Ternary quantum dots (QDs) are novel nanomaterials that can be used in chemical analysis due their unique physicochemical and spectroscopic properties. These properties are size-dependent and can be adjusted in the synthetic protocol modifying the reaction medium, time, source of heat, and the ligand used for stabilization. In the last decade, several spectroscopic methods have been developed for the analysis of organic and inorganic analytes in biological, drug, environmental, and food samples, in which different sensing schemes have been applied using ternary quantum dots. This review addresses the different synthetic approaches of ternary quantum dots, the sensing mechanisms involved in the analyte detection, and the predominant areas in which these nanomaterials are used.

Abstract Semiconductor nanomaterials, also known as quantum dots (QDs), have gained significant interest due to their outstanding optical properties with potential biological and biomedical applications. However, the presence of heavy toxic metals such as Cd, Pb, and Hg in conventional QDs have been a major challenge in their applications. Therefore, it is imperative to seek a viable alternative that will be non-toxic and have similar optical properties as the conventional QDs. Ternary I–III–VI QDs have been found to be suitable alternatives. Their optical properties are tunable and have emissions in the near-infrared region. These properties make them useful in a wide range of biological applications. Hence, this review focuses on the recent progress in the use of ternary QDs in Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET), nanomedical applications such as drug and gene delivery. It also discusses the biophotonic application of ternary I–III–VI QDs in optical imaging, biosensing, and multimodal imaging. Furthermore, we looked at the pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of these QDs, and their toxicity concerns. Finally, we looked at the current status, challenges, and future directions in the application of these ternary QDs.

In this report, we present the optical properties of the biosensors fabricated from CdZnSe/ZnS quantum dots. The optical properties such as absorption and emission of the ternary quantum dots before and after coupling with the protein molecules like streptavidine (SA) and acetylcholinesterase enzymes (AChE), to form a biosensor structure, will be presented. In particular, the changes in luminescence intensity according to the pH value of the solution environment containing biosensor have been considered, before and after the presence of pesticides. The changes in luminescence intensity of the biosensor after the presence of pesticide over time from 2 seconds to 26 minutes were also surveyed. We have been carried out the tests to determine the trace amounts of commercial pesticides like Motox 5EC, containing 5% cypermethrin and Tungatin 10 EC, containing 10% abamectin, on the real samples of tealeaves. Some characteristics of the relationship between composition, structure, and special optical properties of ternary alloy quantum dots will also be presented. These studies open up the potential applications of ternary quantum dots for agricultural production.

Herein, we synthesized BiOBr/ultrathin g-C3N4/ternary heterostructures modified with black phosphorous quantum dots using a simple water bath heating and sonication method. The ternary heterostructure was then used for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline in visible light, with an efficiency as high as 92% after 3 h of irradiation. Thus, the photodegradation efficiency is greatly improved compared to that of ultrathin g-C3N4, BiOBr, and black phosphorous quantum dots alone. The synthesized ternary heterostructure improves the charge separation efficiency, thus increasing the photodegradation efficiency. This work provides a new and efficient method for the degradation of antibiotics in the environment.

Ternary chalcogenide Ag-In quantum dots (QDs) are more environmentally friendly than known Cd-, Pb- and P-containing nanoparticles. Here we review the literature on colloidal synthesis methods, properties, and promising fields for the application of AgInS2 quantum dots. Similar to the QDs of lead and cadmium chalcogenides, the most accurate control over the structure and morphology of AgInS2 QDs is achieved by using the method of introducing precursors into high-boiling organic solvents. However, to realize the potential applications of ternary quantum dots, in particular as luminescent biomarkers, the quantum dots must be soluble in polar solvents, especially water. The transfer of quantum dots into aqueous solutions is usually accomplished by exchanging primary lyophilic ligands with smaller bifunctional molecules, such as thioglycolic (or mercaptopropionic) acids, which can passivate the surface of the quantum dots while making them soluble in the polar environment. Methods of colloidal synthesis of AgInS2 / ZnS quantum dots can be classified into the following types: Injection of ions into a high-boiling solvent Synthesis in a mixture of solvents Synthesis in the aquatic environment Methods for the synthesis of AgInS2 QDs in both aqueous solution and organic solvent medium are described. Examples of application of quantum dots for biomedical purposes and in photovoltaic and sensory devices are given. Quantum dots have high photostability and brightness, are characterized by a wide range of absorption and narrow spectral bands of radiation, ie meet most of the criteria for fluorescent materials and biosensors for imaging cancer cells in antitumor therapy, immunofluorescent labeling of proteins, detection of toxins s, visualize intracellular structures, etc. Quantum dots of tertiary chalcogenides, in particular CuInS2 and AgInS2, may be an alternative to quantum dots of binary lead and cadmium chalcogenides for use in light-emitting and light-absorbing systems, such as LEDs, sensors and solar absorbers.

Quantum dots of I–III–VI ternary compounds exhibit unusual photophysical properties and technological utility, which attract attention and have been intensely investigated. CuInSe2 quantum dots are an environmentally friendly composition, a direct transition, and an adjustable bandgap. Here, we discuss the influence of the Cu/In molar ratio of CuInSe2 quantum dots on Cu-related defects and photo-physical properties, and CuInSe2 quantum dots are synthesized by a green, safe, and low-temperature method in triethylene glycol. The proportion of the +1 and +2 oxidation states of Cu in the quantum dots will change with the Cu/In molar atomic ratio. The +1-oxidation state of Cu will prolong the carrier recombination lifetime and provide favorable conditions for the transfer and collection of carriers. By adjusting for different defect types, we can better apply CISe quantum dots in devices and other fields.

This paper is focused on the formation and recovery of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles in two different types of polycation-modified reverse microemulsions using low molecular weight poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI). Both polymers were incorporated in a quaternary w/o microemulsion consisting of water, toluene-pentanol (1 : 1), and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), as well as in a ternary w/o microemulsion consisting of water, heptanol, and 3-(N,N-dimethyl-dodecylammonio)-propanesulfonate (SB). UV-vis and fluorescence measurements in the microemulsion illustrate the capping effect of the polycations on the formation of the CdS quantum dots. The nanoparticles are redispersed in water and characterized by using UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, in combination with dynamic light scattering. From the quaternary microemulsion, only nanoparticle aggregates of about 100 nm can be redispersed, but, from the ternary microemulsion, well-stabilized polycation-capped CdS quantum dots can be obtained. The results show that the electrostatic interactions between the polycation and the surfactant are of high relevance especially in the solvent evaporation and redispersion process. That means only that in the case of moderate polycation-surfactant interactions a redispersion of the polymer-capped CdS quantum dots without problems of aggregation is possible.

The synthesis of alloyed semiconductor quantum dots has produced structures that have distinct properties in comparison with both their bulk counterparts and their parent binary semiconductor quantum dots. In this work, the quantum confined structures of a ternary alloy of CdSe1−xSx were synthesized by one-pot synthesis method in an aqueous medium at a low temperature and capped with 3-mercaptopropoionic acid. Structures of the synthesized quantum dots were investigated by energy dispersive X-ray, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The obtained quantum dots had modified cubic structures as proven by X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. The optical properties of the synthesized quantum dots were characterized by optical absorption, photoluminescence, and color analysis. Optical absorption investigation revealed a widening of the band gap of CdSe1−xSx with increasing S content. This widening increased for the samples suspended in water relative to the samples measured in powder form due to the difference in the environment of the two cases. The size determined from the optical absorption measurements was found to be compatible with the sizes obtained from the X-ray diffraction with the value of bowing parameter around 1, which indicated a graded diffusion of sulfur. It was also ascertained that the emission of different compositions covered the most visible range with a small full width at half maximum. The x and y values of the chromaticity coordinates decreased with increasing sulfur content of up to 15%, while the z value increased.

Strategies are discussed to distinguish interdiffusion and segregation and to measure key parameters such as diffusivities and segregation lengths in semiconductor quantum dots and quantum wells by electron microscopy methods. Spectroscopic methods are usually necessary when the materials systems are complex while imaging methods may suffice for binary or simple ternary compounds where atomic intermixing is restricted to one type of sub-lattice. The emphasis on methodology should assist microscopists in evaluating and quantifying signals from electron micrographs and related spectroscopic data. Examples presented include CdS/ZnS core/shell particles and SiGe, InGaAs and InGaN quantum wells.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs) are two classifications of environmental pollutants that have become a source of health concerns. As a result, there have been several efforts towards the development of analytical methods that are efficient and affordable that can sense these pollutants. In recent decades, a wide range of techniques has been developed for the detection of pollutants present in the environment. Among these different techniques, the use of semiconductor nanomaterials, also known as quantum dots, has continued to gain more attention in sensing because of the optical properties that make them useful in the identification and differentiation of pollutants in water bodies. Reported studies have shown great improvement in the sensing of these pollutants. This review article starts with an introduction on two types of organic pollutants, namely polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-aromatic explosives. This is then followed by different quantum dots used in sensing applications. Then, a detailed discussion on different groups of quantum dots, such as carbon-based quantum dots, binary and ternary quantum dots and quantum dot composites, and their application in the sensing of organic pollutants is presented. Different studies on the comparison of water-soluble quantum dots and organic-soluble quantum dots of a fluorescence sensing mechanism are reviewed. Then, different approaches on the improvement of their sensitivity and selectivity in addition to challenges associated with some of these approaches are also discussed. The review is concluded by looking at different mechanisms in the sensing of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-aromatic compounds.

Ternary alloyed Cd0.7Zn0.3Te colloidal quantum dots were synthesized under open atmosphere conditions. The Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dots were characterized under XRD studies, DLS technique and optical absorption measurements. Using tauc and urbach relation the optical energy bandgap and urbach energy were obtained. The intensity depended nonlinear optical parameters of Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dots were determined with Z-scan experimental setup using a green laser source working on continuous wave mode. The nonlinear absorption coefficient β, along with optical limiting capacity of Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dot is investigated through the open aperture set up. The transmittance of Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dot showed a sharp dip at the maximum intensity point of the laser which indicates reverse saturable absorption. The optical limiting threshold value for Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dot was obtained around 4.6 KJ/cm2. The nonlinear refractive index of Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dot is find out using closed aperture set up. The nonlinear refractive index with a negative sign was obtained for the Cd0.7Zn0.3Te quantum dot which is attributed to the self-defocusing phenomena. The nonlinear studies indicate that the sample exhibits good nonlinear properties and find applications in optical limiting materials.

Ternary quantum dots (QDs) are very promising nanomaterials with a range of potential applications in photovoltaics, light-emitting devices, and biomedicine. Despite quite intensive studies of ternary QDs over the last years, the specific relaxation channels involved in their emission mechanisms are still poorly understood, particularly in the corresponding core-shell nanostructures. In the present work, we have studied the recombination pathways of AgInS2 QDs stabilized with the ZnAgInS alloy layer and the ZnS shell (AIS/ZAIS/ZnS QDs) using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. We have also investigated FRET in complexes of AIS/ZAIS/ZnS QDs and cyanine dyes with the absorption bands overlapping in the different regions of the QD emission spectrum, which allowed us to selectively quench the radiative transitions of the QDs. Our studies have demonstrated that FRET from QDs to dyes results in decreasing of all QD PL decay components with the shortest lifetime decreasing the most and the longest one decreasing the least. This research presents important approaches for the investigation of ternary QD luminescence mechanisms by the selective quenching of recombination pathways. These studies are also essential for potential applications of ternary QDs in photodynamic therapy, multiplex analysis, and time-resolved FRET sensing.
