The article focuses on Beckett’s presence in Poland in the years from 1952 till 1989. It presents the historical and social background of the author’s fi rst works, as well as the reactions they elicited: essays, stage productions, and their reviews. The earliest commentaries Beckett by Polish critics were published abroad, in the Paris-based Kultura and the London-based Wiadomości. The beginning of Beckett’s reception in Poland dates from 1956, when Jan Błoński mentioned Beckett’s novel, Molloy, in Przekrój. A year later, Julian Rogozińsi published in print the only interview given by the Irish-French author to the Polish press. At the same time, Jerzy Zawieyski saw the Parisian premiere of Endgame, and Adam Tarn began to systematically publish translations of the future Noble prize recipient’s works in Dialog. In 1957 two of Beckett’s most important plays premiered in Poland: Waiting for Godot in Warsaw’s Teatr Współczesny and Endgame in Krakow’s Teatr 38.

Grave 3/2016 from site 3 in Węgrzce, Comm. Zielonki, Kraków District was discovered during archaeological excavations preceding construction of a detached house. This was a niche grave, holding two burials: a male aged 38–47 years, and a child 4–5 years old. The recorded funeral rite is characteristic of a cluster of Corded Ware culture cemeteries on the lower Dłubnia River, near Kraków. A vessel recovered from the grave reveals local features characteristic of that cluster. One radiocarbon age determination was obtained for the burial, pointing to ca. 2470–2350 BC as the most likely range. Thus, the grave links with the younger phase of the Final Eneolithic in Lesser Poland.

Byron twierdził, że Manfred nie był przeznaczony na scenę, ale jego poemat dramatyczny był sporadycznie wystawiany w dziewiętnastowiecznym teatrze. W 1848 roku Robert Schumann zaadaptował poemat do wykonania scenicznego, skomponował uwerturę i muzykę incydentalną. Manfreda w wersji Schumanna wystawiono w warszawskim Teatrze Wielkim z Józefem Kotarbińskim, znanym aktorem, kierownikiem teatru i krytykiem, w roli głównej. The 1892 Manfred in Warsaw Teatr Wielki Byron claimed that Manfred had not been intended for the stage, but his dramatic poem was occasionally produced in the nineteenth-century theatre. In 1848 Robert Schumann adapted the poem for stage performance, composing the Overture and incidental music. Schumann’s version of Manfred was staged in Warsaw Teatr Wielki, with Józef Kotarbiński, a well-known actor, theatre manager and critic as the protagonist. The production was followed by a heated debate in the press. The central controversy focused on whether Byron’s “metaphysical drama” was suitable for the stage and relevant for the late nineteenth-century Polish audience. The aim of this paper is to examine central issues in this debate by scrutinizing the press reviews of the Warsaw production. As the reviews are by their very nature subjective, their examination reveals much more about their authors’ literary and theatrical preferences than about the performance itself, and provides an insight in the early stages of the development of the so-called Young Poland movement (Młoda Polska), with its emphasis on individualism and subjectivity, interest in metaphysics, and prevalence of lyricism. The 1892 Manfred in Warsaw may be seen as an attempt at introducing great Romantic poetry in the theatre, paving the way for the theatre productions of Polish Romantic drama, which Kotarbiński was to stage as the manager of Teatr Miejski in Kraków. The article also contributes to the history of Byron’s reception in Poland.

The interest in bike transport in Polish cities and towns has been growing systematically in the recent years. A great number of local authorities take various actions to support the development of cycling systems. They make an effort to develop a cycling infrastructure – bike lanes, Bike&Ride type of parking, bike stands and advanced stop lines. An increased interest in bike-sharing systems is visible as well. Apart from that, the authorities implement policies and take other actions which make cycling in a city more convenient. The aim of the article is to characterize the experience of Polish cities in the area of bike transport support, with a special attention to bike-sharing systems. The article presents a comparison of 38 city bike systems. In addition, the Wavelo system in Kraków was studied in detail. Wavelo city bike system is very popular among citizens of Kraków. Despite relatively high prices and the lack of free minutes, the number of system users is growing. A large number of docking stations and their locations make bikes more accessible to citizens. Moreover, Kraków's authorities take action to develop a proper bike infrastructure which increases the interest in cycling as a transportation system.

ABSTRACT Boczarowski A. 2012. Palaeoenvironmental interpretation of echinoderm assemblages from Bathonian ore-bearing clays at Gnaszyn (Krakow-Silesia Homocline, Poland). Acta Geologica Polonica, 62(3), 351-366. Warszawa. This paper presents the results of an investigation into the variability of echinoderm assemblages from Bathonian ore-bearing clays from Gnaszyn. Remains of Crinoidea, Asteroidea, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea, and Holothuroidea have been studied from 38 rock samples. The most common echinoderms represented are the crinoids Balanocrinusberchteni and Chariocrinus andreae and a few species of the holothurian genera Priscopedatus, Calclamna, Staurocaudina, Eocaudina, Achistrum, Theelia and Hemisphaeranthos. The echinoderms from Gnaszyn show various life strategies: benthic or epibenthic forms, sessile sestonophages (Crinoidea), motile macrophages (Asteroidea) and detritivores (Asteroidea, Ophiuroidea, Echinoidea), infaunal and epifaunal detritus feeders, sediment feeders or rake-feeders (Holothuroidea). Their presence suggests well oxygenated and presumably relatively cold bottom marine waters. The parts of the Gnaszyn section around concretion horizons and characterized by the ubiquitous occurrence of the holothurian Theelia and echinoids were deposited during phases of optimal living conditions with sufficient influx of plant detritus and good oxygenation of the sea bottom. These parts commonly host echinoderm associations dominated by crinoid remains, which occasionally are still articulated (or disarticulated but remaining intact) - this points to a quiet environment with normal oxygenation of the bottom waters but anaerobic/dysaerobic conditions in the sediment.

The distribution of natural wintering roosts of bats in Poland is not homogenous, and covers almost exclusively the south of Poland: the Kraków–Wieluń Upland, the Sudetes, the Carpathian and the Świętokrzyskie mountains. Man-made underground shelters, on the other hand, are found across the country, including areas outside the range of natural caves. Based on literature data and own observations, the size and species composition of winter bat aggregations occupying natural and artificial roosts were compared. The data concern records both published and collected between 1992 and 2019. The start date of the range was assumed due to the well-established formula of nationwide bat monitoring that started in 1988 (important factor: correctness of species identification), while the end date was based on the availability of publications. We arbitrarily adopted 50 individuals as the minimum number of bats in a certain wintering site, found at a minimum of one during the study period. In total, we collected data on 128 wintering sites: 42 natural and 86 man-made. The overall size of the analysed aggregations reaches at a minimum of 88 800 individuals of which man-made gathered at minimum 77 600 individuals, while natural gathered almost 12 200 individuals. The most abundant bat aggregations were recorded in man-made underground sites: up to 38 594 individuals, while in natural sites only up to 2900 individuals, but the average aggregation size did not differ between the two types of shelters (169 vs. 156, F = 3.368, df = 1,128; p = 0.069). In contrast, the number of species wintering in natural shelters is higher than in man-made ones (8 vs. 6 species, F = 9.785, df = 1.128, p = 0.002179). P. pipistrellus was found only in anthropogenic shelters. In addition, this type of shelters is characterised by a higher proportion of M. daubentonii (16.4% vs. 3.7%), M. myotis (42.0% vs. 29.1%), M. nattereri (26.4% vs. 16.5%), and B. barbastellus (11.3% vs. 7%), as well as species recorded incidentally: P. austriacus (0.09% vs. 0.04%) and E. serotinus (0.17% vs. 0.07%). In contrast, R. hipposideros (16.7%) and M. emarginatus (5.7%) were recorded almost exclusively in caves; moreover, M. brandtii/mystacinus (15.6% vs. 0.3%) and P. auritus (4.2% vs. 1.9%) were clearly predominant in these shelters. Some of these differences could be explained by the effect of geographical location: some species are found only in the south of the country (R. hipposideros, M. emarginatus), on the other hand, artificial shelters are usually characterised by more dynamic microclimate, preferred, in turn, by species rarely found in natural shelters.

CONCUBINE AND ENCHANTRESS: KATARZYNA TELNICZANKA AND HER BLACK MYTH Summary S.C. R O W E L L Katarzyna Hochstadt of Telnicz (ca 1480–1528), mistress of Sigismund the Old, mother of John of the Lithuanian Dukes, bishop of Vilnius (1519–36) and Poznań (1536–38) has come down in history as an enchanting beauty or a witch, or both. Her image is defined by her relationship with powerful men – her lover, her son, her husband (Andrzej Kościelecki, castellan of Wojnicz and sub–treasurer of the Crown of Poland) and alleged victims (various royal secretaries and high–ranking clerics). This article assesses what little by way of solid evidence is known of her life and how this can be related with the image of man–chasing vamp, interference in the running of the diocese of Vilnius (thereby allegedly provoking the appointment of bishop protectors to the see) and scandal in village and town (according to one seventeenth–century historian). There is evidence that while John of the Lithuanian Dukes was still a minor and enjoyed the rank of provost of Płock and Poznań and canon of Kraków the property associated with his office was overseen by his step–father and perhaps by his mother. After John became bishop of Vilnius, Her Magnificence the Bishop‘s Mother, the Lady Dowager Castellan of Wojnicz and Sub–Treasurer of the Crown of Poland resided for some time at her son‘s court in Vilnius and on at least two occasions exercised her maternal influence to facilitate access to the bishop for canons (Stanislaw Dambrowka, Martin of Dusniki and Albert Wielezinski) involved in a dispute with their brother canon and scholast Jakub Staszkowski. The detailed discussion of internal cathedral disputes in the presence of a lay person, and even worse, a woman, scandalised members of the Cathedral Chapter but there is no evidence that Lady Katarzyna sought to determine the outcome of this case. We also know that she patronised at least one noblewoman (the widowed sister–in–law of Bishop Albert Tabor) who subsequently adopted Bishop John as her son and heir and made financial endowments on both the bishop and his mother. After Katarzyna died in Vilnius in the late summer of 1528 her corpse was transported to Kraków for burial by a Vilnius canon, Erasmus Eustachii, whose family had connections with Andrzej Kościelecki and Bishop John of Vilnius. The satirical verse penned by Andrzej Krzycki concerning a mother–stepmother and father–stepfather (Katarzyna and King Sigismund) and „an old hag who stinks like a goat“ represents neo–Latin literary exercises provoked by fear of the influence at the royal court of Katarzyna and her family rather than an accurate and literal description of Katarzyna and her activities.

Macleaya microcarpa (Maxim.) Fedde, also known as smallfruit plume poppy, is a perennial herb belonging to the family Papaveraceae. The plant, together with the better-known species M. cordata (Willd.) R. Br., is native to central China and is now planted worldwide for medicinal purposes. In October 2008 and August 2009, dozens of smallfruit plume poppy planted in the Kraków Botanical Garden, Poland, were found to be severely infected with a powdery mildew. White colonies with abundant sporulation developed on both sides of leaves and young stems, forming circular to irregular patches. Infections caused leaf yellowing and premature defoliation. The damage has been observed every year since 2009. Representative voucher specimens were deposited in the fungal herbarium of the W. Szafer Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences (KRAM) and the Korea University herbarium (KUS). Appressoria on the mycelia were lobed, often in pairs. Conidiophores composed of three to four cells arose from the upper part of creeping hyphae, 65 to 120 × 7 to 10 μm, attenuated toward the base, sub-straight or slightly flexuous in foot-cells, and produced conidia singly. Conidia were hyaline, oblong-elliptical to doliiform, 25 to 38 × 12 to 18 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.8 to 2.6; lacked fibrosin bodies; and produced germ tubes on the subterminal position with club-shaped or lobed appressoria. The conidial surface was wrinkled to irregularly reticulate. No chasmothecia were found. The structures described above match well with the anamorph of Erysiphe macleayae R.Y. Zheng & G.Q. Chen (3). To confirm the identity of the causal fungus, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA from KUS-F24459 was amplified using primers ITS5 and P3 (4) and directly sequenced. The resulting sequence of 553 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JQ681217). A GenBank BLAST search using the present data revealed >99% sequence similarity of the isolate with E. macleayae on M. cordata from Japan (AB016048). Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation by gently pressing diseased leaves onto leaves of three healthy potted plants. Three noninoculated plants served as controls. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 25°C. Inoculated plants developed signs and symptoms after 7 days, whereas the control plants remained healthy. The fungus present on the inoculated plants was morphologically identical to that originally observed on diseased plants. The powdery mildew infections of M. cordata associated with E. macleayae have been recorded in China and Japan (2), and more recently in Germany (1,3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. macleayae on M. microcarpa globally as well as in Poland. This mildew species was described in China and is endemic to Asia, where chasmothecia of the fungus were found. Only recently have powdery mildews been found on M. cordata in Germany (1,3) and now on M. microcarpa in Poland, indicating the fungus is spreading in Europe. References: (1) N. Ale-Agha et al. Background The Helsinki Accords signed in 1975 set inviolability of frontiers, ensured respect for human rights and hence formed the new international situation in the East Central Europe. With the emergence of opposition movements and the crisis of so-cialist bloc and the communist ideology, the issue of the future order, interethnic rela-tions, borders and national minorities arose. Purpose The purpose of the article is to research preconditions for signing of “The Declaration on the Matter of Principles of the Polish-Ukrainian Cooperation” in 1987 and its role in paving the way for bilateral relationship. Results. On the Polish opposition initiative in 1987 “The Declaration on the Mat-ter of Principles of the Polish-Ukrainian Cooperation” was signed with representatives of the Ukrainian emigration. It supported inviolability of borders and respect for nation-al minorities’ rights. The declaration was the first agreed between Polish opposition and Ukrainian émigrés document to suggest integrated and thorough project of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation after the downfall of the Socialist Camp and the Soviet Union. Its statements developed by civil society institutions, and partly approved by the gov-ernment-in-exile, were recognized by state structures of both nations after gaining of in-dependence and became a basis of their relationship. The Declaration gave a great impe-tus to normalization of relations between independent Poland and Ukraine. Its principles were implemented in an interstate framework treaty between Ukraine and Poland in 1992 and in a joint statement about mutual understanding and unity signed on the twen-ty-first of May, 1997. AbstractThe numerous Polish productions of Macbeth in an overt or covert fashion address issues that have been at the core of political debate in the past decade, such as the state’s engagement in military missions that are in fact real wars. Furthermore, they also comment on the new Polish political system (is it still “new”?) and the situation of individuals in it, how they can profit in it. The paper discusses productions such as Andrzej Wajda’s (2004) from the Stary Theatre in Kraków, Maja Kleczewska’s (2004) from the Kochanowski Theatre in Opole, Grzegorz Jarzyna’s (2005; the full title is “2007: Macbeth”) from the Teatr Rozmaitości (TR) in Warsaw, and Piotr Kruszczyński’s (2005) from the Polski Theatre in Warsaw.
