Background. Despite the style of Taekwon-Do taught by the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) being founded in the Republic of Korea (ROK; South Korea), it is known predominately as “North Korean Taekwon-Do.” Problem and Aim. Taekwon-Do was introduced to the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK; North Korea) in 1980, but since then no studies have reported how it is practiced in that country due to the DPRK government’s restricting access to its populace. This research aims to begin establishing if there are differences in pedagogical purpose and praxis in DPRK Taekwon-Do. Methodology. An internet search for individuals who traveled to the DPRK to practice Taekwon-Do specifically was conducted. A systematic literature of ITF pedagogical materials was performed, and a multipurpose, qualitative questionnaire was implemented. Out of the seven individuals who were identified and contacted, two agreed to participate in the current study; however, one of those two were disqualified due to incorrectly completing the questionnaire. A descriptive, non-experimental case study of one subject (Singaporean female aged 36 yr.) was then conducted. A qualitative analysis of the data resulting from the questionnaire and follow-up interviews was performed. Results. All five areas of the ITF’s curriculum (i.e., fundamental techniques, tul [forms], sparring, dallyon [forging or conditioning of the body], and self-defense) and the three levels of Taekwon-do’s pedagogy (i.e., musul [martial technique], muyae [martial artistry], and mudo [martial way]) were found in DPRK Taekwon-Do. Discussion and Conclusions. Despite the severe limitations of being unable to interview DPRK Taekwon-Do practitioners directly and the smallest small sample group possible, it was learned that DPRK instructors most likely teach all aspects of General Choi’s Composition of Taekwon-Do, and the stratified Taekwon-Do pedagogy theory was found in the subject’s practice in the DPRK.

The purpose of the study was to find out the degree of scientific and methodological support for the physical preparation of sportsmen in taekwon-do ITF. Materials and methods. The methods of theoretical analysis and generalization of data from scientific and methodical literature were used. The analysis of data related to the system of sportsmen preparation, the formation of their physical, technical and tactical preparedness in taekwon-do WTF, ITF and other martial arts, which are similar in structure and content of competitive activity, was carried out. Results and discussion. Taekwan-do belongs to the group of martial arts. There are different versions of this sport. The kinds of martial arts that are not parts of the Olympic program are inferior in volume and depth of scientific research. One of these sports is taekwan-do ITF. It has been established that most of the available studies relate to the characteristics of taekwon-do in the system of martial arts, the study of the effectiveness of the use of taekwon-do tools for the development of physical qualities of various population groups, the effectiveness of transferring the physical preparedness of sportsmen to the level of their technical and tactical preparedness, the effectiveness of training process and the results of competitive activity. A large circle of shortcomings has been established for the system of sportsmen’s preparation in taekwon-do WTF (the Olympic version of the sport). At the same time, the situation is generally devastating for taekwon-do ITF. The number of scientific and methodical developments is unsatisfactory, and on some topical issues, in particular, there is no differentiation of physical preparation. The existing content of the scientific works of specialists who dealt with the issues of sportsmen’s preparation in taekwon-do WTF and other martial arts, which are similar in structure and content of competitive activity do not meet the needs of methodical support of physical preparation sportsmen in taekwon-do ITF. Conclusion. The number of scientific and methodological developments for taekwon-do ITF is minimal. Summarizing the opinions of the majority of specialists, we are inclined to the need to gradually increase the physical preparation of sportsmen along with the transition to the next stage of multi-year training. However, the development of approaches to the optimal distribution of training loads for the physical preparation of taekwon-do ITF sportsmen in various structural formations of the training process is insufficient

This study aimed to examine the relation between the feeling of meaningfulness and also the characteristics of engaged participation (namely, the frequency of participation in voluntary groupings) and the level of anxiety among those who train a group of elite taekwon-do fighters. The research encompassed 58 people, all of whom were taekwon-do ITF (International Taekwon-do Federation) athletes at an elite level. The Questionnaire of Life Orientation (SOC-29) and the Inventory of the State and Features of Anxiety were used. The data were supplemented by the authors’ own questions referring to activities in the field of taekwon-do. The group of taekwon-do fighters chosen was internally divided with regard to the level of the state of anxiety and the feeling of meaningfulness (p < 0.01). It was found that, together with the growth in the values stipulated in the accepted model, the frequency of taekwon-do groupings (β = −0.38), as well as the feeling of meaningfulness (β = −0.31), the value of the level of intensification of the state of anxiety dropped. The data revealed that, together with age, the level of anxiety decreased and the feeling of meaningfulness increased. The difference in the levels of anxiety between women and men was statistically non-significant (p > 0.05). The research findings illustrate that the feeling of meaningfulness and participation in groupings constitute a differentiating factor in terms of the intensification of the average level of anxiety in the elite taekwon-do group. More frequent participation in training goes hand-in-hand with the greater feeling of meaningfulness; perhaps, this is associated with the specific training, which, among other factors, favours adaptation to challenges and actions under pressure.

The purpose of the study was to define the structure of means of general preparedness control for athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF. Materials and methods. The following methods were used: the method of theoretical analysis and academic and methodological references data generalization; analysis of document materials; the method of expert polling; methods of mathematical and statistical data processing. The structure and content of Training programs in taekwon-do ITF, WTF and karate WKF, rules of competitions in taekwon-do ITF were studied. Experts (24 coaches) determined priority variants of shuttle running, tests to control speed qualities, endurance, strength endurance of various muscles groups, explosive power, speed and power endurance, flexibility of athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF. Results and discussion. The issue of various aspects of preparedness control in the system of multi-year athletes’ improvement has always been topical. Over 70 separate means suggested by specialists in various versions of taekwon-do to control general physical preparedness have been revealed. The issue of parameter actualization for control of general preparedness of athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF has emerged. The battery of tests in general physical preparedness of athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF included: shuttle running 3x10 m (agility), 30-meter dash speed, 1000-meter run (endurance), chin-up and body lifting from the sitting position (power endurance), padded ball throw upfront and long jump from the spot (explosive power), skip rope jumping for 60 seconds, squats on one leg (30 sec), multiple jumps on one leg for 20 seconds (speed and power endurance), side splits, forward body lean in standing position, and “bridge” (flexibility). The following tests have been used to control coordination qualities: “8-shapes running with direction change” aimed at determination of general coordination; “rotation jumps (left-right)” – space perception; “the difference between forward and backwards jump” – distance perception; “three rotations forward – three rotations backwards” (time forward, time backwards, overall time) – keeping kinematic and dynamic motion characteristics; “Romberg’s test right/left” – statistical balance; dynamic balance and complex instrumental measurement of complex and specific reactions. Conclusion. Based on the research, parameters for control of general physical preparedness of athletes aged 12-13 years in taekwon-do ITF have been specified

Abstract Introduction. Fighting effectiveness of combat sports athletes depends, among other factors, on response time. Athletes must react swiftly to various actions of their opponents during the combat. Understanding the determinants of response time can provide valuable insights and optimize the sports training process. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of Led Lighting Training (LLT) on response time of athletes representing extremely different combat sports. Material and Methods. Elite taekwon-do athletes aged 26.67 ± 7.79 years with training experience of 13.67 ± 6.75 years, and elite wrestlers aged 26.0 ± 3.74 years with training experience of 13.0 ± 3.74 years, participated in the study. Each participant performed a 6-minute physical exertion requiring concentration and proper decision-making as part of LLT. It consisted of three two-minute motor tasks performed on Batak Lite. Response time was recorded during the exercise, with one-minute breaks between motor tasks. Results. Among taekwon-do athletes, the lowest level of response was noted during the first LLT task, whereas the highest was observed in the third task. Response time significantly improved with time of exertion among taekwon-do athletes, while it remained similar among wrestlers after 2, 4, and 6 minutes of the test. Only in the first round did taekwon-do athletes and wrestlers significantly differ in response time (p = 0.0025). Response time and training experience did not reveal a significant correlation. Conclusions. The specificity of training, which is determined by the specificity of combat, does not differentiate elite taekwon-do athletes and wrestlers based on their response abilities. Taekwon-do athletes should control the type and duration of warm-up exercises before combat.

As one of the masterpieces of early South Korean animation, the film Robot Taekwon V has instilled hopes and dreams in a younger generation of Koreans since the late 1970s when it was released, while critics have cited Robot Taekwon V as being influenced by American pop culture, particularly the Disney animation style, and have accused it of plagiarizing the designs of the popular Japanese animation Mazinger Z. In the 1970s, the Korean government actively promoted economic development for the ‘modernization of the country’ under the military regime’s inculcation of anti-communism. Robot Taekwon V was produced with the intent of being an anti-communist tool and, further, it sought the nationalism of postwar South Korea and promoted the country’s confidence in the future that eventually resulted in rapid economic development. This socio-political context is portrayed both in the form of a ‘gigantic robot’ and in the use of non-Korean appearances for Korean characters. Considering these aspects, the author examines how Robot Taekwon V navigates the intricacies of the postwar ideological framework, manages foreign cultural influences and suggests transnationalism through its character design and narrative.

Abstract Introduction. The aim of the study was to compare CMAs in elite wrestlers and taekwon-do competitors. Material and methods. Forty-nine Greco-Roman wrestlers and ITF taekwon-do competitors were included in the study. The wrestlers were 21.9±2.74 years old, while the taekwon-do competitors were 22.7±5.78 years old. The former group had between 7 and 14 years' training experience and the latter group had from 6 to 16 years' experience. All subjects were elite sportspeople (between first class and international master class levels). Five CMAs were assessed using 14 indices. Computer tests from the Vienna Test System were employed in the study. Results. It was shown that there were no significant differences in CMA levels between wrestlers and taekwon-do competitors. Wrestlers from higher sports classes outperformed competitors who possessed lower sports classes in the majority of CMA indices. Statistically significant differences were observed for simple reaction, movement coupling and high frequency of movements. Taekwon-do competitors at the international master sports class (IM) level scored better than athletes who were at national master class (NM) and first class (I) levels in spatial orientation, reaction time, movement coupling and high frequency of movements. Regardless of the type of combat sport, competitors demonstrated high individual differences in CMAs, which may indicate that a focus on coordination improvement could increase training effectiveness. Conclusions. Further research on identifying predominant CMAs in sportspeople at different levels of competition, particularly in those achieving significant sports successes may be conducted. Tests to thoroughly diagnose coordination should be employed in such investigations.

Martial arts represent one of the biggest groups among kinds of sports. Along with other kinds of sports, taekwon-do ITF has distinguished features, philosophical bases and their practical realization, structure and content of competition activity. The aim is to reveal prospects of research related to differentiation of physical training of athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF. Methods. Methods of theoretical analysis and academic and methodological references data generalization have been used. Data regarding the system of athletes training, formation of their physical, technical and tactical training in taekwon-do WTF, ITF and other martial arts have been analyzed. Results. A peculiar feature of martial arts is a wide range of technical and tactical techniques, increased requirements to their realization under conditions of competition activity, their spectacular nature, winner unpredictability, hard contact with opponents. In various academic references, it has been noted that physical training of athletes is the basis for various kinds of martial arts. To tackle issues of physical training of athletes in taekwon-do ITF it is advisable to use advanced methodological developments. Differentiation is one of them. Effectiveness of the use of various methodological variations of physical training differentiation has been confirmed and proven within practice of athletes training in the majority of sports: handball, rugby, sports orientation, volleyball, rowing. However, a significant volume of academic information related to application of physical training differentiation on the basis of indices of physical preparedness of martial- arts athletes has not been analyzed. Conclusions. On the basis of the existing contradiction between the need to improve physical training of athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF on the background of increasing competitiveness and lack of complex consideration of the components of individual physical preparedness, an urgent academic and practical objective of physical training differentiation of athletes aged 12-13 in taekwon-do ITF needs to be tackled.

This issue is especially important in the traditional version of taekwon-do, in which a single strike may reveal the winner. Six taekwon-do (International Taekwon-do Federation) athletes were asked to participate in this case study. Generally accepted criteria of sports technique biomechanical analysis were adhered to. The athletes executed a side kick three times (in Taekwon-do terminology referred to as yop chagi) in a way which they use the kick in board breaking. The obtained data were used to determine the mean velocity changes in the function of relative extension length of the kicking leg. The maximum knee and foot velocities in the Cartesian coordinate system were determined. The leg lifting time and the duration of kick execution as well as the maximum force which the standing foot exerted on the ground were also determined. On the basis of the obtained values, mean values and standard deviations were calculated. The correlation dependence (r=0.72) shows that greater knee velocity affects the velocity which the foot develops as well as the fact that the total time of kick execution depends on the velocity which the knee (r = -0.59) and the foot (r = -0.86) develop in the leg lifting phase. The average maximum speed was obtained at the length of the leg equal to 82% of the maximum length of the fully extended leg. This length can be considered the optimum value for achieving the maximum dynamics of the kick.

Introduction. A number of scientists have proven the positive effect of taekwon-Do I.T.F. on the physical state of people of all ages, the state of their musculoskeletal system. However, in the scientific literature there is no data on the effectiveness of taekwon-Do I.T.F. use in the programs of correction of foot arch (FA) disorders of young athletes. Similarly, no studies have been conducted on the effect of taekwon-Do I.T.F. exercises on the development of myofacsical kinematic chain (MFKC) of the lower limb and its role in the foot maintenance and correction in foot arch disorders. The purpose is to experimentally test the effectiveness of a comprehensive program for the foot arch disorders correction of young athletes by means of taekwon-Do I.T.F. Material and method. The following instrumental methods were used in the work: plantography (baropodograph using computer device “DIERS FAAMUS” (Germany)); electroneuromyography ("Neuro-EMG-Micro" made by "Neurosoft" (Russia)); photometry; myotonometry; formative consistent pedagogical experiment; methods of statistical data processing (Statistics 6.0 (StatSoft, USA)). Young athletes aged 7–8 with FA disorders and a normal foot took part in a 12-month formative experiment. Results. The value of the Friedland index, which characterizes the functional foot reserves, increased statistically significantly among EG1 young athletes who practiced according to the program developed by us, compared with those who were training according to the traditional program – by 6.48% against 3.85%, respectively. Conclusions. Analysis of FA morphological parameters of young athletes aged 7-8 years shows that the positive changes are statistically significantly more performed in young athletes who were training in the sports center "Taekwon-Do I.T.F." on a program of comprehensive correction, which is confirmed by FA changes.

The quality of life, including the quality of life connected with health covers coping with difficult emotions and the ability of fulfilling aims, despite their deconstructive effects. Constructive dealing with emotions, such as anxiety and anger (i.e. that are considered to have negative character) makes a very important aspect of the quality of one’s life. The process of growing up is, to a large extent learning to cope with difficult emotions. In this work we are concentrating on one of the aspects of the quality of life connected with health-related effects of systematic physical activity performance, such as taekwon-do. One of the very important reasons of a positive influence of practising martial arts (and other forms of physical activity) on the quality of life is a beneficial impact of such an activity on a widely-understood psychophysical skills, dealing with anger and better coping with anxiety. In the light of contemporary knowledge (and old sources) taekwon-do cannot only mean physical activity, though, undoubtedly, it is a very important, key aspect of this activity. In the paper we present the results of our own research concerning the ways of dealing with anger and anxiety by the girls practising taekwon-do (with the inclusion of the period of practise). In the light of the our research girls and women who have practised taekwon-do for over 2 years are more effective in coping with the situations of the choice between different options (to choose from) if each of them has its positive and negative consequences. Maturing girls and young women who practise taekwon-do have better abilities of constructive coping with stressful situations, including reaction for the situations causing anxiety.

Purpose This descriptive, non-experiment case study addresses the little-studied topic of martial arts tourism within the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK; i.e., North Korea) to determine if it is a form of non-entertainment tourism. Design/methodology/approach The current research focusses on a single subject (Singaporean female; 36 years of age (at time of interview); Taekwon-Do 4th degree black belt) who travelled to the DPRK three times to practice the Korean martial art Taekwon-Do. After the initial contact, a questionnaire was used and direct interviews via Skype and Facebook were performed. A broad thematic discourse, as well as analysis of the subject’s travel and practice notes and photographs from her stay in the DPRK, were also incorporated into the findings. Findings The subject developed new Taekwon-Do skills, which permitted her to obtain higher Taekwon-Do ranks as well as enriched her personality and changed certain conceptions. Self-realization and self-improvement through martial arts are the dominant motives of martial arts tourism. Therefore, the subject’s motivation confirms martial arts tourism can be a variation of non-entertainment tourism. Research limitations/implications This research is hindered by the standard case study limitations: it is difficult to generalize this study’s results to the wider DPRK population, the interviewee’s and researchers’ subjective feelings may have influenced the findings, and selection bias is definitely a factor because of the study’s population being a single female of non-DPRK origin. Originality/value As one of the first studies on DPRK martial arts tourism and practice, this research examines where research on the DPRK and martial arts tourism intersect. It is thusly unique in providing new insights into the DPRK’s intention for its tourism industry, as well as Taekwon-Do, arguably its most marketable cultural asset.

This study proposed a convergence plan for Taekwon-gymnastics with the 4th industrial revolution technology by conducting text analysis using literature research and group focus research methods to find out how the 4th industrial revolution technology can be applied to taekwondo in preparation for the infectious disease pandemic. First, in constructing Taekwon-gymnastics works, competition rules, Taekwondo poomsae, characteristics of trainees, physical strength elements, dance music of various genres, popular dance movements, and data of all works should be collected and entered into artificial intelligence to develop and distribute standardized works. Second, artificial intelligence should develop an artificial intelligence guidance system by identifying the wrong movements or beats of Taekwon- gymnastics trainees by themselves and giving feedback to the trainees. Third, data on the training results of trainees using the Internet of Things can be collected and used for trainee management. Fourth, it is necessary to develop programs on the theme of Taekwon-gymnastics, such as virtual reality in the form of games and making one's own works in games, to provide feedback as well as induce interest of trainees. In the era of the infectious disease pandemic, changes in training methods using core technologies of the 4th Industrial Revolution will be essential in view of the times, and efforts to change this trend in a positive direction are needed.

This report on that conference intends to disseminate the speakers’ findings to a wider audience and establish new directions for academic discussions on International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) Taekwon-Do. This conference also illuminated some problems with Taekwondo literature; namely that ITF literature is greatly overshadowed by research on its Olympic counterpart. Additionally, it seems that the only ROK Taekwondo governing body interested in reestablishing General Choi’s legacy is the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation. Nevertheless, even though he was a taboo topic in the ROK a decade ago, the political climate in the ROK has changed and General Choi’s legacy is re-emerging slowly.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between sense of coherence and the level of health behavior among men and women who train Taekwon-Do. The research encompassed 121 (69 men and 53 women) Taekwon-Do athletes. The gauging was conducted by means of standardized tools in the field of health psychology: the Questionnaire of Life Orientation, the Pain Strategies Questionnaire and the Health Behavior Inventory. The registered variables were subjected to typical descriptive analysis. Multiple regression analysis was performed. The adjustment of the regression model was checked by ANOVA. The co-dependency between the variables was defined as Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The level of statistical significance was established at p < 0.05. The results of the sense of coherence are higher for men (36.83 ± 12.45) than women (33.17 ± 10.60). Diverting attention away from feelings and thoughts of pain is strongly correlated with reinterpreting pain sensations (r = 0.75) and is moderately correlated with the behavioral strategy as well as increased behavioral activity (r = 0.46). Constructive mobilization under pressure shows compatibility with resourcefulness (r = 0.44), comprehensibility (r = 0.39) and meaningfulness (r = 0.46). Sex differentiates the intensity of constructive mobilization to act under the impact of stress according to the subjective evaluation of both male and female Taekwon-Do fighters. The intensity of healthy behavior amongst women and men who practice Taekwon-Do differs. In the case of women, the value of the global indicator of healthy behavior was higher than in the case of men. This strategy defined as catastrophizing turned out to be commensurate in a negative way with all the three elements of the sense of coherence. Catastrophizing correlates negatively with the intensity of constructive mobilization for action under stress.

This class is for 2 hours/ week for 4 weeks. The program covers the contents of fetal growth and development, including their corresponding ability, the importance of the uterine environment, sharing the motive and purpose of pregnancy, and sharing experiences about pregnancy,Sharing of prejudices against delivery, training of maternal-fetal interaction, understanding delivery, relaxation breathing techniques, maternity exercises, writing letters or prayers to the baby, and declaration of loving the baby. This study took place from March 4th to June 15th, 2000, in a university hospital and community care center, and was done with a pretest-posttest design. It involved 55 pregnant women who were within 32-36 weeks of pregnancy and who agreed to participate in this study. Data was measured twice by self-report using the Cranley's Maternal-fetal Attachment Scale (MFAS, 1981) and the Shin's (1997) Self Efficacy for Delivery Scale at the beginning and at the completion of the class. Data was analyzed by SAS. The study results were:1. The score of maternal-fetal attachment was significantly increased after the Taekyo perspective prenatal class than before the class. (t = 7.389, p = 0.000) 2. The score of self efficacy for delivery was significantly increased after the Taekyo perspective prenatal class than before the class. (t = 8.885, p = 0.000) The above results proved that the present Taekyo perspective prenatal education program was effective in increasing maternal-infant attachment and self-efficacy for delivery. Therefore, it is concluded that the existing prenatal class should include Taekyo perspective elements. However, further study is needed to compare the effects with preexisting prenatal classes.

In the postwar 1960s, Kono Taeko (1926-2015) debuted with shocking stories of alienated modern women whose fantasies of pleasure in sadistic violence, masochism, and pederasty belied their otherwise routine exterior worlds. Kono's "Todder-Hunting" (Yojigari, 1961) remains most well known and representative but other works, including the Akutagawa Award-winning "Crabs" (Kani, 1963) that appeared in Lucy North's translated collection, cemented Kono's reputation and her reception in English as a writer of disturbing psychosexual fantasy. If critics read history into her work at all, it would be in order to note how Kono's heroines, like their author, emerged with such violent and repressed force on the literary scene precisely because of an unsustainable historical exclusion of women's voices. While this is partially true, it does not tell the whole story. This essay argues that Kono Taeko's fictional world can best be understood by also taking into account her reputation in Japan as a member of the senchuha, or wartime generation. In short, her wartime experiences in Osaka would go on to shape her choice of career and the kind of fiction she would later write. This essay analyzes in depth "Behind Bars" (Hei no naka, 1962), one of the few explicitly autobiographical works published by Kono around the same time as "Toddler Hunting," in order to contend that her wartime experiences of factory mobilization and terrifying daily bombing on the so-called "home front" would later shape her stories of violent gender relations, oppressive household institutions (ie seido), and lost childhood. Superimposing the irrational realities of wartime structures over fantasies of normal domestic life in "Behind Bars," Kono found a productive locus of distortion to motivate much of her later fiction.

Background: The aim of this paper is to expand the knowledge on the subject matter of the relations between behavior that is geared towards health and the feeling of effectiveness in the context of martial arts tourism in the form of Taekwon-do training summer camps. Method: The research encompassed 58 people (32 men and 26 women) who train Taekwon-do (ITF) (aged: 26.36 ± 8.97; scope: 18–45 years of age). The measurement of the feeling of effectiveness and healthy behavior was conducted by means of standardized tools, including the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Results: The analyzed fighters who participated in the research in the majority of the sports meetings declared a higher level of the feeling of effectiveness (p < 0.001). Through cluster analysis emerged two groups, with a significant difference between self-efficacy (mean value of 20.05 points in contrast to 33.93 points in the second group). The group with higher psychological indices values attended a higher amount of summer camps during their practice history (at least two camps attended in the second cluster). Conclusion: Sports tourism connected with martial arts, as exemplified by training groups (professionally organized training camps) of Taekwon-do (ITF), is connected with the increased feeling of personal effectiveness, while also serving the enhancement of psycho-physical health, well-being, and the development of social skills.

SummaryStudy aim: The aim of the current study is to reveal the characteristics of punch techniques applied in taekwon-do.Material and methods: The skill quantification was performed on 10 taekwon-do ITF competitors. During the test, they were asked to perform straight punches using both the preferred and the non-preferred fist into the air (i.e. without a physical target) in the lateral position employing both traditional and sport style. Applying reflective markers on fists, the punching kinematic data were collected in the HML (Human Motion Lab). For data analyses, the average and standard deviation of duration, velocity and acceleration were used. The Mann-Whitney U test was applied to determine possible differences (p < 0.05) between the dominant fist and non-dominant fist as well as between the traditional and sport punch. Results: The results revealed that the sport punch is notably faster (shorter punch duration) with a higher acceleration than the traditional one. There is no significant difference between the preferred and non-preferred fist. The results could suggest that the left and right straight punches during taekwon-do training sessions are equally developed. However, the different goals of the punch techniques, i.e. the traditional punch for generating power and the sport punch for quickness, cause significant differences (p < 0.01) in action time. Conclusion: The results imply that a trade-off strategy may play a role in a match, namely a powerful punch for a possible final win or a quick punch for point collection.

Material and methods: 102 women (mean age 25.2 years, body mass 62.2 kg, body height 168.3 cm) practising competitive ITF (International Taekwon-Do Federation) taekwon-do (n = 22), Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) (n = 15), football (n = 35) and basketball (n = 30) participated in the study. The assessment tool was the FMS test, comprising 7 movement patterns scored on a scale of 0–3. Results: The studied female athletes earned medium scores. Women practising combat sports scored generally higher in the FMS test, although the difference was not significant (combat sports – mean value 15.57 ± 2.39, team sports – mean value 14.72 ± 1.93, difference – p = 0.07). Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the second (hurdle step) and the fifth pattern (active straight leg raise – ASLR). The aggregated FMS results of female taekwon-do (15.77) and BJJ athletes (15.22) were similar. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in one pattern (ASLR). Women practising football (14.77) and basketball (14.67) attained a similar level of results in the test. Statistically significant differences were noted in two trials: footballers scored higher in the ASLR task (p < 0.05), and basketball players scored higher in rotary stability (p < 0.01). Conclusion: A statistically significant result in the FMS test was obtained by martial arts athletes, which may point to a higher level of functional movement, which may be a result of more universal training.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of attracting a mega-sport facility on the development of a small town. As a case study, we took a close look at the changes occurring since Muju County attracted Taekwondowon in 2014 and its significance to urban development and city branding. Data were collected by individual interviews with five research participants engaged in the business and the regional development of Taekwondowon and the Muju County Office (MCO). As a result, the study produced the following outcomes: First, MCO has established an administrative and legal system to actively utilize Taekwondowon and spur urban development. Second, the regional ripple effects include the local economic consumption by the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation (TPF), purchasing local agricultural products by the TPF, and increasing income for local lodging and catering businesses generated by taekwondo events held at Taekwondowon. Third, and most importantly, Muju has been pursuing a transformation into a sustainable international tourism city by becoming the mecca for taekwondo. To achieve this goal, Taekwondowon has been taking some existing functions of Kukkiwon, and the MCO constructed the Taekwon Village, Taekwon Park, and Taekwon V Land throughout Muju. In addition, the social overhead capital necessary for a tourist destination, such as road expansion and a new express bus system between the international airport and Muju, has been reinforced. Furthermore, various tourism products using Taekwondowon have been provided to continue its city branding. In summary, it was found that Taekwondowon has played a pivotal role in Muju’s journey toward achieving sustainable development as the mecca for taekwondo.

AbstractIntroduction. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that different approaches to the training process in the selfdefense and martial arts, reflected the hierarchical structure of the basic activities of a coach. Materials and methods. Opinions of 159 trainers with many years of experience in capoeira (n=16), taekwon-do ITF version (n=95) and wrestling (n=48) were collected. Diagnostic survey method was used, and the instrument was a questionnaire developed by Tumanian [7] and modified by Januszewski and Sterkowicz [8]. Results. Capoeira and wrestling trainers did not agree as to the status of any of the 20 coach's activities. The biggest differences were in assessing the significance of instructing trainees during competitions, developing planning process and first aid giving. Rsp ranks correlation coefficient = 0.66, p<0.01. Capoeira and taekwon-do coaches had consistent opinions in case of five activities. The largest differences occurred in terms of organizing and judging the competition and instructing trainees during competitions. Rsp rank correlation coefficient = 0.50, p<0.05. The opinions of taekwon-do and wrestling coaches were in line for two activities and the two activities were given different ranks. Rsp rank correlation coefficient = 0.71, p<0.001. Conclusions. Managing technical and physical preparation of trainees, as well as their training process and body control, were the most important activities of a coach in three combat variations. Scientific-methodical research was considered unimportant. None of the surveyed coaches agreed with others on the importance of professional activities, and their rank does not differentiate representatives of the three types of combat.

The aim of this study is to extend the knowledge of selected aspect of of taekwon-do (martial art) for health in the context of central nervous system plasticity. This paper aims at presenting the results of the research and concepts that contribute to the understanding of the value of development and teaching of taekwon-do and other martial arts in the context of the notion of contact. The research data indicate that there are substantial arguments that allow us to state that participation in martial arts is strictly connected with an integrated activity in different fields of child’s and adolescent’s development. In the case of adults (included patients with musculoskeletal chronic pain) it supports the functioning of the nervous system. Based on the research approach specified as neuroscience, one can interpret the research reports present in literature, that indicate positive changes in particular brain structures, involved, among others, in the ability to concentrate, as a result of this training.

Abstract Introduction. The human foot is an important and individual static-dynamic part of the movement apparatus. Physical activity is one of the many factors which has an impact on the arch of the foot, and specific sporting disciplines affect the morphological construction and active efficiency of the foot to differing degrees. The aim of this study was to evaluate the foot-arches of competitors training in the disciplines of athletics, handball, volleyball and taekwon-do, and to demonstrate the differences in the arching of the foot, depending on the discipline of the participant. Material and methods. Observation of a group of 46 student-competitors at the sports club of the Academic Sports Association (ASA) of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Biała Podlaska, training in handball, volleyball, athletics and taekwon-do. Using information from plantograms, obtained using a podoscope, the following were analyzed: Wejsflog's indicator, the position of the big toe (hallux) - angle γ; theposition of toe V - angle β;the position of the heel - angle α. Results. The values given by Wejsflog's indicator show the presence of an asymmetry in the arch of the right foot compared to that of the left foot. The reason for this, according to Demczuk-Włodarczyk and Biec [1] may be the type of surface on which training is conducted. The authors demonstrate that fallen arches are less common in practitioners of taekwon-do, who usually train on an elastic mat, which confirms the results of earlier research conducted on competitors at the Academic Sports Association of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport in Biała Podlaska. Conclusions. The occurrence of an abnormal formation of the arches that make up the arch of the foot, and of asymmetry in the arch between the left and right feet observed in the sample, shows the necessity of devoting greater attention to compensatory exercises that strengthen the short muscles of the foot and the muscles of the calf in the training process, in order to make up for frequently unbalanced strain.
