Background: As the working styles of tribal and non-tribal working women differ, there may be variations in the anthropometric measurements of the hands. Physical prowess and anthropometric measures have strong correlations with various working activity performance levels. Objective: To evaluate the hand anthropometry in adult tribal and non- tribal light working women in Rajshahi Division. Methodology: This Cross-sectional comparative study was done at Department of anatomy, Rajshahi Medical College, Rajshahi in Different zone of Rajshahi division (Babolding Chapainawabgonj, Kolmakandi, Nachol, Chiniatola Rohonpur, Godagari Rajshahi, Bodolgachi Naogaon, Rajshahi University, Karitas Rajshahi, Rajshahi College) from 1 (one) year (July 2017 to June 2018). During the study, two group of women with in the age 18-45 years were randomly selected from different zone of Rajshahi division. Among that one group of tribal women total 135 and another group of non-tribal women total 150 respectively. Results: Throughout the research, 22.2% of tribal participants were 20 or older, whereas almost one-third (30.7%) of non-tribal participants were 20 or older. Moreover, 60 (44.44%) are light workers, whereas 75 (55.6%) are intermediate employees. There are 150 non-tribal employees, with 75 (50%) being light workers and 75 (50%) being moderate workers. palmer width was significantly greater among light worker tribal population than that among their non-tribal counterpart (p < 0.001). 3rd and the 4th digits of the former group were considerably longer than those of the later group (p = 0.073 and p = 0.002 respectively). All other hand anthropometrics were almost identically distributed between the light tribal and non-tribal workers. Conclusion: Hand/Palmer width was significantly greater among light worker tribal population than non-tribal group. In case of light workers 3rd and 4th digits length were longer in tribal than non-tribal group. In case of light workers rests of the .....

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the socioeconomic, anthropometric status and health morbidity profile of tribal and non tribal female brick-field workers of Paschim Medinipur district. Study design: Assessment of socioeconomic, health and nutritional parameters were done using 300 tribal & non tribal brick-field female workers at the age group of 18-30 years after randomized sampling. Place and duration of study: The study was done in 30 brick-fields located in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal in the month of November and December, 2013 for a period of 60 days. Methodology: Through oral questionnaire methods, socioeconomic studies, health morbidity profile and dietary assessments were performed. Anthropometric parameters were measured by the conventional anthropometric methods. Results: From the study it was observed that most of the women workers were illiterate. Female workers of non tribal and tribal groups engaged in this industry were living below the poverty line and the tribal workers showed poor economic status than the non-tribal women workers. The female workers showed significant decrease in height, weight and body mass index, compared to the Indian national standard values. Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) was also significantly lower to the Indian national standard in both age groups of female workers. The intake of energy, protein, carbohydrate carotene, riboflavin, dietary fiber, calcium and iron were significantly lower compared to the standard ICMR RDA. Conclusion: The female workers engaged in brick manufacturing works are mostly illiterate, economically backward, which make them vulnerable to health insecurity. Malnutrition among tribal & non tribal female workers is a problem that has perhaps been under-recognized, and should now take greater priority.International Journal of Occupational Safety and Health, Vol 4 No 2 (2014) 51 – 57

The study aimed to assess the developmental outcomes of Anganwadi children in tribal areas of Visakhapatnam district. The sample consists of 120 Anganwadi children were selected from thirty Anganwadi centres. From each Anganwadi centre, four boys and four girls in the age group of 3-6 years were randomly selected. The findings revealed that most of the Anganwadi children were in the age group of 4 - 6 years and maximum percentages (42%) of children were found in the class of UKG (Upper Kindergarten). The majority of the children (67%) belong to the nuclear type family. More than half (65.9%) of the children are able to complete the task on overall developmental outcomes of children based on child assessment cards (3-6 years). Boys and girls performed almost equally in all areas of development. Girls performed better than boys in the area of physical (40%), cognitive (12.5%), socio-emotional development (39.1%) and creativity (36.7 %). Boys performed better than girls in the area of language development (20 %) only. The present study's findings showed a gap in the implementation of the preschool curriculum by Anganwadi workers based on their knowledge levels of curriculum and children's developmental outcomes. Hence measures should be taken by the Integrated Child Development Service (ICDS) to improve the implementation status of preschool curriculum by Anganwadi workers. Majorly, more focus should be provided on preschool education (PSE) programmes along with other services such as nutrition, growth monitoring, referral services, parent education programme and health services provided at Anganwadi centres. As the Anganwadi workers have more additional workloads, it is difficult for them to focus on the implementation of the curriculum. So, one more helper can be recruited by the government to carry out additional duties of the Anganwadi worker. More preschool education training or Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) training should be conducted to enhance the growth & developmental need of children in an effective manner.

MGNREGS is a mammoth employment programme, launched more than a decade ago in the rural diaspora of the Indian sub-continent, with a massive annual budget of Rs.60,000crore, aimed at eradicating rural poverty and unemployment in one stroke, targeting a multitude of mainstream rural workers, as well as vulnerable categories such as the adivasis, the aged, the differently abled and disabled persons. Acclaimed as a model by most other countries, MGNREGS entitles every worker with wage employment for 100 days, augments their income and forms the base for a sustainable rural livelihood. With a plethora of studies made on the impact of this scheme on poverty eradication, the present study conducted in early 2019, concentrates on its impact on the primitive and nomadic tribal groups in Attappadi , a tribal- prominent block in Palakkad district of Kerala State. Conducted primarily thro’ Case studies, the present research highlights the role of the scheme in achieving not only the intended outcome, but also its unintended outcome. The study has profiled the role of the scheme in not only providing livelihood to all the workers, but also in restoring the normal life of persons with disabilities such as mental depression, speech and visual impairment. The mentally and physically challenged workers, who were hitherto confined to their homes or settlements and were a frustrated lot, are now able to ease their depression, while working, and interacting with fellow workers, and find cheer and solace in their company. Besides, it has provided physical safety, economic security, and social status to the deserted women, divorcees, and children with disabilities. Though living in poverty, the fellow workers have proved that they have concern and commitment for not only their distraught co-workers but also for their distressed family members. By sharing the work of the weak and the vulnerable at the worksite, they have demonstrated that “humanitarianism” exists amidst destitution and deprivation and “compassion and camaraderie” are the primary assets of the workers, than poverty and backwardness.

Background In order for low and middle income countries (LMIC) to transition to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) test based cervical cancer screening, a greater understanding of how to implement these evidence based interventions (EBI) among vulnerable populations is needed. This paper documents outcomes of an implementation research on HPV screening among women from tribal, rural, urban slum settings in India. Methods A mixed-method, pragmatic, quasi-experimental trial design was used. HPV screening on self-collected cervical samples was offered to women aged 30–60 years. Implementation strategies were 1) Assessment of contextual factors using both qualitative and quantitative methods like key informant interviews (KII), focus group discussions (FGDs), pre-post population sample surveys, capacity assessment of participating departments 2) enhancing provider capacity through training workshops, access to HPV testing facility, colposcopy, thermal ablation/cryotherapy at the primary health care centers 3) community engagement, counselling for self-sampling and triage process by frontline health care workers (HCWs). Outcomes were assessed using the RE-AIM (Reach, Effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework. Results Screening rate in 8 months’ of study was 31.0%, 26.7%, 32.9%, prevalence of oncogenic HPV was 12.1%, 3.1%, 5.5%, compliance to triage was 53.6%, 45.5%, 84.6% in tribal, urban slum, rural sites respectively. Pre-cancer among triage compliant HPV positive women was 13.6% in tribal, 4% in rural and 0% among urban slum women. Unique challenges faced in the tribal setting led to programme adaptations like increasing honoraria of community health workers for late-evening work and recalling HPV positive women for colposcopy by nurses, thermal ablation by gynaecologist at the outreach camp site. Conclusions Self-collection of samples combined with HCW led community engagement activities, flexible triage processes and strengthening of health system showed an acceptable screening rate and better compliance to triage, highlighting the importance of identifying the barriers and developing strategies suitable for the setting. Native American women and children suffer from domestic violence at an alarming rate on and off Indian reservations in the United States. Often these families that are impacted by domestic violence are involved in the state/county child welfare system. This study was to gain knowledge about Native American tribal child social workers experiences and challenges with co-occurrences of domestic violence and child maltreatment cases. This study used an exploratory, qualitative design with a phenomenological approach by collecting data through face-to-face and over the phone interviews with four Native American tribal child social workers from four different tribes across the nation. This design allowed participants the opportunity to provide a more in-depth explanation from their own personal experiences regarding their experiences and challenges working with domestic violence and child maltreatment cases. The study found that there is a need for state/county social workers to have a better understanding of the historic and current experiences of Native people from a cultural, spiritual, and socioeconomic perspective through effective and consistent training on the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). The study also found, that there is a need for state/county administration and social workers to build relationships with tribal child social workers in order to provide culturally competent and effective policies and services to serve Native American communities.

Children with chronic illnesses have a doubled risk of developing psychosocial maladjustment--emotional problems, behavior disorder or difficulties in social relationships. Social work support and counselling aims to reduce this secondary morbidity, and is a common form of hospital-based psychosocial service. The first randomized controlled trial of this type of intervention was carried out to evaluate its effectiveness in treating and preventing maladjustment. This thesis describes how child behavior outcomes were assessed before and 4 months after a 6 month period of social worker assistance in 173 children randomized to intervention, and in 169 controls, all with chronic illnesses.
No significant difference between intervention and control groups in the overall prevalence of maladjustment was found. There was no evidence to support a therapeutic or preventive effect of social work counselling on child behavior outcomes, nor was there improvement in child perceived competence. A search for treatment interactions failed to reveal any sub-group that benefitted from the intervention, and restriction of the analysis to individuals who actually received the intervention does not alter any of these conclusions.
Measurement problems, co-intervention, or other forms of bias cannot account for the negative results. It is speculated that if social work support is to be effective, it should be targetted, potent, of adequate duration, and possibly integrated within specialist clinic services.

This thesis details my applied thesis project and experience in the evaluation of a workforce development through sustainable construction program. It describes the need of my client, Sweet Grass Consulting and their contractual partner, the Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation, in the evaluation of Thunder Valley CDC's Workforce Development through Sustainable Construction Program. My role involved the development of an extensive evaluation package for this program and data analysis of evaluation materials to support Thunder Valley CDC's grant-funded Workforce Development Program. I place the efforts of Thunder Valley CDC in the context of their community, the Pine Ridge Reservation of the Lakota People, and within an historical and contemporary context to highlight the implications of the efforts of Thunder Valley CDC. Using the theoretical frameworks of cultural revitalization and community economic development, I attempt to highlight two important components of Thunder Valley CDC's community development efforts - cultural revitalization for social healing, and development that emphasizes social, community and individual well-being. Thunder Valley CDC's Workforce Development through Sustainable Construction Program is still in its early stages, and so this first year of implementation very much represented a pilot phase. However, while specific successes are difficult to measure at this point, general successes are viewable in the daily operations of Thunder Valley CDC that exemplify their stated mision and goals. These successes include initiatives that holistically address community needs; relevancy in the eyes of the community they serve; support for the community and for Program participants' unique challenges; and a cultural restoration and revitalization emphasis that underlies and strengthens all of this. The program thus has the potential to provide a model for community development by challenging dominant "development" paradigms and utilizing community resources and assets for community development that reflects the community's values and worldviews.

Mace, Rachel Kathryn. „Character on trial : reading and judgement in Henry Fielding's works“. Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/10893.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
To be placed above the Reach of Deceit is to be placed above the Rank of a human Being - Henry Fielding, A Clear State of the Case of Elizabeth Canning, 1753. Throughout his literary and legal careers, Fielding was concerned with the difficulties of reading and judging character accurately. He saw society as being rife with deceptive and duplicitous individuals and articulated his concerns in his writing, offering various advices to his readers. This thesis examines Fielding’s changing approaches to characterization and his proposed methods for judging character. There is a strong tradition within Fielding criticism, particularly prevalent in the mid-twentieth century, of seeing Fielding’s characters as ‘essential’, that is to say, innate and unchanging: the product of his theory of ‘Conservation of Character’. As such, his characters are often deemed easy-to-read and lacking fully-determined internal lives. Since the mid-1990s, however, critics have begun to argue that his characters are more dynamic than first supposed. While critics have noted the role of judgement in Fielding’s novels, it has not yet been explored in depth in his plays. With some notable exceptions, few studies have explored the interrelation between his novels and plays in a sustained way. I argue that Fielding examines questions of discerning character in both his plays and his novels, and that the early plays are essential for understanding the concepts which are central to his theory of judgement. This thesis contributes to studies of Fielding in three ways: by intervening in long-standing discussions of Fielding’s characterization; by analysing themes of good nature, perception and gossip which develop from his early dramatic work into the better-known novels; and by exploring its relationship to wider ideas about character in the eighteenth-century theatre and novel. Beginning with his plays, I consider Fielding’s presentation of the judgement of character in a range of his works from 1728-1753. I suggest that the early plays gave Fielding the space in which to experiment with the presentation of character and his relationship to his audience. His novels build upon concepts first introduced in the plays, such as good nature, perception and gossip, which he suggests are key to perceiving character. Fielding encourages his audiences and readers to engage with character as a process of discovery (as it is in life), but does not punish or mock them when they make mistakes. In doing so, he gives his audiences and readers indulgences he could ill afford in his magisterial career: time for judgement and the luxury of occasionally being proved wrong.

Annotation:
Aim: The Aim of this PhD study is to study the performance of mature age office workers descending multiple flights of stairs in trial evacuations of high rise office buildings in the context of extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Method: A case study process coupled with mixed methods data collection and analysis was selected with the unit of analysis being the office worker descending the stairs. An Exploratory case study involving the reanalysis of data from a similar study was undertaken to confirm the selection of the research method. Six high rise buildings were selected varying from 7 to 36 storeys . Trial evacuations were held and data collected via survey, observation and physical assessment. Two explanatory case studies involving a Delphi group and focus groups classified the main contextual issues as the intrinsic ones of the occupant and the extrinsic ones of Stair Design and Construction, Others on the Stairs and Management/ Maintenance. The other explanatory study comprised a directed content analysis of a two extremely relevant media documents related to multiple flight stair descent. The data was analysed and findings established by generalisation where trends could be explained quantitatively and otherwise via triangulation. Results and Conclusions: Fatigue predicting descent performance ability was determined by triangulation and generalisation. Density could mask fatigue as the result of delays that would allow people to descend at more slowly. Descent performance ability for 50% of the population was 300 metres in 1980 reducing to 240 metres in 2010. The risk of falling related directly to this distance and the spiralling action of turning at each landing . Triangulation showed this action increased the risk of vertigo and dizziness as well as the impact of increased BMI and health conditions on stability. The significant (p<.05) contextual extrinsic factors were found to be stair descent risk, need for clear visibility and support from reachable handrails, trial evacuation strategies and procedures and group dynamics. There are other less significant findings explained by context and the “cause and effect directed” case study research method.

Sexual minorities face unique stressors that contribute to worse mental health (Meyer, 2003). Positive psychology interventions may be able to ameliorate this. The current study pilot tested an identityspecific positive psychology intervention among 20 sexual minorities. Results suggest that the intervention reduced depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and anticipated discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. This implies that positive psychology interventions may be able to address health disparities among sexual minorities.

AbstractGiven its proximity to the Russian border, the city of Trabzon was a strategic port for the Young Turk government against the backdrop of war with Russia. While there is an extensive body of literature about Trabzon during the Armenian Genocide, the experiences of Armenian women and girls who stayed in the city remain unexamined. This chapter draws on the Trabzon trials and survivor testimonies to explore their experiences. While Trabzon Armenians received an official order of deportation, on June 26, 1915, the Vali Cemal Azmi made an “exemption” for Armenian women in later stages of pregnancy and for children “when the parents so desired.” Girls up to 15 years old and boys up to 10 years old remained and were placed in large houses throughout the city. After four years, all male children disappeared, and the girls who survived mostly did so in Turkish households to which they were given as gifts or sold to serve as a wives, servants, or sex slaves. In 1919, the Turkish Courts-Martial brought the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide to trial in Constantinople. Cemal Azmi, Yenibahçeli Nail, who was the Committee on Union and Progress secretary for Trabzon, and five officials who worked with him stood before the court. The charges against them included organizing and implementing the massive annihilation of the Trabzon Armenians, the plunder of their property, the rape and murder of women and children, and the drowning of around 50 pregnant women in the Black sea. There were 20 sessions of the Trabzon trial, held between March 26 and May 20, 1919, during which witnesses and survivors testified. Among them were Misses Siranush Manukian, Philomene Nurian, Sofia Makhokhian, Aruseak Gylchian, Miss Arabian, and other women who witnessed mass drownings, were survivors of rape, forced marriages, and forced prostitution. The trial was extensively covered by both the Armenian and the Turkish press, whose representatives were present at the daily hearings. Close examination of these women's testimonies and other shreds of evidence of this trial shows how gendered the Armenian genocide was and how women were targeted for both their gender and national identity.

In India, tourism plays an important role in economic development and creation of jobs. The Approach Paper of the 12th Five Year Plan prepared by the Planning Commission highlights the need to adopt “pro-poor tourism” for increasing net benefits to the poor and ensuring that tourism growth contributes to poverty eradication. Tourism plays a key role in socio-economic progress through creation of jobs, enterprise, infrastructure, and revenue earnings. The Planning Commission has identified tourism as the second largest sector in the country in providing employment opportunities for low-skilled workers. Odisha has a large tribal population: out of India's 427 Scheduled Tribes, Odisha accounts for 62 tribal communities who constitute 27.08 percent of the state's population (2001). Of the 62 Scheduled Tribes, the state has declared 11 tribal communities as Primitive Tribal Groups. Each of these tribal communities is rich in social institutions and poor in economy. Achieving poverty eradication requires actions on a variety of complementary fronts and scales, but a prerequisite of significant progress is pro-poor growth – growth that benefits the poor tribal community. This chapter explores these.

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human existence, serving as a platform for sharing information and conveying symbolic meaning. Public health communication is crucial for disease prevention, health promotion, emergency preparedness, and vaccine advocacy. A qualitative study applied the framework of 'Communication Anthropology' to understand cultural sensitivity, contextual nuances, recommendations within a specific tribal community in western Maharashtra, India. Themes “Uncovering the Sources of Health Communication Dynamics in a Tribal Community,” “Impact of Media and Technology on Tribal Community Health and Lifestyle,” and “Cultural Influences on Tribal Health Behavior” emerged from the study. Enhancing health communication for India's tribal populations requires culturally tailored strategies. Involving local communities is recommended, leveraging traditional art and local artists to convey health messages effectively. Integrating multimedia such as radio jingles and videos, incentivizing healthcare workers, and utilizing visual aids with simplified language can further enhance health communication.

Abstract Why did a body such as the International Labour Organisation (ILO) enter into the regulation of the rights of indigenous peoples? The organization’s official answer reflexively points to history. According to the collective memory transmitted generation after generation within the organization: Since its creation in 1919, the ILO has been concerned with the situation of indigenous and tribal populations. It undertook studies as early as 1921 on the situation of indigenous workers, and in 1926 the Governing Body established a Committee of Experts on Native Labour to for- mulate international standards for the protection of indigenous workers.

To be competitive in a “deregulated” market, power plant workers must be better qualified and more versatile than ever. Regardless of his or her area of expertise (operations, craft maintenance, plant controls, or other), tomorrow’s plant worker must be better skilled than ever before. Regardless of plant design, fuel type, or loading schedules, the defining difference in plant performance resides in the people who operate, maintain, and manage the plant. Whether it’s how they respond to abnormal operating conditions, how conscientious they are with plant chemistry, or how well they test and maintain critical components; it’s people, not equipment that make the difference between a well run facility and one with never ceasing problems. According to industry statistics, power generation facilities will loose between 30% and 50% of their most experienced workers over the next five years. This means that the people who hold the “tribal knowledge” of your facility will be leaving in the not too distant future. Furthermore, the availability of a trainable labor pool to replace the “Boomers” is in very short supply and difficult to recruit.

Blocked by novel judicial defenses that deprived them of the common law remedies that the general public enjoyed, workers agitated for decades until growing political pressure led employers and the courts to accept worker’s compensation in America at the beginning of the twentieth century. Two remarkable side-effects of the Worker’s Compensation Acts were the ignition of the safety movement and the reformulation of tort law in regards to technological harms. These changes came just as some of the dangers formerly reserved for industrial workers began to be visited upon consumers in the form of new, complex, and mass-produced products. Safety-minded engineers joined together to reassess the role of technology in accident-related injury, creating a new framework for design that shed old deterministic assumptions about operator behavior. Likewise, the legal community re-imagined tort law in view of a broad no-fault worker’s compensation system. The legal formulation culminated in a strict products liability regime in 1964, and a sea change in the social status of technology itself. But these two revolutionary conceptions, both oriented toward the protection of the user, are not equal: modern legal disputes serve to expose the disconnect between the engineering and legal frameworks of safe design.

Fatigue during repetitive tasks in the workplace has been intrinsically connected with occupational risk and a reduction in productivity. Currently, the measures taken are based on subjective interpretations of fatigue by the workers or on direct muscular activity, which then make up for a cumulative evaluation of fatigue. The concept of “Industry 4.0” wearable devices would allow a continuous monitoring and thus, a more realistic representation of their fatigue levels.Aim: To quantify heart rate variability, measuring cardiovascular responsiveness, during repetitive work when fatigue is present. Tasks: A protocol was developed to simulate a real-life workplace scenario with a set of low-intensity repetitive tasks that are commonly practiced. The signals obtained were then processed, and heart rate variability was calculated using fractal analysis and time domain variables. Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that 1) the amount of variability and 2) the structure of variability will change during repetitive work in the presence of fatigue.Methodology: Participants were asked to perform three 10-minute trials of a repetitive task. Between each trial, a muscular fatigue protocol was carried out, targeting the main agonist muscle. An ECG was collected during the trials (Baseline, Fatigue 1, and Fatigue 2) through a wearable band placed on the level of the xiphoid appendix. Results: The nonlinearity of the heart rate variability showed no statistically significant changes, unlike the time domain measures that significantly differentiated the baseline trial from the fatigue trials, namely the Standard Deviation of NN intervals, the Root Mean Square of successive RR interval differences, Coefficient of Variation, and Heart Rate itself. Conclusions: These results are enthusiastic for applying algorithms that use heart rate variability to quantify cardiovascular responsiveness to fatigue during repetitive work. They show that with information in the time domain, it is possible to verify physiological changes that the worker is undergoing. Additionally, these changes are also related to the amount of variability and not to the fractal structure of heart rate variability.

Fatigue has been demonstrated to have a direct negative effect on the productivity of the worker and a marked rise in the long-term occupational risk. The measures being presently applied mainly target the muscular activity directly, that together with subjective understandings of one’s own fatigue levels make up an inaccurate cumulative evaluation of fatigue. “Industry 4.0” wearable devices allows for a more complete and continuous measurement of variables related to fatigue, and thus represent a more accurate value of the worker’s fatigue level.Aim: To analyse the structure of heart rate variability, as a measure of cardiovascular responsiveness, during repetitive work when muscular fatigue is present. Tasks: A protocol was developed to simulate a real-life workplace scenario with a set of low-intensity repetitive tasks that are commonly practiced. The signals obtained were then processed, and heart rate variability was calculated using multifractal analysis and frequency domain variables.Hypothesis: It was hypothesized that the structure of variability will change during repetitive work in the presence of fatigue.Methodology: Participants were asked to perform three 10-minute trials of a repetitive task involving a specific set of movements commonly required for work. Between each trial, a fatigue protocol was carried out, targeting the main agonist muscle. An ECG was collected through a wearable band placed on the level of the xiphoid appendix during the three trials denominated: Baseline, Fatigue 1, and Fatigue 2. Results: Significant differences were found in Very Low Frequency and Low Frequency in the Baseline and Fatigue 2 conditions. However, there were no significant differences in High Frequency. The results of the fractal analysis did not show any significant differences for any q-order, indicating that the fractal of HRV is maintained. Conclusions: These results are enthusiastic for applying algorithms that use heart rate variability to quantify cardiovascular responsiveness to fatigue during repetitive work. These results suggest that fatigue alters the variability structure of HRV, but the fractal structure of HRV remains unchanged.

This paper describes the trial of making microcapsules including a bubble for shock wave drug delivery systems and evaluation of their mechanical properties. We have proposed drug delivery systems (DDS) using shock waves in order to apply micro/nano technology in the fields of biomedical engineering. In this system, a microcapsule including a gas bubble is flown in the blood vessel, and finally broken by shock induced microjet, then drug is reached to the affected part in the body as same as traditional DDS. In this paper, the mechanism for deformation and disintegration of capsules in our previous works is reviewed, and the trials of making special microcapsules are discussed. To determine Young’s modulus of capsule membrane mentioned above, the membrane is deformed by the aspiration device and the deformation is compared with computational result by FEM.

Poliomyelitis (polio) remains a vital global public health challenge, particularly in countries where eradication efforts are ongoing. For almost three decades, polio programme and frontline workers in Pakistan have suffered human and financial losses due to complex political and bureaucratic management, local resistance to programme efforts, and the context of cross-border insurgency and insecurity.1 Many stakeholders in Pakistan continue to have low confidence in frontline workers and polio vaccination campaigns. In this environment, it is essential that vaccination programmes localise – by taking careful account of the local context, improving local ownership of the programmes, understanding and mitigating the issues at a grassroots level, and tailoring efforts to achieve polio eradication goals. This brief draws on evidence from academic and grey literature, data on polio vaccine uptake, consultations with partners working on polio eradication in Pakistan, and the authors’ own programme implementation experience in the country. The brief reviews the social, cultural, and contextual considerations relevant to increasing polio vaccine uptake amongst vulnerable groups in Pakistan’s tribal areas. It focuses on the current country context, in the aftermath of the 2018 merger of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (KPK). This brief is part of a series authored by participants from the SSHAP Fellowship, and was written by Luqman Hakeem and Riaz Hussain from Cohort 2. Contributions were provided by response partners in Pakistan including health communication and delivery staff and local administrative authorities. This brief was reviewed by Muhammad Sufyan (University of Swabi) and Ilyas Sharif (Quaid-e-Azam College of Commerce, University of Peshawar). The brief was supported by Megan Schmidt-Sane and Santiago Ripoll at the Institute of Development Studies and is the responsibility of SSHAP.

It underscores the importance of a firm conviction in the cause as a precondition of talent which works in such a context. It draws attention to the persistence and skill required to develop lasting relations of trust with the community and the challenges involved in balancing constructive contestation as well as support for the local and state administration. This case represents many similar small organizations that carry out credible and often pivotal work in their own contexts. Through the example of CDC, this case aims to build an appreciation of how nurturing such organizations is critical to give due share to those who remain invisible to the mainstream developmental discourse."

Early detection and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, HIV, and hepatitis B and C are vital to minimise the harm they cause. This Evidence Check aimed to identify effective initiatives that engage and support GPs and the GP clinic workforce in NSW to increase testing for these conditions. It also aimed to identify effective modifications to practice management software to increase GP engagement in screening and care for these conditions. Sixty-two articles were found in total. The most effective initiatives used multiple interventions, particularly provider education and quality improvement. They involved both GPs and other health workers, and offered clinic-level initiatives to help identify patients at higher risk (e.g. software-generated alerts) and engage them in testing (e.g. through self-collected specimens). Models of care that used nurse-led testing or links to specialist services offered a way to increase capacity to carry out testing. The quality of evidence was mixed—there were few randomised controlled trials, and little evidence about the sustainability of the initiatives over time, highlighting the need for further high-quality research.

For the first time in Ukrainian journalism, the issue of totalitarian journalism has been outlined. The basis of the analysis is the archival materials of the Chernivtsi regional newspaper «Soviet Bukovyna» founded in 1940, which was re-registered in 1991 with the name «Bukovyna». The specifics of the formation of the assets of «pen workers» during the Soviet era are clarified; the qualitative composition of the staff, the reasons for their turnover and the typical types of journalists of that time were analyzed; information about the trials and investigations of journalists who were widely used against them in accordance with the legislation of 1940 wasintroduced into scientific circulation; biographical portraits of individuals are given. The personnel policy of the Bolshevik Party in the western Ukrainian territories annexed on the eve of World War II had its own specifics. The editors-in-chief of the newly formed newspapers were usually verified personnel sent from the eastern regions. They were selected primarily for the most important ideological qualities – loyalty to the cause of the Bolshevik Party, the ability to pursue its policy in the entrusted case. Literary abilities, accurate knowledge of the specifics of the journalistic craft, practical experience in this field were desirable, but not decisive. With the enactment of a strict law in 1940 on criminal liability for breach of labor discipline, delays in work without good reason, the cases of a number of journalists were transferred to the district courts at the place of work. In the first postwar years, the Central Committee of the party strongly encouraged local party committees to issue to functionaries of the ideological front so-called party vouchers for work in newspaper editorial offices. Keywords: journalism of the totalitarian era, newspaper «Soviet Bukovyna», cadres of journalism, types of Soviet journalists, trials and investigations against journalists, journalistic destinies.

Randomised control trials (RCTs) have attracted increasing attention in evaluation of public policy. They have become some sort of gold standard to determine “what works” in international development. However, in some cases, the key feature of RCTs – the random allocation of treatment(s) – may be unethical, politically infeasible, or simply impossible. This paper discusses the main barriers to answer causal questions of key interest in policy evaluation. It then reviews approaches complement to RCTs which can be used to answer evaluation questions in conjunction with RCTs and alternatives useful whenever RCTs are not applicable. The paper discusses issues in drawing causal inference from these alternative approaches and provides some examples from specific sectors where standard RCTs are less likely to be applicable.

Traditional methods for communicating the presence of maintenance activities and work zones have been done with a variety of fixed signs. The increase of in-vehicle connectivity on our roads—either directly integrated into the vehicle or via an application running on a mobile phone–provides an opportunity for additional communication to motorists about the presence of emergency vehicles, maintenance activities, or work zones. Although the exact form of the in-vehicle communication is evolving and will continue to do so, a critical first step is to leverage the extensive telematics currently deployed on the Indiana Department of Transportation Vehicles. The objective of this study was to conduct trial deployments on a variety of INDOT vehicles, and to begin a dialog with private sector partners about what information INDOT can share that will provide a safer roadway for all motorists, INDOT workers, and INDOT partners. The final design of connected vehicles will likely change considerably over the next few years as market forces determine what type of information is directly integrated into the vehicle and what information is integrated via cell phones. This report identifies several examples where in-vehicle notification alerting drivers to the presence of service and contractor vehicles was acknowledged by drivers. Hard braking data is being used to determine if these alerts have a meaningful impact on safety. Early results indicate substantial reduction in hard braking events (from 29 to 3) between conditions when queue trucks are not used and when they are used. A larger data set is currently being collected with Hoosier Helpers to isolate the impact of the in-vehicle alerts.
