Public street lighting is part of a complementary road that serves to illuminate streets at night. Public street lighting lamps are generally operated throughout the night until early morning continuously without equipped tools that monitor conditions. The non-functioning of public street lighting is often not known by officers. In this study, a microcontroller-based damage monitoring tools was built with an SMS-based notification service. This tool is suitable to be implemented to monitor the state of public street lighting because it can monitor the state of lights during the day, lights go out and dim at night, and also can check the state of the lights by sending commands via SMS service. By sending the "CEK LPJU" command via SMS, the monitoring tool will give a reply regarding the state of the public street lighting. In addition, the monitoring tool will automatically send SMS regarding disturbances that occur in public street lighting. Keywords: public street lighting, SMS, microcontroller

Improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gases is a central issue of the Europe 2020 strategy. Today enormous electric energy is consumed by the street lighting. Much of it could be saved through suitable energy-conservation measures (ECMs). The energy audit of the street lighting system in the Pravets municipality was carried out in compliance with the legislation in force in the EU and Bulgaria. Data about the present state of street lighting and electricity consumption for a period of 3 years were gathered and analysed. The baseline electricity consumption was defined. Classification of streets was done and the light class of the different categories streets was determined. The potential for energy savings was identified and a package of ECMs was developed. The annual electricity savings are 680 MWh (or 57,441 €/y) and the annual CO2 emissions savings are 557,640 t. The investment for implementation of the envisaged ECMs is 414,840 €. The expected electricity savings compared to the baseline are 75%.

This paper proposes a method for classifying street lighting conditions after dark in order to share the collected data with the local community. Such information is important for the safety and security of residents, and can be used to discuss about anti-crime activities and nighttime route recommendations. However, it is difficult to ascertain the actual street lighting conditions because of insufficient street-lamp data and the effects of obstacles and other light sources. In order to tackle this problem, we propose a social approach by which local residents collaboratively collect street lighting conditions using their smartphones. The technology behind this approach is a classifier that places the street lighting conditions into one of three levels. It is based on three attributes that are calculated from the illuminance data collected by the smartphones. The results of experiments on 164 actual streets show a maximum classification accuracy of 88.4%. We also discuss performance differences between smartphones and the effect of walking speed during data collection, both of which are important factors affecting the classification accuracy.

Proper street lighting has psychological, ecological and economic functions. Not only does it provide safety in settlements at night, but it also makes streets friendlier. Inadequate quantity and quality of street luminaries can cause troubles in the ecosystems of settlements. Public lighting management is the responsibility of local governments, and therefore it matters how much the operation and maintenance burden the budget. The modernisation of the obsolete street lighting system and the installation of a reliable and energy-saving (cost-effective in the long run) system is taking place in more and more places. Large cities (domestic cities with county rights) deserve special attention due to the concentration of the population, functions and through them the concentration of environmental impacts.

This paper presents a comparative study of differences in energy consumption while applying 2004 and 2014 releases of the CEN/TR 13201 standard for lighting designs. Street lighting optimal design and its optimization is discussed. To provide a reliable comparison, optimal designs for a given representative set of streets were calculated. The optimization was performed by newly developed software. As a test bed, a set of streets was selected with varying physical and traffic characteristics. The energy consumption was measured on the same set of streets both statically, which assumed the same lighting levels throughout night, and with a dynamic control, which adjusted lighting based on traffic intensity. For experiments with the dynamic control, one year of traffic intensity data were used. The findings confirm increased economical impact of dynamic control for the 2014 standard, which results in significant energy saving.

This article describes an innovative method for measuring lighting levels and other lighting parameters through the use of aerial imagery of towns and cities. Combined with electricity consumption data from smart electricity meters, it was possible to measure the energy efficiency of public lighting installations. The results of this study also confirmed that lighting measurements, installation material, luminaire position, and electricity consumption data can be easily integrated into geographic information systems (GIS). The main advantage of this new methodology is that it provides information about lighting installations in large areas in less time than more conventional procedures. It is thus a more effective way of obtaining the data required to calculate the energy efficiency of lighting levels and electricity consumption. There is even the possibility of generating street lighting maps that provide local administrations with up-to-date information regarding the status of public lighting installations in their city. In this way, modifications or improvements can be made to achieve greater energy savings and, if necessary, to correct the distribution or configuration of public lighting systems to make them more efficient and sustainable. This research studied levels of street lighting and calculated the energy efficiency in various streets of Deifontes (Granada), through the use of aerial imagery.

This paper reports the results of a recently concluded R&D project, SCALS (Smart Cities Adaptive Lighting System), which aimed at the development of all hardware/software components of an adaptive urban smart lighting architecture allowing municipalities to manage and control public street lighting lamps. The system is capable to autonomously adjust street lamps’ brightness on the basis of the presence of vehicles (busses/trucks, cars, motorcycles and bikes) and/or pedestrians in specific areas or segments of the streets/roads of interest to reduce the energy consumption. The main contribution of this work is to design a low cost smart lighting system and, at same time, to define an IoT infrastructure where each lighting pole is an element of a network that can increase their amplitude. More generally, the proposed smart infrastructure can be viewed as the basis of a wider technological architecture aimed at offering value-added services for sustainable cities. The smart architecture combines various sub-systems (local controllers, motion sensors, video-cameras, weather sensors) and electronic devices, each of them in charge of performing specific operations: remote street segments lamp management, single street lamp brightness control, video processing for vehicles motion detection and classification, wireless and wired data exchanges, power consumptions analysis and traffic evaluation. Two pilot sites have been built up in the project where the smart architecture has been tested and validated in real scenarios. Experimental results show that energy savings of up to 80% are possible compared to a traditional street lamp system.

During the planning and design portion of the project, the City hired a consulting firm to look at our existing system and make recommendations as to light source and fixture configuration. After some on site studies of existing street lighting, it was recommended that all arterial streets of the City of Portland be converted from mercury vapor to high pressure cut-off fixtures, in order to cut down glare in the eyes of drivers. Secondly, it was recommended that, on arterial streets, the City could no longer afford to light “key-hole to key-hole.” It was important to confine the light to the street right-of-way.

The use of formal methods and artificial intelligence has made it possible to automatically design outdoor lighting. Quick design for large cities, in a matter of hours instead of weeks, and analysis of various optimization criteria enables to save energy and tune profit stream from lighting retrofit. Since outdoor lighting is of a large scale, having luminaires on every street in urban areas, and since it needs to be retrofitted every 10 to 15 years, choosing proper parameters and light sources leads to significant energy savings. This paper presents the concept and calculations of Levelized Cost of Electricity for outdoor lighting retrofit. It is understood as cost of energy savings, it is in the range from 23.06 to 54.64 EUR/MWh, based on real-world cases. This makes street and road lighting modernization process the best green “energy source” if compared with the 2018 Fraunhofer Institute cost of electricity renewable energy technologies ranking. This indicates that investment in lighting retrofit is more economically and ecologically viable than investment in new renewable energy sources.

Nowadays, planners and designers manage streets, not only as a channel for movement but also as a place for socialising. However, streets in Amman city are still growing into highways that serve vehicles rather than social interaction. Hence, this situation brings more problems for both the liveliness of Amman’s streets and their users’ experience. This study examines the characteristics of streetscape elements that particularly affect users’ experience to improve social and sustained activities on commercial streets. To achieve this aim, structured and semi-structured observations were used to investigate the stationary and transitory activities and measure their duration time. Also, a questionnaire for street users was distributed, and a simple regression test was used to reveal the most preferable characteristics for streetscape elements to improve users’ experience on commercial streets, so that it attracts more users to participate with social and sustained activities for a longer period. The findings reveal that poor and inadequate streetscapes on commercial streets affect users’ experience; hence, only transitory and necessary stationary activities are available. Therefore, well-designed shopping streets, with comfortable and suitable seating, shelters along the street, lighting devices all over the street, walkable and accessible sidewalks, and green cover, would become much livelier. Finally, the research highlighted the importance of public participation in creating lively cities and suggesting the best practices to be implemented by the local governments.

The objective of this research is to propose an Artificial Intelligent method to optimize the performance of street lightings. The method proposed in this research is by using the Electromagnetism-Like Mechanism (EM) global optimization algorithm. The proposed EM is designed to minimize the power consumption and maximize the life span of the lamps by different switching configurations and by adjusting the intensities of the lights. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the power consumption of the system and drastically increase the projected life span of the lamps used. The main power savings can be found in the early stages of the graph. This shows that the evening sun rays and twilight help illuminate the street, rendering full intensity of street lights a waste. This, in turn, significantly prolonged the lifespan of the lamps used in the street lightings. It can thus be concluded that the proposed algorithm gives significantly positive impact in optimizing the performance of a street lighting system. The search speed and accuracies of the EM can be further improved by modifying or incorporating other search mechanism into the EM in future extension of the research.

Abstract: Public street lighting (PSL) is an element or component that must be present in every road, functioning as street lighting at night for the safety of motorists. Most of public street lighting is lit at night through morning continuously without a system of monitoring and control, which is consuming electricity. Therefore in this study a prototype system was designed to monitor and control public street lighting based on IoT and Android. It use Dimmer as a microcontroller, Dimmer as a voltage regulation, and LDR sensor for taking light intensity. Conventionally, public street lighting only turns on at night and turn off during the day. Research on monitoring and controlling street lighting in addition to being made that can be ON and OFF lights, it also can reduced electric voltage to dim the light intensity. For mobile robots navigating on sidewalks, the ability to safely cross street intersections is essential. Most existing approaches rely on the recognition of the traffic light signal to make an informed crossing decision. Although these approaches have been crucial enablers for urban navigation, the capabilities of robots employing such approaches are still limited to navigating only on streets that contain signalized intersections. In this article, we address this challenge and propose a multimodal convolutional neural network framework to predict the safety of a street intersection for crossing. Our architecture consists of two subnetworks: an interaction-aware trajectory estimation stream ( interaction-aware temporal convolutional neural network (IA-TCNN)), that predicts the future states of all observed traffic participants in the scene; and a traffic light recognition stream AtteNet. Our IA-TCNN utilizes dilated causal convolutions to model the behavior of all the observable dynamic agents in the scene without explicitly assigning priorities to the interactions among them, whereas AtteNet utilizes squeeze-excitation blocks to learn a content-aware mechanism for selecting the relevant features from the data, thereby improving the noise robustness. Learned representations from the traffic light recognition stream are fused with the estimated trajectories from the motion prediction stream to learn the crossing decision. Incorporating the uncertainty information from both modules enables our architecture to learn a likelihood function that is robust to noise and mispredictions from either subnetworks. Simultaneously, by learning to estimate motion trajectories of the surrounding traffic participants and incorporating knowledge of the traffic light signal, our network learns a robust crossing procedure that is invariant to the type of street intersection. Furthermore, we extend our previously introduced Freiburg Street Crossing dataset with sequences captured at multiple intersections of varying types, demonstrating complex interactions among the traffic participants as well as various lighting and weather conditions. We perform comprehensive experimental evaluations on public datasets as well as our Freiburg Street Crossing dataset, which demonstrate that our network achieves state-of-the-art performance for each of the subtasks, as well as for the crossing safety prediction. Moreover, we deploy the proposed architectural framework on a robotic platform and conduct real-world experiments that demonstrate the suitability of the approach for real-time deployment and robustness to various environments.

This paper aims to improve the implementation standards of solar-energy-based street lighting in Indonesia. A model framework was developed to assess existing conditions regarding the level of lux, the distance between poles, pole height, and lamp power. According to the evaluation of the existing circumstances, the street lighting system is not satisfactory according to the national standard, with 64.7% black area. An alternative installation of street lighting designed by DIALux application was proposed to fulfill the technical standard of street lighting. The result shows that this alternative design can be used for renewing existing street lighting with better performance and reliability. Economic analysis of all technically feasible alternatives was conducted afterward by benefit–cost analysis. The analysis shows that solar-energy-based street lighting requires as much as 621,473,620.00 Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), with 1.06 benefit–cost ratios and a 9% reduction of total cost. Therefore, the analysis indicates that solar-energy-based technology can be feasibly implemented in a street lighting system. The results show that the proposed model can be applied to improve the implementation standard of solar-energy-based street lighting.

Road is a vital public facility that connects one region to another region. Hence, the existence of public street lighting is a key to supports people’s activities at night. But not all roads are equipped with public street lighting. For example, the village roads in Sukarame Village, Sajira sub-district, Lebak regency, Banten. This village is fully electrified but the supply for public street lighting is still limited. Therefore, it is neccesary to install public street lighting in the form of solar lamps as an effective alternative for street lighting and public facilities. Solar lamp is chosen because it doesn’t need power supply and the village’s geographical is very potential for utilizing solar lamps. Solar lamps installed in 3 strategic points, which are village road in front of local kindergarten, village road in front of public field, and mosque’s terrace. Besides solar lamp installation, this research also focused in economic analysis of this program. The analysis was done by comparing total cost needed for conventional public street lighting using bulbs that connect to grid with total cost needed for public street lighting using solar lamps. Despite solar lamp’s price is more expensive, for the long-term usage, public street lighting using solar lamps is more economically profitable compared to conventional public street lighting with the cost difference of Rp 636,582.80 per lamppost for 3 years usage period.

Prior reviews suggest that improving street lighting leads to a decrease in offending, but little is known about the effects of switching off street lighting. The present research investigates the effects of switching off street lighting in Maldon, Essex, by comparing police-recorded crime rates before and after, in Maldon and in the adjacent area of Braintree, Essex. After street lighting was switched off, burglary and vehicle crime increased relatively in Maldon, but criminal damage did not change, and violence decreased relatively in Maldon. Since violence is a costly crime, switching off street lighting in Maldon was not followed by an increase in the costs of crime. Possible explanations of these findings are discussed, including the fact that switching off street lighting in Maldon might have deterred people from going out at night.

<p>The high power consumption of conventional street lighting systems, and the consequences on environmental ecosystem due to continuous turning ON of light, have led researchers to seek solutions to this problem. LED light dimming system has been presented in many studies using computerized systems with or without wireless monitoring facility. The demerits of these systems include complexity, high cost and unfixed data transfer speed. This paper proposes to reduce power consumption of street lighting through a decentralized light dimming system that is based on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). This is in addition to replacing conventional high power lamps with lower power LED lamps. The dimming control circuit of this system is fixed on each pole and controlled individually resulting in faster and more reliable response. The proposed system uses the available infrastructure and is suitable for small or main streets regardless of the number of light poles. It is also flexible in its coverage distance due to the freedom of motion detector selection. The advantages of using LED lighting on the environment as compared to conventional lighting are explained. Simulations reveal the effectiveness of the proposed system on energy saving and on the environment.</p>

In olden days street lights were not operated in an automatic way. Automation of street lights has become apparent these days. But we can notice that we do not require high intensity light during night hours, i.e. when there is no traffic, no people in the streets or on roads and even in the early mornings. As per requirement, the light intensity can be reduced using dimmer circuit. Light dependent resistor (LDR) sensors are used to sense the darkness and Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors are to detect the objects. Raspberry Pi (Master node) and Arduino (Slave node) will communicate each other and they help the proposed system to work more effectively. Current sensor and Voltage sensor are used to measure the current and voltage respectively. By reducing the intensity at these times, energy can be saved to some extent and the data is uploaded to the cloud. We can monitor and control the street lights in a smart way as per our requirement. Fault detection, minimization of cost, reducing the loss of electricity and man power are also possible. Hence, this proposed smart street lighting system will be helpful to the society in cost effective way.

The article reveals the question of achieving security for people on the streets at night with the help of artificial lighting. The author analyzed the factors affecting traffic safety and the possibility of creating the necessary visual conditions for this by means of street lighting. In addition, the article raised an important question regarding the characteristics of the roadway. It is noted that the modern pavement is not standardized on the lighting characteristics. Knowing the spectral characteristics of the applied light sources, these data could be applied in the development of new types of canvases that would allow achieving a new level of illumination in terms of both improving the quality and its efficiency and economy. Without this, it is impossible to talk about the maximum efficiency of the use of the luminous flux as a whole. For existing lighting systems, the brightness calculation is performed by measuring the illumination and reflectivity of the road surface. The obtained brightness values are entered into the mesopic photometric system in order to determine the parameters of the complete system, which provides equivalent visual perception of the illuminated objects and is intended to replace the existing installation. To determine the required lamp power when replacing existing luminaires, it is recommended to use a mesopic photometric system, which allows you to perform calculations taking into account the S/P ratios. In this regard, it is necessary to thoroughly review the computer programs used in the creation of the lighting project, as well as to ensure active participation in international cooperation in the formation of modern lighting standards.

Street lighting with LED (Light-Emitting Diode) technology is currently the main option of public lighting in almost every country. Even though LED technology is a less costly selection, there needs to be well planned in an attempt of acquiring high efficiency. The photometric approach was tested in this study in order to redesign the existing approach used in street lighting in Indonesia. The redesigning process was carried out using software namely DIALux on two different schemes; one with homogeneous luminaire and the other one with the non-homogeneous luminaire. The results of this study showed that the most significant factors in redesigning street lighting covered types of the lamp, pole distance, pole height, and proper lighting angles which could affect the illumination value on both the main road and the sidewalks. In addition, it has also been proven that a homogeneous approach using LED lamp lighting promoted uniformity as well as optimum illumination.

The light emitting diode (LED) street lighting systems based on solar photovoltaic technology have been used for some time. In this paper, we present an analysis aiming at assessing the feasibility and economic performance of a solar-powered street lighting system for a 1km road. The present study introduces the architecture of a classical solar-powered LED street lighting system and estimates the total investment cost for a 1 km highway with 2 lanes. The cost comparison of solar-powered LED lighting and sodium lamps using grid was carried out. The calculations show that the energy saving effect of solar-powered LED lighting systems is obvious but the initial investment of solar-powered LED systems is more than sodium lighting systems using grid. The investment cycle is about 2.2 years under the current conditions.

AbstractHere the first photometric study of road-lighting white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) integrated with semiconductor colloidal quantum dots (QDs) is reported enabling higher luminance than conventional light sources, specifically in mesopic vision regimes essential to street lighting. Investigating over 100 million designs uncovers that quality road-lighting QD-WLEDs, with a color quality scale and color rendering index ≥85, enables 13–35% higher mesopic luminance than the sources commonly used in street lighting. Furthermore, these QD-WLEDs were shown to be electrically more efficient than conventional sources with power conversion efficiencies ≥16–29%. Considering this fact, an experimental proof-of-concept QD-WLED was demonstrated, which is the first account of QD based color conversion custom designed for street lighting applications. The obtained white LED achieved the targeted mesopic luminance levels in accordance with the road lighting standards of the USA and the UK. These results indicate that road-lighting QD-WLEDs are strongly promising for energy-saving quality road lighting.
