Part of the Department of Philosophy’s Project concerned the inquiry into the students’ attitudes towards religion and transcendent entities. Parallelly with tracking these stands comes the attempt of tracking the changes that occured over the period of two semestres. In my final thesis I focus on process and implementation of project procedure. The main aim of this thesis is to show possibilities of how to work with projects in the nonprofit field of educational resort. The opening part is a summary of six chapters. I tried to summarize my own, as well as other theoretical knowledge and basic information concerning the branch of the project procedure, which are important for the following practical part of the thesis. I deal with individual phases of the project procedure, in which I explain terms such as project framework, the lifecycle of project, evaluation methods of projects, the use of information technology, risks that might appear in project procedure etc. Further in my thesis, which is very important, I focus on possibilities of project fundraising in schools. I present basic information about The European Business Academy in Decin, where I am employed. I also deal with options that teachers and students have to extend their education abroad, so called "the mobility of students and teachers". The main part of my thesis includes projects which are being prepared at The European Business Academy in Decin. As an example, I enclose a project which was conducted by students together with teachers and its implementation into use. The second project is a project objective which was not implemented. The third project is being processed and the fourth one has been approved. Another aim of my thesis is to show to other schools how to work with projects and give them a guideline how to involve not only teachers or other employees but also students. Since 2010 students of the final grade will create team projects and the process and defence of the project will be included in the final school-leaving examination.

AbstractApplying the PERMA model, several positive education projects were launched in pre-primary, primary, high schools, and universities in Hong Kong. The projects were guided by a six-level implementation process described as learn it, live it, reflect it, conceptualize it, apply it and embed it. The pre-primary school project focused on the character strengths of creativity, bravery, hope, love, altruism, honesty, gratitude, and forgiveness. The whole school positive education project in primary schools aimed to enhance the wellbeing of teachers and students, and involved teacher trainings, parent workshops, student activities, and a positive education curriculum. The high school project emphasized promoting optimism, hope, and character strengths, aiming to decrease students’ anxiety. The university project aimed to nurture and enhance the development of students’ positive emotions, relationships, purpose, accomplishments, engagement, and health. The projects were effective in increasing the wellbeing and decreasing the mental health problems of students. Characteristics of the positive education projects and factors affecting effectiveness of the projects are discussed and suggestions for future direction of positive education in Hong Kong are proposed.

Our engineering program includes a two-year capstone experience. At the beginning of this experience, students bid into projects by rank ordering first, second, and third choice projects. Students’ decisions for long term commitments, such as selecting a capstone team, use various forms of bounded rationality. When making a choice on which two year capstone project to select and rank, there may be many reasons why a particular student or set of students will pick a project. In this study, we looked across three years of project selection and ranking data using a competing hypothesis to gain insight into the reasons with the greatest explanatory power on why projects are chosen. Implication of what this means regarding the overall portfolio of projects is offered as well as how to craft projects and project descriptions such that they garner more student interest and can lead to more excitement and learning.

With the recommendation from ABET, each engineering student should go through a major engineering design experience and understand how to go from design specifications to a final artifact. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS) started automotive design projects including competition vehicles and proof of concept vehicles for its undergraduate students many years ago. These projects aim to provide practical engineering education to the students through vehicle design and fabrication with hands-on experience. The project lifecycle usually does not last longer than one year as it is governed by the competition and the academic cycle. With many years of experience supervising students, the best practice of guiding students learning through this engineering design project within one academic year is developed. Before each project, students will first go through training and apprenticeship. Such project usually starts with problem formulation that studies the requirements of vehicle for the competition and the resources available. The team of students will go from design specifications to a final vehicle prototype with generating alternatives, synthesizing, analyzing, fabrication, testing and evaluating. This method allows sustainability in vehicle design projects. NUS Eco-car project is used as a case study to illustrate the best practice. Our past experience showed that students trained in this project have strong practical and analytical skills and are able to manage and communicate in a team well.

Project-based learning is a widely adopted strategy and a preferred pedagogical tool in the undergraduate engineering curriculum. However, design-and-build engineering projects are open-ended, ill-defined, and quite complex so that students often feel quite overwhelmed by the imposed need to solve relatively challenging and practical problems within limited time and resources. Although there are virtually no right or wrong feasible design engineering project solutions, over the years, students’ design project submissions identify a number of students with mediocre design competencies. This indicates that there is a need for developing a pedagogical strategy designed for assisting the students in better preparing for undertaking the challenges of term design engineering projects. Hence, a special series of deliberately designed small-scale “mini” design projects has been developed to serve as “just-in-time” means for building-up the students’ skills required to successfully undertake the tasks of the respective larger-scale term design projects. This paper focuses on exploring this strategy and the different ways of its implementation into the engineering curriculum through three representative core design courses at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, respectively.

The present work aims at presenting a teaching innovation project, the B-SMART, which has been implemented at UIC Barcelona in the academic year 2018/19. Conceived as a project to respond to social demands, the B-SMART project aims at creating a collaborative environment and at strengthening the ties between companies (mainly targeted to SMEs, start-ups and NGOs) and the university. To do so, students work on real challenges or projects posed by companies. This approach helps students to better understand the theoretical concepts taught in class as well as to boost soft skills that will be required in their daily practice. In turn, companies gain access to new talent (students), fresh ideas, and the knowledge and infrastructures available at the university. In this study we explain the project and pay special attention to the first two projects solved through the B-SMART project. We use design thinking as the teaching method. Preliminary results show that both students and companies benefit from this experience.

Most of the engineering courses focus more on theory and very little on hands-on, project-based learning in the classroom. Integration of real-world engineering problems and applications in lower division engineering courses will produce engineering students, who will be technically sound and be able to execute and manage real-world projects, when they will do senior design projects in their final year of engineering study. To overcome the engineering design challenges we have developed iHOP (Ingenieŕia Hands on Project) and integrate it with our lower division engineering courses. iHOP has been developed to emphasis the design component at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) Engineering Physics curriculum and the project is now an integral part of Introduction to Engineering class. The iHOP project is one that is challenging, fun, requires teamwork, associated with the engineering material being studied, low cost, and doable in a limited amount of time. The experience from iHOP project motivates our freshman students to choose a better senior design project in senior year of their college career. The objectives of the iHOP projects are — to have students develop teamwork skills, and to teach students basic engineering design concepts in a complementary format to the traditional lecture. Various techniques related to team selection, encouraging teamwork, incorporation of engineering topics, keeping costs down, project results presentations, and gathering feedback from students will also be presented in this paper. Integrating iHOP Project with Introduction to Engineering class helped us to improve our retention effort in the engineering department.

A well formed senior design project is known to have significant benefits in terms of project outcome, student motivation, team cohesiveness, engagement, and student learning. Defining a good problem statement, forming a team of compatible and appropriately skilled students, and selecting an appropriate faculty mentor are critical aspects of project formation. Therefore, students in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University are encouraged to suggest project ideas, form teams, and have them approved by the course coordinator before the semester starts. While there is significant literature on senior design projects, most of the existing work is focused on activities after the problem is defined and the teams are formed. There is a lack of mechanisms and tools to guide the project formation phase in senior design projects, which makes it challenging for students and faculty to collaboratively develop and refine project ideas and to establish appropriate teams. To address this challenge, we have implemented an online collaboration tool to share, discuss and obtain feedback on project ideas, and to facilitate collaboration among students and faculty prior to the start of the semester. Through an online survey and questionnaire to students, we are exploring the impact of the collaboration tool on the senior design project formation process. In this paper we present the design of the tool and the results from our ongoing study in the senior design class at Purdue Mechanical Engineering.

Most computing programs still devote little time to software life cycle development, software processes, quality issues, team skills, and other areas of software engineering essential to effective commercial software development. A teaching project was developed and implemented by accommodating knowledge and practices that are applicable to most projects in the area of project management and in the area of software development to Information Systems (IS) students. This approach is relevant to IS model curricula and is in accordance with IS2002.10 project management and practice course guidelines. The rationale behind this approach is to overcome the relative lack of experience of IS students in many aspects of project management and software development by introducing them how to plan, organize, and control software development projects, and to help students strengthen good software engineering practices prior to entering IT industry and become more efficient. We present results of a case study based on a survey conducted in an IT Systems Development course. Survey results show that including topics on project management and Software Engineering best practices lab into an IT Systems Development course helped students (a) deal with non-technical issues of software projects, (b) develop their ability to communicate clearly with team members, and (c) overcome their lack of experience in many aspects of project management and software development.

Grading software projects submitted by students can become a heavy and time-consuming task, which for many students, can result in delayed feedback provided to them. Additionally, one would like to allow students to evaluate themselves early their projects before submitting the final version for grading. This paper presents a solution that improves the grading process of student projects not only for lecturers, but also for students. In our approach, we adopt a test-driven development methodology to provide a clear benchmark of the course project implementation. Our approach allows students to self-evaluate their progress at any moment, while lecturers can use it to automate the grading process. GitHub Classroom is used as a supporting tool to allow students to retrieve and implement their projects from the same initial skeleton project including the tests, and lecturers to retrieve the student projects and evaluate them automatically. The results show that test-driven development is a viable solution to be applied in an academic environment to improve the grading process. This study also shows that courses in Information Technology area could use our approach to increase learning and teaching efficiency.
