The non-profit organisation Livstycket contacted the Stockholm City Museum, at a time when it was facing closure. The museum decided to acquire and document objects produced within Livstycket by using photographs and interviews and thus formed a project group. The museum had not previously done this kind of work in such a way, i.e. to combine acquisition with ethnological interviews. The purpose of this study is to draw attention to and inspire this type of collaborative project. It is also to provide insight into the kind of knowledge that may be obtained through ethnological interviews about tangible objects and to point out some factors that may be crucial in other similar projects. The goal is to contribute to the discussion on contemporary documentation at the Stockholm City Museum. The research questions are: What stories and what knowledge about the objects from Livstycket were made visible through the ethnological interviews? What factors can enable or hinder such kind of collaboration projects? The results show that the interviews provided information directly linked to the acquired objects or category of objects, information that would be difficult to visualise in other ways. The interviews also revealed information about the context of the objects and their production. Characteristics of activities at Livstycket are the integration and empowerment of the women involved. The result also shows that discussing what type of collection a museum strives for is one of the crucial factors for a successful acquisition project.

This study examines a project carried out by Stockholms stadsmuseum in the area of Östberga in Stockholm called Stadsmuseet på plats – Östberga. Interviews with museum personnel and analysis of documents related to the project make up the material for this study. The theory used is The Contextual Model of Learning, which in this study is adjusted to apply a museum-centered perspective rather than a visitor-centered one. The aim is to examine the intentions behind this type of outreach work and how it relates to the concept of the socially responsible museum. This concept is an expression of the development of the museum towards a visitor-centered, democratic and inclusive institution. It also includes a political idea, primarily in a British context, of the museum as a vehicle for positive social change. This study shows that Stadsmuseet på plats – Östberga is connected to larger political goals within the municipality regarding a sustainable social development. The museum’s intentions behind the project combines a regard for the local development of Östberga, with the fulfillment of internal institutional goals relating to audience development, development of museum collections, and creating an inclusive cultural heritage that represents every part of Stockholm. This is a two year master's thesis in the field of museum and cultural heritage studies. The purpose of the thesis is to examine different opinions among museum employees about the role of museums. The thesis also aims to find out to what extent and in what way these opinions are influenced by the museum's own policy documents, the national cultural policy and the academic field of museum studies. I have conducted qualitative research interviews with six employees from three different cultural history museums. The theoretical framework of the thesis is based on Laruajane Smith's term authorized heritage discourse. According to Smith, there exists an au- thorized heritage discourse which dictates what heritage is, how it should be handled, and by whom. With this in mind I have identified the museums policy documents, the national cultural policy and the field of museum studies as authorized heritage discourses in their own rights which might influence the opinions of museum employees. To contextualize and further analyze these opinions, I have used a selection of museological research. The thesis concludes that there exists a broad spectrum of opinions about the role of museums. Most opinions are in one way or another influenced by the authorized heritage discourses that I have identified. The interpretation of these discourses, however, seem to differ between museums and between the interviewed employees. The most common standpoint is that museums exist to serve the public. How this is to be accomplished is interpreted in different ways. Some hold that the museums should provide a sense of community, others think that they should be places of learning and others that the museums should be able to make visitors reflect upon contemporary global issues.

The purpose of this paper has been to shed light on the ways the history represented at the City Museum of Stockholm can be used in education at the Gymnasia level. I have made use of the following set of questions to attain this purpose: 1) How is the City Museum's activity vis-á-vis the gymnasia organized and what is the purpose of this activity? 2) What positive results do the interviewees see in the collaboration between the schools and the Museum? 3) Why did the teachers represented in this paper choose to make use of the Museum in their education? The bulk of the study is based upon three interviews with the First Curator at the City Museum of Stockholm and two teachers, from Viola Gymnasiet and Skogsgårds Gymnasiet respectively. My method is qualitative and interpretative with hermeneutic features.

In my interpretation of the source material I have made use of historian Klas-Göran Karlsson's classifications regarding the needs for various forms of history, use of history, users and functions of results. In this way I have been able to establish how the Museum and the teachers represented in the study make use of the history that is represented at the Museum. The Museum and the teachers both use history according to their needs to reconstruct and discover, the latter represented by the research undertaken by the Museum. Hence, it is a scientific usage. The parties also have a need illustrate, make public, and debate; and in this way to make pedagogic use of history. The Museum also makes commercial use of history, which means it is in their interest to increase the value of history.

This study looks at two Swedish image databases of vastly different scale and how they have decided to apply metadata in relation to gender. The databases in question are Kringla, which is a massive database containing more than 2 million photographs from all over Sweden. The second database is Stockholms digitala stadsmusuem’s (Stockholm’s digital museum) database and it is much smaller and contains mostly images from, and around, the city of Stockholm. As a theoretical base I have used Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of men as a social norm (man-lighetsnorm) and applied it on the type of metadata that was applied to images containing men and women. The study also contains a quantitative element where I documented the amount of hits certain gendered, and non-gendered, search terms generated and then discussed them through a Terry Cook and Joan Schwartz inspired lens of power dynamics and archives.
