Finding and selecting interesting and relevant information in large online digital text archives can be challenging. We tackle this information access problem from a geographic information science perspective using a case study exploring a semi-structured historical encyclopedia. We propose a three-pronged approach for this, based around (1) automatic retrieval of spatio-temporal and thematic information from digital text documents; (2) transformation of the extracted information to spatialize and visualize spatio-temporal and thematic structures; and (3) integration of the spatialized displays in an interactive web interface driven by a user-centered design and evaluation approach. We implemented an interactive spatialized network display to allow identification of spatio-temporal relationships hidden in the text archive, complemented by an interactive self-organizing map display to visualize thematic relationships in these text documents. We evaluated the utility and usability of the developed interface in a user study with digital humanities scholars. Empirical results show that the developed interface supports target users in the humanities uncovering latent spatio-temporal and thematic relationships and generated new insights through the spatialized text collection. Adopting this approach, we illustrate one avenue to addressing the information access problem in the digital humanities from a GIScience perspective.

Although many studies have indicated that spatialized sounds increase the subjective sense of presence in virtual environments, few studies have examined the effects of sounds objectively. In this study, we examined whether three-dimensional reproduced sounds increase the sense of presence in auditory virtual environments by using physiological and psychological measures. We presented the sounds of people approaching the listener through a three-dimensional reproduction system using 96 loudspeakers. There were two spatial sound conditions, spatialized and non-spatialized, which had different spatial accuracy of the reproduction. The experimental results showed that presence ratings for spatialized sounds were greater than for non-spatialized sounds. Further, the results of the physiological measures showed that the sympathetic nervous system was activated to a greater extent by the spatialized sounds compared with the non-spatialized sounds, and the responses to the three-dimensional reproduced sounds were similar to those that occur during intrusions into personal space in the real world. Additionally, a correlation was found between the psychological and the physiological responses in the spatialized sound condition. These results suggest that the physiological measures correlate to the perceived presence in acoustic environments.

Most current modeling for evolution of communication still underplays or ignores the role of local action in spatialized environments: the fact that it is immediate neighbors with which one tends to communicate, and from whom one learns strategies or conventions of communication. Only now are the lessons of spatialization being learned in a related field: game-theoretic models for cooperation. In work on altruism, on the other hand, the role of spatial organization has long been recognized under the term ‘viscosity’. Here we offer some simple simulations that dramatize the importance of spatialization for studies of both cooperation and communication, in each case contrasting (a) a model dynamics in which strategy change proceeds globally, and (b) a spatialized model dynamics in which interaction and strategy change both operate purely locally. Local action in a spatialized model clearly favors the emergence of cooperation. In the case of communication, spatialized models allow communication to arise and flourish where the global dynamics more typical in the literature make it impossible. Simulations make a dramatic case for spatialized modeling, but analysis proves difficult. In a final section we outline some of the surprises of spatial dynamics but also some of the complexity facing attempts at deeper analysis.

Hans Urs von Balthasar and Robert Jenson both spatialize God by depicting the triune life as “roomy”. Theologians have employed spatial analogies readily since the inception of the “trinitarian revival” of the 20th century. In recent days, however, theologians have begun critiquing divine spatial imagery. In particular, the spatialized grammar of Balthasar’s trinitarian theology has attracted criticism. In this article, I review Balthasar’s divine spatial analogies and show how “bodily” readings of them have provoked criticism. I then repair Balthasar by applying Jenson’s musical rendition of “divine roominess” to Balthasar’s spatial analogies, suggesting that musical conceptions of space resolve some of the concerns theologians raise with Balthasar’s trinitarian theology in particular and spatial analogies in general.

This paper investigates properties of extensions of tail dependence of Archimax copulas to high dimensional analysis in a spatialized framework. Specifically, we propose a characterization of bivariate margins of spatial Archimax processes while spatial multivariate upper and lower tail dependence coefficients are modeled, respectively, for Archimedean copulas and Archimax ones. A property of stability is given using convex transformations of survival copulas in a spatialized Archimedean family.

Maintaining spatial awareness is a primary concern for operators, but relying only on visual displays can cause visual system overload and lead to performance decrements. Our study examined the benefits of providing spatialized auditory cues for maintaining visual awareness as a method of combating visual system overload. We examined visual search performance of seven participants in an immersive, dynamic (moving), three-dimensional, virtual reality environment both with no cues, non-masked, spatialized auditory cues, and masked, spatialized auditory cues. Results indicated a significant reduction in visual search time from the no-cue condition when either auditory cue type was presented, with the masked auditory condition slower. The results of this study can inform attempts to improve visual search performance in operational environments, such as determining appropriate display types for providing spatial information.

The Siberian condition is an exaggerated one with many layers: its history of settlement created unconventional spatial conditions that are emphasized by extreme geography and climate. Observations from a visit describe the urban space as monotonous and depressing, the landscape as an endlessly montaged one, the Siberian habitat as limited and so on. These observations refer to conventional themes from the architectural field as extreme or particular to the Siberian condition. For a deeper reading of this spatial condition, this project deconstructs Siberian space into five elements that, through applying a metaphoric reading of each, explain the exaggerated condition on multiple levels. The five elements are chosen so that together they represent Siberia's geography in a broad spatial sense. Landscape, production of urban space, dwelling, act of demolition and infrastructure are the pure spatial objects and processes that are taken as the constituents that, on multiple scales and by their ideological insert, inform the Siberian condition. With respect to how meaning and space are strongly connected, deconstructing Siberian space into these elements requires the deconstruction of the ideologies that stand behind them. Thus, a conventional theme is paired with a theoretical theme: within this theoretical framework an interpretation of each object or process is allowed that reveals its ideological insert, historic context and actual condition. These interpretations are generated by both text and graphics supporting each other. Collected materials are used from field research such as interviews and photographs as well as academic research. This thesis uses the power of a visual anthropology to go beyond a formal description of a place: a method that collages the Siberian geography. Through commenting on existing trends and making the aggregated systems of operation legible, a dialogue for negotiating the post-Soviet urban condition in Siberia is offered.

This thesis explores new ways to communicate sensor data by combining spatialized sonification with data visualiation in a 3D virtual environment. A system for sonifying a space using spatialized recorded audio streams is designed, implemented, and integrated into an existing 3D graphical interface. Exploration of both real-time and archived data is enabled. In particular, algorithms for obfuscating audio to protect privacy, and for time-compressing audio to allow for exploration on diverse time scales are implemented. Synthesized data sonification in this context is also explored.

This thesis centers on the question of how the representation of buildings opens up possibilities for investigating Can Xue's fiction as literature with universal concern about humanity. It explores the significance of Can Xue's employment of buildings in her works from three aspects. The first aspect regards buildings as the reflection of the structure of the soul. The second aspect situates buildings in their relationship with residents and explores the connection between the buildings/residents relationship and that of body and soul. The last aspect sees buildings as the microcosmic projection of Can Xue's fictional space. This study places textual constitution at the center of investigation through the approach of close textual analysis. It marks an attempt to reconsider the method of literary investigation in the field of modern Chinese literature which has been dominated by cultural and historical approaches.

Two of the leading methodologies for spatializing audio over multiple channels include non-real-time multi-track tape and variations of real-time systems that often involve complex configurations of hardware. Of the latter, composers relying on MIDI as a control source have used pairs of sound modules, effects units and automation capable mixers to achieve spatialization over four loudspeakers. These systems typically employ intensity panning, Doppler shifts and reverberation. The present research details the development of a compact spatialization system using a MAX patch controlling a Kurzweil K2500 sampler. This system supports real-time diffusion of up to six simultaneous sound files over eight loudspeakers while incorporating intensity panning, Doppler shifts, delays and filtering. The MAX patch allows composers to choose from several automatic sound spatialization trajectories or to use the mouse to draw and store their own trajectories for later playback. The piece, Circumfusion, is an eighteen-minute composition of electroacoustic music utilizing this spatialization system.

Fission gases (Xe, Kr) produced during irradiation in a nuclear fuel can contribute to significant effects such as swelling and fission gas release which may affect the overall performance of the fuel. The effective diffusion theory, which is generally used in the modelling of base-irradiation of nuclear fuel, cannot predict the intra-granular fission gas release during post-irradiation annealing tests. From the several scenarios proposed, we discuss and analyze three such mechanisms: the directed movement of pressurized intra-granular gas bubbles in a vacancy concentration gradient towards the grain surface, the Brownian movement of these intra-granular bubbles via volume and surface diffusion mechanisms, a scenario of gas bubble movement along with the dislocations via the mechanism of dislocation climb. A new spatially resolved model, BEEP Model, has been developed for gas bubble migration and its interaction with point defects. Analyses done using the BEEP model show that neither of the directed or random movement, nor their combination, could explain the large fission gas release obtained during post-irradiation annealing in our reference experiment. The dislocation climb mechanism has been demonstrated as a prominent gas release mechanism, however, the values for diffusion of vacancies on the dislocations are not known and were chosen to allow gas release. The work carried out in this thesis has provided a better insight to the transport of intra-granular gas bubbles and its impact on fission gas release. This work also emphasized the questions that need to be answered at the lower scales

This dissertation investigated the effects of spatialized auditory cues on the development of situation awareness for teams. Based on extant research, it was hypothesized that 3-D spatialized auditory cues can be utilized by teams to develop knowledge about team member location in addition to supporting the usage of team behaviors for developing and maintaining situation awareness. Accordingly, the study examined how situation awareness would be differentially influenced by varying the type of auditory cues incorporated into virtual environment (VE) team training scenarios within the context of a MOUT team task. In general, the results of this study provided partial support for the beneficial effects of 3-D audio cues in facilitating the development of situation awareness and reducing workload. Implications are discussed in the context of design guidance for VE training systems.

AbstractInformative and realistic haptic feedback significantly enhances virtual reality (VR) manipulation. In particular, vibrotactile feedback (VF) can deliver diverse haptic sensations while remaining relatively simple. This has made it a go-to solution for haptics within hand-held controllers and tangible props for VR. However, VF in hand-helds has solely focused on monolithic vibration of the entire hand-held device. Thus, it is not clear to what extent such hand-held devices could support the delivery of spatialized information within the hand. In this paper, we consider a tangible cylindrical handle that allows interaction with virtual objects extending beyond it. This handle is fitted with a pair of vibrotactile actuators with the objective of providing in-hand spatialized cues indicating direction and distance of impacts. We evaluated its capability for rendering spatialized impacts with external virtual objects. Results show that it performs very well for conveying an impact’s direction and moderately well for conveying an impact’s distance to the user.
