The objective of the study is to propose a strategy to revitalize Muncie's downtown through cultural tourism. This is seen as a critical catalyst to help preserve the historical fabric of the downtown.Muncie's downtown, with its historical and cultural assets, has an opportunity to attract the tourism, convention, and conference business which in turn can support hotels, restaurants, specialty shops, and entertainment establishments. In view of above, this creative project attempts to revitalize downtown through linking and promoting cultural tourism facilities like museums, theaters and festivals, convention and conference centers, and specialty shops.A transport loop connecting the tourist anchors like Ball State University, Minnitrista Cultural Center, and downtown of has been proposed. The tourist routes in Muncie and to East Central Indiana have been identified to enable the visitors to visit tourist destinations easily. Signage, and banners have been proposed along major routes to give proper orientation to visitors and also to enhance the image of Muncie.A strategy has been outlined for the preservation historical buildings through adaptive reuse. All these proposals have been incorporated as an urban design strategy.

In the context of global competition, Hong Kong has positioned her social and urban infrastructure to foster the advanced service sector activities of urban tourism. The success of the urban area as a place making for tourism is the embedding of sustainable and innovative principles in the planning process and the implementation of the stakeholders and travelers aspirations. A holistic and adaptive public transport planning and alternative transport modes are one of the key issue that contribute to the success of urban tourism development now and the future. For the advancement of travel information technology and infrastructure of urban tourism, it enables more individual travelers rather than conventional group-tour visit to Hong Kong. Those individual travelers are mostly in the form of slow travel where one visits to destinations more slowly overland, stay longer and travel less with the importance of travel experience to a destination engagement with slow modes of transport. This morphology from mass and efficient tourism to newer form of individual and experienced tourism takes forward the notion of queries and justifications of conventional fast and efficient transport planning and modal choice could provide tourist a real understanding of localities of urban culture and detail settings. This dissertation aiming to examine the concept and theory of slow travel in associate with slow mode of transportation application and the potential planning recommendation for urban tourism in Hong Kong. The objective of this research is to see how slow travel theories that had been popularized in overseas countries could be applied in Hong Kong with the support of public transport service and planning enhancement. In this research, the interdisciplinary research to examine of the problem is form a multi-disciplinary approach while the solution and recommendation is form a management perspective –transport and urban planning

ABSTRACT The City of Morro Bay, California – Sign Ordinance Update and Embarcadero District Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan Erik Berg-Johansen This report includes a Draft Sign Ordinance, a Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan, and a background report for each product. The final products were created thought a process involving extensive research, community outreach, and detailed discussions among City of Morro Bay staff. The Sign Ordinance It was discovered that signs are important to business owners and residents due to their effect on both economic and aesthetic issues in communities. This report documents research of scholarly articles, case studies, and community outreach efforts. This report includes survey results and analysis that reveal the opinions of Morro Bay business owners, and also their ideas in regards to the sign ordinance update. According to many business owners, the current sign ordinance is convoluted, virtually unenforced, and unfairly applied. It was the goal of this project to hear what the community desires, and then apply this knowledge to a proposal that residents and business owners in Morro Bay approve of. The proposed sign ordinance aims to be fair and user-friendly, while ultimately enhancing community character and aesthetic quality in the future. Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan The Tourism-Oriented Directional Sign Plan was created to promote tourism in the City of Morro Bay and negate the need for A-frame sign use in the Embarcadero District. The plan includes three alternatives that are intended to spur discussion among the Planning Commission when the proposal is presented. The background report associated with this plan is intended to provide the reasoning behind the proposals, and give readers of the plan background knowledge on directional signs in general. Similar to the sign ordinance background report, this report documents research of scholarly articles, case studies, and community outreach efforts.

This project was designed to aid community design professionals, specifically those professionals associated with "towns and cities that border public lands" (Howe, McMahon, Propst 1997), also known as gateway communities. Many of these towns have already begun a process of planning for future development, realizing the importance of conservation and preservation of their natural resources. By further expanding the goals and scope of town planning, this creative project intends to serve as a promotional resource and model of sustainable community design. More specifically, this creative project intends to provide Gatlinburg city officials with a conceptual master plan for the city's downtown corridor, instituting a combination of SmartCode and Smart Growth strategies with several other innovative strategies in an attempt to produce a sustainable design solution. If used as a guide for new planning and construction, this document should aid inmaintaining a lasting partnership between Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and preserve the Park as a viable natural resource. The solutions produced in this creative project aim to uphold a balance between human settlement and nature and which are environmentally responsible, socially just, and economically viable.Due to the magnitude of change required for many of the proposed development strategies, and to promote consideration for the equity of future generations, the conceptual master planning will be envisioned as a long-range build-out with suggested phasing. Working towards a sustainable goal far into the future will enable local gateway planning and design to become less reactive and promote a vision which the entire community can own.

More than half the world's population lives in urban centers. And, gradually, the demand, by parts of these residents, for attractions, entertainments and experiences, of the urban scene, that condition moments of recreation and vacancy, increases. Cities are talents and knowledge makers since the dawn of civilization, and contemplate a range of services and facilities that are shared between their inhabitants and temporary users, both consumers of the place and their urbanity. This research seeks, through an infometric survey, to present the global cities that stand out in the current scenario and, through a categorization of global indices, to consolidate analysis dimensions to potentiate urban centers by compiling case studies on the these approaches. As contributions of the research, it is understood that there are possibilities to qualify the city and, respectively, its users, through alternatives that can base later studies. Therefore, in this context, urban tourism stands out with its diversity of events and possibility of going through varied experiences and cultures, without suffering from the seasonality of other examples of tourism activity, and in this modality global cities have a fundamental role. In addition to its economic power, its worldwide reputation through tourism and the quality of life of its residents attract the attention of tourists and inspire the urban planning strategies of other cities on the planet.

Safranbolu is among the many other tourism destinations of Turkey practicing sustainable and cultural tourism. Like many tourism centers in Turkey, it had been negatively influenced from economic fluctuations of the 1980s period. However, in spite of other tourism centers, it has not much changed and it has been well protected. The reasons for this protection can be explained that Safranbolu entered the World Heritage List in 1994, and so environmental and sustainable planning approaches are adapted to development of town. While protecting its natural and cultural resources, the town is planned and managed. As a result, it is announced as one of the well protected cities of the world. This thesis discusses development of Safranbolu within these sustainable tourismplanning approaches. It aims to explain how the town has been changed after being a tourism destination and to search positive and negative impacts of tourism. The thesis has four objectives
to describe tourism and tourism planning issues, to explain the evolution of tourism in Safranbolu, to search negative and positive impacts of tourism and finally to provide new recommendations on development of Safranbolu. In this respect, it explores the relations between tourism and planning, investigates cultural and spatial reflections of global tourism in the town. To determine these effects, a survey has been carried out during the summer of 2008. According to this, a sustainable and environmental tourism planning method is suggested for the town.

The Mid America Regional Council, (MARC) is the official metropolitan planning organization for the Greater Kansas City region. MARC received a 4.25 million dollar grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2010 to advance the region’s vision of sustainability through vibrant, green, and connected centers and corridors. From which the CSP (Creating Sustainable Places) initiative was established. Responding to this initiative, eight grant funded Kansas State University students worked in a Rock Island Corridor group. This group showed and described ways of achieving MARC’s and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s goals through the development of Master’s Reports. Reports include design ideas and proposals which MARC and city planning departments might not have developed otherwise. Student collaboration between public and city planning departments informed the development of student ideas. Green trail systems and tourism specifically addresses how the quality of life in the Kansas City Metro Area could be enhanced with the implementation of a cultural trail network. This network would provide access to the Rock Island Corridor, create greenspaces, and establish mixed-use housing districts for potential home and business owners. The Greater Kansas City region population is increasing. Trails, parks, and mixed-use buildings for residents in KC could improve the quality of life for future residents. Adding greenspaces, pedestrian mobility, and entertainment districts in which to find region specific activities could help attract people to redeveloping areas. Green trail systems and tourism’s project area is located between the Sprint Center and the Truman Sports Complex. To resolve problems and dilemmas within this region of Kansas City, a routing plan of a cultural trail network is outlined. This cultural trail features new trail heads, cultural centers, and proposed zoning overlays for park developments and mixed-use housing districts. The trail network created connects the Sprint Center and Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City, Missouri as a tourism link. Tourism destinations and historic sites add to the economic success of KC. Sites are connected to in the routing plan for the cultural trail. This proposal shows one approach for creating sustainable centers in KC.

Bicycling is a method of tourism transportation that is healthy, non-invasive, environmentally responsible, and economically sustainable. It allows freedom, mobility, and sightseeing potential that is not made possible by other modes of transit. Thousands of bicycle tourists travel from all over the globe annually to explore California on touring bikes via established cycling routes and robust determination. Thousands of additional domestic and international visitors take weekend trips, plan family vacations, travel for business, or tour California from abroad, many of whom are excellent candidates for local and regional bicycle touring at a more gentle intensity level. The increasing popularity and prominence of bicycle tourism, among both domestic and international travelers, carries great potential for economic benefit to local communities. Rural and agricultural communities can particularly benefit from bicycle tourism, as these communities do not normally experience the benefits of tourism as significantly as their urban, coastal or mountainous neighbors. Tourism that is developed in accordance with the size, scale, constraints and character of a particular community can have a beneficial effect on the economics and industry of the area. Infrastructure projects to this effect, such as development of a town or regional trail system, wayfinding features, or other resources come with benefits for visitors and locals in the form of recreation, public health, mobility, and access to food, drink, amenities, scenic areas, jobs and commerce. Trails may further improve the economy of the local housing market, as proximity to trails has a positive effect on housing values. Incorporation of agricultural destinations into local tourism planning creates a draw for visitors and can become a mutually beneficial relationship – contributing to the economic stability of the agriculture industry, preserving local farm lands, increasing tourism revenue and educating the public on the importance of local farming. Through careful planning of the touristic components of the destination, rural communities can achieve multifaceted economic benefits of diverse and versatile tourism amenities.

Over the past few decades, the development of coastal areas has become an increasingly contested arena. For many years, tourism in remote coastal areas has been the preserve of a few intrepid campers, surfers and recreational fishers. More recently, however, numbers along parts of the coast have increased rapidly, not only contributing to an expansion of camping activity, but also pressure for more commercially oriented tourism. This has contributed to concerns about the environmental sustainability of tourism in remote coastal areas. Governments have increasingly been faced with the challenge of balancing ecological concerns with the pursuit of economic development. Adding to the complexity are the differing needs and demands of various segments of the tourism market all looking to enjoy particular places. Balancing the demands of campers, backpackers, package tourists and others in a single place is often wrought with conflict. This study explores some of these issues in a remote coastal area in Western Australia. The Ningaloo coast has evolved from a difficult to reach destination used by a small number of campers, to one of Western Australia's most popular tourist destinations in just two decades. The thesis examines the factors underlying the growth and change of tourism in the region, tracing its evolution from a few small rudimentary campsites to proposals for large scale resort developments. Of particular interest to this thesis is how planning and policy processes aim to address developmental pressures and resource use/planning conflicts. Additionally, this study provides an insight into the issues facing the informal, long term camper as the traditional segment of Ningaloo's tourism market. It examines how current planning and policy for the Ningaloo coastline affects this group by reshaping traditional tourism use of the area.

Architecture forms an inherent part of urban tourism. Nevertheless, so far little research has been carried out regarding the interdependencies between urban tourism and architecture in general, as well as contemporary architecture in particular. Furthermore, there is a lack of literature regarding the reasons for contemporary architecture attracting tourism. Therefore, the present thesis is based on two principle research questions: 1. What is the role of contemporary architecture in urban tourism destinations? 2. Why is contemporary architecture attracting tourism? Taking a twofold approach, the theoretical part of the thesis was based on a comprehensive literature review – including a wide variety of related disciplines – and dedicated to the first principle research question. Thus, by means of a contextual view, it was demonstrated that contemporary architecture can play a multitude of important roles in urban tourism, and contribute to the image of an urban destination. Devoted to the second principle research question, the empirical part of the thesis was built on exploratory case study research at the locations of Berlin and Beijing. First, by means of content analysis of travel guidebooks, for both case study locations a sample of contemporary architecture with significance for tourism has been identified. And secondly, for each of the samples’ units of analysis, a specific level of touristic significance, related to different roles (or types) of tourists, has been measured. Furthermore, specific features and characteristics, distinguishing the selected architectures, have been observed and allocated. Using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis techniques, during the ensuing data evaluation, those features and combinations of features with an influence on the touristic significance of contemporary architecture have been identified. As a result, around 50% of the analysed relations showed significant signs of dependency. Important modalities for the touristic significance of contemporary architecture turned out to be, for instance, having a touristic function, being accessible for visitors, being of large size and showing predominance towards the surrounding built environment. However, depending on the evaluated roles of tourists, the results differed.

At the outset, the purpose of this research was to establish a framework that, once in place, could identify and monitor changes in residents' opinions of tourism development in the cities of York, Bath and Chester in England. As well as establishing a framework, it was also anticipated that comparative analysis might well establish a basis for theory development regarding the social impacts of tourism on residents of historic cities in England. As the research developed, it became increasingly apparent that although the studies were providing an interesting benchmark of the social impacts of tourism in historic cities, they said little about residents' opinions regarding the planning actions taken by local government to manage tourism development. The three social impact studies proved interesting in that similarities and differences were found within and between the resident populations. Their most important contribution however is that they: 1) provided a response to the established need for more extensive longitudinal and comparative urban tourism research; 2) documented residents' opinions of tourism in three historic cities; 3) established a reliable sampling methodology for use in urban environments; 4) contributed a most important basis for the subsequent redirection of this doctoral research in that they led to the recognition that the social impacts of tourism should be investigated at the planning action level and not purely on a general level. In recognition of this observation, this research sought to develop a second framework that would enable residents to evaluate the specific tourism planning objectives and actions undertaken by local government. In order to achieve this, three further research phases were designed. The objectives of these phases were: 1) to establish the strategic tourism planning objectives and actions of local government in England (research phase II); 2) to develop a conceptual model which established a valid association of distinct planning actions with specific objectives (research phase II); 3) to investigate the commitment of local government to conducting resident tourism surveys (research phase III); 4) to utilise the information attained in the earlier research phases to develop a new methodology which is operationalised through the development of a computer model (research phase IV); 5) to involve the tourism officers in historic cities in the evaluation of this new methodology in terms of its potential to capture residents' opinions and improve the potential for more meaningful public consultation in the tourism environment (research phase IV).

The car has for a long time been in the center of society planning and has characterized the street network. Therefore, both public parking spaces are required for visitors but also accommodation. The parking spaces can be arranged both inside and outside the local plan. Regardless of the choice of process, construction permits are required for parking facilities. The society is now in a developmental phase where norms and policies is heading for a sustainable development. Many municipalities choose to control the number of parking spaces to promote the choice of alternative transportations.  This study handle smaller coastal municipalities along the west coast which is affected by a drastically increased population during the summer. This increased population is causing a large number of drivers and a major parking demand. The participating municipalities are Båstad, Orust and Tjörn whose practical solutions are compared.  The study is a mapping of the municipalities’ practical solutions and its approach to parking problems during the summer. With the help of this survey, other municipalities can be inspired and guided.  Semi-structured interviews with three different officials in each municipality showed comparative criteria and based on this a result was produced. The three municipalities proved to have different solutions to the parking problem, such as changing the location of parking spaces, alternative transportations or temporary parking spaces. Båstad municipality has chosen to build a larger parking lot outside the city center, where drivers are referred by signage. Orust municipality has arrange rental bikes for visitors and is investing in a new walking and cycling network. Tjörn municipality chooses to set up provisional parking spaces to cover increased needs.

This study examines the reuse potential of industrial land and infrastructure left abandoned or otherwise underutilized. The goal of this study is to open discussion and dialogue into such cases in North American cities that currently are liabilities and offer guidelines and methods for approaching preservation and reuse of such properties in a manner that contributes to community health, safety and welfare while maintaining historical character and significance.Abandoned or underutilized industrial land and infrastructure often pose significant environmental, safety, and land-use liability issues for municipalities. The application of creative reuse ideas centered on the notion of preserving industrial character, while creating new housing and recreation options for citizens is a major opportunity for communities struggling to cope with the negative aspects of these properties. The design project portion of this study was performed as part of an `ideas competition' conducted in 2003 by the `Friends of The High Line,' a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving a 1.5 mile stretch of abandoned, elevated rail bed in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan Borough, New York City.

This thesis analyses tourism signage for pedestrians in urban areas. Signage must be regarded as a management tool not only for tourism itself but also for the general dynamics of urban mobility. The research has two starting points; the first one is the need to provide visitors and tourists with both basic welcome information and services signage, which benefits quality and enhances the tourism experience. The second one is the legal constraint that compels officially declared tourism municipalities to apply a specific tourism signage system. Apart from that, this research also highlights the need for clear criteria of homogenised signage relating to standardised design and content at local level while helping visitors avoid the feeling of being lost or disinformed. Thus, the signposting of tourist attractions and resources available in a territory has become of great importance to improve the image and competitiveness of the tourism destinations. In a context where technologies are emerging and developing at all levels, signage stands as the instrument that enables the achievement of two objectives from the tourism perspective. On the one hand, guide and inform visitors for an enhanced tourist experience, and on the other hand, manage and regulate the tourists’ flows and mobility within the urban environment. This research describes and analyses the formal features and the state of the tourism signage system in the municipalities where this signposting must be applied by law. To these municipalities, those ones with over 20.000 inhabitants have joined in their own interest. The research is based on bibliographic and documentary analysis, in-depth interviews to the stakeholders involved as well as fieldwork. The latter has consisted of data collection and direct observation of the signposting applied in the above mentioned municipalities from the years 2013 to 2017. This will provide knowledge about the evolution of tourism signage for pedestrians during the period analysed. From this point of view, it can be advanced that the signage in local destinations does not always meet the quality standards expected from such a competitive tourism destination as Catalonia.

This thesis deals, as its subtitle indicates, with tourism on the neighborhood level. In it, I provide a comparative account of the recent history of tourism development in Berlin-Kreuzberg and Harlem, New York. Grounded in a discussion of the forces reconfiguring urban development as well as tourism in the advanced capitalist world, it examines how, by whom, and with what effects the two neighborhoods are re-imagined, re-constructed, and re-experienced as places to visit and explore; unburies the frequently omitted historicity of "slumming" and other niche tourism practices impacting so-called marginalized neighborhoods; elaborates upon the potential of tourism for socially equitable forms of neighborhood development and explores how the old face of tourism is being challenged by the increasingly complex and diverse realities of contemporary travel and leisure. Understanding tourism as a complex, dynamic system rather than simply an industry or process, the thesis pays particular emphasis to the need to rethink the way the demand side of tourism in cities is conceived and made sense of. Whereas tourism consumption in urban research has traditionally been framed as an altogether distinct activity, my research posits that distinctions between tourism and other forms of migration on the one hand as well as tourism and other forms of leisure and place consumption on the other hand have become increasingly blurred. This, I argue, not only brings about significant changes with regard to cities' tourism and leisure landscapes. Rather, I also find evidence that the increasing pervasiveness of mobility and tourism as well as its increased dedifferentiation, i.e. the blurred boundaries between tourism and non-tourism activities, also transforms meanings of place and space and raises important questions concerning several critical concepts in urban studies such as the notions of 'citizenship', 'community', and 'belonging' in the 21st century.

Given the increase in tourism demand, this thesis examines how the City of Vancouver is currently planning for urban tourism for downtown Vancouver and identifies some alternative policy approaches adopted by other cities in the Northwest Region. A review of the urban tourism literature provides an overview of various ideas and conceptual frameworks related to urban tourism supply and demand with an emphasis on the relationship between visitor activity and urban planning. This review concludes with the identification of a set of issues that have planning implications for the built, natural, and cultural environments of the urban setting. Having determined that the City of Vancouver does not address tourism activity in the Central Area Plan, selected tourism activity and development issues specific to downtown Vancouver are highlighted to draw attention to the need for planners to plan for urban tourism. Urban tourism policy alternatives were derived from the planning documents and interviews with planners and destination managers from Seattle, Portland and San Francisco. The data was analysed and grouped according to the main urban tourism issues. An interesting progression is noted from minimal tourism land use planning in Seattle to moderate planning in Portland and finally, in San Francisco, thorough explicit and detailed land use planning which recognizes the impacts of tourism on the city. Suggestions for City of Vancouver planners and destination managers are advanced to address the potential adverse impacts of urban tourism. More study is required on how visitors behave in downtown Vancouver to better inform planning policy.

The City of Tshwane is currently facing many challenges in terms of economic development. It continues to underperform when compared to other local cities. As a capital city, it’s meant to be the heart of a thriving government system but this is seen as absent to many. In order to combat the above, a framework has been put into place by the City. It sets out spatial and sectoral strategies for interventions that will diversify, repopulate and regenerate the inner city. Within this framework, tourism has been identified as a component that could play a vital role towards achieving the above. The tourism sector within Tshwane has the potential to thrive and contribute substantially to the city’s economy. Reasons for this large gap between the tourist offer and the tourist demand may be as a result of a lack of marketing and good infrastructure around the various tourist attractions. All of the notable tourist attractions require a driving force behind them that spurs on a greater demand for such an outstanding offer. Apart from this, the city must be marketed as an urban tourist destination. Urban tourism, for many, may be seen as an intangible incident. This is due to its abstract nature - cities are not built specifically for the pleasure seeking tourist. Urban tourism does, however, exist as a component of the city’s functioning. It finds itself intertwined with the day to day activities of the city. Services and facilities available do not make a distinction between residents and tourists. Being a capital city, Tshwane’s identity is meant to be synonymous with government presence. However, many problems are faced in this regard such as government departments shunning itself away from the public behind high fences. By further establishing the city’s identity as a centre of government activity, visitor numbers to the city can increase. The presence of government must not remain inaccessible to the public. Rather, through architecture we can create a system of noticeable government whereby government officials, residents and tourists begin to share common platforms of interaction. Our buildings must stand as symbolic signs of a thriving and open government in a democratic society. They must become representations of the city’s contemporary identity - an identity that is composed of a multitude of cultures, races and social classes. Ultimately, the urban environment shaped through government presence must become a must-see destination for the urban tourist. With the above in mind, a catalyst can be formulated that seeks to drive a greater demand for tourism in the area. At the same time, a stronger and more noticeable government presence can be formulated. Eventually, the city’s goals of urban, economic and social regeneration can be achieved.

Taiwan has a very rich tourism resources and has also driven the development of the tourism industry. The Wazihwei Mangrove Conservation Area is located on the left side of the Danshui River near Bali, which is one of the natural resources and protection areas in New Taipei City. However, there have been few surveys of tourism resources and incorporate research related to tour planning in the past. Therefore, this study conducted a field survey, suitability analysis, and combined with tour planning to develop interesting travel. The results show that: (1) There are a large number of crabs, including Mictyris brevidactylus, Uca arcuata, Macrophthalmus banzai, Metaplax elegans and Ilyoplax formosensis. (2) The mangroves froest (species name: Kandelia candel (L.) Druce Rhizophora candel L.) have shown steady growth in all sites. The blooming stage is from April to August, and the young fruit period is between September and October. The fetal seedlings develop from November to March and mature in March. (3) Two satellite images were collected and interpreted. The first satellite imagery was taken on March 23, 2018, and the second was on October 29, 2018. The estimated area is 10.60 hectares and 10.61 hectares, seperately. The area are shown an increasing trend. (4) Through the suitability analysis, combined with the neighboring cultural resources and natural resources, and a half-day, one-day, two-day tour planning are developed. In this study, it is shown that has considerable natural resources, such as macrobenthos and mangrove ecology in Wazihwei Mangrove Conservation Area. This result can be used as a meaningful information for ecotourism and interpretation of navigation. In the future, it will provide a useful tourism information for recreation development and environmental education.

By relating the state rescaling processes to the issues of urban entrepreneurialism and urban spatial forms, this paper also looks at the urban-geographical changes that have taken place in the city centre during the late 1990s as well as its regional growth over the past two decades.
In the Chinese political-economic context, rescaling of state spaces is the crux of its 'urban' question. As the Guilin case reveals, while place-specific attributes are being mobilized towards local development, rescaled state institutions as well as a multi-scalar policy-making framework have largely determined its post-reform developmental trajectory.
Since the late 1970s when China adopted the reform and opening-up policy, tourism-based urban growth has stimulated a new type of politico-economic geography in some parts of the country. Based on the case study of a leading Chinese tourist city, namely Guilin, this paper examines how a series of state spatial processes have shaped its urban-regional development through to the new millennium.

The city of Durban, themed in the tourist industry as, "South Africa's Playground', has a vibrant and dense cultural mix. It is a sought after tourist destination both locally and on the global scene. The importance of the Tourist Industry is brought to bear in its use as a tool to stabilise the economy. The role of the CBD within the tourist industry is important as it is able to display culture. Since the CBD is a product of an ongoing evolutionary process it has embedded traces of cultural, social, political and economic fluctuations, which are expressed through the built form of the city. In this light, Durban's CBD is a vital asset as it offers a deepened understanding of culture through experience of place. This resource has not been developed to its full potential at present as is evident in the CBD's limited hours of use. Given the context of a society living within an "information age" this study aims to discover which factors contribute toward this phenomenon. Therefore, the research explores the physical conditions of the CBD as well as the social conditions that have been brought to bear through the introduction and evolution of technology and information access. Further, society's dependence on technology and information access and their relationship with the built environment will be explored. The importance of expressing this dynamic relationship within the built environment wtJI be explored. An appropriate means of architectural expression will be established as informed by the study and applied to the local context-of Durban's CBD.

A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Urban Studies, Johannesburg 2016
Like many cities around the world Johannesburg began marketing to attract tourists in the 1990s. Johannesburg has in the last couple of years become a ‘hot’ tourism destination and is increasingly ranked among the top global tourist destinations. Tourist cities market their cultural, historical shopping, entertainment and lifestyle attractions to attract tourists and wealthy residents. They also regenerate older historical districts or build new attractions in the form of high profile infrastructure and architecture. To attract tourists, cities use discourse to represent themselves in certain ways to the prospective tourist. This discourse found in tourism marketing and other communications; creates certain expectations or commonly held imaginings of a city as a tourism destination. These are referred to as tourism imaginaries. In cities these ‘tourism imaginaries’ become absorbed as urban imaginaries that shape not only tourist spaces, but the whole city. The research aims to deconstruct the imaginaries represented in Johannesburg’s tourism marketing to understand how tourism is shaping Johannesburg in line with this view. Discourse analysis is used as a method to achieve this. Michel Foucault understood discourse as a system of representation, where discourse is a way of creating meaning by representing knowledge and exercising power around a subject at a certain time in history and in a particular way. Besides the content analysis of the tourism marketing, the discourse analysis also captured how tourism businesses in three case study sites namely Newtown Precinct, Vilakazi Street and Montecasino Entertainment Complex have responded to the discourses in the City’s tourism marketing. A central argument made is that the drive to create tourist cities reinforces rather than reduces power inequalities and creates further fragmentation by creating pockets of exceptionalism reserved for tourists. The research contributes to the recent interest in the cultural and political understandings of cities which considers the often invisible or overlooked manifestations of power that shape cities. In the research tourism imaginaries are conceptualised as central in the generation and shaping of social practices in the City. It was concluded that the move to create tourist cities has given tourists and other tourism actors symbolic power, shaping the city by remote control, and therefore reinforcing global power dynamics that have shaped the world since colonial times.
