This chapter gives an overview of approaches used to understand the generation of electroencephalographic (EEG) signals using computational models. The basic concept is that appropriate modeling of neuronal networks, based on relevant anatomical and physiological data, allows researchers to test hypotheses about the nature of EEG signals. Here these models are considered at different levels of complexity. The first level is based on single cell biophysical properties anchored in classic Hodgkin-Huxley theory. The second level emphasizes on detailed neuronal networks and their role in generating different kinds of EEG oscillations. At the third level are models derived from the Wilson-Cowan approach, which constitutes the backbone of neural mass models. Another part of the chapter is dedicated to models of epileptiform activities. Finally, the themes of nonlinear dynamic systems and topological models in EEG generation are discussed.

This article gives an introduction to state-of-the-art text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis systems, showing both the natural language processing and the digital signal processing problems involved. Text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis is the art of designing talking machines. The article begins with brief user-oriented description of a general TTS system and comments on its commercial applications. It then gives a functional diagram of a modern TTS system, highlighting its components. It describes its morphosyntactic module. Furthermore, it examines why sentence-level phonetization cannot be achieved by a sequence of dictionary look-ups, and describes possible implementations of the phonetizer. Finally, the article describes prosody generation, outlining how intonation and duration can approximately be computed from text. Prosody refers to certain properties of the speech signal, which are related to audible changes in pitch, loudness, and syllable length. This article also introduces the two main existing categories of techniques for waveform generation: synthesis by rule and concatenative synthesis.

Evoked potentials (EPs) occur in the peripheral and the central nervous system. The low amplitude signals are extracted from noise by averaging multiple time epochs time-locked to a sensory stimulus. The mechanisms of generation, the techniques for stimulation and recording are established. Clinical applications provide robust information to various questions. The importance of EPs is to measure precisely the conduction times within the stimulated sensory system. Visual evoked potentials to a pattern reversal checker board stimulus are commonly used to evaluate the optic nerve. Auditory evoked potentials following ‘click’ stimuli delivered by a headset are most often used to test the auditory nerve and for prognostication in comatose patients. Somatosensory evoked potentials to electrical stimulation of distal nerves evaluate the peripheral nerve and the lemniscal system, and have various indications from demyelinating diseases to the monitoring of operations and prognosis of comatose patients.

Dirzu, Dan, Ovidiu Palea und Sarah Choxi. Postoperative Abdominal Wall Pain. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190271787.003.0028.

Annotation:
Abdominal pain accounts for almost 1.5% of office visits and nearly 5% of emergency department admissions each year in the United States. In 2% to 3% of patients with chronic abdominal pain, the pain arises from the abdominal wall. Postoperative abdominal wall pain is chronic, unremitting pain unaffected by eating or bowel function but exacerbated by postural change. A localized, tender trigger point can be identified, although pain may radiate over a diffuse area of the abdomen. Thorough history and physical examination can distinguish abdominal wall pain from visceral intra-abdominal pain. A positive Carnett’s sign favors an abdominal wall pain generator and not a visceral source. Injection with a local anesthetic and steroid at the area of pain may provide relief and can function also as a diagnostic test for abdominal wall pain. Refractory pain may be treated with chemical neurolysis, radiofrequency ablation, peripheral nerve stimulators, or neurectomy.
