This article examines the main Spanish visual readings of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein from the first illustrated edition in Spain (1944) to the significant 200th anniversary of its publication. Thus, how Mary Shelley’s novel has morphed throughout time depending on the different illustrators who have approached the text can be assessed while identifying the key illustrated editions for this period. The analysis of the illustrated reception and history of Frankenstein offers a new perspective into how the novel has been both read and “seen” in Spain. The results of this study shed light on diverse aspects of the novel such as the perception of the monster and how oft-neglected characters and episodes have been slowly added to the visual rendition of the novel.

The Commission for the Geological Map of Spain planned a monumental work in the 19th century, the “Synopsis of the fossil species found in Spain”, in which descriptions of the characteristic fossils of geological periods had to be combined with their illustrations in a paleontographic atlas. The objective was to constitute an auxiliary tool for those people who, without reference books at their reach, could determine in a practical way the Spanish geological formations. This work, which was to be published over several years, was entrusted to the mining engineer Lucas Mallada y Pueyo. The fossil drawings were handled by three artists: Teresa Madasú, José Cebrián and Fernando de los Villares Amor. The work was never completed, but between 1875 and 1892 250 plates of Cambrian to Paleogene fossils were published, most of them (206) drawn by Teresa Madasú, who therefore stands as the pioneer of paleontological illustration in Spain.

Nowadays, social networks play a central role in communication media. In this scenario, analysing the gender awareness fostered by the influencers is crucial. The research explores the female representation portrayed by eight Spanish influencers who address the gender approach from graphic communication. All of them are women illustrators, cover topics related to gender, and use similar communication strategies. The methodology includes three complementary techniques: first, desktop study to compare the illustrators’ profiles; second, content analysis to delve into the topics addressed and their artivism; third, a Delphi method to assess their contribution to promoting gender egalitarian values, in which experts specialising in communication, philosophy, sociology, psychology, and politics participate. The results show that feminism is a prominent topic in their publications, stimulating a feeling of sisterhood among women, their core target. From a generational perspective, the influence of their message is more significant on millennials and centennials. Conclusions confirm that social media characteristics, artivism, content hybridisation and transmediality enhance their feministic discourse. Future lines of research may focus on identifying other channels and communication strategies more influential for broad target groups, especially men and generations older than millennials, since these external audiences seem crucial to spread gender awareness.

AbstractIn 1841 John Murray published a sumptuously ornamented edition of John Gibson Lockhart’sAncient Spanish Ballads.Murray’s new edition, printed using the very latest bookmaking technologies and pitched at a readership newly accustomed to paying exorbitant prices for book ornaments and illustrations, was radically different from the first edition of Lockhart’s ballads, which had appeared without accompanying ornament in 1823. Illustrated by the leading illustrators of the day and decorated throughout in multiple colors by the architect Owen Jones (who would go on to become famous as a Superintendent of the Great Exhibition and the author ofThe Grammar of Ornament), Murray’s edition represents a stunning departure in Victorian printing and a highpoint in mid-Victorian design generally. At the same time, it crystallizes a debate about the nature and application of artistic design that was beginning to emerge in the early years of Victoria’s reign and that would erupt with maximum vigor ten years later in the confrontation between John Ruskin and the South Kensington School. The tension between flat, stylized design and what Ruskin was later to term “truth to nature” is already palpable in the conflict between illustrations and ornaments to Murray’s book. However, it was the involvement of Owen Jones that especially distinguished the volume, as it gave Jones the opportunity to demonstrate in a practical way ideas about design, color, and style that he would theorize fifteen years later inThe Grammar of Ornament. Those ideas are especially resonant today, given recent work on the history of the book and the “bibliographic codes” of literature, since the effect of Jones’s work is to expose the textual condition of Lockhart’s poetry itself and to harness the eye as an active constituent in the act of reading. Fifty years before the work of William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, Jones and Murray showed Victorian readers that a printed book might be a thing of real beauty and that poetry, no less than painting or architecture, is dependent on the perceptual structure of its textual vehicle.

This article is dedicated to the Catalan caricature of the mid-19th century. The thematic field is being investigated to which artists have been addressing for 20 years. After all, political, social and cultural shifts within Spanish society are reflected in the cartoons of the Barcelona press, for example, El Pájaro verde, El Pájaro azul, El Diablo suelto, La Flaca, La Madeja, La Campana de Gràcia, La Esquella de la Torratxa. The work identifies three periods: 1) from the 1860s to 1868, 2) The six democratic or revolutionary years, 3) the first years after the Restoration. 1860-1868 is the period when caricature was born and developed in Catalonia. It was in the 1860s that such great illustrators as Tomas Padro and José Luis Paleser emerged. In the Catalan satirical press, the period of The six democratic years was a time of creative upsurge and development of the genre of caricature, when artists could openly denounce the authorities and honestly talk about problems.

The United States is home to the second largest population of Spanish speakers in the world. This demographic presence translates into high levels of capacity, opportunity, and desire for U.S. Spanish. However, as this paper illustrates, the long-term sustainability of Spanish in the United States remains uncertain due to a number of factors, notably (a) declining immigration rates from the Spanish-speaking world, (b) low rates of intergenerational transmission among U.S. Latinos, and (c) negative attitudes surrounding Spanish and U.S. Latinos. The discussion points to linguistic resilience as a particularly important tool for combating the latter two factors.

Abstract One of our central challenges as medievalists consists of how to respond to the question regarding the relevance of medieval literature and other documents. This article suggests that we can easily draw from medieval heroic literature where ideal and also negative examples of successful/failed leadership are provided. The MHG Nibelungenlied, at least in the first part, illustrates dramatically the consequences of a weak, indecisive, impulsive, and manipulable ruler, whose actions ultimately trigger a whole sequence of hatred, violence, and slaughter. The Old Spanish El Poema de Mío Cid sets out almost at the same point, with the protagonist being exiled because of malignment, but in the course of events, he demonstrates convincingly what makes a true, honorable, admirable, and worthy leader. These two epic poems can serve powerfully as illustrations of failed and successful leadership, and can thus offer significant instructions for modern concerns in politics, business, administration, the church, schools, and universities.

This chapter explores the Spanish translations of the English ingressive verbs ‘begin’ and ‘start’ in the parallel corpus PACTRES. ‘Begin’ and ‘start’ are considered near-synonyms and the aim of this paper is to trace any semantic differences between them through an analysis of their Spanish translations. I obtained the translational options in Spanish for ‘begin’ and ‘start’ and compared the divergences using statistical significance tests. The findings revealed that the verb ‘start’ presents a wider range of ingressive verbs as translational options in Spanish, thus pointing towards a larger number of associated sense relations than the verb ‘begin’. This study illustrates the usefulness of parallel corpora in highlighting semantic differences between near-synonyms in the source language, here English.

Also, by drawing on a theoretical framework interconnecting imagology and journalistic translation, I conduct a pilot study to demonstrate the exploitation of the NYTMPC for studying national image construction in news translation. The results indicate that stereotyped images of China in English news are reconstructed differently in their Chinese and Spanish translations, and the translational factors that underlie this process are uncovered more clearly with the aid of multilingual parallel corpora.

AbstractThe destreza was a characteristic fencing system present in Hispanic countries during the Golden centuries. Contemporarily, there were other fencing systems of possible European origin known as common or vulgar fencing. Even with striking differences, both systems share some technical terms and concepts. We present the Ferrara manuscript, a recently discovered item which, although written from the perspective of verdadera destreza, also covers many features of both systems. This book was written on behalf of an Austrian nobleman present at the Spanish court, probably Johan Ferdinand von Kueburg. It includes some basic destreza techniques as well as a description of a number of vulgar techniques and their counters. It also contains a nice set of illustrations, which is uncommon for destreza manuals.

ZusammenfassungEighteenth-century Spanish encyclopaedias, translated from other European languages into Castilian, provide excellent illustrations of the central connections between ency-clopaedism and translation at the time. They show the importance of translations for the dissemination of the genre, the transcultural and transgeneric interweaving of knowledge through multiple translation practices, processes of autonomization in the form of departure from the source text, and forms of „nationalization“ resulting from the adaptation of translated encyclopaedias to the cultural background of their readers. At the same time, the analysis reveals that these texts were by no means only important in terms of the wealth of knowledge they provided, nor were they simply pragmatic instruments of reform-oriented Enlightenment. Rather, they proved to be a medium for self-confident participation in the knowledge production of the time and thus also for inner and outward self-assertion.

This chapter provides a window into Puerto Rican children’s literature that has served as means to resist colonial discourses and invisibility throughout the years. The creation of textbooks in Spanish by Puerto Rican educators and politicians challenged a strong narrative of assimilation that emerged as a result of the 1898 US military invasion (Kerkhof 261); additionally, picture books likeLa gran Victoria by Verónica De la Cruz, inspired by the manifestations of Summer 2019 that led to the impeachment of governor Ricky Roselló, resist US hegemony. The chapter highlights stories produced on the archipelago, as well as initiatives that encourage production, access, documentation, research, and integration of Puerto Rican literature across contexts. Further consideration is given to authors, illustrators, scholars, publishers, and readers from the diaspora who continue to expand what it means to be Puerto Rican from their complex, experiential, and critical approaches.

Pipelines are the most convenient and safe medium of oil and gas transportation from offshore fields. Such pipelines will often have free spans when passing through areas with uneven sea floor. These free spans may experience vibrations due to vortex shedding when subjected to ocean current, which may lead to unacceptable accumulation of fatigue damage. The bottom topography may result in multi-span pipelines with short contact area between adjacent spans. Such neighbor spans may interact dynamically, meaning that the response of one span can not be found unless its neighbors are taken into account. The purpose of the present paper is to illustrate possible consequences of interaction and present a consistent method for classification of interaction. Two aspects of interaction are studied, namely the possible energy transfer due to hydrodynamic forces from one span to its neighbor of different length, and how the stiffness properties and length of the contact area between spans influence the interaction. The first aspect is studied by using an empirical model for the analysis of vortex induced vibrations (VIV) of multi-span pipelines. This model applies a frequency domain solution procedure that must describe the interaction between the pipe and the seafloor by linear theory. It was observed from the results that the spans interact dynamically, and the distribution of lift forces along the length of pipe shows that energy is transferred from the span with smallest amplitude to the span with largest amplitude. The second aspect is studied by use of an analysis model where the contact between pipe and seafloor has a more realistic representation. This model is based on a non-linear finite element method, and the dynamic analysis is carried out in time domain. By using this model it is possible to characterize the mechanical coupling between the spans. A systematic study illustrates how seafloor stiffness and local profile of the seafloor will influence the interaction.

Highly resolved heat transfer coefficient distributions on the target plate are obtained utilizing transient liquid crystal over a range of Reynolds numbers varying between 5,000 and 25,000. Effect of streamwise and spanwise jet-to-jet spacing (X/D, Y/D: 4–8) and jet-to-target plate distance (Z/D: 0.75–3) are employed composing a test matrix of 36 different geometries. Additionally, the effect of hole inclination (θ: 0°–40°) on the heat transfer coefficient is investigated. Optical hole spacing arrangements and impingement distance are pointed out to maximize the area-averaged Nusselt number and minimize the amount of cooling air. Also included is a new correlation, based on that of Florschuetz et al., to predict row-averaged Nusselt number. The new correlation is capable to cover low Z/D∼0.75 and presents better prediction of row-averaged Nusselt number, which proves to be an effective impingement design tool.

In order to predict the phenomenon of laminar flow separation, transition and reattachment in a high-lift low-pressure turbine (LPT), a self-developed large eddy simulation program to solve three dimensional compressible N-S equations was used to simulate the flow structures in T106A LPT blade passage. The outlet Mach number is 0.4 and the Reynolds number is 1.1×105 based on the exit isentropic velocity and the axial chord. The distributions of the time-averaged static pressure coefficient, kinetic loss coefficient and wall shear stress on the blade surface at +7.8° incidence angle agree well with the results of experiment and direct numerical simulation (DNS). The locations of laminar separation and reattachment point occur around 83.6% and 97% axial chord respectively. The evolutionary process of spanwise vorticity and large-scale coherent structure near the trailing edge on the suction side in one period indicates that the two-dimensional shear layer is gradually unstable as a result of spanwise fluctuation and Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability. The boundary layer separates from the suction surface and the hairpin vortex appears in succession, which leads to transition to turbulence. Analysis of the incidence angle effect on the boundary layer separation point as well as separation bubble scale was also performed. A small scale separation bubble exists around the leading edge at positive incidences. As the incidence angle changes from positive to negative, the separation bubble near the leading edge disappears and the boundary layer thickness reduces gradually. The separation point at the rear part of suction side moves downstream, yet the reattachment point barely changes. The Reynolds stress and turbulent kinetic energy profiles change dramatically at zero and positive incidence. This illustrates that the incidence angle has great influence on the development of the boundary layer and the flow field structures.

Highly resolved temperature distributions on the target plate are obtained utilizing steady liquid crystal over a range of Reynolds numbers varying between 5,000 and 27,5000. Effect of streamwise and spanwise jet-to-jet spacing (X/D, Y/D: 4–8), jet-to-target plate distance (Z/D: 0.75–3) and target plate thickness (t/D: 0.75–2.75) are employed composing a test matrix of 108 different geometries. Measured data are utilized as boundary conditions to conduct finite element simulation. Local and averaged non-dimensional temperature and averaged temperature uniformity of target plate “hot side” are obtained. Optimum hole spacing arrangements, impingement distance and target plate thickness are pointed out to minimize hot side temperature, the amount of cooling air and maximize the temperature uniformity. Also included are 2D predictions with different convective boundary conditions, i.e. row-averaged and local heat transfer coefficients, to estimate the accuracy of temperature prediction in comparison with the conjugate results.

Endwall heat transfer measurements for a radially rotating rectangular pin-fin channel with the width-to-height ratio (aspect ratio) of 8 are performed at the parametric conditions of 5000≤Re≤20000, 0≤Ro≤1.4 and 0.1≤Δρ/ρ≤0.21. Centerline heat transfer levels along the leading and trailing endwalls of the rotating pin-fin channel are respectively raised to 1.77–3.72 and 3.06–5.2 times of the Dittus-Boelter values. No previous attempt has examined the heat transfer performances for the pin-fin channel at such high rotation numbers. A selection of experimental data illustrates the individual and interactive Re, Ro and buoyancy number (Bu) effects on heat transfer. Spanwise heat transfer variations between two adjoining pin rows are detected with the averaged Nusselt numbers (Nu) determined. A set of empirical equations that calculates Nu values over leading and trailing endwalls in the developed flow region is derived to correlate all the heat transfer data generated by this study and permits the evaluation of interactive and individual effects of Re, Ro and Bu on Nu. With the aid of the Nu correlations derived, the operating conditions with the worst heat transfer scenarios for this rotating pin-fin channel are identified.

Taking advantage of computationally lightweight, but high-quality translators prompt consideration of new applications that address neglected languages. For projects with protected or personal data, translators for less popular or low-resource languages require specific compliance checks before posting to a public translation API. In these cases, locally run translators can render reasonable, cost-effective solutions if done with an army of offline, smallscale pair translators. Like handling a specialist’s dialect, this research illustrates translating two historically interesting, but obfuscated languages: 1) hacker-speak (“l33t”) and 2) reverse (or “mirror”) writing as practiced by Leonardo da Vinci. The work generalizes a deep learning architecture to translatable variants of hacker-speak with lite, medium, and hard vocabularies. The original contribution highlights a fluent translator of hacker-speak in under 50 megabytes and demonstrates a companion text generator for augmenting future datasets with greater than a million bilingual sentence pairs. A primary motivation stems from the need to understand and archive the evolution of the international computer community, one that continuously enhances their talent for speaking openly but in hidden contexts. This training of bilingual sentences supports deep learning models using a long short-term memory, recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN). It extends previous work demonstrating an English-to-foreign translation service built from as little as 10,000 bilingual sentence pairs. This work further solves the equivalent translation problem in twenty-six additional (non-obfuscated) languages and rank orders those models and their proficiency quantitatively with Italian as the most successful and Mandarin Chinese as the most challenging. For neglected languages, the method prototypes novel services for smaller niche translations such as Kabyle (Algerian dialect) which covers between 5-7 million speakers but one which for most enterprise translators, has not yet reached development. One anticipates the extension of this approach to other important dialects, such as translating technical (medical or legal) jargon and processing health records or handling many of the dialects collected from specialized domains (mixed languages like “Spanglish”, acronym-laden Twitter feeds, or urban slang).

<p>The recently completed $559M reconstruction of the Dolphin Expressway‐Palmetto Expressway Interchange in Miami, FL (USA) represents an excellent example of severe urban site constraints due to the amount of traffic, the proximity to a busy international airport and the surrounding urban landscape. This paper illustrates the solutions adopted by the design‐build team to deal with the challenges of this urban site. Further, it explains how they were integrated in various phases of the project which was completed over a five‐year span, and completed in 2016.</p><p>The main focus of this paper is the four precast segmental flyovers with a total length of 2.4 km, designed by FINLEY and erected over the existing traffic (400,000 vehicles that traveled this route daily) with the use of a launching gantry. Several key modifications were proposed to the Owner’s original concept of the bridges and as part of the framework of the design‐build procurement. The design choices were driven by the selected erection method, the intent to relieve the congested area of the intersection by using fewer piers and simpler construction details. Most notably, this includes the introduction of a superstructure haunch to achieve longer spans, design of post‐tensioning details suited for easy construction and special design of pier heads with provisions for balanced cantilever stability that eliminated the need of temporary falsework towers in the tight space of the intersection’s heart.</p><p>The project highlights the positive aspects of a design‐build method, the importance of teamwork among design‐build team members and how the proposed modifications added value on this complex project.</p>

An important problem that spans across many types of systems (e.g. mechanical and biological) is how to model the dynamics of joints or interfaces in built-up structures in such a way that the complex dynamic and energy dissipative behavior that depends on micro-scale phenomena at the joint/interface is accurately captured, yet in a framework that is amenable to efficient computational analyses of the larger macro-scale system of which the joint or interface is a (spatially) small part. Simulating joint behavior in finite element analysis by meshing the joint regions finely enough to capture relevant micromechanics is impractical for large-scale structural systems due to the prohibitively small time steps required and/or resulting matrix ill-conditioning. A more practical approach is to devise constitutive models for the overall behavior of individual joints that accurately capture their nonlinear and energy-dissipative behavior and to incorporate the constitutive response locally into the otherwise often-linear structural model. Recent studies have successfully captured and simulated mechanical joint dynamics using computationally simple phenomenological models of combined elasticity and slip with associated friction and energy dissipation, known as Iwan models. In the present article, the author reviews the relationship, and in some cases exact equivalence, of one type of Iwan model to several other models of hysteretic behavior that have been used to simulate a wide range of physical phenomena. Specifically, it is shown that the “parallel-series” Iwan model has been referred to in other fields by different names, including “Maxwell Resistive-Capacitor” and “Ishlinskii”. Given this, the author establishes the relationship of this Iwan model to several other hysteresis models, most significantly the classical Preisach model. Having established these relationships, it is then possible to extend analytical tools developed for a specific hysteresis model to all of the models with which it is related. Such analytical tools include experimental identification, inversion and analysis of vibratory energy flow and dissipation. A numerical case study of a simple system that includes an Iwan-modeled joint illustrates these points.
