This paper describes the topographical implications of grit blasted surfaces on plasma sprayed alumina. The transition of the grit blasted surface from raw material to correctly blasted is described in terms of surface heights, height distribution, spacings and texture. The influence of embedded grit is shown to be significant. The individual particles of alumina impacting the surface are classified into two types, these being disc splats and splash splats. Their deposition relationships with regard to surface topography and adhesion is explained with reference to the two types of splat.

Background: Prostaglandins are important for the control of bone remodeling; phospholipases A_2 are essential for prostaglandin synthesis and could be an important mediator for bone health. Our objective was to determine the role of sPLA_2 on osteoclastogenesis and osteoclast (OC) apoptosis. Methods: Human osteoclasts were differentiated in vitro from PBMC in the presence of RANKL and M-CSF. The presence of sPLA_2 was confirmed by immunohistochemistry in OCs in culture and on bone slices. The role of sPLA2 II on osteoclastogenesis and on OC apoptosis was studied using sPLA2 inhibitors The implication of sPLA2 II in bone remodeling in vivo was determined by comparing levels of the enzyme in the peripheral blood ofpatients with traumatic fracture compared to age- and sex-matched controls. Results: In vitrodifferentiated osteoclasts and in situ fetal and Pagetic bone osteoclasts express sPLA_2 II. sPLA_2II inhibition during osteoclastogenesis reduces the capacity to generateosteoclasts and increases apoptosis rate of osteoclastic precursors; it also induces apoptosis on mature OCs. Patients with bone fractures have significantly less circulating sPLA_2 II than controls. Conclusion: sPLA_2 II is present in OCs both invitro and in vivo, in normal as well as in pathologic situations. Its inhibition reduces osteoclastogenesis and increases apoptosis rate in vitro. Plasmatic sPLA_2 II levels are lower post-fracture than in controls. These results strongly suggest a role for sPLA2in the control of bone metabolism but the mechanisms implicated in this effects still need to be clarified.

Vacuum Plasma Spraying has been used to produce coatings onto steel substrates. This work deals with the study of splat morphology of the NiTi alloy sprayed by VPS onto different substrates (aluminium, copper, stainless steel, glass and alumina). All the previous characteristics are discussed in terms of wettability and thermal conductivities regarding the rapid cooling involved in the process. Although identical conditions were used during thermal spraying, a wide variety of splat formations were observed; commonly, slushy or splash/disc splats are formed depending on whether the particles have partially or fully melted. The thermal effusivity of the substrate material, which is a measure of its ability to exchange thermal energy with its surroundings, seems to play an important role promoting more or less spreading. The higher the thermal effusivity is, the more rapidly the splats are cooled, thus starting the solidification before they come to rest and, changing their morphology.

Cobalt ferrite sol-gel solution was deposited onto mild steel substrates to form single splats using a solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) process. It was revealed that the thermal oxidation of cobalt and iron salts occurred mainly into six different formations of deposited splats. These formulations were cobalt monoxide (CoO), maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), cobalt oxide (Co3O4), cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH), goethite (α-FeOOH), hematite (α-Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), and cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4). The surface topographies of the splats exhibited burned, unmolten, partially molten, and completely molten splats. The feed rates of SPPS process played the important role on several properties of the splat such as splat morphologies and percentage of the obtained composite splat phases.

A plasma-sprayed coating is built up by the layering of individual splats. The latter are formed by spreading and solidification of molten particles sprayed onto a solid substrate. The coating properties depend on its microstructure and the quality of contact between the splats and the underlying layer and between the piled-up splats. This work deals with a 1D model of heat transfer between plasma-sprayed alumina splat and smooth substrate. The model is based on heat diffusion in the solidifying splat and substrate and includes undercooling phenomenon, heterogeneous nucleation and crystal growth kinetics. It assumes that splat spreading and solidification are two independent processes. The model predicts splat cooling and solidification taking into account, as far as possible, the in-flight particle properties drawn from the literature in order to study their effect on splat thermal history. The effect of the quality of contact between the splats as well as the already-deposited and solidified layer thickness on the grain size distribution and front solidification velocity is investigated.

Treating osteoarthritis (OA) remains a major clinical challenge. Despite recent advances in drug discovery and development, no disease-modifying drug for knee OA has emerged with any notable clinical success, in part, due to the lack of valid and responsive therapeutic targets and poor drug delivery within knee joints. In this work, we show that the amount of secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2) enzyme increases in the articular cartilage in human and mouse OA cartilage tissues. We hypothesize that the inhibition of sPLA2 activity may be an effective treatment strategy for OA. To develop an sPLA2-responsive and nanoparticle (NP)–based interventional platform for OA management, we incorporated an sPLA2 inhibitor (sPLA2i) into the phospholipid membrane of micelles. The engineered sPLA2i-loaded micellar NPs (sPLA2i-NPs) were able to penetrate deep into the cartilage matrix, prolong retention in the joint space, and mitigate OA progression. These findings suggest that sPLA2i-NPs can be promising therapeutic agents for OA treatment.

Although a number of sPLA2 (secretory phospholipase A2) enzymes have been identified in mammals, the localization and functions of individual enzymes in human pathologic tissues still remain obscure. In the present study, we have examined the expression and function of sPLA2s in human lung-derived cells and in human lungs with pneumonia. Group IID, V and X sPLA2s were expressed in cultured human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) and normal human pulmonary fibroblasts with distinct requirement for cytokines (interleukin-1β, tumour necrosis factor α and interferon-γ). Lentivirus- or adenovirus-mediated transfection of various sPLA2s into BEAS-2B or normal human pulmonary fibroblast cells revealed that group V and X sPLA2s increased arachidonate release and prostaglandin production in both cell types, whereas group IIA and IID sPLA2s failed to do so. Immunohistochemistry of human lungs with pneumonia demonstrated that group V and X sPLA2s were widely expressed in the airway epithelium, interstitium and alveolar macrophages, in which group IID sPLA2 was also positive, whereas group IIA sPLA2 was restricted to the pulmonary arterial smooth muscle layers and bronchial chondrocytes, and group IIE and IIF sPLA2s were minimally detected. These results suggest that group V and X sPLA2s affect lung pathogenesis by facilitating arachidonate metabolism or possibly through other functions.

Phospholipase A2 enzymes (PLA2s) catalyze the hydrolysis of glycerophospholipids at their sn-2 position releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids. Mammalian PLA2s are classified into several categories of which important groups include secreted PLA2s (sPLA2s) and cytosolic PLA2s (cPLA2s) that are calcium-dependent for their catalytic activity and calcium-independent cytosolic PLA2s (iPLA2s). Platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolases (PAF-AHs), lysosomal PLA2s, and adipose-specific PLA2 also belong to the class of PLA2s. Generally, cPLA2 enzymes are believed to play a major role in the metabolism of arachidonic acid, the iPLA2 family to membrane homeostasis and energy metabolism, and the sPLA2 family to various biological processes. The focus of this review is on recent research developments in the sPLA2 field. sPLA2s are secreted enzymes with low molecular weight (with the exception of GIII sPLA2), Ca2+-requiring enzymes with a His-Asp catalytic dyad. Ten enzymatically active sPLA2s and one devoid of enzymatic activity have been identified in mammals. Some of these sPLA2s are potent in arachidonic acid release from cellular phospholipids for the biosynthesis of eicosanoids, especially during inflammation. Individual sPLA2 enzymes exhibit unique tissue and cellular localizations and specific enzymatic properties, suggesting their distinct biological roles. Recent studies indicate that sPLA2s are involved in diverse pathophysiological functions and for most part act nonredundantly.

The splat test is usually generated by low feed rate cold spraying of particles onto an as-polished substrate and it can be considered as a monolayer coating deposition. In this study, in order to investigate cold spray deposition mechanisms, Fe splats were sprayed onto the cold-sprayed single component 316L, Fe, and a composite 90Fe coatings. Results showed that although there is only 3.6 vol.% of 316L in the composite 90Fe coating, Fe splats exhibit a much better deposition behavior onto the 90Fe as compared with the single component Fe coating. To explain this observation, Fe splat samples were characterized using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical profilometry, splat adhesion tests, and splat nanoindentation. Finally, a preliminary explanation towards the Fe splat deposition behavior onto the composite coating was drawn.

Diploma thesis deals with image interpolation. The aim of this work is to study theoretically and then describe the nature of the various methods of image interpolation and some of them implemented in the program MATLAB. The introductory part of this work theoretically closer to important terms that are closely related to this topic of digital image processing sufficient to understand the principle. In the following of the thesis will be discussed all of today's commonly used method of image interpolation. Will hear all about the method of image interpolation using nearest neightbor interpolation and image help of polynimals such as (bi)linear, (bi)quadratic and (bi)kubic method. Then work theoretically analyzes the theory of individual species curves and splines. More specifically, coming to their most frequently used variants of B-spline curves and ther generalizations called NURBS, with addressing the problem of interpolating these curves. The final chapter consists of the results achieved in the program MATLAB.

The diploma thesis deals with the topic of free-form deformations. The main goal of this work were elaboration of theoretical knowledge about this issue and the programming of selected methods od free-form deformations. The first part describes the required spline theory, matrix calculus and free-form deformations. The resulting version shows three programs. The first program compares the selected free-form deformation methods to the example of the 4x4 control point grid. The second program serves as a generalization for the general case of grid of control points. The last program is based on direct manipulation of arbitrary surface point and following recomputation of the control points to obtain demanded shape.

The aim of this thesis is to describe the variability of cardiac rhythm and familiarity with the methods of the analysis, ie by monitoring changes in heart rhythm electrogram signal recording and using the methods in the time domain using recurrent diagram. The work describes the quantification of the methods and possibilities of quantifiers in the evaluation of heart rate variability analysis. It also describes the clinical significance of heart rate variability and diagnostic capabilities changes of heart rate variability caused by ischemic heart disease. The practical part describes how to create applications in Matlab to calculate the quantifiers analysis of heart rate variability in the time domain using recurrent diagram. The calculation was made of the positions R wave elektrogram signal isolated rabbit hearts. The calculated values of quantifiers both methods were statistically evaluated and discussed.

Pro optimalizaci letových trajektorií ve velmi malé nadmorské výšce, terenní vlastnosti musí být zahrnuty velice přesne. Proto rychlá a efektivní evaluace terenních dat je velice důležitá vzhledem nato, že čas potrebný pro optimalizaci musí být co nejkratší. Navyše, na optimalizaci letové trajektorie se využívájí metody založené na výpočtu gradientu. Proto musí být aproximační funkce terenních dat spojitá do určitého stupne derivace. Velice nádejná metoda na aproximaci terenních dat je aplikace víceroměrných simplex polynomů. Cílem této práce je implementovat funkci, která vyhodnotí dané terenní data na určitých bodech spolu s gradientem pomocí vícerozměrných splajnů. Program by měl vyčíslit více bodů najednou a měl by pracovat v $n$-dimensionálním prostoru.

In this thesis, we derive, extend and generalise various aspects of impact theory and splash dynamics. Our methods throughout will involve isolating small parameters in our models, which we can utilise using the language of matched asymptotics. In Chapter 1 we briefly motivate the field of impact theory and outline the structure of the thesis. In Chapter 2, we give a detailed review of classical small-deadrise water entry, Wagner theory, in both two and three dimensions, highlighting the key results that we will use in our extensions of the theory. We study oblique water entry in Chapter 3, in which we use a novel transformation to relate an oblique impact with its normal-impact counterpart. This allows us to derive a wide range of solutions to both two- and three-dimensional oblique impacts, as well as discuss the limitations and breakdown of Wagner theory. We return to vertical water-entry in Chapter 4, but introduce the air layer trapped between the impacting body and the liquid it is entering. We extend the classical theory to include this air layer and in the limit in which the density ratio between the air and liquid is sufficiently small, we derive the first-order correction to the Wagner solution due to the presence of the surrounding air. The model is presented in both two dimensions and axisymmetric geometries. In Chapter 5 we move away from Wagner theory and systematically derive a series of splash jet models in order to find possible mechanisms for phenomena seen in droplet impact and droplet spreading experiments. Our canonical model is a thin jet of liquid shot over a substrate with a thin air layer trapped between the jet and the substrate. We consider a variety of parameter regimes and investigate the stability of the jet in each regime. We then use this model as part of a growing-jet problem, in which we attempt to include effects due to the jet tip. In the final chapter we summarise the main results of the thesis and outline directions for future work.

Le poème en prose est considéré comme une notion problématique dans les études sur le langage et malgré plusieurs tentatives pour définir cette écriture, elle représente encore une exception dans l’univers littéraire. Dans Le Spleen de Paris, Baudelaire fait allusion à ses poèmes comme des « accidents », comme un ouvrage « qui n’a ni queue ni tête, puisque tout, au contraire, y est à la fois tête et queue, alternativement et réciproquement ». L’objectif de ce travail est de discuter des aspects concernant le mode de fonctionnement et la singularité des Petits poèmes en prose de Baudelaire, à partir des traductions de ce recueil, surtout en langue portugaise (Brésil), mais aussi en prenant en compte des fragments des versions en anglais et en espagnol. Ces réinventions constituent des projets littéraires autonomes, orientés par des conceptions de langage distincts et en ce sens, chaque réécriture fournit des éléments pour réfléchir sur les différentes stratégies et théories de la traduction
The prose poem is considered as a problematic notion in language studies and despite many attempts to find a definition to this writing, it still remains an irregularity in the universe of literature. In Paris Spleen Baudelaire refers to his poems as an “accident”, as a work “that has neither head nor tail, since everything, on the contrary, is both head and tail, alternatively and reciprocally”. The goal of this research is to discuss some aspects concerning the principles of composition and the peculiarity of the Small Prose Poems, based on the translations of this work in Portuguese (Brazil), and also taking into account fragments of versions in English and in Spanish. These reinventions frame independent literary projects and they are oriented by distinct conceptions of language. In this way, each rewriting presents elements to think on different strategies and theories of Translation

Abstract Yttria stabilized zirconia particles are plasma sprayed on polished stainless steel substrate. Starting powders are fused and crushed powder, and hollow spherical powder. Four types of the splat morphology, which are splash, rugged, gravel mounted, and disk splats, are observed. Splash and disk splats are fully melted particles, but rugged and gravel mounted like splats are partially melted particles Gravel mounted like splat is observed from only hollow spherical powder, and disk splat is observed in the case of high substrate temperature. It is found that the ratio of splat morphology changes with spraying parameters. Porosity of the coating from fused and crushed powder is higher and Young's modulus of that is lower than that from hollow spherical powder. The ratio of rugged and gravel mounted splats affect porosity and Young's modulus. Adhesive strength increases with the increase in the ratio of disk splat. Abstract Individual splats are the building blocks of any thermal spray coating. Near the coating-substrate interface, they affect coating properties like adhesion strength. This article examines the effect of substrate heating on droplet splashing. Nickel powder was plasma-sprayed onto a polished stainless steel substrate at various temperatures and the resulting splats were analyzed. Droplet splashing was observed experimentally for three different cases: low substrate temperature, high substrate temperature, and droplet-splat interaction. Mechanisms for splashing were explained with the help of computer-generated nickel droplet impacts. The article proposes that the jetting of molten metal is not triggered by the formation of a central splat but rather a solidified ring on the periphery of the splat. It was observed that, on substrates below 350 deg C, splashing is triggered by solidification at the edge of the spreading droplet. Interactions with previously deposited splats also cause droplets to splash.

Abstract The influence of alumina substrate temperature and phase structure : columnar gamma phase, columnar alpha phase and granular alpha phase on splat formation and crystal growth has been studied by SEM and Atomic Force Microscopy. X Ray Diffraction at low angle has allowed to obtain informations on phase structure of layered splats according to substrate phase structure and coating thickness. Column sizes of splats are correlated to a ID model of splat cooling showing the influence of substrate thermal properties and splat thickness on crystal growth kinetic. Finally, coatings adhesion-cohesion values function of spraying parameters are in good agreement with splat morphology and microstructural evolution.

Abstract The structure and morphology of plasma sprayed splats are experimentally investigated using different droplet materials and substrate materials. Droplet materials include aluminum, copper, nickel and refractory metals such as molybdenum and tungsten, and substrate materials include aluminum, stainless steel, and molybdenum plates. The results show that the splashing occurs during the splatting of a completely molten droplet. Most splats formed by droplets molten completely are only central part of the ideal disk type ones, which are defined as the annulus-ringed disk-like splat. It is found that the morphology of such annulus-ringed disk-like splat is greatly influenced by the combination of droplet and substrate materials depending on whether substrate melting occurs. With the combinations of droplet and substrate materials which are of similar thermal properties the splashing of central area of splat tends to occur to present a honeycomb structure at the center of splat. When droplet impacting can cause melting of substrate annulus-ringed splat prefers to present a split type. The flattening ratio of an annulus-ringed disk splat is typically less than 2.

Abstract In order to achieve thick coatings on thin substrates (e < 1 mm) which grit blasting is difficult and can even be impossible, a deposit achieved by using two successive techniques might be the solution. For example it could consist in depositing first by plasma enhanced CVD (PECVD) a thin alumina coating (~ 2 tm thick) and then by plasma spraying a thick (300 - 500 µm) alumina coating. To study such a possibility a systematic study of splats morphology on various substrates was performed. The substrates were either plasma sprayed (- 0.8 - 0.9 mm thick) or PECVD deposited (2 pm thick on mirror polished 304L stainless steel). The plasma sprayed substrates were annealed or not in order to get a columnar, a granular or y columnar structures and then polished (Ra -- 0.4 pm) white PECVD coatings exhibiting an Ra - 6 nm and a columnar amorphous structure, were sprayed as deposited. Splat studies show the drastic influence of alumina substrates crystalline structure and entrapped gas release on splat formation. For plasma sprayed coatings disk shaped splats with an excellent adhesion of corresponding coatings (up to 40 MPa) were obtained on hot (673-873 K) y alumina while on a alumina splat shape and morphology were irregular and resulting coatings adhesion very poor (below 3 MPa). For PECVD substrate gas release upon impact of molten particles modified drastically the wettability and their thermal contact with substrate resulting in very porous splats or in splats were most of alumina is in the splat rim.

Abstract This paper presents a novel process that uses RF plasma spraying and premixed elemental powders to produce intermetallic matrix composites in situ without having to add reinforcement fibers or particles. Splats were collected on a stainless steel substrate and were analyzed to determine if nitrides had formed in metal droplets during flight and how it affected splat morphology. The typical splat morphology of impinged Ti droplets is disk-type with an outer peripheral fringe. Aluminum splats, on the other hand, are classified into two categories: a disk-type with an irregular outer periphery and a semi-massive-type. Other composites produced and examined include TiAl, AlN, and Ti2AlN.

Abstract A simplified 1D model has been developed to calculate the temperature-time history of alumina layering splats. The splats were obtained by plasma spraying alumina fused-and-crushed particles onto steel substrates. The model correlates solidification time with splat layer thickness and cooling rate and helps to explain the process of columnar growth, the development of residual stresses, and the effect of quenching and expansion mismatch.

Abstract Molybdenum splats were produced at three plasma conditions on steel substrates preheated to three temperatures. Morphology of splats and corresponding craters formed on substrates were observed; dimensions of splats and craters were measured with an optical non-contact interferometer. It is found that substrate is significantly melted and deformed upon impact of the droplet, which leads to the formation of flower like splats and craters. On average, only about 36 to 53 % of the areas covered by splats were in good metallurgical/mechanical contact with substrate. Normalized crater volume increases with droplet size and the contact is improved for the high particle energy/high substrate temperature condition as compared with low particle energy/medium substrate energy condition. Splat morphology and crater formation is explained based on impinging jet heat transfer model.

Abstract The splashing usually occurs when a droplet impact on a substrate surface during thermal spraying, which results in the formation of splat with irregularly complicated morphology. In present study splats are formed on polished stainless steel substrate surface covered with different organic substances with different boiling points by plasma spraying under different preheating temperature of substrate in order to clarify the factors which control the splashing during droplet flattening in thermal spray process. The droplet materials used are aluminum, nickel, copper, Al2O3 and molybdenum. Three kinds of organic substances used are xylene, glycol and glycerol which are brushed on the surface of substrate before spraying. It is found that when the preheating temperature exceeds 50°C over the boiling point of organic substance brushed on substrate surface the regular disk type splats are formed in the case that no substrate melting occurs by molten droplet. When the flattening of droplet causes the melting of substrate such as the combination of Mo droplet with stainless steel substrate, the preheating of substrate has no influence on splat morphology. The evaporated gas induced splashing and substrate surface melting induced splashing models are proposed to interpret the formation of the annulus-ringed splat.

This report, prepared for The Jim Henson Company, shares findings of a sub-study investigating the types of support parents and caregivers need when navigating and using the second-screen Splash and Bubbles for Parents app. This study originated from a prior field study finding indicating families would benefit from support around the app since it represents a new kind of digital tool. In partnership with local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations, we provided parents and caregivers more detailed support around the features of the app. Based on survey and interview findings, parents and caregivers found the app helpful for supporting their children’s science learning, thus validating the field study findings. We also found that all sections of the app were used and could help promote conversations between parent/caregiver and child. Moreover, families expressed choosing to use a specific app section when they felt it was more relevant or developmentally appropriate for their child.

This report prepared for The Jim Henson Company shares findings of a field study examining the promise of the Splash and Bubbles for Parents app, a second-screen digital resource designed for parents and caregivers to support young children’s learning of ocean science. The study conducted in 2020 involved a two-group, quasi-experimental design in which family participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention condition (who watched the show and used the app) or the comparison condition (who watched the show but did not have access to the app). Findings from this study provided information about how the app supported families to talk about science together; what science concepts and practices children learned through engaging with the app and related science activities; and how families shifted their attitudes, beliefs, or practices around science and media. Another finding highlighted parents and caregivers’ need for support around ways to engage with and use the app given that this represents a new type of digital tool.
