The research was intended to identify the differences between translating and interpreting process, in order to explain the similarities of translating and interpreting process, and describing how the process between translating and interpreting process. There were two main theories adopted in this study. The theory of translation by Nida (1974) and interpreting theory by Pohhacker (2004). Nida’s and Pohhcaker’s theories were used to find out the answer of problem in this study. They were also some supporting theories concerning the translation and interpreting. “Meaning Based Translation” by Larson (1998) and some other theory were used along discuss about the differences and similarities of translating process and interpreting process in this study.

Over the centuries, interaction between people of different linguistic backgrounds has thriven on the process of translating and interpreting. Wherever people have lived, these language-based activities have continued to promote communication among them, the barrier which the multiplicity of language has caused notwithstanding. This paper takes a look at translating and interpreting within the context of their origin, status, audience, modus operandi, etc. Whereas translating involves the process of writing on paper and is based on a given text, interpreting takes place orally and is not based on any written text. Whereas translating allows for the documentation and preservation of material in a written form for future readers, interpreting takes place on the spot. Whereas translating calls for an audience of readers, interpreting calls for an audience of listeners. The paper argues that though approached differently, the overall aim of translating and interpreting is to build a linguistic bridge among people and nations; to reduce the communication gap among them. It concludes that in spite of the operational variations their singular aim has always been semantics – the search for meaning between different linguistic parties in different settings. The psycholinguistic model serves as methodology.

Interlingual and intercultural communication in the form of oral and written translation is as old as mankind. Only in the past 40 years has it achieved recognition as a profession on an international scale: the Fédéeration Internationale dee Traduoteurs (FIT), which today embraces 49 national associations, was founded in 1953; the Association Internationale des Interprètes de Conférence (AIIC) came into being in the same year. Many countries began to offer both academic training and degrees to future professionals in the field; the Institute for Translator and Interpreter Training at the University of Vienna, for instance, celebrated its 40th anniversary a few years ago (cf., Festschrift 1983).

This article analyzes evidence of translating and interpreting activities (indiscriminately referred to as yi (譯), which also denotes translators or interpreters in classical Chinese) in first-century China between the Latter Han (25–220 AD) Chinese administration and non-Han Chinese minority tribes along the then Southwestern frontier (modern Yunnan and Sichuan provinces). The importance of this archival record to the historical study of translation and interpreting is two-fold. First, it contains crucial details pertinent to translating and interpreting activities in China in antiquity. Second, it documents concepts of yi synchronically, as perceived by three main participants in the interpreting events: the emperor, the frontier inspector, and the frontier clerk cum interpreter. The presentation of what they actually wrote, said, and did in the first-century interpreting setting in China, with close reference to standard histories, objectively depicts the meanings of yi as perceived by these figures at the time.

This paper reflects on semi-professional translating and interpreting as a hobby. It is based on an autobiographical case study of translating and interpreting from Germanic languages into Finnish for the national and regional Icelandic horse riding associations. The translatorial actions are discussed within the framework of the Functionalist Translation Theory. The relation between the source text and the target text, the central role of the analysis of the function of the target text, the target text as a product of the translation process, and the role of the cultural and socio-cultural contexts in the translation process are discussed through examples. The interpreting of riding lessons is especially demanding, since it is a holistic and complex action situation which requires both interpretation and riding expertise from the interpreter. It is suggested that this kind of a special setting is worth further research.

Annotation:
The component processes specific to simultaneous interpreting and common to interpreting and listening were investigated. Experienced conference interpreters and inexperienced bilinguals performed aural-to-oral simultaneous interpreting of a narrative and a procedure from English into French and then gave a free recall of each immediately afterwards. A comparison group of bilinguals performed a simple listening task with the same materials. The texts were on an unfamiliar topic (positron emission tomography) and differed only with respect to frame type.
Experience showed a main effect on interpreting measures, (experienced interpreters performed more accurately), and interacted with text-structure variables that indexed proposition generation, but did not affect recall. Task did not have a main effect on recall and interacted weakly with text-structure variables. Text and Text-structure variables had very strong effects both for the interpreting and the recall measures.
The results were viewed as evidence that interpreting involves the same component processes as normal listening comprehension rather than constituting a specialized comprehension skill. Analyses of text-structure variables provided evidence for influence of high-level conceptual processing and other component processes both on line and off line. Since there was no evidence that interpreting interfered with comprehension, the qualitative on-line measures possible in the interpreting task appear to be generalizable to comprehension under more usual circumstances.

This introduction positions the themes of the collection within the field of pragmatics and translation studies. It outlines the breadth of the field from interpreting to sensory translation and discusses novel papers in four different parts. In the first three parts, translation is defined as involving at least two different languages, and the chapters focus on pragmatic processes and issues that surface in translation practices. The first part focuses on interpreting; the second part centers on the translation of fictional and non-fictional texts and spaces; the third part discusses audiovisual translation; and in the fourth part translation processes are explored in a wider context that includes translating senses and action into language in connection with experiencing and preparing food.

AbstractThis chapter takes the case of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance (IWSA) to discuss the relevance of translation and interpretation for transnational political movements. It asks how the IWSA dealt with the diversity of languages among their delegates and analyses the (at times entangled) roles of the interpreters and journalists in the context of the regular transnational conferences and on the board of the organisation. The chapter gauges how translation was used to facilitate the transfer of political arguments, but also helped to reinforce hierarchies of cultures and languages.

Перевод - это сложный вид межкультурной и межязыковой коммуникации, основной задачей которого является установление эквивалентности между переводным и исходным текстами, что имеет особую значимость при переводе тех типов текста, в которых точность донесения и сохранения информации играет намного более существенную роль, нежели иной компонент коммуникации (фатический, эмоциональный и т.п.), а именно в текстах с элементами научного дискурса, к которым следует отнести и жанр научной фантастики, значимым представителем которого и является исследуемый материал. Translation is a complex modus of cross-cultural and translingual communication, the ultimate objective of it being ensuring equivalence between the translated text and the original; this acquires special significance when translating texts with elements of scientific discourse (wherein the accuracy of interpreting information is of primary importance, much more imperative than any other component of communication, be it emotional, phatic or other). Science fiction as a genre can be seen qua just such a text.

This paper goes through the problems that encounter the translators and interpreters of the Holy Quran particularly the Basmalah. Misinterpretation of the Holy Quran’s expression (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) has been a controversial issue for centuries by now. This is partly because most of the Quranic words and expressions are peculiar to the Arabic language and partly due to their particularity to specific denotations used in this Holy Book of Islam. This has been a problematic issue in many attempts of translating the expression into different languages for a long time. Yet no translator, Islamic scholar, or religious and educational institutions undertook the responsibility of scrutinizing the deep conception of the expression (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم) seriously. Doing so, some of such cliché interpretations even cause unintentional blasphemy according to the Quranic concept. Accordingly, the present study not only sheds light but reconsiders the keywords of these misinterpretations. It focuses on the real meanings and divine parts of speech used by this expression (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم).

A critical challenge in neuro-symbolic (NeSy) approaches is to handle the symbol grounding problem without direct supervision. That is mapping high-dimensional raw data into an interpretation over a finite set of abstract concepts with a known meaning, without using labels. In this work, we ground symbols into sequences of images by exploiting symbolic logical knowledge in the form of Linear Temporal Logic over finite traces (LTLf) formulas, and sequence-level labels expressing if a sequence of images is compliant or not with the given formula. Our approach is based on translating the LTLf formula into an equivalent deterministic finite automaton (DFA) and interpreting the latter in fuzzy logic. Experiments show that our system outperforms recurrent neural networks in sequence classification and can reach high image classification accuracy without being trained with any single-image label.
