If a fault occurs in a technical system, for example in an airplane, it is important to beable to detect that there is a fault and to find what in the system that is faulty. Theprocedure of determining, given certain observations, if faults are present and if so thelocation of faults is called a diagnosis. For achieving diagnosis we can use computersoftware that takes observations of a system as input and that generates a diagnosis asoutput. This is called a diagnostic system. To build a diagnostic system we needanother piece of computer software which is called a diagnostic tool. This thesis willpresent a market survey for diagnostic tools as well as an analysis of three of the toolsfound in the survey. The analysis can be seen as constituted by two different aspects, one focusing on the diagnostic methods with which each tool creates diagnosticsystems, the other focusing on practical details that determine the usability of eachtool. The analysis found that the largest differences were between the methods used increating the diagnostic systems.

A self-administered, mail questionnaire was used to assess the current state of hospital drug-use evaluation (DUE) programs within short-term, general U.S. hospitals. During February-March 1992, two mailings were sent to pharmacy directors at 491 randomly selected institutions. A net response rate of 66.6% (327/491) was achieved. The level of pharmacist participation in DUE program activities was found to be very high and to have a significant, positive correlation with the rated effectiveness of current DUE programs and the rated importance of pharmacist participation in DUE program activities. Pharmacists were members on 97.9% of responders' DUE (sub)committees, while 65.5% of pharmacist members held voting privileges. Pharmacists devoted an average of 11.27 hours per week to DUE-related tasks. Wide variation was demonstrated in rationale used to select DUE study drugs, interventions employed, use of DUE study results, and methods selected to evaluate DUE program effectiveness.

Companies must weigh the trade-offs of support strategies and choose between the effectiveness of meeting customer expectations and the cost of implementing product support tools and services. These support strategies can be critical to the success of a company and therefore, must provide efficient problem resolution in order to meet the satisfaction of the customer and retailer. This thesis reviews survey data collected from a large agricultural equipment company’s retailers on their satisfaction of product support tools and services provided by the company, and how the retailers utilize these product support tools and services when attempting to resolve a product issue. This evaluation of a company’s product support strategy leads to the identification of potential solutions to help maximize the efficiency of the problem resolution process, as well as minimize the opportunity costs and financial costs of product support sources.

Annotation:
The main campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) has a current parking inventory of approximately 14,310 parking spaces in 88 surface lots. Of the available parking spaces 92% are designated for the use of Virginia Tech students, faculty and staff members. The share of visitor usage of these parking spaces is approximately 2%. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the current visitor parking system and develop techniques to enhance the parking facility operations. The current visitor parking demand is determined by conducting a field evaluation of the visitor parking in five parking lots. Personal and follow-up interviews were conducted with university visitors to determine their satisfaction levels with the existing parking facilities. While the survey results demonstrated that 52% of visitors rated the parking services to be good or very good, the study also showed that approximately 28% of the visitors did not know the location of the most convenient parking lot to access their destination and almost 6% were not satisfied with the parking services offered by Virginia Tech. Apart from this, about 32% of the visitors had to visit at least 2 parking lots before finding a parking space. These figures clearly demonstrate a need for a better management of the parking lots to serve the visitors in an efficient way. In an attempt to enhance the visitor parking system a web-based interactive framework is proposed. This framework identifies the best possible parking lot(s) for a selected destination considering various factors like - distance of the parking lot to the destination and typical occupancy of the parking lot at specific times of the day and other relevant factors. The web-based interactive system is designed to provide the visitor with two or more choices for the parking in order to arrive at their desired destination.

Annotation:

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the factor structure of the Student School Uniform Survey, developed by Sanchez, Yoxsimer, and Hill (2012) for the purpose of collecting data on student perceptions of the benefits of wearing a school uniform. A secondary purpose of this study was to investigate relationships among responses based on student membership in the demographic groupings of gender, ethnicity, and grade level. This quantitative study utilized existing, de-identified data that related to sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students at three middle schools in northern Nevada. The data were collected in each school at the conclusion of the first year of a mandatory school uniform policy. A factor analysis was conducted on 32 of the survey items which revealed 13 of the items contributed to three meaningful factors: Factor 1—Safety and Behavior of Others, Factor 2—Acceptance and My Behavior, and Factor 3—Ease of Going to School. Internal reliability of the survey items was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (a), which indicated the 13 variables that related to each of the identified factors had a high degree of reliability (α > . 70). To check the factors for reliability, a Pearson’s product moment correlation was conducted. In all cases the identified factors had a high degree of reliability. Finally, three multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were conducted to determine if demographic groups identified by gender, ethnicity, and grade level had discrepant response patterns on the three identified factors. Where significance was found, an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was calculated and the factor means were examined to identify which groups responded higher on each factor. The results revealed that seventh grade students responded higher on Factors 1 and 3, Hispanic/Latino respondents responded higher on Factors 2 and 3, and there were no differences in response patterns by gender.

The development of the Internet and the emergence of audio compression technologies have contributed to the realization of making millions of music titles accessible to millions of users. Due to the extensive distribution of music, consumers are being presented with a problem of information overload, while the music industry is being faced with the challenge of personalized promotion and distribution. Music recommendation systems aim to ease the task of finding the music items that might interest the users by generating meaningful recommendations. The recommendation for music is different from those for books and movies, due to its low cost per item, short consumption time, high per-item reuse, highly contextual usage, and numerous item types. Understanding the patterns of music listening and consumption is important to create accurate and satisfying music recommendations. This thesis reviews state-of-the-art music recommendation and discovery methods with the goal of presenting the historical developments in this area. Traditional music recommendation systems can be classied as one of two major kinds: collaborative filtering and content-based filtering. Recently, the research community has broadened its attention to include other aspects, such as hybrid approaches, context awareness, social tagging, music networks, visualization, playlist generation, and group recommendation. For the evaluation of music recommendation systems, researchers or developers need to take into account properties such as accuracy, coverage, confidence, novelty, diversity, and privacy. These properties can be measured in an offline simulation, a user study, or an online evaluation. Suggestions for future work in both the design and the evaluation of music recommendation systems are given.

A meta-evaluation of the Taiwan Ministry of Education's 1990 National Technology Institutes Evaluation practices was conducted. The major focus of the meta-evaluation was to compile pertinent information and to make comparisons of performance relative to the utility, feasibility, propriety, and accuracy of the Taiwan Ministry of Education's 1990 National Technology Institutes Evaluation practices as perceived by the evaluation team members (evaluators) and the stakeholders (the evaluated). The evaluation team and stakeholders were also asked to assess the importance of 30 Program Evaluation Practice Standards for the evaluation. Data were collected through mailed questionnaires and informal interviews. Information gleaned from this study were based on responses received from the 1990 Taiwan National Technology Institutes Evaluation team members and the stakeholders including institute presidents and academic program leaders. Results of the study provided the basis for improving the evaluation practices of the Taiwan National Technology Institutes Evaluation including recommendations for improving the evaluation model, policies, procedures, and practices. Results of the study revealed that: 1. The evaluation team and stakeholders held similar beliefs regarding the importance of the 30 Program Evaluation Practice Standards for the 1990 Taiwan National Technology Institutes Evaluation. The Program Evaluation Practice Standards were perceived as important ideals for the orientation of the process and practice of evaluation in Taiwan. 2. The evaluation team and stakeholders gave similar assessments as to the utility, feasibility, propriety, and accuracy of the 1990 Taiwan National Technology Institutes Evaluation practice. Based upon analyses of the data, the findings indicated that the evaluation system employed by the Taiwan Ministry of Education produces outcomes that are overall acceptable to both the evaluators and the evaluated. As the result, recommendations were offered and reviewed by a panel of experts in Taiwan.

Annotation:
This work presents a survey and a user evaluation of tone mapping operators (TMOs) for high dynamic range (HDR) video, i.e. TMOs that explicitly include a temporal model for processing of variations in the input HDR images in the time domain. The main motivations behind this work is that: robust tone mapping is one of the key aspects of HDR imaging [Reinhard et al. 2006]; recent developments in sensor and computing technologies have now made it possible to capture HDR-video, e.g. [Unger and Gustavson 2007; Tocci et al. 2011]; and, as shown by our survey, tone mapping for HDR video poses a set of completely new challenges compared to tone mapping for still HDR images. Furthermore, video tone mapping, though less studied, is highly important for a multitude of applications including gaming, cameras in mobile devices, adaptive display devices and movie post-processing. Our survey is meant to summarize the state-of-the-art in video tonemapping and, as exemplified in Figure 1 (right), analyze differences in their response to temporal variations. In contrast to other studies, we evaluate TMOs performance according to their actual intent, such as producing the image that best resembles the real world scene, that subjectively looks best to the viewer, or fulfills a certain artistic requirement. The unique strength of this work is that we use real high quality HDR video sequences, see Figure 1 (left), as opposed to synthetic images or footage generated from still HDR images.

Annotation:

The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is the most widely used cellular technology in the world. Approximately 800 million people around the world are using GSM for different purposes, but mostly for voice communication and SMS. For GSM, like many other widely used systems, security is crucial. The security involves mechanisms used to protect the different shareholders, like subscribers and service providers. The aspects of security that this report covers are mainly anonymity, authentication and confidentiality.

The important aspects of the system that need protection are described, along with the implementation of mechanisms used for the protection. It appears that many of the very valuable aspects of GSM can be attacked.

The anonymity of a GSM user is compromised resulting in the attacker being able to observe the time, rate, length, sources or destinations of e g calls. Even tracking a subscriber’s movements becomes possible. However, a passive attack is not sufficient to perform these attacks. The attacker needs to mount an active attack using equipment offering base station functionality.

Authentication is a crucial aspect of a wireless communication system due to the nature of the medium used, i e the radio link that is available to every one and not only the legitimate entities. Even the authentication mechanisms are attacked. It is possible to clone a subscription either by having physical access to the smart card or over the air interface. Cloning a subscription over the air requires base station functionality.

The most obvious threat against communication systems is eavesdropping on conversations. The privacy of GSM conversations is protected using some version of the A5 algorithm. There are several impressive cryptanalytical attacks against these algorithms, that break the encryption and make it possible to eavesdrop in real-time. Most of these algorithms require, however, extensive computation power and unrealistic quantities of known plaintext, which make it difficult to use them in practice. Difficulties using cryptanalytical attacks to break the confidentiality of GSM calls does not mean that conversations are well protected. Loopholes in the protocols used in GSM make it possible for an outsider, with access to sufficient equipment, to eavesdrop on conversations in real-time.

In the presence of these threats and vulnerabilities it is justified to wonder whether GSM provides sufficient security for users with very valuable information to communicate. These users may be military organisations, senior management personnel in large companies etc. GSM’s current security model does note provide sufficient protection for these entities. An additional layer of security should be added to the current security model.

The DoD requirements for software are growing almost as rapidly as the escalating cost of developing the software. The new rapid prototyping paradigm is an innovative approach to software development, which modifies the traditional life cycle model. This thesis features a comprehensive survey and evaluation of the rapid prototyping paradigm. The survey describes the rapid prototyping process, the complex prototyping support system environment required, proposed rapid prototyping methodologies, and published rapid prototyping models. The rapid prototyping methodologies and models are evaluated with respect to their conceptual design. The survey and evaluation of the methodologies and models reveal a progressive paradigm featuring some methodologies and models that can be implemented now and some that are capable of being implemented in the future. Because of DoD's influence on the software industry, we discuss how DoD should usher in the new paradigm, set strategic goals, and further decompose these goals into near-term, and long-term goals.

This study aimed to provide evidence for the reliability and validity of the Systems Coaching Survey (SCS). Systems coaching is an approach to building capacity among groups of educators to drive educational reform efforts by employing seven interdependent sets of skills (interpersonal communication, data-based problem solving, team facilitation, content knowledge dissemination, leadership, professional learning, evaluation). The SCS was designed to measure educators’ skills to facilitate implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS). The 41-item survey was piloted nationally in the spring of 2017 by 1,060 educators across 180 schools in six U.S. states who had responsibilities for facilitating MTSS practices in their schools. This study used multilevel confirmatory factor analysis to examine the construct validity and reliability of the tool at the educator and school levels. Results indicated support for seven factors at the educator level representing the seven systems coaching skill sets, and one between-level factor labeled School Context. Congeneric reliability estimates were in the acceptable to high ranges. Implications for future research on the SCS and use of the tool in practice are discussed.

Annotation:
Recent policy change allows states to spend federal dollars directly on teen-led driver safety efforts and requires regular evaluations of effectiveness. There are currently no standardized instruments to measure change in teen driving behavior relevant to teen leaders. This study serves the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, Tennessee Highway Safety Office and their network of teen leaders to empirically test and refine the I Drive Smart survey developed by partners and grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The survey is designed to be administered by teen leaders to their peers and produce data relevant for use in improving planning as well as tracking changes occurring from their work. The survey measures attitudes, perceptions of social norms (peer, family, and law enforcement), perceptions of behavior control, and both driving and passenger behavior intentions. The I Drive Smart web survey was administered by a group of teen leaders to 175 of their peers. Findings were used to inform local planning and in this quasi-confirmatory study aimed at optimizing the survey. An exploratory factor analysis revealed a four factor model aligned with TPB that explained 61.618% of variation. Item reliability analysis demonstrated high internal consistency for the behavior intention scale with a Cronbach’s alpha of .884. An ordinary least squares regression test found the predictive validity of the identified components to be strong, explaining 64.5% of variation in the model and identifying perceptions of behavior control as the best predictor of behavior intentions, followed by family and peer norms. The behavior control component retained so much variation that the optimized survey assesses both volitional and non-volitional control concepts. Further, teen leaders were able to successfully administer the survey and found data helpful in supporting their planning. This study demonstrates that teen leaders are capable of directing evaluation activities and that the refined version of the I Drive Smart survey has appropriate psychometric properties for teen leaders in highway safety to use. Standard procedures for using the survey are discussed along with recommendations for analysis that includes triangulation with other local data points.

Researchers and practitioners have indicated that current teacher evaluation systems do not distinguish differences between teachers. In an attempt to redesign the current system and create a more effective system, legislative mandates required the use of multiple measures in the teacher evaluation systems of states receiving federal money. As a result student perception surveys became one of the multiple measures being considered for use in the teacher evaluation process. In this study, student perception survey results and certified evaluator observation results were analyzed to determine if there was a significant linear relationship between students' and evaluators' perceptions of effective teaching. Central tendencies, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation were calculated using the scores of both variables for each indicator to find the variability within the data sets. Additionally, a Pearson r was used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the two variables using six teaching indicators designed through the Network for Educator Effectiveness teacher evaluation program. The Pearson r revealed a significant linear relationship between the two variables for two of the six indicators and a weak to moderate positive relationship for the remaining four. Finally, quartiles of students' and evaluators' scores were calculated and analyzed to further explore potential relationships between the variables. Quartile patterns indicated a potential positive relationship for all six indicators. The results from this study can be used to help local, regional, and state decision-makers better understand the advantages and disadvantages of the various measures commonly used to evaluate teaching personnel.

This study evaluates the accuracy, precision, and stability of three different methods of cross-survey analysis in order to determine their suitability for estimating the proportions of low-incidence populations. Population parameters of size and demographic distribution are necessary for planning and policy development. The estimation of these parameters for low-incidence populations poses a number of methodological challenges. Cross-survey analysis methodologies offer an alternative to generate useful, low-incidence population estimates not readily available in today's census without conducting targeted, costly surveys to estimate group size directly. The cross-survey methods evaluated in the study are meta-analysis of complex surveys (MACS), pooled design-based cross-survey (PDCS), and Bayesian multilevel regression with post-stratification (BMRP). The accuracy and precision of these methods were assessed by comparing the estimates of the proportion of the adult Jewish population in Canada generated by each method with benchmark estimates. The stability of the estimates, in turn, was determined by cross-validating estimates obtained with data from two random stratified subsamples drawn from a large pool of US surveys. The findings of the study indicate that, under the right conditions, cross-survey methods have the potential to produce very accurate and precise estimates of low-incidence populations. The study did find that the level of accuracy and precision of these estimates varied depending on the cross-survey method used and on the conditions under which the estimates were produced. The estimates obtained with PDCS and BMRP methodologies were more accurate than the ones generated by the MACS approach. The BMRP approach generated the most accurate estimates. The pooled design-based cross-survey method generated relatively accurate estimates across all the scenarios included in the study. The precision of the estimates was found to be related to the number of surveys considered in the analyses. Overall, the findings clearly show that cross-survey analysis methods provide a useful alternative for estimation of low-incidence populations. More research is needed to fully understand the factors that affect the accuracy and precision of estimates generated by these cross-survey methods

Our employer, Gaddad, is a tattoo and piercing community that was created in 2006 with the basic idea to make it easier for people to get in touch with the tattoo artists and piercers from all over Sweden. With the homepage’s popularity at 2009 they decided to expand with the news page Inkzine. 2011 they contacted us with a plan to expand the homepage to Europe and then merge their two sites under the name Inkzine. The goal of this project was to create design suggestions for Gaddad / Inkzine that both the administration and the current users liked and would consider implementing on the website. In order to evaluate the current design and our suggestions we decided to use two questionnaires . The first questionnaire evaluated the currentdesign to provide us with information for the redesign. The second questionnaire evaluated our new suggestions. With these questionnaire we also carried out an analysis to see the differences in opinions among the users and also between the administration and the users. We also investigated other community homepages, company homepages that had been internationalized, and other tattoo homepages. To see what others had done to adapt to the international market and to investigate the design of tattoo homepages. We also did literary studies in redesign and internationalization, in order to obtain a theoretical foundation for our work. The results of the investigation of other homepages showed that in order to perform an internationalization of a web site no major changes to the looks were necessary, only linguistic changes. The results of our questionnairesshowed that users had in most cases put the majority of their votes on

Campus mediation programs (CMP's) experienced a rapid growth in higher education institutions from 18 programs in 1990 to more than 200 programs in 1998 (Warters, 2000). During that period, CMP's became a widely accepted approach for addressing conflict within US colleges and universities. However, recent data indicate that there are just over 100 programs which points to a decline and raises questions as to the value of campus mediation programs to higher education institutions. A hindrance to addressing the questions raised has been the limited amount of empirical research and published data on evaluation use within campus mediation programs. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to gather information from US campus mediation program directors regarding their use of program evaluation in order to suggest ways to improve their evaluation efforts. Campus mediation program directors were surveyed on their perceptions of evaluation use in their respective programs. This study was conducted over a period of six months using a web-survey and follow-up telephone interviews. The web-based survey used in this study was adapted from an online campus mediation program survey developed by Rick Olshak and modified. The web-survey consisted of four sections: Demographics, Description of Services, Evaluation and Program Profile. The population consisted of 108 campus mediation program directors in US higher education institutions who were solicited for this study and agreed to participate. Of the 108 directors, there were a total of 59 respondents representing a 55% response rate. There were nine respondents who participated in a follow-up telephone interview. Data analysis for the research questions utilized rank order, frequencies, and averages; supplemental analyses utilized an independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA's and Pearson correlations. Results indicated that evaluation received one of the lowest priority ranking as a program goal, however, most of the directors indicated that they would be very interested in learning different ways of improving their evaluation methods and having a standard evaluation process. The most prevalent concerns and recommendations from the telephone follow-up interviews focused on acquiring buy-in of administration and campus affiliates, improving program surveys, addressing budget cuts and decreasing high staff turnovers.

s point of view. The main source of information used in this analysis is gathered from a questionnaire. Hundred and twenty six users of EMR selected voluntarily and randomly from the hospital staffs are included in this survey. The hospital staffs including physicians, nurses, clinicians, administrative clerks and technicians were included in this survey. Implementation for certain medical tasks and efficiency of using these tasks in EMR are evaluated. The advantages and disadvantages of the system were surveyed from the user'
s point of view. In spite of the fact that health care professionals understand the benefits of electronic medical records, barriers to the use of EMR are also important for the current impediments in EMR introduction. While the successful applications of EMR systems are evident in western word, the implementation of EMR to a hospital information system is a new topic in Turkey. There are mainly attempts to convert the paper-based medical record systems to the fully automated electronic record systems. Our study is a pioneering attempt to analyze the users&

This study was completed following extensive Language Development Specialist (LDS) Training in Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) between 1992 and 1994. A post training survey designed by this researcher was mailed to all (303) teachers and administrators/elementary and secondary who participated in LDS training during this time. This survey asked participants to identify training information applicable to daily work tasks. One hundred seven teachers and twenty-four administrators completed this survey. The survey was divided into four sections. Sections I and II were based on the Nine LDS competencies. A 2 x 2 Chi Square Test of Association was completed for this data. Significant differences (p. $<$ 05) were obtained for teacher and administrator responses for changes made/observed in the classroom for planning lessons, teaching strategies, selecting materials, testing, and certifying limited/non-English (LEP/NEP) speaking students. Both groups noted some to significant understanding for background/culture/language of LEP/NEP students and differences between bilingual education and English as a second language. Section III was a sentence completion task. These items were: (a) most valuable information received from LDS training, (b) information of little or no value, (c) items to include/exclude in future LDS type training programs, and (d) additional comments. Improved understanding of second language acquisition was most valuable information, history and court cases was of little or/no value. Future LDS type training should include practical application to daily work tasks and exclude statistics and theory. Additional comments emphasized pressure from SUSD to complete LDS training and pass the state exam. Section IV asked participants to identify their grade level and date(s) of LDS training. Data beyond grade level was not tabulated since less than 2% identified date(s) of LDS training. Post-training feedback was the basis of this investigation. This promotes reflective thought and allows participants to more accurately identify information applicable to daily work tasks. Implications for future research include increased practical information and employee input in staff training design, content, and presentation.

Ever increasing complexity of software systems, and distributed and dynamic nature of today’s enterprise level computing have initiated the demand for more self aware, flexible and robust systems, where human beings could delegate much of their work to software agents. The Semantic Web presents new opportunities for enabling, modeling, sharing and reasoning with knowledge available on the web. These opportunities are made possible through the formal representation of knowledge domains with ontologies. Semantic Web is a vision of World Wide Web (WWW) level knowledge representation system where each piece of information is equipped with well defined meaning; enabling software agents to understand and process that information. This, in turn, enables people and software agents to work in a more smooth and collaborative way. In this thesis we have first presented a detailed overview of Semantic web vision by describing its fundamental building blocks which constitutes famous layered architecture of Semantic Web. We have discussed the mile stones Semantic Web vision has achieved so far in the areas of research, education and industry and on the other hand we have presented some of the social, business and technological barriers in the way of this vision to become reality. We have also evaluated that how Semantic vision is effecting some of the current technological and research areas like Web Services, Software Agents, Knowledge Engineering and Grid Computing. In the later part of thesis we have focused on problem of ontology mapping for agents on semantic web. We have precisely defined the problem and categorized it on the basis of syntactic and semantic aspects. Finally we have produced a survey of the current state of the art in ontology mapping research. In the survey we have presented some of the selected ontology mapping systems and described their functionality on the basis of the way they approach the problem, their efficiency, effectiveness and the part of problem space they cover. We consider that the survey of current state of the art in ontology mapping will provide a solid basis for further research in this field.

Hart-Schubert, Patrice. „An evaluation of sensory comfort components of survey questionnaires used for indoor environment problems in buildings“. Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45051.

Annotation:
The efficacy of indoor environment evaluation is, in part, a function of the reliability and validity of the different measures used. This thesis presents results of a study, conducted in a building without known problems, which compares the reliability and validity of sensory comfort components from three well-known survey questionnaires. A review of literature reveals that sensory comfort theory draws upon many disciplines including, hedonics, psychometrics, and olfaction theory. The fundamental domains thermal, air quality, lighting, and acoustics and their dimensions are identified. The conceptual model integrates these theories underlying human response to sensory comfort.

The research questions involved in the selection of survey questionnaires are explored by examining sixteen indoor environment survey questionnaires. A meta-evaluation reveals that these questionnaires have three major functions, proactive, reactive, and re-evaluative studies.

Finally, the methods used to analyze survey questionnaires for reliability and validity are examined. An analysis of variance shows that the order in which questions were presented did not affect responses. The reliability of the measures tested ranged from poor to good. Examination of content and face validity by expert and untrained judges demonstrates inconsistencies in common or accepted meanings of the measures considered in evaluating the indoor environment. Analysis of construct validity indicates that not all survey questionnaire variables were categorized under their expected dimensions.

Contrary to advice found in the literature, this thesis suggests that the practice of combining items from different questionnaires is problematic. Finally, in buildings with known problems we can expect a relatively high degree of reliability and validity. However, the utility of such questionnaires in inventorying and assessing buildings without known problems will prove to be questionable.

Annotation:
This project studies how one should design a course evaluation survey used at the technological university, KTH. A single survey multi-platform approach has been used in the design stage, with the aim to develop an optimized survey for the two platforms mobile and PC. To clarify, instead of there being a solely mobile-oriented or PC-oriented design process, any design features implemented where considered in the greater scope of how they would fit both mobile devices and PC, thus providing a wider multi-platform optimization. The reason for undertaking the study was the perceived lacking mobile optimization of the current survey system, LEQ used at KTH. This was seen as a significant area of development due to rising numbers of mobile users globally, especially among younger generations. The survey was developed with the aim to have a high usability and providea positive user experience across the platforms. An iterative design process with three cycles of prototype testing focusing on the themes: grading systems, design features and usability was conducted. At the conclusion of each cycle, incremental improvements were made as a result of feedback from prototype testers and a new prototype was developed. Lastly, a final design was developed. During the comparison of the final design with the LEQ survey at the later stages of the study, not many significant differences were found, and non affecting the functionality of the survey. This can partly be explained by the simplistic nature of surveys. While a general PC optimization had been reached, the mobile optimization was still lacking. The study concluded that the multi-platform approach did not allow for a true mobile optimization. Any new features being implemented would have to be beneficial for both platforms, consequently, potential improvements which would result in a better mobile optimization could not be implemented if they were less suitable for to the PC. However, in a mobile oriented design process a mobile optimization could have been reached since any decision regarding design would only be judged as to whether they were beneficial for the user experience on mobile devices. The design of a truly mobile optimized survey could be an area for further research, both in regards to the design process itself and the final product.

Annotation:
A study of women's views of maternity services in the Northern Sydney Area Health Service was conducted as a result of the changing patterns of use of the Area's 7 obstetric hospitals. 340 primiparous women living in the Northern Sydney Area who had given birth in the previous six months were approached in Early Childhood Health Centres and asked to complete a survey exploring the factors influencing their choice of obstetric hospital, postnatal length of stay in hospital, and overall satisfaction with their choice of hospital. Of the 315 eligible women, 312 (99%) consented to participate and 297 (94%) completed the survey. Overall, reputation of the hospital and quality of nursing care were the most frequent reasons given for choice of hospital and there was some evidence that women selected different hospitals for distinct reasons. Women's postnatal length of stay ranged from less than 1 day to 11 days with an average of 5.3 days. Private patients stayed an average of 1 day longer than public patients, after adjusting for delivery type and pregnancy induced hypertension. There was little evidence that women in the Northern Sydney Area Health Service desire a shorter postnatal stay with the majority of women reporting they were satisfied with their length of stay. Overall, women displayed high levels of satisfaction with their choice of hospital; at least 90% of women attending all hospitals except one reported that they would choose the same hospital for the birth of another baby. This study provides valuable information, based on the experiences of the service users, to help guide the Northern Sydney Area Health Service in the provision of its maternity services to ensure they meet the changing needs of women and their families.

Reconnaissance survey (Phase Ia) provides the backbone to archaeological field methodology. Archaeological sites are typically discovered through reconnaissance techniques, more often via pedestrian survey and shovel probe testing. There is a lack of a consensus in the archaeological community on whether or not these techniques are effective as reconnaissance methodology. The following thesis evaluates these techniques' relative effectiveness at finding and preliminarily evaluating archaeological sites, the main objectives of reconnaissance. This study compares actual and simulated surveys using both techniques on a multi-component site in a woodland setting as well as addressing the cost-effectiveness of these techniques when estimating the time needed to complete them.
