Annotation:
Limited research exists examining the effect of moderately loaded conditioning activities that are employed as part of a strength-power potentiating complex (SPPC). Additionally, no studies to date have explored the effects of using a concentric-only quarter back squat protocol as part of an SPPC. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a moderately loaded (50–65% of 1RM) concentric-only quarter back squat protocol on the occurrence of potentiation effects at various time points. Twenty men who could quarter back squat a minimum of 2.4 times their body mass (3.7 ± 0.7 kg·per body mass) participated in this investigation. All subjects participated in 3 conditions: control (CT), a 50% of 1RM trial (50POT), and a 65% of 1RM trial (65POT). One minute before each condition, a maximal countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) was performed. One minute later, the subject performed 1 of 3 conditions: CT condition, 50POT, or 65POT, followed by vertical jumps at 0.5, 3, 5, 10, and 15 minutes after conditioning activity. A force plate was used to quantify displacement, peak power output, peak force, and the rate of force development for each CMJ. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in any of the performance measures quantified during the CMJ trials when comparing the CT, 50POT, and 65POT treatment conditions. However, 48% of the subjects demonstrated some degree of potentiation at the 30 seconds after completing the 65POT trial, but this percent increase was not statistically significant. From a practical perspective, if the goal of the SPPC is to create a maximization of the potentiation effect, moderately loaded activities may not be the best alternative.

Annotation:
The purposes of this study were to examine the effect of ballistic concentric-only half-squats (COHS) on subsequent squat-jump (SJ) performances at various rest intervals and to examine the relationships between changes in SJ performance and bilateral symmetry at peak performance. Thirteen resistance-trained men performed an SJ immediately and every minute up to 10 min on dual force plates after 2 ballistic COHS repetitions at 90% of their 1-repetition-maximum COHS. SJ peak force, peak power, net impulse, and rate of force development (RFD) were compared using a series of 1-way repeated-measures ANOVAs. The percent change in performance at which peak performance occurred for each variable was correlated with the symmetry index scores at the corresponding time point using Pearson correlation coefficients. Statistical differences in peak power (P = .031) existed between rest intervals; however, no statistically significant pairwise comparisons were present (P > .05). No statistical differences in peak force (P = .201), net impulse (P = .064), and RFD (P = .477) were present between rest intervals. The relationships between changes in SJ performance and bilateral symmetry after the rest interval that produced the greatest performance for peak force (r = .300, P = .319), peak power (r = –.041, P = .894), net impulse (r = –.028, P = .927), and RFD (r = –.434, P = .138) were not statistically significant. Ballistic COHS may enhance SJ performance; however, the changes in performance were not related to bilateral symmetry.

Research was carried out on four main subject areas: playing quality of natural turf; establishment; nitrogen nutrition and stabilisation ofsand rootzones. Apparatus and test methods for determining playing quality are described and procedures for the development of standards for playing quality measures are given. A theoretical analysis of the factors governing playing quality was undertaken which showed that natural turf must be considered in terms of the plant and soil constituents and the manner in which these interact, especially in response to wear. The soil factor grouping is shown to be the most important influence on playing quality, primarily through its effect on moisture retention and throughput. A large-scale field experiment was carried out in order to investigate the effect of five different constructional techniques on playing quality and other aspects of turf performance. Constructional types included: pipe-drainage, slitdrainage, slit-drainage with a 25mm sand layer, a sand carpet and a sand profile construction. The results showed that the sand-based constructions provided the best playing quality but that potential numbers of days lost due to the presence of standing water decreased with increasing constructional sophistication. A review of playing quality of fine turf was carried out and an experiment on ball roll characteristics of five turfgrass specieswas undertaken which showed significant differencesamong species. Two experiments on the establishment of turf using different types of seed and sod were carried out, whose objective was to determine the effects of these experimental treatments on the playing quality, ground cover and water infiltration rate of playing surfaces for both football and golf. Experimental treatments included grades of mature turf, juvenile turf and seed. The most notable finding was the dramatic reduction in water infiltration rate where mature turfwas used for establishment. This was ascribed to a combination of organic and mineral matter imported along with the turf causing blockage of soil macropores and hence reducing water infiltration rate. The effect offertiliser nitrogen on the response of Lolium perenne turf grown on a PruntyMulqueen sand carpet rootzone was studied a field experiment which was subjected to football-type artificial wear treatments during two playing seasons. Measures included ground cover under wear and playing quality. In the case of ground cover and player traction responses to nitrogen showed distinct optima particularly during wear. Ball rebound resilienceand hardness showed no such response. Finally an experiment on the stabilisation ofsand rootzones for sport was carried out the objective of which was to study the effect of artificially strengthening a sand rootzone using randomly oriented tensile inclusions {Netlon mesh elements}. Three different rates of mesh elements, two different sizes and establishment using two types of turf were studied in a field experiment. Mesh element inclusion was found to increase water infiltration rate, traction and hardness. Turf treated by washing to remove adhering soil prior to laying also gave higher infiltration rates and, in addition, affected playing quality.

Today's student has more access to global issues than any previous generation. Nearly one million higher education students study abroad worldwide, the workplace reflects a need to be interculturally competent, and students rarely have opportunities to learn how to thrive in the new global environment. This study explored how higher education, and specifically collegiate recreation, is responding to this reality. The development of Killick's global-self is a guiding theme and was used to investigate how students perceive the development of their global-self after experiencing interventions designed to introduce the concepts of internationalization and globalization into a collegiate recreation intramural program. The study also examines how students experience the interventions. The literature review focuses on institutional perspective, student engagement, learning theory, the role of sport and recreation in social change, and collegiate recreation professional competencies. A bounded 8-week case study, using aspects of community action research, was the research method. Observations, surveys, and semi-structured interviews provide data on students' perceptions of their development of a global-self and their experience in the designed intramural program. Themes identified in the data provide evidence that the interventions helped students develop both their sense of self-in-the-world and their ability to act-in-the-world. The data suggest that students found value in the interventions and believed them to be a worthwhile addition to the intramural program. Finally, the results of the study suggest that similar interventions can be applied to multiple areas in collegiate recreation and potentially expanded to other forms of co-curricular activities.

This project explores the issue of revealing the structural integrity of a building through the design of a recreational sports facility. The designated site for this sports facility is the River's Edge Sports Complex located in Roanoke, Virginia. A unique setting because the Roanoke River nearly cuts through the center of this site dividing the northern half with the existing football stadium, Victory Stadium, the National Guard Reserve Armory, and Maher Baseball Field from the southern portion containing athletic fields, tennis courts, and a playground. In order to consolidate the facilities into one sports complex, I propose a number of interventions including a bridge building, observation tower, coliseum, natatorium, racquetball courts, and exercise rooms. The goal of providing a smooth unifying path over the river, while creating a unique setting, presents an intriguing architectural challenge. The investigation focuses on the appropriate architectural expressions and structural possibilities of the long spanning bridge building since it is the central unifying element of the sports complex.

This study determines whether the institutional size has any relationship to institutional concerns for risk management and if institutional size is related to the effectiveness of sound risk management guidelines within collegiate sport club programs. A risk management self assessment instrument consisting of twenty-five sound risk management guidelines and a ranking of the five most important and most difficult to implement was developed. Using the risk management self-assessment instrument, this nation-wide study asked collegiate sport club administrators to assess the extent to which their programs effectively adhere to sound risk management guidelines and to determine what they deem to be the most important and the most difficult risk management concerns to implement. Between institutional population sizes of 0-3000, 3001-10000, 10001- 20000, and 20001-60500, no significant differences were detected in regards to overall effectiveness of risk management guidelines. Six of twenty-five individual statements had significant differences between institutional sizes. These statements' concerns were in regards to equipment, physical examinations, waivers, travel itineraries, site communication accessibility, and manuals. Analysis of the ranking of most important and most difficult concerns to implement indicated there was no significant differences between the institutional sizes in regards to risk management concerns for sport club programs. The most important concerns were: 1) Waivers, 2) Litigation prevention, 3) Facility inspection, 4) Travel-drivers, and 5) Manuals. The most difficult to implement concerns were: 1) Physical examinations, 2) First aid at competitions, 3) Coaching standards, 4) Equipment inspections, and 5) Travel-drivers. With no significant differences between institutional size groupings in either effectiveness or types of concerns, a standard of care regarding risk management appears to be in place across the country.

Developing a scientific understanding of the breast support implications for the female recreational athlete will make a significant contribution to the breast biomechanics literature, provide valuable information to bra designers and help athletes make informed decisions about their breast support requirements. The work in this thesis determined the effect of a high and low breast support condition on biomechanical and perceptual variables during steady-state running, intermittent exercise and vertical jumping in a population of larger-breasted female recreational athletes. In order to assess breast kinematics an appropriate method of assessing bra fit was needed. Within this programme of research the use of best-fit criteria was first developed and then demonstrated that traditional bra fit methods overestimate band size (76% of participants) and underestimate cup size (84% of participants). During all activity modes a well-fitted high support bra significantly (p < 0.05) reduced breast kinematics and increased breast comfort. For steady-state running, alterations in lower-extremity biomechanics led to more distance being covered per minute (3.08 m; p = 0.006) and therefore a potential for improved performance when participants ran with high breast support. More acute knee flexion during sprinting (p = 0.008) and less sagittal plane thorax range of motion (p < 0.044) in the high breast support condition during the intermittent treadmill protocol could also benefit running performance. Increases in the range of motion of upper-extremity variables during treadmill activity were related to increases in some breast kinematic variables (r = 0.465 to 0.742); therefore certain individuals may require greater breast support than others. With increased breast kinematics there was a trend towards participants landing from vertical jumps with lower ground reaction forces coupled with increased thorax, thigh and knee flexion (r = 0.564 to 0.607). This suggests participants attempted to soften their landing, which may affect subsequent performance. Vertical jumping and sprinting elicited the highest magnitudes of vertical (0.08 m) and mediolateral (0.03 m) breast displacement respectively, questioning whether steady-state running is the most effective activity mode for testing bra efficacy. The reduction of anterioposterior breast kinematics should also be a consideration for bra design as they related most closely to breast comfort and biomechanical variables across all activity modes. Knowledge of the breast support implications for larger-breasted female recreational athletes was progressed in this thesis and bras offering high multi-planar support are promoted as they were found to be beneficial for performance within the activities investigated.

D'Aria, Matthew Joseph. „Nutrition Composition of Snacks Offered to Young Recreational Soccer Players“. Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/77534.

Annotation:
Snacking behavior has changed dramatically over the past few decades, with snacking frequency reaching upwards of three times per day and comprising 27% of daily calorie intake. Research has shown that the largest food groupings from snacks are grain-based desserts, sweetened beverages, and salty snacks. Previous studies have also shown that children are influenced by their peers. Youth sports are a very popular venue for children and opportunity for physical activity, with soccer becoming one of the most popular sports among young children in the US. Youth sports, especially soccer, can be a powerful tool for promoting physical activity and healthy eating for overall health and obesity prevention. The goal of this study was to examine the nutrition composition of snacks and beverages offered to young children within a soccer league. The study utilized a cross-sectional observational study of snack foods and beverages offered to children participating in a voluntary youth soccer league in southwest Virginia. Snacks offered to children in the under-five (U5) and under-six (U6) years of age categories were observed during weekly matches using an observational checklist reflecting commonly consumed snack foods and beverages. The checklist included brand name, size of food item/beverage, and number of children (by gender) for each team observed. Undergraduate and graduate nutrition students were trained as observers to assess snacks that were offered, specifically visual item identification and portion size estimation. Food items were then classified into different food and beverage categories, including: sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and 100% fruit juices; water; dairy (beverage); fruits; savory (salty) snacks; grain-based desserts; candy and dairy (food). Nutrition information was gathered for each food item and beverage and entered into a database: calories, carbohydrates, protein, fat, saturated fat, sodium, sugar, fiber, vitamin C, iron and calcium. Descriptive statistics were then computed for all nutrients by all snacks combined and by snack category across all observations. Snacks were also compared to the Smart Snacks in Schools nutrition standards. Across all teams there were a total of 687 items offered to the children: 253 beverages and 434 foods. They offered a mean of 205 calories per child. The most popular beverages were SSBs. The most popular snacks were grain-based desserts (136, 31.3% of all snack foods), followed by fruit (124, 28.5%) and savory snacks (117, 26.9%). No vegetables were served during the observations. Snacks within the savory snack item category provided the most calories per child at 63, followed by grain-based desserts, 58. When offered and served with beverages, snacks offered with fruit had a more favorable nutrition profile with lower mean kilocalories, lower sodium, and lower sugars than snacks without fruit. They were also more likely to meet the Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards: 65.4% compared to 25.6%. Only 44.4% of all snack foods and beverages taken by youth players met the smart snacks standards. Categorically, 67.6% of all grain-based deserts, 100% of all candy and 100% of all dairy beverages taken by youth players did not meet the smart snacks standards. Further research is warranted to identify motivating factors for providing unhealthy snacks and beverages to youth during sporting events. There are several limitations, including generalizability of this sample, however the study provides novel insight into snacks offered to young children during recreational soccer and can help inform future strategies and interventions to promote healthier snacks.

The purpose of this study was to compare the temporal profile of strong and weak subjects during ballistic and nonballistic potentiation complexes. Eight strong (relative back squat = 2.1 ± 0.1 times body mass) and 8 weak (relative back squat = 1.6 ± 0.2 times body mass) males performed squat jumps immediately and every minute up to 10 minutes following potentiation complexes that included ballistic or nonballistic concentric-only half-squat (COHS) performed at 90% of their 1 repetition maximum COHS. Jump height (JH) and allometrically scaled peak power (PPa) were compared using a series of 2 × 12 repeated measures analyses of variance. No statistically significant strength level main effects for JH (p = 0.442) or PPa (p = 0.078) existed during the ballistic condition. In contrast, statistically significant main effects for time existed for both JH (p = 0.014) and PPa (p < 0.001); however, no statistically significant pairwise comparisons were present (p > 0.05). Statistically significant strength level main effects existed for PPa (p = 0.039) but not for JH (p = 0.137) during the nonballistic condition. Post hoc analysis revealed that the strong subjects produced statistically greater PPa than the weaker subjects (p = 0.039). Statistically significant time main effects existed for time existed for PPa (p = 0.015), but not for JH (p = 0.178). No statistically significant strength level × time interaction effects for JH (p = 0.319) or PPa (p = 0.203) were present for the ballistic or nonballistic conditions. Practical significance indicated by effect sizes and the relationships between maximum potentiation and relative strength suggest that stronger subjects potentiate earlier and to a greater extent than weaker subjects during ballistic and nonballistic potentiation complexes.

Annotation:
Competitive balance is seen as crucial to the viability of professional sports leagues, and it has been a central concern of sports economists, industry practitioners and fans. But the concept is complex and ill-defined. The theoretical approach in this thesis is to first analyse competitive balance in a simple league context. It is shown that even in a closed round-robin league with a single prize (i. e. league championship), there are three dimensions of competitive balance: win dispersion, performancc persistence and prize concentration. Further extensions to this three-dimensional approach are required when the analysis moves to complex real-world league structures which are typically multiprize tournaments, with host-season playoffs and often open merit hierarchies with promotion und relegation. A new concept of competitive intensity is introduced. The three-dimensional approach is applied to the empirical analysis of competitive balance in European (association) football and the North American Major Leagues, It is found that cross-league comparisons of competitive balance are dependent on the dimension analysed. Win dispersion is better in the Big Five European domestic football leagues compared to the Major Leagues, but the reverse is found for championship concentration. The Major Leagues are also found to be more competitive in respect of the concentration of post-season playoff qualification. Differences in competitive balance are found between the European domestic football leagues. The causes of these cross-league differences are investigated with regression analysis. Again the results are highly dependent on the specific dimension of competitive balance. Win dispersion is significantly associated with national geographic and economic characteristics as well as league structure. Time-series analysis is undertaken to study changes over time in competitive balance in the top divisions of the Norwegian and English football leagues. The results are most significant for the English league, and run counter to the predictions of the invariance principle.

This dissertation builds on Wenner's (Wenner, L.A. (1989). Media, Sports and Society: The Research Agenda. In L. A. Wenner (Ed.), Media, Sports and Society (pp. 13-48). Newbury Park, CA: SAGE Publications Inc.) claims about how the culture of sport is changed as it is mediated by examining the mediation of sport through four digital sports games produced by Electronic Arts--Fight Night Round 2, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, MVP Baseball 2005, and John Madden Football 2005. Following the example of digital game scholars, I employ a multi-level method of textual analysis in engaging the representation and gameplay of these respective titles. The dissertation uses three case studies to tease out the ideological implications of these games as they position their users. The fourth case study examines how the digital sports game audience responds to the ideologies and positioning identified in the textual analysis sections. In responding to the broader optimism of new media theorists, I argue for a consideration of the specific context of the digital sports game as a way into measuring the validity of their positions. In looking at the mediation of the body in Fight Night Round 2, golf and its attendant culture in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004, the ubiquitous quantification of MVP Baseball 2005, and audience responses to John Madden Football 2005, I argue that the potential freedom certain strands of new media theory proclaim is constrained by the ideologies resident in the texts examined here and the ways in which these digital sports games position their users. As such, scrutinizing these specific new media contexts reveals we should ultimately be cautious about the degree to which they offer the kinds of progressive freedoms advocated by celebratory new media scholarship.

Participation in recreational sports can play a vital role in enhancing a student's life. Recreational sports are esepecially beneficial for students with disabilities as it aids in the facilitation of integration into mainstream society. The University of the Western Cape offers a range of recreational sports to their students but the question posed is, are these recreational sports accessible to students who are physically, auditory and/or visually disabled? The aim of this research project was therefore to explore the extent to which the University of the Western Cape's recreational sport was accessible to male and female studnets with disabilities.

Recreation programs have become important resources on college campuses. They can provide important benefits to students and to the university. Students benefit from the opportunity to participate in leisure activities, which helps them develop a healthy lifestyle. The university benefits from the assistance in retaining students who might otherwise terminate their enrollment. This study presents information regarding intramural programs at colleges and universities in 1997. The following questions were researched: 1) What activities are currently being offered for intramural competition in universities that are institutional members of the NIRSA and list a student population between 10,001 and 30,000? 2) How many teams compete in these events? 3) What percent of the university community participates in intramural sports? The study surveyed those colleges and universities who were institutional members of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in 1997, and had a listed student population between 10,001-30,000. A total of 150 institutions met the criteria and wereincluded in the study. These 150 institutions were grouped into three population categories (10,001-15,000; 15,001-20,000; 20,001-30,000). They were also grouped into six regional categories, as defined by the NIRSA. A survey return rate of 71% was achieved. Survey respondents were asked to list the activities offered in their intramural programs, and the number of teams entered in those activities. Respondents were also asked to identify the percent of the university community that participates in intramural sports. Over 50% of respondents indicated that 11-40% of their campus community participates in intramural sports. It is difficult to draw comparisons in any given activity. The number of teams entered varied significantly from one institution to another. Recreation professionals can use this study to identify new activities to add to their intramural programs. The information can assist in identifying intramural activities that might be of interest to students on their campus. Activities that draw a large number of teams at other institutions might be successful on many campuses. Activities that do not attract many entries may not be of interest to students, and are therefore less likely to be successful on other campuses.

A number of questionnaires formed the core of the research reported here. Thirteen studies were carried out in order to find out why people run. The main samples used consisted of marathon and half marathon runners. The main reasons found for starting to run were to improve physical fitness, to improve health or feel better and in order to run in a marathon/half marathon. The perceived benefits reported by runners were examined. These were found to be, in descending order of the benefits derived: improved physical health; increased well being; increased self insight; increased self discipline and improved self confidence. The runners' stated reasons for their involvement in running were also assessed. Factor analysis revealed that running shares many of the motives which underlie other leisure activities. The motivational categories identified were, in order of importance: Challenge; Health/Fitness; Well Being; Addiction; Status and Social. These categories are very similar to those proposed by Maslow (1970). The results reported here show that it necessary for running research, and exercise research in general, to be placed within a much wider context than it is at present. Two main costs were noted by runners. Firstly, a small but significant number of runners reported that running had a detrimental effect on their family and social lives. A comparison of the perceptions of runners with those of their non-running partners showed that runners may underestimate these negative effects. Secondly, a large number of runners reported injuries as a result of their running. Class and gender differences were examined. Blue collar workers were more influenced by the extrinsic satisfiers provided by running than were white collar runners but they were not any less motivated by the intrinsic satisfiers. Running appeared to be more important to the female runners sampled and it brought them greater improvements in well being.

Primary purpose of this project was to address lack of resources for the special needs population pertaining to sports and recreation. Well known organizations within the special needs community, Special Olympics and Boys and Girls Club, provide programs for the population with intellectual and developmental disabilities but can only provide so much when it comes to additional resources. For our able bodied athletes, millions of dollars throughout each year are spent in order to make sure that elite athletes in top professional sports organizations are well taken care of. From million dollar stadiums and practice facilities to knowledgeable sports medicine staff and certified conditioning coaches, professional athletes seem to have a wealth of resources. This project proposes the creation of a facility that would provide the same resources as those of the professional athletes to those with special needs.

Background Organized sports offer an opportunity to promote physical activity and healthy eating. However, current data suggest that youth sports settings may not necessarily provide these benefits. In one study, youth were sedentary nearly half of a soccer match and in another foods and beverages offered at different youth sporting events were found to be energy-dense with little nutritional value. Parents, coaches and their respective sports organizations have the capacity to support a positive sports environment by promoting nutritious foods and beverages as well as optimal movement. To date, there is little research available on physical activity and sports trends of younger audiences, as well as perceptions of coaches and parents of young children toward sports snacks and policies to support healthy eating. The goal of these three studies were to better understand the youth soccer setting as an opportunity to address healthy eating and physical activity. Study 1 Objective: Assess snack offerings of parents and coaches of young soccer players, and policies. Methods: Beverage and Snack Questionnaires were distributed among all parents (n=120) and coaches (23) participating in recreational under five (U5) and under six (U6) soccer. The questionnaires assessed: socio-demographic information; types, as well as frequency, of snacks and beverages offered to children; reasons for snack and beverage choices; and attitudes toward snack policies. Results: Of the 44 parents and 23 coaches that participated, nutrition was ranked as the number one factor in choosing snacks and beverages for children participating in soccer. Yet parents and coaches reported offering many low-nutrient dense foods to their children as snacks. Coaches were receptive to limiting snack options and recommending healthy alternatives. Study 2 Objective: Observe snack offerings for young, recreational soccer players at combined practices and games to determine nutrient content and energy density of the foods and beverages provided. Methods: Snack observations for multiple, randomly selected teams were recorded using an observational checklist by trained researchers following all scheduled combined practices/games. Mean values across all snack foods and beverages were computed for the following key nutrients: calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, sugars, and sodium. Results: Offered snacks were high in sugar, contributing nearly 77% of recommended total sugar intake per day, and low in sodium, fiber, and protein. Study 3 Objective: Determine the level of physical activity among young soccer players. Methods: Six random U5 and U6 teams were selected with 36 eligible players to participate in accelerometer collection data. Participants wore magnetic running pouches containing an accelerometer for a combined practice/game totaling 60 minutes. Informed, voluntary consent was obtained from each child and parent. Results: For the entire recorded session, average speed was 2.2 km/hour, average distance was 1.3 miles. Children were considered sedentary 55.0% of the recorded time. Discussion and Conclusions Organized sports settings offer an ideal avenue for promoting health and wellness among youth athletes. The current culture unfortunately promotes unhealthy snacking and sub-optimal physical activity. While the location and sample sizes limit generalizability, our results support research conducted with older children and highlight the importance of nutrition education for parents and coaches, as well as the potential for snack policies and strategies to encourage more vigorous physical activity in youth sports settings.

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the current status of recreational sports participation behavior, recreational sports participation motivation and life satisfaction among public junior high school teachers in Taichung City and to investigate the differences in population statistic variables on recreational sports participation and life satisfaction. Random sampling questionnaires were issued to Taichung public junior high school teachers of 103 school year, from January 10 to January 31, 2015. A total of 420 valid questionnaires were collected, representing a valid recovery rate of 93.3%. Data analysis were based on SPSS for Windows 18.0 statistical software package, through descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-Test, ANOVA, Scheffe, and Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation. The results of the survey are as follows: A.The main group of junior high school teachers in Taichung City were male, aged 31-40, and 60.1% were married and have children. Ball games (e.g. basketball, table tennis, badminton, soccer, volleyball, tennis, bowling, golf, baseball and softball) and outdoor sports (e.g. jogging, playing the frisbee, flying kites, hiking, bicycle riding, playing paintball games, walking) were the most commonly chosen as recreational sport. “2~3” times a week, “31~60” minutes were the majority of the frequency in recreational sports participation,“schools” were the most chosen places and mainly partners were “alone or with friends”. B.The principal motivations for the respondents to participate in recreational sports was “to improve body health”, followed by “to obtain comfort and relaxation of the body”, “to improve self physical fitness”, “to get good mood”, and “to relieve anxiety and pressure.” From the results, we can understand that teachers hope to relieve pressure to make themselves stay in good health through recreational sports. C.The main factor that affected life satisfaction was “It is joyful for me to participate recreational sports”, followed by “I think my family is harmonious and happy”, “I get along with my friends”, “I am satisfied with the present life”, and “I have good living conditions.” Therefore, to arrange appropriate recreational sports after classes (school) can make people happy and furthermore, enhance life quality. D.Recreational sports participation motivation and life satisfaction among junior high school teachers in Taichung City showed a positive correlation. That meant, the higher the recreational sports participation motivation was, the higher the life satisfaction would be.

In recent years, with the change of society, the declination of national physical fitness and the threat of disease of civilization become significant. The effective exercise is not only important in sports instruction, but also the key of the development of regular exercise in practice. Although the basic knowledge of sports instruction can be obtained in the courses of schools or books, the cultivation of an expert relies on long-term experience. Thus, the beginners tend to be lack of the experience and information in order to approach this field. This study combines IT and traditional sports instruction skills and tries to construct an Expert System of sports instruction in the field of recreational sports to solve the problems of traditional instruction (time-consuming and uneven quality of instruction). First of all, upon popular exercises, diverse training goals and physical fitness levels, this paper constructs the knowledge base with 324 flexible training courses and further obtains the figures of BMI, physical fitness and aptitude through user interface. By the establishment of fuzzy inference mechanism, this study intends to effectively enhance the preciseness and accomplish the objective of interactive training courses. This paper will provide the new thinking of recreational sports instruction and the approach not only keeps the experts’ experience and knowledge, but also solves the difficulty of the people’s exercise to finally fulfill the health lives.
