The present study was conducted to know the experience of girls to their body image and outlook. The objective was to explore the perception of girls about their body image, level of satisfaction with it, methods that are used to achieve certain body images and the psychological affects and pressure put forth due to prescribed body images. A sample of 60 female students was taken from different departments of University of Karachi. A combination of closed and open ended questionnaire was filled by these female students. Results showed that most of them were experiencing trouble with their body image. They were concerned mostly about their body image and some of them were using different methods of weight loss. Majority agreed that media plays an important role in projecting and promoting to have lower weight and focusing body size. Due to this they feel a pressure that if they could not meet those standards they will be rejected. The study concludes that girls are conscious towards their body image because of their experiences. Therefore they give importance to slim and smart body size and they assume that body image is more important for both boys and girls.

Images are powerful means of communicating scientific results; a strong image can underscore an experimental result more effectively than any words, whereas a poor image can readily undermine a result or conclusion. Developmental biologists rely extensively on images to compare normal versus abnormal development and communicate their results. Most undergraduate lab science courses do not actively teach students skills to communicate effectively through images. To meet this need, we developed a series of image portfolio assignments and imaging workshops in our Developmental Biology course to encourage students to develop communication skills using images. The improvements in their images over the course of the semester were striking, and on anonymous course evaluations, 73% of students listed imaging skills as the most important skill or concept they learned in the course. The image literacy skills acquired through simple lab assignments and in-class workshops appeared to stimulate confidence in the student's own evaluations of current scientific literature to assess research conclusions. In this essay, we discuss our experiences and methodology teaching undergraduates the basic criteria involved in generating images that communicate scientific content and provide a road map for integrating this curriculum into any upper-level biology laboratory course.

The purpose of this research is to compare the previous stereotypes of the scientist image and the current stereotypes of the inventor image among Korean students. For this purpose, three primary schools located in the metropolitan area of Korea were selected under a convenience sampling method, with one class selected for each of the 2nd, 4th, and 6th grades of each school. The conclusions of this research are as follows. First, analyzing students' stereotypes of the inventor image showed that older students had more stereotypes about inventors than younger students did. Second, as a result of analyzing the images according to each indicator, Korean students were found to have stereotypes about the inventor. Third, the symbol of research was expressed together with one of the science-related experiment tool and the making-related experiment tool. Fourth, primary students perceived the inventor as mainly male. Male students mostly drew male inventors and female students mostly drew female inventors. Based on the conclusions obtained through this research, various educational implications to be reflected in primary technology education were suggested to escape the stereotypes of the inventor’s image. This paper describes a course in image computation that is designed to follow and build up an established course in computer graphics. The course is centered on images: how they are generated, manipulated, matched and symbolically described. It builds on the student's knowledge of coordinate systems and the perspective projection pipeline. It covers image generation techniques not covered by the computer graphics course, most notably ray tracing. It introduces students to basic image processing concepts such as Fourier analysis and then to basic computer vision topics such as principal components analysis, edge detection and symbolic feature matching. The goal is to prepare students for advanced work in either computer vision or computer graphics.

Abstract Diagnostic errors in radiology are frequent and can cause severe patient harm. Despite large performance differences between radiologists and non-radiology physicians, the latter often interpret medical images because electronic health records make images available throughout the hospital. Some people argue that non-radiologists should not diagnose medical images at all, and that medical school should focus on teaching ordering skills instead of image interpretation skills. We agree that teaching ordering skills is crucial as most physicians will need to order medical images in their professional life. However, we argue that the availability of medical images is so ubiquitous that it is important that non-radiologists are also trained in the basics of medical image interpretation and, additionally in recognizing when radiological consultancy should be sought. In acute situations, basic image interpretations skills can be life-saving. We plead for a radiology curriculum for all medical students. This should include the interpretation of common abnormalities on chest and skeletal radiographs and a basic distinction of normal from abnormal images. Furthermore, substantial attention should be given to the correct ordering of radiological images. Finally, it is critical that students are trained in deciding when to consult a radiologist.

The article is devoted to the substantiation and results of a study of implicit notions of a happy person in elementary school students. The methodological foundation is constructed by D.A. Leontiev’s two-level model of happiness, K. Riff’s concept of happiness as the basis of psychological well-being, and V.L. Sitnikov’s concept of the image of a person. The deployed research method is “SPI(H) — the Structure of a Person’s Image (Hierarchical)” (V.Sitnikov) including the verbal and non-verbal associative experiment with the subsequent content analysis. The novelty of the study lies in the comparison of the image of a happy person and self-image through the psychosemantic method including a comparative analysis of the notions of a happy person in children from complete and incomplete families. A happy person is associated by elementary school children with an emotionally positive attitude towards life, a responsible and caring attitude towards people, the presence of a family and active interaction with it, less often with success in educational and intellectual activity and material well-being, as well as the presence of friends. A happy person is idealized by younger students, however, their image is more abstract compared to children’s self-images. Elementary school students from complete families are characterized by greater conformity of the self-image with the image of a happy person whereas only half of the children from incomplete families show such correspondence. The predominant modality of both images is positive in all children. Social, bodily, and metaphorical characteristics are more common in the image of a happy person among children from incomplete families while the conventional social role characteristics dominate among children from complete families. The prospects for further study of the image of a happy person in elementary school children within the framework of family psychology are outlined.

The ability to envision what is not directly seen is important in the visual arts, since artists do more than reproduce what they see. Such envisioning requires visual imagery abilities. In this study, we examined whether art students ( n = 32) have enhanced visual imagery abilities compared to nonart students ( n = 40). We administered four tasks designed to assess visual imagery. Three tasks assessed the ability to activate mental images: vividness of visual imagery, recognition of out-of-focus pictures, and abstraction; the fourth task assessed the ability to manipulate mental images: mental rotation. We also administered a verbal IQ and a creativity test to determine whether these measures should be included as covariates in our analyses. Results showed that art students excelled on two of the three image activation tasks, vividness of visual imagery and abstraction, but did not excel on the image manipulation task of mental rotation.

Very little is known about body satisfaction among minority children. This study examined the relationship between perceived and actual body size and Body Mass Index among 43 low-socioeconomic Hispanic 3rd-graders. Researchers measured participants’ Body Mass Index; students self-reported Perceived Ideal Self Image and Perceived Actual Self Image using Collins’ (1991) pictorial instrument scale of seven child body images that illustrate body weight from very thin to obese. The majority of students chose body images from the scale that depicted a healthy weight for both their Perceived Ideal Self Image and Perceived Actual Self Image. More boys than girls chose underweight as their Perceived Ideal Self Image. Thirty percent of the students were found to be overweight and 30 percent were at risk for being overweight. A small positive correlation between Perceived Actual Self Image and Body Mass Index was found.

In the past decades much research on the image of the scientist has been conducted, but the image of the specific scientist who does biological work, namely, the biologist, is under researched. Without this aspect of research school biology education may operate nowhere near to promoting the growth of students’ appropriate image of the biologist. Drawing on previous approach, this research presents students’ images of the biologist by administering a Draw Biologist Test (DBT) to 121 lower-secondary school students from the 7th, 8th and 9th grades. Findings indicate that when compared with the images elsewhere, the lower-secondary school students exhibit similar patterns regarding gender, teamwork and general attitude, but tend to include more descriptors of white lab coat, tidy hairstyle, microscope, other ethnicities, serious looking, practical activities and indoor contexts, fewer descriptors of knowledge and technology symbols and less gloomy side of biological work. It is suggested that school biology education should mitigate the gendered image of the biologist, duly expose students to more theoretical and outdoor biological activities, value cooperation and collaboration as well as transform students’ positive attitude into future engagements. Key words: lower-secondary school, Draw Biologist Test, image of biologist, educational implications.

In this research, we wanted to clarify how gender images are different or invariant and related to parents, attributes, and the attitude of controlling life (locus of control) in two cultural contexts, Japan and Finland. For this purpose, students' ideal gender images, consisting of ideal mother, female, father and male images, and parents' similarity to the four ideal gender images were studied in 135 Japanese and 119 Finnish university students. Major findings were (a) Japanese students' ideal gender images were more stereotypic than those of Finnish students; (b) students' ideal mother image and parents' similarity to the ideal mother image were related only to their sex, which supports Jung's theory; (c) students socially learned other ideal gender images, but these did not fit with expectation from social learning theory; (d) Japanese students' mothers are models or examples of gender images, but Finnish male students did not seem to base their ideal gender images on their parents. Implication of measures was discussed.

Our aim was to motivate students to study control engineering and image processing. To this end, we designed a motivation system based on the ARCS model, developed by John M. Keller, to motivate learners. We used a drone as the control object. The ARCS model consists of four steps: attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. The control process is performed by capturing images from the drone’s camera on a PC via Wi-Fi, and detecting a target color using an image processing technique. Then, the PC sends the control inputs from a PID controller back to the drone to track the target color by keeping it at the center of the images. With this system, students can gain knowledge on control engineering and image processing by tuning the parameters of PID controller and image processing, and observing the responses of the drone. To assess the effectiveness of our system, we requested 150 first-grade technical college students, who had no prior knowledge of control engineering and image processing, to attend our lecture. After the lecture, the students were asked to answer a questionnaire on their interests. The result demonstrated that over 80% of them expressed an interest in learning these two techniques.

Summary Objectives: Images play an important role in medicine. Finding the desired images within the multitude of online image databases is a time-consuming and frustrating process. Existing websites do not meet all the requirements for an ideal learning environment for medical students. This work intends to establish a new web portal providing a centralized access point to a selected number of online image databases. Methods: A back-end system locates images on given websites and extracts relevant meta-data. The images are indexed using UMLS and the MetaMap system provided by the US National Library of Medicine. Specially developed functions allow to create individual navigation structures. The front-end system suits the specific needs of medical students. A navigation structure consisting of several medical fields, university curricula and the ICD-10 was created. The images may be accessed via the given navigation structure or using different search functions. Cross-references are provided by the semantic relations of the UMLS. Results: Over 25,000 images were identified and indexed. A pilot evaluation among medical students showed good first results concerning the acceptance of the developed navigation structures and search features. Conclusion: The integration of the images from different sources into the UMLS semantic network offers a quick and an easy-to-use learning environment.

The main principles for innovation development in art design education include conformity, student-centeredness, and overall optimization. The dynamic image fusion enhancement algorithm is mainly divided into five functional modules, which are used to calculate multi-scale gradient, structure tensor, and target gradient for the fused image, solve the steepest descent method and output normalized images, respectively

The Biological Images Project is the culmination of the four summers I have spent at Apple Computer. In short is is a software package which allows students to manipulate and explore biological images (i.e. micrographs, CTs, MRIs, etc.), Consisting of four sections - interface, biological images, image processing, and communication software - this package can serve as a powerful educational medium. The interface supports the more traditional forms of teaching - textual notes and brief lectures. The collection of biological images allows students to visualize biological structures in ways they never have before and exposes them to a variety of scientific techniques and tools. Image processing lets the student interact with the images, to manipulate, explore, discover and in some ways gain ownership of the image. Finally the communication package will provide the students a medium to share their discoveries in an interactive manner and submit them to peer review.

Students specialising in image and video system engineering need to know why DCT is important in their field of interest and to understand the influence of DCT-based image compression on picture quality. Therefore, we have developed educational software, called DCTlab, that helps students to analyse DCT application in still image compression systems. This paper describes software characteristics, its application in a digital television course and learning outcomes.

This paper aims to explore the effectiveness of an Importance–Performance Analysis approach to assess destination image. It focuses on the image of the UK for Chinese students studying in the country. This is because the destination image of a certain country for a homogenous group, such as Chinese students, has not been studied enough, and this specific market is central for the UK, especially its education and tourism sector. In total, 23 attributes were examined, and each was found in one of the five quadrants. Two attributes related to the environmental aspect of the UK were found in the Competitive Attributes quadrant. These attributes are key strengths of the UK in relation to Chinese students’ images of the country. Three attributes placed in the Keep Up Good Work quadrant are associated with British culture and heritage. This signifies that the UK should keep utilising these resources to improve Chinese students’ images of the nation. Fourteen attributes were identified in the Concentrate Here quadrant. These attributes include essential elements of tourism such as local cuisine and transportation. Their roles are vital in enhancing the image of the UK for Chinese students, but more efforts must be made to this end.

Objective: awas to evaluate the influence of mentoplasty on esthetic perception of dental surgeons, dental students and lay persons. In addition, to determine whether the outstanding chin affects the perceived desire for orthognathic surgery. Material and Methods: An image of an ideal silhouette was created. This image was manipulated to create another six images with different degrees of retrogenia and progenia in increments, advancing and receding the chin on a scale of 5 mm (from +15 to -15 mm) in the anteroposterior and vertical directions. Once the images were obtained, a questionnaire was created, which was evaluated by lay persons, dental surgeons and dental students (n = 50). The evaluators used a visual analog scale to analyze the images, establishing a score ranging from 0 to 10. Associated with the scale, the evaluators were asked whether they wished to have some surgical correction performed if the image in question were a representation of their own facial profile. Results: demonstrated that image H (0 mm) was ranked as the most attractive by the dental surgeons, while the dental students and lay persons scored B (-5 mm) as the best image. In general, images A (+15 mm) and D (-15 mm) were those that most induced a desire for corrective surgery. Conclusion: the prognathic and retrognathic facial profiles were unpleasant and perceptible to the dentist, dental student and lay person. The more projected and retracted the chin was, the greater was the desire to have orthognathic surgery performed.KeywordsEsthetics; Mentoplasty; Face.

Objective – This study investigated the image-seeking preferences of university freshmen to gain a better understanding of how they search for pictures for assignments. Methods – A survey was emailed to a random sample of 1,000 freshmen enrolled at Oregon State University in the fall of 2009. A total of 63 surveys were returned. Results – The majority of students indicated they would use Google to find a picture. Nineteen respondents said they would use a library, librarians, and/or archives. Conclusions – The results indicate the majority of students in our study would use Google to find an image for coursework purposes; yet the students who suggested they would use Google did not mention evaluating the images they might find or have concerns about copyright issues. Undergraduate students would benefit from having visual literacy integrated into standard information literacy instruction to help them locate, evaluate, and legally use the images they find online. In addition, libraries, librarians, archivists, and library computer programmers should work to raise the rankings of library digital photo collections in online search engines like Google.

The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of the use of image media on the learning outcomes of students of the German Language Education Study Program in Kontrastive Kulturkunde courses that use image media and those that do not use images. The use of image media applied in this study follows what Macaire and Hosch (2004: 67) have suggested about the function of images, that images can reactivate students' initial knowledge (Vorwissen der Schülerinnen und Schüler), show similarities/authenticity (Authentizität) and indicate actual situations (Aktualität), a communicative perspective image of an object and a representative image, which is a visual that depicts the state of nature and people's lives. (Perspektive und Repräsentativität) and which have similarities or differ with their own culture (Nähe oder Ferne zur eigenen Kultur). This research was motivated by the low learning outcomes of students in Kontrastive Kulturkunde courses. The type of this research used is experiment with one group pretest - posttest design with t-test analysis technique with significance level α = 0.05. Testing the effectiveness of this study is with the use of image media. The target of this study was 20 students of semester 4, German Language Education Study Program FKIP Pattimura University Ambon in Kontrastive Kulturkunde courses. The result of the calculation appears that, tcount > ttable=1,729 which is 11,103 > 1,729. Based on the results of the calculation it can be said that, there is a noticeable difference between the value after and before the application of the image media

The article discusses questions of identity narratives emerging from the responses collected from Polish university students with disabilities to be analyzed by the author. The social image of persons with disabilities, to a large extent shaped by media, is simplified. Stereotypically, images of persons with disabilities function in the antinomy “victim” – “hero,” always weaved around disability as the organizing category. Also the university community seems to be prone to succumb to stereotypes and perceive students with disabilities more through the perspective of their disabilities than through their “studentship.” Whereas a different image of the students’ identity emerges from their own narrative. The image is built around the “normality” discourse. Students with disabilities see themselves the way they want to be viewed – as regular students.

Introduction Because of the preponderance of visual images, many mathematics texts are wholly or largely inaccessible to students who are blind. This study investigated how much description is sufficient to communicate math content in different types of images. Methods Representative math textbooks from grades five, eight, and 11, aligned to the Common Core, were selected. Mutually exclusive and exhaustive image categories were identified. Clear examples of each image category were chosen, and digital files were created containing the examples and surrounding textual material. Files replicated the printed page as closely as possible, and all elements (words, math expressions, and descriptions of images) were readable by JAWS. Forty-four students who are visually impaired (that is, those who are blind or had low vision) listened to the math pages and answered questions related to the content contained in the images. Results Students answered content-related questions better with more description, but across four description conditions with varying amounts of description the highest correct rate was low (29%). In looking at individual image categories, students had the most correct answers for number lines (41.0%). Rates of 20% to 33% correct were demonstrated for image categories of shapes, tables, line graphs, bar graphs, and ray diagrams. Correct rates for equations, pie charts, and maps were inconsistent or lower than 15%. Students were positive about math and did not indicate many problems with math texts. Discussion Descriptions of visual images can communicate important math information, but there are images for which no level of description is sufficient. Many students in the study were not aware of how much visual math content to which they were not provided access. Implications for practitioners Math texts need to be more accessible for students who are visually impaired. Although describing visual images can improve access to content, that may not be sufficient. Materials should be provided in several formats simultaneously so students can approach material in the mode that fits their needs in a variety of contexts.

The article analyzes the products of artistic, graphic and verbal activity, objective measures of actualization of the world image in students of different majors and courses of Kiev National University of Culture and Arts on the basis of allocation of the dominant dichotomous signs, and criteria of interrelated components of the world image (physical, cognitive, psychosomatic, emotional and social). We compared the representation of these characteristics in all artworks (group 1: 1438 students) and in a dedicated group of pictures of students, for whom the dominant channel of verbal representation of the world image is perceptual one (group 2: 145 students). We revealed the multifunctional indicators of perceptual representation, and composition category in the mapping of the various components of the world image: harmony, integrity and consistency of form, proportionality and flexibility, structuredness. The perceptual image of the world as a reference image is displayed in the form of compositional integrity, it corrects all the other images, affects the peculiarities of their manifestations in artistic activity; it has a personal meaning, which characterizes the attitude of the individual to the world.

In the education context, the majority of studies on student intentions (school selection, retention and dropout) focused on the internal affecting factors (e.g., sex, family background, school performance and satisfaction). Those on the external determinants (e.g., school image) seem to be too thin, although these factors can be more easily and effectively regulated by education institutions. School image, however, does not stay unchanged but revolves over time. Nevertheless, the instability of school image has not been examined by previous research. Based on these understandings, this study aims to examine the change of a school department’s images with the input of rap music as an image change agent. In addition, it investigates the correlation between department images and student intentions. Using the quantitative data collected from 96 students in three low-grade classes (1-3) in a junior technology college in the Tohoku region of Japan, this study found that the impacts that a piece of rap music can produce is marginally limited, and the images of the department are decaying. In addition, the study figured out that department images are significant to the formation of students’ intentions to go to the advanced course and to recommend the department, but don’t have any significant effect on students’ intention to finish their five-year study. Some implications for the management of education activities to retain and recruit students are proposed based on these outcomes.
