Undocumented immigrants are an exploited and disenfranchised faction of society that garner counterfactual attitudes by the public. This study aims to dispel myths held among the public by contesting fiction with facts. First, I argue that media sources and misinformation have culpability in inciting the publics' misguided perceptions about undocumented immigrants. For example, the images propelled to viewers reproduce moral panics, stratification, subjugation, social injustice and the fallacious notion that Mexican‟s are representative of all Hispanic unauthorized immigrants. This thesis then examines the public opinion responses of participants from the CBS and New York Times monthly survey poll of May 2007, compared to academic and government sources on health care, terrorism, and economics. The analysis concludes that participants‟ responses reveal misconceptions on the usage of health care by undocumented immigrants; the threat of terrorism as a means to deny Hispanics citizenship; the economic impact of cost to benefit analysis of the undocumented; and that Mexicans are not representative of all undocumented immigrant groups.

Poverty in the United States has been widely explored, but very seldom does research consider the impacts of poverty among undocumented immigrants. As a result, policymakers are unable to account for or accommodate the unique needs of undocumented immigrants. Using Dalton's theory of the psychology of poverty, this case study explored the experiences of undocumented immigrants in Immokalee, Florida to better understand how the current policy landscape impacts their existence and livelihoods. The data were collected through 18 interviews with undocumented immigrants and a review of government data related to poverty among this population from the United States Census Bureau, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Bureau of Labor. All data were inductively coded and subjected to thematic analysis. Findings indicate that these undocumented immigrants in South Florida experienced a range of social and economic depravities, including stress, fear, and anxiety as well as inadequate housing and poor health and nutrition, particularly among children, all of which are consistent with Dalton's theory of the psychology of poverty. Another key finding reinforces previous research that undocumented workers were subject to inadequate working conditions and were at risk of exploitation by employers, particularly in the agricultural industry. The positive social change implications stemming from this study include recommendations to policymakers in South Florida to develop policies to alleviate uncertainty for undocumented immigrants, including creating policy to specifically address inadequate working conditions in order to reduce the potential exploitation of socio-economically marginalized workers.

La migration chinoise de travail en France depuis la fin des années 1990 est marquée par un processus de féminisation et de prolétarisation. Cette thèse étudie ce phénomène migratoire dans la manucure, et retrace l’expansion d’une niche économique, ethnique et genrée dans les années 2010 en région parisienne. De deux à trois personnes sur le marché du soin des ongles, ces femmes y sont passées à environ 1 500 travailleuses 15 ans plus tard. Leur présence s’est étendue à d’autres quartiers, régions, voire pays européens.Pourquoi ces femmes, se sont-elles tournées massivement vers cette activité professionnelle aux conditions de travail précaires ? Pourquoi ces travailleuses souvent sans-papiers se sont-elles coupées de la sécurité des réseaux traditionnels des enclaves chinoises parisiennes, qui leur permettent de vivre et de travailler, même sans parler français ?Notre enquête statistique et ethnographique a été menée entre 2014 et 2020 auprès de centaines de manucures seules et primo-arrivantes. Outre l’examen du contexte macro-structurel expliquant la féminisation de l’émigration chinoise, cette thèse privilégie une approche par études de cas. L’imaginaire sur la mobilité de travail transnationale ainsi que sur la France a été questionné pour reconstituer les projets migratoires de 89 manucures en France. L’enquête a établi trois profils-types, les « anciennes ouvrières délaissées », les « travailleuses précaires mobiles », et les « migrantes professionnelles », associés à trois vagues de migration.La thèse montre le caractère ambivalent de « l’enclave ethnique », qui joue le rôle de « sas », mais dans laquelle ces femmes se retrouvent soumises à un endettement moral et financier, ainsi qu’à un contrôle social. Trouvant leurs premiers emplois et logements grâce aux réseaux régionaux chinois en France (laoxiang 老乡), ces femmes parviennent grâce à la manucure à s’en extraire, mais restent sans-papiers. Elles ont construit un réseau nouveau de femmes issues de toute la Chine qui travaillent pour des patrons non-chinois. Elles se forment entre elles, de façon horizontale, avec le shituzhi, un compagnonnage entre « sœurs » (jiemei 姐妹) qui assure une place dans un salon de manucure et une maîtrise des dernières techniques à la mode. Le logement de ces femmes constitue un déclassement mais assure une liberté vis-à-vis des règles sociales (guanxi 关系), et leur vie frugale mais bien organisée leur permet, hors des jugements traditionnels, de préparer leur retour en Chine. Néanmoins, ces femmes en situation irrégulière y subissent une exploitation comme main-d’œuvre bon marché. En 2014, une grève médiatisée soutenue par des syndicats français suivie d’un procès et d’une propagation des revendications à plusieurs boutiques de manucure nous permet de décrire l’agentivité de ces travailleuses précaires. Dans un salon à Paris un retard de paiement et une rumeur de fermeture a permis le rapprochement des manucures avec des coiffeuses sans-papiers originaires d’Afrique et une lutte collective devenue un modèle pour des grèves similaires dans d’autres salons. Son issue, victorieuse, a permis de condamner les gérants pour traite d’êtres humains en 2018, des régularisations, des améliorations des conditions de travail et le versement des salaires. Toutefois, certaines, déjà uberisées et moins expérimentées dans la lutte syndicale, a peu gagné. La modernisation de la niche ethnique, de l’activité et de son image sur internet, et l’extension des services, autorisent l’espoir d’une normalisation des conditions de travail, d’une reconnaissance des compétences, et la poursuite de l’activité au retour en Chine, où le travail du care est en plein essor. Cette thèse explique les mobilités spatiales et sociales des travailleuses et met en évidence le coût humain de l’illégalité et les ressources que construisent les femmes migrantes précarisées
Chinese labor migration to France since the late 1990s has been marked by a process of feminization, but also of proletarianization. This thesis studies this migratory phenomenon through the cases of women working in the manicure sector in Paris and in the Paris region, and traces the emergence and expansion of an ethnic and gendered economic niche in the 2010s. From two to three people in the nail care market at the beginning of 2000, these women have grown to around 1,500 workers in the Paris region fifteen years later. Their presence, initially concentrated in a single Parisian district, has spread widely to other French regions, and even to other European countries. How did this expansion come about? Why do these women -working in extremely precarious conditions- still join this professional activity on a massive scale? Why do these mostly undocumented workers cut themselves off from the relative security of the traditional networks of Parisian Chinese enclaves, which enable the non-French-speaking migrants to live and work, even if they are undocumented? The present research is based on a statistical and ethnographic survey conducted between 2014 and 2020 among Chinese women recently arrived alone in France. In addition to examining the macro-structural context -the influence of social-economic and political changes that explain the feminization of Chinese emigration- this thesis favors a case-study approach and proposes an analysis of the configurations of these women’s trajectories. The formulation of questions on the imagination about transnational labor mobility and about France enabled us to reconstruct the formation of the migratory project of 89 manicurists working in France. The survey also enabled us to draw up three profiles: “abandoned former state workers”, “mobile precarious workers” and “professional migrants”. This typology provides a parallel account of the three waves of migration that occurred in quick succession in the 2000s, and which accompanied the emergence of the professional manicure niche. The thesis shows the ambivalent character of the “ethnic enclave”, which acts as a “sas”, but in which these women find themselves subjected to moral and financial indebtedness, inducing a rather restrictive social control. Initially finding employment and housing through the traditional networks of Chinese emigration, structured by the region of origin (laoxiang 老乡), these women manage to extricate themselves from these relationships through manicuring, while fighting on their own against the administrative difficulties posed by their undocumented status. Over time, they have built up a new network of women from different parts of China, working for non-Chinese employers. They also train each other, using a horizontal training and mutual aid system known as shituzhi, a system of companionship between “sisters” (jiemei 姐妹) that ensures a place in a nail salon and a high level of mastery of nail techniques, which is supposed to respond to fashion, which is constantly changing. The nail technicians' housing, often downgraded compared to their standard of living before emigration, nevertheless ensures a form of freedom outside of the social rules in China (guanxi 关系), and their frugal but well-organized life enables them, outside the judgments of Chinese society, to prepare for a better situation on their return to China. Nevertheless, these undocumented immigrant women, who work in an irregular administrative situation, are exposed to exploitation as cheap workers in the manicure niche. The story of a high-profile strike led by these women and supported by French unions, which later ended in a court case with a wide spread of demands for professional and migrants rights, enables us to highlight the agentivity and inventiveness of these precarious workers

The social exclusion of undocumented immigrants is a global phenomenon that concerns the social work profession. Despite laws that protect human rights, undocumented immigrants in many countries are facing multiple challenges associated with a lack of legal status, including in Sweden. This study aims to examine how the legal and other associated barriers act as exclusion mechanisms against undocumented immigrants in Sweden when accessing services. Data collection through a qualitative method, involving semi-structured interviews with professionals engaged in supporting this group, was carried out. The results were analyzed by using a deductive thematic analysis, applying the social exclusion theory, as well as using earlier research on the subject. The findings revealed the existence of structural barriers that exclude undocumented immigrants regarding accessing services; where civil society has intervened to give support. The findings also reflect that it has been difficult for social workers to act on the situation.

This study examines the ways in which the education of children of undocumented immigrants is impacted by their parents’ undocumented status as well as their personal documentation status. In this thesis, I shed light on the experiences of fifteen college students and alumni who are variously-documented, including: undocumented students, DACA students, and documented students with undocumented family members. Drawing on these experiences, I argue that students’ education is impacted by legal and social exclusion, family stress and psychosocial impacts, personal legal status, and a lack of services for undocumented students and children of undocumented immigrants in educational institutions. I also argue that mothers and other family members lessen these challenges by providing students with the support and encouragement to complete a higher education. I conclude this study by making specific recommendations for what K- higher education institutions can do to better serve undocumented and documented students within mixed-status families.

Undocumented immigrants have historically been excluded from the medical care system. This study explored the attitudes and experiences of undocumented Latino immigrants when seeking medical services in the San Bernardino County. It aimed to share the stories of undocumented immigrants that often go untold and provide valuable insight into the needs and concerns of this population. The exploratory study utilized a qualitative approach through interviews. Data was collected through in person and over the phone interviews, which were then transcribed and analyzed using a constant comparative method. The findings of this study identified barriers and challenges faced by undocumented immigrants including a lack of equal access to healthcare, a lack of knowledge in navigating the healthcare system, stigma and discrimination, language, finances, culture, and fear. Both negative and positive experiences were shared, along with advice provided by participants for undocumented immigrants. This study carried important implications for medical professionals, agencies, and policy makers to better address the needs and concerns of undocumented patients. Research recommendations included implementing programs based off this study’s findings and exploring the attitudes and experiences of this population when seeking mental health services. Further research is encouraged to work towards dismantling the barriers faced by the undocumented immigrant population.

This research examined if differences in social categories between two groups, natural—born U.S. citizens and undocumented immigrants with deferred action (DACA) led to differences in self-perceptions at work in areas such as Occupational Self-Efficacy (OSE), Organization Based Self-Esteem (OBSE), and Perceived Employability (PE). Additionally, the effect of Perceived Supervisor Similarity (PSS) on these relationships was also observed. Results showed significant differences only in PE with the DACA group having an unexpectedly higher level than the citizen group. The model was supported as OSE, OBSE, and PSS all significantly predicted PSS in both groups. Lastly, interaction effects were only found in the citizen group with PSS moderating the relationship between OSE and OBSE predicting PE. Specifically, PSS affected levels of PE at high levels of OSE and at low levels of OBSE. Lastly, I explored how temporal self-appraisals may have lead the DACA group to be less of an out-group along with additional implications to this field of research with this population.

Widespread media reports have described an increase in heat-related deaths among undocumented immigrant border crossers in Southern Arizona in recent years. The factual basis and important risk factors associated with these deaths have not been well studied. Although, the most common cause of heat fatalities is environmental exposure during heat waves, deserts of the southwestern USA are known for temperatures that exceed this threshold for 30 days or more. Heat-related fatalities, however, have been and continue to be rare among residents of the region. Undocumented immigration across the US-Mexico border into Arizona has likely been robust for decades, although accurate measures of the volume are not available due to its covert nature. This thesis research focuses on the occurrence and distribution of heat deaths among undocumented US-Mexico border crossers in Pima County, Arizona. Implications of this work include improving future research, informing public health policy and planning of prevention strategies.

The aim of this research was to explore and describe the challenges of 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants with regards to preserving their family and identity while in South Africa. Three main objectives identified which were: (i) To explore and describe what family and identity means to the 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants. (ii) To explore and describe 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants' challenges with regards to their family life and identity upon arrival in South Africa. (iii) To explore and describe 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants' challenges at preserving and maintaining their family relations and identity while in South Africa. A qualitative study utilising explorative and descriptive research designs was employed in a bid to answer the research question, namely: How do 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants preserve their family and identity while in South Africa? Data were collected by means of unstructured individual interviews and transcribed verbatim. Initially, six participants were purposively selected and they in turn directed the researcher through snowball sampling to the other nine participants who fit the research criteria until data saturation had been attained. The interviews were analysed according to Creswell's (2008) steps as well as guidelines for phenomenological data. Data were also analyzed to ensure its dependability, conformability, transferability and credibility. The researcher adhered to ethical considerations of confidentiality, self-determination, no harm, as well as beneficence. From the data emerged four main themes i.e. • 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants in SA's challenges in preserving their families • 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants in SA's challenges in preserving their identity 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants' challenges relating to their journey to SA • challenges experienced by 'undocumented' Zimbabwean immigrants during their stay in SA. Based on these findings, recommendations were made to social workers, social service professionals, governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations on how to mitigate the challenges that come with 'undocumentation.'

This research study explored how undocumented immigrants define and experience mental health. A review of literature about undocumented Latinx immigrants emphasized that even in high distress, this population underutilizes mental health services. Data were analyzed through the lens of Latinx Critical Race Theory in an effort to conceptualize the role of multiple marginalization on the mental health state of undocumented Latinx immigrants. Eight undocumented Mexican immigrants in one city in a southern state were interviewed using semi-structured, open-ended questions. A transcendental phenomenology method was used to explore how this population experiences mental health. Data analysis revealed five themes that suggest that this population has a negative experience with mental health. The negative experience with mental health was influenced by family, community, and political climate. Additional findings are also discussed, along with implications for counselor education and clinical practice, limitations, and areas for further research.

Background: Although prior research has established intimate partner violence (IPV) as a widespread public health problem in the U.S., little is known about IPV prevalence and help seeking behaviors in undocumented Latina immigrants Purpose: This study seeks to contribute new knowledge to the study of IPV by describing IPV prevalence, help seeking behaviors, and health outcomes of undocumented Spanish-speaking immigrant women who have experienced lifetime intimate partner violence. . Methods: Two hundred undocumented Spanish-speaking women were recruited from urban healthcare centers to complete a survey about women's health to assess IPV, major depressive disorder (MDD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and health-related quality (HRQL) of life. Qualitative interviews were completed with community health workers serving this population and immigrant survivors of violence. Results: Sixty-nine (34.5%) of the women in the sample screened positive for lifetime IPV and of these women, 56.6% sought help from either formal or informal sources as a result of the violence. Of the entire sample, 41.5% endorsed major depressive disorder and 16% endorsed post-traumatic stress disorder. In the unadjusted logistic regression models, IPV survivors were more likely to endorse MDD and PTSD and report low mental health HRQL scores (OR: 2.27, 3.45, 2.19, respectively). In fully adjusted models, only the association between IPV and PTSD remained significant (OR: 4.143, CI: 1.21-14.24). Discussion: The findings highlight several help-seeking barriers among undocumented Spanish-speaking immigrant women who are the survivors of IPV. Language barriers and fears of family separation resulting from deportation and loss of child custody are unique help-seeking barriers for undocumented immigrants. There was an overall high prevalence of MDD and PTSD in the sample population, and an increased risk of PTSD in IPV survivors compared with non-survivors. Our findings highlight the need for quality mental health and trauma-informed services tailored to the needs of undocumented Spanish-speaking immigrant women, including increased access to mental health services in primary healthcare settings. Health and social service organizations serving this population should use this information to inform IPV treatment and prevention programs for women.

In the recent political climate, the debate regarding undocumented immigrants and what, if anything, they are entitled to in the US has been incredibly contentious. In the bioethics portion of this thesis, I examine two of the major frameworks for distributive justice, cosmopolitanism and the political conception, address the criminal aspect of undocumented immigration, and suggest a switch from a focus on criminality to focusing on the forces that incentivize undocumented immigration to determine the type of claim undocumented immigrants have to health resources. In the biology portion, I examine three case studies: respiratory tract infection, HIV/AIDS, and tuberculosis to illustrate health disparities among undocumented populations. I conclude that based on their participation in shared social cooperation and the unspoken shadow contract of companies incentivizing undocumented immigrants to come to the US to provide cheap labor, undocumented immigrants do have a right to access healthcare in the US. However, we should account for risk factors such as other marginalized identities, country of origin, and rate and methods of disease transmission when determining exactly what that care should look like.

Over 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the shadows all across America. They live with the fear of being separated from their families and the risk of being detained or deported back to a country they escaped. This thesis explores ideas of home, safety, and belonging through different elements in architecture, utilized to create welcoming and safe spaces. The community and health center is designed to reach, support, and empower immigrants, while acting as a new home where immigrants access a variety of health, education, and social programs. The project reuses and re-purposes an abandoned building, which was originally designed to welcome immigrants, by carving out historic spaces while creating a new addition that gives it new life. To create a more welcoming experience, the existing brick building is integrated with the new through the use of natural materials, color, and the addition of large openings that allow natural light to fill the interiors. The design of large gathering areas both inside and outside allow people to come together and create a sense of community. Located in the center of immigrant neighborhoods, the proposed community and health center acts as a new beacon of hope and tranquility for immigrants in the District of Columbia.

Everyday more than 11 million undocumented children and adults face the fear of being separated from their families and the risk of being placed in caged-like cells called immigrant detention centers. Rather than having more spaces that criminalize and treat immigrants inhumanely, this thesis seeks to design a space that welcomes and supports undocumented immigrants. A proposed community and health center is designed to reach, support, and empower immigrants, while acting as a new home where immigrants could access a variety of health, education, and social programs. The project reuses and repurposes a section of an abandoned building, originally built to provide housing and health services to immigrants, and introduces a new addition with the goal to preserve and continue its history as a place for immigrants. In order to create a more welcoming and safe experience, the design of the proposed building integrates three different strategies. First, the integration of sustainable natural materials and warm colors in the structure of the new addition and the interiors of the existing building. Second, the integration of large operable openings that frame views of the exterior landscape and allow natural light and fresh air to fill the interiors. Lastly, the integration of gathering spaces in the landscape and interiors that allow people to come together and create a sense of community. The proposed community and health center would become a new beacon of hope and tranquility for undocumented immigrants that live with fear and face different obstacles due to their legal status.

This dissertation summarizes 22 months of field research beginning February 2015 and ending October 2016 among Nashville's undocumented Hispanic community. The goal of this project was to understand and identify the barriers this population encounters in utilizing the U.S. legal system using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Initial research consisted of formal, recorded individual and group interviews of 26 undocumented Hispanics and 15 key informants who work closely with Nashville's undocumented community. In addition, hundreds of other undocumented immigrants were observed and informally interviewed during this time. Once saturation was reached in the interviews, the qualitative prong of the research ended. All recorded interviews were transcribed and coded and various themes were identified. The qualitative data revealed eight common themes barring the undocumented community's utilization of the legal system. These were: 1) fear of deportation, 2) structural barriers, 3) cultural barriers, 4) real and perceived discrimination, 5) unawareness of legal rights, 6) unawareness of legal processes and structure, 7) lack of community empowerment, and 8) lack of specific legal self-efficacy.

To confirm the qualitative findings, a 69-item survey instrument was prepared and administered to a non-randomized sample of 350 undocumented Hispanic immigrants living in the Nashville area. The survey's quantitative data confirmed the existence of these eight barriers in varying degrees among the respondents. The survey data indicated the isolated effect of each identified barrier varied amongst individuals based on such factors as life experience, current political climate, and demographics. This research indicated that there is no lone barrier keeping the undocumented community from utilizing the U.S. legal system. Rather, it is the intersectionality of these barriers working in unison, which bars Nashville's undocumented community from utilizing the legal system.

During the last decade, immigration operations have drastically increased in the United States. Between 2009 and 2015, the Obama administration deported a record high of 2.4 million unauthorized immigrants (Homeland Security, 2016). Due to the amplified number of migrants being deported, the number of individuals in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers has also increased. Consequently, this phenomenon has raised concerns regarding undocumented migrants’ access to medical services in these facilities. This research project was conducted in order to assess the quality of medical and health care services in ICE detention centers in the state of Arizona. It also examined whether the ICE operational manuals and detention standards on medical care were being followed and were consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The findings indicated that ICE was not compliant with a major portion of their Performance-Based National Detention Standards on medical care and thus, were violating the basic human rights of undocumented immigrants in detention centers as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Out of all fifty states, Oregon has the ninth highest population of undocumented immigrants as a proportion of the state's total population. I conducted 20 formal and informal interviews with undocumented Latino/a immigrants living in Eugene and Springfield in order to find out how these immigrants maneuver the system in order to acquire housing, work, social resources, and other things that they need to survive. These interviews ultimately revealed that immigrants use social capital to circumvent these barriers and that the largest barriers that they face to survival and integration all ultimately revolve around a lack of access to a government issued photo ID/driver's license and language barriers. After conducting these interviews and researching how other jurisdictions have worked to integrate immigrants, I offer specific local planning and public policy recommendations for how to collaboratively integrate undocumented Latino/a immigrants into our community.

Latino immigrants have a strong presence in Southern, California. Although the Latino population can be attributed with possessing significant strengths and resiliency, their unique barriers as to legal status, language, and culture, have led to the researchers’ developing an interest on how undocumented immigrant status affects family reunification and service delivery within the child welfare system. The following research study focuses on evaluating how undocumented immigration status affects family reunification and service delivery in child welfare. It seeks to answer how current case work practice addresses the needs of undocumented Latino immigrant families that become involved within the child welfare system and how their undocumented immigration legal status impacts the reunification process and the receipt of services within the community. For the purpose of this study, an urban Southern California child welfare agency servicing a large population of immigrant Latinos was utilized. Using the constructivist paradigm, researchers interviewed ten children’s social service workers that possessed a mixture of knowledge, experience, and insight as to this population. The study found that undocumented Latino immigrants faced barriers related to their poor acculturation, that affected their family reunification. For instance, not understanding the English language, not understanding child abuse laws, limited access to culturally appropriate services, and social workers’ limited knowledge of working with undocumented Latino immigrant clients were barriers faced by this population. The findings in this study can be utilized by the child welfare agency to improve cultural awareness trainings for child welfare workers, work towards increasing culturally sensitive service availability, and advance policy.

The study was qualitative in nature and concentrated on illegal Zimbabweans and South Africans residing in Western burg(RDP side),Greenside,Lethuli Park,buite and bok streets, Department of health and Social welfare, Department of Labour and the Department of Housing. The area of study was Polokwane Municipality under the Capricorn district. The research findings confirmed that illegal immigrants have negative impacts on the provision of housing, job opportunities and health facilities in Limpopo Province as many respondents indicated that illegal immigrants were residing in RDP houses, all of them have access to health facilities and most of them were employed but only pay tax through the purchasing of goods and commodities for use and resale in the country and back in Zimbabwe.

Research studies have pointed to specific challenges for undocumented Latino immigrants including exploitation in the workplace (Stoddard, 1976), denial of health care (Angel, Frias & Hill, 2005; Passel, 2005) and lack of access to higher education (Seif, 2004). In addition, fear is never far from their consciousness. Fear of being identified as illegal and faced with possible arrest and deportation are realities for undocumented Latino immigrants. Both work and home are unsafe, particularly because of immigration raids by federal agents. In addition they are stigmatized by mainstream society (Padilla & Perez, 2003). Even the word "undocumented" has been used interchangeably with words like "illegal" and "alien" suggesting criminal behavior. These hardships make it difficult for these immigrants to become part of mainstream society and create barriers to opportunities. All of these factors should logically discourage Latin Americans from immigrating to the United States. However, both the documented and undocumented Latino populations in the United States continue to increase. Although the situation of new Latino immigrants, especially those who are undocumented, seems extremely difficult, there is something unexplained occurring that has not been accounted for in current research that allows them to survive these hardships. In addition, there is a gap in information about the immigration process gathered from immigrants themselves. Therefore, this study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to learn from undocumented immigrants about their experiences when they first came to the United States and how they negotiate their situation while living in the United States. The major findings of this study offer an inside look into the world of undocumented Latino immigrants. The obstacles these immigrants face were language barriers, limited education and unfair wages at work. On the other hand, they also identify facilitators that were helpful during their initial transition into the U.S such as getting help in finding a job, knowing someone in the United States before immigrating, being connected to support networks, and receiving support from others who shared their struggles. However, these findings do not reflect the whole story. Even though most of these Latino immigrants underwent stress and adversity as new undocumented immigrants, the study shows how they transformed their suffering using their personal strengths and drawing on support from a close-knit community. At the same time they maintained their cultural identity both in their immigrant community and within the larger community where they resided. An additional factor which contributed to their survival was that this particular community is unique in preserving the different cultures of ethnic groups rather than fusing them into a "melting pot." Recommendations for practice include using a strengths perspective with clients and community; recommendations for teaching include using interdisciplinary educational strategies and involving students in experiential learning experiences with immigrants. Additional recommendation for policy and research are made.

SOCIAL SUPPORT AS A BUFFER OF ACCULTURATIVE STRESS: A STUDY OF MARITAL DISTRESS AMONG UNDOCUMENTED, MEXICAN IMMIGRANT MEN by Douglas Costa de Andrade Ribeiro Immigration trends in the United States have changed drastically in the last 20 years. Starting in the 1990’s the majority of immigrants have originated from Latin American, with most emigrating from Mexico. Men, some of whom are undocumented, have driven this new wave of immigrants. These new Mexican immigrants have bypassed traditional receiving sites across the U.S. Mexican border and settled in non-traditional sites in the southern U.S. (Kiang, Grzywacz, Marin, Arcury, and Quandt, 2010). They face increased difficulties adjusting to life in the U.S. due to separation from family and spouses, lack of established social support networks in the U.S., and marginalization. Difficulties adapting to a new culture combined with lack of social support have been associated with significant mental health problems in this population (Hiott, Grzywacz, Arcury, & Quandt, 2006). This study explored the relationship between acculturative stress and marital satisfaction, as well as the protective (buffering) role of social support in a sample of 125 undocumented, married, Mexican American men. The following instruments were used in this study: (a) The Social, Attitudinal, Familial, and Environmental Scale (Mena, Padilla, & Maldonado, 1987), (b) the Social Support Questionnaire (Acuna & Bruner, 1999; Sarason, Levine, Bashan, & Sarason, 1983), and (c) the Global Distress Scale of the Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised (Negy & Snyder, 1997). Results indicated that high levels of acculturative stress and low levels of social support were significantly associated with higher levels of marital distress. However, results did not support the hypothesis that social support acted as a buffer (moderator) against the effects of high acculturative stress on marital distress. These findings suggest that interventions with undocumented Mexican immigrant men should focus on assessing and treating acculturative stressors as well as aiding/advocating for the development and strengthening of social support networks.

This research has two objectives: to explore the ways documented and undocumented Brazilian migrants living and working in London and Milan. The aim is to analyses Brazilian migrants’ accounts the full range of entrance, survival, integration and legalisation strategies. The second objective analyses the role of transnational activities between Brazilian’s documented and undocumented living in two different cities of Europe: Milan and London. Few studies in Europe have focused on groups coming from the same place of origin and residing in different cities in comparative studies. It is this international comparison that makes this research original. It was collected 40 In-depth interviews with documented and undocumented Brazilian migrants split in: Milan (20) and London (20). Starting from the point of view of the migrant, this study provided information of everyday experience of documented and undocumented Brazilian immigrants in London and Milan and to analyses the transitional political, economic and socio cultural activities. Compare documented and undocumented migrants whether they live, work and survive. This dissertation considers the various social, cultural, political, and economic activities of documented and undocumented Brazilian in receiving context and analyses this experience as further process for survive, regularised and integrate. Results from this thesis show that there are differences between documented and undocumented brazilian migrants in both London and Milan, and that undocumented in both countries make use of fake documents as strategy to get a job and health care.

Several groups are working to help migrants by providing them with essential items and services, housing, and legal advice. Drawing on ethnographic findings, this work presents a situated perspective of how citizen responders utilize technological systems to provide relief to those affected by the immigration crisis. Often, these citizens with common goals come together to form organizations. This study investigates how social media and technology support on-the-ground work, advocacy work, care-work, and invisible work of these organizations. Further, I highlight how technological systems fail organizations and how the emergence of care-work replaced these systems. Finally, I make design recommendations to social media and technological systems' design to boost the efficacy of collective crisis response by citizens.

Young adults between the ages of 16 and 30 are typically at the stage of their life when they should be transitioning from school, gaining employability skills, and entering the workforce (Settersten et al., 2005; van Gennep, 1960). An estimated 1.3 million undocumented, DACA eligible youth are currently in this transitional life stage (Hipsman, Gómez-Aguiñaga, & Capps, 2016), and another 80,000-90,000 will enter this stage each year (Batalova et al., 2014) where their opportunities for gaining skills and quality legal employment will impact their futures (Becker, 1992; Schultz, 1961). Struggling to find a path towards meaningful careers, these young adults know that if they are not able to gain additional education, training, and quality work they will be trapped in an underground society, working in under-the-table jobs that are way below their potential, education, and skills abilities, and are ultimately unable to escape poverty and support themselves and their families (Anguiano, 2011; Bank-Muñoz, 2009; Bernstein & Blazer, 2008; Burman, 2013; Gildersleeve, 2010; Gonzales, 2007, 2008, 2009b, 2011a; Gonzales & Chavez, 2012; Hudson, 2012; Padrón, 2007/2008; Snyder, 2013).

In lieu of comprehensive immigration reform, this study sought to identify policy recommendations that would assist the DACA youth to develop skills, continue with their education, and ultimately enter into the workforce in legal employment opportunities. Two theories framed this study and a third was used as a lens in which to view the issues. These theories are human capital theory, national human resource development (NHRD), and Kingdon’s multiple streams theory. The intersection of these three theories brings together (a) the traditional economic foundation of how organizations make determinations regarding who and when to invest in the skill development of individuals, or whether the investments should be made by the individuals themselves (human capital theory), (b) what interventions can be utilized to develop skills and how policy should be used to promote those interventions (national human resource development), and (c) how these elements are brought together to formulate policy (Kingdon, 2003).

Using an iterative survey methodology called a Policy Delphi this study obtained a compendium of viewpoints from the diverse perspectives of the stakeholders represented and identified 94 specific policy recommendations. There are five barriers to skill development (transportation, education, access to information, families and first-generation issues, and hopes, dreams and fears) and four barriers to accessing legal employment opportunities (knowledge of jobs available, employability skills, a lack of having credentials and experience, and the behavior and practices of employers). There are three facilitators to skill development (attaining higher education credentials, the importance of advising, and motivation) and five facilitators to employment (work authorization, bilingual proficiency, educational credentials, internships, and mentoring). These barriers and facilitators led to the identification of 94 policy recommendations which were ranked by desirability, importance, and feasibility/likelihood. Greater than 80% of the policy recommendations were desirable or very desirable and all 94 recommendations were important or very important. However, out of the 94 recommendations there is only a moderate belief that any of the policy suggestions are feasible or likely to be addressed despite their desirability or importance. Beyond the rhetoric surrounding immigration and who is and is not desirable to be a part of the U.S. workforce, there is a more nuanced and subdued element that emerged through this study that is more salient than any others, and that is the issue of addressing social inequalities on a broad scale.

The purpose of this study was to understand Mexican immigrant mother's perceptions concerning parental involvement with their children's schools. It provides a perspective on cultural considerations relevant to the implementation of Epstein's model of parental involvement. Eight mothers, two documented and six undocumented, who had emigrated from Mexico and were living in rural Wyoming, were interviewed. The information provided by the participants included descriptions of practices the mothers considered meaningful when involved with their children's education. They shared their own experiences of their school attendance in Mexico and their own parents' involvement with their education. They also shared their understanding concerning parental involvement after having lived in the U.S. and after witnessing their children attend schools in this country. Although the participants in this study had their own understanding of parental participation, they are learning new practices in the U.S. Also, with culturally sensitive modifications, the types of parental involvement suggested by Epstein could also be implemented with the participants in this study. Additionally, in regard to participating in the schools, it was also found that not having documents to live in the U.S did not limit the participants from taking part in their children's schools. Based on the results of this research, school personnel have the potential to play an important role in helping increase Mexican parents' involvement with their children's education. Small and inexpensive variations on what schools are already doing could create a more inviting environment for these mothers. Recommendations are made to assist schools in this effort.

Institutions of public higher education must meet the challenges presented by providing education services to the significantly increasing number of undocumented students. However, public policy has not clearly addressed undocumented immigrants' residency status in regard to college and university admissions standards. This issue will affect education leaders in public institutions of higher education who have the authority to define admissions criteria and influence state legislation. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of higher education leaders' attitudes toward the appropriateness of providing education benefits for undocumented immigrants. Data collected from 384 returned surveys representing 18 states were analyzed to examine leaders' attitudes in relation to demographic characteristics. The statistical analyses revealed no significant differences in attitudinal means based on gender, professional level position, age group, years of professional experience, and states that do and do not charge in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants. However, there were significant differences in attitudinal means based on ethnicity, political affiliation, institution type, and between states that grant in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants.

The issue of undocumented immigration has recently taken center-stage in the media and national politics in the United States. A large population of undocumented youth grows up with legal access to public education through high school, following the Supreme Court decision of Plyler vs. Doe, but faces legal and economic barriers to post-secondary education. Following high school, undocumented Hispanic/Latino youth legal protections end, greatly limiting chances for upward mobility through traditional post-secondary education pipelines. In some cases, knowledge of future barriers to post-secondary education leads to a decline in educational motivation. The current political atmosphere makes this study a bit of a moving target as the Obama administration recently passed a reprieve. This reprieve, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Process (DACA) does not confer any legal status or open any future path to citizenship. It does, however, grant eligible applicants a work permit, and the opportunity to travel, work, and attend school with a sense of security. The purpose of this thesis is to better understand the perceptions and understandings of undocumented Hispanic/Latino youth and their pursuits of higher education in. It is primarily concerned with the educational issues and opportunities facing these students. This research explores the impact of Hispanic/Latino students' perceptions of legal status barriers on their educational attainment experiences. The different opportunities and obstacles present in access to post-secondary education for undocumented Hispanic/Latino students residing in the United States are examined. This study focuses on the time period just after high school graduation, a critical stage in these students' lives, when undocumented status is particularly consequential. Knowledge about students' perception of their educational progress sheds light on their educational attainment experiences; it illuminates important factors associated with their individual educational experiences. Interactions with teachers, school authorities, their parents, siblings, peers, and other authority figures could be described in connecting personal interpretations and emotional responses to specific events in their lives that they feel helped or hindered their educational progress. Knowing how undocumented Hispanic/Latino youth identify and understand the factors that facilitate or impede their navigation of post-secondary education, will further inform educators and researchers alike. This study offers the possibility of identifying additional factors for educators, researchers, and our communities that hinder or facilitate the educational navigation and success of undocumented students. This type of research is significant as this marginalized population lives and works within the American society; the successes and struggles of these students impacts the United States as a whole. Moreover, these students possess amazing potential; we need to better understand and serve this population in order to both improve their life experiences, and to benefit from their input and abilities.

. Latin@ immigrants face many obstacles to affordable healthcare that push them to disproportionately rely on the primary safety-net for their healthcare needs. This system is mostly funded with public monies that will be significantly reduced when Affordable Care Act is fully implemented. Since undocumented Latin@ immigrants are prohibited from accessing federally funded healthcare, they will be left out of the health care reform. This thesis examines two community-based clinics in the Greater New Orleans area that serve this population, and have developed linguistically and culturally appropriate programs that address its needs. The New Orleans Faith Health Alliance and Common-Ground Health Clinic are cases used to explore the impact that the Affordable Care Act will have in the already unstable safety-net in New Orleans. Through the analysis of other models around the nation, this thesis presents viable recommendations to both clinics and the City of New Orleans Health Department.

Bakgrund: Immigranter, flyktingar, asylsökande och papperslösa tillhör samhällets mest sårbara grupper och löper hög risk att utveckla mental ohälsa relaterat till traumatiska upplevelser pre- och postmigrativt. Grupperna är underrepresenterade inom den psykiatriska vården och det råder ett missförhållande mellan behovet av och tillgången till vård för dessa patientgrupper. Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka upplevelsen av den mentala ohälsan och hinder för vård hos immigranter, flyktingar, asylsökande och papperslösa ur ett transkulturellt omvårdnadsperspektiv. Metod: Tio kvalitativa studier och två studier med mixad metod har granskats och analyserats. Leiningers transkulturella omvårdnadsteori har använts för att lyfta resultatet till en högre abstraktionsnivå. Resultat: Tre teman identifierades: Den mentala ohälsan, Hinder för vård och Kulturellt betingade attityder. I resultatet framkom att grupperna lider av mental ohälsa relaterat till erfarenheter genom migrationsprocessen. Bristfällig information, kommunikationssvårigheter och bristande tillit till vårdpersonalen ledde till hinder i vården. Dessutom framkom att stigmatisering, religiösa övertygelser och könsroller påverkade fokusgruppens syn på mental ohälsa. Slutsats: Immigranter, flyktingar, asylsökande och papperslösa är högriskpatienter för mentala ohälsotillstånd men strukturella och personliga faktorer hindrar dem att erhålla vård. Som sjuksköterska är det viktigt att inta en aktiv roll och ha kunskap och förståelse kring dessa människors upplevelser och kulturellt betingade attityder kring mental ohälsa. Klinisk betydelse: Genom att belysa en marginaliserad patientgrupps upplevelser av att leva med mental ohälsa och erhålla vård i en ny kulturell kontext ökar sjuksköterskans medvetenhet om dessa människors situation. Detta kan leda till en bättre vård för dessa patienter.
Background: Immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants belong to society's most vulnerable groups and are at high risk of developing mental health problems. The groups are underrepresented in psychiatric care and there is a disproportion between the need and the availability of care for these patient groups. Aim: The aim was to examine the experience of mental illness and barriers for access to healthcare of immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants from a transcultural nursing perspective. Method: Ten qualitative studies and two mixed-method studies were reviewed and analysed. Leiningers transcultural nursing theory was applied to enable a higher level of abstraction. Results: Three themes were identified: The mental illness, Barriers for care and Culturally influenced attitudes. The result showed that the groups suffered from mental illness related to experiences through the migration process. Inadequate information, communication difficulties and a lack of trust in the medical staff led to obstacles in healthcare. Stigma, religious beliefs and gender roles affected the focus group's view of mental illness. Conclusion: Immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants are at high risk for developing mental illness but structural and personal factors preventing them to receive treatment. Nurses should take an active role and gain knowledge about experiences and culturally conditioned attitudes about mental illness among patients. Clinical significance: Highlighting the experience of living with mental illness and obtaining care in a new cultural context, increases the nurses’ knowledge about the marginalized patient group.

This study explores undocumented migrant’s access to social welfare and income support distributed by the non-profit and public sector in Stockholm. The study is conducted through interviews with representatives from the non-profit sector whose organisations and networks come in contact with undocumented migrants. According to Swedish law the social services have a responsibility to assist everyone who temporarily resides within the county. Consequently undocumented migrants have the right to assistance in acute situations. According to the testimonies given from the non-profit sector undocumented migrants have much difficulties acquiring all forms of aid from the social services. The respondents experiences show a multi-layered complex of problems giving reason for bureaucrats representing the public authority narrowing their services to undocumented migrants. The main focal points presented in this study are bureaucrats confusion regarding their own mission in relation to the migration board as well as the services restricted resources. Since undocumented migrants have difficulties claiming their rights in regard to the public sector, many turn to the non-profit sector for support. The result in the study shows that the non- profit sector functions as an informal social service bureau without the economical or legal framework to support it.

Illegal immigration incurs tremendous economic, social, and humanitarian costs for Europe and the Maghreb countries. Previous literature on illegal immigration focuses on “coping” (border security, repatriation, and rescue) and “resolving” (social integration of immigrants). This thesis attempts to direct the European policymakers’ attention to “preventing” policy model. In essence, the prevention model seeks to reduce the incentives of the Maghreb people to migrate. The thesis focuses on analyzing the migration pattern in Morocco, and its implications for Spain and Italy. Based on Morocco’s two-track migration pattern, the thesis argues that rural development could reduce the incentives of internal migration, and urban development could reduce the incentives of migration abroad. Finally, the thesis analyzes official development assistance (ODA) to Morocco from Spain, Italy, and the European Commission. The analysis shows that their development efforts do little to discourage Moroccans’ incentives to migrate. The thesis recommends that the Spanish and Italian governments adjust their development assistance in a way that targets either one of the two migration tracks.

This paperwork concerns a masters research, which analyzes international immigration in Santa Catarina in the 21st century. More precisely the presence of Latin-American immigrants in the capital of the State of Santa Catarina. The main objective of this study is to understand who are these immigrants and how their integration happends in the society. The fieldwork was performed from contacts with Pastoral Service of the Migrant (SPM) and included, particularly, undocumented immigrants that seeks Pastoral for aid of the institution in its effective regularization or simply for greater integration with the society. O presente trabalho faz parte de uma pesquisa de mestrado que analisa a imigração internacional na capital de Santa Catarina no séc. XXI, mais precisamente a presença de imigrantes latino-americanos contemporâneos na capital catarinense. O objetivo deste estudo é compreender quem são esses imigrantes e como acontece a sua inserção na sociedade florianopolitana. O trabalho de campo foi realizado a partir dos contatos com o Serviço Pastoral do Migrante - SPM e contemplou, sobretudo, imigrantes indocumentados que buscaram a PASTORAL, seja para auxílio da Instituição na sua efetiva regularização migratória ou simplesmente com o propósito de maior integração com a sociedade nativa. Para que esse novo fluxo migratório pudesse ser vislumbrado, senão em sua totalidade, mas em suas singularidades, tal fen meno foi contemplado segundo suas características, coetâneas aos imigrantes internacionais contemporâneos. Abstract Immigration courts in the United Sates are struggling to resolve 610,524 removal proceedings cases with approximately 330 judges located in 58 immigration courts nationwide. Due to the limited number of judges, case backlogs have increased steadily, with the wait time being 854 days in 2017 for the first hearing and much longer for case resolution. The purpose of this case study was to explore the perceptions and attitudes of immigration attorneys about delays in removal proceeding hearings in an immigration court in the southwest. Kettl's transformation of governance theory served as the theoretical foundation for this study, which explored immigration attorneys' perceptions about the effects of delays on the welfare of immigrant clients, the effects of delays on client-attorney relationships, and potential solutions to the delay crisis. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with a snowball sample of 10 participants as well as deportation hearing observations and court document reviews. Data were analyzed using the open coding technique. Findings indicated that legal representation was challenging for undocumented immigrants as the lack of proper documents often dissuaded immigrants from seeking legal guidance and they experienced challenges in navigating workplaces, schools, and society. Findings also indicated inadequacies in immigration courts and the need for more funding and resources such as judges, staff training, online application submission system, and judicial system restructuring. The implications for positive social change are directed at immigration policymakers and decision makers as a better understanding of the delay crisis may help them to focus attention and resources in helping to reduce the backlog and improve the judicial process.

The aim of this study was to examine how the social services could investigate and support children of irregular immigrants within the boundaries of the law. More specifically it aimed to examine the legal possibilities and obstacles for the social services to support irregular immigrants, how the officials at the social services act considering the legal aspects, and how they reason morally and ethically when dealing with irregular immigrants. To answer the aim of the study the theory of positive law was used combined with qualitative interviews with two officials at the social services. Moreover a small quantitative telephone study with officials in the social services and with voluntary organizations was made. The study has used theories of sociology of law, law and ethics, and professional (civil) disobedience. The conclusions were that children of irregular immigrants are included by the Swedish law for social services, but are hindered from getting support by the legal obligation to inform the police authorities when the social services are dealing with foreigners who did not apply for a residence permit. There is a need for the officials to be extra committed in such cases and they break the obligation to inform to be able to support the children.
