The relevance of addressing the problem of the collective subject is due to the need to study the laws of complex self-developing human-dimensional systems. In these systems, the subjects of knowledge and activity are organically connected with the means of knowledge and activity and objects. Self-development is realized in these systems through the information and communication technology environment. Self-development is carried out with the help of the reflexive activity of the collective subject. The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the collective subject in complex human-dimensional systems. It is shown that the characteristics of the collective subject are influenced by such trends as the intellectualization of the technosphere and the technologization of human cognition and activity. The functions of a collective subject in the information society are beginning to be performed by information management systems. The collective subject under the conditions of the co-evolution of man and technology evolves in the direction of a hybrid collective subject.

Abstract Ecosocialist technology is technology guided by universal human need and by concern for the health of the natural environment. It contrasts with capitalist technology, which is driven above all by the imperatives of cost-reduction and profit-maximization within a market whose contours are shaped by the owners or state agents of capital. The contrast between ecosocialist and capitalist technology appears across all sectors of production and services. Following a theoretical overview, we examine the sectors of transport, housing, and food production and reflect on the newest technologies of communication, surveillance, and artificial intelligence. I argue that devices and infrastructures that would transform the conditions of life should in all cases be subject, at the planning stage, to full disclosure, informed public debate, and democratic resolution.

A technology to study the sensitivity of impact responses to prescribed test conditions is presented. Motor vehicle impacts are used to illustrate the principles of this sensitivity technology. Impact conditions are regulated by specifying either a corridor for the acceleration time history or other test parameters such as velocity change, static crush distance, and pulse duration. By combining a time domain constrained optimization method and a multirigid body dynamics simulator, the upper and lower bounds of occupant responses subject to the regulated corridors were obtained. It was found that these prescribed corridors may be either so wide as to allow extreme variations in occupant response or so narrow that they are physically unrealizable in the laboratory test environment. A new corridor based on specifications for the test parameters of acceleration, velocity. crush distance, and duration for frontal vehicle impacts is given.

Provision of quality of engineering education upon implementation of international CDIO initiative (Conceive – Design – Implement – Operate) results in implementation of new education technologies, in particular: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). Its implementation allows to solve a set of educational issues concerning motivation of students from the first day by using integrated practically oriented assignments, step-by-step immersion into designing activity. Interdisciplinarity and integration, inherent in the STEM technology, assume moving out of a teacher as a holder of educational situation from his disciplinary area, would demand to be a co-participant of a student activity, his initiative in solving creative tasks. Successful realization of STEM technology depends significantly on new competences of teachers and managers, their capabilities to significant modifications of their occupational activity. Difficulty of implementation of STEM technology is related with unpreparedness of teachers and managers. This work is aimed at substantiation of necessary conditions providing readiness of managers, teachers, and students to implement the STEM technologies characterized as a collective subject. The experimental results serve as theoretical substantiation of the concept of formation of collective subjects (managers, teachers, students), determination of new functionality of managers, teachers, students, stepping of this process to provide implementation of STEM technology. Abstract Primary and secondary clarifiers seldom operate with constant hydraulic and solids loading; in many plants there are significant diurnal variations in flows and solids loads. Secondary clarifiers are subject to density currents due to the relatively high concentrations of suspended solids in the influent. In this study a computer program for unsteady flow in a centre-fed circular clarifier was used to predict the effects of unsteady flow on the clarifier performance. Two cases were considered, namely: diurnal variation in flow at a constant MLSS concentration and a sudden increase in the MLSS. In both cases, the results of the model simulations indicated that clarifier performance is significantly affected by the unsteadiness of the flow; a steady state analysis at the peak flow gave lower effluent concentrations than either the diurnal flow or the step increase in the MLSS. The model simulations suggested that this effect was greater for peripheral weirs than in-board launders.

The effectiveness of training is determined by many factors. Among them, more and more attention is paid to the compliance of the content of training with individual characteristics and needs of students. The thesis that a student should be the subject of their own learning finally gets a real embodiment. The article discusses aspects of a personalized approach to teaching related to changes in the teacher's activity. In the context of personalization, the educational process is designed and implemented in such a way that the student acts as a subject of educational activity. The article discusses the principles, conditions, forms and methods of work necessary for personalization. There are always two sides involved in the educational process – the teacher and the student. The student will achieve better results if the training activity is comfortable for him in terms of psychological and pedagogical conditions. The role of the teacher in these conditions changes from informational and disciplining to organizational, coordination, and consulting. In other ways, several tasks are set and implemented: (1) selecting the content and methods of teaching; (2) organizing interaction with students; (3) the teacher's perception of students' learning activities. The article discusses the requirements for the selection of educational content: training should have a personal meaning and an individualized standard; educational material should stimulate the development of reflection on students' own experience; students in the process of working with educational content should be able to formulate their own goals; educational content should be designed in such a way as to stimulate the endless process of learning among students. Special attention is paid to the construction of the training content. As one of the bases for personalization of training, the article considers the technology of designing and solving web quests. Web quest is a research activity that allows students to gain new knowledge and expand their understanding of the issue being studied. The results of using this technology in teaching master's degree students during distance learning are discussed.

This article contextualises the body in cyberspace, using the specific examples of the performative body and the social networking site Facebook. Technology is established as a process which continually unfolds and illuminates new understandings of subjectivity, unfurling in parallel with the performative body – and gendered identities – that Judith Butler articulates. Here, the author conducts a close analysis of the technological affordances of Facebook as a site that fosters the construction of a phantasmic, performative subject that Butler describes. This argument relies on an understanding of technology and the body as having their meaning dynamically constituted through mutual interconnection – an understanding of interface that is taken from the theoretical work of Donna Haraway and Vicki Kirby. The purpose of seeking out the performative body in cyberspace is to explore the possibility of technologically-derived, subversive bodies. This is done by examining the emergence of pleasure in human engagement with technology. This pleasure suggests that subjects are enticed by the creative possibilities which technology offers, as it leads to regenerations that, under the right conditions, yield subversive bodies.

The purpose (objective) of the empirical study is the measurement of the accuracy of expert-proctors in detecting cheating in online testing. Sample of the study. 35 test takers passed an online test of general knowledge on the basis of 30 multiple choice questions. Half of the subjects (18 persons) were “artificial cheaters” — they used cheat sheets with correct answers. Methods. The video recording of the testing process included a “screen capture” so that expert-proctors could observe all cursor movements, see a recording of the subject’s facial expressions and a visual focus of attention in a separate window (recording from the front camera), and could listen to the subject pronouncing the task conditions and answers (“oral decision”). 14 experts took part in rating of video recordings, of which 8 experts showed satisfactory results in terms of the level of accuracy in detecting cheating (their accuracy that was measured using the Kappa coefficient was higher than 0.5). Conclusions. A high asymmetric validity of expert assessments is revealed. More accurate experts allowed a negligible (about 5 percent) number of errors of the “false alarm” type, but a relatively large number of errors of the “skip” type. Recommendations are made for the practical use of the expert assessment method in combination with automatic chronometric analysis of the degree of atypical protocols and subsequent control of face-to-face offline testing of all suspected subjects (examinees).

The article discusses the situation with the subject and subjectivity that arises in the conditions of scientific and technological progress. The concept of the subject is introduced through the distinction between reflex (natural) and reflexive (artificial) processes of self-awareness, the subject is understood as a way of connecting “worlds” in the sense of K. R. Popper. The forms of reflection that create subjectivity are introduced as philosophical inventions in the sense of I. I. Lapshin as an aphorism, dialogue and system. The research methodology is of a general semiotic and neo-Kantian character: the function of subjectivity for artificial environments of human life is considered as a reflexive basis for constructing theories and carrying out technical activities, the performance of this function leads to a consistent transformation of nature due to the accumulation of artifacts in the sensually accessible physical world (the first artificial nature), in the rational world of logical-grammatical forms (the second artificial nature), in the world of reason or intellectual reflection (the third artificial nature). Based on the analysis of subjectivity in the first, second and third artificial nature, we conclude that the crisis of the subject and human subjectivity observed in the information society, expressed in the models of the subject-free objectivity of the technosphere or technological singularity is evidence of the exhaustion of the methodological resources of the subject’s analysis. The third artificial nature, i. e. a man-made technical environment that includes intellectual artifacts, autonomous intelligent agents of making socially significant decisions, needs a new philosophical invention that allows for self-awareness procedures. In the conclusion, the assumption is formulated that as such a new philosophical invention, the “environment” can be discussed that removes the “system” in the same sense in which the “system” removes the “dialogue”, and the latter – “aphorism”. Water flow and solute transport in the upper soil layers are processes which are of importance in many hydrological and agricultural applications. These processes are occurring in a medium which has a complex composition, since the soil is a product of both the geological formation history and various man-induced activities like agricultural development. In addition, the upper soil is subject to cyclic variations in water content in response to the variable exposure of rainfall and outer evapotranspiration demand. The paper describes simulations of the field conditions at different points within two research fields where comprehensive field investigations have been carried out. The simulations are based on solutions to the partial differential flow equation, subject to the measured climatic conditions and the hydraulic properties in the individual soil columns. The simulations of water content and capillary pressure are compared with measurements.

In experiments, researchers commonly allocate subjects randomly and equally to the different treatment conditions before the experiment starts. While this approach is intuitive, it means that new information gathered during the experiment is not utilized until after the experiment has ended. Based on methodological approaches from other scientific disciplines such as computer science and medicine, we suggest machine learning algorithms for subject allocation in experiments. Specifically, we discuss a Bayesian multi-armed bandit algorithm for randomized controlled trials and use Monte Carlo simulations to compare its efficiency with randomized controlled trials that have a fixed and balanced subject allocation. Our findings indicate that a randomized allocation based on Bayesian multi-armed bandits is more efficient and ethical in most settings. We develop recommendations for researchers and discuss the limitations of our approach.

ABSTRACT Introduction This research has resulted in a system of sensors and software for effectively adjusting prosthetic alignment with digital numeric control. We called this suite of technologies the Prosthesis Smart Alignment Tool (ProSAT) system. Materials and Methods The ProSAT system has three components: a prosthesis-embedded sensor, an alignment tool, and an Internet-connected alignment expert system application that utilizes machine learning to analyze prosthetic alignment. All components communicate via Bluetooth. Together, they provide for numerically controlled prosthesis alignment adjustment. The ProSAT components help diagnose and guide the correction of very subtle, difficult-to-see imbalances in dynamic gait. The sensor has been cross-validated against kinetic measurement in a gait laboratory, and bench testing was performed to validate the performance of the tool while adjusting a prosthetic socket based on machine learning analyses from the software application. Results The three-dimensional alignment of the prosthetic socket was measured pre- and postadjustment from two fiducial points marked on the anterior surface of the prosthetic socket. A coordinate measuring machine was used to derive an alignment angular offset from vertical for both conditions: pre- and postalignment conditions. Of interest is the difference in the angles between conditions. The ProSAT tool is only controlling the relative change made to the alignment, not an absolute position or orientation. Target alignments were calculated by the machine learning algorithm in the ProSAT software, based on input of kinetic data samples representing the precondition and where a real prosthetic misalignment condition was known a priori. Detected misalignments were converted by the software to a corrective adjustment in the prosthesis alignment being tested. We demonstrated that a user could successfully and quickly achieve target postalignment change within an average of 0.1°. Conclusions The accuracy of a prototype ProSAT system has been validated for controlled alignment changes by a prosthetist. Refinement of the ergonomic form and technical function of the hardware and clinical usability of the mobile software application are currently being completed with benchtop experiments in advance of further human subject testing of alignment efficiency, accuracy, and user experience.

Sleep medicine has been an expanding discipline during the last few decades. The prevalence of sleep disorders is increasing, and sleep centers are expanding in hospitals and in the private care environment to meet the demands. Sleep medicine has evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. However, the number of sleep centers and caregivers in this area is not sufficient. Many new methods for recording sleep and diagnosing sleep disorders have been developed. Many sleep disorders are chronic conditions and require continuous treatment and monitoring of therapy success. Cost-efficient technologies for the initial diagnosis and for follow-up monitoring of treatment are important. It is precisely here that telemedicine technologies can meet the demands of diagnosis and therapy follow-up studies. Wireless recording of sleep and related biosignals allows diagnostic tools and therapy follow-up to be widely and remotely available. Moreover, sleep research requires new technologies to investigate underlying mechanisms in the regulation of sleep in order to better understand the pathophysiology of sleep disorders. Home recording and non-obtrusive recording over extended periods of time with telemedicine methods support this research. Telemedicine allows recording with little subject interference under normal and experimental life conditions.

This paper describes a theoretical framework and initial experimental design for characterizing a travel replacement threshold. This effort begins with a use case of remote engineering maintenance training, conducted in three conditions: side-by-side (physically proximate), teleconference (using off-the-shelf software), and a custom VR/AR system designed to provide the apprentice with a virtual view of both the instructor’s larger scale lab and smaller scale workbench. The research hypotheses, experimental protocol, and dependent measures are described. The task involves an instructor demonstrating a circuit board troubleshooting task to a remote apprentice. The apprentice then completes the trained task independently, and performance and subject preferences are compared across conditions. The details of this paper, the result of extensive literature review and winnowing of variables, may assist researchers exploring CMC, training, or social communication.

There are various definitions of the concept of website that reflect the legal nature of the definition in question, depending on the circumstances of its use. It has been established that a website refers to a set of electronic documents (files), united under one address (domain name and (or) IP address). The authors come to the conclusion that, depending on the business model used by the subject of electronic commerce, websites can have both an informational and advertising character and contain the functionality of online stores, accepting and processing orders for goods and services online and, in many cases, performing them as well. With a certain degree of conventionality, one can say that in modern conditions the website acts as a representative of the person on the Internet. Therefore, the very first stage of its use — the stage of creating a website — is particularly important.

Despite the huge public investment for train technology and mayor rail infrastructure (e.g., tunnels), train safety is still a subject of concern. The work described herein reviews the state of the art on research related to critical velocity and backlayering conditions in tunnel fires. The review on backlayering conditions includes the effect of blockages, inclination, and the location of the fire source. The review herein focuses on experimental and theoretical research, although it excludes research studies using numerical modeling. Many studies have used scaled tunnel structures for experimental testing; nevertheless, there are various scaling challenges associated with these studies. For example, very little work has been done on flame length, fire source location, and the effect of more than one blockage, and how results on scaled experiments represent the behaviour at real-scale. The review sheds light on the current hazards associated with fires in rail tunnels.

The association between ICT diffusion and education is a subject of hot debate in both ICT and educational circles. Stances range from positive enthusiast, to skeptics, to disbelievers vis-a-vis the impact of ICT on students’ achievements. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the presence of any correlation between students’ academic achievements as recorded by Trends in International Mathematics and Science (TIMMS 2011) and the penetration of ICT in their schools and households, with focus primarily on computers and the Internet. The paper relies on the analysis of the data published by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS 2011), international study center and the international association for the evaluation of educational achievements. Statistical data analysis will be employed to figure out whether there is any correlation between the penetration level of ICT and the students’ score in math and science tests as recorded by the TIMMS 2011 international scale. The analysis conducted within the scope of this research indicates the lack of any association between ICT use and students achievements in math and science subjects. Though the linkage between students’ achievements is not a straightforward issue that can be uncovered via simple regression analysis, however, the results definitely indicate that employment of ICT in both schools and homes is an insignificant factor that can be easily offset by other major factors, like socio-economic conditions, instruction resources, teachers’ capabilities, or cultural factors.

A CrMoV high and intermediate-pressure (HP-IP) rotor exhibited in-service cracking in the blade groove walls. Cracks initiated from a notch and propagated under creep conditions to a depth of 0.255 in. (6.5 mm). Since the unit was base loaded, the contribution of cyclic loading (startups and shutdowns) was not significant. The total life of the groove walls is predicted by applying a life prediction approach that accounts for both crack initiation and propagation. Crack initiation life is based on short-term creep tests extrapolated to long times using a time-temperature parameter. Crack propagation time is estimated using a newly developed time-dependent fracture mechanics concept. A parameter Ct is used to express the crack growth rate under creep loading conditions. Pertinent material properties such as creep deformation and creep crack growth rate were obtained by testing the material from the subject rotor. The results obtained by this analysis show that about 50 percent of the estimated life was spent in crack propagation. Predicted service life time compares very favorably with the actual operating life of the rotor.

A novel delay-dependent stability criterion for Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with multiplicative noise is addressed in this paper subject to passivity performance. The general case of interval time-varying delay is considered for the practical control issue. For the criterion, an integral Lyapunov-Krasovskii function is proposed to derive some sufficient relaxed conditions and to avoid the derivative of the membership function. Moreover, a free-matrix inequality is adopted to deal with the delay terms such that the available derivative of time-varying delay is bigger than one. In order to employ a convex optimization algorithm to find the control gain, a projection lemma is applied to acquire the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) form of the sufficient conditions. With the obtained gains, a fuzzy controller is designed by the concept of Parallel Distributed Compensation (PDC) such that the delayed T-S fuzzy systems with multiplicative noise are asymptotically stable and passive in the mean square. Finally, a stabilization problem of the ship’s autopilot dynamic system and some comparisons are discussed during the simulation results.
