Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the impact of traditional gender patterns on young women's perceived educational needs. To fulfill the purpose, the study was intended to answer the questions: Why do young women experience a need for education after high school? How can young women's educational choices in high school be understood and discussed from a gender perspective? How can young women invest in higher education understood and discussed from a class perspective? To fulfill the purpose, the study has taken its starting point in the qualitative approach and this in order to seek a deeper understanding of the studied phenomenon. The empirical material has been collected through six semi-structured interviews. The selection of respondents was made through a targeted one with the following criteria: (1) women, (2) age range between 20 and 30 years, (3) has started higher education, (4) University and college education 3 years or longer. The results of the study showed that all respondents had chosen "typical" female-dominant program choices in high school. A choice that was mainly based on habit and security. The choice of program then resulted in a perceived dissatisfaction with the work situation they ended up in after high school. This dissatisfaction was mainly based on low wages, poor working hours and generally limited impact at work. From the results to be interpreted, young women's educational choices through a gender perspective can be understood as the consequence of women and men being socialized into different educations and professions because of their gender. Against this background, the respondents therefore saw higher education as a tool in their longing for a more desirable future. Furthermore, the results can indicate how young women's investment in higher education from a class perspective can be understood by the fact that higher education is considered to have a high symbolic value. A value that women can invest in to increase their cultural capital and thus increase the assets of profits and benefits in the future after their completed education.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis examines cultural and other symbolic capital amongst medical students in a Bourdian sense. Medical students at Karolinska Institutet, a Swedish medical university, were compared to four other prestige full educational programs in the Stockholm area. Investments in educational capital, media habits and other cultural investments were compered. The data was collected at an earlier stage at Uppsala University using a postal questionnaire. The data was strengthening with interviews with the medical students. The medical students demonstrated that they had a lot in common with students from the other elitist education programs that was part of the study. However they also had an extra dimension that was not found amongst the other students and that was a sense of an altruistic thought, e.g. that they wanted to “do good” and that was the reason why they wanted to become doctors.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleYouth unemployment is a serious social problem and a widely discussed topic in media. The study focuses on the living conditions of four young adults between the ages of 24-26 in their capacity of being unemployed, or living with a risk of being unemployed in a near future, viewed from the life situations of the young adults. The theoretical framework of the study is based on social capital, symbolic capital, cultural capital, habitus, lifestyles and life-planning. The study is based on qualitative interviews with four young adults all having some form of experience of unemployment. In the analysis focus is given to explain how the informants discuss their life situation in relation to unemployment. The analysis shows that the informants want nothing more than to get a permanent job but experience that they due to social limitations and lack of appropriate networks are having trouble finding such. What also appeared was that the informants have high demands on themselves to find a job whilst they have low demands on support from surrounding people.
