Strajk studentów w Łodzi, który odbył się w dniach 21.01-18. 02. 1981, była jedną z najważniejszych imprez zwanych „karnawałem Solidarności”. W wyniku akcji protestacyjnej i negocjacji z komisją rządową zarejestrowano Niezależne Zrzeszenie Studentów, które miało zaledwie kilka miesięcy legalnej działalności, gdyż po wprowadzeniu stanu wojennego jako pierwsza organizacja została rozwiązana przez władze. Artykuł przybliża sytuację ekonomiczno-społeczną, która przyczyniła się do powstania ruchu solidarnościowego. Skupia się przede wszystkim na działaniach zarządu NSZZ „Solidarność” w Biłgoraju. Autorka wykorzystała niepublikowane materiały źródłowe, przekazane Archiwum Państwowemu w Zamościu przez biłgorajskiego działacza solidarnościowego Mariana Jagusiewicza, także m.in. protokoły i informacje KW PZPR w Zamościu i KM PZPR w Biłgoraju. Pierwszy strajk w mieście przeprowadzili pracownicy biłgorajskiej filii Przedsiębiorstwa Transportowego Handlu Wewnętrznego (16–18 lipca 1980). Międzyzakładowy Komitet Regionalny NSZZ „Solidarność” Ziemi Biłgorajskiej założono 6 grudnia, pierwszy przewodniczący Janusz Różycki, od czerwca Jagusiewicz. Pierwsze Walne Zebrania Delegatów odbywały się w Zakładach Przemysłu Dziewiarskiego „Mewa”. Działacze zapewniali dostęp do prenumeraty „Tygodnika Solidarność”, otworzyli bibliotekę, organizowali zebrania zakładowe, strajki, spotkania z Miejską Radą Narodową, podejmowali interwencje w sklepach. Podlegali szykanom ze strony władz. Autorka przytacza wnioski i zalecenia przyjęte na II Walnym Zebraniu Delegatów. Działacze nie spodziewali się stanu wojennego. Po jego wprowadzeniu nieudane próby strajku podjęły załogi Zakładów Naprawy Samochodów i „Mewy”, jednak bezskutecznie. W okręgu biłgorajskim aresztowano 23 osoby. Siedziba biłgorajskiej „Solidarności” została zdewastowana przez bojówki wspierające ustrój.

Po wprowadzeniu stanu wojennego na terenie całej Polski wybuchły strajki. Kluczowym ośrodkiem oporu na Pomorzu Zachodnim i jednym z istotnych w skali kraju była kolebka szczecińskiej Solidarności – Stocznia im. Adolfa Warskiego. Na jej terenie po 13 grudnia 1981 roku ukonstytuował się Międzyzakładowy Komitet Strajkowy, któremu przewodzili Mieczysław Ustasiak i Andrzej Milczanowski. Władzom zależało na jak najszybszym stłumieniu protestów. W nocy z 14 na 15 grudnia do zakładu wkroczyły oddziały wojska i milicji; kilkadziesiąt osób zostało aresztowanych. Członkowie kierownictwa strajkowego zostali następnie postawieni przed sądem wojskowym w Bydgoszczy. W pokazowym procesie część z nich w marcu 1982 roku skazano na kary pozbawienia wolności (najwyższy wyrok opiewał na pięć lat) i praw publicznych. Strajk w stoczni, choć pozbawiony przywództwa, był kontynuowany w formie zmianowej do 18 grudnia, kiedy władze, nie mogąc poradzić sobie z rozwojem sytuacji, zawiesiły działalność zakładu oraz przystąpiły do zwolnień i weryfikacji załogi. Strike at the Szczecin Adolf Warski Shipyard after 13 December 1981 After martial law was imposed, strikes broke out all over Poland. The cradle of Solidarity in Szczecin—the Adolf Warski Shipyard, was the key centre of resistance in Western Pomerania and one of significance in all of Poland. After 13 December 1981, the Inter- -Enterprise Strike Committee was established there, spearheaded by Mieczysław Ustasiak and Andrzej Milczanowski. The authorities wanted to suppress the protests as quickly as possible. On the night of 14–15 December, army troops and police (MO) units entered the plant; several dozen people were arrested. The members of the strike leadership were subsequently brought before a military court in Bydgoszcz. In a show trial in March 1982, some of them were sentenced to imprisonment (the highest sentence was five years) and loss of civil rights. Although deprived of leadership, the strike at the Shipyard continued in shifts until 18 December, when the authorities, unable to cope with how the situation unfolded, suspended the plant’s operations and began to lay off and vet the workforce.

Strajk robotników w Stoczni Gdańskiej im. Lenina w sierpniu 1980 roku oprócz znacznego poparcia społecznego spotkał się z uznaniem, wsparciem oraz pomocą ze strony jedynej niezależnej od władz komunistycznych organizacji w PRL, Kościoła katolickiego. Wśród jego przedstawicieli nie zabrakło duchownych „zza klasztornej furty” – zakonników, których na terytorium diecezji gdańskiej nie brakowało. Gdańscy dominikanie, franciszkanie konwentualni, jezuici, pallotyni, reformaci, oblaci i wielu innych w różnym zakresie oraz stopniu zaangażowania włączyli się w działania na rzecz NSZZ „Solidarność”. Działania te dotyczyły związku zawodowego oraz rodzącego się przy Solidarności ruchu społecznego. Związek i ruch otrzymały wsparcie zakonników nie tylko poprzez opiekę duszpasterską, ale również przez organizowane na ich rzecz zbiórki pieniężne, współudział oraz organizację niezależnego życia artystycznego, pisarskiego, wydawniczego czy pomoc represjonowanym członkom Solidarności i ich rodzinom. Abstract Apart from considerable public support, the workers’ strike at the Lenin Gdańsk Shipyard in August 1980 received recognition and help from the only organization independent of the communist authorities in the Polish People’s Republic: the Catholic Church. Among its representatives there were some monastery clergymen – monks, of whom there were quite a few in the Gdańsk diocese. Dominican friars of Gdańsk, Conventual Franciscans, Jesuits, Pallottines, Reformists, Oblates and many others joined the activities of NSZZ (Independent Self-Governing Trade Union) “Solidarity” and were involved in one way or another. Their activities concentrated on the trade union and the social movement that was emerging around “Solidarity”. The union and the movement received the support of the monks not only through pastoral care, but also through fundraising, organization, and participation in independent artistic, writing and publishing life, as well as through the help given to the repressed members of “Solidarity” and their families.

Z powodu wprowadzonych przez rząd podwyżek cen mięsa i wędlin latem 1980 roku w Polsce wybuchły strajki, które doprowadziły do powstania NSZZ „Solidarność”. W przekazie Międzyzakładowego Komitetu Strajkowego do osób strajkujących oraz popierających strajk istotną rolę pełniły komunikaty i oświadczenia wydawane i kolportowane w postaci niewielkich rozmiarów druków ulotnych przybierających różnorakie formy. Wiele z nich znajduje się dziś w Archiwum Historycznym Komisji Krajowej NSZZ „Solidarność”. Odpowiednio uporządkowane tworzą swoiste kalendarium Sierpnia ’80. Ulotki, które rozprowadzane były podczas strajku sierpniowego, informowały o najważniejszych żądaniach strajkujących załóg zakładów pracy i przedsiębiorstw reprezentowanych przez MKS, konieczności kontynuowania strajku czy kontaktach z Komisją Rządową.

Podmiotowość polityczna pierwszej Solidarności znacząco ewoluowała w okresie między strajkami lata 1980 roku ogłoszonym 13 grudnia 1981 roku stanem wojennym. Na poziomie artykulacyjnym nastąpiło przejście od fazy suplik poprzez zagregowane postulaty do dojrzałego narodowego programu politycznego. Strajki okupacyjne stały się podstawą trwałego potencjału samoorganizacyjnego narodu polskiego. Nie osiągnięto jednak poziomu wielowymiarowości organizacyjnej. Potencjał mobilizacyjny rósł od lipca 1980 roku aż do strajku generalnego, po czym zaczął systematycznie spadać. Podpisanie porozumień oznaczało pisemną akceptację istnienia odrębnego podmiotu społecznego przez dotychczasowego monopolistę (partię rządzącą). Było to świadectwem uzyskania statusowego awansu społecznego. To formalne uznanie nie było bezwarunkowe i zostało ostatecznie zanegowane poprzez wprowadzenie stanu wojennego. Znaczna część środowisk robotniczych, studenckich rolniczych osiągnęła trwałą podmiotowość polityczną na poziomie podstawowym. Political subjectivity of first “Solidarity” The political subjectivity of the first “Solidarity” evolved significantly in the period between the strikes in the summer of 1980 and the martial law announced on December 13, 1981. At the articulation level, there was transition from the supplication stage through aggregated postulates to the mature political program of nation. Occupation strikes became the basis for the Polish nation’s lasting potential of the self-organization. However, the level of organizational multidimensionality was not achieved. The mobilization potential grew from July 1980 until the general warning strike, and then began to systematically decline. The signing of the agreements meant written acceptance of the existence of separate social entity by the former monopolist (ruling party). It was to obtain collective status benefits. This formal recognition was not unconditional and was finally denied by the imposition of martial law. Significant part of the working, student and agricultural circles achieved the level of political subjectivity at the basic level.

This thesis examines the role of schooling in the implementation and achievement of the respective religious and secular policies of the London Missionary Society (L.M.S.) and the Queensland Government in the Reserve Islands of Torres Strait. It sets out to analyse the educational policies of mission and government, the practices and processes by which attempts were made to implement them in the schools, and the outcomes of schooling for the L.M.S., the Queensland government, and Torres Strait Islanders. Particular attention is paid to policies, styles of administration, the curriculum, roles of teachers, indigenous teacher training, and Islanders' responses to schooling. The various historical, socio-cultural, geographical, and community contexts in which schooling was set are woven into the analysis as important considerations. The thesis reviews arguments for considering the Reserve Islands as a colony of Queensland. Further, it attempts to go beyond conventional theorising on colonial education by using holistic, qualitative and interpretive approaches. These approaches allow for interactive analysis of an array of elements in the Reserve Islands which shaped the policies, practices, and outcomes of schooling. It provides for an eclectic historiography, which, it is argued, allows for Islander and European viewpoints to be considered, and relevant contextual features to be included.

A practical fiber optic strain sensor has been developed to measure strains in the range of 0.0 to 2.0 percent strain with a resolution ranging between 10 and 100 microstrain depending on sensor design choices. This intensity based sensor measures strain by monitoring strain induced longitudinal misalignment in a novel fiber interconnection. This interconnection is created by aligning fibers within a segment of hollow core fiber. Related splice loss mechanisms are investigated for their effect on resolution. The effect of gauge length and launch conditions are also investigated.

Role strain, coping, and adaptational outcomes were examined for a sample of 205 eighth grade adolescents. Differences by gender and family type on amount of role strain, use of coping strategies, and levels of emotional stress and well-being in family and peer roles were identified. Results indicate gender differences in degree of strain experienced in the family role and in use of Social Support and Ventilation as coping strategies. Female adolescents report significantly greater strain than males in family roles. Females, in comparison to males, use Social Support to a significantly greater degree and Ventilation significantly less often as a coping response. Differences by family type were found for the use of Family Support as a coping strategy. Adolescents in single-parent families utilize Family Support as a coping strategy significantly less often than adolescents in two-parent families. Results are discussed and directions for future research are recommended.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of specimen dimensions in slow strain-rate environmental effects testing. Tension tests of free machining brass were conducted in a mercuric nitrate solution at a constant crosshead displacement rate of 10⁻³(inch/sec). Thirty-six smooth round bar specimens with different dimensions were tested. It was shown that percent elongation to failure was inversely proportional to an effective ratio of length to diameter, ((D - 2a)L / D²), where D is the specimen diameter, L is the length of the reduced cross section of the specimen, and a is the environmentally induced crack depth. This effective length to diameter ratio correlates with the applied tearing modulus for a cracked round bar tension specimen as defined by P. C. Paris and co-workers in 1979. The results verify that the tearing modulus may be used as a parameter to evaluate tearing instability in terms of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. More directly, these results show a possible source of error in evaluating the degree of susceptibility to environmentally induced cracking in a material-environment interaction.

Chapter 1 gives background information on proteases and discusses the concept of protease inhibition as a therapeutic strategy for humans. It introduces the key concept that conformation defines biological activity. It also outlines how proteases almost universally bind their substrate/inhibitors in an extended β-strand conformation. The use of calpain as a prototype protease for the testing of β-strand mimics synthesised later in the thesis is also discussed. Chapter 2 describes how molecular modeling was used to rationalise the structure based activity relationships (SAR) of known calpain inhibitors. Molecular modeling was then used to successfully design a number of acyclic β-strand mimics. The synthesis and testing of eight such inhibitors is described. The most potent β-strand mimic prepared was 2.13. This was determined to have an IC₅₀ of 30 nM against calpain II. Chapter 3 outlines the history and application of ring closing metathesis (RCM) to the synthesis of cyclic compounds. The attempted synthesis of an eight membered cyclic nitrogen to nitrogen conformationally constrained dipeptide is described. The synthesis of a conformationally constrained β-amino acid calpain inhibitor (3.73) is also described. A novel calpain inhibitor motif was designed in Chapter 4. On the basis of this an in-silico combinatorial library of two hundred and eighty eight possible β-strand templates was prepared. Conformational analysis of this library was performed and from this a number of excellent β-strand templates were identified and selected for synthesis. The preparation of ten β-strand templates is described. New microwave irradiation methodology was developed to achieve this. vii The formation of a six-membered catalyst deactivating chelate is also proposed to explain why some dienes fail to undergo RCM. Two methods to circumvent the formation of such a chelate are outlined. The addition of Lewis acid chloro-dicyclohexyl borane to the RCM reaction mixture and chain length alteration are investigated. Chapter 5 describes the design of macrocyclic β-strand mimics using induced fit molecular modelling. The physicochemical properties of these were calculated in-silico. From this analysis a number of Tyr-XX-Gly based and Tyr-XX-Cys based macrocyclic calpain inhibitors were selected for synthesis. The preparation and testing of these are described. In the Tyr-XX-Gly macrocyclic system a number of variables were investigated and numerous SAR implications concluded. Aldehyde 5.14 was identified as the best electrophilic warhead macrocyclic calpain inhibitor with an IC₅₀ against calpain II of 27 nM. The best non-electrophilic warhead macrocycle (5.13) had an IC₅₀ against calpain II of 704 nM. Chapter 6 describes synthetic optimisation for the preparation of calpain inhibitors 2.13, 5.14 and 5.17. Multi-gram quantities of each were prepared. Aldehydes 2.13 and 5.14 were evaluated as anti-cataract agents using in-vivo cataract sheep model. Both of these β-strand mimics were demonstrated to retard cataract development. Macrocycle 5.14 was found to be the most effective, decreasing the rate of cataract development between forty four and forty nine per cent relative to control. Annotation:
The topic of this thesis is the disputes between the teacher strikes 1966 and 1971 and how the labour movement perceived the teachers and the srikes throught the perspective of class. Various text sources from different agents within the labour movement has been examined. Interprations of two marxist theories and Bourdieus theory of habitus has been used to define various ”class perspectives”. The thesis argues that the labour movement percieved the teachers as a different class from the labourer and that the strikes were percieved as a threat to the labour movements interests.

Abstract The reliability of surface mount leadless solder joints, e.g., LCCC (leadless ceramic chip carrier), LCR (leadless chip resistor), and LCC (leadless chip capacitor), has been a long-term research topic due to the concern of thermal fatigue failure resulting from significant stresses and strains induced in the joint. Abstract Interstitial fluid can significantly affect the bio-environment and electromechanical properties of connective tissues (Grodzinsky, 1983]. Recently, several theories [Lai et al., 1989; Weinbaum et al., 1994] have been developed to describe the movement of ionic interstitial fluid in cartilage and wet bone. Ligaments and tendons, like other connective tissues, are abundant in interstitial fluid and display strong electrokinetic behavior [Chen and Vanderby, 1995]. The goal of this study is to develop a model for fluid pressure and electrokinetic behavior and to validate the model by measuring the strain generated potential (SGP) and fluid pressure in a rabbit patellar tendon (PT).

ABSTRACT The mechanical-chemical coupling reaction occurs when drilling fluid intrudes into mudstone, which leads to the increase of collapse pressure. In this paper, a dynamic calculation model of collapse pressure with drilling fluid intrusion time is established according to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Then the pattern of drilling fluid intrusion into the core of Block D and the change of rock mechanical characteristics after intrusion are analyzed by experiments. Finally, the dynamic collapse pressure of well X in Block D was predicted by combining the reservoir section parameters. The results show that: (1) drilling fluid intrusion will increase the water content of the perimeter rocks, reduce the uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle, and increase the Poisson's ratio, and the longer the intrusion time, the slower the increase of water content and the smaller the change of rock mechanical parameters per unit time; (2) drilling fluid intrusion will cause the collapse pressure of the perimeter rocks to increase, and the longer the intrusion time, the slower the growth; (3) the collapse of the reservoir section of well X pressure equivalent density increased to 1.20g/cm3 in 21.8 days, which is basically consistent with the drilling reality. INTRODUCTION When the hydrostatic column pressure in the wellbore is not sufficient to balance the collapse pressure around the well, the rock around the well will be sheared and damaged, which is one of the root causes of well wall instability (Westergaard, 1940; Cheatham,1984; Veeken et al, 1989; Yew et al,1990; Rahimi and Nygaard,2015). For well wall instability, the mechanical causes were mainly studied in the beginning (Aadnoy and Chenevert, 1987; Fuh et al, 1988; McLean and Addis,1990). It was not until around the 1990s that Yew et al(1990) first combined mechanical and chemical effects to quantify mud shale stability, which centered on linking the total water content of the shale to its mechanical performance. Later, Mian C et al (1995) conducted a similar study on shales from Daqing oil field in 1995 using the same method and concluded that the characteristic performance of rock mechanical parameters was also related to the water content inside the rock. On this basis, two mainstream directions of well wall instability research have been formed: mechanistic mechanism research (Ewy,1999; Moos et al,2003; Gholami et al;2015) and coupled mechanic-chemical interaction research (Hale et al,1993; Zeynali, 2012; Akhtarmanesh et al,2013). The study of the combined effect of coupled mechanics-chemistry on well wall stability is focused on rocks with high mud content (clay content), such as shale, mudstone and mud shale. Due to the intrusion of drilling fluid, illite, illite and montmorillonite mixed layers contained in the clay will absorb water and swell, resulting in certain changes in rock structure and physicochemical characteristics (Muller, 1969;Tan et al,1996; Ghasemi and Sharifi, 2021;Fanhui et al, 2021). As the drilling fluid intrusion time increases, such rocks mechanically exhibit a gradual decrease in strength and hardness, which eventually leads to an increase in the collapse pressure of the rocks on the well wall, and the borehole collapses when the collapse pressure exceeds the hydrostatic column pressure in the wellbore (Tan et al, 1997; Loret et al, 2002; He et al, 2016; Jia et al, 2019).

Abstract Rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) occurs when the wall stress acting on the dilated aortic wall exceeds the strength of the tissue. Therefore, accurate estimation of the wall stress distribution in AAA may be a clinically useful tool to predict their rupture. A majority of AAA contains a laminated, stationary, intraluminal thrombus (ILT) (Harter et al., 1982). Previous investigations have shown that ILT may significantly alter the wall stress acting on AAA (Inzoli et al., 1993; Mower et al., 1997; Stringfellow et al., 1987; Vorp et al., 1998; Di Martino et al., 1998). However, all of those studies used a simplified linear elastic model for ILT. This is inappropriate and can lead to inaccuracies since both AAA wall and contained ILT undergo large deformation during the cardiac cycle (Vorp et al., 1996). Therefore, to accomplish accurate stress analysis of AAA, appropriate constitutive models for both the wall and ILT are necessary. Our group has previously proposed a finite strain constitutive model for the AAA wall (Raghavan et al., in press). The purpose of this work was to derive a more suitable constitutive model and the associated mechanical properties for the ILT within AAA.

Abstract Collagen structural and microstructural organization are thought to contribute strongly to mechanical behavior in normal and healing tendon and ligament. Recent studies have attempted to correlate various collagen microstructural and structural features to material stiffness of healing ligaments (Frank et al., 1991, 1992; Padgett and Dahners 1992; Shrive et al., 1995). Other studies have suggested that progressive fiber failure may be a mechanism for damage accumulation and eventual failure of tendons and ligaments (Kennedy et al., 1976; Viidik 1978; Butler et al., 1984). It may also be an explanation for the observed permanent deformation of tendon at relatively low levels of strain (2–4%, Rigby et al., 1959; Abrahams 1967). Structural mathematical models for tendons and ligaments have been developed but few have incorporated more than one structural scale (i.e. fibril as well as fiber organization). The aim of this study is to develop a mathematical model for tendons and ligaments that will help to better understand the relationship between collagen structure, microstructure, and mechanical properties.

The growing interest in large-scale solar power production has led to a renewed exploration of thermal storage technologies. In a thermocline storage system, heat transfer fluid (HTF) from the collection field is simultaneously stored at both excited and dead thermal states inside a single tank. A granulated porous medium included in the tank provides thermal mass for storage and reduces the amount of HTF volume required. While the thermocline offers a low-cost storage option, thermal ratcheting of the tank wall (generated by filler material reorientation from continuous thermal cycling) poses a significant design concern. A comprehensive simulation of the 170 MWht thermocline tank used in conjunction with the Solar One pilot plant is performed with a multi-dimensional two-temperature computational fluid dynamics model. In operation from 1982 to 1986, this tank was subject to extensive instrumentation, including multiple strain gages along the tank wall to monitor hoop stress. Temperature profiles along the wall material are extracted from the simulation results to compute hoop stress via finite element models and compared with the original gage data. While the strain gages experienced large uncertainty, the stresses computed from the simulation agree reasonably well with the experimental measurements. The maximum predicted hoop stress agrees to within 6.8% of the maximum stress recorded by the most reliable strain gages.

ABSTRACT A coupled numerical framework using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and finite difference method (FDM) has been developed to evaluate the fracturing phenomenon and fluid flow in a deformable porous medium. The key aspect of the proposed coupled model is the simulation of flow of fluid in deformable porous medium using two distinct layers to characterize the solid and fluid phase. The respective governing equations of both phases are solved simultaneously with mutual transfer of variables from one to the other. SPH being a meshless technique has an advantage over grid-based methods in modeling large deformations and fracture propagation, and is used to simulate the solid phase, whereas FDM has been utilized for studying the variation of pore pressure in the fluid phase. Rate of change of porosity, rate of change of velocity, strain rate and stress rate are calculated in the solid phase by SPH. These rates are used to calculate porosity, velocity, strain, stress and volumetric strain of all the particles at any given time step. Porosity rate and volumetric strain calculated in SPH solver are then transferred to FDM solver to calculate rate of change of pressure to find out pressure at every FDM node. This research has provided a detailed mathematical framework and process describing the reciprocal flow of information between SPH and FDM. The coupling mechanism of the proposed coupled model has been validated with two standard benchmark problem in order to establish its accuracy and versatility by comparing the numerical results with the analytical solutions. INTRODUCTION The poroelasticity theory studies the mechanical behaviour of the solid phase, or solid skeleton, and the fluid phase in the pore space of a saturated porous medium. The coupled process of fluid phase interaction within the deformable porous solid phase is crucial in many industrial processes, including oil and gas extraction, hydrofracking, coal bed methane extraction, CO2 sequestration, ground subsidence due to excessive fluid extraction, and other engineering applications. Based on the effective stress concept and an incompressible solid and fluid for a one-dimensional consolidation investigation, Terzaghi (1943) developed the mechanics of solid and fluid phase interaction in deformable porous media. By Biot (1941, 1955), Hsu and Jeng (1994) and Pastor et al. (2009), this work was expanded to three dimensions and took into account the impact of pore fluid diffusion on the kinematics and deformation of porous media. The mechanics and description of porous media are either based on mixture theory, which was developed on the concept of volume fraction provided by Morland (1972), Bowen (1980, 1982), and Muraleetharan and Wei (1999), or on averaging theory, which was developed by Whitaker (1977), Hassanizadeh and Gray (1979) and Scherer (1990). The mechanics involved are described in detail in the works of de Boer (1996), Lewis and Schrefler (1998), de Boir (2000) and Verruijt (2013).
