Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis study explores and demonstrates how Marina Can uses Irish folktale motifs in her plays to bring the audience to a state of mind where they viscerally, as opposed to intellectually, engage with Ireland's search for a cultural post-colonial identity. The analysis of Carr's works focuses on four of her post- Mai plays: The Mai, Portia Coughlan, By the Bog of Cats, and On Raftery's Hill. The focus is on the connection between these plays and Irish folklore, and explores Carr's use of folklore motifs within her plays. The analysis uses the folkloristic research approach, which classifies items or stories in the folktales by identifying distinguishing characteristics or specific items within a tale genre. The indices used in the analysis are Aarne-Thompson Index, Tom-Peete Cross's Motif-index of Early Irish Literature, and Sean O'Sullivan's Motif-Index of Irish Folklore. The plays were searched for motifs that correspond with those of the folktale motifs, and were then compared with these found in the indices. A second analysis showed that, within these four plays, Marina Carr mainly uses Irish folktales from before England's colonization. She modifies the folktales within her plays, specifically around the issue of agency for her female protagonists. The concluding chapter offers a Jungian explanation of Carr's use of these folktales as a means to engage the Irish national discussion of the development of a cultural identity.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe interest of machreq's authors for france from 1970 to 1987 is explained by the reconciliation policy with the arab world adopted since 1967. The study of twenty four novels reveals a globally favourable image of french people counterbalanced, however, by a negative image of a certain category of this people often referring to the france's ancient colonialism. The french nation's appreciable qualities are numerous and various. Those which are constantly praised are classified in 4 chapters each of them comprises many merits. The first chapter studies the political acquirements and the civic virtues which are the result of the french revolution. The second highights the sympathy joining the french and the arabs in friendly, loving and conjugal relationships often successful and indissoluble. The third chapter shows th advantages of franco-arab's cooperation in the cultural and medical fields. As for the 4 th chapter, it examines the merits of french people and specifies separately those of the french woman then those of the french man. Besides, the negative images caracterising a minority of french are also classified in four chapters each containing a series of defects. The first one describes the ancient colonialism of france in certain arab countries. The second one shows the defects and the colonialist agents' exactions particularly the militaries, the missionaries and the journalists. The 3 rd chapter studies the consequences of french imperialism displayed through the racism, the support to sionism and the exploitation of the poor. Finally, the fourth chapter examines the aspects of moral decline observed in a category of the french. Finally the fourth part explains the reasons and the consequences of the franco-arab's reconciliation during the last three decades and makes the sunthesis of the previous parts where it ressorts that the opportunities of cooperation and friendship between france and machreq are extremely important

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis is about the short story genre inspired by cruelty and darkness. We discuss the “cruel short story” main formal and thematic characteristics and show that this kind of fiction is especially suited for the writer to express the social, political, moral and even metaphysical anguishes of his time. We study several diverse short stories published by french, belgian, swiss and quebec french authors during the twentieth century last decades, a particularly rich moment for the “cruel short story” due to the Occident value crisis. We analysed in detail five representative short story-tellers' works of this cruelty movement that has been prominent in short fiction since 1965 : Marcel MARIËN, Jacques CHESSEX, Daniel WALTHER, Hubert HADDAD and Nadine MONFILS

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe representation of childhood is a major theme in Litterature. The atypical images of the child found in the Greek-Roman civilization and in Religious texts appear in forms that are profane and entertaining through storytelling, a uiversal litterary genre which has nurtured hunanity's children from the mists of time. My research aims at analysing the didactic function along with the aesthetic aspect of this litterary genre. Then, using a comparative method, analyse the various representations of the child in French and African tales. Tales are inseparable from the cultural context in which they are told, thus conveying messages through symbolic codes underlying the imagination of a particular social group. This socio-anthropological approach to storytelling is carried out concurrently with a litterary approach based on stylistics and theories common to tales. My aim is to analyse the poetry in tales with a view to revealing the charm of these ageless narratives

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAlthough our study does not reject a narrative perspective on the event, it claims that a literary approach to the event should not be limited to that angle. The concept of event is therefore considered in the extended field of human sciences (historiography, analytical philosophy, phenomenology, etc. ) in order to gather tools to better capture its specificities in literary texts. The questions regarding the writing of events –historical or natural– are asked in both poetic and narrative texts : what is considered to be an event for a novelist (Simon, Rouaud, Savitzkaya) or a poet (Follain, Réda, Jacqmin) ? What are the linguistic means our authors resort to in order to write those events ? How can literary works reflect the author's vision of the world and how can they be ethically interpreted ? Our ultimate goal is indeed to give an ethical interpretation to our authors' works, a " poethics " (Pinson)

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleTuscany keeps a group of four pulpits, sculpted between 1260-1310 by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, which are known as the greatest Italian gothic sculpture masterpieces. Those monuments have been dismembered and the subsequent restaurations have lost part of the original meaning, as the order of the figures has been forgotten. The present study tries to look for the logic that ties all figures within a coherent and unificated signification. It begins with a recall of the liturgical principles on which the pulpit is built, as the monuments exist as an active part of the christian ritual before they're considered as works of art. The analysis of the production of pulpits on a larger geographical and historical scale is also useful to observe with a better accuracy the originality of the Pisani's work. .

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis aims at discovering the different narrative and structural functions and the semantic investment of metamorphosis in one hundred one European and African fairy tales. Through a semiotic analysis, our approach lies on the hypothesis according which the tale is resonating with different levels. In the same way as numerous tale motifs, the metamorphosis forms a metapsychological configuration linked to anthropological preoccupations. Moreover, it illustrates reminiscences of ethnological practices linked to passage rites, initiation rites, and funeral cults. It also recalls totemic beliefs. Besides these ethnological considerations, it lies on rhetorical and linguistic processes which contribute to enhance positively or negatively the metamorphosed subject according to other subjects. It permits to incarnate fear as well as fascination men or women or any changing person may suggest to others. This study is composed of three parts. In the first chapter, we define our approach of the fairy tales and our methodology. The second chapter consists in a presentation of the nine groups of tales in which the metamorphosis appears. We expound the thematic and narrative composition, the representational content, the mythological inspiration of the tales which are concerned so as to make appear the semantic and structural role metamorphosis acts at last, in the third chapter, we present the different types of metamorphosis, its different semantic and narrative functions as well as the reinvestment of ethnological material and the rhetorical processes linked to anthropological preoccupations

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDegeneration may be defined as a set of discourses that warn the middle-class against racial decline, hereditary evils and asocial beings. Although psychiatry, criminology, anthropology and the theories of evolution participated in its elaboration, this notion is mainly ideological. In literature, it consists in transformational heredity : atavistic degenerates undergo constant changes as they live through their personal, family and biological histories again. Their demoralized bodies are both strange and familiar, monstrous and decipherable. But degeneration is a symptom of social unease rather than a sign of objective danger. Some novelists deliver a regenerative message, others tend to blur the degenerate and the moral crusader, moral insanity and the craze for moral purity, morbidity and power. By creating characters which are so unfit and so unworthy that they do not deserve to live, some writers manage to turn degeneration into a creative act

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleFor decades, chauvinist behaviour has transformed women into objects. However writers of the Fantastic or the Imaginery define them as complex beings worthy of interest. Homodiegetic narrator or protagonist, they constitute the founding element of these stories. By describing as unstable beings or prey to deep depression these authors draw attention to the dual nature and the fragmentation of their personnality in the face of masculine domination. Feminine characters take refuge in an interior universe, made up of memories and daydreams. Their vision of the surrounding world finds itself thus changed by the superposition of this private imaginary universe or the outside world. The confusion between dream and reality becomes stronger when women look themselves behind-closed doors where achiaroscuro favours at one and the same time introspection and the emergence of fantasising. The fantastic element develops all the more easily these characters try to recreate the play world of their childhood within their inner space. This space coreelated with the disturbing strangeness has similarities with the world of fairy stories where the animal and the object have humain characteristics. In this way mysterious, women arouse a fascination or a veritable fanaticism in their family circle where everyone wants to have absolute knowledge of the feminine character. The feminine chararcter paradoxically express limitless attraction for religious practise and for the parapsyche. Through their behaviour, at times extreme, women acquise within the cuple a superiority over men and sometimes absolute supremacy. Their imago commes remarkably closer to and identifies with that of the Devil. This mythic incarnation refers to the desire for the mystification of Woman (Cuentos de Amor/ de Locura y de Muerte, Quiroga, El Sur/ Bene, Garcia Morales, Cornelia Frente al Espejo/ Y Asi Sucesivamente, Ocampo, Queremos Tanto a Glenda, Cortazar, Le Testamment Français, Makine)

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe patriotic plays, with appeared with the War of Independence opening the 19th century in Spain, were very popular during the Africain War (1859-1860) and continued to develop thanks to forty years of uninterrupted conflicts leading to the "Disaster" of 1898 and the lost of the last Spanish colonies. Their writers come from the Bourgeoisie and present the ideal society of which they dream and in which the good people goes to get killed without rebelling, thus allowing the Bourgeois to pay not to send their own children. Becoming sometimes a tool of propaganda, these plays use the preexisting theatrical bases and perfectly fit in the production of this period ; by using the usual theatrical resorts, they make their message particularly efficient. .

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleModern perceptions of time are divested of their traditional attributes : sacredness and transcendance. Previous responses of mythical works of art to the anxiety of the end and to the fantasm of victory over entropy and death are rejected : circular time, immortality, eternity. But these outgrown phenomenologies are "subjacent" to modern fantastic genre, especially to Gautier, Kafka, Ray, Lovecraft, Tolkien and Borges. Except for Tolkien, these sacred corpses are means and not ends through which to initiate a common aesthetic priority and tradition : the value of our pleasure in imagining existence rewritten differently. Thus, they all organise a process of time renewal and, through this, a resistance of the imagination to the thought of their time, originating from the fascination for rationality, materiality and linearity ; all this by rewriting myths and their mataphysical outcomes

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleMy approach in this study is twofold, its basis is a detailed, and in the case of fifteen plays, even an exhaustive reading of the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Racine and Grillparzer, for references to the sea, to fire, to light and shadow, to animals, to all those elementrs which conventionally constitute nature. On this foundation, I examine the relationship between nature and the tragic, my postulate being that such references, far from being pure ornament, have a thematic and structural function. Revealing. Analysis shows that for writers of tragedy, nature polarises between the grandiose, the mysterious, the threastening on the one hand, and on the other the wead, the poignant and the threatened: the elements at their most tempestuous, the most immeasurable, animals hunted and hunters, in short violence and victim. Predator and prey. Revealingly too, references to nature in tragedy are not formally equivalent to those in epic. The homeric simile of the epic, presupposing a distinction between tenor and vehicle, betwwen nature and man, gives way to metaphor which does not interrupt the urgency of the action, and which is the stylistic transposition of the inextricable bonds between man and nature

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleTwentieth century Latin American promethean literature is the product of the melange of archetypal, cultural and historical “voices”, amongst these voices figures Anglo-Saxon and Germanic promethean literature. This thesis identifies six modern Latin American promethean works, analyzes them from a Jungian perspective, establishes and discusses their parallels with earlier Anglo-Saxon and Germanic promethean works and, finally, presents a classification for promethean characters from modern Latin American literature. The first part of this thesis discusses, from a Jungian point of view, the archetypes of the mature masculine and their role in the process of individuation which the promethean myth chronicles. The second part presents the development of promethean literature from ancient Greece and Rome up to seven Anglo-Saxon and Germanic works : Faust, 1st part (1808) and 2nd part (1832) by Johann von Goethe, Frankenstein (1816) by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Prometheus unbound (1820) by Percy Bysshe Shelley, the short story “the birthmark” (1843) by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) by Robert Louis Stevenson, The portrait of Dorian Gray (1891) by Oscar Wilde, and The island of dr. Moreau (1896) by Herbert George Wells. The third part analyzes six fictional works by six modern Latin American authors: Prometeo (1943) by the Ecuadorian Humberto Salvador, La invención de Morel (1940) by the argentine Adolfo Bioy Casares, El señor presidente (1946) by the Guatemalan Miguel Angel Asturias, Los pasos perdidos (1953) by the Cuban Alejo Carpentier, Cien años de soledad by the Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the short story “las ruinas circulares” from Ficciones (1941) by the argentine Jorge Luis Borges

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleLandscapes are part of a common discourse. At the crossroad of technology, environmental debates and artistic photography, they figure in countless novels, trigering stereotypes : natural, pleasant spaces conveying a stable order that the eye absorbs, appraises and controls. Yet this univocal discourse forgets that the very idea of landscape is a recent cultural construct in Europe, a pictorial invention of the late 15th century turning the land into a landscape. Going against the grain, the "New Novel" questions -in an exemplary fashion- the premises underpinning it. Disrupting traditional systems of representation, clichés and flourishes, it deconstructs the concept of landscape that anchors the perception of reality an d presupposes a dubious relationship between the world and an all-knowing, all-powerful subject. Conversely, it constructs another vision, destabilized, but keen, an perhaps new models by exploring a reality altogether familiar and uncanny

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe treatment of space in argentine fantastic literature, from the forties to the sixties, and particularly its abstract quality, are to be related to a problematic relationship with space, traditional in Argentina. The first part provides a synthetically approach of this relationship, and of its evolution up to the nineteen-thirties, when it is expressed in a series of critical essays. The second part is dedicated to Borges, his critical approach of the representation of space, and his promotion of abstract spaces in his short stories of the forties. The last part deals with the figures of space in the early works of his followers, Bioy Casares and Cortazar, from utopia closed spaces to a surrounded, insecure space, reflecting both traditional fears and modern anxieties, connected, for instance, with the context of peronism

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis study of Eighteenth-Century fiction and medicine (1719-1771) aims at presenting an interdisciplinary analysis of both discourses. Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollett and Laurence Sterne use some elements of the medical discourse to justify their literary enterprise. They tend to argue that fiction can prevent the reader against vice, or even cure him. To study how medical and fictional discourse interact with each other, this analysis follows the tree steps of the medical process—description, prescription and treatment. The description of life—so essential to the medical thought—is becoming the vital concern of realistic fiction, which assimilates some medical principles such as circulation. Many prescriptive strategies are enacted by authors of fiction and medical doctors who write about domestic life, suggesting some proper ways of dealing with one's body. Finally, both fiction and medicine offer to cure through movement, by exercising and purging, thinking and laughing. Corrosive satirical laughs are assimilated to a certain healing violence often associated with the medical treatment

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWho am I? Where from do I come? How I represent my world? Is it as it is, as I see myself or like I look at the others? In these questions which motivated this research work, the general answer is that any representation is made in a identical way: my glance thrown on the world is what I am and what I am not, the same and the various. This thesis of literature and compared civilizations shows as well as a Francophone fiction is the filtering, from the adventures of its author, anthropo-historic data of the world which is of use to him as decoration. The ascent at the source of the History of the Saharan peoples and the local imaginations reveal that these sociocultural universes have a common substratum that the events (climatic, political, etc. ) split up. So the identical representations draw from the unique as from the multiple to produce a speech which makes body with the other bodies. The analysis of some works of Ahmadou Kourouma, Tahar Ben Jelloun and of Abdourahman A. Waberi demonstrates that the contemporary fiction can lend itself to an anthropological or anthropoetic reading which stipulates that a representation is a sample of World-Imaginary as the member of a body is inseparable of the body. The current literary theories included that the literature is a part of cultural and social studies which are themselves a constituent of the anthropology defined as "all the human sciences". In other words, to read in a criticize way a fiction and it is to invest the field of the transdisciplinarity
