base, Albany, Georgia. Most TQL concepts have been successfully integrated into the culture of the Repair Division. One concept yet to be integrated deals with capturing the costs related to achieving quality. This TQL concept known as 'Cost of Quality' is the subject of this thesis. This study evaluates the TQL program, quality control program,- and the cost accounting systems to determine if implementing a quality cost measurement system would provide benefits for better managing quality related costs. From this evaluation, a model of the Repair Division's cost of quality was derived. Also outlined in the study were procedures which guide the implementation of a quality cost measurement system. The analysis revealed that the implementation of a quality cost measurement system would be a beneficial tool for management. This system would allow management to plan and control the allocation of funds used to achieve goals related to quality. The need to improve the cost accounting systems and better tracking of detailed production costs are recommended.

Jobst, Marko. „The movement-image of the movement-machine : Deleuze, cinema and the London Underground“. Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1444758/.

Annotation:
This thesis addresses the London Underground in the light of Gilles Deleuze's philosophy of cinema. The first chapter gives an overview of the aspects of Deleuze's philosophy, which are of particular interest in the context of architectural theory. The main postulates of transcendental empiricism are explained, followed by the four major concepts: space, time, image and event. The second chapter deals with Deleuze's understanding of the cinematic frame. The relationship between the frame and the content of framing is shown as possibly inherently dynamic. A description of the major points regarding the Underground corridor follows, with the explanation of the condition of the walking body and its relation to the surrounds. Finally, the notion of the cinematic frame and acts of framing are utilised for the conceptualisation of the Underground corridor, showing the notion of movement to be of crucial importance. Chapter three regards the platform event in relation to the cinematic shot, which is explained to be a matter of conversion of movement. The specificity of the Underground platform is related, and the relationship between the body and the moving object of the train explained. The conjunction between the platform and the shot is then proposed, to show that the platform stands at a point of conversion of movement, transforming body's relationship to its environment. Chapter four is the discussion of the Underground carriage, and its understanding in the light of Deleuze's conceptualisation of the cinematic close-up. The close-up is shown to represent a specific, qualitative transformation, which marks the shift of movement in the direction of expression. The concept of any-space-whatever is then related as an example of Deleuze's transformation of the close-up of the face to the object and then to a spatial figure. The specifics of the Underground carriage are related, introducing the notion of the motionless body inside a moving confinement, as well as the presentation of 'facialisation.' The third part of the chapter sees the explanation of the carriage event in the light of the close-up/affection-image, and it pays special attention to the transformation of movement into expression. Finally, Chapter Five sees the discussion of the Underground in general, and its relation to the city. Deleuze's understanding of the concept of montage is explained in particular its relationship to time and construction of continuities and wholes across ruptures. The Underground is discussed as an urban system and its relation to the city that harbours it addressed. Finally, a particular understanding of urban montage is proposed, one wholly dependent on the presence of the Underground system.

Annotation:
The increased impact on mine subsidence during the recent years led to the development of two semi-empirical prediction methods for the eastern United States coalfields. The methods are based on an extensive data bank, which includes a total of twenty three panels, from nine case studies, which were instrumented during this research effort. An extensive field monitoring program, utilizing a digital computer tacheometer, was developed and implemented for this purpose. The first prediction method using a profile function, provides a fast and convenient method for prediction of vertical movements above mine panels of uniform geometry. More specifically the hyperbolic tangent function is utilized, as adapted to regional data. The developed model is capable of accurate general predictions for the Eastem U.S. coalfields. The second method is based on the Budryk-Knothe influence function. The parameters used in this method were mainly determined from the monitored case studies. The use of such a method requires primarily a computer, however, it can negotiate mine sections of complex conditions and can calculate subsidence as well as any other mode of deformation on the surface. For the prediction of the parameters required for the application of both methods a number of relationships between mining and subsidence factors were established through the analysis of the collected data. Computer software were developed for the analysis of the data as well as for the application of the prediction methods.

Annotation:
Translating and reading western modernist literature played a vital role in forging contemporary Chinese literature and China’s mode of subjectivity, but little has been written about them, and even less about the interconnections between them. My PhD thesis aims to offer a comprehensive interpretation of the phenomenon of translating and reading modernist literature in Mao’s China, focusing particularly on translators’ and readers’ agency, and their collective construction of a multifaceted discourse of subjectivity. The central questions I try to answer in my thesis are: For what “practical” purposes or needs did the Chinese Communist Party order the translation and publication of these modernist texts which are clearly against the ideology of Mao’s China? What mark did translators from state controlled institutions leave in the intellectual history of China? Why did western modernist literature of 1950s cause such a strong response from the intellectual youth in the 1970s? In Mao’s China, there were a number of modernist literature texts that were translated and published. They were only intended to be available for a very limited readership consisting of high ranking party officials, but ended up being leaked, and eventually became extremely popular in the underground reading movement. I decided to focus on the three most widely read texts, which are On the Road (first translated into Chinese in 1962), Catcher in the Rye (first translated into Chinese in 1963), and Waiting for Godot (first translated into Chinese in 1965). By mapping the translation process and the underground reading of these texts into the context of the politics of China from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, my study provides three arguments which attempt to answer the three questions raised above: 1) Mao’s China encountered similar modernity situations so that western modernist literature after World War II was translated for internal circulation and criticism; 2) Thanks to the subjectivity of translators from state controlled institutions, their translations paved the way for the rising of the self, the end of revolution, and the individualization of Chinese society; 3) As early as in the 1960s to 1970s, the conscious reading of modernist literature brought alternative understandings of self and ways of being, and the sent-down Chinese youth have new self-projection by reading these texts. Few researchers have studied translation beyond analysis of target language text (TLT), while my methodological innovation is to connect three traditionally isolated subjects into a single continuing process of meaning giving activity: the source text and their role in forging western subjectivity; translators and their translations in Mao’s context; and Chinese underground reading of western literature from late 1960s to 1970s. This is a comparative and theoretical study of the three chosen texts in their historical contexts in order to reconsider the cultural significance of translating and reading modernist literature in Mao’s China. I hope it will modify our view of translation and reading history in Mao’s China, contributing to theories of subjectivity and the plurality of Chinese modernity discourse.

This ethnography explores the underground art world in Portland, Oregon by showing how a Portland area artist collective, Oregon Painting Society, navigates their art world. Participant observation, in-depth interviews, and a short latent content analysis triangulate data to show the features and values of the underground art world. Using Becker's concept of art worlds, I show how artists working outside of a traditional art career in a commercial gallery system do their work by exploring how Portland's art world is structured and sustained. I find that group work, cooperation, and resource sharing in a vibrant neighborhood based social network enables artists to substitute resources usually provided by gallery representation and sustain their ability to make artwork without financial support. This is a network that rejects the competitive structure of the commercial system and runs more smoothly the more artists participate in it. I also explore the reasons for Portland's particular ability to support this kind of environment, citing geographic proximity to other art cities, DIY cultural roots, neighborhood structure, affordable city amenities, and a creative class population.

Although the Soviet partisan movement in the Second World War was one of a kind, in the sense that it was far more substantial than any comparable phenomenon in the West, the Jewish role within it had its own historical peculiarities. If Jewish motives for taking up arms against the occupying forces of the Third Reich were much the same as those of other partisans, they were forced to come to terms with the anti-Semitism not only of their Axis foes, but of so-called collaborators, anti-Nazi but anti-Soviet nationalists, and anti-Nazi but anti-Semitic Soviet partisans. This subject has not been explored by Soviet historians for obvious ideological reasons and the scant literature in English so far is limited largely to eye-witness accounts and insufficient statistics, which this thesis makes use of. Its purpose is to attempt to ascertain the Jewish contribution to the Soviet partisan movement and the circumstances, some of them unique, that defined it.

Giombolini, Alecia Jay. „Anarchism on the Willamette: the Firebrand Newspaper and the Origins of a Culturally American Anarchist Movement, 1895-1898“. PDXScholar, 2018. https://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/open_access_etds/4471.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
The Firebrand was an anarchist communist newspaper that was printed in Portland, Oregon from January 1895 to September 1897. The newspaper was a central catalyst behind the formation of the culturally American anarchist movement, a movement whose vital role in shaping radicalism in the United States during the Progressive Era has largely been ignored by historians. The central argument of this thesis is that the Firebrand publishers' experiences in Gilded Age Portland shaped the content and the format of the newspaper and led to the development of a new, uniquely American expression of anarchism. Anarchism was developed in response to the great transformations of the nineteenth century and the anxieties of a society that was being entirely restructured as industrialization and urbanization took hold across the globe. The anarchism of the Firebrand was a regional response to these same changes, an expression of radical discontent at the way in which life in Portland and the Pacific Northwest was rapidly changing. According to the Firebranders, the region had transformed from a place of economic opportunity and political freedom into a region driven by economic and political exploitation. Thus, the newspaper developed a uniquely western American perspective and expressed a formation of anarchist communism that was steeped in the history and culture of the United States. The newspaper was just as influenced by centuries of American libertarian activism as it was by outright anarchist philosophy. As a result, the newspaper frequently included articles about free love and women's rights, issues outside of the typical purview of anarchist communist political philosophy. This Americanized expression of anarchist communism allowed the newspaper to expand beyond the movement's core urban, immigrant audience and attract culturally American, English-speaking radicals to the cause. In the Fall of 1897, after two years and eight months in publication, three of the Firebrand publishers were arrested for the crime of sending obscene materials through the mail. The Firebrand's frank discussions of sexuality, women's rights, and free love offended the local censor and gave law enforcement an excuse to prosecute Portland's anarchists. The ensuing trial would result in the newspaper's closure. Nonetheless, a new intellectual movement had been established, and though the movement would remain small, it would play a disproportionately large role in shaping radical American politics and culture for the next two decades.

Annotation:
This thesis analyses Fyodor Dostoyevsky's discussion of individual radicalisation and terrorism in three of his major novels: Notes from Underground, Crime and Punishment and The Devils. Whilst the issues of radical ideology and terrorism have often been independently discussed by Dostoyevsky scholars, little attention has been devoted to the study of the process of radicalisation undergone by Dostoyevsky's protagonists, whereby the extreme fulfilment of radical ideals culminates in political violence. This investigation traces the evolution of Dostoyevsky's individual in the context of the radically changing socio-political environment of nineteenth-century Russia. The development of this individual will be examined throughout the novels as he initially questions, and is hostile to, radical ideology, gradually embraces its tenets and tests its validity through the use of violence and eventually engages in terrorist activity. Dostoyevsky felt himself impotent in the face of the gradual assimilation of utilitarian, materialistic and nihilist ideals by the new generation of Russian intellectuals. In the emulation of Western revolutionary culture, he came to see a threat to Russian nationhood, to true Russian identity and to traditional Russian values such as Orthodox Christianity. In his novels he sought to examine and question the ideologies of leading theorists influenced by Western radical thought; ideologies that he believed were flawed, deceptive and contradictory. This study focuses on the development of the themes of radicalisation and terrorism in the three chosen novels. Emphasis is laid on the devastating impact of radical ideology and terrorist activity on the individual.

The subject of this doctoral dissertation is a thematic study of the representation of the Resistance in French fiction films since 1944. This work encompasses the larger fields of history and memory of the Resistance and the Second World War. It is a cinematographic historiography which explores 50 years of film production about the French Resistance. It analyzes the historical choices put forward by film, the censorship which had to be overcome, as well as the sources it used. It also examines how film contributes to the formation of historical consciousness. These developments are compared with the written history of the Resistance. The sources for this work include both visual and written materials: films, preliminary documents, censorship files, and film criticism. Nine interviews provide an additional aspect to this corpus. The parallel drawn between the historiography of the Resistance and the films allowed for a better understanding of the fluctuating relationship between film and historical studies. Also, the examination of this filmography from the perspective of women resisters permitted filmic analysis to move beyond the traditional and politically oriented evaluations of films based on Gaullist or communist memory.

The research analyses the processes of artist's integration from underground scenes and social movements to mainstream markets in Milan and Berlin, focusing on the transformations of urban contexts in the age of post-fordism. In the first chapter, the author takes into account the various theoretical frameworks of the studies on integration, considering the social movements studies approach (Castells and Pruijt), the subcultural studies approach (Cohen and Hebdige), the approach of the artistic critique developed by Boltanski and Chiappello and the studies on symbolic and subcultural capital (Bourdieu, Harvey an Thornton). The second chapter defines the methodological paths of the research, identifying four main urban variables that have been hypotisized as transforming factors related to integration (urban market, real estate, mobilisation cycles and institutional paths) and establishing definitions for the main topics (creative industries, underground, mainstream, new media arts). Chapter three and four are the ethnographic reports of the fields of Milan and Berlin: the main focuses here are on how the four urban variables have influenced integration paths, biographies and choices of activists and artists. In the analytical chapter the author reflects on the relationship between urban spaces, windows of opportunity, collective symbolic capital, subcultural identity and integration; here, there is a deepening on the relationships between transformations in urban economy, flexibility in labour markets and subcultural social cohesion. In the conclusions, the author optimises and re-defines the variables and suggests a general scheme for the interpretation of integration paths.

The present research project aimed to investigate the struggles undocumented Sudanese migrant face to circumvent legal and geographical borders and to gain some form of citizenship. I focused on the kind of journeys, referred to as sombok, their precondition, narration and social practices implemented along the irregular routes from Sudan to the United Kingdom. In doing so, particular interest was paid to the production, circulation and resilience of migratory knowledge roaming in transnational networks and resulting in consequent mobility patterns, tenaciously and ceaselessly reproduced. Indeed, despite the increasing difficulties, due to massive investment in border patrolling and externalisation of controls, it is apparent that this does not deter people from migrating and neither does it prevent arrivals and movements in Europe.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
In the present work, the considered natural hazards concern to ground movements resulting from two main phenomena : shrinkage and swelling of clay soils and ground subsidence due to the presence of underground cavities. These phenomena cause differential ground settlements which generate disorders on the structures erected in their neighborhood : damage and cracking of masonry load-bearing walls, especially at the building corners. These structural degradations cause important economic consequences and losses in the case of dwelling houses. These damages result from a lack of masonry resistance or a small stiffness of the foundation system as well as a limited effectiveness of bracing system. This research aims to analyze the vulnerability of buildings and to propose a reinforcement method for the existing constructions as well as design recommendations for structures. These topics require a thorough understanding of the ground movements phenomenon and their transfer as actions on a structure. For this purpose, four main steps were performed : a literature review, an analysis of soil-structure interaction, a development of a damage justification and a method for reinforcement or design, as well as a probabilistic analysis of risk. The literature review with functional and statistical analysis, as a first step, provides a profile of the house susceptible to natural hazard effects and typical cases of building disturbances. The development of finite element method is therefore considered in order to study soil-structure interaction. The analysis of the soil-structure interaction using finite element modeling provides stresses in the masonry. First, simplified analytical and numerical models have been developed for simple structures such as a strip footing, a system of strips foundation or a masonry wall lying on elastic soil (Winkler or Boussinesq). Afterwards, modeling of more complex structures with the whole building elements was made by developing a particular finite element code that allowed the calculation of masonry buildings on a Pasternak soil. To develop a damage justification as well as the reinforcement and design building methods suitable for risk of “ground movements”, this work focuses on the stresses distribution obtained by numerical models and analyzes the validity domain of the approach proposed by Eurocodes EC6 and EC8 for confined masonry or reinforced masonry. By coupling the developed finite element models with the Monte-Carlo method, the probabilistic analysis of risk allows to study the vulnerability of dwelling houses having representative structural characteristics of existing buildings, erected in areas that are the most affected by ground movements. The results of this analysis have been unified into a global methodology for assessing the vulnerability of structures. This methodology is used, in one hand, for the development of GIS mapping of risks and, in other hand, for the reinforcement processes

My research topic is the social impact of urban transformation plans. In this doctoral dissertation I focused it on a neighborhood movement from a Quarter of Barcelona, which is considered paradigmatic in planned urban transformations, to the extent that it speaks of the "Barcelona Model". I wanted to study the subject of research in a neighborhood movement to focus it from the active and organized citizen response in resistance against the urban plans that are being implemented, and, above all, against this model of city driven by local government and capitalist powers, considered by the neighbors organized as more harmful than beneficial for the local population involved. The research was aimed to address anthropologically the construction of the resistance movement of Barceloneta's residents, created to cope with urban plans implemented in the neighborhood by the City Hall. This subject is part of the process of planned urban transformation that is taking place now in this neighborhood and in Barcelona City. As specific objectives, on one hand it was to inquire on the strategies that are taking place in the neighborhood against the urban plans designed by the City Council, especially those generated from the neighborhood movement constituted by the AssociaciO de Veins I Veines de l'Ostia (L'Ostia Neighbors Association) and the Plataforma de Afectados en Defensa de la Barceloneta (Platform of Affected in Defense of the Barceloneta). Different elements of the process of opposition or resistance have been investigated in this direction, such as problems-and possible solutions- identified by the organized neighbors, their actions and forms of organization. On the other hand, the research aims to have an analytical approach on social dynamics resulting from this process of transformation and resistance: the relationships that appear disappear or are transformed. Specific issues arise from the central question about the social impact of urban planning: - How a neighborhood movement against urban plans is organized? - Through which claims, discourses, strategies, types of internal organization and alliances? - Which are the movement concerns and its fronts of struggle? - In what way this style and format of neighborhood struggle can and should be compared with other phases of capitalist appropriation of the city?

CAPES
The lack of maintenance, the change in loadings, project and execution failures, and even failures of constituent materials of a structural part lead to the necessity of applying a structural reinforcement. Among these methods highlights the structural reinforcement with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). This research has the objective to examine whether there is a good relationship between laboratory tests and a simulation model of reinforced concrete beams strengthened in bending with CFRP, in addition to analyze the influence of anchorage increments application in the structural behavior. The computacional model was developed in the comercial software ANSYS, by the utilization of the Finite Element Modeling for the structural analysis. The resistance gain with the implementation of one and two layers of CFRP was evaluated compared with the reference beam. The concrete – reinforce interface was considered in the computacional simulation, since the active efforts in this area are the reason of this type of structure failure. Thus, the Cohesive Zone Model was used for the interface representation. In relation to the experimental tests, beyond the number of layers variation, it was also evaluated the influence of anchorage increments application in the structural behavior. As results, it was obtained a good accuracy of the computacional models and the experimental tests in relation to the rupture load, in addition to the displacements values for the reinforced beams. However, the strain values achieved by the computacional model were higher than the experimental analysis rate values. Besides, it was also noticed that the beams had an increase of the stiffness with the addition of the reinforced layers. Furthermore, it was verified that the anchorage increments application caused an increase of the resistance, even more efficient than the addition of layers, for this case of study.

Annotation:
This thesis examines the relationship between the three artists' workshops Røde Mor (Red Mother), Folkets Ateljé (The People's Studio) and GRAS, who worked between 1968 and 1975 in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Røde Mor was from the outset an articulated Communist graphic workshop loosely organised around collective exhibitions. It developed into a highly productive and professionalised group of artists that made posters by commission for political and social movements. Its artists developed a familiar and popular artistic language characterised by imaginative realism and socialist imagery. Folkets Ateljé, which has never been studied before, was a close knit underground group which created quick and immediate responses to concurrent political issues. This group was founded on the example of Atelier Populaire in France and is strongly related to its practices. Within this comparative study it is the group that comes closest to collective practises around 1968 outside Scandinavia, namely the democratic assembly. The silkscreen workshop GRAS stemmed from the idea of economic and artistic freedom, although socially motivated and politically involved, the group never implemented any doctrine for participation. The aim of this transnational study is to reveal common denominators to the three groups' poster art as it was produced in connection with a Scandinavian experience of 1968. By ‘1968' it is meant the period from the late 1960s till the end of the 1970s. It examines the socio-political conditions under which the groups flourished and shows how these groups operated in conjunction with the political environment of 1968. The thesis explores the relationship between political movements and the collective art making process as it appeared in Scandinavia. To present a comprehensible picture of the impact of 1968 on these groups, their artworks, manifestos, and activities outside of the collective space have been discussed. The argument has presented itself that even though these groups had very similar ideological stances, their posters and techniques differ. This has impacted the artists involved to different degrees, yet made it possible to express the same political goals. It is suggested to be linked with the Scandinavian social democracies and common experience of the radicalisation that took place mostly in the aftermath of 1968 proper. By comparing these three groups' it has been uncovered that even with the same socio-political circumstances and ideological stance divergent styles did develop to embrace these issue.

The central goal of this thesis is to direct attention to the underappreciated role that radical media has played in communicating social movement messages, which challenge dominant discourses and politicize youth culture, by helping advance master protest frames, reframe collective identities and promote movement-specific collective action frames. To demonstrate the relationship between radical media and movements, this thesis identifies a gap in social movement research regarding how movements communicate reframed meaning to participants. Furthermore, to address this lacuna, it proceeds to assess the movement-oriented content and discursive master, collective identity and collective action frames found in Vancouver’s ‘underground’ newspaper, the Georgia Straight, between 1967 and 1969. The research into these frames supports the argument that Georgia Straight in this period did act as a form of radical media, reflecting and reinforcing the broader social movement of youth radicalism in existence at the time.

5 Abstract Diploma thesis deals with the topic of the Belarusian national movement in the late Soviet period. After the end of the Stalinist terror in the 70th-80th of the 20th century civic movements have been reborn in the Soviet Belarus. A rising national movement continued the national- building process, started in 20th years with the program of Belorusisation, which was interuppted by Soviet government in the late 20th. The research subject of the thesis is the Belarusian national idea in samizdat periodicals during 1970-1985. Content analysis of samizdat journals allows to define and understand the period's thinking. Since Soviet samizdat at that time was the only media environment, independent from the ideology and censorship. The thesis as well includes analysis and development of Belarusian national idea from its beginning; characteristic of the political, economic and social context of the Soviet period; appearance and analysis of dissent and democratic activities in 1970-1985.

This qualitative study uses narrative inquiry (Connelly & Clandinin, 1988, 1990, 2001) and self-study to investigate ways to further understand and facilitate the integration of holistic philosophies of education with media literacy pedagogies. As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.
