Evaluation of Samuel Chandler Earle's 1911 presentation to the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education demonstrates Earle's role as a key player in the shift of a technical writing course which combined both the goals of an engineering curriculum with the ultimate, real-world needs of the graduated engineer. Earle's Tufts Experiment, discussed in his paper, “English in the Engineering School at Tufts College” [1], would not only provide the impetus for a decade of discussion among engineering and English educators, but would provide, in part, the impetus for the Committee on English, a committee Earle would chair, charged with studying engineering English offerings in the United States.

Abstract During the past six decades, there has been an ever-growing awareness of the global ecological crisis threatening human survival. Concern for the future of human life has led to the necessity of upholding environmental rights and sustainable development. As in the case of other human rights, obligations of the state that derive from these need to be complemented by civic engagements, and sustained by shared values in the societal sphere. The question that we raise is if religions can play a significant role in favouring environmental rights, civil engagements and environmental care, given that in varied ways religious traditions appeal to the interdependence of divine-human-cosmic realities. The empirical research that we undertook in the multi-religious context of Tamil Nadu, India, seeks to verify if the religious identity of the senior secondary school students and college students has some influence on their attitude towards environmental obligations, engagements and care. The results show that senior school students are highly sensitive to state’s obligations and civil engagements, but their religious affiliation does not seem to influence it. Instead, college students manifest strong agreement to environmental care, with Hindus displaying higher sensitivity. Besides, variables such as transformative function of religion, religious pluralism, human dignity, and empathy have favourable association with environmental care for Christians, Muslims and Hindus. We conclude with a discussion on the implications of the predictors for eco-education.

Aims: This paper aims to understand the relevance of EsP classes, given that its roots stem from religion, and the current climate of the Philippine public school education system. Study Design: Quantitative Research. Place and Duration of Study: De La Salle University – Manila, social media (I.e., Facebook and Facebook Messenger) between, between March 2024 – May 2024. Methodology: The author administrated surveys to seventy-six (76) non-secular school graduates and asked them about their experiences during religion class, and their perspectives towards EsP. Results: The major findings of the paper show that religion does have a slight hand in their perspectives towards EsP. From the gathered responses, the research shows that while learning values and morals are still important in society, the basis should be rooted on social morality rather than religion. Conclusion: Participants believed that the basis of the subject’s curriculum must be aligned with the social morality of the Filipino people, or the general common good. To them, the idea of “God” or being “Maka-Diyos” in the subject’s objectives is quite aligned with the religious views. This could potentially divide or discriminate public school students who do not identify with the country’s major religion. To them, Edukasyon ng Pagpapakatao (EsP) should focus solely on values education and ethics.

This article offers a case study of how regional, gender, and religious ideals collided at one Tennessee women’s college during the antebellum and Civil War eras. Mary Sharp College, founded by Baptists in 185, strongly advocated for women’s education that equaled the contemporary men’s institutions. Local factors relating to religion and education contributed to the creation of Mary Sharp College. Tennessee Baptists founded the college as a replacement for more informal education of women and made the school the first women’s college in the U.S. to require Latin and Greek. Two key early figures tied to college, the Vermont-born Graves brothers. James Robinson Graves, a Baptist pastor and editor of The Tennessee Baptist, provided advertising for the college; Zuinglius Calvin Graves, a Baptist educator, gave it direction. J. R. and Z. C. Graves combined southern identity, gender ideology, and Baptist piety to produce a unique form of higher education for women. Although the Graves brothers saw the home and family as the proper place for southern white women, they still believed in the necessity of a rigorous education. Mary Sharp built up faith and southern character in women and prepared them for their chief service to society: motherhood. When the Civil War came, despite their own northern connections and divided loyalties in Tennessee, the Graves brothers and their college fully supported the Confederacy. Despite the college’s supposedly secure location, an occupation by the Union army led the school to close in 1863 and remain closed until 1866, when it reopened as a much weaker school but as one firmly committed both to educated female piety and to the “Lost Cause.”

There is a need for high school, college, and university educators to introduce their students to a history of mankinds development of religions and beliefs in God. Regarded as too sensitive a subject, students are deprived of learning how mankind has evolved ways to establish moral and righteous behavior to maintain harmony among competing groups within a growing community. Based upon facts and findings surfaced by such respected Egyptologists as James H. Breasted and E.A. Wallis Budge, this author conclusively reveals how the first formal religion of Egypt has been emulated by the Judaic, Christian, and Islamic religions. Historical findings provide meaningful evidence of the spiritual nature of man, the emergence of one God Amen, the development of the concepts of truth, a soul, hereafter, Son of God, and a universal God. These findings afford greater insights in the fields of theology, humanities, psychology, and sociology studies. More importantly, a greater understanding of the nature of man can energize religious leaders and the public to effect possible solutions with the assistance of those with perceptive minds and love of humanity.

During World War II the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada put forth arguments on behalf of bible college students concerning military service exemptions, chaplaincy appointments, and veterans’ benefits. The paper deals specifically with the Rev. J.E. Purdie, Principal of the Western Bible College in Winnipeg, his efforts on behalf of his students, and one particularly complex case where attempts were made to have the student exempted from serving, and failing that, to have him appointed as a military chaplain. After the young man’s premature release from service, Purdie argued that he should be entitled to veteran’s benefits to pay for his bible college training. What initially appeared as a bid to protect the individual rights of one young conscript was in fact part of a much larger effort as Pentecostals asserted their right (and by extension the right of other marginal religious groups) to be included in the broader liberal framework in Canada. This case study is significant because it addresses themes of public religion, specifically how Pentecostals challenged the ‘liberal order framework,’ by attempting to carve out recognition for themselves among the religious groups that were acknowledged as legitimate players in Canada’s public affairs.

The categories of conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration have been used to organize the wealth of opinion on the relationship of science and religion (Barbour, 1997). This approach is especially useful in college or high school science courses, or special seminars, because it allows the instructor to locate his or her own opinion, and challenge students to determine their own beliefs. This effectively lays most opinions “on the table” for display in a free market of ideas. Using this approach, students can examine the strengths and shortcomings of major opinions, and it has the advantage of preserving the dignity of all religious views that reside in the science classroom, without compromising any science. The wealth and depth of new ideas that have been forthcoming from both science and theology offer the exciting promise of future wisdom that can serve both religion and science.

Although graffiti has become a significant cultural and linguistic phenomenon and has been studied throughout history, there is still room for the exploration of how graffiti in different contexts, particularly in a higher education institution, serves to voice the anonymous student writers’ thoughts and feelings. Thus, this study examines the common themes and the lexical and syntactic features of college students’ graffiti writings on the walls of a state college in Zamboanga del Sur, Mindanao, Philippines. Employing thematic analysis, this study reveals that students’ graffiti writings contain a variety of themes such as love, discrimination, self and group identities, hatred, sex, faith and religion, management, education, and fanaticism, with love and discrimination as the most prevailing social themes. Students’ graffiti writings also exemplify distinct lexical features such as loan and swear words, taboo words/expressions, abbreviations, ironies, acronyms, repetitions, and compound words. Borrowings and using offensive or swear words are the most common lexical features found among these graffiti writings. In addition, students often use brief or terse statements to clearly express their thoughts and feelings to the public. Indeed, graffiti writings are a distinctive and silent way of communication, particularly for students who are in the marginalised section of any society.

To advance understandings of how religion manifests in subtle, nuanced ways in secular institutions, we examine student religiosity and spirituality at an elite liberal arts school marked by a strong intellectual collective identity. Using mixed research methods, we examine how the college’s structures and dominant culture influence students’ religiosity and spirituality. Despite an institutional commitment to promoting students’ self-exploration and inclusion of social “diversity,” we found both campus structures and mainstream culture deterred open spiritual and religious exploration and identification. The structure of the college and its dominant secular, intellectual culture reinforced: (1) a widespread stigma against religious and spiritual expression, (2) a lack of dialogue about the sacred, (3) discreetness in exploring and adhering to sacred beliefs and practices, and (4) a large degree of religious and spiritual pluralism. Our findings additionally illustrate that early exposure to the campus culture’s critical regard for religion had a long-lasting impact on students’ religiosity. A majority of students kept their religious and spiritual expressions hidden and private; only a marginalized minority of students embraced their expressions publically. To increase students’ comfort with religious and spiritual exploration, we propose that colleges foster intentional peer dialogues early in the college experience. Furthermore, we recommend that campus communities prioritize religious and spiritual literacy and respect.

According to WHO, one of the most effective ways to protect people against COVID-19 is with the use of vaccines. As academic institutions prepare to fully re-open in the fall of 2021 and COVID-19 vaccines being readily accessible to all ages twelve and older in the U.S., college students are also getting ready to go back to normal campus operations for traditional in-person education. This raises the need to assess students’ attitudes toward the COVID-19 vaccines by identifying and addressing reasons for their hesitancy. One major threat to the impact of vaccination in preventing disease and deaths from COVID-19 is low utilization of vaccines by some groups. We conducted a pilot study and interviewed 55 undergraduate science students enrolled in summer school in 2021. The majority of the students were female, younger, Hispanic, or Latino, and at the junior or senior level. More than half of them have been vaccinated (62%) and indicated that it is important to attend classes while vaccinated (75%). While there were a variety of reasons for hesitancy ranging from lack of concern to lack of initiative, 17% of participants stated that religion played a role in their decision. Background: Stress can raise the blood pressure of a subject and a number of environmental factors can change that level of the stress, especially the examination stress. These factors which include gender and religion are referred to as modifiers of stress. Objective: This study was therefore designed, using data of blood pressure, to understand the influence of religion and gender on the effect of examination stress on blood pressure of the secondary school students in South Western (SW) Nigeria. Methodology: The population of the study comprises all the students of Oroke Grammar School, Akungba Akoko (650) out of which a sample of 351 that satisfied our criteria was selected, using purposive sampling technique. Digital sphygmomanometer was used to measure the actual blood pressure readings of the respondents twice on each occasion and with at least thirty minutes interval in sitting positions. The measurements were carried out three times during the study, two weeks after resumption for the second term of the 2017/2018 academic year, two weeks before the second term examination and two weeks after resumption for the third term. Results: In this work, a rule of thumb was used to connect the perceived stress (PS) and the % change in the systolic blood pressure (SBP) when a subject is stressed, as PS=100/(% change in SBP). The results show that the group of female students in the general population always feels more stressed than their male counterpart, and respectively in the Islam religion and in the Christian religion always feels more stressed than their respective male counterparts. Also the groups of male and the female students in the Islam religion always feel more stressed than their groups of male and female students in the Christian religion Conclusion: Gender and religion were found to affect the level of perceived stress of the students. It was recommended that male students should be encouraged to go for regular blood pressure checkups as they are more likely not to feel stressed even when their blood pressure has increased much above the normal. This is one of the measurements the health personnel should do whenever a male student in particular is in the health centre. Because the number of Christian students in this work is much larger than the number of Muslim students, more research is needed with comparable number of students in each religious group to further understand how religious practices play a role in perceived stress of college students. Future research should include more variables that influence coping methods and parental influence and guidance.

This study considers the role of religious habitus and self-concept in educational stratification. We follow 3,238 adolescents for 13 years by linking the National Study of Youth and Religion to the National Student Clearinghouse. Survey data reveal that girls with a Jewish upbringing have two distinct postsecondary patterns compared to girls with a non-Jewish upbringing, even after controlling for social origins: (1) they are 23 percentage points more likely to graduate college, and (2) they graduate from much more selective colleges. We then analyze 107 interviews with 33 girls from comparable social origins interviewed repeatedly between adolescence and emerging adulthood. Girls raised by Jewish parents articulate a self-concept marked by ambitious career goals and an eagerness to have new experiences. For these girls, elite higher education and graduate school are central to attaining self-concept congruence. In contrast, girls raised by non-Jewish parents tend to prioritize motherhood and have humbler employment aims. For them, graduating from college, regardless of its prestige, is sufficient for self-concept congruence. We conclude that religious subculture is a key factor in educational stratification, and divergent paths to self-concept congruence can help explain why educational outcomes vary by religion in gendered ways.

Religious education is a compulsory subject in Pakistani schools in which students learn basic knowledge about Islam without exploring the sectarian differences between each sect of Islam. The division of Muslims into Sunni and Shia and the further division of Sunni Muslims into different sects has caused massive sectarian violence in Pakistan. This study uses qualitative methods to explore the possibility of engaging with religious literacy and religious education to explain the purpose, contents, and practical application of religious education and to mitigate existing challenges linked to religion in Pakistan. Even though religious education does not support sectarian differences, individual opinions about sectarian differences are still a major component of divisiveness in Pakistani society. Through interviews with 25 teachers from different levels of education (six primary school teachers, five high school teachers, five college teachers, five university teachers, and four religious school teachers), in this article, I argue that teachers of religious education in schools are neither following a common faith in teaching religious education nor are they in full agreement on providing equal rights to all students of different religious beliefs. Rather, most believe in their personal ideology centered on their own particular religious sect that largely rejects the concept of religious literacy. There is a need for evaluation and improvement of the teaching and learning of religion in schools in order to explain misperceptions about its practical application as well as to engage religious education with diversity.

Most of the respondents' mothers (75.9%) were housewives, whereas most of the fathers (60.7%) were service holders. Among the respondents, 17.7% and 13.9% were overweight and obese, respectively. There was no significant relationship between body mass index and socio-demographic factors like gender, religion, educational qualification and occupation of the parents, family income, and family type. Most of the overweight (89.3%) and obese (95.5%) respondents performed physical exercise regularly, which was statistically significant (p= 0.01). Other lifestyle factors such as sports participation, food preferences, television viewing, and computer use were not found to be significantly linked to being overweight or obese. Conclusion: In our study, adolescents had a greater prevalence of overweight and obesity. Public health programs are required to increase knowledge of the risk factors for overweight and obesity among children and adolescents in order to lessen the future burden of obesity-related chronic diseases.

The variety of religious problems that arise becomes the reason for pesantren to take part in maintaining religious harmony. Philosophy, Islamic theology and tasawuf become knowledge that is able to shape the character of human personality. If Islamic boarding school play a role in developing an education oriented towards maintaining harmony then pesantren is an oasis for the aridity of wisdom in thinking and acting, refusing reasoning for an understanding of God without limits, and the lack of attitude or moral in social life. In line with this, then this paper describes the educational curriculum of the Islamic Boarding School Baitul Hikmah STF (College of Philosophy) Al-Farabi Kepanjen-Malang, to realize religious harmony.

Evolution deniers do not need to establish their own scientific position but merely cast doubt on some aspect of evolution or obtain a small amount of legitimacy for creationism or intelligent design to sow sufficient doubt in the mainstream. This doubt is one of three pillars, along with demands for equal time and the incompatibility of science and religion, that Eugenie Scott has argued define contemporary anti-evolution efforts. High school biology teachers play a crucial role in whether a high school biology course reinforces the scientific consensus or whether it confers legitimacy on creationist perspectives with pedagogical strategies consistent with the three pillars. As we have shown elsewhere, many public school teachers do contribute to public opinion on evolution. But where do these norms come from? This article begins to answer this question, using data from our 2007 National Survey of High School Biology Teachers and new data from a series of focus groups with preservice teachers. We find that, as early as in the preservice college years, teachers develop attitudes and pedagogical coping mechanisms that lead to support for the anti-evolution movement.

College sports is a multi-billion-dollar business, and universities are looking for ways to remain competitive, including recruiting and retaining athletes from historically underrepresented groups to predominantly white institutions (PWI), many of which have a documented history of excluding non-white students, including blacks, indigenous peoples, and other people of color (often referred to as BIPOC). This article will examine the legacy of the racist teachings, past controversies, and compromises of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormons) along with persistent struggles to shake off its 130-year-old racist past in efforts for its flagship school, Brigham Young University, to stay competitive in the lucrative Big 12 Athletic Conference. Deeply ingrained in the LDS culture is a politic of religious conservatism. Politics has often been intertwined with organized religion with much influence, and the LDS faith is no different. The cumulation of these interlocking systems generates thoughts, attitudes, and feelings that foster a racial climate at Brigham Young University where black students have reported feeling unsafe and unsupported. While this is a well-documented problem at predominately white institutions (PWIs) across the country, BYU is in many ways unique, given the discriminatory overt policies and practices employed for generations. We contend that the LDS Church’s history of racial marginalization and exclusion of black people made its way into the sports consciousness of the church’s flagship school and is not likely to change anytime soon. Understanding religion in the tradition of Charles Long as an orientation and utilizing Derrick Bell’s notion of racial realism are critical to our analyses. The confluence of politics, religion, race, and sport cannot be easily untangled.

Only one year after starting the Catholic University of Ireland (1854), John Henry Newman arranged for the purchase of a medical school, the Cecilia-Street Medical School, which gained immediate success and has continued to this day as a part of University College Dublin. This article is a historical piece that examines the importance Newman gave to Catholic doctrine for the formation of medical students. He understood that according to a hierarchy of sciences, theology and religion are above medicine and its practice and that there are some important religious truths that future Catholic physicians need to learn. In this article, we present a brief history of the origins of the medical school, and discuss his choice of only Catholic professors, and his concern for the doctrinal and moral formation of future doctors. Summary: When John Henry Newman established a medical school in Dublin he chose from only Catholic professors to ensure that the students, almost all Catholic, would receive teaching consistent with their faith, and also that they would have as role models Catholic physicians. He understood the harmony between science and faith, and thus sought professors with very good medical knowledge, who at the same time professed the Catholic faith.

The values of religious moderation consist of four points, namely national commitment, tolerance, anti-radicalism, and accommodative to local culture. The direction to internalize the four values of religious moderation is also played by the Anak Jalanan At-Tamur Islamic Boarding School, Bandung. This article aims to reveal the role of the Anak Jalanan At-Tamur Islamic Boarding School in internalizing the values of religious moderation to students. This article uses qualitative research methods that are field research. The research data were obtained from two sources, namely field data sources and library data sources. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentaries. The data analysis techniques used are data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that success in internalizing the values of religious moderation to students could be seen from the indicators or values of religious moderation. The four indicators (values) of religious moderation are reflected in the routine activities and attitudes of students of the Anak Jalanan At-Tamur Islamic Boarding School. Commitment to nationalism, tolerance, anti-radicalism and accommodativeness to local culture is imprinted in the personalities of the students of the Anak Jalanan At-Tamur Islamic Boarding School. This is also due to two things: firstly, interfaith dialogue events are often held and secondly, the leader of the Anak Jalanan At-Tamur Islamic Boarding School who has a broad and open view and emphasizes morality in his education.

Abstract Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Barbie blockbuster provided an infectious reminder that women are capable of the success of their male counterparts, as well as emphasizing the impressiveness of female empowerment and leadership. Luckily, in dermatology, we have had this leadership from the beginning. According to the 2022 UK consensus of consultant physicians, women make up 51% of higher specialty trainees, and there have been more women than men in training since 2013. However, despite this, only 41% of the consultant physician workforce are women while 59% are men (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Focus on Physicians. Census of Consultant Physicians and Higher Specialty Trainees in the UK 2016–17. Edinburgh: Royal College of Physicians, 2017). However, dermatology stands out as a female-predominant area of specialization. In the UK in 2016, 57% of consultants and 75% of higher specialty trainees in dermatology were women [Royal College of Physicians. The UK 2022 census of consultant physicians. Available at: https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/projects/outputs/uk-2022-census-consultant-physicians (last accessed 29 February 2024)]. There is likely a multitude of reasons contributing to this, but the historical influence of prominent female leaders in the specialty cannot be ignored. Presented here are a select group of pioneering female dermatologists whose careers and contributions to the field of dermatology paved the way for the development of one of the few female-dominated medical specialties. Helen Ollendorff-Curth was a female pioneer of genodermatology and is commemorated with four eponyms: the Ollendorff probe sign, the Curth criteria, Buschke–Ollendorff syndrome, and ichthyosis hystrix, Curth–Macklin type (IHCM). Loretta Joy Cummins was the first woman to pass the Dermatology Board examination in the USA and the first to be president of the New England Dermatological Society. Cummins founded a fund for Massachusetts General Hospital and a scholarship fund for women at Tufts Medical School. Agnes Blackadder was the first female consultant dermatologist in the UK, when she was appointed consultant dermatologist at St John’s Hospital, London in 1907. Daisy Maude Orleman Robinson’s achievements include becoming the first female dermatologist in the USA in 1905, as well as being the first female dermatologist to present a case at a dermatological meeting, to publish a scholarly paper in dermatology, and to present a case at an international dermatology meeting. These influential women were catalysts for creating and cultivating a specialty that promotes female leadership in the world of dermatology, medicine and science.

The process of reorganization of this institution, for which the college of professors prepared a project based on the organization of training of Austrian technical institutions, was approved by the Ministry of Education and Religion and provided for a thorough study of theoretical and practical disciplines, and running the academy was compared to other technical academies of the monarchy. Accordingly, the main provisions of the educational procesus that were approved by the Galician Regional Council and the Austro-Hungarian Ministry of Education were approved. As the reaction of the Austrian and Polish authorities to the development of a higher technical school was largely positive, there was no such conflict situation as was observed at the University of Lviv, as it was about the establishment of the Ukrainian university and the policy of the Viennese government on the educational issue. The reaction of the Polish ruling circles towards the development of higher technical education was also calm, since the teaching languages in this institution were German and Polish, and the Poles predominated in nationality.

Indian modern art is considered to have started from the mid-19th century. When the English ruler decided to set up art colleges in Madras, Calcutta, Mumbai, Lahore and Lucknow to train Indian artists in European art. These art colleges hired English artists who painted using natural English method. During this time, Japanese artists Hidisa and Taikan came to Calcutta who trained the Wash system first in India to Avindranath Thakur and this is how the Wash system was born in India. When it comes to the Indian wash system, first comes the atmosphere of the Bengal School, by which trained artists were established in all the important art centers of the country and an atmosphere of wash painting was created all over the country. In such a situation, after the Bengal School, Lucknow has emerged as the second center for wash depictions. Here, another developed form of wash came out, where opaque or opaque colors were used in Bengal, whereas in Lucknow it was avoided. The technique of wash painting was originally introduced by Avindnath Thakur in Calcutta. Some of his subjects were appointed in Lucknow Arts and Crafts College, thus the technique was further developed in Lucknow and later all these artists worked in this medium and developed it in which Arpit Kumar Haldar, Abdul Rahman Chughtai, LM Sen and Badrinath Artists like Arya kept experimenting with watercolor in the wash method.

Objective. The influence of religion, acculturation, and incarceration on substance abuse has been studied, though predominantly among adolescents. Little research exists on how such factors influence substance use among Hispanic adults. The objective of this study was to assess key determinants of substance use among Hispanic adults.Methods. Public access 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health was utilized. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted while accounting for complex survey design to obtain population-weighted estimates. Receiver operator curve analysis was used to evaluate the relative contribution of each variable.Results. Importance of religious influence in life and Spanish language interview were associated with lower odds of substance use, while history of incarceration increased the likelihood of substance use among Hispanic adults. Other factors associated with lower odds were increasing age, being female, and currently married. Other factors associated with increased odds were high school graduate and some college in addition to living above the 200% federal poverty level.Discussion. Results from this study add to the limited body of the literature on determinants of substance use among Hispanic adults. Health education measures should target acculturated Hispanic adults and those with incarceration history to reduce substance use.

In its document Educating to Intercultural Dialogue in Catholic Schools: Living in Harmony for a Civilization of Love, the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education specifies that “all children and young people must have the same possibilities for arriving at the knowledge of their religion as well as of elements that characterize other religions.” As such, interreligious dialogue is an essential component of Catholic education, thereby necessitating interreligious dialogue education and formation starting from the beginning of school age in academic institutions. From this perspective, the study explores a selection of Catholic Church teachings and Magisterial documents on interreligious dialogue. Using See-Judge-Act as the framework, it aims to outline the essential elements of the theology of interreligious dialogue in education. Sunday TV Mass (STVM) is one of the Catholic Churchs initiatives for evangelization via media. Primarily produced to spread the Good News, it is specifically for the sick and physically incapable since they cannot go to churches to attend Mass and fulfill their Sunday obligation. However, since the broadcast Mass is communicated through a mass medium and is exposed to a wider audience than necessarily targeted, some people, the adolescents (youth) in particular, make STVM an excuse to forego Mass attendance in their respective churches. This experimental study will focus on STVM on its role as evangelizer and catalyst to ritual formation. James Careys theory of Ritual Communication describes this practice as an enabler to the creation of a community of believers among the youth and George Gerbners Cultivation Theory on how television creates a worldview that unravels ritualistic experience by watching STVM. The respondents of the study are 40 high school students of Angelicum College. Selected purposively, the students were instructed and monitored to watch STVM for four Sundays. These students are top achievers in their Religion subjects and are exposed to different religious activities in their school.

Following the spectacular disintegration of the Soviet Union, popularand academic interest in nationalism and religion gathered momentum. Inaddition to recent ethnic clashes and religious conflicts in many parts of theworld, particularly the Balkans, Central Asia, the Middle East, and manyAfrican states, questions have been raised about the relation betweennationalism and religion. What, if any, is the relationship between nationalismand religion? To what extent can religion influence the emergenceand maintenance of nationalism? Can religious beliefs and sentiments legitimizea nationalist ideology? What is meant by “religious nationalism,” andhow is it related to nation-states, resistance, and violence? These questionswere addressed during a one-day conference held at the London School ofEconomics, University of London on 22 March 1996. The well-attendedconference was organized by the Association for the Study of Ethnicity andNationalism, which was established in 1990 and has published the journalNations and Nationalism since March 1995.The first paper at the Nationalism and Religion conference was presentedby Bruce Kapferer (University College of London, London, UK).In his paper “Religious and Historical Metaphors in the Context ofNationalist Violence,” he addressed political action, the force of ideologies, and the relevance of mythological schemes to religious and ritual practiceby means of a case study of Sinhalese Buddhists in Sri Lanka and theevents of 1989-90. In his own words, his focus was “the dynamics ofremythologization, or the process . . . whereby current political and economicforces are totalized within mythological schemes constructed in historicalperiods relatively independent of the circumstances of contemporarynationalism” and “the force of such ideological remythologizations, that is,how such remythologizations can became a passionate dimension of politicalactivity and give it direction.”According to Kapferer, the relation of mythologization to routine religiousbeliefs and ritual practice is significant. In his paper, he argued that“nationalism is the creation of modernism and it is of a continuous dynamicnature whose power is embedded in and sanctified by the culture that hasoriginated in the rituals of religion which provide a cosmology for nationalism.Cosmology of religion as diverse as nationalism itself that is far fromuniversal claims but exists in diversity.” Kapferer’s theorization is based onhis research in Sri Lanka where, he thinks, continuing conflict is related tonationalism based on cosmologies. The case of Sri Lanka provides anSeminars, Conferences, Addresses 425excellent example of how the construction of state ideology is influencedby religious forces, in this case Buddhism. Kapferer asserted that religionhad a deep territorialization aspect and that nationalism, in this sense, mighthave functioned as reterritorialization of a particular land and postcolonialstate. One can discern from his statements that, in the construction of stateideology in Sri Lanka, myths written by monks and religious rituals wereused to create a nationalist movement that eventually developed into a violentand destructive force in the context of Sri Lanka. Kapferer believes thatthe hierarchical order of the Sri Lankan state is embedded in the cosmologyof ancient religious chronicles.Christopher Cviic (The Royal Institute of International Affairs, London,UK) analyzed another phenomenon taking place in WesternEurope. His paper, “Chosen Peoples and Sacred Territories: TheBalkans,” discussed the relationship between religion, nation, and statein the Balkans throughout history and analyzed how these forces haveplayed themselves out in current events. According to Cviic, historicaldevelopments in the Balkans can provide important clues to understandingthe ongoing Balkan crisis, in which the Orthodox Church hasassumed the status of a nationalist institution representing the Serbiannation. The roots of these developments and the creation of a mythical“chosen” Serbian nation legitimized by religion can be traced to thedefeat and fall of medieval Serbia at Kosova by the Ottomans. Thisdefeat meant that they lost the land. However, under the Ottoman millet system, non-Muslim communitieswere allowed to organize their religious life and legal and educationalinstitutions. This allowed the Serbs to preserve and develop their ethnicand religious identities under the leadership of the Orthodox Church. Thus, religion and identity became inextricably linked, and the OrthodoxChurch assumed an extremely important role in the public life of individualBalkan nations. Cviic pointed out that “in the case of the Serbs, theirOrthodox Church played an important role in the formation of the modemSerbian nation-state by nurturing the myth of Kosova, named after theKosova Polje defeat by the Turks. Essential to that myth was the view thatby choosing to fight at Kosova Polje, the Serbs had opted for the Kingdomof Heaven. Later on the myth grew into a broader one, representing theSerbs as the martyr/victim people with a sacred mission of wresting theirHoly Territory of Kosova from the infidel Muslims to whom it had fallen.A later variant of that myth defined Serbia in terms of wherever Serbiangraves were to be found.” ...

Bullying is not a new thing for everyone. Bullying can occur at any age, but begins to increase in late elementary school, peaks in middle school, and declines at the college level. The existence of differences between groups and individuals is one factor in the occurrence of bullying. Physical, psychological, social conditions, from economy, religion, culture, race and gender are some of the factors that trigger bullying. Bullying is the biggest obstacle for children to self-actualize. Therefore, it takes handling and coordination from various parties such as parents, teachers, school principals, and employees. In this study, researchers tried to analyze and reveal about bullying prevention with a focus on the problem. How is the role of schools in tackling bullying behavior in children? This study uses a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Research informants are the Principal, Student Affairs, and BP Teachers. Data collection techniques used are interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used Miles and Huberman analysis. Test the validity of the data by triangulation and adequacy of references. The results of this study indicate that the role of schools in tackling bullying in children is as a mediator, by providing socialization, as an analyst of child development, by paying attention to children's academic achievements and also paying attention to children's backgrounds, as character building, with the rules that will make children character discipline.
