Abstract Abstract 5114 BACKGROUND Thalassemia syndromes are a heterogeneous anemia caused by mutation affecting globin chains of the hemoglobin molecule. It is estimated that the average life span of Rabhas (tribal population of North Bengal, Jalpaiguri) range from 42 – 45 years. This raised a concern that they are perishing due to some genetic disease. Hence Screening Camps were conducted to identify the reason. Rabha is a little known Scheduled Tribe community of West Bengal. Assam now renamed to Asom is a North-East India state of India with its capital at Dispur. The Rabha people are mainly found in the jungles of Jalpaiguri. West Bengal is a States and territories of India in eastern India. With Bangladesh, which lies on its eastern border the state forms the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. Jalpaiguri is the largest district of North Bengal, covering an area 6,245 sq.km. It is situated between 26 16' and 27 0' North latitudes and 88 4' and 89 53' East longitudes and Cooch Behar district. Cooch Behar is a district of the state of West Bengal, India, as well as the name of the town which gives its name to the district. The whole area of Eastern and Western Dooars, may be termed as the cradle land of the Rabhas. The Rabhas belong to Indo-Mongoloid group of people and have similarities with other members of Bodo. Bodo may stand for: *Bod A city in Norway* An ethnic community in India: the Bodo people*The Bodo language spoken by them. group such as Garo (tribe). The Garos are a tribe in Meghalaya, India, and Mymensingh District, Bangladesh, who call themselves Achik. Kachari. The Kacharis are the most widely spread tribe in northeast India. They are said to be the earliest inhabitants of the Brahmaputra Valley. Mech (tribe), Koch. Our objectives were- Awareness among the tribal population through talks and documentaries and discussions with community leaders with demonstrations at village level. The goal of thalassemia screening is to identify the carrier status among Rabha populations, to control the birth of affected children thus eradicating thalassemia among them & to save one of the oldest tribe from being extinct. MATERIAL & METHODS At first an Awareness Programme was held among the Rabhas & then with the written consent peripheral blood was collected for thalassemia screening test. The screening age lies between 10 – 35 years. Firstly, NESTROFT (Naked Eye Single Tube Red Cell Osmotic fragility Test) was performed for spot detection. This was followed by CBC (Complete Blood Count) & HPLC (High performance Liquid Chromatography) for confirmation. Molecular Analysis of every sample was done using ARMS PCR. All together 277 individuals were screened. Of which 119 (43%) were HbE carrier & 110 (40%) were HbE homozygous. Rest of them was normal. The carrier & homozygous status was confirmed by performing ARMS PCR. The sensitivity of NESTROFT in this case was 95 %. CONCLUSION Thus the percentage of HbE carrier & HbE homozygous is very high among the Rabhas. But one thing is to be noted that their % of haemoglobin is very high. This might be one of the reasons that they do not require blood transfusion during their life span. It is spreading like a rapid fire due to consanguineous marriage among them. This is one of the reasons for the early mortality. In our project of Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India we'll complete carrier status detection of total Rabha population (11,000) within 3 years. Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

There are many commonalities between the techniques used in Ericksonian psychotherapy and the healing rituals used by traditional Native American tribes. Milton H. Erickson had some Indian heritage and may have derived some of his therapeutic techniques from his study of tribal healing practices. A review of the literature shows that both approaches emphasize symbolic healing through the use of story-telling, metaphors, ambiguous tasks, ordeals, and rituals. Both also use direct and indirect hypnosis to relieve psychological distress. Implications for the practice of mental health counseling are described.

Material properties in the process of tribo-emission decides the characteristics of both spectra and intensity of triboluminescence. ZnS:Mn semiconductor material was proved to be a high emission triboluminescent material in many investigations; Ce- and Yb-doped hexacelsian possess the excellent shortwave triboluminescence character due to f-d electronic transition of doping element with position valances ions; the fracto-mecha-luminescence and photoluminescence spectra of phthalic acid, 4-hydroxy coumarin monohydrate, etc. present obviously a broad ultraviolet and violet waveband emissions, showing the disadvantage of these organic crystals as shortwave triboluminescence materials. Triboluminescence test apparatus of drop tower type have the tribo-emission of impact friction effect; the pin-on-disk type apparatus can perform the triboluminescent experiments with sliding friction mechanism; the twin ring tribometer is used to measure the triboluminescence of polymer material friction rings. These units supply a suitable conditions for obtaining triboluminescence with shortwave emission and persistent high intensity.

Design of new tooth shapes have been the focus of gear researchers aimed at overcoming the defects of involute gears. For the spur gear drive with curved path of contact, normal contact loads between engaged teeth vary in direction and magnitude, which makes it difficult to build the dynamics model of the gear drive. The current models treat the curved path of contact as an equivalent straight line without considering directional variation of normal tooth loads. This paper presents an efficient tribo-dynamics integrated model for this type of gear drive including effects of alternate meshing of single-double tooth pairs. Directional variation of normal tooth loads is considered by invoking geometric parameters of meshing points instantly. And the transient lubrication properties in mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication are also taken into account without extensive numerical simulations. The dynamics model of a gear drive with constant relative curvature (CRC gear drive) is given as an example. The model is verified with the results of the finite element model. The results indicate that the CRC gear drive has advantages over the involute gear drive in terms of lubrication performance and mechanical efficiency. The proposed model can be used to analyze dynamics features of gear drives with curved path of contact comprehensively.

AbstractHost–parasite dynamics involve coevolutionary arms races, which may lead to host specialization and ensuing diversification. Our general understanding of the evolution of host specialization in brood parasites is compromised by a restricted focus on bird and insect lineages. The cuckoo catfish (Synodontis multipunctatus) is an obligate parasite of parental care of mouthbrooding cichlids in Lake Tanganyika. Given the ecological and taxonomic diversity of mouthbrooding cichlids in the lake, we hypothesized the existence of sympatric host‐specific lineages in the cuckoo catfish. In a sample of 779 broods from 20 cichlid species, we found four species parasitized by cuckoo catfish (with prevalence of parasitism of 2%–18%). All parasitized cichlids were from the tribe Tropheini, maternal mouthbrooders that spawn over a substrate (rather than in open water). Phylogenetic analysis based on genomic (ddRAD sequencing) and mitochondrial (Dloop) data from cuckoo catfish embryos showed an absence of host‐specific lineages. This was corroborated by analyses of genetic structure and co‐ancestry matrix. Within host species, parasitism was not associated with any individual characteristic we recorded (parent size, water depth), but was costly as parasitized parents carried smaller clutches of their own offspring. We conclude that the cuckoo catfish is an intermediate generalist and discuss costs, benefits and constraints of host specialization in this species and brood parasites in general.

This chapter examines the next four novels in Gregory Benford's Galactic Center series: Great Sky River (1987), Tides of Light (1989), Furious Gulf (1992), and Sailing Bright Eternity (1995). The novels span vast expanses of spacetime and nine years of Benford's career. Great Sky River is the story of Killeen Bishop, the leader of a band of cyborg-humans who are engaged in constant struggle with the Mechs. Killeen's quest to save his ever-dwindling band leads him to more and more alien encounters. In Tides of Light the planet Killeen and his tribe find is an “inhabited island,” a place full of unexpected and unpleasant surprises. Furious Gulf shifts the narrative focus from Killeen to his son Toby, while Sailing Bright Eternity places its human protagonists in the most nonhuman environment modern science can imagine. The chapter explains how Benford works toward the grand union of spacetime, evolution, and human destiny in Sailing Bright Eternity.

This study proposes a formulation for the description of the gear mesh mechanical power loss under the thermal tribodynamic condition. A six degree-of-freedom motion equation set that models the vibratory motions of a general spur gear pair is coupled with the governing equations for the description of the gear thermal mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication to include the interactions between the gear dynamics and gear tribology disciplines in the modeling of the gear mesh mechanical power loss. The important role of the gear thermal tribo-dynamics in power loss is demonstrated by comparing the predictions of the proposed model to those under the thermal quasi-static condition, and the iso-thermal tribo-dynamic condition, respectively.

This study investigates the role of the tribo-dynamic behavior in the contact fatigue crack nucleation for spur gears. To describe this fatigue phenomenon, a six-degree-of-freedom (DOF) lumped parameter dynamics formulation is coupled with a set of mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) governing equations. The former provides the dynamic tooth force to the EHL analysis, and the latter yields the gear mesh damping as well as the friction excitations that are required in the gear dynamics simulation. The converged tribo-dynamic surface normal pressure and tangential shear are then used to determine the multi-axial stress fields using the potential theory based closed-form stress formulation for half space. Lastly, the stress means and amplitudes are implemented in a multi-axial fatigue criterion to assess the fatigue damage.

Abstract A finite element model of a hard disk drive (HDD) is developed for simulating shock testing and head slap. Individual components of the disk drive are modeled using Hypermesh, a commercially available mesh generator. The following components are modeled: the base plate, the impact surface, the actuator arm, the suspension arm, the head gimbal assembly (HGA) and the disk. The boundary conditions and contact surfaces are defined in Hypermesh [1] prior to importing them to the solver, LS-Dyna [2], for the transient finite element solution. The solution calculates displacement, velocity, acceleration and stress at every time step.
