This paper is a follow-up and elaboration of the paper published in the JTDH 2022 Conference Proceedings on manual semantic annotation of named entities based on a proposed set of annotations for a corpus of modernist literary texts. We first briefly describe the corpus and introduce the annotation scheme, then focus on the results of additional analyses, and conclude with further challenges and issues we identified with respect to established NER systems and practices of related projects. Overall, we identify several categories of proper names, foreign language elements, and bibliographic citations, but focus here on the challenges of annotating names of literary characters and place names, and provide examples of the results of preliminary analyses of these entities in the corpus.

AbstractMatsuda et al. (Matsuda, K., Hu, Z., Nakano, K., Hamana, M. & Takeichi, M. (2007) Bidirectionalization transformation based on automatic derivation of view complement functions. In Proceedings of the International Conference on Functional Programming. ACM Press, pp. 47–58) and Voigtländer (Voigtländer, J. (2009) Bidirectionalization for free! In Proceedings of Principles of Programming Languages. ACM Press, pp. 165–176) have introduced two techniques that given a source-to-view function provide an update propagation function mapping an original source and an updated view back to an updated source, subject to standard consistency conditions. Previously, we developed a synthesis of the two techniques, based on a separation of shape and content aspects (Voigtländer, J., Hu, Z., Matsuda, K. & Wang, M. (2010) Combining syntactic and semantic bidirectionalization. In Proceedings of the International Conference on Functional Programming. ACM Press, pp. 181–192). Here we carry that idea further, reworking the technique of Voigtländer such that any shape bidirectionalizer (based on the work of Matsuda et al. (2007) or not) can be used as a plug-in, to good effect. We also provide a data-type-generic account, enabling wider reuse, including the use of pluggable bidirectionalization itself as a plug-in.

The reception of Proclus’ Elements of Theology and the Book of Causes is certainly one of the most significant and complex themes for understanding the influence of Neoplatonic thought from the sixth century to the modern age. This volume is the second of three edited by Dragos Calma, in which the proceedings of the Parisian conference (12–13 February 2016) dedicated to the reception of the Elements of Theology and the Book of Causes are published. It gathers 18 contributions (12 in English, 5 in French, and 1 in German) by various scholars who have addressed the topic in question by focusing on specific aspects of the reception of these two texts between the sixth and 16th centuries in very different periods and cultural contexts. For this reason, the weighty volume is divided into five sections according to the cultural and geographical areas examined:(1) Byzantium,(2) The Caucasus,(3) The Lands of Islam,(4) The Latin West, and(5) The Hebrew Tradition. In view of the breadth and richness of the themes dealt with, I will limit myself to some brief and summary remarks on the main topics addressed in each essay.

The article, brought to the attention of readers, develops the outlined sections of the author’s report “The Theme of Death and Immortality in the Fine Arts of the Modern and Contemporary Times” presented at the conference of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts (November 21-22, 2019). The initiators of the conference explained their choice of one of the global and eternal themes of world art related to the very essence of the existence of humankind and each person by the fact that if ethnologists and culturologists have systematically studied certain aspects of thanatology, the existing extensive art material has yet to be brought together. Of the priority areas proposed by the conference program compilers, the author of this article chooses to say: “There is no death!”: the theme of immortality, resurrection, eternal and repetitive life in art”. The theme of memory, which occupied an important place in the art of the Great Patriotic War, is the subject of research of the published article. It is most fully expressed in such a field of creative and scientific thought of the war years as memorial architecture. Widely held contests for the projects of monuments became a noticeable phenomenon of the artistic life of those years, and the graphic works were included in the valuable fund of Russian cultural heritage. Observing the birth of a new monument, the author of the article notes that memory and remembrance concepts underwent significant changes during the war years. The attitude to memory became an essential measurement of the very concept of memoriality, its worldview, semantic and symbolic content. Identifying the ways of interaction of the perceiving, experiencing, and interpreting consciousness, during which the mythologeme of "return" begins to be realized, a kind of regeneration of damaged cultural tissues takes place, is the purpose of this small study. The review of the archetypal concepts of “Life, Death, Immortality”, these main subjects in the works of literature, fine art, and wartime architecture, allows us to see what significant qualitative changes occurred in the spiritual world of an individual and led to profound changes in the artistic and cultural process in general.

In 2022, the national scientific-practical conference “Natural science education in a comprehensive school – 2022” was held remotely (online). Such conference format was determined by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic; therefore, the conference for the third time already, could not take place in its usual format. It is obvious that the plenary session “united” different continents – Africa (speaker Dr. Angela James from Republic of South Africa), Latin America (Dr. Solange Locatelli from Brazil), Europe (Dr. Martin Bilek from Czech Republic, Dr. Malgorzata Nodzynska-Moron from Poland, and Dr. Rita Birzina from Latvia). All plenary reports in their own way were interesting and relevant. Prof. M. Nodzynska-Moron’s report was dedicated to non-formal natural science education realities. Various practical examples were presented, non-formal natural science education experiences were analysed. Prof. M. Bilek analysed chemistry didactics issues in his report. A special attention was paid to virtual chemistry experiments, as well as to experiments using computer tools. Prof. A. James discussed the implementation of STEM programme while working with primary school teachers. Preparation and practical implementation aspects of such programme were analysed, concrete educational experiences were presented. In the first section, the reports were mainly devoted to the problems of pre-school, primary and general natural science education. A total of 9 reports were presented. In the second section, issues of natural science and technological education in gymnasium and in higher education institutions were discussed. A total of 10 reports were presented. It is interesting that in the second section, three reports of foreign researchers were presented. The topics of the research were diverse, basically various areas of natural science and technological education were discussed. It is important that the participants were active, intense discussions and sharing of experiences took place. The results of the ongoing international project “Bridge2Teach” were presented at the conference. More information about this project can be found on the project website (https://www.bridge2teach-project.eu). Various natural science education topics were presented in other reports. On the second day of the conference, a seminar was held for natural science teachers “Integrated science education in Lithuania: achievements and future perspectives” (The project is funded by the Lithuanian Science Council No. P-REP-21-8). Insights, recommendations, and conclusions of the research. Most conference reports were presented in the form of articles and published in the conference proceedings. The article presents the analysis of emotive metaphors used by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov in the genres of interview and press conference in 2023. The research is a continuation of an earlier similar study based on the materials of 2022. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that these genres of diplomatic discourse, combining the properties of status-role and relatively personal communication, allow us to identify the aspects of the use of emotive figurative means in achieving the main goal of diplomacy – in approving the course of the country’s foreign policy in the context of a consistent escalation of the “hybrid” (including informational) war of the “collective West” against the Russian Federation in 2023. The purpose of the study is to identify the functional aspects of emotive transfers used by S. V. Lavrov in the studied texts in the dynamic aspect (in comparison with similar transfers in 2022). The research is based on 46 transcripts of the two genres, published from 01.01.23 to 06.06.23 on the official website mid.ru (mid.ru/ru/press_service/minister_speeches). Based on the complex methodology of semantic, discursive, linguocognitive analysis, it was found that in 2023, as in 2022, the Minister regularly uses emotive metaphors in order to draw attention to the most acute and significant, from the state point of view, problems of international relations (escalation of tension in the world, “hybrid” war against Russia, the main source of which is the aggressive policy of the “collective” West”), as well as to express the attitude towards them (in status-role and personal aspects). To solve these problems, S. V. Lavrov not only continues to systematically use reduced, ”undiplomatic” hyphenations (“vulgarisms”), but also more actively attracts bookoriented (“rhetorical”) metaphors. The cognitive and pragmatic functions of emotive metaphorics are most fully realized, as in 2022, in a system of conceptual models, the composition, structure of which and the main trends in development in 2023 are directly related to the solution of topical political and ideological problems.

Practitioners in many domains–e.g., clinical psychologists, college instructors, researchers–collect written responses from clients. A well-developed method that has been applied to texts from sources like these is the computer application Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC). LIWC uses the words in texts as cues to a person’s thought processes, emotional states, intentions, and motivations. In the present study, we adopt analytic principles from LIWC and develop and test an alternative method of text analysis using naïve Bayes methods. We further show how output from the naïve Bayes analysis can be used for mark up of student work in order to provide immediate, constructive feedback to students and instructors. References Blei, D. The CWR, a subsidiaryof the International Religious Foundation (IRF) did everything possible tomake the conference a very rewarding experience for all participants.Unlike other conferences, only major assumptions and conclusions werepresented by the authors to set the stage for discussion. To facilitate thediscussions, the organizers had distributed papers a month ahead of time.A certain "pairing" was also attempted, but this was by no means exclusive, and a major part of the proceedings consisted of free-range discussions.punctuated by the Grand Mufti of Syria and his stories on topics rangingfrom camels to watermelons. reflecting on interconnections, between andrelative importance of particular situations.Since the CWR plans to publish, in full or in part, contributions to thisconference, and since these tend to be well documented and meaty. we willonly provide here an idea of the flavor and scope of the topics and discussions.Mohsin Labban of Alexandria, Egypt was the first to discuss the spiritualand moral aspects of the Shari'ah concluding that a woman's fulfilment isin her inclination to possess. Digitalization in the construction industry is increasingly striving to create digital twins in order to continuously exploit optimization potential in the management and utilization of existing buildings. Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based as-is or as-built documentation represents a promising basis in this context, which requires creating a geometric model for example based on point clouds as well as semantic enrichment in a Scan-to-BIM workflow. Conventionally, this is carried out manually by specialists on 2D screens and often is time-consuming and costly. The project "Building Inspector XR" addresses these issues and presents an intuitive solution for BIM-based as-is/as-built documentation using X-Reality (XR). In Virtual Reality (VR), BIM models are created off-site from point clouds and then are verified in Mixed Reality (MR) on-site. By integrating (partially) automated methods and targeting user-friendliness in our solution, Scan-to-BIM can be realized more efficiently and intuitively. In this paper, the focus lies on the innovative aspects of our XR application which encompass VR and MR environments, automation support, modeling schemes in compliance with BIM standards, and the registration of models in reality for MR. Twitter geolocation is useful for various purposes, including tracking COVID-19 perceptions, analyzing political trends, and managing natural disasters. However, accurately predicting geolocations based on tweet content remains a challenge. In the past, machine learning approaches have tried to solve this problem by training prediction models on previously seen data, but these models often struggle to generalize to unseen places. To overcome these limitations, in this work we present a framework based on Natural Language Processing (NLP), Knowledge Graphs (KG), and Semantic Web to find geographical entities on tweets’ content. KG facilitate the extraction of structured knowledge of texts in order to study their semantic analysis based on NLP techniques to search associated geographical coordinates to the entities of that KG; if there is explicit mention of places in the tweet, the Semantic Web is used to find geographical information associated with the entities present in the tweets’ content. To evaluate the precision of the prediction algorithm, we compare our predicted latitude and longitude coordinates with AlbertaT6 floods dataset. Our results show an F1 score up to 0.851 within a 10 kilometer radius.

Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) aims to design effective systems for the analysis of learners’ production in a target language ensuring both successful learning and motivated learners. Most of the existing systems, however, focus extensively on the form rather than on the meaning of language. To create effective systems facilitating personalized language learning both form and meaning should be considered. The reason behind this is that language is a continuous flow of information passing from one user or agent to another, both during comprehension and production. This becomes even more relevant in the case of second or foreign languages (L2), where certain linguistic choices may be dictated by inexact form-meaning links construed by the learner. In this research project, we focus on the analysis of the spoken production of adult learners of German, taking argument and information structure as a use case. We use Fluid Construction Grammar as a formalism, which captures relevant linguistic aspects at both the syntactic level (form) and the semantic level (meaning). Its particularity lies in the possibility of closely monitoring bidirectional form-meaning interactions starting from constructions of different nature modeled in an extensively customizable way. Our work is in progress, and we focus on ways to provide helpful feedback on meaning. German displays a rather articulated grammar and obtaining insights not only on its formal but also on its semantic correctness could offer important steps forward for Intelligent CALL. The design of computational systems for Intelligent CALL that can effectively support L2 learners in personalized learning requires a grammatical framework that is computationally effective and offers linguistic and acquisitional perspicuity (Schulze & Penner, 2008).

Measurement processes play a central role in the historical genesis of rational numbers. As a consequence, and even if the use and treatment of fractions differed among cultures, it is not surprising that this topic is already found in the oldest preserved mathematical texts. As expected, one of the fundamental aspects that was consistently covered by the authors throughout the history was related to the performance of the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) with fractions. In this context, many different approaches and presentations can be identified among different texts. During the 16th century, many textbooks with arithmetic content were published in Spain. They were written by authors with different profiles, and pursuing different goals. Hence, it makes sense to try to identify the possibly different ways in which these authors approached the treatment of fractions in their books. More particularly, in this work we consider the treatment of the four basic operations with fractions in arithmetic books published in Spain around the 16th century. We describe the very different treatments that we have identified according to the number of addressed cases, and their ordering and we discuss the differences according to variables such as the number of elements, or the type and nature of the objects involved in the operation. This allows us to compare the behavior of the different authors, and opens the question about the underlying motivations for their choices, and also about their possible sources and mutual influences.

A corpus is a large collection of machine-readable texts, ideally, that should be representative of a Language. Corpus plays an important role in several natural language processing (NLP) and linguistic research. The corpus development itself is a substantial contribution to the resource building of language processing. The corpora play an important role in linguistic study as well as in several NLP tasks like Part-Of-Speech (POS) tagging, Parsing, Semantic tagging, in the parallel corpora, etc. There are numerous corpora in the literature of different languages and most of them are created for a specific purpose. Hence it is obvious that a researcher cannot use any corpus for their particular task. This paper also focuses on an automated technique to create a COVID-19 corpus dedicated to the research in linguistic aspects because of the pandemic situation.

This paper presents a semantic analysis of the most language-specific Russian word for ‘sadness’, namely, toska. The analysis is based on the hypothesis that one may regard translation equivalents and paraphrases of a linguistic unit extracted from real translated texts as a source of information about its semantics. The appearance of language-specific words in translated texts may be even more useful for studying their semantics. It turns out that тоска is not all that rare in Russian translated texts. The study of the incentives that lead Russian translators to use the word тоска often reveals important aspects of the semantics of this word. Stimuli for the appearance of toska in translations into Russian vary greatly. In general, when the original describes some bad feelings, the word toska appears if the original speaks of a subject’s unsatisfied desire, which desire may be vague and not well understood an
