Purpose This paper studies the preemptive scheduling problem of independent jobs on identical machines. The purpose of this paper is to minimize the makespan under the imposed constraints, namely, the ones that relate the transportation delays which are required to transport a preempted job from one machine to another. This study considers the case when the transportation delays are variable. Design/methodology/approach The contribution is twofold. First, this study proposes a new linear programming formulation in real and binary decision variables. Then, this study proposes and implements a solution strategy, which consists of two stages. The goal of the first stage is to obtain the best machines order using a local search strategy. For the second stage, the objective is to determine the best possible sequence of jobs. To solve the preemptive scheduling problem with transportation delays, this study proposes a heuristic and two metaheuristics (simulated annealing and variable neighborhood search), each with two modes of evaluation. Findings Computational experiments are presented and discussed on randomly generated instances. Practical implications The study has implications in various industrial environments when the preemption of jobs is allowed. Originality/value This study proposes a new linear programming formulation for the problem with variable transportation delays as well as a corresponding heuristic and metaheuristics.

Introduction. Due to the development of building and transport construction in the Republic of Tuva, a lack of capacity of an equipment fleet of ground transportation and technological machines is predicted. The condition of cars changes eventually and not for the better. The operability and productivity of equipment decreases, and the costs of measures to maintain it in working condition are constantly increasing. Therefore, the desire for failure-free operation of machines and to increase the duration of its use is understandable. Each enterprise is interested in the efficient use of the current machinery, and operational - especially since the efficiency of its use is the goal of such an enterprise.Materials and methods. To improve the working capacity and increase the productivity of the equipment, to reduce the costs of maintenance and repair activities a methodology of optimizing the process of forming an equipment fleet of ground transportation and technological machines in the Republic of Tuva has been developed in this article. The methodology consists of three blocks - “The analysis of a regional equipment fleet of ground transportation and technological machines”, “Modeling the processes of updating the equipment fleet of ground transportation and technological machines” and “Research on processes to ensure the operability of the equipment fleet of ground vehicles transport and technological machines”.Results. The modeling result is the formulation of recommendations on updating the equipment fleet of ground transportation and technological machines and on the formation of a system for ensuring the operability of the equipment fleet of ground transportation and technological machines considering the planned update.Discussion and conclusion. Estimated ratios are obtained for assessing the losses of enterprises due to insufficient equipment level of ground transport and technological machines.Financial transparency: the authors have no financial interest in the presented materials or methods. The crux of injection mold manufacturing optimize scheduling is the job time dispatching in operation level. In the injection mold manufacturing process, many factors should be considered. The holiday arrangement and the machine’s duty time policy should be calculated in the searching of job time span. Generally, the different machine resources have the different duty time policies. So the available time span of machines is noncontinuous and the daily available time length is different. To a single mold part, the different operations may be made in different plant. The transportation time will change the scheduling result a lot. A Web Service is designed for the transportation time evaluation. An operation job time dispatching algorithm for injection mold manufacturing is proposed. It can be invoked to support the decoding of the GA chromosome representation.

Under the adverse trend of fossil energy attenuation and air pollution, wind power effectively alleviates the global energy crisis and environmental pollution. For wind turbines, especially large offshore wind turbines, their transportation, installation, and maintenance are very inconvenient. In order to solve this problem, this paper presents an E-core stator modular machine which inserts stator gap into the unwounded teeth of the fractional-slot concentrated winding (FSCW) permanent magnet (PM) machine. The winding factor of the new stator structure machine was derived. The electromagnetic models of 12-slot/10-pole and 12-slot/14-pole modular FSCW PM machines and traditional FSCW PM machines were established using the finite element analysis (FEA) software, and the open-circuit flux density, cogging torque, load torque, loss, and efficiency were simulated and analyzed. The results showed that the modular structure of E-core stator not only simplified the transportation, installation, and maintenance of wind turbines, but also optimized the electromagnetic performance of the 12-slot/14-pole machine, i.e., improved the output torque and operation efficiency.

The article presents how three scaled down industrial machinery models were designed and built as an educational tool to present the transport of particulate material. The literature review showed calculation models for equipment at industrial level, not for laboratory level. There were chosen the most representative means of commercial transport for particulate materials: a conveyor screw, a conveyor belt and a bucket elevator. These three machines were calculated and built in polycarbonate to allow visualization of their internal functioning. The three devices are controlled by a programmable logic controller (PLC) and connected to each other by a SCADA network. The equipment is modular so as not to alter the order of operation, being able to obtain different work sequences. In addition, a man-machine graphic interface (HMI) was developed to supervise and to control the designed equipment. The results of particulate material mass flow obtained are approximately coincident with those estimated, validating the use of calculation models for much lower levels of work. Finally, it is emphasized that the system obtained is an environment for students to implement control techniques using the sensors and motors used in the designs.

This paper examines one of the most important operational problems in seaport terminals, namely the Berth Allocation Problem (BAP) which finds an optimal assignment of ships to the berths that minimize the total waiting time of all ships and reduce congestion in ports. Our problem is to affect and schedule n ships on m berths to minimize the processing time and the waiting time for all the ships in the port. Therefore, ships stay time in the port known by the flow time, while respecting the physical constraints existing at the port (such as the depth of the water berth and the draft of the ship’s water), knowing that each ship can only accommodate one ship at a time. It is as if it was a case of n tasks and m machines in parallel, and we wanted to schedule the passage of different tasks on different machines, knowing that each task can only pass on one machine and that the interruption of the task is not allowed. For example, if a job started on a machine, it will remain on this machine up to its completion. In our case, tasks are ships and machines are berths that are opting to minimize the total flow time and, therefore, to decrease the residence time of all the ships in the port. In a first step, a Mixed Integer Linear Program model is designed to address the BAP with the aim of minimizing the flow time of the ships in the port, our sample can be used for both static and dynamic berth allocation cases. In a second step, this model is illustrated with a real case study in the Tunisian port of Rades and solved by a commercial solver CPLEX. Calculation results are presented and compared with those obtained by port authorities in Radès.

The rate of vehicle accidents in various regions is still high accidents caused by many factors, such as driver negligence, vehicle damage, and road damage. However, transportation technology developed very rapidly, for example, a smart car. The smart car is land transportation that does not use humans as drivers but uses machines automatically. However, vehicle accidents are still possible because automatic machines do not have the intelligence like humans to see all the vehicle's obstacles. Obstacles can take many forms, one of them is road potholes. We propose a method for detecting road potholes using the Gray-Level Cooccurrence Matrix with three features and using the Support Vector Machine as a classification method. We analyze the combination of GLCM Contrast, Correlation, and Dissimilarity features. The results showed that the combination of Contrast and Dissimilarity features had the best accuracy of 92.033 %, with a computing time of 0.0704 seconds per frame.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to enhance the capability in managing the maintenance of the transportation process from a quarry to a crushing plant, measured by the availability value and the process capability value. Design/methodology/approach The maintenance management plan consists of plans for three levels of management: strategy, tactical and operational maintenance plans. The Deming cycle is a continuous improvement tool use for controlling and monitoring activities of the plans. There are three Deming cycles according to these plans, the first of which involves the improvement of machine performance and investment evaluation. The second involves the improvement of plans, schedule, and activities of preventive maintenance including autonomous maintenance. The third is for human resource development on maintenance works. Moreover, the feedback of a prior round of each cycle comes early to detect abnormalities that provide better capability in maintenance. Findings Three Deming cycles can use for enhancing the maintenance management. The parameters are availability (A) of machines and the capability process (Cpk) of the transportation process. The results of this research state that the availability value of machines increases to 80-92 percent while the process capability value increases to 0.56. Practical implications The maintenance management, especially strategic plan, tactical plan and operational plan via the Deming cycle, can be implemented in other medium-sized industries with limited technology and personnel. It was found that the implementation of the plans has continued to progress with the Deming cycle. Originality/value This paper proposes how to successfully implement the maintenance management for medium-sized industries with limited technology and personnel. The maintenance management of three levels is carried out simultaneously by using the Deming cycle. This work has proven to be successful which can be expressed in the availability and the capability process values.

In practical situations, machines might not be available during certain time of period due to deterministic or stochastic causes in many production systems. And, processing times are always not exact as they have been predicted. In this paper, we attempted to study the three machines flow shop scheduling problem in which probabilities are associated with processing times of jobs involving transportation time, machine breakdown interval and weights of jobs. A simple heuristic approach is proposed to find optimal or near optimal sequence minimizing the weighted mean production flow time. A numerical example has been provided to illustrate and clarify the proposed algorithm.

Performed work provides an opportunity to increase productivity of flexible rotor lines in 3-4 times by increasing the number of goods in 2-8 times by processing several sizes of products in each group tool module. The developed design methods for flexible rotary machines and group tool modules allows you to create high-performance systems based on combining a group-volume production of products of several sizes in the mass diversified flow of goods. Organizational and technological bases of flexible rotary machines creation are first developed in this paper. Every tool module handles multiple sizes products in these new machines. New links have been established between the structural elements of flexible rotary line with the group tool module and a combination of flow characteristics. That allows us to determine the structure of the flow of goods by combining several large-scale productions of products of several sizes in the mass diversified flow of goods.

Abstract Permanent magnet motor drive is a widely used technology, offering many advantages, such as exceptional speed, torque control and greater flexibility. Improvement of reliability and efficiency has become a great research interest. Towards this direction and taking into account the major developments in permanent machine technology over the recent years, the use of energy recovery converters has been introduced in various industrial applications. In this paper, the effects of harmonics on a three-phase motor controlled by a drive are analysed, and the behaviours of the filter topology after adopting regenerative drives are studied. The main contribution of this study is a methodology to foresee the standards that can be achieved with the use of an active front end system topology with filters. Moreover, the use of an optimum filter that eases the power system distortion is presented. The analysis presented in this paper is validated experimentally.

Linear machines are widely employed in robotics, transportation and manufacturing industries because complex rotation-to-translation conversion mechanism is no longer required. This paper proposed a novel tubular linear machine with dual permanent magnet (PM) Halbach arrays to achieve high force output performance. Based on Lorentz force law, the magnetic force output and force ripple for three-phase winding linear machine is formulated in analytical way. By taking advantage of the analytical models, the force output is simulated with respect to the motion of the mover. Numerical result is then obtained to validate the analytical force models. In addition, based on the technology of non-dimensionalization, the mathematical force models are employed to analyze the influence among the structure parameters on the force output and force ripple for design purpose of the tubular linear machines. The study in this paper could contribute to the design analysis and optimization of electromagnetic linear machines with similar poles patterns.

It is a sub-discipline for civil engineering. The importance of the transport engineering in the framework of the profession of civil engineering can be evaluated by the number of divisions of the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), which are directly related to the transport. There are six such divisions (Aerospace; Air Transport, motorways, pipes, watercourses, port, of coastal and ocean and urban transport), which represents one third of the total 18 technical divisions of the ASCE (1987). Humanity is struggling between technological tests of deployment of new types of mild transport for the environment and the need to maintain still in the operation the machines already polluting products in large quantity, cheaper, more convenient economically, that customers have already been accustomed. Transport is at the heart of major cross-cutting issues that are inseparable from issues related to the development and sustainable management of the mobility of goods and people. The automotive sector must meet several challenges to reduce the emission of particulate and gaseous pollutants while limiting the increase in the cost of vehicles. The development of "clean" or "sustainable" vehicles requires the integration of innovative technologies to meet all these requirements. Those all problems need to be addressed by the discipline named Transportation (Transport) Engineering, in view of the constantly improving the quality of transport carried out.

One of the most challenging tasks of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001 is to meet the goal of performing explosive detection system (EDS) screening on 100% of checked baggage by the end of calendar year 2002. Accomplishing this goal within the imposed deadline and within the typically tight space constraints of airport terminals will require significant changes in the way airlines and airports manage passengers and their baggage. One of the up-front keys to integrating 100% checked-baggage screening into airports is to identify realistic throughput rates of various EDS machines available to Transportation Security Administration (TSA) planners. Some of the issues associated with the implementation of EDS equipment are discussed, and an analysis is performed on the throughput of the equipment, using modeling and discrete event-simulation tools. One conclusion of the analysis is that a significant difference exists between the scan rate and the effective throughput rate for the InVision CTX5500, one of the tested EDS machines. This finding is extremely important for TSA planners, who are determining the number of EDS machines to buy and deploy at all 429 U.S. commercial airports. The deployments are based on passenger demand at peak hours of the day. Matching this relatively high-volume operation against the slow processing rate of a standalone EDS will generate large passenger queues unless multiple machines are installed to provide an acceptable level of customer (passenger) service. As a result, the effective throughput rate, not the machine scan rate, should be used in determining the number of EDS machines to install at a particular airport.

This review paper starts with a brief explanation of some ML algorithms commonly used for transportation research, specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Decision Trees (DT), Support Vector Machines (SVM) and Cluster Analysis (CA). Then, these different methodologies used by researchers for modeling travel mode choice are collected and compared with the Multinomial Logit Model (MNL) which is the most commonly-used discrete choice model. Finally, the characterization of ML algorithms is discussed and Random Forest (RF), a variant of Decision Tree algorithms, is presented as the best methodology for modeling travel mode choice.

The authors showed that the cotton-textile cluster efficiency (the capacity of the machine-tractor fleet, cotton yield, the production profitability) largely depended on the use of the optimal number of tractors and agricultural machines. The existing methods (theoretical, graphic, economic and mathematical) were difficult for practical use and did not take into account the specifics of mechanized cotton growing processes. Therefore, it was important to develop a simple normative method for determining the optimal composition of the machine and tractor fleet for clusters, corresponding to the technological map for the production of raw cotton. (Research purpose) To calculate the required amount of agricultural machinery based on the established standards. (Materials and methods) The authors developed an algorithm for determining the standard coefficients of the equipment necessity per 1000 hectares of arable land. These coefficients for each type of equipment were established in the context of technological operations of growing cotton: plowing, soil preparing for sowing, sowing seeds, cultivating the soil between cotton rows, mechanized removal of growth points of the main stems and side branches of plants, defoliation with chemicals, machine harvesting and transportation of harvested cotton – raw. (Results and discussion) The authors proposed the term “model cotton-textile cluster”. They calculated the required amount of equipment for such a cluster with an area of 13,732 hectares. They determined the percentage of the machine and tractor fleet: the share of tractors – 28 percent, cultivators – 22, trailers – 19.8, cotton pickers – 13.8, the rest – 16.4 percent. They emphasized that the machines fleet could expand with the arrival of new modern machines produced by machine-building plants of the republic and imported from foreign countries. (Conclusions) The authors accepted the machine and tractor fleet of the cotton-textile cluster with the number of equipment 1660 units as rational. They proved that it ensured the implementation of all technological operations within agrotechnical terms.

It is often winded and stored in a coil form in order for better transportation. In the recent years, industry 4.0 has been a widely discussed topic in terms of industry manufacturing solutions, the manufacturing is required to be more flexible, efficient and also require more customization. In conventional coil levelling system, the machine settings are often tuned by the experienced technicians with many years of experiences. However, as industry 4.0 focused on information process through real objects, it is required to digitize the experience through deep learning method. Therefore, it is required to be adapted through data information transfer between real world and machines, or even machines to machines. In addition, the data information is often processed and analysed through computers which are often desired to mimic the operations of the experienced machine technicians through machine learning or deep learning methods. This paper is aimed to describe and develop the deep learning algorithm with application based on coil levelling system. Finally, through this paper, design of the deep learning algorithm with application based on coil levelling system is verified.

Mining is widely associated with the use of a variety of mining machines for various duties, such as extraction, loading and transportation of rock. Due to prolonged use of machines, the amount of wear of operating tools and machine parts increases. This problem is especially acute for mining and loading machines used in excavation and reclamation, because the wear rate is increased on those duties. The development of wear process and evaluation of the residual life of operating tools of mining and loading machines is well studied in world practice. However, given the variety of climatic, geological and mining conditions, unique for each mineral deposit, we are facing difficulties in creating a comprehensive model of wear process development. In modern researches on this area such issues as estimation of operating tools residual life during intense wear under extreme conditions of high temperatures and sharp temperature drop are understudied. These conditions are typical for deposits of such minerals as coal and peat, which are especially prone to spontaneous combustion. This review discusses methods for assessing various wear mechanisms and the effect of temperature on the intensity of those processes, as well as methods to determine the residual life of operating tools of mining and loading machines working in high-temperature environment.

The common methods of weft insertion in weaving machines are shuttle, rapier, air jet, water jet and projectile insertion. During weft insertion in the weaving process, a variety of demands are to be fulfilled. Besides transportation of the weft yarn, three of the most relevant demands are energy efficiency, productivity and flexibility. These demands are only partially met by the common methods of weft insertion. This paper describes the investigation of a novel method of weft insertion, which combines the advantages of common insertion methods whilst avoiding their deficits. The developed weft insertion is based on the principle of a magnetic force for the controlled transport of the weft yarn. The new method allows a potential energy saving of about 60% compared to a conventional air jet weaving machine. At the same time, industrially experienced weft insertion rates of about 2000 m/min are within reach.

As one important clue to understand people's behavior and life pattern, transportation mode (such as walking, bicycling, taking bus, driving, taking light-rail or subway, etc.) information has already widely used in mobile recommendation, route planning, social networking and health caring. This paper proposes a transportation mode recognition method using probability fusion of extreme learning machines (ELMs). Two ELM classification models are trained to recognize accelerometer data and Global Positioning System (GPS) data, respectively. Fuzzy output vectors of these two ELMs are transformed into probability vectors and fused to determine the final result. Experimental results verify that the proposed method is effective and can obtain higher recognition accuracy than traditional fusion methods.

The product quality and production efficiency of a flexible manufacturing system have improved effectively by introducing the computer management and the material transportation system. The flexible manufacturing system performance greatly depends on the performance of the material transportation system. As a mobile robot controlled by a central controller, an automated guided vehicle has a strong ability for material transportation. This article studies a dynamic scheduling problem in a shop floor, where machines and automated guided vehicles run at a specified speed and specifies a mathematical model for the dynamic scheduling problem with the goal of makespan minimization. Meanwhile, inspired by the hormone secretion principle of the endocrine system, a bio-inspired scheduling optimization approach is developed to solve the dynamic scheduling problem in the flexible manufacturing system. To verify its practical application, the bio-inspired scheduling optimization approach and other scheduling approaches are tested, and the results illustrate that the bio-inspired scheduling optimization approach has better scheduling performance as well as optimizes the quality of integrated and real-time scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles.

Different jobs call for dissimilar sizes of storing space in the process of transportation. A range of jobs of one customer in the problem have priority to be processed on two identical parallel machines without preemption and then delivered to the customer by two vehicles in batches. For this NP-hard problem, we first prove that it is impossible to have a polynomial heuristic with a worst-case performance ratio bound less than 2 unless P = NP. Thereafter, we develop a polynomial heuristic for this problem, the worst-case ratio of which is bounded by 2.

The article deals with comparison of modes of transportation concerning oversized and heavylift cargo carriage. The peculiarities of each mode of transport directed to determine the rational spheres of its use, but at the same time the development of the geography of maritime trade and intercontinental mainline freight flows has had a significant impact on the increase in the volume of transportation of industrial cargoes, raw materials and high-tech equipment and served as an impetus for the realization of the competitive advantages of the water transport over the other modes of transportation. Assistance in the development of external economic relations and provision of international trade relations as priority components in the list of advantages of which marine transport has in the world economy. Therefore, it becomes obvious that one of the most difficult types of transportation is the carriage of oversized and heavylift cargoes. It is reasonable to note that this concept has differences depending on the type of transport used. There are also various rules of transportation by rail, sea, air and road. Advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of the transportation process of oversized cargo using a particular mode of transport are not very apparent and depend primarily on factors such as indication of dimensions, information on weight, type of cargo, route requirements and time required for transportation, volume of transportation, specific conditions and requirements for carriage. Oversized cargoes in their turn include the cargo units of construction vehicles (excavators, bulldozers, graders, trucks), drilling rigs, earthmoving machines, various machinery and mechanisms for mining industry, steel structures and bridge supports, wind generators, transformers, as well as extra-length equipment, parts and components of plants. Driving is a complex task that requires constant attention, and intelligent transportation systems that support drivers in this task must continually infer driver intentions to produce reasonable, safe responses. In this paper we describe a technique for inferring driver intentions, specifically the intention to change lanes, using support vector machines (SVMs). The technique was applied to experimental data from an instrumented vehicle that included both behavioral data and environmental data. Comparing these results to recent results using a novel “mind-tracking” technique, we found that SVMs outperformed earlier algorithms and proved especially effective in early detection of driver lane changes.

This study addresses a parallel machine production and transportation operations’ scheduling problem with a tight time window associated with the transfer and delivery process. The orders located at the parallel machines need to be delivered to customers by train. Each order must be processed within a limited completion time in order for the product to be matched with the optimal trip to its destination within the delivery period. A mathematical analysis method is used to reveal the impact of tight time windows on the scheduling of production and transportation operations. The order transfer redundancy time and order transfer waiting time are employed to reflect the impact scheduling of production on the transfer process. The order delivery redundancy time and order delivery waiting time are used to describe delivery operations. The goal is to maximize the coordination level of order transfer and delivery, which are reflected in the order transfer time and the order delivery time, respectively. Additionally, a simulated annealing algorithm using the column generation technique was developed to solve this problem. The results show that the use of the system coordination model in this method obviously improves the number of successful transfers and deliveries.

Perhaps no technological innovation has so dominated the second half of the twentieth century as has the introduction of the programmable computer. It is quite difficult if not impossible to imagine how contemporary affairs—in business and science, communications and transportation, governmental and military activities, for example—could be conducted without the use of computing machines, whose principal contribution has been to relieve us of the necessity for certain kinds of mental exertion. The computer revolution has reduced our mental labors by means of these machines, just as the Industrial Revolution reduced our physical labor by means of other machines.
