Annotation:

This paper presents results from a study of the language production of native speakers and advanced learners. Four groups often speakers (native French, native Italian, Italian learners of French, French learners of Italian) performed a picture description task, and a comparison was made between the information contained in the productions of natives vs. learners, and the linguistic means used to convey this information. It was found that the processing of identical chunks of information ranged along a continuum from the analytic to the synthetic, from learners to natives, respectively. Two examples of this differential processing are discussed in detail: firstly, the division of the discourse into main structure and side structure, and secondly, the locating of entities in the picture. The former distinction emerges much more clearly in learner than in native production, and for the latter function, learners resort more frequently than native speakers to temporal adverbs such as puis/più and particles such as aussi/anche, in addition to purely spatial means. Overall, it is shown that learners have a more neutral way of processing the task (Von Strutterheim's "prototypische Bearbeitung"), and it is argued in conclusion that it is precisely this charactristic of learner production which allows insights into both the structure of (descriptive) discourse and the language production process.

Résumé Ce travail compare les effets du feedback correctif (FC) direct et indirect sur la réécriture du texte et les subséquentes productions de 26 apprenants francophones de l’italien LV3. L’impact de leur engagement lors du traitement du FC est également évalué. Les apprenants ont été répartis en trois groupes (feedback direct, feedback indirect et groupe contrôle). Le protocole d’enquête a prévu un pré-test, une phase d’administration du FC, ainsi qu’un post-test immédiat et différé. Les groupes expérimentaux obtiennent de meilleurs résultats par rapport au groupe contrôle dans la réécriture du texte et dans les productions subséquentes. À un niveau d’engagement plus élevé lors du traitement du FC correspondent de meilleurs résultats dans la réécriture du texte. Le FC indirect conduit les apprenants à s’engager davantage dans le traitement, ce qui leur permet de corriger leurs erreurs dans la réécriture. Cet effort serait atténué, dans le plus long terme, par le fait de ne pas savoir si leurs hypothèses de résolution sont correctes. Le FC direct, qui donne de l’input en langue cible et la possibilité de le traiter immédiatement, porte les apprenants à améliorer davantage la correction de leurs subséquentes productions.

The intex lexical parser processes linguistic units of four formal types: morphemes, simple words, compound words and frozen expressions. Frozen expressions are units spelled in the form of non-contiguous sequences of tokens (eg. take ... into account), and their recognition requires computation traditionally performed by syntactic parsers. Over 30,000 French frozen expressions have been described in the tables Cxx of the lexicon-grammar. We show how to use these tables to automatically construct FSTs that are capable of recognizing and tagging frozen expressions in texts. Representing the result as tags poses some formal problems that we discuss.

AbstractDepuis les travaux de Chomsky et Rosenbaum dans les années soixante, la question du contrôle des infinitives constitue une sorte de lieu commun en linguistique, en ce sens que toutes les théories se doivent désormais d'en rendre compte, et que la littérature sur le sujet est abondante – au moins en ce qui concerne l'anglais. On se propose ici de réexaminer, à partir des données du fiançais, les fondements empiriques de la distinction devenue notoire entre verbes dits ‘à contrôle’ et verbes dits ‘à montée’: il apparaît que cette distinction est loin d'êcirc;tre toujours évidente, et qu'elle est de nature fondamentalement sémantique plutôt que syntaxique. Les résultats de ce réexamen nous amènent à discuter le traitement du contrôle récemment proposé en HPSG, et à suggérer un traitement alternatif du problème de la sélection du contrôleur.

ABSTRACTCommunication abilities are known to decline with age. In daily life, such abilities are frequently of the non-literal type, which require more cognitive resources to be processed. Since these resources tend to diminish with age, this study seeks to identify a possible effect of age on non-literal language abilities. Forty young and 40 older adults of two different education levels were compared on their non-literal and literal language abilities. Results suggest that age does not affect the processing of non-literal language but could affect some preliminary components of the task, thought to require more cognitive resources. This study does not provide direct evidence to suggest that elderly participants experience specific difficulties in processing non-literal language.

This paper deals with automatic structuring of semantic values in a dictionary of synonyms. The data we used were first extracted from seven French published dictionnaries of synonyms and then merged to obtain the files we worked on. We explain here why a discrete mathematic representation of synonymic relation is not sufficient to produce a semantic structure (that represents the different meanings of a term but also their overlapping). Then we propose a continuous representation (using data analysis) that ables the machine to produce for each term its semantic values. The system also labels these values with prototypic synonyms and detects synonyms that share different semantic "axes" with the headword. It should be noted that these semantic spaces are obtained automatically for each headword from a homogeneous list of synonyms.

Résumé Parmi les différences qui opposent les deux grands courants de grammaires formelles du XXe siècle, celles qui concernent le traitement de l’ordre des mots sont restées jusqu’à aujourd’hui peu traitées. Pourtant, les premières grammaires catégorielles (de 1935 à 1959) présentent une conception de l’ordre des mots qui tranche de celle mise en oeuvre dans le modèle trans-formationnel chomskien (1957) et leur originalité sur ce point mérite l’attention. La syntaxe d’Ajdukiewicz (1935), la grammaire bidirectionnelle de Bar-Hillel (1953) et le calcul syntaxique associatif de Lambek (1958, 1959) s’accordent en effet à gérer l’ordre en le faisant intervenir simultanément à tous les niveaux d’analyse. L’article précise le traitement de l’ordre des mots dans ces trois premières grammaires catégorielles et les compare entre elles de manière à dégager la portée qu’ont eu à un niveau conceptuel les modifications que ces différents auteurs ont introduites dans la notation de l’ordre.

Grammar of dates: Preliminary study to their automatic treatment. The automatic analysis of dates in a text requires a precise description of all the possible forms. This article presents a detailed study of the sentence Ceci est arrivé le jeudi 3 avril 1986 à huit heure cinq (this happened thursday april the third 1986 at five past eight) according to the transformational methods developed by Z.S. Harris and M. Gross. This sentence is considered as derived from a more complete one where genitives have been introduced and whose different steps of derivation are nearly all attested (sometimes in old French). The sentences obtained in this way are analysed either by the replacement of the definite article by another determinant, or by its deletion. For each determinant, an automaton is described which identifies the various attested forms. Finally, the influence on the previous forms of modifiers and conjunctions is studied. There follows a short description of the calendar and the resulting constraints.

Having rejected the assumption that there is a necessary link between language and communication, relevance theory holds that languages are indispensable not for communication, but for information processing, and information processing is their essential function. And the distinction between the descriptive and interpretive use of language settles the disputes upon translatability and untranslatability. From the relevance-theoretic point of view, translation falls naturally under the interpretive use of language: translation is intended to restate in one language what someone else said or wrote in another language. It means that different utterances can be used to express the same meaning, while the same meaning can be expressed in different ways. Interpretive use entails translatability. As to how closely the language of the target text resembles that of the source text, the answer is that it is a matter of degree. However, in any case, the target language used should fulfill the requirements of the principle of relevance: it is relevant enough for it to be worth the reader’s effort to read and it is the highest level of relevance that the translator is capable of achieving given the means and goals. Résumé Ayant rejeté l’hypothèse d’un lien nécessaire entre la langue et la communication, la théorie de la pertinence affirme que les langues sont indispensables non pour la communication, mais bien pour le traitement de l’information, et que le traitement de l’information est leur fonction essentielle. La distinction entre l’utilisation descriptive et interprétative de la langue règle les controverses sur la traduisibilité et l’intraduisibilité. Du point de vue de la théorie de la pertinence, la traduction relève naturellement de l’utilisation interprétative d’une langue : la traduction a pour but de reformuler dans une langue ce que quelqu’un a dit ou écrit dans une autre. Cela signifie que des énoncés différents peuvent être utilisés pour exprimer une même signification, bien qu’une même signification puisse s’exprimer de différentes manières. Une utilisation interprétative engendre une traduisibilité. La réponse à la question de savoir à quel point la langue du texte cible doit ressembler à celle du texte source, est une question de degré. Cependant, la langue cible utilisée devrait en tout cas répondre aux exigences du principe de pertinence : elle est suffisamment pertinente pour justifier l’effort du lecteur pour la lire et elle est le niveau de pertinence le plus élevé que le traducteur est capable d’atteindre, étant donné les moyens et les objectifs.

Grâce à une analyse du contenu des magazines Closer et Voici, du 27 janvier au 18 mai 2012, sont ici cernées deux stratégies originales de couverture de l’élection présidentielle par la presse de célébrités française. D'une part – et c'est un changement significatif par rapport à 2007 – les deux magazines accordent une place officielle à la campagne en lui consacrant des rubriques spécifiques, inspirées par le traitement télévisuel de cette actualité politique. D'autre part, dans le reste de leur espace éditorial, Voici et Closer affichent leur fidélité aux grandes caractéristiques d'un discours people avant tout centré sur le féminin et l'apparence. Aussi observe-t-on deux discours parallèles, mais désarticulés: un traitement « chaud » sur le mode de l'infodivertissement en même temps qu'une tentative de rejouer la campagne de 2007, largement décalée par rapport à l'actualité, en réponse à des impératifs mythologiques.
