Annotation:
It is traditionally considered that Xenophon intentionally suppresses the image of the Theban commanders in his work “Hellenika”, where even Epaminondas - the winner of The Battle of Leuctra – is not mentioned by name. The suppression of the commanders is often explained by his disaffection towards the Thebans, because of his participance in The Battle of Coronea supporting Sparta against the Thebans. Furthermore, he lost his son Gryllus fighting the Thebans at Mantinea. At our point of view, this negative judgement of Xenophon’s view on Thebes and the Thebans is explained first of all by Athens’ traditional education, which created a negative literary tradition towards Thebes. The literary tradition was established long before Xenophon’s existence and continued after him. The tradition was established as response to the border conflicts between the Thebans and the Athenians, that continued during archaic and classical periods of the history of Greece. The anti-Theban literary tradition is also supported by evidence of material culture, namely the border system of defense. Studying these materials, allows us to conclude that at the time of Xenophon, in the first half of the 4th century BC, at a time when their oppositions escalated against each other, the Athenians and the Thebans literally observed each other over the fortress walls. With regard to Xenophon, his hatred against the Thebans is mostly visible in his work “Hellenika”. The main argument that Xenophon uses is retelling of Pelopidas’ speech that he gives at the court of the Persian king, where the first thing he mentions is the Thebans’ pro-Persian attitude. Epaminondas is mentioned in the “Hellenika” only in episodes of his career as a commander where he cannot achieve his goals or develop past success.

Papaver somniferum commonly known as Khashkhash /Afyon, belongs to family Papaveraceae. It is one of those traditional plants, which have a long history of usage as medicine. The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) produces some of the most widely used medicinal alkaloids like morphine, codeine, thebain and porphyroxine which are the most important component of this plant. Apart from these alkaloids, opium poppy produces approximately eighty alkaloids belonging to various tetrahydrobenzylisoquinolinederived classes. It has been known for over a century that morphinan alkaloids accumulate in the latex of opium poppy. According to Unani literature, it possesses most important theurapeutic values as modern literature and research studies also prove its therapeutical importance. It is used as analgesic, narcotic, sedative, stimulant as well as nutritive, etc. It is also useful in headache, cough, insomnia, cardiac asthma, and biliary colic. In this paper we have provide a review on habitate, pharmacological actions, phytochemical with special refrence to Unani Medicine. In this review, an attempt is made to explore the complete information of Papaver somniferum including its phytochemistry and pharmacology. Key words: Khashkhash, Biliary colic, Alkaloid, phytochemistry.

This article argues, in a series of discrete but interconnected notes, that Statius engages consistently and consciously with mythographical works—prose collections and exegesis on myth as myth—in the creation of his two major catalogs in theThebaid, the catalog of Argive allies at 4.1-344 and that of Theban allies at 7.243-373. Both are patently based on Homer’s ‘Catalog of Ships’, but Statius reshapes his model by engaging ingeniously with mythographical and geographical works in prose to invent a unique pre-Iliadiclandscape. This paper also explores some of the literary ways in which Statius reinvents Homer’s catalog, including offering his readers mythological puzzles that require knowledge both of Homer’s text and subsequent scholarship thereon.

The current research is mainly a preliminary study of some of the most significant graffiti located in the wadi C2, in the context of the ongoing investigation of the C2 Project. The Royal Cache Wadi Survey, and tries to clear out the motivations behind the location and concentration of graffiti in the area, probably related to the sacred character of the place. Through the analysis of C2 graffiti published in the work Graffiti de la Montaigne Thebaine, which are being revised in depth, the types of figurative graffiti are established, as well as those figures connected to specific textual graffiti, maybe later additions. The study of the figurative graffiti follows a comparative approach considering them in connection to the landscape and to contemporary and older graffiti in the wadi, and relating them with the presence of graffiti in Theban tombs, which have been analysed by Alexis Den Doncker and Chloé C.D. Ragazzoli. The analysis of an interesting graffito with a hunt in the desert scene (graffito 3652) will be a case-study to understand the reception of the funerary art of the New Kingdom and its transference into the rocky wall of the Theban mountains. In all, we will try to explain the presence of a significant corpus of graffito recorded in the wadi C2, within an inhospitable environment but that maybe had a sacred character linked to a religious cult. The existence of this type of human activity, graffiti, could be understood as an example of ‘space appropriation’, an intention to leave a mark on the site by creating a text or just making a drawing.

Annotation:
The article examines the didactical component of Pindar’s Pythian 8, which includes the Theban mythohistorical line — the plot of “Seven against Thebes” and the Epigoni’s march on Thebes. In this ode, Pindar instructs Aeginet Aristomenes, the winner of the Pythian Games, through Amphiaraus’ prophecy. Glorifying Aristomenes, Pindar instructs him not to become proud beyond measure, not to overstep the bounds, because Hes-ychia can destroy anyone who lets “merciless malice” into his heart, as it happened with Adrastus and his son. At the same time, Pindar compares Aristomenes with the hero Alcmaeon, the son of Amphiaraus, emphasizing that the glorious blood of their fathers flows in the veins of both. This interpretation of the fragment from Pind. Pyth. 8.56-60 differs from the traditional one since here Pindar meets not Alcmaeon, but Amphiaraus, receiving a prophecy from the latter. It is Amphiaraus who is called Pindar’s "neighbor" and the “guardian” of the Thebans’ possessions. In our opinion, Amphiaraus appears to Pindar in Delphi or on the way to Delphi. This interpretation is based on a comparison of Pindar’s text with a fragment from Herodotus (Hdt. 8.134.1-2), as well as on paleotopographic, archaeological and epigraphic studies. Considering that there is no information about the cult of Alcmaeon in Thebes and in Aegina at the moment, it seems like-ly that Pindar implies his meeting with Amphiaraus, whose sanc-tuary was located, according to a number of scholars, including the author of the article, near Thebes. However, according to He-rodotus who stated that the Thebans could not inquire the oracle of Amphiaraus in this sanctuary, and also on the basis of the pos-sible location of this sanctuary off the road to Delphi, it is sug-gested that Amphiaraus appeared to Pindar not at Amphiareum.

Thebaine is naturally occurring alkaloid which is of great importance in the pharmaceutical industry and up to now there is not a Pharmacopoeial monograph for this compound. There is a definite need for development of simple procedures for routine quality assessment based on physical and spectroscopic properties (melting point, UV-Vis, IR, specific optical rotation) and even more importantly a need for development of chromatographic methods for determination of purity. The main objective of this work was to develop RP-HPLC-UVD method for quantification of thebaine and also to develop complementary GC-MS method for qualitative analysis. The developed HPLC method utilized RP-C18 monolithic column, gradient elution with trifluoroacetic acid and formic acid in water and in acetonitrile and detection at 285nm. The effects of the relevant chromatographic conditions was investigated and the optimized and validated method was usеd for analysis of three batches of thebaine.

A procedure that contained different methods for determination and identification of thebaine, was performed with main focus on the HPLC method suitable for quantitative and qualitative determination. In parallel, to complete the purity profile, the three batches of thebaine were analyzed by IR, UV-Vis spectroscopy and specific optical rotation and melting point determination. The analysis of thebaine can be performed in few steps by simple and reproducible methods like IR spectroscopy, specific optical rotation, melting point and the developed HPLC method, later proved by its validation. The developed HPLC-UV method is suitable for transfer to HPLC-MS method. The GC-MS method is quite suited for identification of thebaine and of the impurities, but is limited to free bases. As part of a research programme to establish an analytical method for the simultaneous detection of the five major opium alkaloids in poppy seeds by liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS) it was discovered that the inclusion of thebaine produced two peaks for the same compound. This was in contrast to the effective simultaneous detection, by LC-ESI-MS, of morphine, codeine, papaverine and noscapine. The presence of these two peaks for thebaine was investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with deuterated solvents to emulate the mobile phase conditions experienced. It was found that the presence of 80%, or higher ratios of, water caused two epimeric forms of thebaine to be formed; this explained the presence of two peaks on the chromatogram. In contrast, when a lower water content was used with 1% acetic acid, one stable form of thebaine could be analysed and resulted in a single peak visible in the subsequent chromatography.

This paper focuses on the emergence of the Theban kingdom of Dynasty 16 in the Second Intermediate Period and explores the historical repercussions of its assumed struggle with the declining state of Dynasty 13 centered at Itjtawy. A revision of the recent evidence from Edfu raises doubts about the alleged contemporaneity of Sobekhotep iv and Khayan. A survey of administrative titles in the sources pertaining to the Theban kingdom testifies that it arose independently based on the local power structures of the Late Middle Kingdom rather than because of a relocation from the north. The separation of the nascent Theban kingdom from the state of Dynasty 13 and a surmised consequent confrontation between these entities had an impact on the ideology of the new polity and influenced the policy of its direct successor—the state of Dynasty 17 and the early New Kingdom. The original lack of legitimacy of Dynasty 16 could have been one of the reasons for overstating the power of the Hyksos in historical texts—in order to justify Theban claims to rule in Middle and Lower Egypt.

The aim of our work is the Theban cadastre, which is the most important source from which the development of the feudalization of Byzantine agriculture can be traced. The text of the cadastre was written in the second half of the 11th century. Based on the text of this source, the authors tried to point out and explain the changes that took place in property relations in Byzantine agriculture. In the analysis given in the paper, it can be noticed that the Theban cadastre is a source from which it can be directly seen in what way the consolidation of estates took place, i.e. the creation from large feudal agricultural estates. The Theban cadastre gives specific cases that directly follow individual agricultural producers with their names, as well as the names of dinats (powerful people) who bought their property. This is exactly the significance of the Theban cadastre, because on the basis of the records contained in it, changes in ownership can be traced. From this time distance, we can freely say that these changes directly influenced the further development of Byzantine agriculture.

Annotation:
Morphine alkaloids and some of its derivatives (morphine, codeine, thebaine, oripavine, hydrocodone, and oxycodone) were subjected to fermentations with six fungal strains. The alkaloids were transformed to a variety of products via biological oxidations, reductions, and oxidative demethylations. The strain Cunninghamella echinulata proved to be the most effective for demethylations of all of the above compounds, except for morphine. The time profile of the conversion of 3-[14CH3]thebaine to 3-[14CH3]northebaine by C. echinulata cultures was also determined.

Annotation:
Hippomedon is stoutly defending the body of his fallen comrade Tydeus against a mass of Thebans who press him hard: there is a break in the attack allowing him to return fire while his allies Alcon and Idas with their troops come to his aid. It is grammatically possible that iaculantum could be taken with tela, but style and word order make this most unlikely.

Annotation:
Statius is the arch-describer. Even when it was universally agreed that his poetry was essentially second-rate hack-work, his ability to evoke the visual and his relationship to works of art provided fascination and interest. Yet the ekphraseis in the Thebaid have not received much detailed critical attention. This paper looks at the double ekphrasis of the prizes at the end of the chariot race in Thebaid 6. If ekphraseis tend to be ignored and passed over, if ekphraseis are moments outside narrative, still visions for the viewer in the text, interludes, as it were, then an ekphrasis within a set of games is doubly distant from the thrust of the text. For games themselves have suffered the same marginalisation: read as purely ‘decorative’ or ‘imitative’ their importance for understanding the wider realities of the text has often passed unnoticed. An ekphrasis, then, is indeed a sort of game, and, I would argue, this is particularly so in this case. For Statius uses this passage to make a new move in his poetic contests with his predecessors. He takes one Homeric object and one Virgilian object, decorates them with Ovid and sets them against each other. Hinds has read the Achilleid as an Ovidian epic but Ovid is also extremely important in the Thebaid and much more work is needed on this.
