This study aims to investigate performances and strategies of EFL graduate students in terms of language proficiency, language background and type of writing task. The participants were 12 graduate students pursuing their doctoral studies in ELT at a Turkish university. A chosen text was used for data collection and the students’ paraphrased texts were analyzed employing Keck’s (2006) the taxonomy of paraphrase types and ‘a paraphrase found form’ developed by the researcher in terms of lexical and structural changes. The results of the study revealed that graduate students had challenges in appropriate implementation of paraphrasing in their task. While they generated frequently moderate level of paraphrases, the strategies they often used were synonym substitution as well as copying strings of words from source. Additionally, deviated meaning was designated as a new paraphrase type in the taxonomy of paraphrase. These findings suggest that students need an explicit paraphrasing instruction supported by good and bad paraphrase examples and more practice to learn how to paraphrase appropriately.

This article discusses the phenomenon of renaming events and individuals by describing their characteristics, not by their names. It has also been suggested that people have nicknames that refer to their strengths and weaknesses. Paraphrases are then used to describe speech as a means of stylistics. Paraphrases are said to be renaming by describing objects, events, and types, and their types are listed according to their structure. Paraphrases have been noted to serve not only to enrich charm, imagery, and speech, but also to reinforce its content. The lexical unit of the nickname, in turn, has four different meanings. At the same time, Rashod Nuri Guntekin connects the whole system of events in the novel “Cholikushi” with certain paraphrases and divides them into three parts: “Farida – Cholikushi”, “Farida – Silkworm”, “Farida – Gulbashakar”. It is said that the events of the work are developed by the author around these paraphrases, and the author creates original tools. It is emphasized that each paraphrase and nickname in the work is a unique invention of the author, which is skillfully used in the novel as a methodological tool. It is noted that Rashod Nuri Guntekin’s novel “Cholikushi” effectively used paraphrases and nicknames. The author is in his work “Çalıkuşu”( Cholikushi), “İpekböceği”(Silkworm), “Gülbeşeker”(Gulbashakar), “Evliya parmaklığı”(Saint’s paw), “Küçük”(Small) paraphrases, “Sakallı Amca”(Bearded Uncle), “Gourde”(Gourd), “San çıyanı”(Yellow scorpion), “Ayı Dayı”( Bear wrestler), “Sarı zalim”(yellow cruel), “Sarı mahluk”(yellow monster), “Düldül”(Duldul), “Odabaşı”(Captain), “Sevgili ayıcıklarım”(dear bears) emphasis was placed on the skillful use of nicknames in their place, and analyzed through examples. In the conclusion, the main part of the nicknames are Turkish words, some of which are Persian (gül, dayı) and Arabic (zalim, mahluk) words, only one nickname is French (gourde) which was used to convey the spirit of the time.

The proposed study focuses on identifying the processes of cooperation of cultural aspects on the border “West-East” and strategies of literary translation in the Turkish-speaking space. The use of methods of comparative and translational analysis of texts has effectively influenced the identification of vivid examples of the use of Turkish translators’ techniques of domestication and foreignization. The article presents factual material from the works of famous Western artists (W. Shakespeare, Moliere, D. Swift) in comparison with Turkish translations and interpretations, and for the first time presents a detailed analysis of excerpts from P. Zahrebelnyi’s novel “Roksolanа” in comparison with Turkish translation. As a result of the study, the fact of the advantage of domestication over foreignization and its causes was established, namely the desire of the Turks to maximize the preservation of national values and protect them from external influences. Turkish translators resort mainly to such methods of translation as omission, lexical substitution, substitution of realities, abbreviations, paraphrases, thus “domesticating” the foreign context. However, in some cases, when it is not a question of possible “encroachment” on national values, Turkish translators fully adhere to the translation rules and techniques. The originality of the revealed results lies first of all in the fact that there is clear evidence of systematic (from the second half of the XIX – to the beginning of the XXI century) partial resistance of the Turkish nation to cultural globalization in the religious and social spheres. This has been and continues to be the case in the Republic of Turkey through “protective modernization”, which allows it to keep pace with Western trends without fundamental changes in the traditional cultural space.

The Memoirs of George Sphrantzes are preserved in two versions. One of them is the authentic text by Sphrantzes, Chronicon Minus, a memoir of a pronounced chronographic nature, describing the events between 1413 and 1477 which the author recorded as an active participant and a contemporary. The other version is Chronicon Maius, also called Pseudo-Sphrantzes, a compilation composed between 1573 and 1575 by a famous forger, the Metropolitan of Monembasia Macarius Melissenus. Being a collage from different sources, his work contains some data on the Serbian lands which exceed the chronological limits of Chronicon Minus, i.e. of the data given by Sphrantzes himself. The structure of this chronicle ? parallel stories on Byzantine emperors and Turkish rulers ? resembles the so-called Venetian-Byzantine short chronicle Nr. 50B, written between 1474 and 1574. Chronicon Maius gives the year 6865 (=1356/7) as the year of the conquest of Gallipoli by Murat I. The same date is given in five out of seven manuscripts of the short chronicle Nr. 53. Finally, Ecthesis Chronica, a work by an anonymous author of the 16th century, is, apart from Macarius Melissenus, the only source written in Greek that explicitly mentions the name of the daughter of the Despot Djuradj Brankovic, Mara, who was sent to the harem of the Sultan Murat II in 1435. Many of the reports on the Serbian lands given by Melissenus are in actual fact short and imprecise paraphrases of the data given by Laonicus Chalcocondyles in his historical work. In the first place this holds true for the reports on the meeting in Serres, the reign of Beyazid I, the civil war among Beyazid's sons and the reign of Murat II. Finally, Chronicon Maius partly overlaps with the data from Chronicle of the Turkish Sultans, an anonymous work composed in the first quarter of the 17th century. E. A. Zachariadou has proven the dependence of this source from the text of the second edition of Francesco Sansovino's Gl' Annali Turcheschi published in Venice in 1573. These three sources, Pseudo-Sphrantzes Chronicle of the Turkish Sultans and Annals of Francesco Sansovino, are clearly interdependent. Chronicle of the Turkish Sultans doubtlessly draws from Sansovino's annals, whereas the precise relationship between Pseudo-Sphrantzes and Sansovino is still to be explored. .

AbstractThis study examines how Devletoğlu Yūsuf Balıḳesrī’s versified Hanafi law manual, written in Anatolian Turkish and dedicated to the Ottoman sultan Murad II (d. 855/1451), engages in a complex relationship between the nascent vernacular, Anatolian Turkish, and the Classical Arabic religious textual tradition. Devletoğlu Yūsuf's work, Manẓūm fıḳıh, is a Turkish paraphrase of the Wiqāya, a popular abridgement of the major Hanafi law handbook, the Hidāya, in the form of a mathnawī (verse work of rhymed couplets). Several passages from the “Book on the Affairs of the Qadi” in Devletoğlu Yūsuf's work are analysed in order to gain insight into how the work functions as a normative text in the Classical Hanafi tradition set within a localized context. Furthermore, this study explores how the work expounds upon the benefits of transmitting religious knowledge in the vernacular and justifies the use of Turkish for religious texts by drawing on Hanafi-approved Persian language practices of religious devotion. Of particular interest is how Devletoğlu Yūsuf grounds his argumentation on the rhetorical theories of the Classical Arabic grammarian, ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī.

European and Turkish translations and reception of works by Juda Tadeusz Krusiński SI regarding the Afghan-Persian war and the fall of the Safavid dynasty This article discusses the process of developing, editing and translating a Latin text written by the Polish Jesuit J.T. Krusiński dedicated to the reasons behind the fall of the Safavid dynasty and to the course of the Afghan-Persian War. The first manuscript was titled by the author as Historia revolutionis persicae. The Latin text, which was prepared in Rome, was then sent to Paris where it wasnot only translated into French, but also significantly modified and shortened by A. du Cerceau. The French paraphrase, published in 1728, became the basis for the English and Italian editions. Another version of Krusiński’s work was prepared and published in German by J. Stöcklein. He used not only the French edition, but also the Latin original of Krusiński’s text, which he had received from Vienna, as well as other sources. For the needs of the Ottoman court, Krusiński reviewed the Latin version, which was then translated and published in Turkish in 1729. This last edition caused a sharp dispute over the authorship of the Turkish translation between Krusiński and Ibrahim Mütaferrika, head of the Istanbul printing house. The Turkish edition of Father Juda Tadeusz Krusiński’s work complicated its reception in Europe even more, especially after the Turkish version had been retranslated into Latin by J.Ch. Clodius. The manuscripts stored in the Vienna library make it possible to trace the stages of developement of Krusiński’s work, which culminated in the publication of the book Tragica vertentis … (Lviv, 1740), his most comprehensive study of the Persian revolution.

Annotation:
Film translation has become a worldwide field in which subtitlers translate and transfer language and style from one culture into another. Subtitling has always been affected by cultural elements. The purpose of this study was to find out how professional subtitlers differ from fansubbers when dealing with such expressions concerning the strategies that both groups use to subtitle these expressions. To achieve the goals of this study, the researchers identified 120 slang expressions from two American movies, Goodfellas and Training Day, but chose only 30 slang expressions to report on how they were rendered by both groups. Results of the study showed that the professional subtitler and the fansubbers faced many challenges and used varying strategies when subtitling slang expressions. The challenges were related to the presence of some cultural terms and different types of slangs which are unfamiliar to most subtitlers. The most frequent strategies used by the professional subtitler and fansubbers were paraphrase, euphemism, omission, and calque. The study recommends that further studies be conducted on a larger sample of slang expressions in American or British movies and TV series. In addition, the subtitling of these slang expressions can be investigated in other target cultures and languages such as Spanish, Persian, Turkish, Greek, and Kurdish.

The smallest unit of a verb is its stem and it is this stem that is most frequently used as the imperative. There are other means as well, all based on a stem plus a suffix: a polite request is issued in two ways, depending on whether one or more persons are being addressed. A third form is the compelling request, being applied as encouragement or to convey a certain degree of impatience. A paraphrased request is formed by using, for instance, an affirmative of negated present-tense form or by a verb form expressing possibility. Instructions can also be given in a declarative form expressing present or future. A certain ‘imperative’ effect can of course also be achieved by using modal forms corresponding to ‘can’ and ‘may’.
