Today, with the strong return of traditional culture, the integration of the two will deeply affect the protection of traditional handicrafts and the field of cultural communication. The industrialized production mode has gradually replaced the labor-intensive production mode, and handicrafts have gradually faded out of the public consumption field. The brain drain is serious, and many handicrafts with a long history have no successors. Under the background of AI(artificial intelligence) empowerment, this paper combines AI with traditional handicraft skills, and makes an in-depth study on the inheritance and dissemination of traditional handicraft skills. On this basis, it further thinks about the relationship between traditional handicraft skills display and experience, and the relationship between technology and experience, and studies the change of design concept from technology-oriented to human experience-oriented in traditional handicraft skills display design, and explores the development trend of experience design concept in future traditional handicraft skills display design. Develop the path and method of innovation, protection and inheritance with the comprehensive digital virtual traditional handicraft skill framework. The integration of AI and traditional culture will inevitably broaden and upgrade the path of inheritance and innovation of traditional handicraft skills, and make it achieve new development.

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, handicraft design has developed from artificial design to artificial intelligence design. Traditional handicraft design has the problems of long time consumption and low output, so it is necessary to improve the process technology. Artificial intelligence technology can provide optimized design steps in handicraft design and improve design efficiency and process level. Handicrafts are regarded as important social products and exist in people’s daily life. In the current society, many people do handicrafts and there are major exhibitions. Furthermore, the display of handicrafts is also very grand and shocking. In the design of handicrafts, the traditional design method cannot completely keep up with the production speed and efficiency of handicrafts. Therefore, this paper adopts the fusion multi-intelligent decision algorithm of multi-node branch design in the design method of handicraft. The algorithm model combination is used to analyze and design the layout of the handicraft, which speeds up the design efficiency and production of the handicraft. In this paper, two intelligent algorithms will be used for fusion; they are genetic algorithm and GA-PSO fusion algorithm obtained by particle swarm optimization and they are embedded in handicraft design method for application through mathematical model construction and function construction. After comparing the performance parameter index data of three intelligent algorithms and GA-PSO fusion algorithm, it is obtained that GA-PSO fusion algorithm is 97% correct and has 82% readability, 72% robustness, and 61% structure, making it have better important indicators. Four algorithms optimize each design problem in all aspects of handicraft design at present. Design efficiency, image distribution rate, image optimization degree, and image clarity are compared by simulation experiments. Compared with three intelligent algorithms, traditional design methods, and manual design methods, GA-PSO fusion algorithm can effectively improve the design method and design effect of handicrafts with 92.1% design efficiency, 82.7% image distribution rate, 94.3% image optimization degree, and 84% layout void rate. Finally, the space complexity experiment of four algorithms shows that GA-PSO algorithm can achieve 9.73 dispersion with 11.42 space complexities, which makes the dimension reduction relatively stable, and the algorithm can maintain stability in the design and application of handicrafts.

Traditional handicrafts have a time-honored history and tremendous cultural value in China. However, even with the strong impact of globalization and consumerism in recent years, design-oriented scientific thinking and sustainable development models are not yet available. Based on Stanford Design Thinking, this study explores the prospect of the sustainable development of traditional handicrafts. First, a literature review and analysis were conducted to show that design science, as a bridge between natural science and humanities, aims to improve the important methods and research tools for the sustainable development of traditional handicrafts. Then, we studied ceramic product design via workshops. Methods such as action research, expert questionnaires, and factor analysis were adopted to establish 24 “indicators of the sustainable value of handicraft design” and four value dimensions, namely, “material and innovative value”, “handicraft and cultural value”, “empirical and local value”, and “sharing and interactive value”. Next, an experimental method was employed to make design product prototypes according to the design-thinking procedure. These prototypes were measured and evaluated with the indicators to form an evaluation report. In addition, the exploration of the sustainable development of traditional handicraft design also contributes to the establishment of a sustainable development model of design thinking. It was demonstrated that scientific design is the current trend and future of the sustainable development of traditional handicrafts. Finally, this study put forward five dynamic thinking methods and design strategies, providing the most direct methods and theoretical evidence for the sustainable development of traditional handicraft design. Finally, taking design thinking as the sustainable design framework, five dynamic thinking approaches were proposed: Thinking with the body, thinking with the mind, thinking with the heart, thinking with the hands, and thinking with the soul. Five design strategies were also proposed: Enquiry learning, values education, future problem solving, experiential design, and appropriate assessment. These approaches and strategies provide the most direct method and theoretical basis for the future of sustainable design regarding traditional Chinese handicraft products.

This paper proposes a new Chinese traditional handicraft learning mode through embodied interaction using WebAR technology. It details how emergent technologies for cognitive learning can enhance learning in the teaching of a traditional handicraft. A study is presented where students learn about traditional handicrafts with a whole-body interactive simulation utilizing WebAR devices, and this is compared to traditional methods using a desktop version for the simulation. Results show that the Chinese traditional handicraft learning mode based on WebAR affords embodied interaction and improves learning between real context and virtual devices; thus WebAR devices enhance embodied interaction of traditional handicraft simulations. This contribution is highly relevant for users who aim to learn and be creative in different contexts that deliver new forms of Chinese traditional handicraft learning.

To enhance the competitiveness of the traditional handicraft industry, providers should offer service experiences using their products (i.e., servitization) instead of merely selling them. Effective management for servitization in the traditional handicraft industry must consider the differences in customers’ prior knowledge. Nevertheless, previous studies have overlooked how this knowledge about traditional handicrafts impacts service experiences. This study explores which factors of consumer behavior (during services) and service outcomes (post-services) are affected by customers’ prior knowledge about a traditional handicraft. An organic food restaurant booth was provided at an annual summer festival about pottery as an experiment, and data were collected on customers’ meal experiences with a pottery plate through a questionnaire. The findings suggest that customers’ prior knowledge about a traditional handicraft promotes their search for information from service resources (i.e., organic foods) which are integrated with the traditional handicraft and their creativity during services, thereby changing their understanding of service resources and increasing satisfaction with service experience. This study contributes to services marketing by identifying the factors of during and post-services that are affected by customers’ prior knowledge about a traditional handicraft in the context of servitization.

Annotation:
The goal of this thesis is to investigate the manufacture of metalworking ceramics in late prehistoric Scotland (ca 1000BC – AD800) from the perspective of ceramic technology and with the aim to reconstruct social and material trajectories. This has been implemented through the use of an integrated analytical methodology, interpreted by developing current theories on technology. Previous studies of metalworking ceramics in Scotland have rarely paid full attention to ceramic technology; research has instead focused on metallurgical issues such as metal identification and material morphology. This is central for answering questions regarding metallurgical processes, but fails to answer important questions regarding the technology and manufacture of the ceramic material. The successful production of moulds and crucibles requires that a craft specialist has expert skills in the preparation and firing of clay as well as understanding of the process and design of metal casting. This makes metalworking ceramics an important resource for investigating variation in individual skill and experience, cultural traditions, and scale of production. The main focus is on moulds and crucibles, but parallels, both in terms of method and theory, are made to other types of metalworking ceramics and pottery. The technological relationship between pottery and metalworking ceramics is therefore a vital link in the assessment of production and technological traditions. In addition, clays from a number of sites have been sampled, with the goal to monitor the utilization of clays for the production of different ceramic materials. Materials from nine primary sites, from Traprain Law (East Lothian) in the south to Mine Howe (Orkney) in the north, are central to the discussion of ceramic technologies. The context of casting and crafts from further sites in Scotland and beyond has been essential in the reconstruction of casting production in the late prehistoric period. Developing from ideas of technology as an active process, this study has investigated the collection and preparation of clays to make different ceramic materials. This investigation has employed a range of analytical techniques frequently applied to the study of archaeological ceramics, including ceramic petrography, Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Spectrometry and X-Ray Diffraction. The focus has been on technology; studies of provenance are auxiliary to the broader questions. It is a central conclusion of this work that the production of metalworking ceramics saw a development towards a more specialised function and technology during the late prehistoric period, and that this development was closely related to material traditions, to some extent transcending wider social trajectories. This research, highlighting particular and general technologies, has showed that the study of ceramic technology of moulds and crucibles can be a valuable resource for the study metallurgical production and technology.

This doctoral thesis aims at providing a better knowledge of basketry traditions and plantbased raw materials that were used for this craft in the Bashiic islands located in Southern Taiwan and Northern Philippines. These islands are excellent context to carry out ethnobotanical studies: Batanes and Lanyu Islands are both isolated contexts and host numerous vegetal taxa, most of which are indigenous or even endemic and can be used as markers of contact. Handicraft is mostly made of plant fibres of specific properties, such as limited length, flexibility, strength, un-putrescibility, among others. Creating a reference collection of Ivatan (Batanes Islands) and Tao (Yami) (Lanyu Island) present-day handicraft will be useful in identifying and comparing plants and the techniques used for manufacturing ancient handicrafts. This type of analysis can be applied to archaeological artefacts where botanical micro remains- such as anatomical parts, starch grains and phytoliths- may have been preserved. Some baskets which are used to protect bodies and things are made into a knotting-tying technique employing Musa textilis- abaca and other banana species fibers, these baskets are representing a unique knowledge. Musa spp. status within other useful forest products can be of great interest to understand human and plant propagation through times, especially the Austronesian diaspora.

This study investigates whether geographical indication may represent an instrument to support socioeconomic and human development of women who are members of the Association for the Development of the Irish Lace from Divina Pastora – ASDEREN and work with Irish lace. The methodological framework consists of a case study based on interviews with three different groups of Irish lace artisans as well as with representatives of public and private institutions which are or might be involved with ASDEREN. This work shows that products made of Irish lace need to be in line with customers’ needs and tastes, maintaining their authenticity and originality at the same time. Capacity building of new artisans and development of experienced artisans’ skills are considered mechanisms which may foster the activity, although they are not sufficient to guarantee its sustainability. Irish lace shall increase its contribute to family income; in this case geographical indication could play an important role by linking handicraft products to their place of origin – Divina Pastora (Sergipe) – and thus leading to attract more customers interested in the differentiated nature of these products. However, in order to achieve effective results, the cooperation among some institutions with ASDEREN should continue along with public policies focused on strengthening the production of Irish lace within the community and supporting the process of socioeconomic and human development. All of this shall be in accordance with the economist Amartya Sen’s capability approach, empowering people to live their lives the way they wish.

Traditional technologies are revelations of knowledge, skill, and wisdom of ancestors that have been used to facilitate and enhance the performance of socio-economic activities, overcome environmental challenges, and magnify symbolic presentations of cultural and spiritual engagements. Traditional technologies are still practiced in many communities despite the strides made in the advancement of modern technologies. The socio-economic significance of traditional technologies in the context of Ethiopia is even more profound. There are hardly social, economic, and spiritual activities that are not, directly or indirectly, influenced by the application of traditional technologies. The irony is, however, they are not appreciated and conserved in spite that they have been proving a sustained significance across generations while, to the contrary, modern technologies are even staggering to outlive the stage of product introduction. Although still proving to be useful, traditional technologies have been marginalized as if they are symbols of backwardness belonging to the past as irrelevant to the modern day settings. It was, therefore, the urge to look into this dilemma that became the basis for the initiation to conduct a research on the captioned topic. The study has endeavored to address how traditional technologies, specifically that of Ethiopia, are able to sustain contrary to extant theoretical predictions of technologies, and investigate why they have been deterred from getting the conservation and transformation they deserve in spite of the socio-economic significant role they have continued to play as capitulated in the statement of the problem. In addressing the statement of the problem, the paradigm of the world outlook within which the research was situated is found to be related to the Critical Theory paradigm. As a result, a qualitative research methodology based on a case study design was framed and a longitudinal field study on the sampled cases was conducted. The data generated from the study were ix filtered, coded, organized, categorized, and ultimately analyzed and interpreted using apparent analytic models until saturated and triangulated findings were established. Accordingly, the core constructs that has been defining the fate of traditional technologies were induced and their impact in deterring or promoting the conservation and transformation of traditional technologies were synthesized. Based on the outcomes of data analysis and interpretation, appropriate methods of reshaping the societal attitude and orientation in terms of conserving and transforming traditional practices are proposed as induced recommendations ultimately requiring a timely intervention.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in methodologies for productive protection of traditional craftsmanship, the motivation for which may be to protect intangible cultural heritage or to improve the quality of life of particular communities or ethnic groups. This approach has already been widely adopted in the social enterprise sector (social enterprises are an innovative type of organization which make use of a commercial development strategy to earn a surplus that can be applied to solving social or environmental problems). The present study explores how the intermediary mechanism for promoting productive protection of traditional craftsmanship that is formed through the combination of economic thinking with social enterprises’involvement in the productive protection of traditional craftsmanship operates to encouraging artisans to continue to produce craft and to pass their skills and knowledge onto others . The present study makes use of a case study of the Dropenling Handicraft Development Center in Lhasa and Shangri-La , a social enterprise whose mission is to improve skills, knowledge and resources for Tibetan artisans(including farmers living in remote communities, women, and the physically and mentally handicapped) so that they can preserve their heritage, create high quality and innovative products, and earn income and recognition. The Dropenling Handicraft Development Center has been the recipient of UNESCO’s Award of Excellence for Handicrafts in recognition of its achievements. The Center has coordinated the efforts of Tibetan artisans, business enterprises and workshops to arrange local handcrafts workshop tour. The tour offers the rare opportunity meet Tibetan artisans and learn artistic heritage. This study analyses the approach to productive protection of traditional craftsmanship, and shows how the theory and practice of the Dropenling Handicraft Development Center’s efforts to productive protection of traditional craftsmanship are founded on production processes and technical know-how. As social enterprises, the Dropenling Handicraft Development Center are committed to fair trade, and thus artisans receive fair wages. Many of the artisans work at home, around the schedule of their traditional farming activities. The Dropenling Handicraft Development Center does not like conventional business enterprises seeking to maximize profits by focusing on simplifying the process of handicrafts production to reduce costs, along with the development of a Trainer system, undertaking in-depth investigation of Tibet’srapidly-disappearing traditional craftsmanship, the materials used, and the cultural significance of the crafts, and then applying this knowledge to the design process. The flexible operational model adopted by the Center encourages more artisans to continue producing traditional crafts, while helping to improve their craft skills, develop innovative products, and become competitive in the world market.

AbstractThe Colombian Pacific region is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world; however, it is severely threatened by anthropogenic pressures. In addition, armed conflict and poverty are compounding factors causing the loss of biodiversity and cultural identity. In response to this situation, the Wounaan-Nonam original people of Puerto Pizario and Santa Rosa de Guayacán declared five Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) in 2008. We conducted a study to highlight the link between the conservation of biocultural memory and contributions to human well-being, particularly to human health, in indigenous socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS). Since 2013, the research-action-participation methodology has been applied to recover ecological traditional knowledge on how ancestors managed nature and elements associated with their cosmovision. Following the TNC conservation of areas methodology, eight biological and cultural conservation values were identified for the IPAs and 5-year management plans for conservation were formulated. As a result of this process, we created a tool that involves traditional knowledge to administer the total 1850 hectares covered by the five IPAs. We also found that the main challenges faced by indigenous communities in the management of IPAs as an integral part of the indigenous SEPLS are associated with weak organisational and governance processes. Additionally, we identified the main opportunities ecosystem services offer in the IPAs, which enhance the quality of life and health of the original peoples and ecosystems at a regional level. Finally, the making of handicrafts is identified as an opportunity in these SELPS, as it represents an alternative for generating income through sustainable productive chains in biotrade strategies.

Huayao cross-stitch is a traditional handicraft with distinctive regional characteristics in China. Aesthetically appealing with rich cultural implications, Huayao cross-stitch has been listed in the first national list of intangible cultural heritage of China since 2006. With the rapid development of cultural consumption globally, the innovative design and industrial transformation potential have made traditional handicrafts highly-valued resources, and the analysis of cultural representation and multi-value of traditional handicrafts is the basis of cultural reuse. From the perspective of cultural ecology, the current study aims to summarize the spatial organization mode of Huayao cross-stitch patterns and conduct a deep analysis of the concepts and beliefs represented in Huayao cross-stitch by examining 70 samples of cross-stitch skirt pieces collected from the composition and semantics of patterns. The study then analyzes the basis of multi-value of the Huayao cross-stitch from both aesthetic and cultural dimensions, providing a research basis for the innovation and regeneration of Huayao’s cross-stitch, through which its value can be seen in contemporary times as well as in the future.
