Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn recent years, sustainability has emerged as a critical concern. Many countries have started to address environmental and social problems through national policies and strategies, new partnerships, and promoting sustainable tourism practices across the tourism industry. These measures shall stimulate growth in the long term while maintaining a balance between environmental protection, promoting economic benefits, establishing social justice, maintaining cultural integrity, and shifting from mass tourism to long-term sustainable solutions. Community-based tourism (CBT) has been considered one of the efficient tools for sustainable tourism development, especially in rural areas, suburbs, and mountainous areas. Although there is much research on the benefits, success, or failure of CBT projects, not much attention has been paid to assessing the sustainability of CBT and examining its links to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to establish CBT as a tool to support sustainable development. This doctoral research addressed this gap by conducting a case study in rural areas of Hoi An.To advance the understanding of CBT and its role in the sustainable development of the local, the research adopted a mixed methodology, including quantitative and qualitative data collection methods; documentary methods were also employed. Research findings have, therefore, been enriched and verified by each other and have helped improve the reliability of the research overall. The service quality and the sustainability of CBT in Hoi An were revealed through the perceptions of tourists and the locals, respectively. The thesis then showed the link between CBT and SGDs to identify CBT as a tool to support sustainable development. The thesis adds distinctive theoretical and methodological contributions to the growing literature on CBT and its links to sustainable local development. The study achieves its objectives of (1) developing the CBT value chain model encompassing key stakeholders and their roles at a local scale, (2) conceptualizing CBT as a tool for sustainable local development, and (3) providing solutions need to be applied to develop sustainable CBT in Hoi An. The thesis will benefit local authorities and CBT practitioners by providing empirical evidence to base policies and strategies that facilitate desired development outcomes. With a strong focus on sustainability and a detailed understanding of local community perspectives, the thesis reinforces the recognition of CBT as a tool for sustainable development worldwide. This thesis encourages implementing and developing CBT in more communities, especially developing countries that aim for sustainable development

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe city of Hôi An, which extends over 63 km2, has been known as the “ancient town” with its world cultural heritage". The territory of the ancient town extends over 30 ha (0.3 km2) and has greeted more than four thousand visitors each day. based on our surveys, we have noticed that evening is the time when the town receives the highest number of tourists; especially domestic tourists. The official nomination of Hôi An as the ancient town by UNESCO has brought it benefits in many fields such as economy, social and culture. However, there are several negative effects coming along with the benefits. In this context, it is concerned that whether the intangible cultural heritage has been managed by people in charge to become an effective mean which can help to spread out the effects and the benefits to other parts of the city for the sustainable development of cultural tourism? Through our methods of qualitative and quantitative analyst, we have studied the differences of behaviors in regards to the use of the intangible cultural heritage by both international tourists and domestic tourists. It finally has been shown in our research that the city has been concerned about deploying the resources of this heritage in order to generate sustainable tourist products. However, it still have not been envisaged creating particular products for each trend of tourist. Our study also have indicated that there are convergences as well as divergences in approaching tourist spaces in the city between international tourists and domestic tourists

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis study examines compatibilities between the existing tourism development plans and the co-operative tourism development agreements as well as evaluates the international collaboration among member countries in the Mekong Delta, namely Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Particular emphasis was placed upon the extent to which the tourism development plans and the co-operative tourism development agreements address issues of nature-based tourism, eco-tourism and adventure travel – soft adventure tourism (“NEAT” tourism). Some effective processes that could facilitate the multi-destination tourism are proposed in order to harmonize the economic development in this region

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSustainable tourism, and the principles with which it is generally associated, has become a major concern not only at global and national but also at local levels as in the case of Nha Trang, an age-old sea-swimming destination in Vietnam. Regarded as one of the leading tourist centers of the country, Nha Trang is now facing with problems of tourism sustainability, particularly from a socio-cultural viewpoint: the exodus of islanders, the shortage of competent personnel in tourism, insufficient involvement of private sectors in the policies for tourism development in Nha Trang, overexploitation of Nha Trang Bay and the decrease in the amount of international tourists. With this awareness, the main question for us would be: Can we consider the actual tourism development in Nha Trang as sustainable from a viewpoint of socio-cultural indicators? In other words, is it possible to satisfy tourists, preserve local tourist resources, help the local community benefit from tourism and get all the factors to participate in the decision-making process? This research presents a double objective. First of all, it is important to analyze tourism in from a point of view based on socio-cultural indicators. At the conclusion of this research, proposals are forwarded so as to compromise two apparently contradictory dynamics: tourism development on the one hand and the preservation of local cultural heritage on the other. With an aim at performing this task well, 901 questionnaires have been handed out to the residents and tourists in Nha Trang, as well as 15 interviews that have been carried out with local authorities. The results of these surveys have been obtained through a research allowed to contact 137 tourist enterprises in Nha Trang. Thanks to this, the results obtained show in the first place that some principles associated to sustainable tourism from a socio-cultural viewpoint are not sufficiently observed in Nha Trang. Among these, the preservation of tourist and cultural resources particularly present lots of concern for the future. All the same, recruitment stability and equitable distribution of benefits arising from tourist operations constitute a basis for worries, similarly to the degree of participation of private sectors in tourism policies. In sum, despite tourists' relative satisfaction concerning the staff now working in tourism and the quality of services offered, the tourism sector demands further training. In order to make Nha Trang's tourism more sustainable from a socio-cultural viewpoint, our prerequisite proposal is to put into operation a plan of renovating Nha Trang’s tourism, by bringing about a well-balanced relationship between the land and the sea, which will hopefully pave the way for diversifying tourist practices, making advantage of inland tourist resources in tourism, assisting the residents to participate further in tourism projects. This performance is accompanied with an operational governance among residents, private factors and public figures involved in the tourism sphere. This solution would aim at increasing the participation of the private sector and promulgating tourism policies, virtually compromising tourism development and preservation of resources
