Philosophical translation between "linguistic violence" and translative hermeneutics. Translational considerations from the perspective of the translation(s) of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant The establishment of translatology as a scientific discipline is a late phenomenon to which not only linguistics but also the philosophy of language has contributed significantly. Although the considerations of Schleiermacher, Ricoeur, Derrida, Balibar, Cassin and other philosophers are very stimulating for the examination of the translation problematics, they do not offer a particular translation theory of philosophical texts. Most of their works are of little help in practice when it comes to translating a complicated philosophical text. That is why I will take in this paper the opposite path and start from my own experience as a translator of philosophical literature into Bulgarian and, more concretely, from my translation of Jean-Paul Sartre's L'être et le néant. On the base of this key work of contemporary philosophy and its translations into different languages, I will address the difficulties and the specifics of philosophical translation, discuss various translation methods, and argue several theses, which could serve as impulses for a further development of translation theory and translation practice in the field of philosophy.

Translation Epistemology: Implied and Expressed The starting point for determining the nature of translation epistemology, which develops in parallel to the philosophical theory of cognition, is to distinguish an internal epistemology that permeates the field of translation communication – one of the varieties of verbal textual communication. Its goals are cognitive and exploratory. Cognition refers to the essence of translational communication, exploration refers to the forms differentiating this type of communication. I define translation as the interlingual re-editing of a ready text; and in the space of textual communication it generates seven fundamental components: 1. foreign-language originals or foreign-language translations, 2. mental translations (paratexts), 3. complete translations, 4. fragmentary translations, 5. translation-like structures, 6. translational reflections, and 7. translational fantasies. In this area the epistemology of translation is equivalent to the documentalist’s epistemology. For the translator, any textual structure, subjected to interlingual re-editing, becomes a document as well as a task. In the process of translation, cognitive activity is intertwined with praxeological one, the acquisition of knowledge is combined with the improvement of the craft of translation, the concurrence of cognition and skill prevails. The whole epistemological activity of translators and translation scholars, implicit and explicit, consists in the fact that the translator repeats the hypothetical path of the original author, while the translation scholar repeats bot the hypothetical path of the translator and the hypothetical path of the original author.

Translating technical terminologies that belong to special field is challenging, especially to those who are not mastering the field. In translating the immigration terminologies found in the regulations concerning immigration, the translators applied various translation procedures in order to maintain the meaning. The aim of this research is to identify the translation procedures applied in translating the immigration terminologies found in the data source. The data were collected from Undang-Undang Nomor 6 Tahun 2011 tentang Keimigrasian, Peraturan Presiden Republik Indonesia Nomor 104 Tahun 2015 tentang Perubahan Atas Peraturan Presiden Nomor 69 Tahun 2015 tentang Bebas Visa Kunjungan, along with their translations. Qualitative research approach is applied in this writing. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory of translation proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. The result of the research showed that in translating the immigration terminologies found in the data source, the translator applied 5 (five) out of 7 (seven) translation procedures. These 5 (five) procedures are borrowing, calque, literal, transposition, and modulation. The other 2 (two) translation procedures that were not applied are equivalence and adaptation.

This paper suggests how translation processes can be integrated in qualitative interviews in multi-lingual research fields. While theoretical and methodological problems of language and translation have been thoroughly reflected upon from different perspectives in qualitative research, the literature provides little guidance for the practical gathering and handling of multi-lingual material. As a contribution to filling this gap, the paper suggests a systematic, comparative combination of oral and written translations of interviews, which would serve both a diagnostic and a heuristic function. Based on an ethnographic study in Zambian refugee camps and conceptual distinctions between schemes of translation, I identify, in oral translations, five forms of translator’s decision to depart from the literal wording in favor of a pragmatic translation intended to aid continuation of the conversation. As an important element of the suggested procedure, the comparison of the translation modes is systematically discussed with the translating research assistant, leading not only to reflection on further translation practices, but, most importantly, to an awareness of important substantial aspects of the material. This heuristic function of the comparative combination of translation modes thus leads to an enhancement of the research process.

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to shed some light onto contemporary translation didactics as a “virgin” field of applied TS that cannot be successfully developed without a new, multidisciplinary approach that would put forward the specificity of translator training as a distinct, socially valuable practice. We hypothesize that as socially-specific, practice-oriented products of the interaction between the systems of translation and of professional education, translator training programs are dependent on the social perception of translating activity as well as on the degree of its institutionalization as a profession. Given that contemporary translation and interpretation practices, as well as translator training programs, are limited to local manifestations, the social and cultural discrepancies impede any comparativism in this field of applied TS. However, in applying a sociological approach to translator training, we propose a methodological framework for a sociologically-informed comparative analysis that would lift the cultural and institutional barriers that until now have been distorting our vision of translation as a global social practice and have thus prevented us from conducting comparative analysis of a wide variety of translational phenomena as manifested in different locales, conceived in terms of both time and space. In order to illustrate our propositions, we present the reader with a case study of the most prototypical translator training programs in Canada and Russia – countries that, due to the differences in the theoretical, practical and didactic setup of their respective fields of translation and interpretation, offer appropriate support for our comparative methodology.

This study examines the English and Spanish translations of metaphors in Xi Jinping: The Governance of China (I-III) within the theoretical framework of Translator Behavior Criticism. In the description of the translators’ behavioral tendencies and diachronic changes, differences are identified between the English and Spanish translating teams with regards to their philosophy of translation, which leads to an analysis of the social motivations of the translators’ behaviors within the field of political discourse translation in China. The following findings have been derived: 1) The Spanish translation is faithful to the form of expression of the ST, which suggests a translators’ behavioral tendency towards the “truth-seeking” principle. The English translation is freer since it upholds a semantic rather than formal equivalence to the ST, suggesting that the English translating team is more oriented towards the “utility-attaining” principle than their Spanish counterparts. 2) Observed from a diachronic perspective, the English translating team always maintained a balance between the two above-mentioned principles in translating the metaphors and their “truth-seeking” and “utility-attaining” behaviors were both enhanced in their translation of the third volume. The Spanish translating team always tilted towards the “truth-seeking” principle, demonstrating just a slight increase of “utility-attaining” behavior throughout their translation of the three volumes. 3) There is an evident difference between the English and Spanish translating teams regarding their “philosophy of faithfulness”. A “semantic” faithfulness with pragmatic concerns advocated by the former team is becoming the mainstream norm governing the current field of political discourse translation in China.

Financial Text Translation Nowadays, specialized translation has acquired a great importance in different fields, particularly in the domain of affairs and finance. The domains covered by financial translation are various. They range from simple economic research to the most complex accounting studies. It is thus necessary for this translation to have a deep knowledge of the issue to be tackled, and a total mastery of the mechanisms of finance. Translating the financial terminology is the greatest obstacle that a translator meets in his work. This is due to its technical nature as well as the different neologisms regularly used in the language of finance. The most important element of this piece of work is the importance of research in both documentation and terminology. If these two elements are properly carried out, they allow the translator to translate any specialized text in any field without necessarily being a specialist in the domain in question. Nevertheless, he must usually carry out continuous research and have a universal knowledge. He also has to enrich and update his databases and terminological files to make of his translation a driving force for the coming translations.

Translation goes through other fields and goes beyond the textual level. The activity of translating brings aspects that permeate cognitive, social, and cultural aspects. In this article, we apply sociology to Translation Studies by adopting a Bourdieu-based approach to show the structure and the interactions among social agents in the field of translation and in the fields where technical-specialized translators find themselves when developing a translation project. From a practical experience of a professional translator with the translation of a web-based educational platform into Portuguese, we show how important it is for translators to be aware of the structure, norms, and interactions in that specific field so they can draw up their strategies and choices to succeed in their search for recognition and symbolic capital. First, we review key concepts of Bourdieu’s theory of practice and then we advance in the discussion about the dynamics among the agents engaged in the translation project and language implications from a sociological perspective.

Between Heaven and Hell: Roman Kołakowski’s Poetry and His Translations of The Tiger Lillies Songs of The Tiger Lillies, a “punk cabaret” group from London, entered the Polish- speaking culture mostly through the translations by Roman Kołakowski. Translation formed just one of many fields of artistic activity of Kołakowski, who was also a poet, a songwriter, a performer, and a theatre director. There exists, however, a striking contrast between the style of the Kołakowski’s own oeuvre and his translation choices. His poetry is mostly religious, patriotic, marked by a solemn tone and elevated register, while The Tiger Lillies delight in ridicule, irony, and perversion, mocking religion in an almost blasphemous way. The paper is an attempt at analysing this contrast and searching for its assumed sources. The target texts are found to be marked by significant semantic and stylistic modifications when compared to the original songs. Amplification of religious tropes and of negative views on modern society is identified as the main form of the translator’s interventions. Based on the comparison of Kołakowski’s translations with his own poetry, it is posited that their ostensible discrepancy may be explained by perceiving the translations as a subsidiary field of artistic expression, where the translator pursues his interests in grimmer aspects of morality and society, expressing them in a form that would not be coherent with his own poetry. Consequently, Kołakowski’s translations of The Tiger Lillies’ songs are considered appropriations in a sense that the translational choices are directed by the translator’s own interests, ideological stance, and sensibilities, rather than by any attempted equivalence with the source texts. It is to be hoped that the paper will form an in itation to further investigations of translational agency in the field of song translation.

Abstract Regardless of the approach one uses in the study of translating and translations, it remains necessary to delimit the legitimate field of concern. I.e. translations must be identified and described sui generis as the results of a text-processing activity. From the linguistic and text-theoretical perspective this objective is fulfilled by the concept of equivalence; a translation is defined as a secondary text that stands in an equivalence relation to a primary text. The range of the equivalence-oriented approach and the possibilities it offers for systematic description and explanation of translational phenomena are, however, limited. Its problems and limitations become apparent not only in the context of historical translation research, but also whenever interest focusses upon the text-productive—i.e. ultimately creative—aspect of translation, as opposed to its reproductive aspect, i.e. the linguistic-textual relationships between languages and texts as these are deduced from regularities.

Machine translation has the potential to become an indispensable assistant in the hands of a translator. This article discusses machine translation of expressive means, namely metaphors. The study is illustrated with examples and a comparative analysis of the translation of metaphorical units is carried out, the classification of metaphors is identified and an analysis is carried out with which means of expression the translator is able to cope with. The difficulties of translating metaphors are analyzed.

The article is devoted to the study of the impact of using hybrid machine translation engines (Onlinedoctranslator and DeepL Translate) on the quality of translation of texts in the field of ornamental horticulture. Within our experimental study the quality of translation was determined by the number of errors and quality of rendering horticultural terminology. Machine translation is gradually evolving, the market is extremely active and proposes many new engines uniting most promising algorithms, but it is important to determine the effectiveness of hybrid machine translation engines in translating texts of various fields, especially in the field of ornamental horticulture. In the course of conducting our research, we formulated a research hypothesis, selected a text in the field of ornamental horticulture rich in horticultural terminology and consisting of more than 30.000 printed characters without spaces, compiled a bilingual glossary based on the selected text, consisting of 200 terminological units, selected machine translation engines (Onlinedoctranslator and DeepL) and the procedure of evaluating errors, having distinguished three main types of mistakes, analyzed translated texts in terms of general quality and in terms of transferring horticultural terminology, processed the experimental data, represented the results in the form of tables providing an expert assessment of the empirical data and formulated conclusions. In the process of conducting the experiment, the hypothesis formulated at the beginning of the research was confirmed: different hybrid machine translation engines offer translations of the same text in the field of ornamental horticulture of varying quality, which we tracked by determining the overall percentage of errors in each translation performed, as well as by calculating the percentage of correct transferring of horticultural terminology. According to both indicators, DeepL showed the best results, and therefore it is advisable to recommend it for translating texts in the field of ornamental horticulture.

Abstract This article aims to investigate the relationship between paratexts and the translation product with a case study of Lolita translations in China. Since Lolita has been one of the most frequently retranslated literary works in China over the past three decades, it can serve as a bellwether of the changes that have taken place in the translation field as well as those in the social, cultural and historical context. Therefore, a comparative study of the paratextual elements of Lolita translations acts as a reflection of the negotiations between the translation activity and the changing socio-political context. The analysis of paratexts locates translation as a social activity in which many agents are involved other than simply the translator and the source text. Through their organic integration with the translation products, the paratextual elements, functioning as genre indicators, work to promote the translation while potentially predicting its target readership. In the translation and retranslation of the same source text, a discussion of the paratexts may provide new insights into understanding the relationship between translations and retranslations as well as the evolution of the translation field in relation to Chinese society.

The article discusses the peculiarities of the terminology of traditional Chinese medicine and the problems that arise during its translation into Russian. The author shows that the most common model for creating terms in this field is represented by two-word and four-word phrases. It is noted that their translation cannot be limited to traditional methods. It is asserted that the conceptual meaning of terms in traditional Chinese medicine has historical, philosophical, and humanistic foundations. It is emphasized that the translation of terms in traditional Chinese medicine should include issues of cultural communication. Examples of successful and unsuccessful translations of terms into Russian demonstrate that the rich cultural subtext contained in them determines the difficulty of their perception. The reasons for incorrect translations of terms in traditional Chinese medicine are indicated, among which their non-equivalence, historical-cultural context, differences in content when there are differences in expression, etc. It is concluded that an important issue in translating terms in traditional Chinese medicine is the need to formulate unified rules for translating texts in this field into a foreign language.

This study examines the advancements in AI-driven machine translation, specifically focusing on the accurate translation of Arabic colloquial expressions. It aims to assess the progress made by Large Language Models, such as Bing AI Chat, compared to traditional machine translation systems. By focusing on colloquial expressions, this research aims to shed light on the challenges and opportunities for improvement in machine translation systems, particularly when dealing with the complexities of translating informal Arabic utterances. Building upon At-tall’s 2019 thesis, which compared Google Translate and human translators, the study employs the same Arabic sentences as a test dataset, allowing for a direct comparison between 2019 translations and those produced by current machine translation tools. The findings indicate limited improvement in Google Translate since 2019, with Bing Translator exhibiting a similar level of translation accuracy. In contrast, Bing AI Chat consistently outperformed the other systems, showcasing the potential of Large Language Model machine translation. Notably, Bing AI Chat provided interpretations and valuable comments on the tested Arabic phrases, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the intended meaning. This study contributes significantly to the field of machine translation by providing evidence of the potential of Large Language Model systems in producing more accurate Arabic-English translations. It emphasizes the advantage of Large Language Models in dealing with non-standard Arabic expressions, encouraging further exploration of Large Language Model-powered approaches in machine translation. It is based on the data available in periodicals, conference proceedings and other publications issued by two major translator associations and book-length publications on translation theory in Serbia during this period. The analysis presents the events, topics, participants and publications on translation as well as the role of state ideology in the promotion of translation activities. This paper examines the evolution of translator Allan Barr's style and methodology. Regarded as the primary English translator of Yu Hua's works for fifteen years, Barr's corpus is examined in order to catalogue the development of his translation style. This corpus consists of Yu Hua’s Huanghun li de Nanhai and Siyue Sanri Shijian and their translations Boy in the Twilight: Stories of Hidden China (2003) and The April 3rd Incident: Stories (2018). The mixed-methods approach was applied to analyze Barr's idiosyncrasies in translating Direct Speech (DS) presentations at different stages of his career using the revised S-type model. A quantitative analysis identified a translator’s changing preferences in translating DS. The subsequent qualitative analysis addressed the translation strategies of (Free) Direct Speech and Barr's preferred position of report clauses at different points in time. The results suggest that Barr's translation styles were more influenced by his assumptions and attitude towards the implicit target readers and then dominated his stylistic choices, leading him to be more loyal to the source text and the author in his later translation and more inclined to present the literary world of the source text with less interference and interpretation by the translator. The implications proposed that the development of the translator’s style may be due to the promotion of the author’s familiarity with the literary field of the target language, the influence of the norms of the source language in which the translator is immersed in translation practice, and his increasing knowledge of style.

The study of literature in translation has been a key component of Translation Studies since the field emerged more than half a century prior. One of the defining moments in the field was a shift in focus from comparing a source text with its translation to looking at the translation in a target culture. Another development that is growing in importance is a focus on the translator and how other individuals may use their agency to influence the final textual product as well as its packaging and reception. To this end, the theoretical concepts of Pierre Bourdieu, particularly that of the habitus of the translator, and that of the Actor-network Theory have been applied to analyze and trace the development of translation products, the individuals involved the process, as well as the discourse which surrounds the reception of translations. This article sets out to apply these theoretical and methodological apparatus to the early titles of Japanese literature in English translation which appeared in the 1950s. The findings suggest the agency construct is supported by the concept of habitus and complimented by Actor-Network Theory. The articulation of new data provided by publisher archives in turn helps to clarify the historical place of these translations.

Like the Bible, the Dào Dé Jīng is one of the most translated classics with worldwide influence, and its translation sets a good example in cross-cultural communication. Among the Dào Dé Jīng’s translations, the number of German versions is second only to the English ones. Since its introduction to the German regions, the Dào Dé Jīng has been popular among German-speaking scholars and readers, casting profound and far-reaching influences in various fields. Based on the theory of the conceptual metaphor field, the article explores the relationship between Dào 道 (way or Dao) and Xiàng 象 (Symbolic Imagery, images) in the Dào Dé Jīng and builds the mapping from Xiàng to Dào. In the Dào Dé Jīng, Laozi uses images (Xiàng 象) as collective concepts to illustrate his Dào and make his idea better understood. Thus, this article focuses on the translation of different key images (Xiàng) in six representative German translations of the Dào Dé Jīng and summarizes three main translation techniques used in translating Xiàng: shifting, conversion, and concealment. After balancing the cultural differences and translation requirements, the German translators take these techniques to translate Xiàng and make relevant concepts more understandable and acceptable for German readers, which facilitates the spread of the Dào Dé Jīng in the German regions. Inspired by the German translation of Xiàng, contemporary translators shall balance the cultural differences between the source language and target language, choose the appropriate translation strategies and techniques in translating ancient Chinese classics and make their translation a bridge between different civilizations.

Translation activities are not isolated, and an increasing number of researchers have applied sociological theories to translation studies, which contributions to interdisciplinary research in translation. Luotuo Xiangzi, written by Lao She, is one of the best modern Chinese novels. Its four English translation versions and translation activities that span decades have deeply interacting with various parts of society. Based on Bourdieu’s sociological theories of the “field”, “capital” and “habitus”, this case study of the English translations of Luotuo Xiangzi explored the relationship and interaction between the translator and other participants (participating groups) in the translation activity. It was discovered that the translation activity could reveal the translator’s habitus and be greatly influenced by interactions with various fields of society and by the capital engaged in the translation activity of Luotuo Xiangzi, providing proof of the explanatory and guiding power of Bourdieu’s sociological theory in translation studies. This paper tries to enrich the interdisciplinary research of sociology and translation and offers additional references for the translation and global dissemination of translated literature, particularly for Chinese literature.

The predominant ideal of translating verse and prose has been that of artistic translation, especially since the end of the 1920s. On the other hand, this general principle can be shown to have had somewhat differing emphases depending on the field of application as well as time period, ranging from the mostly form-oriented to mostly content-oriented translation.

The article summarizes and exposes its particularities and carries an overview of its place in Bulgaria today, relying on statistical data, based on which it derives and analyses several trends. The subsequent analysis of the existing imbalances and some relatively unfavourable trends in the translation of humanities in Bulgaria takes into account the objective market circumstances, focuses more on the human factor and especially on the central figure of the translator, and points out as an important problem the practical lack of theory and criticism of the translation in the field of humanities. A multidisciplinary approach is suggested to support this highly specialised translation, as well as specific actions at all stages of the transfer of scientific knowledge through translation, with an explicit emphasis on translators’ training and the development of adequate criticism of translations. The practical implementation of this approach could form the basis of a long-term strategy to support and develop the translation in the field of humanities in Bulgaria. AbstractThe article is trying to highlight the major skills of a present-day translator, without which failure is assured. Although we start with general (classical) requirements, particular ones will be discussed, such as the gradual shift from PRAT (paper-and-rubber-assisted translation) to CAT (computer-assisted translation). We argue that professional translators in the 21st century must make use of personal computers and specific software designed to support translation: translation memories (TM), term bases (TB) and translation environments (TE), which already have built-in machine translation (MT) possibility as well. This shift also entails that translators have to deal with further impediments as well: the so-called "text"-to-be-translated has changed to "whatever"-to-be-translated. We argue that would-be translators are hardly ever prepared for this new type of multimedia challenge (e.g. surtitles), thus leaving room for technical experts to discover their skills in translating multimedia. It is our belief that managing translations is directly linked with managing translators, and there are more traps for translators in the 21st century than a layman would think. Consequently, we would like to offer some tips how to build and acquire translation databases in order to catch up with the 21st century rush hour in the field of translation.

The authors of the article discuss the problem of translating an onomastic metaphor in humorous discourse, relying on the results of research in the field of proper name theory, cognitive metaphor theory, comic theory, discourse theory, and the theory of harmonious translation space, which are the research methodology. The purpose of the work is to show that the metaphorical onym, as a complex dynamic transformation of a proper name-anthroponym, has a high cultural potential, and in humorous discourse acquires a pragmatic humorous effect, reflecting the author's intention. The material of the work was the literary texts of A.P. Chekhov in Russian and their translations into Chinese, as well as literary texts in English by P.G. Woodhouse and their translations into Russian and Chinese. The choice of these authors is due to their belonging to the same historical era - the beginning of the twentieth century. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that the semantics of Chinese anthroponyms differs significantly from the semantics of English and Russian-language proper names-anthroponyms, which should be known and taken into account by the translator in the process of translating metaphorical meanings into Chinese in order to ensure mutual understanding of representatives of different linguistic cultures. Translations into Chinese are ongoing. Linguistic and translation analysis consists in identifying the level of harmony of translations of an onomastic metaphor, correlated with the nature of the reconstruction of metaphorical meanings and the humorous effect of the original. Such a translation is recognized as harmonious, in which there is a remetaphorization of the onomastic metaphor, accompanied by synergy - an increment of new meanings acceptable to the host culture.

Background. Songs in the field of film publishing play an important role in the understanding of the main characters’ emotions and thoughts, conveying a specific atmosphere, or even serving as a substitute for dialogues and words. But in most cases, songs are not translated into other languages during the release of the film, forgetting that the song lyrics can play a key role or even carry the inherent opinion of the producer. Due to the great need for film art now, its development in society and further prospects, there is a problem with the appropriate translation of songs and with insufficient research and materials on this topic. The purpose of the article is to identify difficulties in translating songs and analyze translation transformations using the example of the lyrics of the song «How Far I'll Go» from the cartoon «Moana». Methods. Classification and comparative method for determining difficulties in translation; generalization of the received information; practical analysis of translation methods on the example of a song from the cartoon «Moana»; synthesis of translation difficulties with translation methods and classification of ways to translate a song in films and cartoons. Results. The most common difficulties in translating songs are lexical difficulties: correctly understand the latest words in the original language, choose a synonymous word or meaning from the translation language, and determine the correct interpretation of texts with abbreviations. It is also important to preserve the main meaning of the text, its rhyming, and take into account cultural features when translating a song. The translator also needs to have knowledge in the field of poetics and music to accurately translate the song text while preserving the opinion of the author of the original song and the musical drawing. Insufficient theoretical base forces translators not to translate the original song and leave it in the original, which leaves the viewer without understanding the song and its role in the film, which also causes the loss of emphasizing the feelings of the scenes and the main idea of the author. Discussion. Studying this topic of translating songs from cartoons allows us to conclude that songs are an important part of cinema, which studios in most cases neglect when translating films into other languages. Only knowledge of the theory of Translation Studies is not enough for translators for professional and adequate translation, so there is a problem of insufficient number of professional and qualified translators. The study also found that lexical constructions are used by translators quite often when translating songs and are the main translation tool. The need for knowledge of ways and methods of correct translation of song texts in the film industry requires scientists and researchers to draw attention to this problem and engage in active research in the direction of song translation, which means a great prospect for creating a new direction in the field of translation studies due to the demand and necessity of song translations in the film industry.

The article discusses the challenges and strategies of translating doublets into Ukrainian based on German and English legal texts. A corpus-based approach is used to analyze legal texts in two languages to identify the most common types of doublets and determine the most effective ways to translate them into Ukrainian. The study shows that translating doublets in legal texts is a complex process that requires a deep understanding of the source and target languages, as well as the context in which the doublets are used. The results of the study demonstrate that there are several strategies that translators can use to translate doublets effectively. For example, using synonyms, paraphrasing, and omitting one of the components of a doublet pair. These strategies proved to be especially useful when translating doublets from the legal field, as translation in this field requires accuracy and clarity. The practical results of this study are important for translators working with legal texts in German, English and Ukrainian. The study provides valuable insights into the most effective strategies for translating doublets and emphasizes the importance of a thorough understanding of the context in which doublets are used. Moreover, the article has important theoretical importance for researchers in the fields of translation studies, terminology, general and comparative linguistics. The study of doublets on the example of legal texts helps to better understand the mechanisms of translation and the peculiarities of language. The results of the research can be used in further studies of the translation process, including the analysis of other language phenomena and contexts. In particular, it has been found that translating doublets is a complex process that requires a translator to have a deep knowledge of both languages and clear understanding of the context in which doublets are used. In general, the study shows that translation of doublets is an important part of the translation process and requires the translator to be able to follow effective strategies and identify ways to translate doublets.

Arabic poetry has long taken precedence over other literary forms. It is the oldest form of literature known in the Arabic language, dating back to year 400 A.D. In the context of translation, poetry poses a few daunting hurdles in attempting to reach equally metaphorical meanings in the target language. This article seeks to illustrate the cultural problems witnessed in translating culture-bound metaphor. For this purpose, poetry by prominent Arab poet Nizar Qabbani is the main reference and the selected case study in the article for the poet’s place and contribution in Arabic poetry. The theoretical framework adopts two translation models— Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Den Broeck’s literal, paraphrase and substitution. In addition to illustrating difficulties emanating from translating culture-bound metaphor, the article will present a comparative analysis of two translations of one poetic text, thereby hopefully serving as a valuable contribution to the area of cultural metaphor translation by providing a range of translation possibilities starting from Dynamic Equivalence or idiomatic translation and continuing through literal and semantic translations. In doing so, the article has tackled strategies in the field of cultural metaphor translation, which will hopefully lead to further research.

Republican China (1912–49) saw the rise and fall of a sub-field of source cultureinitiated foreign language translations of Chinese literature targeted at both expatriate and domestic audiences in China. This unique translation phenomenon, which challenges Gideon Toury’s generally held assumption that “translations are facts of target cultures,” has hitherto been under-researched in and outside of China. This paper presents the findings of a case study of George Kin Leung’s English translation of Lu Xun’s fictional masterpiece A Q Zhengzhuan (The True Story of Ah Q). Four socio-cultural factors which engendered the emergence of this sub-field in the early Republican years are analyzed. Inspired by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the field of cultural production, this putative sub-field of restricted production is interpreted as functioning primarily on the basis of the accumulation of symbolic capital. Leung’s participation in the dynamics of this historical field is examined by tracing his professional trajectory, followed by an analysis of his motivation for translating A Q Zhengzhuan – to make a name for himself or to accumulate symbolic capital in the field. It is then found through text analysis that Leung’s version shows a combination of overall literalness and occasional license. A tentative explanation is sought by drawing on André Lefevere’s theory of rewriting. The primary conclusion is that Leung’s literalistic approach to translation was dictated by the intended readership and the translation norm (i.e., literal translation) that prevailed in 1920s’ China, while the liberties Leung took with the original text reveal the influence ofhis ideology, poetics and aesthetics.

The result of the analysis shows that the translation results are different, both from the style of language and the choice of words used by each machine translation tool. Thus, directly or indirectly, whether consciously or not, each translation machine carries its characteristics. Machine translation technology cannot be separated from the active role of humans. In other words, it will always be the best choice for users to rely on expert translation rather than machine translation. But no machine translator can be as accurate as human skills in producing translation products. In particular, the field of translation is also concerned with machine translation to support the performance of translators in analyzing the diction used as an element of language. In this regard, it needs to be underlined that the existence of machine translation is an additional facility in the world of translation, not as the main means of translation because the sophistication of the machine will not be able to match the flexibility of the human brain's cognitive abilities in adjusting the translation results according to the existing context. Accurate translation is sometimes subjective, relatively often temporal. Therefore, it is permissible for translating by more than one machine translator

The most common type is the multi-field dictionary covering several related subject fields; however, multi-field dictionaries treat one or few fields extensively thereby neglecting other fields in contrast to single-field and sub-field dictionaries. Furthermore, recent research shows that economic translation is not limited to terms so lexicographers who identify and analyse the needs of translators, usage situations and stages in translating economic texts will have a sound basis for designing their lexicographic tools. The function theory allows lexicographers to study these basics so that they can offer translation tools to the domain of economics. Dictionaries should include data about terms, their grammatical properties, and their combinatorial potential as well as language varieties such as British, American and international English to indicate syntactic options and restrictions on language use. Secondly, translators need to know the meaning of domain-specific terms to properly understand the differences in the structure of the domains in the cultures involved. Finally, pragmatic data will tell authors and translators how textual resources are conventionally used and what is textually appropriate in communication within the fi eld of economics. The focus will mainly be on translations between Danish and English.</p>

With the advent of the neural paradigm, machine translation has made another leap in quality. As a result, its use by trainee translators has increased considerably, which cannot be disregarded in translation pedagogy. However, since legal texts have features that pose major challenges to machine translation, the question arises as to what extent machine translation is now capable of translating legal texts or at least certain types of legal text into another legal language well enough so that the post-editing effort is limited, and, consequently, whether a targeted use in translation pedagogy can be considered. In order to answer this question, DeepL Translator, a machine translation system, and MateCat, a CAT system that integrates machine translation, were tested. The test, undertaken at different times and without specific translation memories, provided for the translation of several legal texts of different types utilising both systems, and was followed by systematisation of errors and evaluation of translation results. The evaluation was carried out according to the following criteria: 1) comprehensibility and meaningfulness of the target text; and 2) correspondence between source and target text in consideration of the specific translation situation. Overall, the results are considered insufficient to give post-editing of machine-translated legal texts a bigger place in translation pedagogy. As the evaluation of the correspondence between source and target text was fundamentally worse than with regard to the meaningfulness of the target text, translation pedagogy should respond by raising awareness about differences between machine translation output and human translation in this field, and by improving translation approach and strengthening legal expertise.

The article focuses on the development of translation-oriented terminology as a separate convergent field of philological science in Ukraine, the actual date of which can rightly be considered 2020. It is stated that the impetus for its emergence was the limited reproductive (technique/transformational) approach of classical translation studies to the investigation of specialized translation. In addition to its object, subject and a number of tasks, the article identifies five conceptual positions of translation-oriented terminology, which significantly change the view on language and translation. Specifically, it posits that the main function of language and translation is creation rather than communication, whereas translation itself is a third-order simulacrum or hyperreality. Taking into account that the order cannot be born out of chaos, a creator, who relies on empirically verified language principles and laws, but not the observed facts, is an especially relevant figure in the field. The author distinguishes between translational, lexicographic, standard-related and situational areas of translation-oriented terminology research. The article provides a helpful list of resources for potential research in the German-Ukrainian direction, which could facilitate proper multidomain terminology regulation and standardization efforts. Based on the current needs of science and society, including the translation market, the outlined perspectives and tasks of translation-oriented terminology confirm its relevance and importance. It is noteworthy that translationoriented terminology offers a significant advantage compared to other fields due to the applicability of its findings and standardization achievements, which initially address national priorities and ensure the provision of high-quality specialized translations.

Literary translation is essentially a creative process of rewriting. The translator is the author of the translation text, even if he is not the author of the original text. A translation is never a clone of the original. In translating, we do not say the same thing differently, we say something else differently, as Henri Meschonnic put it. Concepts borrowed from the field of history of translation, like historicism, passive retranslation and active retranslation are used to go against those who still erroneously think that the meaning of a literary text lies only in its words, and claim that “we translate words because there is nothing else to translate”. Against this linguistic and literary approach, the poetics approach takes into account the fact that, between the author and the reader, the translator is an active and creative agent in the process. Translating is always a “ménage à trois”.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Alash intelligentsia made a great contribution to the development of culture and science of the Kazakh society. They wrote textbooks from different fields of science to educate the educated generation. The Alash intelligentsia conducted cultural work on the education of the high generation, contributed to the opening of theaters and schools of the European system. They published their articles in periodicals in order to reveal people's literacy, broaden their horizons and present them with works of masterpieces of world literature. And the topic we are aiming at is the contribution of Alikhan Bokeikhan to the field of translation in Kazakh literature. Alikhan Bukeikhan is a translator who is deeply immersed in the translation business. He translated many works of art, scientific and educational works and textbooks from Russian into Kazakh. Among the listed translation works, Alikhan paid special attention to the translation of fiction. A. Bukeikhan translated stories, fables and novellas of masterpieces of world literature, published his translations on the pages of the press. He has the stories «Surta Coffee House», «Hadji Murad», «The Caucasian Prisoner», «The Sun» translated by Leo Tolstoy and Aesop, as well as «Seventy-seven Fables». He also translated into Kazakh many works of Guy de Maupassant, such as «Simon's Father», «The Old Woman Sauvage» from Fr. Wilde, «Makar's Dream» by Korolenko, «Sparrow» by Turgenev, «Kara Khanim» by Mamin-Sibirnyak, «Baymakan», «Legend of the Crimea», «Letter to Bogamet», «Death of Gere», «Azamat Yusuf» by N. Marks. In this article we analyzed the story of Alikhan Bukeikhan "Chameleon" translated by A. P. Chekhov. When comparing literary translations created by A. Bukeikhan, we have identified several features of translation characteristic of him. Alikhan Bukeikhan knew the Russian language very well as a translator; in his translation, he sought to freely translate the work of art, preserve the idea and content of the work; A. Bukeikhan translated the work in line with the Kazakh self-consciousness; he paid more attention to its spiritual influence than to the artistic specifics of the work. Literary translation in Kazakh literature, founded by Abai, Ybyray, Shakarim, was continued in the early twentieth century by such Alash intellectuals as A.Baitursynuly, A.Bokeikhan, J.Aimautuly, M.Dulatuly. Artistic translations created by A.Bukeikhan in Kazakh literature today are distinguished by their originality.

Translation as an activity involving two languages and two cultures poses severe challenges for a translator aiming to produce a cultural equivalent of the source text. This negotiation between the source and the target texts consumes most of the time dedicated to the translation activity. This study makes a contribution to the exposure of local culture of Uttarakhand (India) into the larger field of translation studies. Though much study has been conducted in the field of equivalence in translation with respect to known languages, the concept needs to be explored in the regional and vernacular translations. This paper aims to examine a stage adaptation of Othello- the landmark tragedy of Elizabethan age, aiming to understand the use of equivalence to mitigate the cultural difference between ST and TT. The study undertakes a close reading of Othello by Shakespeare and its Garhwali version Rumelo, critical works based on translation studies, and the recordings of stage performances of the play in Garhwali. An interview with the translator (Bijalwan) and director (Dobhal) aided in understanding the significance of cultural and linguistic elements introduced by the translator and the dramatist for the target audience. The study involving domestication of a text of global significance asserts the universal value of Shakespeare’s plays transcending time, culture and geographical boundaries, and furthermore emphasizes the importance of translation, and equivalence in translation, in making the source text more audience-friendly and comprehensible.

Abstract Effective communication is crucial in a globalized communication technology-driven world. Translation and communication disciplines seem to meet in the field of Intercultural Communication, the study of communication between individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Translation, an interlinguistic and intercultural enterprise, generates quality translation products which portray not only a suitable linguistic format but also a cross- cultural component carefully thought out by expert translators. Fully aware of their responsibility in developing translator-to- be intercultural communication competence, higher education institutions did make their contributions for their graduates to become expert translators producing quality translations. Two such proposals are analysed to discern whether a traditional general approach effectively includes relevant intercultural components identified in a more recent study. At the outset, Lee-Jahnke’s 2001 comprehensive translation quality assessment model is explored to find out the extent and manner in which intercultural matters are taken in, thus making the evaluation tool suitable for academic and field work assessment. Then, PICT’s 2012 specific intercultural competence framework, developed as part of European Union- funded “Promoting Intercultural Competence in Translators” project, is reviewed to identify specific intercultural competence fields and show their degree of correspondence with relevant sections in the general assessment model and its adequacy for judging translation quality.

Abstract This article addresses the relationship between translation, intercultural communication and international development practice as encountered in the field. Through tracing parallel developments in the academic fields of translation studies and intercultural communication studies, it highlights the move from static concepts of language, nation, and culture to the fluid exchange spaces of multilingual and intercultural encounters. In-the-field examples of international development challenges are examined and discussed in the light of these theoretical shifts. We propose (a) that both fields of study can learn from each other, (b) that translation training should account for the messy intercultural spaces of contact zones, and (c) that guidance on intercultural practice be further developed to benefit those working in the field.

The fast advancement of technology forces people to use it to simplify their lives. In the translation field, besides human translator, there is also machine translator used to help people in transferring the meaning of a text from source language (SL) to target language (TL). Along with the development of technology and social media, Instagram as one of the most famous social media platforms launched Instagram Machine Translation in 2016 that can help people to translate the captions and comments posted by the users. This study was conducted to identify the types of translation shift and the types of translation equivalence performed by Instagram machine translation in translating the captions on @instagram account from English to Indonesian. By using descriptive qualitative method to reach the goals of the study, the appropriate data were obtained. The data were analyzed based on the translation shifts theory from Catford (1965) and translation equivalence by Nida (1964). The findings showed that all types of Catford’s translation shifts were found in the translation process and the most common type was structure shift. It was also found that Instagram machine translation was successful in transferring the message from SL to TL equivalently. Postcolonial theory, widening the horizons of translation research, has played a significant role in the history of translation studies. But this interdisciplinary field was often neglected. This paper analyses two major authors of translation studies, Berman, French translator and theorist and Venuti, American theorist inspired by Berman, and examines their similarities and differences. It compares their theoretical frames, ‘traduction de la lettre’ of Berman and ‘resistant translation’ of Venuti and finally reaches the conclusion that, for a better understanding of the peculiarities of each situation of translational acts, a third paradigm, proposed by Deleuze, can be useful.

The article deals with the main ways of studying the problem of translation of structural relationships of discursive texts and subspecies of special discourse in the field of information technology, each of which has an author, recipient, purpose and is implemented in different genres of special discourse. Translation of structural relationships is the final level of translation of the entire information technology discourse text, from the source English language into the translating Kyrgyz language, or into the translating Russian language. In this case, the translator aims to transfer the entire structure and semantics of the translated units of lexical and grammatical level in such a way that all of them together would form a complete picture of the discourse text in the translating language, if possible, adequate to that in the source text. The difficulties encountered by translators in dealing with scientific and technical texts in the field of information technology (press releases, instructions, website and user's guide) are identified.
