Annotation:
Many rare earth element (REE) deposits have experienced multistage geological enrichment processes resulting in REE bearing mineral assemblages of considerable complexity and variability. Automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) mineral liberation analysis of such REE ores is confronted by the difficult assignment of energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectra to REE mineral names. To overcome and bypass this problem, a generic and reliable labelling of EDX reference spectra obtained from REE-bearing minerals based on their contents of Si, Ca, F and P in a bulk normalised analysis is proposed. The labelled spectra are then combined into groups of REE-P (~monazite), REE-Ca-Si-P (~britholite), REE-Ca-F (~synchysite) and REE-F (~bastnaesite, parisite, fluocerite). Mixed spectra with low counts for REE from minute REE mineral grains are combined into a separate group. This classification scheme is applied to automated SEM mineral liberation analysis (MLA) data from beneficiation products by comminution and multistage flotation of REE carbonatite ores. Mineral modes, mineral grain size distribution, mineral liberation, mineral locking and mineral grade versus recovery curves based on the analysis of >200,000 particles in a sample can be recognised and interpreted in virtual grain size fractions. The approach as proposed here will allow future process mineralogical studies of REE deposits to be robust and comparable.

Annotation:
Niq Mhlongo's collection of short stories, Soweto, Under the Apricot Tree (2018), does not perhaps immediately present itself as speculative fiction. The collection, however, gives the supernatural world of African indigenous knowledge as much weight in shaping characters' lives and experiences as it does contemporary socio-political realities. It troubles established genre distinctions in that it can be seen as a work simultaneously belonging to magical realism, social realism, and horror. This article contends that it is precisely owing to the work's use of supernatural and uncanny aspects that this collection can be viewed as a form of social or sociological realism, which aims at depicting the peculiar contemporary and subjective (sur)realities of many young black South Africans. It is faithful to the contradictory worlds of tradition and globalisation that many South Africans straddle, as well as to the spectres of colonialism and Apartheid, that impinge on the present in both material and immaterial forms. In many ways the collection stages the difficulty of decolonisation and the subjective spectres and doppeigängers that such a process unleashes. This paper will make use of the work of Sigmund Freud, Avery F. Gordon, Eve Tuck and C. Ree to explore instances of haunting and the uncanny in Mhlongo's collection.

Ammoniation is one method whereby the nutritional value of cereal straws may be increased, It is important if the use of ammonia is to be optimised under a wide range of conditions that the underlying mechanisms of its effect on straw digestion are understood.Near infra-red reflectance spectroscopy (NIR) is now widely used to predict many nutritional characteristics of forages. However, this predictive approach requires the availability of large calibration sample sets with the parameter to be predicted already determined by traditional means. The technique of mathematically subtracting spectra one from another (difference spectra) to assess changes in straws during digestion and after ammoniation has been reported by Barton et al (1986) and Barnes (1988) respectively. This approach whilst requiring no pre-calibration has so far lacked good definition and has only been used qualitatively. The purpose of the present work was to assess the ability of new mathematical treatments of the NIR spectra before subtraction to increase definition and yield quantitative data on any observed changes.

Annotation:
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are still a popular subject in the field of luminescence because of their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and colour tenability through anion exchange reactions or quantum confinement. We investigated the structure and luminescence properties of the mixed halide perovskites CsPbBr2I NCs with annealing temperatures. The results showed that the average grain size of CsPbBr2I increased with increasing the temperature from 300 to 440K, and the morphology changed above 380K. The normalised PL spectra of CsPbBr2I NCs had an obvious blue-shift, and then displayed a slight red-shift with increasing annealing temperature. In addition, the PL intensities, peak energies, and bandwidths of the NC films as a function of temperature were discussed in detail.

Annotation:
The endemic New Zealand kauri trees (Agathis australis) are of major importance for the forests in the northern part of New Zealand. The mapping of kauri locations is required for the monitoring of the deadly kauri dieback disease (Phytophthora agathidicida (PTA)). In this study, we developed a method to identify kauri trees by optical remote sensing that can be applied in an area-wide campaign. Dead and dying trees were separated in one class and the remaining trees with no to medium stress symptoms were defined in the two classes “kauri” and “other”. The reference dataset covers a representative selection of 3165 precisely located crowns of kauri and 21 other canopy species in the Waitakere Ranges west of Auckland. The analysis is based on an airborne hyperspectral AISA Fenix image (437–2337 nm, 1 m2 pixel resolution). The kauri spectra show characteristically steep reflectance and absorption features in the near-infrared (NIR) region with a distinct long descent at 1215 nm, which can be parameterised with a modified Normalised Water Index (mNDWI-Hyp). With a Jeffries–Matusita separability over 1.9, the kauri spectra can be well separated from 21 other canopy vegetation spectra. The Random Forest classifier performed slightly better than Support Vector Machine. A combination of the mNDWI-Hyp index with four additional spectral indices with three red to NIR bands resulted in an overall pixel-based accuracy (OA) of 91.7% for crowns larger 3 m diameter. While the user’s and producer’s accuracies for the class “kauri” with 94.6% and 94.8% are suitable for management purposes, the separation of “dead/dying trees” from “other” canopy vegetation poses the main challenge. The OA can be improved to 93.8% by combining “kauri” and “dead/dying” trees in one class, separate classifications for low and high forest stands and a binning to 10 nm bandwidths. Additional wavelengths and their respective indices only improved the OA up to 0.6%. The method developed in this study allows an accurate location of kauri trees for an area-wide mapping with a five-band multispectral sensor in a representative selection of forest ecosystems.

8556 Background: The aim of this study was to profile cytochrome CYP1 family (CYP1A1/1A2, and CYP1B1) mono-oxygenase enzymes during the malignant progression of primary melanoma and metastatic disease. Methods: Tissue microarrays of primary (n = 75), and metastatic (n = 104) melanoma were constructed with the patient demographics: (1) primary melanoma; age 22 to 93 (median 59); sex M/F 36/44; Breslow thickness 0.4 to 15 mm (median 2.5 mm); ulceration 25/80, and (2) metastatic melanoma; age 26 to 92 (median 60 mm); sex M/F 54/49; ulceration 30/104; number of nodes 1 to 15 (median 2); extra-capsular spread 20/95. CYP1 protein was detected by IHC using validated selective poly- and monoclonal antibodies. Vector SG (grey) stain for CYP1 was used with nuclear fast red counterstain to aid spectral resolution from background melanin. Staining intensity was scored visually (negative 0, weak 1, moderate 2, strong 3) and using SIM at every pixel of a captured image of each melanoma core. Reference spectra of individual chromophores were used to spectrally ‘un-mix’ CYP1 staining before the mean normalised absorbance intensity was determined. Grading was by the 2002 AJCC classification system: primary stage I n = 27 (1A 8, 1B 19), and stage II n = 48 (2A 22, 2B 16, 2C 10), lymph node metastasis stage III n = 98 (3B 53, 3C 45), visceral metastasis stage IV n = 6. Normal skin (n = 27), benign naevi (n = 14), and dysplastic naevi (n = 21) were also included. Results: CYP1B1 was not in normal skin but was over-expressed in both primary and metastatic melanoma (visual: 71% & 65%, SIM: 91% & 83%). Primary melanoma (stage I & II) was significantly greater (p = 0.004) than metastasis (stage III & IV). CYP1B1 did not correlate with ulceration or Breslow thickness but did correlate with N stage lymph node metastasis (p = 0.005). CYP1B1 expression in dysplastic naevi indicated up-regulation at an early stage of melanoma progression. CYP1A1/1A2 was not expressed in normal skin nor primary/metastatic melanoma. Conclusions: CYP1B1 protein expression is maintained with advancing AJCC stage from primary through to visceral metastasis. Future work will seek to correlate protein expression with functionality with a view to exploiting CYP1B1 in the enzyme/prodrug therapy of malignant melanoma.
