Abstract. The Xinjiang region of China is a vast and sparsely populated area with complex topography, surrounded by basins and mountains, and its geomorphological features and water circulation process make the traditional spring water resource acquisition time-consuming, labor-consuming and inaccurate. Remote Sensing Technology has the advantages of large scale, periodicity, timeliness and comprehensiveness in target detection. In order to realize the artificial intelligence detection of springs in Xinjiang, this paper presents a method of detecting springs in remote sensing image based on the YOLOV3 network framework, based on the data set of 512 * 512 by using 0.8m remote sensing image annotation, a model of recognition of spring point based on Yolov3 network is constructed and trained. The results show that the map of spring point is 0.973, which is the basis of monitoring and protecting the natural environment in the Belt and Road Initiatives.

Abstract The exploration of the origin of hot spring is the basis of its development and utilization. There are many low-medium temperature hot springs in Nanjing and its surrounding karst landform areas, such as the Tangshan, Tangquan, Lunshan, and Xiangquan hot springs. This article discusses the origin characters of the Lunshan hot spring with geological condition analysis, hydrogeochemical data, and isotope data. The results show that the hot water is SO4–Ca type in Lunshan area, and the cation content of SO4 is high, which are related to the deep hydrogeological conditions of the circulation in the limestone. Carbonate and anhydrite dissolutions occur in the groundwater circulation process, and they also dominate the water–rock interaction processes in the geothermal reservoir of Lunshan. The hot water rising channels are deeply affected by the NW and SN faults. Schematic diagrams of the conceptual model of the geothermal water circulation in Lunshan are plotted. The origin of Tangshan, Tangquan, and Xiangquan hot springs are similar to the Lunshan hot spring. In general, the geothermal water in karst landforms around Nanjing mainly runs through the carbonate rock area and is exposed near the core of the anticlinal structure of karst strata, forming SO4–Ca/SO4–Ca–Mg type hot spring with the water temperature less than 60°C. The characters of the hot springs around Nanjing are similar, which are helpful for the further research, development, and management of the geothermal water resources in this region.

Abstract In this study, a compression spring fatigue problem arising from the galvanization process was investigated. Fatigue, crack initiation and growth of galvanized and non-galvanized springs manufactured from fully pearlitic high strength steel wires were investigated. According to the results, the galvanized compression springs exhibited a low fatigue life due to hydrogen embrittlement. Hydrogen embrittlement induced crack initiations formed under the galvanizing layer and adversely affect fatigue life. It was observed that local embrittlement on the outer surface of the spring wire causes crack initiations and disperses through the pearlitic interlamellar microstructure. Compared to non-galvanized and shot-peened specimens with the same surface roughness, compression springs, galvanized compression springs exhibited a 25 % reaction force loss at 50 000 cycles.

Vehicle springs and stabilizer bar are critical suspension components impacting vehicle riding and handling experience. Diagnostics and prognostics of springs and stabilizer bar can improve customer perceived quality, reduce repair cost and increase up-time for fleet vehicles. It’s even more important for autonomous vehicles, since there is no human driver to sense fault symptoms. Currently, there is no production solution to automatically diagnose and prognose spring and stabilizer bar failures, and most research work is suffered by various noise factors. In this work, a novel solution based on static ramp test is proposed to isolate and localize spring and stabilizer bar faults. With limited number of longitudinal and lateral acceleration measurements, the solution can quickly and effectively isolate faulty spring, disconnected stabilizer bar, loose bushing and loose end link. The validation results from a MY17 Bolt EV demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed solution.

Two consecutive dry years, 2018 and 2019, a warm winter in 2019/20, and a very dry spring in 2020 led to the development of severe drought in Poland. In this paper, changes in the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) for the interval from 1971 to the end of May 2020 are examined. The values of SPEI (based on 12, 24 and 30 month windows, i.e., SPEI 12, SPEI 24 and SPEI 30) were calculated with the help of the Penman–Monteith equation. Changes in soil moisture contents were also examined from January 2000 to May 2020, based on data from the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center, presenting increasing water shortages in a central belt of Poland. The study showed that the 2020 spring drought was among the most severe events in the analyzed period and presented decreasing trends of SPEI at most stations located in central Poland. This study also determined changes in soil moisture contents from January 2000 to May 2020 that indicate a decreasing tendency. Cumulative water shortages from year to year led to the development of severe drought in the spring of 2020, as reflected in very low SPEI values and low soil moisture.

Natural therapy modalities such as thermal therapy and balneotherapy are commonly being practiced for the management of chronic aches and pain all over the world. Nepal has many such natural hot water springs among which few are famous for therapeutic purposes. Thousands of people with some musculoskeletal problem visit those places in the hope of getting rid of their problems. This study aimed to understand their belief in such therapies, expectations, and satisfaction after treatment along with their knowledge of the safety of hot spring water bath. Among 126 participants interviewed, 31% had inflammatory arthritis, followed by degenerative disorders in 29.4% and soft-tissue rheumatism in 12.7%. Around three-quarters believed that hot spring water has natural healing power and thus can improve their pain. Many even believed that water in natural springs is devoid of any chemicals. So, it is a safe treatment option. Regarding the expectation of cure, they had mixed opinions. Naïve participants hoped they might find a permanent cure in thermal baths. However, repeated visitors said that the effect usually lasted for a few months and they have to visit there regularly. Almost two-thirds of people thought that such natural treatment does not have any side effects. Few stated that they had faced certain problems after the treatment. The water tested from the study site showed that it contained a higher amount of chlorine and sulfate in comparison to other hot water springs in Nepal. The minerals present in water might be a cause of temporary relief of pain. Also, outbreaks of infection from common spring baths have to be considered as such cases have been reported in the past. In conclusion, the medicinal benefits of such natural hot water springs have to be studied further and awareness regarding safety should be given to the people seeking treatment.

In the overhauling of the internal combustion engine, a lot of tools are used and among them is the poppet valve spring compressor. In Ghana, auto mechanics at the “way-side” garages make use of improvised tools, such as pipes, pliers, and push rods, for compressing valve springs. However, there are some challenges associated with the usage of these tools which include misplacement of cotters, injuries, and sometimes valve bends. In this work, a review of some of the existing designs of the improvised tools was considered. Also, a survey was conducted to seek the opinion of users (auto technicians and/or mechanics) of the tools. A design was made for spring compression by incorporating a magnet with a pull force of 679.78 N to take care of the removal of cotters during valve assembly dismantling. In this research, an efficient and user-friendly poppet valve spring compression tool with a total mass of 0.88 kg was designed. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed on the upper and lower parts of the tool to examine its response due to the loads that act on it during operation. It was discovered from the analysis that the upper frame of the valve spring compressor experienced the highest von Mises stress of 59.77 MPa at the neck region, whilst the corresponding fatigue analysis showed a maximum fatigue life of 8.355 × 109 cycles.

The coil spring is an important element in the suspension system of railway vehicles, and its structural vibration caused by the mass distribution can deteriorate the dynamic performance of the vehicle. However, the coil spring is usually modelled as a simple linear force element without considering the dynamic characteristics in multibody dynamic simulations of railway vehicles. To integrate the dynamic characteristics of the coil spring into the simulation, three equivalent dynamic models of the coil spring are established by treating the coil spring as multimass spring series, Timoshenko beam, and flexible spring, respectively. The frequency-sweep method is applied to obtain the dynamic response of the proposed models of coil spring, and the accuracy of the models’ results has been compared and verified by the laboratory test. Results show that all of these three equivalent models can reflect the influence of the spring mass distribution on its dynamic responses. Compared with the mass-spring series and beam element equivalent models, the flexible spring model can better reflect the dynamic stiffness and stress of the coil spring changing with the exciting frequency. Thus, the flexible spring model proposed in this paper is more applicable to railway vehicle system dynamics and the fatigue analysis.

We use the volumetric method to measure the spring discharge 14 times. We compare the base flow and demand over a year to analyze the potential for fresh water. The results show that the Stage discharge rating curve y = 0.0002e5,453x with R² value of 0.87. Duwet Springs is a perennial spring that has a small discharge (class VI). The largest discharge ever recorded was 0.69 L/s (March 7, 2020) and the smallest recorded was 0.12 L/s (August 21, 2020). BFI value varied between 0.05 and 1 with mean 0.801. The total base flow is 2490675.734 L (rainy season) and 1563419.873 L (dry season). These springs are sufficient for 75% of the rainy season and 84% in the dry season. Recoil spring is a key part in automatic or semi-automatic weapons re-entry mechanism. Because the stranded wire helical spring (SWHS) has longer fatigue life than an ordinary single-wire cylindrically helical spring, it is often used as a recoil spring in various weapons. Due to the lack of in-depth research on the dynamic characteristics of the current multi-wire recoil spring in recoil and re-entry processes, the fatigue life analysis of the current multi-wire recoil spring usually only considers uniform loading and does not consider dynamic impact loads, which cannot meet modern design requirements. Therefore, this paper proposes a research method for fatigue life prediction analysis of multi-wire recoil spring. Firstly, based on the secondary development of UG, a three-wire recoil spring parameterized model for a gun is established. Secondly, ABAQUS is used to carry out a finite element analysis of its dynamic response characteristics under impact, and experimental verification is performed. Then, based on the stress-time history curve of the dangerous position obtained by finite element analysis, the rain flow counting method is used to obtain the fatigue stress spectrum of recoil spring. Finally, according to the Miner fatigue cumulative damage theory, the fatigue life prediction of the recoil spring based on the S-N curve of the material is compared with experimental results. The research results show that the recoil spring has obvious transient characteristics during the impact of the bolt carrier. The impact velocity is far greater than the propagation speed of the stress wave in the recoil spring, which easily causes the spring coils to squeeze each other. The maximum stress occurs at the fixed end of the spring. And the mean fatigue curve (50% survival rate) is used to predict the life of the recoil spring. The calculation result is 8.6% different from the experiment value, which proves that the method has certain reliability.

Next, an optimized algorithm (Optdes-Sqp) based on the Newton method for solving quadratic programming subproblems was applied to optimize the stiffnesses of compression and extension springs and the positions of the upper support points of each spring. The accuracy of the simulated model was also verified using MATLAB software. Finally, the effect of optimization was verified, and the respiratory rates and heart rates of subjects before and after wearing the exoskeleton were analyzed. AbstractThe paper discusses the phenomenon of a well-known Czech folkloric character, the Spring Man, in its broader historical, social and pop-cultural context. This fictional hero appears in contemporary legends and anecdotes popular mostly during the Second World War; the narratives about the Spring Man represent a regional version (ecotype) of an international migratory legend about the originally English jumping urban phantom Spring-heeled Jack. Similarly to his English predecessor, the Czech Spring Man became a hero of popular culture, which, after 2002, rebranded this originally ambivalent urban apparition into the “first Czech superhero” of cartoons, comic books and movies.

This paper presents a modeling study of the dynamics of a helical spring element with variable pitch and radius considering both the static stiffness and dynamic response by using the geometrically exact beam theory. The geometrically exact beam theory based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam hypothesis is described, of which the shear deformations are ignored. Unlike the traditional spliced curved beam element method, the helical spring element is described with curvature vector and axial strain by establishing and spline-interpolating a function of the radius, the height, the polar angle, and the torsion angle of the whole spring. In addition, a model smoothing method is developed and applied in the numerical analysis to filter the high-frequency oscillation component of the flexible multibody systems, so as to correct the system dynamic equations and improve the calculation efficiency when solving the static equilibrium of the spring. This study also carries out five numerical trials to validate the above dynamic procedure of the helical spring element. The example of the spring static stiffness design shows that the proposed helical spring procedure enables one to deal with practical engineering applications.

To avoid too large exciting force in traditional linear vibrating screen and unstable working state in resonance screen, the disc spring system is applied in the linear vibration screen. The model of the disc spring system in vibration screen is established by simulation and experiment. The characteristics of modal and amplitude of the disc spring system in vibration screen are studied. We found that the disc spring system vibrates in vertical direction at the third-order natural frequency, which is consistent with the direction of the vibration screen when screening particles. Moreover, the third-order natural frequencies in simulation and experiment are basically consistent. Furthermore, the maximum amplitude of the disc spring system appears at 960 r/min (16 Hz), which is in accord with the third-order natural frequency. Meanwhile, the amplitude increases proportionally with the increase of exciting force, while the amplification factors are the same under three different exciting forces. This indicates that the disc spring system has excellent linearity. The results of research provide guidance for design and application of elastic components on the vibration screen.

Rubber spring plays an important role in improving train performance, so the study of rubber spring is one of the focuses of train dynamics. The vertical characteristic parameters of rubber spring are affected by prepressure significantly, as a result of varying parameters of static stiffness, dynamic stiffness, periodic energy consumption, damping coefficient, and so on. In order to use the theoretical method to calculate the precise static stiffness and predict the dynamic characteristics and to reduce the workload of the rubber spring performance test, this paper takes the annular rubber pad as an example to study with different prepressures. In this paper, the convexity coefficient correction formula (simply called the CCCF) for static stiffness calculation and the dynamic fiducial conversion coefficient (simply called the DFCC) method based on different prepressures are proposed. Through further analysis, the accuracy of CCCF and DFCC is proved both theoretically and experimentally. The results have shown precise prediction of the variation of prepressure on rubber spring parameters by using CCCF and DFCC and can be used as the reference of accurate vertical dynamic-static characteristics of the rubber spring.

The automation of the tool change is low, and the accurate value of the tool position cannot be determined. The automatic tool change system for spring machine was designed by using the standard functional parts of the automatic tool change system of the machining center. It mainly includes the design of the automatic loose clamp device and that of the multispindle automatic tool change arm. After static analysis, the deformation of the automatic tool change arm is 0.153 mm, which satisfies the requirements for usage. Kinematic analysis of the designed automatic tool change arm was carried out. After actual verification, the designed automatic tool change system of spring machine realizes the functions of the tools automatic replacement and positioning of the spring machine, which improves the automation of the spring forming equipment.

Two separate samples of graduating business students completed online surveys in the Spring 2019 (pre-pandemic, n = 724) and Spring 2020 (early pandemic, n = 376). This research study explored changes in student grading assessment learning perceptions (GALP) between Spring of 2019 to Spring of 2020, as well as perceptions of video vault use, number of internships/co-ops completed, satisfaction with major, and satisfaction with business degree. With the abrupt change from face-to-face to all online classes in the middle of the Spring 2020 semester due to the pandemic, individual engagement GALP (e.g., attendance, participation) declined but video vault use increased. Reassuringly, other GALP scales as well as both satisfaction measures remained stable. Testing for changes in correlations from 2019 to 2020, using the four GALP scales, video vault use, and internships/co-ops completed as the independent variables and satisfaction with major and satisfaction with business degree as the dependent variables, there were several significant correlational changes. The correlation of video vault use to satisfaction with major increased from 2019 to 2020. Increased Individual Creative GALP – satisfaction with business degree, and Individual Engagement GALP – satisfaction with business degree correlations were also found. The positive Spring 2020 video vault use findings, and maintained GALP scale perceptions were at least partially due to the immediate online Zoom faculty training facilitated by the Business School Online and Digital Learning Department. However, there was a negative correlation from 2019 to 2020 in the internship/co-op completed – satisfaction with business degree. . Study limitations and future research issues with the continuing pandemic are discussed.

Although the dynamics of center of mass can be accounted for by a spring-mass model during hopping, less is known about how each leg joint (ie, hip, knee, and ankle) contributes to center of mass dynamics. This work investigated the function of individual leg joints when hopping unilaterally and vertically at 4 frequencies (ie, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4, and 2.8 Hz). The hypotheses are (1) all leg joints maintain the function as torsional springs and increase their stiffness when hopping faster and (2) leg joints are controlled to maintain the mechanical load in the joints or vertical peak accelerations at different body locations when hopping at different frequencies. Results showed that all leg joints behaved as torsional springs during low-frequency hopping (ie, 1.6 Hz). As hopping frequency increased, leg joints changed their functions differently; that is, the hip and knee shifted to strut, and the ankle remained as spring. When hopping fast, the body’s total mechanical energy decreased, and the ankle increased the amount of energy storage and return from 50% to 62%. Leg joints did not maintain a constant load at the joints or vertical peak accelerations at different body locations when hopping at different frequencies.

Abstract Introduction In spring 2020, elementary schools closed to minimize the spread of COVID-19. Questionnaire data suggest children’s sleep was impacted during the pandemic, yet device-based data (i.e. accelerometry) on this topic is lacking. The purpose of this study was to examine children’s sleep during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e. spring and summer 2020) compared to previous data collected from the same children during each of the two previous years (spring and summer 2018 and 2019). Methods 68 children (age = 9.9±1.2 years, 56% Black, 53% male) previously recruited for an observational cohort study wore a Fitbit Charge 2 on their wrist during the spring and summer from 2018-2020 (i.e. six 30-day measurement periods). We used multilevel mixed models to examine how children’s sleep patterns changed during the pandemic accounting for previous trajectory (i.e. 2018 to 2019). Models included age, sex, and race as covariates. Results Children had an average of 84 nights of sleep data across all six 30-day measurement periods. In the spring of the pandemic, children slept 24.6 minutes more (95%CI = 11.6, 37.5) compared to previous springs. During the pandemic summer, they slept 40.0 minutes more (95%CI = 24.6, 58.5) compared to previous summers. Sleep midpoint was 117.1 minutes later (95%CI = 103.6, 130.6) in the spring during the pandemic and 46.0 minutes later (95% CI = 26.9, 65.2) in the summer during the pandemic compared to previous years. Sleep efficiency improved slightly by 1.3% (95% CI = 0.7, 1.9) and 3.6% (95% CI = 2.7, 4.5) in spring and summer, respectively, during the pandemic compared to previous years. Conclusion During the COVID-19 pandemic, children slept longer after accounting for previous developmental trends. Notably, the shift in sleep timing during the pandemic was nearly two hours later in the spring compared to previous years, potentially due to the lack of structure usually provided by school. Later sleep timing is independently associated with poor health behaviors (e.g., nutrition, physical activity, screen time). Future studies should examine if these changes in sleep persist over time and have potential long-term effects on children’s health. Abstract. Ozone data derived from the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) sensor on board the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite show exceptionally low total ozone columns in the polar region of the Northern Hemisphere (Arctic) in spring 2020. Minimum total ozone column values around or below 220 Dobson units (DU) were seen over the Arctic for 5 weeks in March and early April 2020. Usually the persistence of such low total ozone column values in spring is only observed in the polar Southern Hemisphere (Antarctic) and not over the Arctic. These record low total ozone columns were caused by a particularly strong polar vortex in the stratosphere with a persistent cold stratosphere at higher latitudes, a prerequisite for ozone depletion through heterogeneous chemistry. Based on the ERA5, which is the fifth generation of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) atmospheric reanalysis, the Northern Hemisphere winter 2019/2020 (from December to March) showed minimum polar cap temperatures consistently below 195 K around 20 km altitude, which enabled enhanced formation of polar stratospheric clouds. The special situation in spring 2020 is compared and discussed in context with two other Northern Hemisphere spring seasons, namely those in 1997 and 2011, which also displayed relatively low total ozone column values. However, during these years, total ozone columns below 220 DU over several consecutive days were not observed in spring. The similarities and differences of the atmospheric conditions of these three events and possible explanations for the observed features are presented and discussed. It becomes apparent that the monthly mean of the minimum total ozone column value for March 2020 (221 DU) was clearly below the respective values found in March 1997 (267 DU) and 2011 (252 DU), which highlights the special evolution of the polar stratospheric ozone layer in the Northern Hemisphere in spring 2020. A comparison with a typical ozone hole over the Antarctic (e.g., in 2016) indicates that although the Arctic spring 2020 situation is remarkable, with total ozone column values around or below 220 DU observed over a considerable area (up to 0.9 million km2), the Antarctic ozone hole shows total ozone columns typically below 150 DU over a much larger area (of the order of 20 million km2). Furthermore, total ozone columns below 220 DU are typically observed over the Antarctic for about 4 months.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to use a simple method to enhance the ability of lower limb exoskeletons to restore balance under large interference conditions and to solve the problem that biped robot stability criterion cannot be fully applied to the underactuated lower limb exoskeletons. Design/methodology/approach The method used in this paper is to construct an underactuated lower extremity exoskeleton ankle joint with a torsion spring. Based on the constructed exoskeleton, the linear inverted torsion spring pendulum model is proposed, and the traditional capture point (CP) concept is optimized. Findings The underactuated exoskeleton ankle joint with torsion springs, combined with the improved CP concept, can effectively reduce the forward stepping distance under the same interference condition, which is equivalent to enhancing the balance ability of the lower extremity exoskeleton. Originality/value The contribution of this paper is to enhance the balance ability of the exoskeleton of the lower limbs under large interference conditions. The torsion spring is used as the exoskeleton ankle joint, and the traditional CP concept is optimized according to the constructed exoskeleton.

Background: Children experience seasonal variations in growth whereby height increases most in spring and least in autumn, and weight increases least in spring and most in autumn. We hypothesized that activity restriction caused by efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) would result in increased body mass index (BMI) in children, differing from conventional seasonal growth variations. Methods: We included 169 children who visited endocrine clinics of three hospitals in Korea at regular intervals under the same conditions for two years. Visit dates were D1 (January, 2019), D2 (July, 2019), D3 (January, 2020) before the COVID-19 outbreak, and D4 (July, 2020) during the pandemic. Differences in the z-score for height (HT), weight (WT), and BMI among time points and between spring seasons (i.e., S1–S3) were compared. Results: There were significant differences in BMIz among time points, which decreased from D1–D2 and increased from D2–D3 and D3–D4. WTz significantly increased from D2–D3 and D3–D4. BMIz values of S1 (spring 2019) and S3 (spring 2020) were −0.05 and 0.16, respectively, showing significant differences. WTz values between S1 and S3 were significantly different (−0.02 vs. 0.13). Conclusions: In 2019, there were conventional seasonal variations in BMIz, which declined in spring and increased in autumn, while in 2020, BMIz increased even in spring. The COVID-19 pandemic may have affected seasonal variations in the growth of children attending endocrine clinics.

In the design of modern diesel locomotives equipped with three-axial bogies both in our country and abroad there is widely used a spring hanger made as cylindrical spiral springs of compression with the use of hydraulic shock absorbers. At that the boxes of wheel pairs are connected with frames with the aid of carriers. A considerable drawback of such bogies is that these designs do not allow obtaining the angular turn of wheel pairs during their motion along curvilinear areas of a railway. That is why in practice an increased wear of wheel flanges of wheel pairs takes place. In Bunin SU of Yelets at the level of the invention (RU2604924) there is developed a promising design of a spring hanger excluding such a drawback and a series of computations for substantiation of its efficient design parameters. The investigation results are recommended by research and industrial companies in the field of heavy engineering both in our country, and abroad with the purpose of the further study of the design developed and its possible introduction in practice.

The capacity control system of reciprocating compressor has great significance for the contribution of energy conservation and emission reduction. The parameters of the actuator and hydraulic system within a reciprocating compressor stepless capacity control system play a decisive role in its control accuracy, mechanical reliability, and mechanical security. The actuators and hydraulic system parameters of the same stage are in conflict with each other. Therefore, the actuator and the multistage reciprocating compressor are studied here, specifically through multiobjective optimization using the Nondominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA)-II. The multiobjective optimization design was performed on a two-dimensional (2D) reciprocating compressor test bench. When the spring stiffness of the first stage spring was 27358 N m−1, the spring stiffness of the second stage spring was 23315 N m−1, the inlet oil pressure was 296.62 N, the impact velocity of ejection was 0.4215 m s−1, and the total indicated power deviation was 12.05 kW; the objective functions were optimized. Compared with traditional parameters, the inlet oil pressure, spring stiffness, and impact velocity were all reduced. This parameter optimization design lays the foundations for global optimization designs for stepless capacity control systems.
