The fundamentals of kinematics and dynamics of transport piston internal combustion engines made using different layout schemes are presented. Along with the traditional in-line, V-shaped, including oppositional, arrangement of cylinders, schemes with "staggered" arrangement of cylinders in the block at the displaced connecting rod necks of the crankshaft of the engine are considered. The kinematics of the coaxial crank mechanism is considered in detail. The questions of dynamics with reduction of calculated dependences of forces, moments, a choice of a rational order of work of cylinders in relation to the considered kinematic schemes are in detail stated. Considerable attention is paid to the unevenness of the crankshaft rotation speed and engine balancing. The loads on the main and connecting rod bearings of the crankshaft, the knowledge of which is necessary in determining the bearing capacity of bearing units, are also considered. Meets the requirements of the Federal state educational standards of higher education of the last generation. The previous Chapter presented a discussion of the notion of local and global equilibria and shown that these equilibria represent the special forms taken by the distribution function once direct and inverse collisions come into balance. This Chapter provides an elementary introduction to transport phenomena and discusses their intimate relation to non-equilibrium processes at the microscopic scale. In particular it shall deal with the connection between the transport coefficients, such as mass, momentum and energy diffusivity with the molecular mean free path, namely the distance traveled by a representative molecules between two subsequent collisions. The discussion also highlights the fundamental role of inhomogeneity in fueling non-equilibrium processes.

This chapter introduces the Riemann tensor characterizing curved spacetimes, and then the metric tensor, which allows lengths and durations to be defined. As shown in the preceding chapter, ‘absolute, true, and mathematical’ spacetimes representing ‘relative, apparent, and common’ space and time in Einstein’s theory are Riemannian manifolds supplied with a metric and its associated Levi-Civita connection. Moreover, this metric simultaneously describes the coordinate system chosen to reference the events. The chapter begins with a study of connections, parallel transport, and curvature; the commutation of derivatives, torsion, and curvature; geodesic deviation and curvature; the metric tensor and the Levi-Civita connection; and locally inertial frames. Finally, it discusses Riemannian manifolds.

Humane smart cities is a new field of study that addresses what has to be done in cities to make them more livable and more in tune with their citizen’s wishes and needs. The concept is different from the existing smart city concept. The latter focuses on technology as the main driver of change. Humane smart cities use all the power of technology but only in direct connection with citizens’ needs. Boroughs should contain options for living, working, and playing in the same region. Transport should focus on walking, biking, and public transport rather than cars. Cocreation and close interaction between citizens and City Hall should become the norm. In short, the chapter examines how we can keep the good things we like in the city and avoid the bad ones that were brought about by poor planning and wrong models of urban development.

Platformization affects the entire urban transport sector, effectively blurring the division between private and public transport modalities; existing public–private arrangements have started to shift as a result. This chapter analyzes and discusses the emergence of a platform ecology for urban transport, focusing on two central public values: the quality of urban transport and the organization of labor and workers’ rights. Using the prism of platform mechanisms, it analyzes how the sector of urban transport is changing societal organization in various urban areas across the world. Datafication has allowed numerous new actors to offer their bike-, car-, or ride-sharing services online; selection mechanisms help match old and new complementors with passengers. Similarly, new connective platforms are emerging, most prominently transport network companies such as Uber and Lyft that offer public and private transport options, as well as new platforms offering integrated transport services, often referred to as “mobility as a service.”

This chapter presents a discussion on curvilinear coordinates in line with the introduction on Cartesian coordinates in Chapter 1. First, the chapter introduces a new system C of curvilinear coordinates xⁱ = xⁱ(Xj) (also sometimes referred to as Gaussian coordinates), which are nonlinearly related to Cartesian coordinates. It then introduces the components of the covariant derivative, before considering parallel transport in a system of curvilinear coordinates. Next, the chapter shows how connection coefficients of the covariant derivative as well as the Euclidean metric can be related to each other. Finally, this chapter turns to the kinematics of a point particle as well as the divergence and Laplacian of a vector and the Levi-Civita symbol and the volume element.

This article considers the connections between product measures and stationary processes. It first provides an overview of historical facts and relevant terminology, basic concepts and the mathematical approach. In particular, it discusses random measures, the projection-valued spectral measure (PVSM), convolution products, and the association between shift operators and PVSMs. It then presents the main results and their first potential applications, focusing on stochastic integrals, the image of a random measure under measurable mapping, the existence of a transport-type theorem, and the transpose of a continuous homomorphism between groups. It also describes the PVSM associated with a unitary operator, the convolution product of two PVSMs, the unitary operators generated by a PVSM, extension of the convolution product of two PVSMs, an equation where the unknown quantity is a PVSM, and the convolution product of two random measures. The article concludes with an analysis of mathematical developments related to the previous results.

This chapter makes a selection of the issues that are deemed to be the most important from the perspective of transnational commercial law, focusing mainly on the issues related to carrier's liability and transport documents. The main focus is on the transport documents which represent a connecting point between carriage of goods and international trade. Particular attention is given to historical development as it facilitates an understanding of the modern law governing carriage by sea. The chapter provides an overview of international instruments governing carriage by sea also pointing out some discrepancies between these instruments and instruments governing international sales and letters of credit. Selected issues covered by this chapter include identity of the carrier, clean bills of lading, the legal effects of the transfer of negotiable documents, delivery of the goods, and stoppage in transit. The chapter concludes by discussing new types of transport documents, such as sea waybills and electronic transport records.

The field of stochastic processes and random matrix theory (RMT) has been a rapidly evolving subject during the past fifteen years where the continuous development and discovery of new tools, connections, and ideas have led to an avalanche of new results. These breakthroughs have been made possible thanks, to a large extent, to the recent development of various new techniques in RMT. Matrix models have been playing an important role in theoretical physics for a long time and they are currently also a very active domain of research in mathematics. An emblematic example of these recent advances concerns the theory of growth phenomena in the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) universality class where the joint efforts of physicists and mathematicians during the past twenty years have unveiled the beautiful connections between this fundamental problem of statistical mechanics and the theory of random matrices, namely the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue of certain ensemble of random matrices. These chapters not only cover this topic in detail but also present more recent developments that have emerged from these discoveries, for instance in the context of low-dimensional heat transport (on the physics side) or in the context of integrable probability (on the mathematical side).

Electromagnetic Radiation is a graduate level book on classical electrodynamics with a strong emphasis on radiation. This book is meant to quickly and efficiently introduce students to the electromagnetic radiation science essential to a practicing physicist. While a major focus is on light and its interactions, topics in radio frequency radiation, x-rays, and beyond are also treated. Special emphasis is placed on applications, with many exercises and homework problems. The format of the book is designed to convey the basic concepts of a topic in the main central text in the book in a mathematically rigorous manner, but with detailed derivations routinely relegated to the accompanying side notes or end of chapter “Discussions.” The book is composed of four parts: Part I is a review of basic E&M, and assumes the reader has a had a good upper division undergraduate course, and while it offers a concise review of topics covered in such a course, it does not treat any given topic in detail; specifically electro- and magnetostatics. Part II addresses the origins of radiation in terms of time variations of charge and current densities within the source, and presents Jefimenko’s field equations as derived from retarded potentials. Part III introduces special relativity and its deep connection to Maxwell’s equations, together with an introduction to relativistic field theory, as well as the relativistic treatment of radiation from an arbitrarily accelerating charge. A highlight of this part is a chapter on the still partially unresolved problem of radiation reaction on an accelerating charge. Part IV treats the practical problems of electromagnetic radiation interacting with matter, with chapters on energy transport, scattering, diffraction and finally an illuminating, application-oriented treatment of fields in confined environments.

The EU natural gas system has been developed since the 1960s, following discovery of the Groningen gas field. Climate change and security of supply challenges are affecting the natural gas market, provoking greener innovation including the introduction of renewable gases, such as biogas, which needs to be converted to biomethane (natural gas quality) before injection into the natural gas system and transported cross-border. This chapter examines the legal framework on EU and national level. Special attention is paid to: the extent to which biogas/biomethane is considered a renewable energy source; safety and quality standards; access and connection rules. National gas quality standards may, however, prove to be an obstacle for transportation cross-border. In addition, there is a trend towards cross-border contractual trade in biomethane and slowly emerging organizational developments facilitating cross-border trade in biomethane.

A graduate-level text, Semiconductor physics: Principles, theory and nanoscale covers the central topics of the field, together with advanced topics related to the nanoscale and to quantum confinement, and integrates the understanding of important attributes that go beyond the conventional solid-state and statistical expositions. Topics include the behavior of electrons, phonons and photons; the energy and entropic foundations; bandstructures and their calculation; the behavior at surfaces and interfaces, including those of heterostructures and their heterojunctions; deep and shallow point perturbations; scattering and transport, including mesoscale behavior, using the evolution and dynamics of classical and quantum ensembles from a probabilistic viewpoint; energy transformations; light-matter interactions; the role of causality; the connections between the quantum and the macroscale that lead to linear responses and Onsager relationships; fluctuations and their connections to dissipation, noise and other attributes; stress and strain effects in semiconductors; properties of high permittivity dielectrics; and remote interaction processes. The final chapter discusses the special consequences of the principles to the variety of properties (consequences of selection rules, for example) under quantum-confined conditions and in monolayer semiconductor systems. The text also bring together short appendices discussing transform theorems integral to this study, the nature of random processes, oscillator strength, A and B coefficients and other topics important for understanding semiconductor behavior. The text brings the study of semiconductor physics to the same level as that of the advanced texts of solid state by focusing exclusively on the equilibrium and off-equilibrium behaviors important in semiconductors.

This chapter examines ferocious or combat dance in Circum-Caribbean history. It documents martial art forms and stick-fighting dances on the African continent and Diaspora combat dances that are similar to Brazilian capoeira and maculelê. It also proposes the inclusion of armed and unarmed combat rituals within Caribbean dance categories. The chapter begins with a discussion of the African legacies of ferocious dance, focusing on the importance of martial arts to the societies of colonial Angola and its connection to Caribbean combat dances, as well as the ways in which martial techniques were transported within enslaved bodies to parts of the African Diaspora. It then describes examples of Circum-Caribbean combat dance games, including ladja and danmyé in Martinique, juego de maní in Cuba, kalinda in Trinidad and Tobago, and tambú and kokomakaku in Curaçao. The chapter concludes with an assessment of lessons imparted by combat dance.

Connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Mediterranean Sea has been for millennia the place where religions, economies, and political systems met, clashed, influenced and absorbed one another. In this brilliant and expansive book, David Abulafia offers a fresh perspective by focusing on the sea itself: its practical importance for transport and sustenance; its dynamic role in the rise and fall of empires; and the remarkable cast of characters-sailors, merchants, migrants, pirates, pilgrims-who have crossed and re-crossed it. Ranging from prehistory to the 21st century, The Great Sea is above all a history of human interaction. Interweaving major political and naval developments with the ebb and flow of trade, Abulafia explores how commercial competition in the Mediterranean created both rivalries and partnerships, with merchants acting as intermediaries between cultures, trading goods that were as exotic on one side of the sea as they were commonplace on the other. He stresses the remarkable ability of Mediterranean cultures to uphold the civilizing ideal of convivencia, "living together." Now available in paperback, The Great Sea is the definitive account of perhaps the most vibrant theater of human interaction in history.

The Earth’s climate changes naturally on all timescales. At the short end of the spectrum—hours or days—it is affected by sudden events such as volcanic eruptions, which raise the atmospheric temperature directly, and also indirectly, by the addition of greenhouse gases such as water vapour and carbon dioxide. Over years, centuries, and millennia, climate is influenced by changes in ocean currents that, ultimately, are controlled by the geography of ocean basins. On scales of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years, the Earth’s orbit around the Sun is the crucial influence, producing glaciations and interglacials, such as the one in which we live. Longer still, tectonic forces operate over millions of years to produce mountain ranges like the Himalayas and continental rifts such as that in East Africa, which profoundly affect atmospheric circulation, creating deserts and monsoons. Over tens to hundreds of millions of years, plate movements gradually rearrange the continents, creating new oceans and destroying old ones, making and breaking land and sea connections, assembling and disassembling supercontinents, resulting in fundamental changes in heat transport by ocean currents. Finally, over the very long term—billions of years—climate reflects slow changes in solar luminosity as the planet heads towards a fiery Armageddon. All but two of these controls are direct or indirect consequences of plate tectonics.
