Purpose – This paper aims to examine how multinational enterprises (MNEs) and local partners, including suppliers, customers and competitors in China, improve their innovation capabilities through collaboration. This collaboration was analysed as a three-way interaction between the ownership-specific (O) advantages or firm-specific assets (FSAs) of the MNE subsidiary, the FSAs of the local partner and the location-specific assets of the host location. Design/methodology/approach – The propositions are examined through a survey of 320 firms, supplemented with 30 in-depth case studies, based in Mainland China. Findings – It is found that the recombination of asset-type (Oa) FSAs and transaction-type (Ot) FSAs from both partners leads to new innovation-related ownership advantages, or “recombinant advantages”. Ot FSAs, in the form of access to local suppliers, customers or government networks are particularly important for reducing the liability of foreignness for MNEs. Originality/value – The study reveals important patterns of reciprocal transfer, sharing and integration for different asset categories (tacit, codified) and different forms of FSA and explicitly links these to different innovation performance outcomes. The paper reports on these findings, making an empirical contribution in an important context (China-based partnerships). This paper also contributes to conceptual developments, connecting various kinds of FSA, tacit and codifiable assets and “recombinant advantages”. Limited conceptual, methodological and empirical contributions are made in linking asset integration with (measurable) innovation performance outcomes in international partnerships.

Activities carried out in May-June 2018 aim to be an additional source of income to the community. Poor economic conditions are a source of declining levels of public health and education. The main problems faced by farmer group partners and village heads are: (1) community income is inadequate, (2) lack of knowledge of how to raise quail and formulation of rations, (3) partner duties as monitoring activities. The specific target of the PKM program is to create a safer and more conducive environment as an implication of the transfer of quail breeding knowledge and good ration formulation to give birth to a viable pioneer youth group who want to work and partners as monitors are expected to become new innovators independently in their environment. The methods offered: (a) Socialization of mentoring programs raising quails as an effort to convince partners to follow them, (b) Preparation of social preconditions (c) Implementation of quail farming assistance programs supported by Farmer Group Partners and Village Heads with Universities (Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Muhammadiyah University of South Tapanuli) to ensure knowledge transfer goes well and, (d) Monitoring, evaluation and reporting. During the event the target partner has activities showed high enthusiasm, proactive conditions and discussion. Constraints arise when monitoring activities, allegedly due to the low motivation of group members, the capacity of the cage and quail transferred by the PKM Team is not enough as a fundamental motivation for members. This suspicion is reinforced by the information obtained in the field, that in general the self-help groups (Farmer / Youth / Organization / Individual Groups) in this village have been accustomed to "enjoying" social activities in the form of assistance from government and private institutions through various programs with sufficient budget big. This condition triggers "laziness" members in maintaining the transferred assets.

In a primitive chordate model of natural chimerism, one chimeric partner is often eliminated in a process of allogeneic resorption. Here, we identify the cellular framework underlying loss of tolerance to one partner within a natural Botryllus schlosseri chimera. We show that the principal cell type mediating chimeric partner elimination is a cytotoxic morula cell (MC). Proinflammatory, developmental cell death programs render MCs cytotoxic and, in collaboration with activated phagocytes, eliminate chimeric partners during the “takeover” phase of blastogenic development. Among these genes, the proinflammatory cytokine IL-17 enhances cytotoxicity in allorecognition assays. Cellular transfer of FACS-purified MCs from allogeneic donors into recipients shows that the resorption response can be adoptively acquired. Transfer of 1 × 105 allogeneic MCs eliminated 33 of 78 (42%) recipient primary buds and 20 of 76 (20.5%) adult parental adult organisms (zooids) by 14 d whereas transfer of allogeneic cell populations lacking MCs had only minimal effects on recipient colonies. Furthermore, reactivity of transferred cells coincided with the onset of developmental-regulated cell death programs and disproportionately affected developing tissues within a chimera. Among chimeric partner “losers,” severe developmental defects were observed in asexually propagating tissues, reflecting a pathologic switch in gene expression in developmental programs. These studies provide evidence that elimination of one partner in a chimera is an immune cell-based rejection that operates within histocompatible pairs and that maximal allogeneic responses involve the coordination of both phagocytic programs and the “arming” of cytotoxic cells.

Transfer programs have been shown to reduce intimate partner violence (IPV), but little evidence exists on how activities linked to transfers affect IPV or what happens when programs end. We assess postprogram impacts on IPV of randomly assigning women in Bangladesh to receive cash or food, with or without nutrition behavior change communication (BCC). Six to ten months postprogram, IPV did not differ between women receiving transfers and a control group; however, women receiving transfers with BCC experienced 26% less physical violence. Evidence on mechanisms suggests sustained effects of BCC on women's “threat points,” men's social costs of violence, and household well-being.

Flexible targeted helping is considered an advanced form of prosocial behavior in hominoids, as it requires the actor to assess different situations that a conspecific may be in, and to subsequently flexibly satisfy different needs of that partner depending on the nature of those situations. So far, apart from humans such behaviour has only been experimentally shown in chimpanzees and in Eurasian jays. Recent studies highlight the prosocial tendencies of several bird species, yet flexible targeted helping remained untested, largely due to methodological issues as such tasks are generally designed around tool-use, and very few bird species are capable of tool-use. Here, we tested Goffin’s cockatoos, which proved to be skilled tool innovators in captivity, in a tool transfer task in which an actor had access to four different objects/tools and a partner to one of two different apparatuses that each required one of these tools to retrieve a reward. As expected from this species, we recorded playful object transfers across all conditions. Yet, importantly and similar to apes, three out of eight birds transferred the correct tool more often in the test condition than in a condition that also featured an apparatus but no partner. Furthermore, one of these birds transferred that correct tool first more often before transferring any other object in the test condition than in the no-partner condition, while the other two cockatoos were marginally non-significantly more likely to do so. Additionally, there was no difference in the likelihood of the correct tool being transferred first for either of the two apparatuses, suggesting that these birds flexibly adjusted what to transfer based on their partner´s need. Future studies should focus on explanations for the intra-specific variation of this behaviour, and should test other parrots and other large-brained birds to see how this can be generalized across the class and to investigate the evolutionary history of this trait.

Developing effective international joint ventures (IJVs) is critical for firms entering economies in transition, such as Kazakhstan. The resource-based view of the firm forms the foundation to examine the influence of knowledge transfer between IJV partners. Traditionally, the transfer of knowledge between IJV partners has been theorized to lessen dependence, increasing IJV instability. However, the relationship development literature indicates that the exchange of assets between partners can strengthen relationship ties, enhancing IJV stability. The authors use a sample of 87 matched dyads from two-party IJVs formed in Kazakhstan to examine the influence of knowledge transfer between IJV partners on commitment and resulting satisfaction. The results, supportive of relationship development theory, indicate that Kazakhstan–foreign IJVs with higher levels of knowledge transfer resulted in higher levels of firms’ commitment to and satisfaction with their relationships, thus supporting a relationship development perspective of knowledge transfer. The authors address implications for academics and practitioners.

Reduced gap junction activity has long been implicated in tumorigenesis. To elucidate the potential role of intercellular communication in melanoma development, we examined gap junctional capability of melanocytic cells from various stages of tumor progression in coculture models using dye transfer assays. Normal melanocytes coupled with keratinocytes by gap junctional formation, whereas melanoma cells did not. Instead, melanoma cells communicated among themselves and with fibroblasts. This switch in communication partners coincided with a shift from E-cadherin to N-cadherin expression during melanoma development. Forced expression of E-cadherin by adenoviral gene transfer in N-cadherin-expressing melanoma cells restored gap junctional compatibility with keratinocytes. Our data suggest that (1) melanocyte transformation is associated with loss of the pre-existing gap junctional activity with keratinocytes but a concomitant gain of communication with a newly juxtaposed cell type, the fibroblasts, (2) the specificity of gap junctional formation during melanoma development is determined by the cadherin profile on the melanocytic cells and (3) the overall gap junctional activity of melanocytic cells is not reduced with transformation.

In our routine surveys for the powdery mildew disease in greenhouse tomatoes, we detected a new pathogen that forms pseudochains consisting of 12 conidia. To identify the original plant that dispersed this pathogen, wild plants infected with powdery mildew were monitored. The pathogen on Japanese mallotus, Mallotus japonicus, produced a similar type of pseudochain, and conidia were infectious to tomatoes. Inversely, the conidia on the tomato leaves infected M. japonicus. Infectivity assays and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-based phylogenetic analyses indicated that the two pathogens on the tomato and M. japonicus were identical. These results suggest that the conidia on M. japonicus can be transmitted to greenhouse tomatoes. This work documents the ecological transmission of conidia between wild plants and greenhouse tomatoes

The scaffolding protein PICK1 (protein interacting with C kinase 1) contains an N-terminal PSD-95/Discs large/ZO-1 (PDZ) domain and a central lipid-binding Bin/amphiphysin/Rvs (BAR) domain. PICK1 is thought to regulate trafficking of its PDZ binding partners but different and even opposing functions have been suggested. Here, we apply ELISA-based assays and confocal microscopy in HEK293 cells with inducible PICK1 expression to assess in an isolated system the ability of PICK1 to regulate trafficking of natural and engineered PDZ binding partners. The dopamine transporter (DAT), which primarily sorts to degradation upon internalization, did not form perinuclear clusters with PICK1, and PICK1 did not affect DAT internalization/recycling. However, transfer of the PICK1-binding DAT C terminus to the β2-adrenergic receptor, which sorts to recycling upon internalization, led to formation of PICK1 co-clusters in Rab11-positive compartments. Furthermore, PICK1 inhibited Rab11-mediated recycling of the receptor in a BAR and PDZ domain-dependent manner. In contrast, transfer of the DAT C terminus to the δ-opioid receptor, which sorts to degradation, did not result in PICK1 co-clusters or any change in internalization/recycling. Further support for a role of PICK1 determined by its PDZ cargo was obtained for the PICK1 interaction partner prolactin-releasing peptide receptor (GPR10). GPR10 co-localized with Rab11 and clustered with PICK1 upon constitutive internalization but co-localized with the late endosomal marker Rab7 and did not cluster with PICK1 upon agonist-induced internalization. Our data suggest a selective role of PICK1 in clustering and reducing the recycling rates of PDZ domain binding partners sorted to the Rab11-dependent recycling pathway.

The development of sensitive and selective assays for protein biomarkers and other biological analytes is important for advancing the fields of clinical diagnostics and bioanalytical chemistry. The potential advantages of using aptamers in electrochemical sandwich assays are being increasingly recognized. These assays may include an aptamer as both capture and detection agent or a combination of an aptamer with a different partner such as an antibody, a lectin or a nanomaterial. The second binding partner in the sandwich structure is typically conjugated to a redox marker, a catalyst or an enzyme that can be used to generate the signal needed for electrochemical detection. Nanoparticles and other nanostructures can be used as the carriers for multiple molecules of the detection partner and thereby increase the signal. Nanostructured surfaces can be used to increase surface area and improve electron transfer. Sensitive electrochemical methods including impedance, differential and square-wave voltammetry and chronocoulometry have been used for electrochemical signal read-out. Impressive results have been achieved using electrochemical sandwich assays in terms of limit of detection and linear range for a growing range of analytes. The recent progress for this type of assay for proteins and other biomarkers is the subject of this review.

It is in line with Article 92 about Compilation of Islamic Law which mentions that either husband or wife without any consent of the other partner is not allowed to sell or transfer the ownerships of the shared-property. Provisionsof the article indicate that if the husband or wife intends to carry out a legal act whose object is related to a common asset (for example selling, granting, etc). whether it is movable or immovable property, the legal action must be based on agreement of both parties (husband and wife). To figure out and explain the legal consequences of share assets transfer throght a grant without permission from one of the parties. Research method used in this is normative juridical legal research. To find out and explain the comparison of provisions on the transfer of property with husband and wife based on Law Number 1 Year 1974 and Compilation of Islamic Law Absence of approval from both husband and wife gives legal consequences that transfer of shared property becomes null and void by law.

Objective: To transfer, students often must navigate complex and imperfect information about credit transfer, bureaucratic hurdles, and conflicting degree requirements. This study examined how administrators and transfer personnel think about institutional online transfer resources and examined community colleges’ online transfer information. Methods: For a sample of 20 Texas community colleges, we spoke to key transfer personnel about the information provided to students and reviewed college websites, assessing the ease of access and usefulness of online transfer information. We used a qualitative case study approach to triangulate findings from our data sources. Results: Approximately two thirds of colleges in the sample fell below the highest standard on our rubric for either ease of access or usefulness, indicating room for improvement at most institutions. Many personnel recognized the strengths and limitations of their college’s online information, though several were ambivalent about the need for improving online information, arguing that online information is not as promising an intervention as face-to-face advising. Conclusion/Contributions: Our research illustrates the need for colleges to develop and update their online information intentionally, determining which information students need to transfer (including transfer guides for partner programs/colleges) and how students might search for that information, and ensuring that necessary transfer information is available and up to date. The framework provided by our website review approach, coupled with a proposed rubric to assess ease of access and usefulness of transfer information, may guide institutions in their evaluation of their online transfer information.

AbstractThe effect that the 2008/09 recession has had on unemployment and, in particular, on the distribution of job losses across households is of key concern to policymakers. During the 1991 recession rising male unemployment was associated with a sharp increase in the number of workless households, with this polarisation of work between ‘work-rich’ and ‘work-poor’ persisting many years later. Part of the reason for this polarisation was that the design of the tax and benefit system produced weak work incentives for women partnered to unemployed men, particularly if the jobs open to them were either part time or low paid. Since 1999, the United Kingdom has undertaken reform of employment and transfer programmes, with a particular focus on boosting incomes and work incentives for families with children. The resulting literature focussed on the impact that these reforms had on women's movements into employment. Since the economy entered recession in 2008, an increasingly important question is how have these reforms affected women's decisions to remain in employment (or enter into work) if their partner becomes unemployed. This paper usesLabour Force Surveydata to assess the effect of male job loss on their partners' employment and to examine the implications for the distribution of jobs across households. Results suggest that working women whose partners lost their jobs in the 2008/09 recession were more likely to remain in work than before and this has helped to mediate the growth in workless couple households.

The knowledge transfer program (KTP) in Malaysia was instituted to facilitate knowledge transfer, collaboration, and interaction between academics in public higher institutions and other stakeholders. These programs are divided into community or industry programs. Under the community program, academics collaborate with a community partner to utilize their research findings in the community environment. This quantitative study attempts to assess KTP based on academics’ postproject responses to online questionnaires. The participants in this study consist of 132 academics of Malaysian public universities of Rolling 1 to Rolling 4 projects between 2011 and 2016. Of 132 individuals invited to participate, 84 of them (64%) took part in the online survey. These data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s range test. The findings indicate that the KTP has enabled academics, irrespective of position, to deploy their ideas and knowledge in a real-world community setting. The relationship between academic position and learning experience in transferring knowledge, however, is inverse: the higher the level of an academic position, the lower the learning experience. The findings also exhibit the experience and challenges that one would expect from the involvement of academics in a community KTP.

Social interventions such as cash transfers provide the much needed support to vulnerable people. People living with disabilities continue to remain economically deprived, experiencing high levels of poverty. In Wajir County, this crisis is more exacerbated by the nomadic setting where disabled persons are left behind as other individuals move. They are left to cater for themselves due to their mobility constraints. The welfare of these people continue to deteriorate since they are unable to work and highly depend on others and hence do not have the capacity of self-sufficiency. These people remain dependent on the government and non-governmental agencies. The effect of cash transfer programs however, is not fully known. This study sought to assess the effect of cash transfer on the economic well-being of people with severe disabilities in Wajir County. The study is founded on the Maslow’s theory of needs, the sustainable livelihoods framework and the rights-based approach. The study employed mixed methods research design and targeted all family heads for all the 183 under the Persons with Severe Disabilities Cash Transfer in Wajir North and Tarbaj sub-Counties as at 2015 and 19 senior officials working with the sub-counties’ social development offices. The study used primary data obtained through semi-structured questionnaires and interview guides. Data analysis methods that be employed involved quantitative and qualitative approaches. The qualitative data was analysed using content analysis where the information obtained was reported in a narrative form and direct quotes. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Quantitative data analysis was facilitated by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 20. Descriptive statistics such as the rate of response, frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation were used. Inferential statistics generated included correlation and regression analysis. The study findings showed that cash transfer supported household income, healthcare access, investment in productive activities and empowerment had positive and significant effect on the economic wellbeing of persons living with disabilities in Wajir County. The study concluded that if the cash transfer programme was to achieve its objectives and transform the economic wellbeing of the beneficiary households, the aforementioned support areas needed to be adequately embedded in the programme’s plan. The study made several recommendations among them that the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Services Programmes should consider increasing the monthly disbursements given to persons living with disabilities so that they can venture in to activities that would give them supplementary incomes. There can be other activities within the programme meant to support the beneficiaries to be self-reliant so that they do not have to rely on the transfers throughout. The study also recommends that the officials overseeing the cash transfer programme for persons living with disabilities should have follow up programs especially for beneficiaries who have ventured in to productive activities so that they can support them to expand their income generation activities. The programme can partner with other development partners such as donors and NGOs and also the county government to create a fund where beneficiaries can get more assistance both financial and non-financial in order to expand their activities. The study further recommends that the programme should provide networking programs were beneficiary households can interact with various organizations so as to secure livelihood opportunities such as employment among others.

Background Extended in vitro embryo culture and blastocyst transfer have emerged as essential components of the advanced reproductive technology armamentarium, permitting selection of more advanced embryos considered best suited for transfer. Aim of study The aim of this study was to compare between cleavage stage and blastocyst stage embryo transfer in patients undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and to assess the role of assisted hatching technique in patients undergoing blastocyst transfer. Patients and methods This study was carried out on two groups. Group I: 110 patients who underwent 120 cycles of intracytoplasmic sperm injection with day 2-3 embryo transfer—for unexplained infertility or male factor within the previous 3 years. Their data obtained retrospectively from medical records. Group II: 46 age matched infertile female patients undergoing 51 intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles for similar causes. Patients in Group II were further subdivided into 2 equal subgroups; Group Ila (23 patients), which had laser assisted hatching and Group IIb (23 patients), which did not have assisted hatching. All patients had an infertility workup including basal hormonal profile, pelvic ultrasound, hysterosalpingogram and/or laparoscope and semen analysis of the patient's partner. All patients underwent controlled ovarian hyperstimulation: Using long protocol of ovulation induction. Laser assisted hatching was done for blastocysts of 23 patients. Results Comparison between both groups as regards the reproductive outcome showed a significant difference in pregnancy and implantation rates, both being higher in group II ( P < 0.05) Comparison between both subgroups as regards the reproductive outcome showed a highly significant difference in pregnancy and implantation rates, both being higher in Group IIa ( P < 0.01). There was also a significantly higher rate of multiple pregnancies among Group IIa ( P < 0.05). Conclusion Blastocyst transfer is a successful and improved alternative for patients with multiple failed in vitro fertilization attempts, associated with a significant increase in pregnancy and implantation rates. Furthermore, laser assisted hatching increases implantation and clinical pregnancy rates.

Abstract In Southern Europe youngsters leave their parental home significantly later than in Northern Europe and the United States. In this paper, we study the effect of a monthly cash subsidy on the probability that young adults live apart from parents and childbearing. The subsidy, introduced in Spain in 2008, is conditional on young adults renting accommodation, and it amounts to almost 20% of the average youngsters’ wage. Our identification strategy exploits the subsidy eligibility age threshold to assess the causal impact of the cash transfer. Difference-in-Differences estimates show positive effects of the policy on the probability of living apart from parents, living with a romantic partner, and childbearing for 22 year-olds compared to 21 year-olds. Results persist when the sample is expanded to include wider age ranges. The effect is larger among young adults earning lower incomes and living in high rental price areas. This is consistent with the hypothesis that youngsters delay household formation because the cost is too high relative to their income.

Proteins incorporating iron–sulfur (Fe-S) co-factors are required for a plethora of metabolic processes. Their maturation depends on three Fe-S cluster assembly machineries in plants, located in the cytosol, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. After de novo formation on scaffold proteins, transfer proteins load Fe-S clusters onto client proteins. Among the plastidial representatives of these transfer proteins, NFU2 and NFU3 are required for the maturation of the [4Fe-4S] clusters present in photosystem I subunits, acting upstream of the high-chlorophyll fluorescence 101 (HCF101) protein. NFU2 is also required for the maturation of the [2Fe-2S]-containing dihydroxyacid dehydratase, important for branched-chain amino acid synthesis. Here, we report that recombinant Arabidopsis thaliana NFU1 assembles one [4Fe-4S] cluster per homodimer. Performing co-immunoprecipitation experiments and assessing physical interactions of NFU1 with many [4Fe-4S]-containing plastidial proteins in binary yeast two-hybrid assays, we also gained insights into the specificity of NFU1 for the maturation of chloroplastic Fe-S proteins. Using bimolecular fluorescence complementation and in vitro Fe-S cluster transfer experiments, we confirmed interactions with two proteins involved in isoprenoid and thiamine biosynthesis, 1-hydroxy-2-methyl-2-(E)-butenyl-4-diphosphate synthase and 4-amino-5-hydroxymethyl-2-methylpyrimidine phosphate synthase, respectively. An additional interaction detected with the scaffold protein SUFD enabled us to build a model in which NFU1 receives its Fe-S cluster from the SUFBC2D scaffold complex and serves in the maturation of specific [4Fe-4S] client proteins. The identification of the NFU1 partner proteins reported here more clearly defines the role of NFU1 in Fe-S client protein maturation in Arabidopsis chloroplasts among other SUF components.

ABSTRACT A long-standing partnership accounting issue is whether to recognize a bonus or goodwill (or other asset write-ups) upon a partner admission when the incoming partner's net asset contribution differs from his/her capital balance. Although extensively discussed in advanced accounting textbooks, that guidance is nonauthoritative, and the authoritative guidance in the FASB Codification makes almost no mention of partner admissions. This paper discusses how changes in GAAP since 2001 affect the accounting for partner admissions, especially the revised accounting for business combinations and intangible assets. It discusses the circumstances when partner admissions are business combinations. For most partner admissions that are business combinations, the partnership should recognize at fair value the net assets contributed by the incoming partner, including identifiable intangible assets and goodwill. For partner admissions that are reverse acquisitions, the partnership should revalue its own identifiable net assets and goodwill to fair value. Finally, for partner admissions that are not business combinations, the partnership should recognize the net assets contributed by the incoming partner, including identifiable and nonidentifiable intangible assets but not goodwill. Importantly, simple application of the bonus or goodwill methods that are illustrated in textbooks does not conform to GAAP for partner admissions that are business combinations.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the effect of subsidiary autonomy on knowledge transfers during captive offshoring to emerging markets. Design/methodology/approach Five longitudinal cases of captive R&D and manufacturing offshoring to emerging markets. Findings The propositions entail the dual effect of operational subsidiary autonomy on primary knowledge transfer and reverse knowledge transfer. For newly established subsidiaries, operational subsidiary autonomy has a mainly negative effect on primary knowledge transfer and a mainly positive effect on reverse knowledge transfer and local collaboration activities increase this effect. Strategic subsidiary autonomy is mainly negative for primary and reverse knowledge transfer. Research limitations/implications Limitations concerning the applied exploratory case study approach suggest that further research should test the identified relationships using surveys, after the initial pilot study. Practical implications A gradual increase of operational subsidiary autonomy as the subsidiary capability level increases is beneficial to ensure primary knowledge transfer. Allowing subsidiaries to collaborate locally within the confines of their mandates benefits reverse knowledge transfer. Originality/value This paper extends the secondary knowledge transfer concept to include knowledge flows with local collaboration partners, not only other subsidiaries and clarifies the distinction between operational and strategic autonomy concerning local collaboration. A subsidiary asserts operational autonomy when its collaboration with local partners relates to its existing mandate. A subsidiary asserts strategic autonomy when it collaborates with local partners beyond this mandate.

ABSTRACT Bacterial type IV secretion systems are macromolecule transporters with essential functions for horizontal gene transfer and for symbiotic and pathogenic interactions with eukaryotic host cells. Helicobacter pylori, the causative agent of type B gastritis, peptic ulcers, gastric adenocarcinoma, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, uses the Cag type IV secretion system to inject its effector protein CagA into gastric cells. This protein translocation results in altered host cell gene expression profiles and cytoskeletal rearrangements, and it has been linked to cancer development. Interactions of CagA with host cell proteins have been studied in great detail, but little is known about the molecular details of CagA recognition as a type IV secretion substrate or of the translocation process. Apart from components of the secretion apparatus, we previously identified several CagA translocation factors that are either required for or support CagA translocation. To identify protein-protein interactions between these translocation factors, we used a yeast two-hybrid approach comprising all cag pathogenicity island genes. Among several other interactions involving translocation factors, we found a strong interaction between the coupling protein homologue Cagβ (HP0524) and the Cag-specific translocation factor CagZ (HP0526). We show that CagZ has a stabilizing effect on Cagβ, and we demonstrate protein-protein interactions between the cytoplasmic part of Cagβ and CagA and between CagZ and Cagβ, using immunoprecipitation and pull-down assays. Together, our data suggest that these interactions represent a substrate-translocation factor complex at the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane.

Abstract Topoisomerases are essential enzymes that regulate DNA topology. Type 1A family topoisomerases are found in nearly all living organisms and are unique in that they require single-stranded (ss)DNA for activity. These enzymes are vital for maintaining supercoiling homeostasis and resolving DNA entanglements generated during DNA replication and repair. While the catalytic cycle of Type 1A topoisomerases has been long-known to involve an enzyme-bridged ssDNA gate that allows strand passage, a deeper mechanistic understanding of these enzymes has only recently begun to emerge. This knowledge has been greatly enhanced through the combination of biochemical studies and increasingly sophisticated single-molecule assays based on magnetic tweezers, optical tweezers, atomic force microscopy and Förster resonance energy transfer. In this review, we discuss how single-molecule assays have advanced our understanding of the gate opening dynamics and strand-passage mechanisms of Type 1A topoisomerases, as well as the interplay of Type 1A topoisomerases with partner proteins, such as RecQ-family helicases. We also highlight how these assays have shed new light on the likely functional roles of Type 1A topoisomerases in vivo and discuss recent developments in single-molecule technologies that could be applied to further enhance our understanding of these essential enzymes.

AbstractIn Nigeria, Britain asserted its post-colonial security role during and immediately after the transfer of power, and remained responsible for assisting the Nigerian armed forces. While the Americans recognized Nigeria's potential as an important partner in the Cold War, they preferred to focus on development aid. Washington was thus supposed to complement British assistance, while leaving the responsibility for the security sector to London. But with the escalation of the Cold War in Africa, the Nigerians’ efforts to reduce their dependency on the United Kingdom, and Nigeria's growing significance for the United States in African affairs, this Anglo-American burden-sharing was increasingly questioned in Washington. The United States thus eventually decided to militarize its aid policy towards Nigeria. In analysing the militarization of US aid policy towards Nigeria, this article will, first, assess the Anglo-American relationship in the early 1960s; secondly, position Nigeria in American Cold War policy towards Sub-Saharan Africa; thirdly, question the role of military assistance in Washington's policy towards Nigeria and Africa; and fourthly, discover the regional and local factors that influenced policy-makers in Washington and London.

Microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) is involved in the transfer of triglycerides, cholesterol esters, and phospholipids to newly synthesized apolipoprotein (apo) B. It is therefore essential for lipoprotein synthesis and secretion in the liver and the small intestine. Although several recent experiments have revealed the transcriptional regulation of the MTP gene, little has been revealed to date about hepatocyte nuclear factor-4 (HNF-4)-dependent regulation. We here report that the human MTP gene promoter contains a pair of functional responsive elements for HNF-4 and HNF-1, the latter of which is another target gene of HNF-4. Chromatin immunoprecipitation assays provide evidence that endogenous HNF-4 and HNF-1 can bind these elements in chromatin. In Hep G2 cells overexpression of either a dominant negative form of HNF-4 or small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) against HNF-4 dramatically reduces the activities of both the wild type and the HNF-4 site mutant MTP promoter. This suggests that HNF-4 regulates MTP gene expression either directly or indirectly through elevated HNF-1 levels. When Hep G2 cells were cultured with chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), a ligand for the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), mRNA levels for MTP and apo B were reduced because of increased expression of the factor small heterodimer partner (SHP), which factor suppresses HNF-4 activities. Chenodeoxycholic acid, but not a synthetic FXR ligand, attenuated expression of HNF-4, bringing about a further suppression of MTP gene expression. Over time the intracellular MTP protein levels and apo B secretion in the culture medium significantly declined. These results indicate that two nuclear receptors, HNF-4 and FXR, are closely involved in MTP gene expression, and the results provide evidence for a novel interaction between bile acids and lipoprotein metabolism.

Telethonin (also known as titin-cap or t-cap) is a muscle-specific protein whose mutation is associated with cardiac and skeletal myopathies through unknown mechanisms. Our previous work identified cardiac telethonin as an interaction partner for the protein kinase D catalytic domain. In this study, kinase assays used in conjunction with MS and site-directed mutagenesis confirmed telethonin as a substrate for protein kinase D and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase II in vitro and identified Ser-157 and Ser-161 as the phosphorylation sites. Phosphate affinity electrophoresis and MS revealed endogenous telethonin to exist in a constitutively bis-phosphorylated form in isolated adult rat ventricular myocytes and in mouse and rat ventricular myocardium. Following heterologous expression in myocytes by adenoviral gene transfer, wild-type telethonin became bis-phosphorylated, whereas S157A/S161A telethonin remained non-phosphorylated. Nevertheless, both proteins localized predominantly to the sarcomeric Z-disc, where they partially replaced endogenous telethonin. Such partial replacement with S157A/S161A telethonin disrupted transverse tubule organization and prolonged the time to peak of the intracellular Ca2+ transient and increased its variance. These data reveal, for the first time, that cardiac telethonin is constitutively bis-phosphorylated and suggest that such phosphorylation is critical for normal telethonin function, which may include maintenance of transverse tubule organization and intracellular Ca2+ transients.

Cloning and sequencing of the morABC operon region revealed the genes encoding the three components of a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase, which is required for the degradation of the N-heterocycle morpholine by Mycobacterium sp. strain HE5. The cytochrome P450 (P450mor) and the Fe3S4 ferredoxin (Fdmor), encoded by morA and morB, respectively, have been characterized previously, whereas no evidence has hitherto been obtained for a specifically morpholine-induced reductase, which would be required to support the activity of the P450mor system. Analysis of the mor operon has now revealed the gene morC, encoding the ferredoxin reductase of this morpholine monooxygenase. The genes morA, morB and morC were identical to the corresponding genes from Mycobacterium sp. strain RP1. Almost identical mor genes in Mycobacterium chlorophenolicum PCP-1, in addition to an inducible cytochrome P450, pointing to horizontal gene transfer, were now identified. No evidence for a circular or linear plasmid was found in Mycobacterium sp. strain HE5. Analysis of the downstream sequences of morC revealed differences in this gene region between Mycobacterium sp. strain HE5 and Mycobacterium sp. strain RP1 on the one hand, and M. chlorophenolicum on the other hand, indicating insertions or deletions after recombination. Downstream of the mor genes, the gene orf1′, encoding a putative glutamine synthetase, was identified in all studied strains. The gene morC of Mycobacterium sp. strain HE5 was heterologously expressed. The purified recombinant protein FdRmor was characterized as a monomeric 44 kDa protein, being a strictly NADH-dependent, FAD-containing reductase. The K m values of FdRmor for the substrate NADH (37·7±4·1 μM) and the artificial electron acceptors potassium ferricyanide (14·2±1·1 μM) and cytochrome c (28·0±3·6 μM) were measured. FdRmor was shown to interact functionally with its natural redox partner, the Fe3S4 protein Fdmor, and with the Fe2S2 protein adrenodoxin, albeit with a much lower efficiency, but not with spinach ferredoxin. In contrast, adrenodoxin reductase, the natural redox partner of adrenodoxin, could not use Fdmor in activity assays. These results indicated that FdRmor can utilize different ferredoxins, but that Fdmor requires the specific NADH : ferredoxin oxidoreductase FdRmor from the P450mor system for efficient catalytic function.

In this article, a single-label separation-free fluorescence technique is presented as a potential screening method for cell-based receptor antagonists and agonists. The time-resolved fluorescence technique, quenching resonance energy transfer (QRET), relies on a single-labeled binding partner in combination with a soluble quencher. The quencher efficiently suppresses the luminescence of the unbound labeled ligand, whereas the luminescence of the bound fraction is not affected. This approach allows the development of cell-based screening assays in a simple and cost-effective manner. The authors have applied the technique to the screening of β2-adrenoreceptor (β2AR) antagonists and agonists in intact human embryonic kidney HEK293i cells overexpressing human β2-adrenergic receptors. Two antagonists (propranolol, alprenolol) and 2 agonists (metaproterenol, terbutaline) for β2AR were investigated in a displacement assay using europium(III)-labeled pindolol ligand. The assay Z′ values ranged from 0.68 to 0.78, the coefficient of variation was less than 10%, and the Ki values were 19 nM for propranolol and alprenolol and 14 and 5.9 µM for metaproterenol and terbutaline, respectively. The QRET technique with β2AR was also applied to LOPAC compound library screening, yielding nearly error-free recognition of known binders. This simple and cost-effective technique can be readily adapted to laboratory and industrial-scale screening. ( Journal of Biomolecular Screening 2009:936-943)

The first stage demonstrates that there are at least six factors affecting the knowledge transfer from foreign consultants to local partners. The second stage shows that acquired knowledge helps to improve the performance of the local partners. In addition to well-known determinants such as the transferor's willingness, capacity to transfer, the learner's intent and capability to learn, the results of the study provide the evidence to confirm the important roles of knowledge-related factors and environment-related factors. Furthermore, this study enriches the literature on knowledge transfer by adding a look into a specific context of consulting services.

CD28 has been demonstrated to provide the major costimulatory signal for CD4-positive T cells. Ligation with its natural ligands CD80 (B7-1) and CD86 (B7-2) leads to signals during activation that are required for the production of interleukin-2, and this process has been implicated in the regulation of T-cell anergy and programmed cell death. This article describes the assay development, assay validation, and primary screening for small molecule antagonists of this interaction, which could be potential drug candidates. The assay uses homogeneous time-resolved fluorescence based on energy transfer from excited europium ions to cross-linked allophycocyanin, which then subsequently emits a fluorescent signal. An "indirect" approach was taken, whereby the cross-linked allophycocyanin (XL665) is covalently linked to an antihuman antibody that binds to a human immunoglobulin (Ig) domain fused to CD28. The CD86 that is expressed as a fusion protein with a rat Ig domain is bound to biotinylated sheep antirat antibody, which is complexed with streptavidin-europium cryptate. This "cassette" format facilitates the development of related assays using CTLA-4 in place of CD28 and/or CD80 in place of CD86, allowing easy determination of the selectivity of active compounds. When the CD28 and CD86 are in close proximity (i.e., bound), there is a specific time-resolved emission at 665 nm that is largely absent in either unbound partner. Experiments to optimize the reagent concentrations, incubation time, solvent effects and quench effects by colored compounds are discussed, as are the results from robustness testing and data from primary screening.

Intimate and non-partner violence against women are major societal and public health problems afflicting many women around the world. Unlike intimate partner violence (IPV), non-partner violence (NPV) has not been well researched in Ethiopia. Thus, individual, physical, social, and environmental factors associated with NPV are largely unknown. For the study, we used national data collected in the 2016 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey. The survey sample was selected with two-stage stratified cluster sampling. Multivariate logistic regression model was fitted to understand the association between NPV and its correlates. Overall, 45% of the women reported having experienced physical NPV in Ethiopia. Women who owned assets, solely or jointly (land, house, or both), were 70% less likely to report NPV than women who had no such assets. Thus, structural interventions that integrate women’s asset ownership and provide special microfinancing services for women along with community-based gender education programs may have a potential to reduce violence against women in Ethiopia.

At the same time, to protect its geopolitical interests on the economic security of other states, the United States uses such forms of infl uence as tariffi ng, fi nancial restrictions on exports and imports, organized boycotts, asset freezes, economic sanctions, bans on trade, technology transfer and border crossing, embargoes, no-fl y zones and blockades, provoking and inciting armed confl icts. The conclusion is substantiated that economic security is the basis for the stability of any state and serves as the foundation for national institutions and state authorities that ensure it. At the same time, in order to ensure the economic security of the country, the Russian Federation must not only take into account the aggressive US policy in this area, but also actively build and strengthen relations within the framework of economic associations of partner states (for example, ASEAN, EAEU, CIS, BRICS, SCO) and China with the purpose of protecting state interests in the fi eld of ensuring economic security, as well as with the countries of the European Union, and primarily with Germany.

The authors develop a conceptual framework of the marketing–finance interface and discuss its implications for the theory and practice of marketing. The framework proposes that marketing is concerned with the task of developing and managing market-based assets, or assets that arise from the commingling of the firm with entities in its external environment. Examples of market-based assets include customer relationships, channel relationships, and partner relationships. Market-based assets, in turn, increase shareholder value by accelerating and enhancing cash flows, lowering the volatility and vulnerability of cash flows, and increasing the residual value of cash flows.

Shell Selling Onshore Egypt Assets Shell Egypt and one of its affiliates have signed an agreement with a consortium made up of subsidiaries of Cheiron Petroleum Corporation and Cairn Energy PLC to sell its upstream assets in Egypt’s Western Desert for a base consideration of $646 million. Additional payments of up to $280 million between 2021 and 2024 will be made contingent on the oil price and the results of further exploration. The transaction is subject to government and regulatory approvals and is expected to complete in the second half of 2021. The package of assets comprises Shell Egypt’s interest in 13 onshore concessions and the company’s share in Badr El-Din Petroleum Company. Shell will shift its exploration focus in Egypt offshore, which includes seven new blocks in the Nile Delta, West Mediterranean, and Red Sea. Chevron Begins Production From Sarta-2 Well in Iraq Chevron has started production from the Sarta-2 well at the Sarta field in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, partner Genel Energy said. Gross field production now stands at more than 10,000 B/D. Sarta production is expected to increase from the existing two producing wells as facility optimization continues after production startup. A fresh appraisal drilling campaign is scheduled to begin soon, with the Sarta-5 and Sarta-6 wells set to be drilled back-to-back. Chevron is operator of the Sarta production-sharing contract (50%) with partners Genel Energy (30%) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (20%). Colombia Eyes Licensing Round Results in November Colombia is expected to soon reveal the schedule for its 2021 licensing round offering 32 blocks for oil and gas exploration, with results expected in November. In 2020, the nation awarded three areas to Canada-based companies Parex Resources and Canocol Energy despite the double-whammy of crashing crude demand and a global pandemic. With oil prices on the mend and an aggressive vaccine dissemination program, Colombia is hopeful that interest in its oil and gas acreage returns to pre-pandemic levels. The National Hydrocarbon Agency (ANH) expects to award at least half of the available tracts, which are part of more than 500 areas identified by the ANH in the country and include mature fields, emerging basins, and bordering areas. Exploration in Colombia fell dramatically in 2020 with only 18 wildcats drilled vs. the 45 planned, with most of the expected investment deferred to 2021-2022. While the country has allowed pilot projects testing for unconventional oil, there currently is a ban on fracking operations in the country. Israel Begins Prep Work for Fourth Offshore Round Israel’s Ministry of Energy has announced plans to launch the fourth offshore bidding round (OBR 4) for exploration licenses in the country’s exclusive economic zone soon. OBR 4 is part of a multiyear program to encourage the exploration and development of Israel’s natural resources to provide low-cost, environmentally friendly energy to Israel’s consumers and businesses and to develop markets for Israeli natural gas beyond its borders. As in OBR 2, the Ministry is planning to offer several zones to qualified companies, with each zone comprising approximately four licenses having a total area of up to 1600 sq km. Around 25 exploration licenses (blocks) have been mapped and will be grouped into six clusters. The exact dates of the stages of the bid round and grouping of the licenses in clusters will be determined later. No decision has yet been made on the winner of the license for natural gas and oil exploration in Block 72 in the third competitive bid round carried out in 2020. The Ministry will announce the formal commencement of OBR 4 and its delineation in the near future and provide detailed information on its website www.energy-sea.energy.gov.il at that time. Exxon Drills Dud at Bulletwood Offshore Guyana Exxon encountered noncommercial hydrocarbons with a test of its Bulletwood prospect in the Canje Block in the Guyana-Suriname basin. The well, located in 2846 m of water, was drilled to its planned target depth of 6690 m using drillship Stena Carron. Data collection from the Bulletwood-1 well confirms the presence of the Guyana-Suriname petroleum system and the potential prospectivity of the Canje Block, said partner Westmount Energy. Bulletwood-1 was the first of three scheduled wells to be drilled on the block in 2021. Wells Jabillo-1 and Sapote-1 are expected to spud over the coming months. Exxon operates the Canje Block via its Esso Exploration and Production Guyana unit, which has a 35% stake. Total has 35%, JHI 17.5%, and Mid-Atlantic Oil & Gas 12.5. Westmount holds a 7.7% stake in JHI. While the well results were disappointing, Exxon’s success rate in the area is still around 80% from 18 wells and expects its production from the region to reach 750,000 B/D by 2026. Neptune Earmarks $150 Million for Exploration and Appraisal in 2021 UK-based independent Neptune Energy said its exploration and appraisal spend for 2021 will remain flat at around $150 million. The company said it had up to 11 wells planned for the year including followup wells at the Dugong and Maha discoveries as well as a wild-cat at Dugong Tail. Dugong was discovered in the Norwegian portion of the North Sea in 2020. Neptune believes the prospect holds between 40–120 million BOE. Dugong is located 158 km west of Florø, Norway, at a water depth of 330 m, and is close to existing production facilities. The Dugong prospect comprises two reservoirs that lies at a depth between 3250–3500 m. The Maha discovery offshore East Kalimantan is estimated to hold gas resources in excess of 600 Bcf. In 2019, Neptune and its partners, Eni (operator) and Pertamina, were awarded the West Ganal production-sharing contract that holds the Maya find. An exploration well targeting the Dugong Tail prospect, adjacent to the south of the Dugong find, is slated for the third quarter of this year and will be drilled using Odjfell semisubmersible Deepsea Yantai. Interest Wanes in Norway’s Arctic Frontier Seven companies applied for new acreage in the Barents Sea in Norway’s latest licensing round, down from 26 in a similar round in 2013. The government had offered 125 new blocks in eight frontier regions of the Barents. More than 60% of the undiscovered hydrocarbons offshore Norway are in the Barents frontier, according to the nation’s petroleum directorate. However, appetites for frontier drilling have diminished as oil prices weakened and recent results from the region have disappointed. Companies that applied for the new acreage round were Norske Shell, Equinor, Idemitsu Petroleum Norge, Ineos E&P Norge, Lundin Norway, OMV Norge, and Var Energi. Oman Transfers Ownership of Massive Block 6 The government of Oman has transferred its stake in one of the Middle East’s largest oil blocks to a newly established firm. By royal decree, the new, state-controlled Energy Development Oman (EDO) will hold the country’s 60% stake in Block 6. The stake was moved from Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), another government-run company. Oman, which is struggling under a soaring budget deficit, is looking to finance its spending by leveraging its energy assets. Block 6 has a production capacity of 650,000 BOED. Shell holds 34% in the block, while Total holds the remaining 4%. The government appointed Haifa Al Khaifi as head of EDO in January. She joined from PDO and is also chairwoman of the Saudi Arabian unit of State Street Corp., the Boston-based custodian and money manager. EDO will also be able to invest abroad and deal in renewable-energy products.

This study examines courtship and activities leading to courtship among Japanese youths. Courtship is an important topic because it influences the chances of eventual marriage. The analyses of the Japanese Life Course Panel Survey show 42 percent of young unmarried people without a partner actively sought a dating partner during the past year. The most popular activity among both men and women was asking friends for introductions. Men tended to engage in partner-search activities when they were highly educated, had a full-time job, intended to get married, and had opportunities to meet the opposite sex. Among women, the intention to marry was the key factor in predicting the likelihood of partner-search activities, in addition to family assets. The effect of the partner search on the chances of finding a partner appears to be greatest for the men and women least likely to engage in partner searches.

The Modular Emergency Medical System (MEMS) is a flexible and scalable model for community-based response to all catastrophic emergencies. This paper highlights the development of MEMS at the local and regional levels, including training exercises to demonstrate MEMS capabilities, implementation strategies, and its role in the H1N1 response and vaccination clinics. The MEMS was introduced in 2002 as a bioterrorism response by the US Army Edgewood Biological and Chemical Command (ECBC). All-hazards MEMS, as part of a Regional Response System (RRS), was developed by the New England Center for Emergency Preparedness (NECEP) working with state and federal partners. The MEMS presents a modular response framework to mobilize communities and local resources to meet the medical surge demands during a catastrophic event. The modular components of MEMS empower a community-based response to catastrophic emergencies. The Neighborhood Emergency Help Center (NEHC) provides triage and initial treatment, or can function as a point for dispensing prophylaxis medications or vaccinations. During a medical surge, the Acute Care Center (ACC) moves non-critical patients outside of the hospital setting, creating more space for critical care patients. The Community Outreach (CO) module supports casualties recovering in their own homes, under quarantine, and other home-care support. The Casualty Transportation System (CTS) operates between MEMS components, patients' homes and outside of the affected area, meeting all transfer needs. The Medical Control Center (MCC) and Multi-Agency Coordinating Entity (MACE) provide command, control, and coordination of community emergency medical services (EMS), hospital, and public health response assets. Local, regional, and statewide exercises have demonstrated the capabilities of MEMS in Northern New England. The MEMS system, specifically with the MACE concept, was used in New Hampshire during the 2009 H1N1 event. These proven implementation strategies will assist local communities in developing and refining all-hazards response plans.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the specific role of joint ventures and other strategic alliances in Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) carried out by Chinese Multinationals Corporations in Central Africa. After exploring the extent to which the use of Sino‑Western joint ventures has helped Chinese firms to improve their technical and managerial skills both in domestic and foreign markets, the focus shifts to Central African countries members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). The result is that joint ventures have become a major vehicle for Chinese multinationals firms to channel FDI, thus supporting the hypothesis that in the region under study this strategy allows them to guarantee the supply of raw materials (oil and mining products: copper, cobalt, gold, diamond,..), as part of a “package deals” linking FDI, Chinese Aid and Trade, also known as “Angolan model”; to conquer foreign markets (for technology and manufactured goods “Made in China”) and; to a lesser extent, to acquire strategic assets (brands, technological innovation, managerial skills). The commitment of Chinese stateowned MNCs through the “package deals” appears to be the keystone of stability and sustainability of Chinese FDI in Central Africa and in the continent In conclusion, the expectation is that the flow of Chinese FDI to Central Africa, should contribute to the process of sustainable development in recipient countries, provided that adequate political and economic governance is guaranteed. A pre‑requisite is to achieve institutional change, from a rent‑seeking to a developmental behavior at the state level, the result being an enhanced capacity to promote engineering potential, through the strengthening of human capital, and to negotiate transfer of technology and know‑how, with emerging countries partners, especially BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa)

What explains the growing gap in marriage rates between socioeconomic groups? We present a robust stylized fact not previously documented: marriage rates are higher for individuals with more assets. We argue this may be driven by marriage and cohabitation becoming increasingly similar in a number of ways except for the way assets become marital property to be divided upon divorce in marriage while they remain individual property in the case of cohabitation. We propose that ownership of assets may provide “insurance” to the partner making individually costly, but jointly optimal, investments in children, thus raising the value of marriage.

Purpose The third sector is a producer of trust and positive social interactions, while the mafias destroy trust and social norms. Confiscation of assets and reusing confiscated assets are important tools from an economic and symbolic point of view for contrasting the mafias and promoting a sustainable and fair economy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of the third sector for reusing confiscated assets. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on a theoretical analysis of why a third sector role is utilized for reusing confiscated assets, thus focusing on the economic, social and cultural dimensions. Italian legislation and data are presented for showing the relevant and innovative role of the third sector for reusing confiscated assets. A case study of the city of Forlì, based in Northern Italy, is presented and is of particular interest because it is a part of Italy that does not have a historical presence of the mafias. The University of Bologna is now a partner of the project through the Observatory of Legality. Five hectares of confiscated, urban land have been given to two social cooperatives for organic agriculture and social gardening, which are managed by disadvantaged people working in the cooperatives. Findings The case study offers useful implications for other national and international situations. The results support that the third sector can be an effective partner in managing and restoring the goods to their community. Research limitations/implications A suggested focus on a European framework toward a more integrated approach for reusing confiscated assets. Practical implications An opportunity for policy decisions to be made toward a stronger approach for reusing confiscated assets via the third sector and civil society actors, starting from positive cases, such as the Forlì case study. Social implications Possibility of a stronger civic engagement for reusing confiscated assets previously owned by mafias. Originality/value Scaling up from a pioneering activity to a large-scale network of social enterprises and partnerships could make the difference.

According to the juridical analysis of partner liabilities in bankruptcy process at CV Agro Sawita Mandiri Perkasa, the Director of CV Agro Sawita Mandiri Perkasa had postponed the payment of debts that have been due. It aimed to determine the judge’s consideration in making bankruptcy decisions and partner liabilities. This paper applies a normative juridical writing method. In addition, it draws the conclusion that the commercial court had obtained facts or circumstances which were simply proven that the requirement to declare bankruptcy, as stipulated in Article 2 paragraph (1) of the UUK-PKPU, had been fulfilled. Therefore, related to Article 8 paragraph (4), the judge must grant the bankruptcy petition. Partner liabilities, in the case of bankruptcy, mean that unlimited partner is liable for receivables to personal assets. An unlimited partner, who invests capital in partnership and involves personal property, is included the act of making an agreement. Moreover, if the limited partner participates in an agreement and action that can be equated with the unlimited partner, as what is stipulated in Article 21 of KUHD, the limited partner must also be liable to personally bear all CV debts in solidarity.
