A single event can generate asynchronous sensory cues due to variable encoding, transmission, and processing delays. To be interpreted as being associated in time, these cues must occur within a limited time window, referred to as a “temporal binding window” (TBW). We investigated the hypothesis that vestibular deficits could disrupt temporal visual-vestibular integration by determining the relationships between vestibular threshold and TBW in participants with normal vestibular function and with vestibular hypofunction. Vestibular perceptual thresholds to yaw rotation were characterized and compared with the TBWs obtained from participants who judged whether a suprathreshold rotation occurred before or after a brief visual stimulus. Vestibular thresholds ranged from 0.7 to 16.5 deg/s and TBWs ranged from 13.8 to 395 ms. Among all participants, TBW and vestibular thresholds were well correlated ( R2 = 0.674, P < 0.001), with vestibular-deficient patients having higher thresholds and wider TBWs. Participants reported that the rotation onset needed to lead the light flash by an average of 80 ms for the visual and vestibular cues to be perceived as occurring simultaneously. The wide TBWs in vestibular-deficient participants compared with normal functioning participants indicate that peripheral sensory loss can lead to abnormal multisensory integration. A reduced ability to temporally combine sensory cues appropriately may provide a novel explanation for some symptoms reported by patients with vestibular deficits. Even among normal functioning participants, a high correlation between TBW and vestibular thresholds was observed, suggesting that these perceptual measurements are sensitive to small differences in vestibular function. NEW & NOTEWORTHY While spatial visual-vestibular integration has been well characterized, the temporal integration of these cues is not well understood. The relationship between sensitivity to whole body rotation and duration of the temporal window of visual-vestibular integration was examined using psychophysical techniques. These parameters were highly correlated for those with normal vestibular function and for patients with vestibular hypofunction. Reduced temporal integration performance in patients with vestibular hypofunction may explain some symptoms associated with vestibular loss.

Abstract Previous studies have shown that activity engagement is related to cognitive function. However, few studies have examined the temporal order between activity engagement and various domains of cognition. Using data from the Virginia Cognitive Aging Project (baseline N =5430, Mage =51.28, SD =18.12), we examined the temporal relationships between engagement in physical and cognitive activity and different cognitive domains (reasoning, spatial visualization, episodic memory, processing speed, vocabulary) after controlling for age, education, self-rated health and depression. Cross-lagged panel analyses indicate that very few of the temporal relationships between activity level and cognition were significant except higher levels of cognitive activity significantly predicted better future processing speed, but not the reverse. Findings suggest the importance of engaging in cognitively stimulating activities, which help adults preserve processing speed over time. This study also highlights the importance of longitudinal design on various domains of cognition to help develop domain-specific interventions.

Identifying keyword associations from text and search sources is often used to facilitate many tasks such as understanding relationships among concepts, extracting relevant documents, matching advertisements to web pages, expanding user queries, etc. However, these keyword associations change continually change with time. In this paper, the authors define an equivalence relationship among keywords and develop methods to construct a temporal view of the equivalence relationship by constructing optimal temporal equivalence partitionings for keyword sets. They describe efficient algorithms to construct an optimal temporal equivalence partitioning for a keyword pair. They use the fact that the equivalence relationship is transitive to extend these algorithms to obtain an optimal temporal equivalence partitioning for a larger set of keywords. The authors show the effectiveness of the approach by constructing the temporal equivalence partitionings of several sets of keywords from the Multi-Domain Sentiment data set and the ICWS2009 Spinn3r data set.

Abstract We used experimental and descriptive functional analyses and lag sequential analyses to examine the functional and temporal relationship among the self-injurious (SIB), potentially injurious, repetitive, challenging, and pragmatic communicative behaviors of 6 children with intellectual disabilities. Functional analyses revealed social function for SIB, potentially injurious, and repetitive behaviors across 5, 4, and 5 participants, respectively. Sixteen functionally equivalent response classes were identified across participants using both experimental and naturalistic observation data. Repetitive, potentially injurious, and SIB behaviors were significantly temporally associated, and pragmatic communicative behaviors were strongly temporally associated with challenging behaviors. The importance of the temporal and functional relationship between imperative communicative acts and challenging behavior is discussed.

Temporal dynamics in business-to-business (B2B) relationships are the evolution of B2B relationship stages. This study offers new insights in examining the impact of the temporal dynamics on firm performance during the B2B relationship stages. Drawing on B2B stage models, social exchange theory and the evolution of trust, the results show that the link between trust and firm performance weakens when a relationship between two parties reaches a particular stage. trust has a positive effect on firm performance in the same period; however, this positive effect decreases over time. Thus, the impact of trust on firm performance is insignificant in subsequent relationship stages in the start-up context. The impact of trust on firm performance is unstable and decreases over time. This study offers new theoretical and managerial insights regarding the temporal dynamics in B2B relationships.

Abstract The weather radar is an efficient alternative for measuring spatially varying rainfall covering a large area at a high temporal resolution. This paper studies the impact of rainfall gauge temporal resolution on optimal relationships between radar reflectivity (Z) and rainfall rate (R). Four datasets of radar reflectivity and corresponding rain gauge rainfall data from Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, and one dataset from Bangkok, Thailand, were used in the analysis. Climatological Z–R relationships were calibrated using rainfall aggregated over 1–24 h to investigate the evidence of temporal scaling in the Z–R calibrated parameters. This analysis points to an increase in the multiplicative term (the A parameter) of the Z–R relationship as temporal resolutions become finer. This pattern is repeated in all the datasets analyzed. Thereafter, a simple scaling hypothesis was proposed to develop transformations that could scale the A parameter in the Z–R relation across a range of temporal resolutions. This scaling relationship was found to be suitable, with the scaling exponent attaining values close to 0.055 across all the datasets analyzed. The proposed relationship has a significant role in radar rainfall estimation studies, especially in regions where subdaily gauge rainfall measurements are not readily available to ascertain optimal Z–R parameters.

The relationship between spatial and temporal patterns of dynamical behavior is studied in the nonequilibrium, extended homogeneous system. We present an example of "anomalous" relationship between spatial and temporal patterns of behavior and discuss possible mechanisms of this phenomenon. By anomalous relationship we mean a situation when only chaotic temporal dynamics is possible in the spatially homogeneous regime, while in the spatially inhomogeneous regime temporal dynamics can be regular at the same value of parameters. We studied this phenomenon in the array of identical coupled Chua's circuits.

AbstractA long-time direct numerical simulation (DNS) based on the lattice Boltzmann method is carried out for grid turbulence with the view to compare spatially averaged statistical properties in planes perpendicular to the mean flow with their temporal counterparts. The results show that the two averages become equal a short distance downstream of the grid. This equality indicates that the flow has become homogeneous in a plane perpendicular to the mean flow. This is an important result, since it confirms that hot-wire measurements are appropriate for testing theoretical results based on spatially averaged statistics. It is equally important in the context of DNS of grid turbulence, since it justifies the use of spatial averaging along a lateral direction and over several realizations for determining various statistical properties. Finally, the very good agreement between temporal and spatial averages validates the comparison between temporal (experiments) and spatial (DNS) statistical properties. The results are also interesting because, since the flow is stationary in time and spatially homogeneous along lateral directions, the equality between the two types of averaging provides strong support for the ergodic hypothesis in grid turbulence in planes perpendicular to the mean flow.
