Abstract As a pilot study of magnetism in Y dwarfs, we have observed the three known infrared variable Y dwarfs WISE J085510.83−071442.5, WISE J140518.40+553421.4, and WISEP J173835.53+273258.9 with the NSF’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array in the 4–8 GHz frequency range. The aim was to investigate the presence of non-bursting quiescent radio emission as a proxy for highly circularly polarized radio emission associated with large-scale auroral currents. Measurements of magnetic fields on Y dwarfs may be possible by observing auroral radio emission, and such measurements are essential for constraining fully convective magnetic dynamo models. We do not detect any pulsed or quiescent radio emission, down to rms noise levels of 7.2 µJy for WISE J085510.83−071442.5, 2.2 µJy for WISE J140518.40+553421.4, and 3.2 µJy for WISEP J173835.53+273258.9. The fractional detection rate of radio emission from T dwarfs is ∼10 per cent suggesting that a much larger sample of deep observations of Y dwarfs is needed to rule out radio emission in the Y dwarf population. We discuss a framework that uses an empirical relationship between the auroral tracer Hα emission and quiescent radio emission to identify brown-dwarf auroral candidates. Finally, we discuss the implications that Y dwarf radio detections and non-detections can have for developing a picture of brown dwarf magnetism and auroral activity.

Surra is one of the fatal diseases of the horse caused by Trypanosoma evansi. The disease is characterized by fever, progressive emaciation, anemia, subcutaneous edema, nervous signs, and death. To know the epidemiological status of surra in horses, retrospective information was retrieved by scrutinizing the data bank of the Veterinary Clinical Complex, JAU, Junagadh for three years (2013-15) covering 633 equine cases. According to symptoms, the incidence of surra was 10.64% (28/263) among medicinal cases, of which 57.14% (16/28) had shown signs of hemoprotozoon disease and 50.00% (8/16) were confirmed to have Trypanosoma evansi on blood smear examinations. Overall the clinical prevalence of T. evansi was 2.52% of the total equine cases (16/633). The age-wise incidence was higher in adult horses (68.75%) followed by yearling (25.00%) and foal (6.25%). The breed-wise incidence of T. evansi was higher in Kathiawari breed (68.75%) followed in descending order in non-descript (18.75 %) and Marwari breed (12.50%). The incidence was higher in female (68.75%) than the male. The season-wise prevalence rate of T. evansi was higher in monsoon (July-October) (75.00%) than winter season (25.00%), while no case was observed in summer.

Abstract Particle tracking is a computationally advantageous and fast scheme to determine travel times and trajectories in subsurface hydrology. Accurate particle tracking requires element-wise mass-conservative, conforming velocity fields. This condition is not fulfilled by the standard linear Galerkin finite element method (FEM). We present a projection, which maps a non-conforming, element-wise given velocity field, computed on triangles and tetrahedra, onto a conforming velocity field in lowest-order Raviart-Thomas-Nédélec ($\mathcal {RTN}_{0}$ R T N 0 ) space, which meets the requirements of accurate particle tracking. The projection is based on minimizing the difference in the hydraulic gradients at the element centroids between the standard FEM solution and the hydraulic gradients consistent with the $\mathcal {RTN}_{0}$ R T N 0 velocity field imposing element-wise mass conservation. Using the conforming velocity field in $\mathcal {RTN}_{0}$ R T N 0 space on triangles and tetrahedra, we present semi-analytical particle tracking methods for divergent and non-divergent flow. We compare the results with those obtained by a cell-centered finite volume method defined for the same elements, and a test case considering hydraulic anisotropy to an analytical solution. The velocity fields and associated particle trajectories based on the projection of the standard FEM solution are comparable to those resulting from the finite volume method, but the projected fields are smoother within zones of piecewise uniform hydraulic conductivity. While the $\mathcal {RTN}_{0}$ R T N 0 -projected standard FEM solution is thus more accurate, the computational costs of the cell-centered finite volume approach are considerably smaller.

AbstractIn this paper, we derive explicit formulas for the first-passage probabilities of the process S(t) = W(t) − W(t + 1), where W(t) is the Brownian motion, for linear and piece-wise linear barriers on arbitrary intervals [0,T]. Previously, explicit formulas for the first-passage probabilities of this process were known only for the cases of a constant barrier or T ≤ 1. The first-passage probabilities results are used to derive explicit formulas for the power of a familiar test for change-point detection in the Wiener process.

Results of an experimental investigation related to near-field wing tip vortices are presented. The measurements were carried out using a PIV-system in T-1K wind tunnel of KNRTU-KAI. Q-criterion and crosssectional lines method were used to determine vortex core locations, which showed a good agreement. It is shown that the circulation of tip vortices remains constant at low to moderate angles of attack, and decreases in the stream-wise direction for higher angles of attack. It is also shown that the vortex core radius increases in the stream-wise direction, taking larger values at higher angles of attack.

Background Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique that reflects the Brownian motion of water molecules constrained within brain tissue. Fractional anisotropy (FA) is one of the most commonly measured DTI parameters, and can be applied to quantitative analysis of white matter as tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) and voxel-wise analysis. Purpose To show an association between metallic implants and the results of statistical analysis (voxel-wise group comparison and TBSS) for fractional anisotropy (FA) mapping, in DTI of healthy adults. Material and Methods Sixteen healthy volunteers were scanned with 3-Tesla MRI. A magnetic keeper type of dental implant was used as the metallic implant. DTI was acquired three times in each participant: (i) without a magnetic keeper (FAnon1); (ii) with a magnetic keeper (FAimp); and (iii) without a magnetic keeper (FAnon2) as reproducibility of FAnon1. Group comparisons with paired t-test were performed as FAnon1 vs. FAnon2, and as FAnon1 vs. FAimp. Results Regions of significantly reduced and increased local FA values were revealed by voxel-wise group comparison analysis (a P value of less than 0.05, corrected with family-wise error), but not by TBSS. Conclusion Metallic implants existing outside the field of view produce artifacts that affect the statistical analysis (voxel-wise group comparisons) for FA mapping. When statistical analysis for FA mapping is conducted by researchers, it is important to pay attention to any dental implants present in the mouths of the participants.

Lithium extraction remains a challenge in the hydrometallurgy process due to its economic value and maldistribution sources. Employing calix[4]arene derivatives in solvent extraction techniques results in high selectivity and extraction capability, but a slow extraction rate. The slow kinetics of batch-wise extraction can be drastically accelerated by using a T-type microreactor system. Therefore, a combination of calix[4]arene and a microreactor system serves as an ideal platform for efficient lithium extraction. In this work, the fluid dynamics of lithium extraction using a monoacetic acid calix[4]arene derivative in a T-type microreactor system were studied. Increasing the O/A ratio increases the average length, surface area, and volume of the organic droplets, but decreases the specific surface area. In contrast, increasing the Reynolds number decreases the average length, surface area, and volume of the organic droplets, but increases the specific surface area. It was found that shorter diffusion distance, larger specific surface area, and faster vortex velocity were the factors that play the most pivotal roles in achieving great extraction rate enhancement in T-type microreactor systems compared to batch-wise systems. These findings represent an important new concept in the study of the fluid dynamics of lithium extraction using monoacetic acid calix[4]arene derivatives in T-type microreactor systems.

ABSTRACT Context: The inferior pedicle, Wise-pattern reduction mammaplasty is the most popular technique for breast reduction because of its reproducible results and reliability. However, complication rates in super obese patients or patients receiving large volume reductions are high, ranging from 35 to 78%. These complications include delayed healing, infection, seroma, nipple-areolar complex necrosis, fat necrosis and development of hypertrophic scars. Aims: This study aimed to determine whether a modification to the standard Wise-pattern reduction technique, an expanded inframammary fold skin triangle, produces improved outcomes in high-risk large volume breast reduction patients. We report that this modification leads to improved outcomes by decreasing wound complications and improving aesthetic appearance. Settings and Design: Twenty-two patients received the inferior pedicle Wise-pattern reduction mammaplasty, which was modified to include an 8 cm wide inferior pedicle. This pedicle was de-epithelialized and an 8 Χ 3 cm 2 triangle of skin was preserved at the inferior base to reduce tension at the triple point, inverted T-closure. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review was performed on all patients who underwent reduction mammaplasty with the expanded inframammary fold (eIMF) technique as well as all patients who received the standard wise pattern technique. Statistical Analysis Used: A student t-test was performed for both reduction populations using SPSS software package. Statistical significance was defined as P < 0.05. Results: The average patient age was 32.25 years old (range 18-59), average BMI was 35.0, and average tissue mass removed per breast was 1378.39 g. The modified technique was found to produce a statistically significant (P < 0.05) increase in the amount of breast tissue removed (693.96 g increase in the left and 571.21 g in the right) as well as a statistically significant (P < 0.05) reduction in dehiscence (75% reduction) and post-operative infection (44.10%). Conclusions: This method is an easily reproducible and reliable technique that produces a favourable cosmetic outcome with acceptable, sustainable results in high-risk reductions in obese patients.

Conventional statistical model for assessing test-retest reliability of questionnaire is to compare composite scores of matched subtests or items between periods. Current study examined test-retest reliability in terms of both subtest and item wise comparison through paired t-test statistics. Data were collected from 72 students twice within 8 months intervals using reading motivation questionnaire (Dutta Roy, 2003). The questionnaire includes 3 intrinsic (rApp, rKnow,rAch) and 4 extrinsic (rAes, rRecog, rAff and rHarm) reading motivation subtests. Finding inconsistency between both subtest and item wise comparison, I propose a model of clustering items between periods. Hierarchical clustering with complete linkage shows that more than 55% of both test and retest items are assembled in the primary cluster suggesting high test retest reliability among 6 reading motivation variables.

We consider dynamical systems of N particles confined in domains of volume V with pair-wise short range interaction. We propose a new definition of the limiting distribution of Lyapunov Spectrum according to which the thermodynamical limit transition is taken before the limit t→∞. The main result proven under rather general conditions gives the existence of this modified limiting distribution of Lyapunov Spectrum.

Annotation:
A simplified decoding algorithm for turbo trellis-coded modulation (T-TCM) is proposed, which is easy to implement in hardware. The algorithm exploits a new piece-wise function to replace the logarithmic term of the Jacobian logarithm based on the MacLaurin Series. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can archive log-MAP-similar decoding performance with a much lower computational complexity. It can reduce about 40% of calculation in contrast to the improved MAX-Log-MAP.
