The relevance of addressing the problem of the collective subject is due to the need to study the laws of complex self-developing human-dimensional systems. In these systems, the subjects of knowledge and activity are organically connected with the means of knowledge and activity and objects. Self-development is realized in these systems through the information and communication technology environment. Self-development is carried out with the help of the reflexive activity of the collective subject. The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the collective subject in complex human-dimensional systems. It is shown that the characteristics of the collective subject are influenced by such trends as the intellectualization of the technosphere and the technologization of human cognition and activity. The functions of a collective subject in the information society are beginning to be performed by information management systems. The collective subject under the conditions of the co-evolution of man and technology evolves in the direction of a hybrid collective subject.

Abstract Ecosocialist technology is technology guided by universal human need and by concern for the health of the natural environment. It contrasts with capitalist technology, which is driven above all by the imperatives of cost-reduction and profit-maximization within a market whose contours are shaped by the owners or state agents of capital. The contrast between ecosocialist and capitalist technology appears across all sectors of production and services. Following a theoretical overview, we examine the sectors of transport, housing, and food production and reflect on the newest technologies of communication, surveillance, and artificial intelligence. I argue that devices and infrastructures that would transform the conditions of life should in all cases be subject, at the planning stage, to full disclosure, informed public debate, and democratic resolution.

A technology to study the sensitivity of impact responses to prescribed test conditions is presented. Motor vehicle impacts are used to illustrate the principles of this sensitivity technology. Impact conditions are regulated by specifying either a corridor for the acceleration time history or other test parameters such as velocity change, static crush distance, and pulse duration. By combining a time domain constrained optimization method and a multirigid body dynamics simulator, the upper and lower bounds of occupant responses subject to the regulated corridors were obtained. It was found that these prescribed corridors may be either so wide as to allow extreme variations in occupant response or so narrow that they are physically unrealizable in the laboratory test environment. A new corridor based on specifications for the test parameters of acceleration, velocity. crush distance, and duration for frontal vehicle impacts is given.

Abstract This exploratory study examines the extent to which mode differentially impacts the quantity and quality of interactional features in second language (L2) task-based interaction. Following a within-subject, repeated measures design, intermediate adult learners (n = 20) completed four (counter-balanced) tasks with a confederate interlocutor in the following conditions: audio-chat, video-chat, text-chat, and multimodal chat (in which participants could interact using more than one form of communication). Quantitative analyses examined the quality of learners’ interactions, including negotiation, recasts, and LREs. Data regarding learners’ perceptions of type of technology were also collected to provide a more holistic perspective. The results demonstrate differences in terms of interactional features and learners’ preference based on mode of technology.

The purpose of this study is to increase knowledge about how technology teachers in grades 1-3 perceive their own teaching in the subject technology linked to conditions such as education, time frame, teaching materials, materials and equipment. The study was conducted with the help of qualitative interviews in which eight active and educated technology teachers in grades 1-3 participated. The interviews examined the teachers' individual views on the technology subjectaround the deficits that the Swedish Schools Inspectorate report from 2014 highlights. Furthermore, it was investigated how the teachers' attitudes are affected by the mentioned conditions and whether there were more factors that they considered influenced their teaching in the subject of technology. The analysis of the interviews was inspired by a phenomenography inspired model where the teachers' statements were analyzed and linked to previous research. The results of the survey show that the teacher's competence in the subject of technology is not decisive for whether the teacher feels safe and competent in teaching. The security and competence are rather clarified in how much education the teacher has in technology. It emerged that the conditions of the technology subject are affected by the economy, parts such as materials, equipment and further education are given lower priority financially by both teachers and school management. Conclusions drawn in this study are that technology teaching and teachers' attitudes are largely influenced by how the subject is prioritized by the schoolmanagement. If the subject is not prioritized more by teachers and school leaders, the subject will not be more visible than it already is.

Odeh, Bassel. „Exploring the role of technology in optimising the care of patients with long term conditions“. Thesis, Kingston University, 2017. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/40727/.

Annotation:
The number of patients diagnosed with long term conditions in the UK is increasing with an expected number of 18 million patients by 2018, responsible for 69% of all spending on health and social care in England. These challenges cannot be solved solely by conventional approaches and other alternatives, such as cost-effective technological solutions, must be considered to increase patient's independence and quality of life, and produce cost savings for the authorities. This practice-based research explored the potential role of technologies in the care of patients with long term conditions, and aimed to evaluate the acceptance and effectiveness of a telehealth service provided to patients' with chronic obstructive pulomary disease and heart failure; to map and compare chronic obstructive pulmonary disease care pathways between different EU countries to better understand how technologies fit within the standard forms of care; to explore how m-health interventions can be developed and designed to support the care of cancer patients and survivors; and to provide data on UK cancer patients' ownership of and interest in m-health technologies. Mixed-mthod research approach was used in this study with a mixture of face-to-face and email semi-structured interviews, postal and online questionnaires, and data extraction from available databases. This approach was selected to harness the strengths of, both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Seven nurses, working on telehealth for an average of 15 months were interviewed. Lack of resources and organisational support, patient selection criteria, and technological support were identified as barriers for effective implementation of telehealth. Telehealth reduced the number of both A&E and hospital admissions by 36% (P=0.03) and 28% (P=0.02), respectively. 27 patients responded to the postal questionnaire and were very satisfied with the service. They agreed that telehealth had improved their health, was a convenient form of healthcare delivery for them, and that it made them more involved in the decisions about their care or treatment. Five COPD-specialised HCPs were interviewed, and the COPD care pathway was compared between 5 EU countries including Germany, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands and England. Lack of communication among different healthcare providers managing COPD and co-morbities is a common feature of the studies care pathways. In all countries, the lifestyle management services provided were similar with no specific tools used to enhance patients' adherance, and no specified role/training existing for informal carers (partners, family & friends). Telehealth can play a role int he integrated care of long tem conditions by providing means communication allowing better communications between different healthcare providers managing LTCs and co-morbidities. Next, the role of m-health in cancer care was explored. A need for m-health platforms to support cancer patients and survivors was identified, and two m-health platforms were developed and designed using patient's centred approach and Waterfall system development model. MyAppPal and CanAdvice+ were designed to support colorectal cnacer srvivors set up on follow-up care plans and cancer patients receiving oral chemotheraphy at home, respectively. 12 colorectal cancer patients were interviewed and 69 patients responded to the postal questionnaire. Patients expereince with the support provided during follow up plan varied based on appointment type and location. They had problems remembering or accessing information as they moved away from their treatment, and reported needs for more specific and personalised information, more information on how to handle financial difficulties and social care, and more control over their hospital appointments. The usability scores of the developed apps were very positive, and they were seen as simple and attractive to use, and had very positive learnability and usability scores. Finally, 529 cancer patients completed surveys to assess their ownership of smart-technologies and interest in m-health apps. 90.5% of the patients had access to smartphone, tablet or both, and only patients' age significantly affected this ownership. Almost half of the patients showed an interest in the use of m-health apps, and two out of five were willing to download apps in were made available from the hospital. Five factors were found to significantly predict patients' willingness to use and download health applications, including age, health literacy, previous use of apps in general and health apps in particular, and previous use of smartphones/tablets to access related health information in the past six months. Ownership of smart-technologies and interest in m-health apps was independent from all other socio-economic factors. Technologies seem to be acceptable to patients with long term conditions, and can play an important role in improving their clinical outcomes if well designed, introduced, implemented and managed. Patients' perceptions of the usefulness and ease of use of these technologies seem to be a crucial factor in their acceptance of such interventions.

In the traditional philosophy of technology, the two main modus operandi found in conventional technology are categorised and described under the terms ‘control’ and ‘regulation’ as a way of differentiating between them. This occurs for two reasons: on the one hand, in order to specify the difference between the forms of technology that have been developed by since the Neolithic revolution and the ‘accidental’ technology (as discussed by Ortega y Gasset) of higher species or prehistoric man, and on the other to reveal the relationship between technology and (natural) science more precisely. In the meantime, however, modern technologies and new epistemic practices are challenging historical descriptions of the nature of technoscience and the dichotomy between ‘control’ and ‘regulation’ respectively. Bearing in mind the so-called new emerging sciences and technologies (NEST) and other developments in IT, cognitive technology, nanotechnology and biotechnology, this volume examines who or what can be conceptualised as the subject of processes of control and regulation. In terms of large-scale systems and the organisation of large social structures, methods of control are becoming increasingly problematic because digital information technologies especially are creating new, diverse ways of manipulating and regulating processes or conditions, for example monitoring, big data and profiling, while the counteractive consequences of the same development, for example the ever-increasing amount of data, acceleration, automatisation and the logic of sociotechnical infrastructures, are increasingly throwing the possibility of coordinated control into doubt.

In recent years, Arab activists have confronted authoritarian regimes both on the street and online, leaking videos and exposing atrocities, and demanding political rights. This book situates these critiques of power within a pervasive culture of scandal and leaks and shows how cultural production and political change in the contemporary Arab world are enabled by digital technology, yet emerge from traditional cultural models. Focusing on a new generation of activists and authors from Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula, the book connects WikiLeaks to The Arabian Nights, Twitter to mystical revelation, cyberattacks to pre-Islamic tribal raids, and digital activism to the affective scene-making of Arab popular culture. It shifts the epistemological and historical frameworks from the postcolonial condition to the digital condition and shows how new media challenge the novel as the traditional vehicle for political consciousness and intellectual debate. Theorizing the rise of “the leaking subject” who reveals, contests, and writes through chaotic yet highly political means, the book investigates the digital consciousness, virality, and affective forms of knowledge that jolt and inform the public and that draw readers in to the unfolding fiction of scandal. The book maps the changing landscape of Arab modernity, or Nahda, in the digital age and traces how concepts such as the nation, community, power, the intellectual, the author, and the novel are hacked and recoded through new modes of confrontation, circulation, and dissent.

AbstractResearch about indoor comfort in future years will increasingly be guided by the pressing need for decarbonizing the built environment due to climate change. Health, efficiency, and satisfaction of work and the feeling of comfort are largely determined by the interior criteria. The sustainable indoor environment is a result of complex factors: air conditioning (ventilation), indoor temperature, heating methods, lighting, and acoustic. This chapter explores and analyzes climatic, cultural, and behavioral factors that play an important role and have an influence on technology for an indoor regenerative environment. This chapter is based on an explorative literature review and reflects indoor environmental quality, users’ expectations, and users’ behavior from the perspective of different scientific disciplines. Current standards are based on a rational approach to thermal comfort, and indicators are determined on the measured subjects’ reactions during stabilized conditions in climatic chambers. It is concluded from these results that people in different environmental conditions react similarly to everyday life. Nevertheless, survey results suggest that achieving the optimal level of the indoor environment is possible when climatic, cultural, and social context is taken into account.

‘Researching ICT: The Scholars’ Alienated Experience’ examines the experience of academics researching the ethical and societal aspects of ICT. The chapter asks how effective Marx’s theory of alienation would be when applied to what could be described as a relatively ‘benign’ experience since it is generally assumed that researchers have some autonomy over their work. The chapter opens by describing the conflictual and constantly changing conditions that shape the scholars’ working environment with its attendant stresses and contradictory pressures including a neoliberal management environment, problems associating with publishing including peer review and the wider contexts of demands s at universities including those of teaching and administration. The author uses Sarah Mann’s application of Marx’s theory of alienation to students' lack of engagement to bring into focus this other contributor to the alienated condition of the academic arising in Higher Education. Important factors contributing to the alienated feelings of researchers expressed through the research included commitment to a subject, creativity (or lack of), collaboration and/vs competition and academics’ lack of control over ‘process and product’ when it comes to research funding and publishing the results of it. The analysis concludes that pressures arising from the competitive research environment are the focus of much concern for researchers and that the analysis of alienation as presented by Marx is helpful in understanding their condition.

Arguable viewed as promising in business, this literature review identifies key features of this promise when applied to education. This chapter connects business and education to identify Google AdSense as a valid tool and subject matter to be considered for use within the mobile and wearable technology curriculum. This chapter suggests considering positive outcomes generated using Google AdSense for incorporation into an education curriculum. Google AdSense should be applied to create more reasons to attract diverse user groups. This chapter also identifies the importance of Google needing a set of regulatory policies and procedures to avoid misuse of Google AdSense. In cases where monetary transactions occur, a possibility of violating the set terms and conditions exists. The chapter concludes with a clear call for inclusion of Google AdSense in an education curriculum.

Using a sociological conceptual framework based on discussions on gender, ICT gap, and women empowerment (Stromquist, 2014; Mezirow, 2006), we will try to understand, in an innovative way, the available statistical data collected in national and international surveys on this subject; we will also add qualitative data collected in an exploratory study, conducted in a Portuguese rural village. This study was a multi-site ethnographic research project (Falzon & Hall, 2009) with participant observation and in-depth interviews. We analysed the infrastructure conditions and constraints, with the aim of giving a voice to the interviewed women, in order to better understand their representations of ICT and the reasons for their use and non-use. The results allow us to advance some possible paths to mitigate some of the constraints to ICT empowerment among rural women.

This chapter examines how reformers imagined subjects that would be amenable to and fixable with their intervention in comparison with the ways that students negotiated identification and difference with each other at school and online. It considers how problematization and rendering technical processes produce amenable and fixable subjects, how these intended beneficiaries exert unanticipated pressures on a philanthropic intervention, and how the reformers tend to respond to such pressures in rather retrograde ways. In the case of the Downtown School for Design, Media, and Technology, reformers imagined the project's intended beneficiaries as digital kids, a population that presumably would be especially amenable to the intervention's focus on gaming and new media production. The chapter also discusses assembling of affinities and divisions among amenable and fixable subjects, conditions of sanctioned nonconformity, crossing of boundaries, and identities-in-practice in relation to subject fixations.

Any biomedical signal has the specialty in terms of the remoteness and nature of their source as an advantage over other natural signals. The analysis of biomedical signal plays a significant role in medical, and to be exact cardiological decision making, provided, the subject information is accurate and reliable. Normally experienced and trained medical practitioners, are known to study and know them better, but in this age of technology computerized expert system are better for long term continuous monitoring and automatic decision making. This led to evolution of biomedical engineering as a separate wing where parts of engineering under automatic signal processing and analysis studies are done. ECG being the most vital physiological signal, its acquisition technique, noise and artifacts elimination methodologies are discussed in this chapter. A brief description on ECG and its usage as biometric and analysis of Atrial Fibrillation is presented.

Different perspectives of the scientists towards content, structure, forms, conditions for efficiency of individualizaion of learning as well as approaches to definitions of tutor, tutorship, tutor technology have been consolidated. In particular it is emphasized that thanks to individualization of learning such important qualities as self-dependence, proactivity, creativity, self-confidence, dedication, research-like style of activities are developed and shaped. Introduction of learning individualizaion technologies in high school education process helps saving time, provides additional opportunities for transition from traditional learning programme to individual self-education without extra burden on students; it encourages gaining necessary professional experience, development of individual style of learning activities; encourages strengthening of individual approaches in acquiring professional knowlege, skills, competencies as well as developing creativity; it also boosts intellectual development of future lecturers, establisment of subject-subject relationship between lecturers and students. Use of tutorship technologies is one of possible ways to implement learning individualization of students. Tutorship as a pedagogical technology meets performance requirements such as (conceptual importance, systemic approach, ability for reproduction, manageability, efficiency, algorithmic presentation, design). Tutorship technology implementation consists of four stages (preparatory and logistical stage; development of tutor’s individual learning programme on a given subject; tutor’s support per se; and completion stage) and does not foresee a separate post of a tutor as tutor’s functions in this case are fulfilled by a lecturer (lecturer-tutor). In such model of pedagogical activities tutor’s support is limited in time and in learning content. Tutorship technology is an opportunity for implementation of the principle of individualizaion of student’s learning; subject-subject relationship between lecturers and students; it changes the role of lecturers who become lecturers-educators, moderators, coaches, facilitators, instructors, mentors, partners, i.e. tutors.

The purpose of this chapter is to study the implementation of technology in today’s psychoanalytical scenario. Many historical and cultural changes have taken place since Freud up to these days. To the contemporary subjective constitution, the human being is complex and determined by a myriad of biological, psychological, and social factors. Thus, culture is not external to the dimensions making up the subject, and technology plays a key role in people’s current lives. Within the psychoanalytical technique, the setting has changed and adapted to the different social contexts, to the needs of each subject and also of the analyst. Contemporary psychoanalysis faces the challenge of setting up new scenarios to fit a new present that is taking shape. These are mixed settings, where the physical and virtual presences complement each other, simultaneously and alternately. Both the virtual and the physical realities are different and, therefore, do not replace each other. Thus, the purpose of this chapter is to reflect on the conditions that make possible the analytical encounter mediated by technology.

A case study is presented for a heat exchanger subjected to a postulated beyond-design basis over-pressurization. Gasket behavior is explicitly modeled with commercial FEA software, and tuned to experimental data. Material (strain-hardening plasticity) and geometric nonlinearities are also accounted for. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional analysis is performed and compared, and all results are compared with standard ASME Code design criteria for bolted joints leakage. Recommendations for use of FEA technology to assess the behavior of bolted joints subject to extreme loading behaviors are presented.

This paper presents the results of the testing of an oil-on-water leak detection technology for isolated locations without power or communications infrastructure. A special attention was paid to the ability of the sensors to detect hydrocarbon leaks under freezing conditions, with thick ice formed on the surface of the water. A viable solution for remote locations and large water crossings needs ultra low-power solution and/or cyclic operation. The technology evaluated was a fully passive impedance polymer-absorption sensor (PAS) featuring “zero-power” consumption. This technology also provides an additional advantage, “an event memory”, and is perfectly suitable for cyclic operation for detecting moving oil stains. In October 2017 three polymer-absorption sensors of different lengths were placed in outdoor location in Ontario, Canada for long-term testing of reliability in freezing conditions. The sensors were connected to cellular modem for generating alerts. Another battery of three sensors of same lengths was installed in outdoor testing facility near Ottawa, ON, Canada and connected to real-time data acquisition equipment. A preliminary series of leak tests performed in October/November 2017 confirmed the initial assumptions of excellent sensitivity of the hydrocarbon oil-on-water detection based on polymer absorption. The average power consumption of the sensor excitation and its measurement frontend during the first two months of testing were found to be extremely low, a fraction of the power needed for the wireless modem itself. The leak tests were extended to oil under ice detection performed with 5 North-American crude oils and with 3 refined products from Mid-December 2017 to Mid-February 2018. The sensitivity, the sensor excitation/measurement front end power consumption, and the reliability of the sensors were assessed at freezing temperatures, with thickness of the ice comprised between 80 and 100 mm. The paper also presents the availability of stand-alone communication equipment suitable for integrating oil-on-water sensors, as well the energy harvesting or energy storage technologies for different climatic conditions.

Hydrothermal gasification is a promising technology for the treatment of wet organic biomass, and as such, has been subject to significant research effort. It is well known that two groups of catalysts exhibit high activity for hydrothermal gasification—broadly classified as platinum group metals and alkali salts. In the present work, this effect is further investigated through a study of the synergistic effects of sodium carbonate and Pt/Al2O3 on gas yield from cellulose at 315°C. Results indicate that dilute alkali appears far more efficient in promoting gasification reactions in the presence of Pt/Al2O3. Potential mechanisms and a comparison with the alkaline degradation pathways of glucose are discussed.

A framework has been developed that makes use of the optimization software package LS-OPT driving the hydrocode CTH (CTH is developed and maintained at Sandia National Laboratories, LS-OPT is commercially available from Livermore Software Technology Corp.). CTH was used to model the explosive detonation and determine the resultant kinetic energy delivered to the case by the energetic material. In this follow-on effort to a previous study [1], the range of constraints and free parameters used in the optimization study was expanded.

Abstract Steam Turbines operating in Concentrated Solar Plants and Peaking Combined Cycles are subjected to daily thermal stresses, induced by start-ups and load variations, deeply affecting allowed production per day. The extent and number of such thermal stresses is largely depending on the capability, of both plant and operators, to smooth the variations in steam temperature and load resulting from both weather conditions (in CSPs) and grid demand. In this operating scenario, conservative simplified rules are normally applied to determine daily warm-up times duration at starts, to preserve critical components from Low Cycle Fatigue damage; the planned maintenance intervals, as well, have been typically defined on the basis of a specified number of starts and running hours. In this article, the application of an online Rotor Stress Monitoring (RSM) technology, installed in the Steam Turbine User Control Panel, is used to directly determine the fatigue damage cumulated by each Start-Up and variation in operating condition. The results of application of this technology, with respect to standard formulations, are shown for a specific Concentrated Solar Plant across an operating period of four years. It is shown how, using the RSM as a basis for either startup or maintenance scheduling, can result in optimization of start-up times and maintenance intervals both for new units and retro-fit. The applicability of rotor stress direct monitoring and life analysis to higher temperature services is also introduced.
