This study addressed the use of benefit levers to develop a guide for an operational plan for spread of best practices in the health system of South Africa. Using the best evidence to inform practice is the cornerstone of quality patient care. Besides uptake and implementation, spreading best practices is crucial as this provides more patients with evidence-informed care and to improve practice and health (care) outcomes. However, spread of best practices is not always effectively done. An example includes Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) as this best practice is translated for practice and implemented on a limited scale; spread to the whole system seems to be problematic. Various factors can be used to facilitate the spread of best practices. Edwards and Grinspun identified four benefit levers which create the tipping point towards successful adoption, implementation and spread of evidence: alignment, permeation plans, leadership for change, and supporting and reinforcing structures. However, little is known about these benefit levers and it remains unclear what the use of benefit levers for system-wide spread would entail, specifically for other contexts as the model (including the benefit levers) has never been operationalised (Edwards & Grinspun, 2011:19). The overall aim of this study entails therefore the development of a guide for an operational plan, formulating the use of benefit levers in the spread of best practices. To achieve this aim the following objectives for this study were set: 1. To explore and describe characteristics of benefit levers to facilitate spread of best practices. 2. To develop a guide for an operational plan to use benefit levers for the spread of best practices. This study was embedded in the postmodern paradigm, whereby the systems theory was used as a theoretical framework. The first objective was achieved by two steps. Firstly, an integrative literature review of concept clarification of the four benefit levers was done. Secondly, semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with key informants from a variety of levels of the health system involved in the spread of KMC in South Africa. Findings were used to achieve objective two. A draft guide for an operational plan was developed, based on the findings of the individual interviews. A logic model was used as format. This guide was refined by experts using the Delphi technique. The Delphi involved two rounds. From the feedback of the first round of the Delphi, a logic model which provides a graphic outlook of the guide, was suggested and refined in the second round, together with the guide. Further, after the Delphi, a template useable for practice was derived from the guide. The guide, logic model and template could help organisations or departments planning to spread best practices in a certain context (e.g. South Africa), to develop an operational plan, where these benefit levers are considered. This is crucial as currently best practices (such as Kangaroo Mother Care) are often not spread on a system-wide basis to improve practice. The guide will therefore be made accessible to health care workers and researchers in South Africa Finally, conclusions were drawn, the research was evaluated, limitations were identified and recommendations were formulated for nursing practice, education and research. Overall, it can be concluded that for effective spread of best practices the benefit levers alignment, permeation plans, leadership for change and supporting and reinforcing structures are required. Further, specifically regarding the objectives and steps of this study the following conclusions can be made: • Literature/studies about leadership for change and supporting and reinforcing structures was found, but regarding alignment and permeation plans, limited rigorous literature was found (Objective 1 – Step 1). • Key informants involved in the spread of a specific best practice (Kangaroo Mother Care) could see the value of benefit levers used for the spread of best practices in the South African health system (Objective 1 – Step 2). • Benefit levers were found useful for development of a guide for an operational plan to spread best practices. This guide will be made accessible to be used by healthcare organisations and departments in South Africa (Objective 2 – Steps 1 and 2).

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Enterprise Program (EP), which provides fee-for-service consulting services to the USFS, is interested in integrating systems thinking into its service offerings. Despite there being several excellent sources on the range and diversity of systems thinking, no single framework exists that thoroughly yet concisely outlines what systems thinking is along with its deep history, theoretical tenets, and soft and hard approaches. This thesis is an attempt to create such a framework, aimed specifically at practical application in a land management agency, through literature synthesis injected with original analysis. The usefulness of the framework is then tested using three case studies within the EP and the agency as a whole. The framework highlights several important aspects of systems thinking, both generally and related specifically to social-ecological management. First, systems thinking is the transdisciplinary study of complex phenomena from a holistic, rather than reductionist, perspective. The world can be viewed as a massive set of embedded systems -- elements with relations that lead to nonlinear behavior -- making the role of the observer essential in identifying scales of interest and interactions amongst them. Second, the deep history of holistic thinking suggests that its modern scientific study could benefit from exploring the East's long-standing cultural and spiritual approaches to holism through cognitive unity and oneness with mankind and nature. Third, categorizations of systems approaches as "soft" versus "hard" are helpful but can distract us from the ultimate goal of systems thinking, which is to understand the various tools in the systems thinking toolbox so as to apply them critically and creatively to make a meaningful difference in the world. Fourth, I see the soft systems approaches as having a distinct systems thinking orientation and the hard systems approaches as overlapping substantially with operations research, the close cousin of systems thinking. Fifth, I identify a spectrum of complexity, contending that systems thinking tends to be concerned with what I call subjectively and computationally complex systems, as well as complex adaptive systems, leaving simple systems for other approaches. Finally, I contend that it is the soft systems approaches and the two theoretical pillars of hierarchy theory and cooperation theory that will aid wicked social-ecological problem solving the most. The framework is applied to three case studies. Examination of the EP reorganization using a hard systems approach revealed two critical high-level functions that were absent in the current structure, paving the way for new designs that could take those functions into account. Analysis of an initiative to increase citizen recreation on USFS lands showed that a systems approach had been improperly applied and how the application of a soft approach at the onset could have systematically framed the problem and offered unique normative insights for giving voice to relevant non-agency stakeholders as well as nature and future generations. And viewing the perennial problem of wildfire management through the lens of cooperation theory revealed how USFS leadership could take a more active role in promoting the long-term outlook, durable relationships, and reciprocal behaviors that are required for cooperative improvement to take place. As environmental narratives worsen and the need for transitioning towards sustainable ways of living heightens, systems thinking offers ever-increasing value to resource managers for its ability to deal with the many perspectives and normative content that underlie wicked problems and to help to illuminate potential consequences of system interventions given the interplay of complex structural dynamics across space and time.

The mains goals are to produce two documentaries and to prepare a good practice guide: the tree in an urban space. The reasons for its elaboration are based on the need of raising awareness among the general population, children's community and technicians responsible for the management of trees in an urban space. The project starts with a theoretical part, where it seeks to explore the knowledge related to the tree, namely its characteristics and its meaning, benefits and constraints and also the design, installation and management of trees in urban space. We emphasize the proper selection of species and native species, correct planting, pruning, phytopathological agents, phytosanitary evaluation, tree removal and residues management. This study culminates with a practical component, namely the referred documentaries and a good practice guide: the tree in an urban space.

Positioned between writing and drawing, the diagram is proposed by John Berger as an alternative strategy for articulating encounters with landscape. A diagrammatic approach offers a schematic vocabulary that can compress time and offer a spatial reading of information. Situated within the contemporary field of direct data visualisation, my practice-led research interprets Berger’s ‘Field’ essay as a guide to producing four field | studies within a suburban park in Canberra. My seasonal investigations demonstrate how applying the conventions of the pictorial list, dot-distribution map, routing diagram and colour-wheel reveals subtle ecological and biographical narratives.

This qualitative study critically examined nurses' perception of nursing qua nursing in an American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet^® re-designated healthcare system in Albany NY. Watson's Theory of Human Caring is used by many Magnet^® hospitals, including the site for this study, to inform and guide nursing practice. Watson's Theory supports concepts and practices of integral health, holism, caring, healing, and the education and integration of complementary health care modalities as independent therapeutic nursing interventions. This study aimed to understand the nurse's emancipatory experience, comportment and self-agency as she/he participated in a theory guided practice; and illuminate the nurses' acquisition, understanding and utilization of knowledge and power as required for engaging independent therapeutic nursing interventions in the unitary-transformative health paradigm.

Eight nurses from the Oncology Unit self-selected to participate without recidivism from August to October 2012. The study was conducted in two parts: 1) A questionnaire was developed by the researcher to collect demographic and educational data from participants including: age, ethnicity, level of academic education, years of experience in nursing and in specialty, education to nursing theory, including education specifically to Watson's Theory of Human Caring and to holistic nursing and Complementary and Alternative Modalities (CAM), and CAM use in practice and self-care; and 2) Kim's (1999, 2007, 2010) Critical Narrative Inquiry Method was used to collect and analyze narrative data in three phases: 1) descriptive 2) reflective; and 3) critical-emancipatory. Written and audio data from in-person interviews were transcribed and analyzed by the researcher. Data was validated by participants and used to answer four research questions: 1) What are the emancipatory experiences of nurses in a Magnet^® re-designated healthcare system that promotes Human Caring Theory; 2) What are the patterns that facilitate nurses' comportment and self-agency to fully embody and practice integral nursing qua nursing in a Magnet^® re-designated healthcare system; 3) What are the patterns that create barriers to nurses' comportment and self-agency to fully embody and practice integral nursing qua nursing in a Magnet^® re-designated healthcare system; and 4) How does the organization support nurses control over their nursing practice within this one ANCC Magnet^® re-designated healthcare system? Findings gleaned from the patterns that occurred most frequently in the narrative data included: 1) Nurses used Human Caring and Integral Nursing theoretical concepts to inform and conduct their practice; even though they reported limited education to the theories. Elements of the theories that manifested in their practice and self-care included: advocating, educating, counseling, creating a caring-healing environment by honoring the patient and family's space and wishes, approaching patients and families non-judgmentally with an open mind and loving kindness, using complementary modalities of humor, prayer, intention, authentic presence, music, imagery, touch, and obtaining complementary therapy, palliative and spiritual care consults for patients; 2) Facilitators to practice included: the support of their manager, colleagues and team members, optimal staffing patterns, resource nurses and competent, self-motivated care technicians and support staff; and 3) Nurses in the study confirmed their Magnet^® healthcare system values: a) Supportive and participative nursing management; b) Advanced education by providing tuition reimbursement and flexible scheduling; c) Participation in and use of the most current nursing research in their practice; and d) A strong nursing mentoring culture, where nurses empower each other to provide ethical care and advocate for patients' and nurses' rights. Opportunities for nursing education and leadership include: 1) The need to revise academic and continuing education curricula to adopt integral theory guided practice at all levels; 2) The need for advanced practice nurses to translate conceptual models into practice and help nurses to articulate the value and power of nursing to impact integral health and healing.

Field Guide is a mixed-media artist book detailing the exploration of a fictitious culture through cartography, narrative, and illustration. It is presented through the lens of an amateur archaeologist, navigating a chain of islands to search for ruins and artifacts. In part, the project is focused on the fantasy of an imagined world. The island chain is a place entirely of my own creation. By creating the viewpoint of an outside explorer, it was possible to navigate through this world. Although I, as the artist, can know everything about this fictitious world, adopting the perspective of someone distanced by time and place allowed for discrepancies, misinterpretation, and the sense of mystery that typically colors interpretations of foreign, ancient cultures. This character is forced to fill in the context for what she is viewing based upon her conjectures, which may or may not reveal the full truth. Overall, perspective on cultures is often shaped by the observations of a few individuals. In the same way, viewers are forced to consider this culture through the lens of one character, without being entirely certain if they are consuming objective truths.

And what exists as oppression, when confronted becomes taboo, irrational, and improper. This is my body, my mind and my drive. Fresh Expression: A Guide to Cultural Reclamation is a performative, installation that explores subversion, indulgence and the female lactating body in a sociological context; where the audience becomes active participants within a live and changing environment. This live event documents the extrication of my breast milk and recontextualizes the breast milk outside of my body. The event not only explores my personal investment in questioning my experience as a lactating woman in western culture, but also challenges the audience to reflect on topics related to lactation, bodily fluids, consumption, and sexuality.

The use of simulators in support of learning has been problematic. The limited reports on their implementation in classrooms, or in distance learning, to replace existing laboratory equipment have been incomplete and contradictory making assessment of their value difficult. Since the majority of the studies were conducted at four year colleges or universities, the validity of generalizing the results to community colleges is also questionable. However, should a method be identified to successfully implement simulators in classrooms, there would be a potential savings in equipment purchase costs and means to provide an alternative to traditional classroom laboratories. From a distance learning perspective, simulators would enable the creation of active learning environments previously not possible because of equipment requirements of the learner. However, insufficient information existed to provide a guide for community colleges to create and implement a simulated laboratory learning environment for computer training. The goal of the study was to use computer-based simulators to enable distant students to master work traditionally done in a hands-on computer laboratory. It applied current learning theories and course design techniques to create a learning environment for computer training, executed training in the environment and provided a rich descriptive report on the findings. When used in an appropriate context, simulators provided the equivalent learning environment to that of real hardware. In the experimental courses, students perceived the simulator product as beneficial to their learning experience, and confirmed their position by rating simulator labs highly and stating they would take future courses that use simulators. A pretest to posttest score comparison confirmed that knowledge of the subject matter had indeed improved. Also, the results confirmed an existing demand for simulators as tools to reinforce learning, to enable online courses, to increase flexibility in scheduling of tradition classrooms, and to reduce costs of maintaining classroom equipment. A thick description of the design, implementation and evaluation of the findings is included in this report to provide guidance for those implementing, or considering the implementation of, simulators in a community college setting. Recommendations to simulator developers and future researchers are also provided.

The Avatar for trumpet and piano by Dr. Steve Rouse is one of the most challenging compositions in the trumpet repertoire. Due to The Avatar's challenges and increasing popularity, a study is necessary to aid its performance. Each movement is performed on a different instrument: Bb piccolo (with an optional A piccolo part) for Nativity, Bb Flugelhorn for Enigma-Release and Bb trumpet for Rebirth. In addition, the performer must convey one of the work's possible programmatic meanings: (1) The Hindu belief of an Avatar and its life cycle, (2) the life of Christ or (3) the human lifecycle. Chapter 1 gives historical information about the work. Chapters 2-4 discuss each movement of The Avatar programmatically and pedagogically. Facets of each movement are analyzed including differences in programmatic choices, rehearsal techniques and sound concepts. Chapter 5 provides recording suggestions, including choosing a recording engineer, preparing and planning for a recording section, choosing a venue and the benefits of hiring a tonmeister.

The Philosophy of Least Dangerous Assumption, coupled with evidence-based practices, data collection, and data-based decision making, has provided a model for meaningful inclusion of students with a wide range of disabilities in the general education curriculum and classroom. New research on providing accessible grade aligned content has highlighted prior expectations which have shown that all too often an inadvertent glass ceiling has been placed on the achievement of students with disabilities. By promoting high expectations and the use of evidence-based practices, we can see how capable students with disabilities can truly be, as well as providing an opportunity to increase quality of life for all students.

In the modern world, huge amounts of text are being generated every minute. For example, Twitter users post their current emotions in tweets, while Facebook users vent about their experience in posts. In just one minute, Twitter users upload 350,000 tweets, and Facebook users post anywhere from 2.5 million to 3 million posts. To keep up with this growth in data, almost all of this information goes through automated text processing. To extract features such as the opinion and subjectivity in text, sentiment analysis is applied to the corpus. In this thesis, we present the TONGS library for conducting sentiment analysis. TONGS uses Word2Vec within the TensorFlow library to convert words into vector space representations. The TONGS library contains four different methods built upon previous research in sentiment analysis and Word2Vec. We further experiment and analyze these methods using the IMDB dataset. Finally, we introduce and test a new sentiment dataset from government hearings obtained through Digital Democracy, challenging the accuracy of the TONGS library in an unknown topic.

One segment of the academic community that is overlooked in most research is the large cadre of professionals who deliver a multitude of services to students outside of the classroom. From the perspective of students, the student affairs professionals they encounter in the residence halls, advising offices, and within other aspects of the campus life fabric, are the face of the university. This case study of student affairs professionals within four departments at one large, public, Research-I University seeks to define the core values of the work, understand perspectives on the individuals they work with, how practice unfolds within the organization context of the campus, and what values guide practice. The literatures drawn upon include; student affairs ideology, service delivery patterns and techniques, institutional theory, professional specialization, and trends in higher education. The findings from this study illustrate that the work experiences of student affairs professionals are dominated by brief encounters with students that occur within a work environment that is frequently overwhelming. High volumes of students seeking service and limited opportunities to develop ongoing relationships create challenging work expectations for student affairs professionals. The core values of the profession are in transition as institutional priorities that focus on efficiency and competitive advantage become further established within academe. Policy recommendations for the student affairs profession and institutional decision makers are made in the final chapter.

Annotation:

The purpose of this literature review is to compile research about common health events that occur at summer camp and the associated immune system processes. By creating a link between typical summer camp injuries, illnesses, and the resulting immune responses, this review can educate youth, parents, and camp staff about health and safety of children attending summer camps. Research in these areas was assembled in three ways: first, by analyzing my own experience as a camper, counselor, and administrative team member; second, by applying content from courses "Physiology of the Immune System" and "Infancy and Childhood Development"; and third, by examining research previously done and posted in various journals, books, and websites. Using the fictional camper, Calvin, he experiences four common issues; skin abrasions, insect bites, parasite ingestion, and contact dermatitis. Skin abrasions result in release of cytokines that stimulate an acute inflammatory response. With the activation of the plasma-kinin and coagulation cascades, the inflammation is kept local and the wound heals. Insect bites lead to activation of antibodies, which are able to clear countless extracellular infections due to high variability and specificity. Similarly, a special class of antibodies, specifically IgE, clears parasite infections. Lastly, contact dermatitis results from a type IV immune response, in which T-helper cells react excessively. Further research is required to report sufficient safety and preventive practices.

Throughout the centuries, business lives have been changing and modifying. Each era in history brought new needs, demands and requirements. During the Agricultural era land and tools played important roles, while during the Industrial era machines and factories played a dominant role in shaping the organisational and social structures. Today, we find ourselves in the Information era where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a crucial role and has become an integral business component. Survival of businesses nowadays depends strongly on how well they can use ICT to enhance their business processes. Successful electronic transformation is determined by how well companies can identify and implement the eTransformation requirements and with it adjust to the demands of the Information era. Previous research indicates that Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in particular are struggling to find the optimal way in which to track, guide and measure their eTransformation journey. In order to identify this, the following research question was proposed: “How can SMEs guide, track and measure the progress made along the eTransformation journey? The Researcher identified that to conduct this investigation the Cynefin framework would be the most suitable methodology. The framework provides techniques and methods to move the problem from one domain to the other until the solution is found. Furthermore, the methodology is based on the concept that each problem and the difficulty of solving it, can be classified into one of the Cynefin domains namely: Chaos, the extreme of the unknown, Complex, Knowable and Known, the solution. When conducting the literature review and studying the eTransformation of the SMEs today the Researcher identified that the problem that requires the identification of “How SMEs can guide, track and measure the progress made along the eTransformation journey” is in the Cynefin domain of Chaos as at that time there is no known solutions to the problem. To find out the best way to move the problem from unknown closer to the solution, in this case from Chaos to Complex, the Researcher studied currently known data. The study helped identify issues and challenges of eTransformation and reasons why companies throughout the history wanted to undertake transformation and change. Moreover, the study helped the Researcher understand the situation SMEs were facing and has allowed the Researcher to identify new pattern formations. This brought the problem into the Complex domain where now patterns were emerging and desirable ones required stabilisation. Therefore, to understand the patterns better the Researcher studied models of Organisational Change and eTransformation. The studies identified that the eTransformation Road Map assesses eTransformation along the Dimension of IT Tools and Systems the most comprehensively. Furthermore, the study revealed that eTransformation is a staged process and that it is influenced not only by the ICT factors, but also by other non- ICT factors, therefore that it is multidimensional. To identify other dimensions the Researcher, through case studies, pinpointed Key Features of eTransformation as well as that Tasks and Processes are one of the other dimensions playing a role in eTransformation. While studying eTransformation models the Researcher also reviewed models used to measure the effectiveness of ICT within the organisations (Valuations Model) where it was identified that eTransformation cannot be measured in monetary values. Therefore, to identify possible measurement criteria, the Researcher continued to study Characteristics of eTransformation through case study narratives, which helped pattern stabilisation. Conducted narrative analysis identified that to pinpoint dimensions, which influence eTransformation, dimensions of the 7 S Model would need to be studied. The investigation was conducted through interviews. Data analysis of the interviews allowed the Researcher to identify four Dimensions crucial for eTransformation. Firstly, eTransforming SMEs are required to identify their Strategy – business goals and values, following by Structure – business departments and functions, then business Tasks and Processes – essential activities for business operations so that an SME can achieve their set goals and objectives, and finally IT Tools and Systems – business technology essential to complete set activities quickly and smoothly. Following the above finding the Researcher studied eTransforming SMEs with the aim of identifying characteristics of companies for each of the eTransformation dimensions across eTransformation stages. Following the identification of eTransformation Dimensions and their Characteristics, questions, abilities and recommendations for the model, eT Guide, that can be used to track, guide and measure eTransformation were tested and applied to 30 SMEs. The study resulted in the production of eT Reports which SMEs could now use to track, measure and guide their eTransformation journey. This led to the identification of the eT Guide requirements which brought this research closer to the solution and moved the problem from the Complex domain into Knowable where an expert, here the Researcher, had the solution to the problem. Next step for the Researcher was to move the problem from the Knowable domain into Known and design and develop an online eT Guide System that SMEs could use themselves. As a result of this research, the problem has been moved from the Chaos domain into a solution of the Known domain which is accessible to the SMEs. The solution, eT Guide, can now be used by all eTransforming SMEs themselves. By answering a series of yes / no questions, SMEs can identify their current eTransformation stage, their abilities - what they can do with the resources they currently have and their recommendations - what they could do in order to improve in the form of an eT Report. Furthermore, the system allows organisations to regularly track and measure their progress through features of eT History and eT Position. In the years to come, it is expected that the eT Guide will help assist eTransforming businesses and provide them with the essentials that would help them sustain pressures of the Information era.

There is currently need for reform in art programs of all kinds, in regards to use of and focus on contemporary art and current practices. Teaching about art of our time and place enables students to understand and make connections to their world, and facilitates art making that is creative and relevant. This thesis describes theory and rationale for basing curriculum on contemporary art practices and presents a jewelry workshop, for all skill levels, that teaches contemporary art themes and practices. There are two units. The first teaches metal texturing, shaping and simple soldering skills while, focusing on art that deals with spectral and compensatory remembering themes. The second unit teaches bezel setting while focusing on alternative to the establishment art themes. The lessons in the workshop were also created using contemporary art teaching techniques and new principles and elements of design.

The continuous demand from the airlines for reduced jet engine fuel consumption results in increasingly challenging high pressure turbine nozzle guide vane (NGV) working conditions. The capability to reproduce representative boundary conditions in a rig at the combustor-turbine interaction plane is a key feature when testing NGVs in an engine-representative environment. A large scale linear cascade rig to investigate NGV leading edge cooling systems has been designed with particular attention being paid to creating engine representative conditions at the NGV inlet plane. The combustor simulator replicates the main features of a rich-burn design including large dilution jets and extensive endwall film cooling. CFD simulations have been used to develop the design which matches Reynolds number and mainstream-to-dilution jet momentum flux ratio. Detailed measurements of velocity, turbulence and temperature have been acquired at the NGV inlet plane. A thermo-couple was manufactured from 12.7 Î1⁄4m diameter wire and carefully calibrated to obtain its time constant in the velocity range of interest. The results are compared to CFD predictions and data in the literature. The time-averaged measurements show that the flow field conditions are dominated by the endwall cooling flows. The time-resolved data show that the measured turbulence length scale reflects the scale of the relevant upstream jets while the spectrum of temperature fluctuations reports a thermal cascade independent of any geometrical features. Attention was also focused on the flow field downstream of different endwall film cooling holes configurations: three arrangements of a double row of staggered cylindrical holes (lateral pitch-to-diameter ratio of 2 - 3 - 6) and one with intersecting holes (intersecting angle of 90o) were experimentally and numerically analyzed. The research quantified the extent by which closer spaced hole configurations provide more effective film coverage. It was found that the turbulent integral length scales are strongly connected to the hole diameter and spacing. It was also found that intersecting holes can potentially reduce the amount of required coolant at a fixed pressure ratio, but offer worst film performance than cylindrical holes. RANS simulations proved successful at predicting the main trends shown by the measurements. A new concept to increase the pressure margin across the film cooling holes in a specific region of vane LE coolant passage was introduced and developed: an insert was used to cover the area with the highest risk of ingestion, slowing down the flow and increasing the local static pressure. Numerical simulations were initially used to compare different designs and to analyse the impact of the insert on the overall coolant flow distribution. In particular, the effect on the static pressure downstream of the insert was identified as a critical factor that needs to be taken into account during the design process in order to avoid hot gas ingestion in other areas. The experimental campaign proved the ability of this new design to significantly increase the pressure margin in the covered region.

È stato coniato il termine Meta Style Guide, con cui si intende l'adozione di una Style Guide la realizzazione di un'ulteriore Style Guide: esse assumono la propria identità in base alla collocazione all'interno di un'architettura a due o più livelli. La style guide fornisce le basi per la progettazione e lo sviluppo dell'interfaccia utente delle applicazioni web. È una collezione di principi, linee guida e convenzioni riuniti in un singolo mezzo per formare un look and feel unificato. Il design system prende forma da questi contenuti uniti a valori, principi, design pattern e design library. È un termine nuovo ma già ampiamente usato da imprese primarie del settore di Information Technology, come Google e Microsoft. L'obiettivo del lavoro svolto consiste nel valutare l'adeguatezza dei contenuti identificati come elementi fondanti del design system, tra cui il nuovo concetto di Meta Style Guide. Per questo scopo si è scelto di focalizzarsi sull'ambito delle grandi imprese. Nello specifico si intende studiare la qualità delle interfacce e dell'esperienza utente. Ci si focalizza anche sulla misurazione delle performance nelle attività di progettazione e realizzazione di applicazioni web. Per lo studio e la raccolta dei dati si è scelto un caso d'uso aziendale con sede legale locale ma con impatto internazionale. Viene presentata la realizzazione del design system aziendale che ha l'obiettivo di rendere consistente l'esperienza utente dei numerosi prodotti sul mercato. Dall'analisi delle risposte di due questionari si osserveranno i risultati ottenuti per valutare e verificare l'apporto benefico atteso.

Spectral Immersions: A Comprehensive Guide To The Theory And Practice Of Bass Clarinet Multiphonics is a multi-component thesis that looks into the entire area of multiphonic analysis and composition for the bass clarinet. A literary section of the thesis looks at past publications and the problems associated with using this contemporary technique, in terms of both compositional and performance issues. A theoretical analysis of Type One multiphonics gives an insight into how multiphonics on the bass clarinet work in a more scientific way and their close relationship with the harmonic series. A complete analysis of Type Two multiphonics using past charts and new-found fingerings results in the creation of the new SW multiphonic charts for the bass clarinet. The new SW charts are fully tested by correcting problems in past compositions by means of several student compositional projects at various UK universities. Finally, a new set of études and pieces have been commissioned by composers from the UK and abroad. The results and successes of the pieces and new SW charts are analysed and can be listened to via accompanying audio and data CDs. The results of this thesis provide both performers and composers with an accurate, exhaustive and up-to-date usable publication. Not only does this thesis provide a new set of multiphonic charts, but the addition of compositional examples using multiphonics provides both practice and recital material for performers and useful compositional technique hints and advice for composers wishing to use this resource in the future.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prominent mental health issue in 10-15% of mothers after childbirth. Untreated PPD has a large impact on the family unit, especially the children, and can result in affected psychosocial development, psychiatric disorders, or violent behavior. The following symptoms may be present: loss of interest in activities, sleep and appetite disturbances, negative feelings, and thoughts of self-harm. Several themes have emerged regarding the lack of screening and intervention by primary care providers. This guide will explore those themes and discuss what pediatric/obstetric nurse practitioners can do to improve screening and detection rates. These practitioners are among the first postpartum mothers and families will come into contact with. Therefore, these practitioners have an opportune moment to provide early screening, detection, and intervention. This can be done correctly and successfully via clinical indicators and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). By advancing education and training, along with having referrals and resources on-hand, practitioners have a better opportunity at providing affected postpartum women with quality and timely healthcare.

In this thesis, I discuss the design, construction and evaluation of a wearable object detection system for blind users to avoid collisions. Blind people rely upon tools such as guide dogs to navigate the world around them. However, even guide dogs are prone to errors that leave their owners prone to unexpected collisions with objects, such as low-hanging branches and street signs, that may cause bodily harm. This work introduces a wearable device that provides object detection capabilities to blind people with guide dogs. The device contains a camera, an embedded computer and a vibration motor to provide feedback when an obstacle is detected. The system uses computer vision techniques to determine whether there are objects in the path of the user, as well as the distance of said objects. A series of experiments was conducted with guide dog users traversing a path of obstacles while using the device to determine the effectiveness of the device at allowing users to avoid collisions.

The purpose of this study was to develop and assess the suitability of a set of constructivist principles to guide practitioners of adult IT education and training. For the purpose of this study, constructivism was defined as an active learning process in which the learner develops meaning by continually interpreting and responding to his or her experiences. Consistent with this view of knowledge, learning must be situated in a real world context so that reality can be experienced by the learner, rather than explained by the teacher. This qualitative study involved six distinct tasks: (1) review of literature to understand the basic arguments of pedagogical constructivism, (2) examination of dominant practices in adult IT education by analyzing two representative models in depth, (3) reflection on my own journey as a learner and IT professional to see how my own experience confirms or challenges constructivist theories, (4) synthesis of literature and experience into the Principles for Authentic IT Education, (5) assessment through a focus group process with 18 IT educators and professionals to gather their response to the constructivist approach, and (6) formulation of recommendations for IT program planning, curriculum development, and instructional development. Three principles of authentic IT education were proposed. The first principle concerns authentic environment and context for IT education. It advocates using the environmental pressure inherent in the real world of IT practice to energize the learner's natural cognitive adaptation capability. This principle will lead educators to situate learning around real world work functions rather than bodies of IT knowledge. The second principle concerns authentic mediation. This principle posits that effective professional IT education is mediated by using real world tools, delivering useful and realistic products, and socializing in a community of practitioners. The third principle is authentic mission or purpose. This principle emphasizes the need to align IT educational goals with institutional missions and moral actions to change society.

Extended techniques play an important role in flute repertoire today, as composers continue to explore the possibilities of the instrument in ways not previously done before the mid-twentieth century. Pioneers of flute extended techniques, including Edgard Varèse, Luciano Berio, and Robert Dick, have all played an important role in the progression of flute repertoire leading into the twenty-first century.

Ian Clarke, a British flutist and composer, uses extended techniques as a vital element in his compositions, and has gained a great deal of attention for his breadth of work, including one of his more recent compositions, Hatching Aliens. First published in 2010, this work utilizes a vast amount of extended techniques, all of which contribute to the eerie and mysterious qualities of this programmatic composition for flute and piano. This project report studies the notation and production of extended techniques and how Clarke incorporates them into his composition, Hatching Aliens.

Contemporary professional violinists face constant exposure to multicultural compositions. For best results, they should be able to understand, capture, and express the subtleties of different styles. The violin and its repertoire spread to China through European missionaries during the late seventeenth century and continued to be developed by Chinese scientists and musicians who studied abroad. During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Chinese composers wrote many violin pieces inspired by the unique sounds of Chinese instruments. Additionally, Chinese music scholars wrote numerous essays to discuss the new Chinese style. However, much of this research has been focused on the composers and the structures of the compositions rather than on the details of violin techniques necessary to play the repertoire. The techniques in Chinese violin compositions are unique and are influenced by the traditional instruments including string, wind, and percussion instruments. Furthermore, the style of such compositions is affected by the elements of Chinese culture, such as the language, the elite society and its poetic tradition, and historical legends and events. This dissertation provides examples of Chinese violin repertoire which demonstrate the principles of three main violin techniques in the Chinese style: slides, chords, and pizzicati. In order to help professional violinists better perform Chinese violin compositions, the dissertation also includes a number of exercises covering each technique above.

Since the 1950s, composers worldwide have explored the use of the trombone in new and exciting ways, from expanding the functional range of the instrument to creating unique timbres through the use of mutes and extended techniques. Since then, many standard works in the literature have been born from this pushing of the envelope from composers like John Cage, Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis, and Daniel Schnyder. On the forefront of the newest crop of composers expanding the voice of the trombone is Tyler Kline (b. 1991). This project will function as a formal analysis and performer’s guide to his 2015 work render for bass or tenor trombone and fixed electronics. Through examination of this music, as well as a discussion with the composer and performances of this work, the performer will gain insight into the inspirations behind this work, Kline’s compositions on the whole, as well as performance considerations for this work. In addition to the performance guide, a recording of render, as well as several other works of Kline’s, will be produced and released as an album through New Branch Records in Lexington, KY.

abstract: The mathematics test is the most difficult test in the GED (General Education Development) Test battery, largely due to the presence of story problems. Raising performance levels of story problem-solving would have a significant effect on GED Test passage rates. The subject of this formative research study is Ms. Stephens’ Categorization Practice Utility (MS-CPU), an example-tracing intelligent tutoring system that serves as practice for the first step (problem categorization) in a larger comprehensive story problem-solving pedagogy that purports to raise the level of story problem-solving performance. During the analysis phase of this project, knowledge components and particular competencies that enable learning (schema building) were identified. During the development phase, a tutoring system was designed and implemented that algorithmically teaches these competencies to the student with graphical, interactive, and animated utilities. Because the tutoring system provides a much more concrete rather than conceptual, learning environment, it should foster a much greater apprehension of a story problem-solving process. With this experience, the student should begin to recognize the generalizability of concrete operations that accomplish particular story problem-solving goals and begin to build conceptual knowledge and a more conceptual approach to the task. During the formative evaluation phase, qualitative methods were used to identify obstacles in the MS-CPU user interface and disconnections in the pedagogy that impede learning story problem categorization and solution preparation. The study was conducted over two iterations where identification of obstacles and change plans (mitigations) produced a qualitative data table used to modify the first version systems (MS-CPU 1.1). Mitigation corrections produced the second version of the MS-CPU 1.2, and the next iteration of the study was conducted producing a second set of obstacle/mitigation tables. Pre-posttests were conducted in each iteration to provide corroboration for the effectiveness of the mitigations that were performed. The study resulted in the identification of a number of learning obstacles in the first version of the MS-CPU 1.1. Their mitigation produced a second version of the MS-CPU 1.2 whose identified obstacles were much less than the first version. It was determined that an additional iteration is needed before more quantitative research is conducted.

In recent years, some visual impaired assistant tools have been development, but the indoors guide system is not available. This paper uses the image processing method to recognize the doorplate as well as calculates the distance between user and doorplate. The system converts detected message to voice by text to speech technology. The features of the image grabbed by a webcam have been calculated by Hu moment and vertical projection. SVM method is used to obtain the image classification. This system needs only 200ms to process recognition and the recognition rate can reach 90 percent.

How people survive and thrive through adversity is a question which has prompted much research. There is little agreement on the definition of resilience beyond the basic idea of "bouncing back", resulting in many studies which offer contradictory and confusing information. This study sought to organise the literature into broad conceptual categories, and attempted to explain some of the differences in definitions and research methods at the level of paradigm. A need to reconceptualise resilience was identified and undertaken in view of input from ecosystemic, cybernetic and postmodem paradigms. Attention was given especially to the role oflanguage, meaning and description, and the role of the observer/researcher in such a reconceptualisation. Guidelines were offered for approaching research in future. Finally, the context of the researcher was examined in an attempt at self-reflexivity as part of the process of research as proposed in the reconceptualisation.

The products of our engineering works are everywhere and the safety and satisfactory performance of these works is the result of the deliberate inclusion of experience based judgement. The starting point for many of these works is the recognition of what has been done in the past, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Often however, a geotechnical engineer must rely on theory and to some degree, experimentation, in particular when advancing new methods of design and construction. This can be daunting when one considers that the natural materials we work with are highly complex with large variability and in some cases, uncertainty in their properties and behaviour. Analysis and decision making based on these properties includes a mix of theoretical and empirical techniques, requiring significant engineering judgement. The experience gained and lessons learned by geotechnical practitioners in the early 1900s are as valuable today as they were at that time and this becomes the hypothesis upon which the Author has prepared this document. It is often that a problem encountered today, was encountered and very likely solved in the past and that its resolution at that time can be applied (at least in principle) to modern practice. Little in engineering happens by chance and many failures are the result of a poor decision based on poor information, an underestimation of natural forces and laws of physics, or perhaps, the overestimation of one’s experience and ability. Successes on the other hand are often a culmination of supplementing intuition with experienced based judgement. Once one understands and appreciates the importance of taking advantage of the past experience of others and using this experience as a guide forward, then improved judgement and capacity for professional practice will result.

In recent years, location-based services have received increased attention, with many developed practical applications for GPS, such as traffic navigation, travel guides, album maps, etc. This study developed a P2P mobile guide system that supports both indoor and outdoor locations. When a user walks indoor or outdoor exhibition areas with mobile guide equipment, this system can indicate the position of the user, and the location-based P2P clustering mechanism enables the user to download relevant 3D scenes and multimedia information in P2P mode from nearby peers with the same guide interest, thus, guide data transmission efficiency is effectively increased.
