<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Having examined famous surveyors and surveys from all over the world it is not often that I have encountered a country that was so proud of one of its legendary surveyors that they struck a postage stamp to him for his survey work. However, I was absolutely delighted when I discovered that the Japanese nation had dedicated an 80 yen postage stamp to their hero surveyor Ino Tadataka who had been responsible for surveying the country to provide the details for the first accurate map of its territory in 1821. Even though this large chart was published posthumously he is rightly celebrated as the genius behind this masterpiece of cartography having spent the last seventeen (17) years of his life personally walking and measuring the entirety of its coastal boundaries from the advanced age of 55 years.</p><p>Within this paper I will trace the life of this great man highlighting the Edo Period of Japanese history along with the techniques and surveying equipment utilized by Ino and his survey teams to collect the measurements required to produce the first accurate delineation of the coasts of their nation. Along the way we will visit Ino’s house and various museums and statue monuments honouring this surveying hero and his truly remarkable achievements in precise mapping during a time before GPS, drone and aerial photogrammetry and remote sensing from satellites.</p>

The history of modern maps in Japan begins with the Japan maps (called INŌ’s maps) prepared by Tadataka Inō after he thoroughly surveyed the whole of Japan around 200 years ago. The purpose of this study was to investigate the precision degree of INŌ’s Tokyo map by overlaying it with present maps and analyzing the map style (map projection, map scale, etc.). Specifically, we quantitatively examined the spatial distortion of INŌ’s maps through comparisons with the present map using GIS (geographic information system), a spatial analysis tool. Furthermore, by examining various factors that caused the positional gap and distortion of features, we explored the actual situation of surveying in that age from a geographical viewpoint. As a result of the analysis, a particular spatial regularity was confirmed in the positional gaps with the present map. We found that INŌ’s Tokyo map had considerably high precision. The causes of positional gaps from the present map were related not only to natural conditions, such as areas and land but also to social and cultural phenomena.

The new technique of measuring frequency by optical lattice clocks now approaches to the relative precision of [Formula: see text]. We propose to place such precise clocks in space and to use Doppler tracking method for detecting low-frequency gravitational wave below 1[Formula: see text]Hz. Our idea is to locate three spacecrafts at one A.U. distance (say at L1, L4 and L5 of the Sun–Earth orbit), and apply the Doppler tracking method by communicating “the time” each other. Applying the current available technologies, we obtain the sensitivity for gravitational wave with third- or fourth-order improvement ([Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] level in [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]Hz) than that of Cassini spacecraft in 2001. This sensitivity enables us to observe black hole (BH) mergers of their mass greater than [Formula: see text] in the cosmological scale. Based on the hierarchical growth model of BHs in galaxies, we estimate the event rate of detection will be 20–50 a year. We nickname “INO” (Interplanetary Network of Optical Lattice Clocks) for this system, named after Tadataka Ino (1745–1818), a Japanese astronomer, cartographer, and geodesist.

Inoh’s team carried out the survey did not apply the correction of magnetic declination. Because before his survey, Inoh tried to observe magnetic declination in Edo (Tokyo) was nearly zero. Inoh conducted the survey on the assumption that the influence of magnetic declination to survey map of Japan is at least. The surveyed region extends from North eastern coast of Hokkaido Island to Yakushima Island in western Japan. We start analysis, check the outline of reference point and target points from the name or the description of reference point and target points, the survey azimuth recorded in Santou-Houi-Ki, and Inoh’s survey diary, Inoh’s maps, modern survey map, today’s survey map or local source books. We execute interdisciplinary and simultaneous analysis of geomagnetic declination, real azimuth, precise position of the survey execution point and target points (latitude and longitude less than 0.1 second). And add the historical importance of each precise position of survey reference point. Calculate backward the precise position of survey reference point, where the value of magnetic declination, subtracting the magnetic survey azimuth from the true azimuth to any target points is similar or approximate. We cannot read the precise content of national treasure Santou-Houi-Ki without this interdisciplinary simultaneous analysis. We tried to analysis at 227 points in Japanese archipelago, the distribution of magnetic declination and precise position of the survey reference points and target points in early 19 century’s Japan are gradually elucidated. When we compare the analysis of declination from Santou-Houi-Ki to Noaa’s Historical Declination Viewer, NOAA’s progress of declination west is always 5 to 6 years late than the analysis of Santou-Houi-Ki. And differences are more remarkable in western Japan. We must supply the analysis data from Santou-Houi-Ki to NOAA.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This presentation discusses the regional changes quantitatively in the 200 years through the overlay analysis of the present map and the INŌ’s map made by Tadataka INO in 1821 (Figure 1). INO surveyed the coastline and major roads on foot. He investigated not only survey lines, but also various geographic information such as rivers, lakes, mountains, village names, castles, temples, administrative boundaries, etc. Visualizing all of the 214 sheets of the INŌ’s large-scale map with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), we can analyse the national land condition seamlessly at the end of the Edo era.</p><p>Methodological point of view, we have serious problems including the scale, projection, identification of geographic features and so on, when we compare the old map with the present. In this connection, digitalizing the INŌ’s map as the GIS data is very useful to examine the spatial transformation scientifically during the 200 years. The digital INŌ’s map was constructed by employing the geo-reference function of GIS with the triangulation method. The survey line was converted into the line feature of vector data, and the place names were converted into the point feature of raster data. The distance of the survey line was measured by GIS-based geometric operation.</p><p>We obtained the following findings. The distributions of villages, ports, and facilities in western Japan were denser than those in eastern Japan in the 19th century. This was caused not only by the difference in natural environment and landform but also by socioeconomic factors including the locations of the castle towns and industrial activities. The regional structure has been dramatically transformed by the modernization of the political system, transportation system, and industrial development in reclaimed areas (Figure 2). It is concluded that most parts of changes in regional characteristics have been attained by overcoming the natural constraints. However, the difference in the political system has also been influential to the formation of the present regional system.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> ‘Kaisei Nihon Yochi Rotei Zenzu’ by Sekisui Nagakubo, measuring around 83&amp;thinsp;&amp;times;&amp;thinsp;134&amp;thinsp;cm and traditionally referred to as ‘Sekisui-zu’, is the earliest woodblock-printed map of Japan employing lines of longitude and latitude. Sekisui-zu is much more detailed than traditional maps like those of Ryūsen Ishikawa, with 4200 place names in the first edition compared with Ryūsen’s 900. Most of the first editions are hand-coloured in nine hues (presumably Yamato-e pigments), seven of which distinguish different regions. Sekisui-zu is still not a survey map but nevertheless acts with great geographical accuracy as a route map. This map of Japan was published a full 30 years in advance of the first surveyed manuscript map, by Tadataka Ino.</p><p>The first edition bears the printed date of ‘1779’ but, according to Sekisui`s documents, etc. its actual publication was in the next year. Sekisui scrutinised not only former maps and documents but also travellers’ communications so vigorously that he revised his map time and time again. The first edition alone was revised at least twelve times by replacing the parts of woodblock with implants of more accurate ones, by the time the second edition of complete replacement of wood block was released in 1791. Most notable replacement was at the north end of Honshu, east part of Kanto province and east part of the Seto Inland Sea. The woodblock used to print the area between the Hitachi and Musashi prefectures was also replaced more than three times, as it seems to have become impossible to re-carve.</p><p>The second edition was fully revised and contains more complex information, for example with nearly 6000 place names, most of which had been corrected by the first publication. This was revised only (at least) three times, mainly around the Izu Islands in a later issue. This edition was hand-colored in five different hues for each region. This was Sekisui’s last edition and three other editions, mostly colour printed, were released posthumously in 1811, 1834, and 1841. For eighty years of the late Edo period, Sekisui`s ‘Kaisei Nihon Yochi Rotei Zenzu’ was accepted as the definitive map of Japan.<p>

Abstract Hypoxia is a feature of the pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA). Although gemcitabine (GEM) is widely used in chemotherapy for PDA, drug resistance restricts its clinical effectiveness. We have found that hypoxia contributes to chemoresistance, however the mechanism is still unclear. The aim of this study is to clarify the mechanism and to develop a new therapeutic strategy. First, we examined the effect of hypoxia to GEM sensitivity, stemness and energy metabolism in three human pancreatic ductal carcinoma cell lines. The inhibition rate by GEM was lower under CoCl2-induced chemical hypoxia than normoxia. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) after GEM was increased under normoxia but not under hypoxia. Flux analysis showed that both oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and glycolysis were suppressed under hypoxia, indicating a quiescent state. Next, we investigated the relationship between hypoxia and stemness. Hypoxia increased stem cell markers mRNA (C-Myc, Oct-3/4, CD24, CD44, CD133) expression and tumorsphere formation efficiency (TFE). In addition, hypoxia and GEM administration reduced sphere size but increased the number of spheres and TFE. This indicated that hypoxia and GEM suppressed proliferation, however promoted stemness. Second, to examine the mechanism of GEM resistance, we established two GEM-resistant cell lines from human PDA cells by continuous treatment with GEM and CoCl2-induced chemical hypoxia. One resistant cell line possessed reduced OXPHOS and decreased mitochondrial ROS levels, while the other resistant cell line possessed increased stemness. In both cell lines, ethidium bromide-stained mitochondrial DNA levels decreased, suggesting mitochondrial DNA damage. In addition, tetramethylrhodamine-stained mitochondrial membrane potential levels decreased, suggesting mitochondrial impairment. This indicated that long hypoxia and treatment with GEM induced mitochondrial impairment and acquisition of stemness, causing chemoresistance. We further investigated the effect of lauric acid (LAA), a medium-chain fatty acid, on GEM resistance. We have previously reported that LAA causes reprogramming of energy metabolism and induces cell death in cancer cells. Treatment with LAA restored GEM sensitivity in both GEM-resistant cell lines. Flux analysis showed that both OXPHOS and glycolysis were promoted, indicating displacement from quiescent state by LAA. These results suggest that decreased energy production, decreased mitochondrial ROS levels, and increased stemness associated with mitochondrial damage caused by GEM lead to GEM resistance, and that hypoxia may promote this process. Furthermore, forced activation of OXPHOS by LAA could be a tool to overcome GEM resistance.
