The research aims to analyse the concept of the 'holiday home' in Italy, a phenomenon that is not very well known and not given sufficient visibility in the tourism sector. The objective is to grasp the role and the degree of response that the holiday homes can offer in order to consolidate a genuinely social and sustainable tourism, which is the specific feature of the Associazione di Promozione Sociale Santa Lucia. The holiday homes represent an efficacious response to the emerging motivations for travel and a new sensitivity towards social and sustainable tourism. The growing opportunities for this sector call for reflection on the mission and future positioning of the holiday homes within the tourist reception panorama, with the deriving choices relating to: the offer, consisting of values more than of services; the functions fulfilled, intimately bound up with the demands of the individual and the territory; the quality of the service, which is not generic but linked to the functions and can be measured in line with objective and subjective parameters. Strategic awareness, managerial capacity and elevated professionalism at all levels are the factors of legitimisation and success of this original reception formula.

Unsustainable chemical products and processes cause damage to the earth that will become irreparable without ethical principles that prioritize the good of future generations. A serious challenge is posed by anthropogenic endocrine disruptors, synthetic chemicals that can alter development and impair health at current exposure levels. These low-dose adverse effects caused by everyday chemicals represent one of the great challenges of green science. Solutions require interdisciplinary collaboration among the fields of sustainable chemistry, environmental health sciences, and integrative environmental medicine. Their joint mission is to advance assessment, design, stewardship, and regulation of chemical products and processes and to promote environmental and health performances that are valued as much as the historically dominant economic and technical performances. The Chemistry and Sustainability Bookcase and the framework for strategic sustainable development are organizational tools for tackling these challenges. Solutions already built by interdisciplinary partnerships offer examples of practical transgenerational justice.

In this book we analyse the sustainability question in the Modern Production System, which today encompasses most of the world economy. We present concepts, theories, indicators, indices, formulas, methods and historical date to examine the evolution and trends of two sustainable development dimensions: socioeconomic and environmental. We focus on the nature-economy nexus and analyse its contradictory process: the more the economics needs nature, the more its cause natural resources depletion and environmental degradation. The huge increase on CO2 emissions in the last three decades – from oil, coal and another non-renewable resources– provides strong evidence to such contradiction. We then analyze the role of material recycle as a solution against both, resources depletion and environmental degradation. Our analysis suggests that the recycle of materials can only contribute to reduce the problem. Moreover, there cycle process of materials depends, on many cases, of public or social subsidies – as financial incentives from the government and domestic material selection. The environment problem transcends borders (as an enterprise, a village, a city, or a country): one can be sustainable, but in fact transfer to other its environmental problem. We adopt the notion of Environmental Space to deal with the sustainability question. We then present and apply the concept of Eco-inequal Exchange to analyse such a question. The environmental movement, which started about fifty years ago, did transform the sustainable development into a global mission. By exposing socio-environmental problems generated by the modern production system itself, this book aims to contribute to a better understanding the limits and possibilities of ours actions as environmentalists.

This chapter is based on two national surveys of associates and vowed religious that CARA conducted in 2015, replicating a 2000–2002 CARA study of the same population. Both studies were commissioned by the North American Conference of Associates and Religious (NACAR). The chapter focuses on the relationship between associates and vowed religious, what attracts and sustains associates in this relationship, and how both groups view the future of the associate relationship. Most associates are attracted to the spiritual life and mission of the institute, which is how associates build their relationship with vowed religious. To continue this relationship, associates are willing to assume more control for associate activities. Aging populations and attracting younger members are a challenge for both associates and religious. Both groups are struggling to ensure sustainable leadership for the future.

As the world’s largest regional organisation under Chapter VIII of the UN Charter, the OSCE also contributes to global security through regional conflict prevention and crisis management. In his introductory chapter, OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger addresses the question of how the OSCE can also contribute to the achievement of the 17 goals of the United Nations for sustainable development. The OSCE Yearbook 2019 also includes articles on domestic political developments in countries such as Armenia and Kazakhstan, and the work of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine. There are also contributions on the monitoring of freedom of assembly by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the link between climate change and security, as well as the integration of heterogeneous societies as a means of conflict prevention, and China’s and the EU’s relations with Central Asia. A current selection of literature completes the volume.

When the competing cultures and communication styles of correctional and health care professionals clash, communication is compromised and the potential for problems and unwanted outcomes is compounded. Notwithstanding the inherent cultural differences among interdisciplinary staff, effective communication in a correctional setting is especially challenging for psychiatrists. Whether transitioning from the protective structure of a residency, or moving from a private practice or other mental health setting, psychiatrists working in a jail or prison will likely experience their new environment as replete with competing interests and priorities. Also, unlike in a health care setting, where physicians are at the top of the hierarchy, psychiatrists working in a jail or prison are further down the organizational hierarchy. It is in such an environment that it becomes critically important for psychiatrists to develop communication strategies that are successful in creating effective and sustainable working relationships not only with patients, but also with the facility’s leadership, security staff, treatment team members, and other interdisciplinary staff. This chapter will discuss ways in which psychiatrists play a critical role in mission requirements that necessitate effective communication skills with interdisciplinary staff in jails and prisons. From identifying the variables in the correctional culture that shape communication to improving interdisciplinary collaboration, this chapter will explore the ways in which correctional psychiatrists can model effective communication styles and strategies that enhance professional credibility and improve treatment outcomes.

Women’s empowerment in the developing world has become a primary policy goal. Apart from being a fundamental right, increased female autonomy has been shown to create other long-term benefits—such as reduced fertility, better educational and health outcomes for children, and a stronger female political voice. The landmark United Nations Millennium Declaration committed member states to promoting gender equality as an effective way to combat poverty, hunger, disease, and to stimulate sustainable development. Many outcomes for women have improved—with unprecedented gains in rights, education and health, access to employment, and political positions. While significant progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment has been achieved, women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence throughout the developing world. The starkest manifestations of gender discrimination is the notion of ‘missing women’, first coined by Sen, with current estimates of more than 200 million women who are demographically missing worldwide.

The Coastal Collection of Paraná: territories and perspectives and especially in its fifth volume: DEVELOPMENT, PUBLIC POLICIES AND HEALTH is an initiative headed by the Postgraduate Program in Sustainable Territorial Development – PPGDTS at the Federal University of Paraná - UFPR. It is a collective effort among knowledge agents, that is, research teachers, students engaged in research, public agents and local community actors, and aims to add value to the production of knowledge about the regional reality, in a plot that expresses the activities of research, teaching and extension carried out in a synergic and cooperative manner along the coast of Paraná State. The volume consists of 16 chapters, organized in three parts: Development, territory and job, University, inclusion and Regional development, and Territory and health. It is the result of the efforts of a team of teachers and students already in the middle of consolidating their capacities as educators and researchers. The approaches presented result from a long and dense practice of reflections, interactive actions among academic and community agents, within an epistemic and methodological perspective, compatible with the current forms of cooperative production among several disciplines. It is an important and vigorous exercise of knowledge production, in line with a university project that reaffirms its vocation and mission focused on regional and local development, by valuing the rescue of knowledge and community practices, by encouraging and invitation to the dialogue of academic knowledge with the rich cultural heritage of coastal populations.

This book shows how social entrepreneurship and social enterprises can integrate social and economic development. These dual-mission ventures that strive to achieve both financial sustainability and social good are especially path-breaking approaches in reducing economic, education, health, technology, and other disparities among marginalized individuals, families, and communities. While this global movement varies in pace and scope, this work features snapshots from eight countries or regions. This volume focuses especially on emerging economies and those in transition, featuring African countries of Kenya and Tanzania, Albania, Argentina, Central Asian countries of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Cuba, India, the Russian Federation, and Taiwan. We examine a variety of ventures and their social policy context as they attempt to meet human needs while simultaneously also attaining financial sustainability. We also suggest social policies that promote supports for social entrepreneurs since environmental, economic, and social sustainability are core goals. But we also raise cautions about fostering social enterprises as panaceas for addressing human needs when government investments are required in social welfare, social protections, and ecosystem supports. Contextual frames are provided that range from social enterprise business plans and measuring entrepreneurial orientation to avoiding displacement dynamics and pitfalls of non-market economies. These are consistent with the global agenda of building jobs from the ground up as articulated in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Recommendations are derived from illustrative cases from the nations and regions featured for more strategic supports and investments in social entrepreneurs and social enterprises.
