The study of Italian humanism in the age of the Reformation has focused almost exclusively on the relationship between humanism and the Italian Spirituali. This emphasis can be traced back to the many works of Delio Cantimori. Cantimori persistently argued that humanism, with its emphasis on scriptural studies, philology, and spiritual and ecclesiastical renewal promoted evangelical spirituality and church reform among Italians. He saw the Spirituali—many of whom were humanists—as pious, devout individuals caught between their own evangelical convictions and the traditions of a spiritually unsatisfying and morally corrupt ecclesiastical system. It was the dynamics of this spiritual crisis, fueled by the clash between evangelism and the doctrines of the church, that formed the basis of many of Cantimori's works on humanism and reform in Italy.

This article investigates meditations (both Catholic and Protestant) that are considered relevant textual representations of the devotional culture in the Early Modern Age. Studying the reception and use of patristic and mediaeval texts of devotional character in the early modern period, the article states that a close connection may be observed between early modern devotional culture on the one hand, and the patristic and mediaeval tradition on the other. Through analysis of the sources, the researcher can observe that the breach between the mediaeval church and the churches of the Reformation is much less abrupt and definitive than is often assumed. Particularly, the devotio moderna forms an important bridge between the Middle Ages and the later Baroque age.

Recent research and clinical experience suggest that clients are increasingly expecting that psychotherapists will deal with their spiritual concerns that are traditionally addressed in spiritual direction. This expectation has already begun to impact the practice of psychotherapy by increasing interest in the “spiritually-oriented-psychotherapies.” This article proposes that psychotherapy can become more receptive and effective in dealing with spiritual concerns by appropriately incorporating some or many of the functions of spiritual direction. The practice of spiritual direction is first described and compared to pastoral counseling and spiritually-oriented psychotherapy. Then eight functions of spiritual direction are presented and compared to similar “functions” in psychotherapy. Finally, specific recommendations for incorporating these functions into the practice of psychotherapy are discussed.

There are no protocols in the literature describing how spiritual care from nursing staff should be provided to a bone marrow transplant patient and their family. Although a majority of nurses think that routine spiritual care would positively impact patients, only 25% of patients have reported receiving spiritual care. Increased education has been associated with positive perceptions of spiritual care. The solution to this need will be researched through a secondary data analysis from pre/post surveys from implementation of an education program on spiritual care for BMT nurses. The hypothesis of this PI is that a spiritual education program will enhance spiritual perspectives in nurses and increase spiritually-focused nursing care with patients. The purpose of this PI is to determine if a spirituality training class for Bone Marrow Transplant nurses will increase nurses' spiritual perspectives and their spiritual care of patients. A second purpose is to examine the relationship between nurses' spiritual perspectives and extent of spiritual care at both pre- and post- educational program times. This study is a secondary analysis of a data set from a pre/post survey of BMT nurses who attended a spiritual education program. Nurses were surveyed using the SPS tool and a NSQ tool. The spiritual education program was a one day, six hour class that was taught by the research team, and divided into sessions. There were 43 BMT nurses who completed the class and the posttest one month after taking the class. The slight increase of scores from pre- to post- survey with the SPS suggests that the spiritual education program provided a slight enhancement of personal spiritual perspectives and assisted the participants to reflect and further develop their values and beliefs on spirituality. The hypothesis that a spiritual education program would increase the frequency of spiritual care that nurses provided to patients was strongly supported. These findings suggest that participating in a spiritual education program provides the nurse with information that will enable one to conduct spiritual assessments, become more comfortable developing an individualized patient spiritual care plan, and accepting that providing spiritual care is part of a nurse's job description.

The design of this project - a religious retreat - although based on the form of a traditional monastery differs from it in its basic premise. The idea of monastic life is based on solitary contemplation and restricted social exchange, while a retreat places group interaction at its base. lt is a place where a community of persons shares time and thoughts, but also where each individual is given a space of his or her own to which to retreat when needing privacy. The retreat consists of three separate elements: a church, a dormitory complex and a "Unity House" that includes a library, and meeting and dining spaces. A massive travertine wall that divides public (profane) and private (sacred) spaces, is the main geometrical, focal and symbolic element to which the three buildings relate. In the design of this project the questions of what constitutes the necessary qualities of spaces in the structures designated for a religious purpose were explored. The design was approached with the understanding that for a project such as a religious retreat natural and man-made environments must be treated as one. Only then, design resources will allow for creation of harmonious, intimate and poetic spaces and give the retreat participants a chance to quiet themselves and experience the surroundings with all their senses.

This descriptive correlational study aimed to determine the level of awareness towards spiritual well-being and the extent of the practice of spiritual care of nurses who care for non-covid and COVID-19-infected adult patients at a tertiary hospital in Metro Manila. Data were gathered using two standardized questionnaires namely: The Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) created in 1982 by Craig W. Ellison and Raymond F. Paloutzian, and the Nurse Spiritual Care Therapeutics Scale (NSCTS) by Mamier and Tylor in 2015. Weighted Mean and Spearman’s Rho were used for the statistical treatment. Results of the study showed that the nurse respondents have a very high level of awareness towards spiritual well-being as to religious well-being (RWB) and existential well-being (EWB); they have a moderate extent of the practice in terms of spiritual care; there is a moderate significant relationship between the nurses’ level of awareness towards spiritual well-being in terms of religious well-being (RWB), existential well-being (EWB), overall spiritual well-being and their extent of practice of spiritual care. This implied that there is a relationship between the two variables accordingly but not to the highest degree; that is, the very high level of awareness towards spiritual well-being of nurses just moderately affected their extent of practice of spiritual care. Therefore, the researcher recommended more provision of spiritual care from the nurses for their patients.
