Purpose This paper aims to provide an overview of the need and current development of document viewers for digitized objects in DSpace repositories, including a local viewer developed for a document collection as like research papers, thesis and dissertation. Design/methodology/approach The authors developed the concept for the to preserve and store all types of document in one data base with the help of open source software (OSS). The authors used Java Script programing to integrated and developed the system. Findings The major finding of our work is that large document file can be accommodated in DSpace without modifying the originality of the documents and viewing the document in a different dimension as a specialist needs. The combination of current technologies such as Google Doc Viewer and the Internet Archive Book Reader, as well as the growing number of digital repositories hosting digitized content, suggests that the DSpace community will probably benefit with an “out-of-the-box.” Originality/value In addition, to exploring the opportunities of OSS implementation in different research institutes, the study includes issues related to the implementation of the open source repository. This is the first time in India, as well as DSpace history to created and developed Document Viewer with the help of DSpace OSS. The study would have value for library professionals and the developer to understand the market in the context of OSS.

Purpose Research on academic writing development at graduate level has received wide attention. However, less has been documented on positive academic writing literacy experiences and strategies of non-native students while completing their master’s theses. The purpose of this paper is to examine facilitating strategies that non-native students develop in the writing-up stage. Design/methodology/approach A total of 50 MA English majors from 11 higher education institutions in Tehran participated in this qualitative study. Data were gathered using interviews and journal entries and analyzed thematically with the help of the NVivo10 software. Findings The analysis resulted in three major themes: self-support strategies of an academic writer; enhancing personal development; and supervisors’ support and feedback. Findings showed that Iranian students developed strategies that involved interactions not only with supervisors but also members of various academic communities that could be reached via online professional networking. There was also a need to address organizational skills and mood management to meet deadlines. Regardless of the self-support strategies, the supervisors’ role and supervisor–supervisee relationships remained crucial. Originality/value Available studies in academic literacy and English for academic purposes have mainly focused on thesis challenges. This study highlights strategies and positive experiences that facilitate the progress of MA students in the thesis writing journey, while at the same time emphasizing the critical role of supervisors in expediting this process.

The development of close-range photogrammetry has produced a lot of new possibility to study cultural heritage. 3D data acquired with conventional and low cost cameras can be used to document, investigate the full appearance, materials and conservation status, to help the restoration process and identify intervention priorities. At the same time, with 3D survey a lot of three-dimensional data are collected and analyzed by researchers, but there are a very few possibility of 3D output. The augmented reality is one of this possible output with a very low cost technology but a very interesting result. Using simple mobile technology (for iPad and Android Tablets) and shareware software (in the case presented “Augment”) it is possible to share and visualize a large number of 3D models with your own device. The case study presented is a part of an architecture graduate thesis, made in Rome at Department of Architecture of Roma Tre University. We have developed a photogrammetric survey to study the Aurelian Wall at Castra Praetoria in Rome. The surveys of 8000 square meters of surface have allowed to identify stratigraphy and construction phases of a complex portion of Aurelian Wall, specially about the Northern door of Castra. During this study, the data coming out of 3D survey (photogrammetric and topographic), are stored and used to create a reverse 3D model, or virtual reconstruction, of the Northern door of Castra. This virtual reconstruction shows the door in the Tiberian period, nowadays it's totally hidden by a curtain wall but, little and significative architectural details allow to know its original feature. The 3D model of the ancient walls has been mapped with the exact type of bricks and mortar, oriented and scaled according to the existing one to use augmented reality. Finally, two kind of application have been developed, one on site, were you can see superimposed the virtual reconstruction on the existing walls using the image recognition. On the other hand, to show the results also during the graduation day, the same application has been created in off-site condition using a poster.

Background and Purpose: This article analyses the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) political scandal as a case study to examine how an issue is discursively shaped online by netizens’ perceptions of the scandal. The study has two objectives: firstly, to explore netizens’ perceptions of 1MDB and how they reacted to the news reported based on the online exposés appearing throughout 2015. Secondly, it aims to examine whether the discourse regarding 1MDB among netizens on an online platform, The Malaysian Insider Facebook page, meets the characteristics of a practical discourse in an online context, as proposed by Jurgen Habermas. Methodology: A total of 1950 Facebook comments related to 210 1MDB articles in 2015 were analysed. The articles were linked and published by The Malaysia Insider Facebook page. The analysis was conducted using thematic analysis via NVivo software to explore the perceptions of the selected netizens about 1MDB and how the online discourse on 1MDB matched the characteristics proposed by Jurgen Habermas for practical online discourse. Findings: Four themes emerged, namely Najib as the Prime Minister, the 1MDB Debate Controversy, the Opposition position on 1MDB and the investigation of the 1MDB scandal. Based on the online discourse, it was evident that consumption of 1MDB news on Facebook led Malaysian netizens to form their own perceptions of the scandal. The emergent themes also illustrate that the online discourse met the characteristics of practical discourse suggested by Jurgen Habermas. Contributions: This empirical contribution fills a gap in the current knowledge as few studies have been conducted on the online discourse of the 1MDB political scandal among Malaysian netizens. Currently, no research is documented on the 1MDB political scandal from the netizens’ perspective other than the first author’s PhD thesis. This research is, therefore, beneficial to new media studies as researchers normally investigate or explore a specific issue when it has a conclusion; here, a risk was taken to conduct the study while 1MDB was still under investigation. The purpose of this master thesis is to improve the quality of software testing in a large company developing real-time embedded systems. Software testing is a very important part of software development. By performing comprehensive software testing the quality and validity of a software system can be assured. One of the main issues with software testing is to be sure that the tests are correct. Knowing what to test, but also how to perform testing, is of utmost importance.

In this thesis, we explore different ways to increase the quality of real-time testing by introducing new techniques in several stages of the software development model. Four complementary methods are suggested. The proposed methods are validated by implementing them in an existing and completed project on a subset of the software development process. The original output from the completed project is compared with the new output.

The presented results from the validation are positive in the sense that it is shown that the test stage was more qualitative, mostly due to a higher level of quality on input from earlier stages.

AbstractComputing relies on architecture specifications to decouple hardware and software development. Historically these have been prose documents, with all the problems that entails, but research over the last ten years has developed rigorous and executable-as-test-oracle specifications of mainstream architecture instruction sets and “user-mode” concurrency, clarifying architectures and bringing them into the scope of programming-language semantics and verification. However, the system semantics, of instruction-fetch and cache maintenance, exceptions and interrupts, and address translation, remains obscure, leaving us without a solid foundation for verification of security-critical systems software. In this paper we establish a robust model for one aspect of system semantics: instruction fetch and cache maintenance for ARMv8-A. Systems code relies on executing instructions that were written by data writes, e.g. in program loading, dynamic linking, JIT compilation, debugging, and OS configuration, but hardware implementations are often highly optimised, e.g. with instruction caches, linefill buffers, out-of-order fetching, branch prediction, and instruction prefetching, which can affect programmer-observable behaviour. It is essential, both for programming and verification, to abstract from such microarchitectural details as much as possible, but no more. We explore the key architecture design questions with a series of examples, discussed in detail with senior Arm staff; capture the architectural intent in operational and axiomatic semantic models, extending previous work on “user-mode” concurrency; make these models executable as test oracles for small examples; and experimentally validate them against hardware behaviour (finding a bug in one hardware device). We thereby bring these subtle issues into the mathematical domain, clarifying the architecture and enabling future work on system software verification.

Abstract In this document, we describe the experience of teaching Agile Methods for developing projects related to the Linux Kernel, during the XP Lab course. In 2018, the first project related to this context emerged. This project had the objective of making adjustments to the driver for Linux IIO subsystem. The second project was developed in 2019 and aimed to refactor the Ethernet driver used in the kernel of a Brazilian Single Board Computer. Based on 19 years of experience offering the XP Lab course, we consider the development of these projects to be a challenging teaching activity, which deserves to be presented and discussed with students, educators, and professionals. Our aim is to show that it is possible to adapt Agile Values to different software development settings.

AbstractInter-team coordination in large-scale software development can be challenging when relying on agile development methods that emphasize iterative and frequent delivery in autonomous teams. Previous research has introduced the concept of coordination strategies, which refer to a set of coordination mechanisms to manage dependencies. We report on a case study in a large-scale agile development program with 16 development teams. Through interviews, meeting observations, and supplemental document analyses, we explore the challenges to inter-team coordination and how dependencies are managed. We found four coordination strategies: 1) aligning autonomous teams, 2) maintaining overview in the large-scale setting, 3) managing prioritizations, and 4) managing architecture and technical dependencies. This study extends previous research on coordination strategies within teams to the inter-team level. We propose that large-scale organizations can use coordination strategies to understand how they coordinate across teams and manage their unique coordination situation.

Industry recognizes that Very Small Entities (VSEs) that develop software are very important to the economy. A Very Small Entity (VSE) is an entity (enterprise, organization, department or project) with up to 25 people..Failure to deliver a quality product on time and within budget threatens the competitiveness of VSEs and impacts their customers. One way to mitigate these risks is to put in place proven software engineering practices. Many international standards and models, like ISO/IEC 12207 or CMMI®1, have been developed to capture proven engineering practices. However, these documents were not designed for VSEs and are often difficult to apply in such settings. This chapter presents a description of the development of process improvement international standards (IS) targeting VSEs developing or maintaining software as a standalone product or software as a component of a system. The documents used by ISO/IEC JTC1/SC72 Working Group 24 (WG24), mandated to develop a set of standards and guides, and the approach that led to the development, balloting of the ISs, and TRs (Technical Reports) for VSEs are also presented. The chapter focuses on the ISO/IEC 29110 Standard3, the development of means to help VSEs improve their processes, and the description of a few pilot projects conducted to implement the processes of ISO/IEC 29110 standard.

Access control to multi level security documents is very important and challenging issue. Millions of organizations around the globe intend to apply security levels over their confidential documents to protect from unauthorized use. Some numbered access control approaches have been proposed and an optimal solution is the need of the time. This chapter presents an overview of a robust software engineering approach for access control to multi-level security documents. The access control system incorporates stages including data refinement, text comprehension, and understanding of multi-stage protection and application levels. It will scan the document, tag the sections of certain text, understand the meaning of various levels, group-up the text using bottom-up approach, and then classify the levels as per protection norms (set as organization wise) defined. This approach will be very helpful for multi-level protection of precious information. Only authorized users would be able to access the information relevant to them as defined by the authorities.

In this chapter, the authors discuss two important trends in modern software engineering (SE) regarding the utilization of knowledge management (KM) and information retrieval (IR). Software engineering is a discipline in which knowledge and experience, acquired in the course of many years, play a fundamental role. For software development organizations, the main assets are not manufacturing plants, buildings, and machines, but the knowledge held by their employees. Software engineering has long recognized the need for managing knowledge and that the SE community could learn much from the KM community. The authors introduce the fundamental concepts of KM theory and practice and mainly discuss the aspects of knowledge management that are valuable to software development organizations and how a KM system for such an organization can be implemented. In addition to knowledge management, information retrieval (IR) also plays a crucial role in SE. IR is a study of how to efficiently and effectively retrieve a required piece of information from a large corpus of storage entities such as documents. As software development organizations grow larger and have to deal with larger numbers (probably millions) of documents of various types, IR becomes an essential tool for retrieving any piece of information that a software developer wants within a short time. IR can be used both as a general-purpose tool to improve the productivity of developers or as an enabler tool to facilitate a KM system.

For lifelogging, or the recording of one’s life history through digital means, to be successful, a range of separate multimodal mobile devices must be employed. These include smartphones such as the N95, the Microsoft SenseCam – a wearable passive photo capture device, or wearable biometric devices. Each collects a facet of the bigger picture, through, for example, personal digital photos, mobile messages and documents access history, but unfortunately, they operate independently and unaware of each other. This creates significant challenges for the practical application of these devices, the use and integration of their data and their operation by a user. In this chapter, authors discuss the software engineering challenges and their implications for individuals working on integration of data from multiple ubiquitous mobile devices drawing on experiences working with such technology over the past several years for the development of integrated personal lifelogs. The chapter serves as an engineering guide to those considering working in the domain of lifelogging and more generally to those working with multiple multimodal devices and integration of their data.

In order to ensure the correctness of the DCS design documents, in the HPR1000 nuclear power plant (referred to as NPP) DCS engineering design phase, the documents need to be verified and validated. Based on this, taking the HPR1000 NPP as a reference unit, the design verification platform which named Full Scope Engineering Simulator (referred to as FES) is designed and developed. The FES project packages are constituted by process system modeling simulation software, DCS control logics simulation software (referred to as Level1), human-machine interface simulation software (referred to as Level2 or HMI), operating panel simulation software, I/O interface simulation software, some computer equipments other hardware, and so on. The FES can be used to validate the HPR1000 NPP DCS control logic diagrams, human-machine interface, and procedures guidelines, and so on. When the design institute submits the DCS design documents (include Level1 and Level2), these documents can be imported into the FES platform through some special import tools, meanwhile the errors and non-compliances are printed out. The errors and non-conformities are feedback to the design institute, according to which the design institute upgrades the design documents. Then the ascending version design documents are feedback and imported into the FES platform, and again printed out errors and non-compliances, so the design documents are verified and validated cycle by cycle, ensuring the correctness of the design documents offered by design institute before the final version as much as possible. This paper mainly explains the design and development of FES human-machine interface, including HMI component library software, special import tools software, the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) software and other auxiliary software design and development. Then the design and development of the communication interface program between the Level2 and Level1 is explained, through which the Level2, Level1, and Level0 (the process model of HRP1000 NPP) are integrated, constituting a close-loop verification system. And explains the verification contents, lists some typical kinds of errors in the validation process, including the component type is not consistent between Level1 and Level2, use the wrong library of the HMI, add the wrong color property of the fluid medium, and the component is not named after rules between the developer and the design institute, etc. This paper also lists some examples of verification, elaborates the necessity of FES in the HPR1000 NPP DCS design process; and throughout the whole design and development process of FES, to sum up some problems in the development, meanwhile making a prospect technological development of the FES.

Requirements specification can often exhibit some shortcomings, regarding contents and organization of its partial specification elements. Sometimes, modularization is deficient, with modules dealing with too much information, or the same functionality being specified in different modules. Left unchecked, these inadequacies will propagate themselves to the subsequent phases of the software development and cause problems during maintenance. We have been able to identify a collection of typical deficiencies in the specification of structured documents and we propose a collection of refactorings that minimize or remove them. Doing this early in the development process increases requirements modularity and understandability. A case study is conducted to illustrate the use of these refactoring practices on two existing requirement documents.

Complex integrated control systems are involved in nearly every aspect of offshore drilling, safety, environmental protection and other aspects of vessel operation. Safety, reliability and productivity are expected from high specification control systems such as those found on offshore supply vessels, drilling and production platforms. The ability of a control system to perform as expected is dependent on the underlying software which should be conceptualized, engineered, programmed and verified to provide the required stability and performance. Undetected errors in the software can cause hesitation and doubt for the operator upon execution of subsequent actions, in normal and/or emergency situations. The operator, who should be focused on normal operations, now has to deal with the added complexities and confusion brought about by unexpected software behavior. Traditionally, commissioning and sea trials are periods when there is increased effort to update the functionality of the control systems. Statistics indicate that updates done during traditional commissioning introduces a larger number of unintentional software defects than if the functionality issues were thoroughly vetted during the software development process. During the asset’s operational life, vendor software updates on existing systems should be coordinated to maintain or improve safety and productivity. Software development should be managed to uncover issues early in the development process, where effective solutions can be discussed to resolve issues and manage risk using a number of risk mitigation methods. The software development should follow a process wherein participation is garnered from stakeholders and the operational philosophy is documented in a Functional Description or Concept of Operation document. These documents facilitate safety as well as environmental and project risk mitigation. The challenge of the software development process is compounded by the fact that many different suppliers have diverse requirements and inherent limitations which necessitate the development of effective and specific solutions. Verification of software involves utilizing a number of test cases and exercising the software to uncover defects in the code. Testing the integration involves conducting test to verify proper communication and timeliness of the commands and data transfer between the different connected equipment in the integrated control system. Following an internationally recognized process for software development leads to reduced errors in the software, a more predictable control system and thereby, a safer and more productive asset. The methodology summarized in this paper has been created to assist developers, owners and users in software risk mitigation and is built upon industry best practices.

A number of software tools exist to assist the designer during the design process. These include tools for solid modeling of components, programs for simulating complex systems, for generating machining code and so on. However, a closer examination reveals that most of these tools are of use in the later stages in the design process. Even though design activity analyses showed the initial phases of design to have the maximum impact on the successful design of a product, few tools exist to support the needs of the designer during these critical stages. This paper documents the development of a design support tool (DIST) based on an analysis of a collaborative design activity. Then, results of an experiment are shared, which was designed to investigate DIST’s effectiveness during conceptual design by novice designers.

Assembly process sheets are formal documents used extensively within automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to document and communicate assembly procedure, required tooling, contingency plans, and time study results. These sheets are authored throughout the vehicle life-cycle. Further, various customers use these sheets for training, analyzing the process, and line-balancing. In this research, the primary focus is the time studies analysis that is completed using knowledge contained within the assembly process sheets. In this research, a method and software tool are developed to utilize coupling between part descriptions and process descriptions for assembly time studies. The method is realized through the development of a standardized vocabulary for describing work instructions, a mapping from work instructions to MTM codes, and a tool for extracting relevant part information from CAD models. The approach enables process planners to establish part-process coupling, author work instructions using the controlled vocabulary, to estimate assembly time. A prototype system is developed and tested using examples from an automotive OEM.

Abstract The importance of conceptual modelling more and more becomes recognized in the industrial practice, since it is commonly known that it is during that phase of the product development process where fundamental choices are made that have a strong influence on the result of the development — the process! The process of product development can only be efficient if it is basically put into practice methodically. The time additionally invested in the first steps of the methodical process of product development as it is described in the German guideline VDI 2221 prevents from forgetting important specifications or even overseeing possible ways of solution. This way the phase of conceptual modelling can result in a saving of time needed for product development due to fewer iteration loops for the correction of mistakes in later phases of the process and an increase of the product quality, too. The prerequisite of the efficiency of conceptual modelling is a definition of the product specifications which is as precise as necessary and as abstract as possible in order not to restrict the amount of solutions in an unnecessary way. Looking at the functions a product to be developed has to fulfill, the requirements list serves as a basis for the definition of function structures in which all functions and the relationships amongst each other are defined. This function structure can be utilized not only for the description of the product in an abstract way, but also for structuring the development process as well. With the definition of interfaces between parts of the product, implicitly interface specifications for the work on different parts of the product are defined. The function structure, therefore, can be used as a tool for management in the product development process. Because of this, the information summarised in these documents must be available throughout the entire development process the information technological support of these tools should be standard. Nevertheless, common CAD-Software does not support any step of conceptual modelling. In this paper an information technological support for conceptual modelling is also presented. Furthermore, it is shown what kind of changes in and extensions of common CAX-Systems would be necessary for the realisation of this theory.

A content management system provides some key capabilities that can transform project management for pipeline surveying and engineering practices. These include methods to share and track the information used by project managers, engineers, project technical staff, and the pipeline owner / operator. The business need for content management is explained, along with a unique insight on the key ingredient that makes content management relevant to pipeline project managers: geographic referencing of project documents. Content management features, such as versioning and checkout, are presented, and a working web-based geographic content management system, developed entirely using free open source software, is demonstrated for a sample pipeline project. The working system integrates project documents, written communications, and CAD data through open standards. Conclusions include lessons learned in the development of the system and its use on real-world projects.

Abstract This study documents the development of the Automated Process And Sequence Selector (APASS) model and associated computer software. APASS can be effectively used to automate the selection of machine tools for rotational parts during the process planning procedure for these parts. The APASS model bases its machine tool decisions on part feature description, such as surface shape, technical information! and part header information. Data on the surface shape are transformed automatically based on conversion tables to output suggested machining processes and machine tools. These processes are further filtered by technical information contained within the master and machine files. The ultimate APASS output is a sequence of machining operations based on both the geometrical and dimensional tolerances of the part surfaces and the machine availability. The program has been written in MS PASCAL and currently run on IBM PC/AT compatible.
