The recent development of modern intelligent transport systems has caused a major innovation in the organization and management of traffic and enabled a pronounced integration of new data on the transport phenomena and processes. The goal of the study is to analyse the daily mobility rhythms in an urban environment through data from intelligent transport systems. To study daily mobility rhythms, we make use of hitherto unutilized data from inductive loops and strategic traffic detectors (parts of the ITS) within the urban area of České Budějovice, Czechia. We particularly focus on the assessment of overall daily mobility rhythms and the daily rhythms of individual locations within the urban area with a goal to reveal the main conformities and differences. The research has attained two key results. It was discovered that daily mobility rhythms differ especially in individual types of vehicles (cars, medium vehicles, and long vehicles). In the assessment of spatial differences in the daily rhythms of individual locations significant differences were revealed in the courses of daily mobility rhythms in the city centre, residential areas, and shopping areas.

Abstract Intelligent transport systems (ITS) are undoubtedly an opportunity for the sustainable development of smart cities today. ITS is based on advanced transport technologies that help minimise the emission of harmful substances to the environment. Smart mobility and ITS are related to the use of ICT. The implementation of technologically advanced ITS is associated with several benefits, barriers and difficulties. However, transport, ITS and smart mobility (as a component of a smart city) are indicated as the most desirable option for sustainable urban transport systems. The article aims to identify barriers related to the implementation of ITS in cities from the point of view of people responsible for the organisation of urban transport representing the local government of selected voivodship cities in Poland. The goal formulated in this way allowed to identify the following research question: what are the problems and barriers of implementing ITS in the city from the local government’s perspective? To achieve the paper’s aim, the author based their analysis on a qualitative technique of collecting empirical data. Ten individual in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives of local governments (vice-mayors and members of urban transport organisers) in voivodship cities, which represented six Polish macro-regions. Research results and findings indicate the main categories and subcategories of barriers related to the ITS implementation. The identified barriers are grouped into the following categories: economic, social, organisational, technological and legal. The contribution is twofold: first, in the presentation of the theoretical and practical barriers to ITS in juxtaposition; and second, in identifying the intelligent transportation impact, which affects the provision of being a smarter city. The findings can positively influence as important factors for local governments to focus on intelligent transport.

The well servicing industry is demanding technology solutions that continually improve safety and productivity performance. Through in-field experience, the Advantage Light Rig (ALR) has been developed, specifically designed to service existing coal seam gas (CSG) wells and install infrastructure in newly drilled wells, to significantly improve the safety and productivity performance of workover operations by reducing the time taken to deliver a workover from 5.5 to 2.5 days. Designed and built in Toowoomba, the ALR ‘factory-style’ rig has allowed additional efficiencies to be applied across operations from the training and capability of the staff who operate these rigs to the support operations that enable the rigs to perform, such as warehousing, workshop maintenance, transport, aviation, training and camp operations. In addition to improved rig technology and innovation, further cost efficiencies can be achieved by collecting real-time operational data. Using intelligent analytics to improve logistics management (rig and vehicle movements, workforce planning, supply chain) and asset utilisation (electronic tour reporting, engineering and maintenance, camp capacities) will reduce costs and improve services. New enabling technologies and innovations like the ALR (and the Advantage Light Rig Extra) and the intelligent analysis of real-time operational data help improve business performance by reconfiguring products and processes. Through a deliberate investment in innovation and by leveraging operational data, the resources industry will benefit from improved safety and productivity performance.

Vehicles can be used to facilitate humans in carrying out their daily activities. Motorized vehicles are divided into 3: land, sea, and air. Apart from the many benefits that can be obtained, motorized vehicles have dangers related to high-risk accidents. The highest cause of motorized vehicle accidents on land is road damage due to overload vehicles. Brake failure due to overload vehicles also contributes to vehicle accidents. This research aims to create an Internet of Things (IoT) based application to detect motorized vehicle load conditions. It was combined with several other technologies to produce a tool for detecting motor vehicle load conditions. The Extreme Programming Method is being used in this research. The Extreme Programming method is considered more suitable for completing this research because the communication with stakeholders is quite different. The Extreme Programming Method enables it to go back to the next step if discrepancies are encountered in making the system. The result of this research is an IoT-based tool called e-overload. It can detect vehicle loads, provide information for the drivers, and inform the results to related officers at the same time. E-overload tool will enable the drivers to get real-time information on the load on their vehicles. Officers will get additional evidence and the latest position of the vehicle to carry out actions against motorists who operate their vehicles with excessive loads.

The proposed ATM model constantly updates traffic signal schedules depending on traffic volume and estimated movements from nearby crossings. It significantly lowers traveling time by gradually moving automobiles across green signals and decreases traffic congestion by generating a better transition. The experiment outcomes reveal that the proposed ATM system significantly outperformed the conventional traffic-management strategy and will be a frontrunner for transportation planning in smart-city-based transport systems. The proposed ATM solution minimizes vehicle waiting times and congestion, reduces road accidents, and improves the overall journey experience.

Research on the provision of heterogeneous services in the field of intelligent transport is of great interest in the rapidly changing infrastructure of road transport. In particular, the availability of such services has increased through the use of wireless technologies and communication tools. The current development of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and the integration of intelligent transport platforms and service systems make it possible to significantly improve road safety and reduce the likelihood of road accidents. However, the delivery of mobile-smart services requires the development of a rather sophisticated infrastructure to support multicast services. The purpose of this scientific article is to analyze the data transmission capabilities for heterogeneous services while ensuring road safety. The paper deals with the tasks of evaluating the possibilities of integrating such mobile services into the infrastructure of motor vehicles. Measuring bandwidth by enabling multicast services on the base of Ad-hoc wireless networks becomes an important task. The demonstrated results illustrate the capabilities of wireless networks by simulating these services in a transport service generating environment. The paper demonstrates that high-quality heterogeneous services require new wireless network interaction protocols, such as a session initiation protocol (SIP), GPRS functionality, routing protocols, and channel access to provide a large number of supportive service components.

European societies today face many sustainability challenges including but not limited to youth unemployment, aging populations, climate change, pollution, sustainable energy and migration. These problems are especially evident in cities. The objectives of smart development and integrated planning in European cities have been presented in the Europe 2020 strategy. It assumes restoration of European cities through stimulating innovation. In the socio-economic dimension, this means supporting the development of intelligent cities, often referred to as Smart Cities. According to the Smart City definition it is a city with the ability to adapt to the changing socio-economic conditions. This feature is extremely important in times of constant change. Progressing urbanization, globalization, technology transfer to everyday life and dwindling natural capital are the reasons why urban development is increasingly dependent on such factors as advanced technologies or territorial capital, understood as the available material and immaterial resources that determine the functioning of a given area. One of the Smart City components is intelligent transport. Improving mobility, ensuring accessibility and decreasing traffic congestion are some of the greatest challenges facing smart cities today. To respond to these challenges many city planners are glancing at smart transport solutions to reduce congestion as well as to optimize the use of city public transport. The aim of this article is to identify the challenges faced by European cities nowadays, present transport as a component of the Smart City and show its role in implementing the Smart City concept. The author presents European actions in terms of city mobility and recognizes their role in attaining the 11th SDG. Particular attention is paid to cities of the new Member States. Some examples of activities undertaken and tools used by authorities of European cities will be cited as examples of good practices. An analysis of the conditions for the transferability of such a solution will be included in the article.

Interest in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has been increasingly growing in recent years, especially for purposes other than those for which they were initially used (civil and military purposes). Currently, in fact, they are used for advanced monitoring and control purposes, for 3D reconstructions of the territory and cultural heritage, and for freight transport. The problem in using these systems consists of the limited flight autonomy. In fact, commercially used drones, today, are sold with a set of batteries of limited duration which do not allow flights over large areas and, therefore, detailed surveys. The present work seeks to overcome these limitations by proposing an intelligent automatic charging system (Intelligent Charging Network) created using PC Engines Alix and an experimental drone prototype using a Raspberry Pi 3 and a Navio 2 module. At the same time, an efficient Intelligent Charging Network–drone communication system and a data transmission system are proposed, which allow images acquired by the drone to be transferred directly to the server used for data storage for their subsequent processing as well as the transmission of the flight plan from the QGroundControl application to the drone. The proposed system represents technological innovation in the field of drones with potential future developments linked to the implementation of sustainable drones.

Efficient information flow in an intelligent system is vital for effectively controlling the entire system. Currently, intelligent systems are used in many industries related to energy production, sustainable agriculture/transport, and intelligent building/cities. Information technology (IT) and information and communication technologies (ICT) play vital roles in introducing technical or technological innovation in these industries as well as establishing a collaborative network. Also, the digitization of existing systems has been quite effective at creating a sustainable global environment as it allows more efficient and well-balanced control of socio-economic factors. However, it has become clear that adopting an intelligent system to achieve innovation, sustainability, and safety may well depend on the quality of the algorithms to be used for that very system. Despite recent controversies, new and renewable energies are considered as a realistic alternative to fossil fuels, which have been integral to modern industries but are regarded as a cause of environmental or economic problems, not to mention their limited deposits. Therefore, since renewable energies will gradually replace existing energy sources but require more time to be fully available, it is essential to find a method of managing them in a fair and transparent way. The United States, Japan, and some European countries are attempting to achieve such a goal by utilizing a blockchain system, but the issues pertaining to its functionality, security, or efficiency have yet to be addressed. This study introduces a viable consensus algorithm (Hyper Delegation Proof of Randomness, or HDPoR algorithm) for blockchain and attempts to validate its parallel computing capability through simulations. This study also attempts to design an efficient but secure peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction service model for these energies for the future where blockchain-based systems will hold a key position in the digitalized world. As its main contribution, this study introduces an effective method of applying blockchain to a new and renewable energy transaction system by presenting a consensus algorithm that can improve its infrastructure and performance.

The growing demand for the transportation of goods and people has led to an increasing reliance on transportation infrastructure, which, in turn, subjects the pavements to high traffic volumes. In order to maintain adequate service and safety standards for users, it is essential to establish effective maintenance strategies that ensure the preservation of pavement conditions. As a result, emerging innovations in pavement surface inspection methods, surpassing traditional techniques in terms of inspection and data processing speed and accuracy, have garnered significant attention. One such groundbreaking innovation in inspection systems that has been tested and used in recent years to assess infrastructure condition is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This study aims to present a critical open-access literature review on the use of UAVs in the inspection of transportation infrastructure pavement in order to assess the type of equipment used, the technology involved, applicability conditions, data processing, and future evolution. The analysis of relevant literature suggests that the integration of intelligent technologies substantially enhances the accuracy of data collection and the detection of pavement distress. Furthermore, it is evident that most applications and research efforts are oriented towards exploring image processing techniques for the creation of 3D pavement models and distress detection and classification.

Information and communication technologies (ICT) which are transforming most areas develop non-linearly. Failure to take into account the nonlinear principles of complex dynamic systems hinders development of balanced innovation strategies. Companies and governments lose the ability to effectively respond to “grand challenges”. The linear approach does not allow covering a wide range of critical areas simultaneously in the scope of Foresight projects, prevents from applying an interdisciplinary approach to developing innovation strategies, correct risks assessment, and making informed decisions. The paper proposes a solution: management based on “cyber-physical systems” (CPS) built on dynamic complexity and nonlinearity principles. Such systems not only integrate computing and physical action but are embedded in everyday environment; they are more than the sum of multiple intelligent computing devices. CPS transforms into collective social systems, integrate information, energy, and material flows, and adapt to physical processes. Cyber-physical systems can offer a sustainable information infrastructure which serves as a prerequisite for building up the innovation potential of a company, region, or country. They make it possible to analyse all stages of an innovation project from the technical and organisational points of view simultaneously, cover all possible social consequences and challenges, and identify unexpected promising developments. CPS have a decentralised structure which allows to solve complex problems and manage large and complex structures in real time, such as an energy grid, transport, smart city, healthcare, etc.

Identifying and categorizing contours in images is important in many areas of computer vision. Examples include such operational tasks solved by using unmanned aerial vehicles as dynamic monitoring of the condition of transport infrastructure, in particular road markings. This study has established that current methods of image contour analysis do not produce clear and reliable results when solving the task of monitoring the state of road markings. Therefore, it is a relevant scientific and applied task to improve the methods and models of filtration, processing of binary images, and qualitative and meaningful separation of the boundaries of objects of interest. To solve the task of highlighting road marking contours on images acquired from an unmanned aerial vehicle, a method has been devised that includes an operational tool for image preprocessing – a combined filter. The method has several advantages and eliminates the limitations of known methods in determining the boundaries of the location of the object of interest, by highlighting the contours of a cluster of points using histograms. The method and procedures reported here make it possible to successfully solve problems that are largely similar to those that an expert person can face when solving intelligent tasks of processing and filtering information. The proposed method was verified at an enterprise producing the Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle "Spectator" during tests of information technology of dynamic monitoring of the state of transport infrastructure. The results could be implemented in promising intelligent control systems in the field of modeling human conscious behavior when sorting data required for the perception of environmental features

Purpose – Many transportation companies struggle to effectively utilize the information provided by tracking technology for performing operational control. The research as presented in this paper aims to identify the problems underlying the inability to utilize tracking technology within this context. Moreover, this paper aims to contribute to solving these problems by proposing a set of design principles based on the concept of intelligent products. Design/methodology/approach – The study as described in this paper adopts a design science research methodology consisting of three phases. First, a case study in a transportation company has been performed to identify the problems faced when utilizing tracking technology. Second, to overcome these problems, a set of design principles has been formulated. Finally, a prototype system based on the design principles has been developed and subjected to experimental and observational evaluation. Findings – This paper identifies the problems associated with the utilization of tracking technology for the control of transport operations. Moreover, the proposed design principles support the development of information systems which overcome the identified problems and thereby enhance the utilization of tracking technology in a transportation context. Originality/value – The commonly held perception that tracking technology will improve the ability to perform operational control does not unequivocally stand up to empirical scrutiny. While it is widely demonstrated that tracking technology is able to accurately capture the detailed operational information, it remains a fundamental challenge to transform this abundance of information into accurate and timely control decisions. This research provides a valuable contribution with respect to tackling this challenge, by identifying problems and providing solutions related to the utilization of readily available tracking technology.

The transition from the current transportation system to intelligent mobility and the MaaS concept, through the introduction of Big Data analytics and digital innovation, is underway. Perceptions, attitudes and other internal factors often have a significant impact on the choice of human behavior in transportation. This paper discussed the characteristics of vehicle choice by type and depending on the goal of the trip. Private car drivers noted that they choose a car mainly because of accessibility, flexibility of use, safety and comfort. For public transportation passengers, safety and cost of travel were determining factors in their choice of public transportation. The main differences between trips with different goals were found for the indicators "time of a trip", "company trip", and "prestige". The results show that there is a positive perception of intellectual mobility among student youth, a tendency to switch from owning vehicles to other ways of using them and participating in MaaS schemes. It can be concluded that MaaS is positively perceived by the young generation of students. Based on the data obtained, proposals for the directions of sustainable development of urban public transport are made.
