Annotation:

In 1990, the creation of underground land is created in the National Land Code. The scarcity of land especially in urban areas has pushed the traditional horizontal land development into vertical land development. Apart from transportation purposes, it is suitable for recreational, storage, and service utility purposes. Within this development, it attracts questions such as how to reconcile the right of surface and underground landowners as the law has allowed the ownership of underground land to be independent and separate from the surface owner. In governing the relationship between the surface and the underground landowners, the provision of access, support, and protection are regulated under the express condition in the document of title. This paper explores the concept of the right of support in Malaysia and the requirement for its application. This paper uses the doctrinal method where statutory provisions, cases, legal articles are examined. In discussing this topic, the practice in Singapore and Australia is compared, and it is suggested in regulating the relationship between surface and underground landowners, the creation of easement to be adopted with the compensation to be awarded to the burdened land.

Ensuring the reliability of support in mine workings has always been one of the most important scientific and technical problems in mining. To ensure the normal operation of underground structures, it is necessary to apply special measures to maintain the support, providing increased stability of rock array. To one of the most important measures is to maintain the reliability of the supports in underground workings and objects of underground construction. The main method of research in this area is the modeling of the reliability of concrete support, as applied to various exogenous and endogenous factors of disturbance. The article provides theoretical provisions of research in physico-chemical processes of corrosion in reinforced concrete for modelling the reliability of structural elements of supports for underground construction objects.

Informal settlements are a hot spot for disaster risks worldwide. They are characterised by limited provision of basic services. Water being a critical life support resource is not adequately provided. Residents usually rely on unsafe water sources of hand dug wells. Pit latrines are a major facility for sanitary purposes. Further, informal settlements high population density residing in poor housing units is a common characteristics. Risks of underground water pollution are high due to the proximity of sanitation facilities to unprotected shallow wells increasing the possibility of feacal contamination by ecoli and coli form. This paper presents a case of Makululu informal settlement in Zambia. A total of 385 respondents were identified at random while purposive sampling identified key informants. Water samples collected from 12 hand dug wells located close to pit latrines were tested for coli form and ecoli. Testing was done before and after the rainy season to analyse the relationship between pit latrines and wells as well as the relationship with rainfall distribution pattern to ascertain levels of risks. Water was tested to determine the levels of contamination based on the presence of ecoli and coli form. Laboratory results indicated that 90 percent of water consumed in Makululu informal settlement is highly contaminated by faecal coliforms.

The purpose of the article is to study the process of creation and functioning of the underground Ukrainian Red Cross, its interaction with the local population during the period 1943-1944 in Galicia under the conditions of the Nazi occupation. The methodological basis of the research is the general scientific principles of objectivity, comprehensiveness and historicism. The work uses logical, problem-chronological and comparative methods. Scientific novelty. The article attempts to analyze the structure, territorial division and management structure, and the main directions of activity of this organization within the limits of Galicia, as one separate region. Practical meaning. The study of the activities of this organization is an important element for understanding the principles of the work of the underground Ukrainian Red Cross as a component of the red cross movement on the territory of Galicia in the first half of the twentieth century. Main results and conclusion. The article deals with the activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army on the territory of Galicia during the period of the Nazi occupation. The aggregate of factors that influenced the underground activity of the Ukrainian Red Cross was highlighted. In particular, the regional features that caused certain differences in the work of the Red Cross on this territory in comparison with other areas of UIA activity were investigated. The structure, territorial division and management structure of this organization are described within the limits of one separate region – Galicia. The main directions of the work of the Underground Red Cross are considered. The peculiarities of provision of medical care, the organization of hospitals and the problem of the training of medical personnel in the conditions of the underground are analyzed. The main ways of material and technical support of the Ukrainian Red Cross are highlighted. The role of the local population and the medical community of Galicia in providing the Red Cross with medications, medicinal plants and the necessary inventory is revealed. The author of the study concludes that for the activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross during the period 1943-1944 on the territory of Galicia were characterized by their regional features that facilitated or created more favorable conditions for the functioning of this organization. It should be noted separately that the role of the local population in supporting the work of this structure – the provision of medicines, food and money. In general, the author evaluates the activity of UHF in this period as an important stage of the red-circular movement in the territory of Galicia in the first half of the twentieth century. The Underground Red Cross is regarded as an organization that has become the successor of humanitarian communities of the same type that functioned in the specified territory in previous years, in particular the URC department in Lviv, established in June 1941. One of the important factors contributing to the work of this organization was the activity of the medical environment, which manifested itself in promoting the activities of this structure by well-known doctors and graduates of medical higher education institutions. The formation of the modern Ukrainian natural gas market is accompanied by profound transformations of the national gas infrastructure: the creation and operation of new market operators, the redistribution of infrastructure facilities, the development and implementation of new requirements for the effective functioning of the entire system. At the same time, this requires from all parties a verified and balances strategy for the optimal implementation of all the obligations that Ukraine has undertaken to fully implement the requirements of the EU Third Energy Package, which aims to create an effective natural gas market based on the principles of free competition, proper consumer protection and security of supply. Despite the fact that the capacity of the Ukrainian gas transmission system and gas storages is one of the largest in Europe, the unbanding process has caused a number of threats in the area of regulatory support for production activities, requiring the consolidation of specialists' efforts to form optimal solutions to the problems that have arisen. In addition, the lengthy process of reforming and reorganizing the Ukrainian gas distribution system has led to a situation where the work of a natural gas distribution operator is facing a risk of imbalance in terms of inefficient standardization of the main areas of operation to meet the EU legislation requirements implemented in Ukraine. Therefore, to develop basic directions for the future work of gas infrastructure operators, it is necessary to take into account the acting capabilities of existing system for transportation, underground storage and gas distribution (taking into account the significant number of standardized indicators defined by the existing normative documents of the former USSR) and in accordance with the trends in the development of the European gas infrastructure introduce economically and technically feasible measures to standardize performance activities. Such works have to be incorporated into integrated research programs, during which regional and international trends are to be taken into account and adapted, the results of which will be the basis for future roadmaps and programs for the development of natural gas supply and distribution systems.

London Underground Limited (LUL) has awarded GEC ALSTHOM (GECA) a service provision contract to provide and maintain 106 new trains under a leasing agreement for the next 20 years. The service will be provided to the Northern Line, with LUL retaining responsibility for operational control. Maintenance will be performed in the existing Northern Line facilities and the depots will be leased from LUL to GECA for the contract period. The maintenance depots require modernization to support the new trains and GECA Railway Maintenance Services Limited (RML) will manage and operate the depots. RML is now responsible for delivering the existing trains to the Northern Line and for introducing the new fleet of trains while the maintenance facilities are modernized. This paper addresses the modifications made to the maintenance facilities for the new fleet of trains. It discusses the philosophy behind the redesign of the depot layout, the steps throughout construction and the maintenance equipment necessary to provide the service required to meet the needs of the customer.

To accommodate traffic volume on roads due to ever-increasing population growth, the widening of highways and motorways is in high demand. Nevertheless, the widening of tunnels on these road networks is quite complex due to the presence of numerous rock types, in situ stress, and different widening modes. To overcome these complexities, eight different tunnel shapes were simulated under varying support conditions for asymmetric and symmetric widening. It was found that the tunnels with a round shape, such as horseshoe and semicircular with flatbed, are more effective for asymmetric widening, whereas the provision of a rounded invert in these shapes can reverse the widening option to symmetric. Furthermore, an insignificant effect of the difference in asymmetric and symmetric widening of regular tunnel shapes, such as box, rectangular, and semi-elliptical, was found. A full factorial design statistical analysis confirmed the decrease in tunnel deformation by using various tunnel support systems and showed a significant deformation difference according to monitoring locations at the tunnel periphery. The deformation difference in the case of both tunnel widening modes was also analyzed according to different design parameters. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of rock mass behavior when the widening of any underground opening is carried out.

In some cases, support provision can be predicted by the history of prior social exchange. Receiving may encourage providing. Moreover, personality dispositions may moderate the degree to which persons reciprocate support. Co‐student dyads (N = 43) facing an exam repeatedly reported their levels of received and provided support. Data revealed both direct and moderated reciprocal support provision. Actors' receipt of emotional support predicted the subsequent change in actors' provision of emotional support, indicating reciprocity. Also, more reciprocal emotional support provision was found in introverted and open individuals, whereas more reciprocal instrumental support provision was observed in introverts and less open individuals. Findings were partially validated when partner‐provided support instead of actor‐received support served as the predictor of later support provision. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Providing information about contributions to public goods is known to generate further contributions. However, it is often impossible to provide verifiable information on contributions. Through a large-scale field experiment and a series of laboratory experiments, I show that nonbinding announcements of support for a public good encourage others to contribute, even when actual contributions might not or cannot be made. Providing a way to easily announce support for a charity increases donations by $865 per workplace fundraising campaign (or 16 percent of average giving). I discuss implications for understanding prosocial behavior and for organizations aiming to increase contributions to public goods. (JEL C93, D64, D83, H41, L31)

When and why do groups participating in mass dissent choose to initiate terrorist campaigns? I argue that groups involved in civil wars and mass civil resistance might face similar organizational pressures, which encourage the initiation of terrorism due to higher tactical effectiveness. Internal organizational pressure might depend on leaders’ expectations of a decline in followers’ commitment with protracted use of mass tactics. This is likely to motivate leaders to initiate terrorist campaigns to secure organizational survival. External organizational pressures might depend on increasing dissident campaigns’ fragmentation. This intensifies competition making leaders more likely to initiate terrorism so as to establish themselves at the forefront of their movements. The findings provide empirical support consistent with my claims and indicate no significant difference between civil wars and mass civil resistance movements with regards to these effects. Contrary to the common idea that the use of conventional violence should entail a higher willingness to engage in illegal violence against non-combatants, this finding suggests that conflict dynamics affect the decision to initiate terrorism and that terrorist campaigns have a coherent strategic logic across different types of mass dissent.

Andekaleka Hydroelectric Development, Republic of Malagasy (Madagascar), comprises an 8 m high intake dam, a 4 km long unlined power tunnel, a surge shaft, a concrete-lined penstock, four steel-lined branch penstocks, an underground powerhouse, and a 0.5 km long tailrace tunnel. The scheme develops a 235 m fall in the Vohitra River. Two 29 MW Francis turbines have been installed, with space left for two more identical units.This paper describes the geotechnical aspects of the underground design for the scheme. The predominant rock type is good quality granitic gneiss, which required minimal underground support and lining. Where the power tunnel 'daylights' and crosses the Sahantsiva River, steel and concrete lining and drainage tunnels have been provided.The length and design of the steel and concrete lining and the system of underground drainage are described along with the design and support for the powerhouse cavern and the support of the powerhouse crane beams on rock shoulders. Provision of both high standards of thesis supervision and high quality research environments are required for doctoral candidates to flourish. An important component of ensuring quality provision of research resources is the soliciting of feedback from research students and the provision from research supervisors and institutions of timely and constructive responses to such feedback. In this manuscript we describe the use of locally developed survey instruments to elicit student feedback. We then demonstrate how actions taken in response to this student feedback can help establish a virtuous circle that enhances doctoral students’ research experiences. We provide examples of changes to supervisory practice and resource allocation based on feedback and show the positive impact on subsequent student evaluations. While the examples included here are local, the issues considered and the methods and interventions developed are applicable to all institutions offering research degrees.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Urban flooding refers to the phenomenon of water accumulation in cities due to strong precipitation or continuous precipitation exceeding urban drainage capacity. At present, the problem of urban flooding has become another major urban disease after other urban problems such as crowded people, traffic congestion and environmental pollution (Weiwu W, et al. 2015). In order to better cope with the problem of waterlogging, there are many hydrodynamic models that can accurately simulate the process of pipe network drainage and water accumulation. However, there are currently two limitations that limit the practicality of these hydrodynamic models. First, these models often require a large amount of input data as a support. These data exhibit multi-source, heterogeneity, multi-scale, multi-resolution and other characteristics, which bring great difficulty to data acquisition and processing (Dongdong Z, et al. 2014). Second, the analysis results of the model contain a large amount of waterlogging related information. However, this information is usually represented by simple texts and tables, which is not conducive to interpretation, transmission and visualization. Especially for location-related information, such as flooding points, flow information of various parts of the drainage pipe, water depth in the flooded area, etc., non-interactive two-dimensional maps or tables can cause inconvenience to disaster management and decision-making.</p><p>Therefore, a proper data model, respecting the needs of integration of multisource input and output data of waterlogging simulation and analysis and the needs of 3D visualization in front end, is needed. As a matter of fact, what in the last years has proven to be an emerging and effective approach is the adoption of standard-based, integrated semantic 3D virtual city models, which represent an information hub for most of the above-mentioned needs (Agugiaro et al. 2018). In particular, being based on open standards (e.g. on the CityGML standard proposed by the Open Geospatial Consortium), virtual city models firstly reduce the effort in terms of data preparation and provision. Secondly, they offer clear data structures, ontologies and semantics to facilitate data exchange between different domains and applications, and 3D visualization which is essential for crisis management (Herman L, Řezník T, 2015). However, a standardized and omni-comprehensive urban data model covering also the waterlogging domain is still missing. Even CityGML falls partially short when it comes to the definition of specific entities and attributes for waterlogging-related applications.</p><p>This study aims to propose an Waterlogging Application Domain Extension (ADE) for CityGML 2.0, which is used to integrate the multi-source input data and the rich waterlogging related information of waterlogging simulation and analysis. In order to achieve the above objectives, the following contents will be investigated:</p><p>(1) Analysis of urban hydrodynamic models’ function and their data characteristics</p><p>Analyze the function of the hydrodynamic model in the city, and explore the source, precision and organizational structure of the input and output data during the simulation and analysis of waterlogging.</p><p>(2) Construction of waterlogging data integration model based on CityGML</p><p>Based on the CityGML2.0 and its ADE mechanism, we will construct a conceptual model of waterlogging data integration standard, to describe the geometric and spatial structure of urban buildings, vegetation, land-use, underground pipelines, waterlogging related entities, etc. And more information about waterlogging, such as flooding points, drainage network carrying pressure, catchment area, etc., will be integrated into the corresponding fields of the data integration model in a reasonable way to facilitate Internet transmission and visualization.</p><p>(3) Interactive 3D visualization method based on the proposed waterlogging ADE</p><p>Based on the rich waterlogging-related information in the waterlogging ADE, combined with 3D visualization technology, the 3D dynamic interactive visualization method is explored, in order to provide more intuitive data support for waterlogging disaster management and decision-making.</p><p>Through this study, we expect to improve the efficiency and practicability of the current waterlogging simulation and analysis by integrating the waterlogging related data from multi-source based on CityGML. As the result of the research, we intend to develop a prototype system based on the multi-source waterlogging related data integration method proposed in this study. With this standard, we can provide unified and standard data support for the waterlogging model. At the same time, the results of the waterlogging models are automatically integrated into the data set for dynamic 3D visualization.</p>

Based on the basic principles of underground engineering support, by support strength from the technical specification and practical observation data, we can reach a conclusion on the basis of soft rock underground cavern stability with lower confining pressure controlling measures. The supporting force is 3MPa in average, the max value of the supporting force is 9MPa. The supporting forces belong to the range of lower confining pressure.

Pune has witnessed enormous industrial growth, rapid urbanization in the recent past and has put the city's travel infrastructure to stress. Being a densely populated area, Pune's traffic needs cannot be met by road-based transportation systems and additional flyovers. Considering this, the Pune Metro project a strong public transport system partly elevated, and partly underground Line 1 and the completely elevated Line 2 has been discussed and undertaken by Maha Metro Rail Corporation. With the rise in demand, the responsibility for a safe and efficient public transport system also increases hence proper planning, designing, and execution play a vital role. The underground tunnel stretch of the Pune Metro Line 1 project is carried out by TBM and by segmental lining as a support system. By geotechnical parameters and FEM, RS2 software author analyses the ground behaviour and support system and conveys a basic understanding of ground behaviour and results in guidelines for designing the underground tunnel.

The Mathematics Resources Centre (MASH) at the University of Bath received funding from the Thriplow Charitable Trust to provide employment opportunities to vocational entry students. We have used this funding to enhance the support provision for students who have difficulties with the mathematical content of their course. Ideas were given to the students as to what support provision enhancement may look like, but ultimately it was left up to them to determine the most appropriate focus of any additional support. In this article, the approaches taken, the changes made and the results achieved to date are presented.
